Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.67.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्थं देवैः स्तुता देवी दुर्गा दुर्गार्तिनाशिनी । आविर्बभूव देवानां पुरतो जगदम्बिका

brahmovāca itthaṁ devaiḥ stutā devī durgā durgārtināśinī āvirbabhūva devānāṁ purato jagadambikā

Brahma said: "Thus praised by the gods, the goddess Durga, remover of dire afflictions, the Mother of the universe, appeared before the gods.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.67.2)

रथे रत्नमये दिव्ये संस्थिता परमाद्भुते । किङ्किणीजालसंयुक्ते मृदुसंस्तरणे वरे

rathe ratnamaye divye saṁsthitā paramādbhute kiṅkiṇījālasaṁyukte mṛdusaṁstaraṇe vare

"Seated in a divine chariot made of jewels, most wondrous, hung with a network of little bells, spread with soft and excellent coverings.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.67.3)

कोटिसूर्याधिकाभासरम्यावयवभासिनी । स्वतेजोराशिमध्यस्था वररूपासमच्छविः

koṭisūryādhikābhāsaramyāvayavabhāsinī svatejorāśimadhyasthā vararūpāsamacchaviḥ

"Her limbs shining with a splendor exceeding ten million suns, standing in the midst of her own mass of radiance, of surpassing form, of matchless lustre.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.67.4)

अनूपमा महामाया सदाशिवविलासिनी । त्रिगुणा निर्गुणा नित्या शिवलोकनिवासिनी

anūpamā mahāmāyā sadāśivavilāsinī triguṇā nirguṇā nityā śivalokanivāsinī

"Incomparable, the great Maya, the consort delighting Sadashiva; possessed of the three gunas yet beyond gunas, eternal, dweller in Shiva's realm.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.67.5)

त्रिदेवजननी चण्डी शिवा सर्वार्तिनाशिनी । सर्वमाता महानिद्रा सर्वस्वजनतारिणी

tridevajananī caṇḍī śivā sarvārtināśinī sarvamātā mahānidrā sarvasvajanatāriṇī

"Mother of the three gods, Chandi, the auspicious one, remover of all afflictions; Mother of all, the great Sleep, the deliverer of all her own people.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.67.6)

तेजोराशेः प्रभावात्तु सा तु दृष्टा सुरैश्शिवा । तुष्टुवुस्तां पुनस्ते वै सुरा दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः

tejorāśeḥ prabhāvāttu sā tu dṛṣṭā suraiśśivā tuṣṭuvustāṁ punaste vai surā darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ

"By the power of that mass of splendor, the auspicious one was seen by the gods; those gods, longing for her sight, again praised her.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.67.7)

अथ देवगणाः सर्वे विष्ण्वाद्या दर्शनेप्सवः । ददृशुर्जगदम्बां तां तत्कृपां प्राप्य तत्र हि

atha devagaṇāḥ sarve viṣṇvādyā darśanepsavaḥ dadṛśurjagadambāṁ tāṁ tatkṛpāṁ prāpya tatra hi

"Then all the host of gods, beginning with Vishnu, longing for her sight, beheld the Mother of the universe there, having obtained her grace.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.67.8)

बभूवानन्दसन्दोहः सर्वेषां त्रिदिवौकसाम् । पुनः पुनः प्रणेमुस्तां तुष्टुवुश्च विशेषतः

babhūvānandasandohaḥ sarveṣāṁ tridivaukasām punaḥ punaḥ praṇemustāṁ tuṣṭuvuśca viśeṣataḥ

"A flood of bliss arose in all the dwellers of heaven; again and again they bowed to her, and praised her with special devotion.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.67.9)

देवा ऊचुः । शिवे शर्वाणि कल्याणि जगदम्ब महेश्वरि । त्वां नताः सर्वथा देवा वयं सर्वार्तिनाशिनीम्

devā ūcuḥ śive śarvāṇi kalyāṇi jagadamba maheśvari tvāṁ natāḥ sarvathā devā vayaṁ sarvārtināśinīm

The gods said: "O Shiva, O Sharvani, O auspicious one, Mother of the universe, Maheshvari — we gods bow to you in every way, remover of all afflictions.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.67.10)

न हि जानन्ति देवेशि वेदाः शास्त्राणि कृत्स्नशः । अतीतो महिमा ध्यानं तव वाङ्मनसोः शिवे

na hi jānanti deveśi vedāḥ śāstrāṇi kṛtsnaśaḥ atīto mahimā dhyānaṁ tava vāṅmanasoḥ śive

"O Queen of the gods, neither the Vedas nor all the scriptures altogether know you; your greatness, O auspicious one, transcends speech and mind, even meditation upon you.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.67.11)

अतद्व्यावृत्तितस्त्वां वै चकितं चकितं सदा । अभिधत्ते श्रुतिरपि परेषां का कथा मता

atadvyāvṛttitastvāṁ vai cakitaṁ cakitaṁ sadā abhidhatte śrutirapi pareṣāṁ kā kathā matā

"Only by excluding what you are not does even the Veda, ever startled, timidly speak of you — what then to say of others?

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.67.12)

जानन्ति बहवो भक्तास्त्वत्कृपां प्राप्य भक्तितः । शरणागतभक्तानां न कुत्रापि भयादिकम्

jānanti bahavo bhaktāstvatkṛpāṁ prāpya bhaktitaḥ śaraṇāgatabhaktānāṁ na kutrāpi bhayādikam

"Many devotees know you, having obtained your grace through devotion; for devotees who have taken refuge in you, there is no fear anywhere.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.67.13)

विज्ञप्तिं शृणु सुप्रीता यस्या दासाः सदाम्बिके । तव देवि महादेवि हीनतो वर्णयामहे

vijñaptiṁ śṛṇu suprītā yasyā dāsāḥ sadāmbike tava devi mahādevi hīnato varṇayāmahe

"Hear our petition, gladly, O Mother, whose servants we ever are; O goddess, great goddess, we, though unworthy, shall speak it.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.67.14)

पुरा दक्षसुता भूत्वा सञ्जाता हरवल्लभा । ब्रह्मणश्च परेषां वानाशयत्त्वमकं महत्

purā dakṣasutā bhūtvā sañjātā haravallabhā brahmaṇaśca pareṣāṁ vānāśayattvamakaṁ mahat

"Formerly, having become Daksha's daughter, you were born as Hara's beloved; you dispelled great sorrow, both of Brahma's and of others'.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.67.15)

पितृतोऽनादरं प्राप्यात्यजः पणवशात्तनुम् । स्वलोकमगमस्त्वं वालभद्दुखं हरोऽपि हि

pitṛto'nādaraṁ prāpyātyajaḥ paṇavaśāttanum svalokamagamastvaṁ vālabhaddukhaṁ haro'pi hi

"Having received dishonor from your father, in keeping with your own vow, you gave up your body and went to your own realm; and Hara too was afflicted with grief, like a helpless child.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.67.16)

न हि जातं प्रपूर्णं तद्देवकार्यं महेश्वरि । व्याकुला मुनयो देवाः शरणं त्वां गता वयम्

na hi jātaṁ prapūrṇaṁ taddevakāryaṁ maheśvari vyākulā munayo devāḥ śaraṇaṁ tvāṁ gatā vayam

"That work of the gods, O Maheshvari, has not been fully accomplished; the sages and gods are distressed; we have come to you for refuge.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.67.17)

पूर्णं कुरु महेशानि निर्जराणां मनोरथम् । सनत्कुमारवचनं सफलं स्याद्यथा शिवे

pūrṇaṁ kuru maheśāni nirjarāṇāṁ manoratham sanatkumāravacanaṁ saphalaṁ syādyathā śive

"O Maheshani, fulfil the desire of the immortals, so that Sanatkumara's word may become true, O auspicious one.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.67.18)

अवतीर्य क्षितौ देवि रुद्रपत्नी पुनर्भव । लीलां कुरु यथायोग्यं प्राप्नुयुर्निर्जराः सुखम्

avatīrya kṣitau devi rudrapatnī punarbhava līlāṁ kuru yathāyogyaṁ prāpnuyurnirjarāḥ sukham

"Descend upon the earth, O goddess, and become Rudra's wife once more; enact your play as is fitting, so that the immortals may attain happiness.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.67.19)

सुखी स्याद्देवि रुद्रोऽपि कैलासाचलसंस्थितः । सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनो दुःखं नश्यतु कृत्स्नशः

sukhī syāddevi rudro'pi kailāsācalasaṁsthitaḥ sarve bhavantu sukhino duḥkhaṁ naśyatu kṛtsnaśaḥ

"May Rudra too, O goddess, dwelling on Mount Kailasa, become happy; may all become happy, and may sorrow be utterly destroyed."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.67.20)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति प्रोच्यामराः सर्वे विष्ण्वाद्याः प्रेमसङ्कुलाः । मौनमास्थाय सन्तस्थुर्भक्तिनम्रात्ममूर्तयः

brahmovāca iti procyāmarāḥ sarve viṣṇvādyāḥ premasaṅkulāḥ maunamāsthāya santasthurbhaktinamrātmamūrtayaḥ

Brahma said: "Having spoken thus, all the immortals beginning with Vishnu, filled with love, fell silent and stood there, their forms bowed in devotion.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.67.21)

शिवापि सुप्रसन्नाभूदाकर्ण्यामरसंस्तुतिम् । आकलय्याथ तद्धेतुं संस्मृत्य स्वप्रभुं शिवम्

śivāpi suprasannābhūdākarṇyāmarasaṁstutim ākalayyātha taddhetuṁ saṁsmṛtya svaprabhuṁ śivam

"The auspicious Goddess too became greatly gracious, having heard the immortals' hymn; understanding its purpose, and calling to mind her own Lord Shiva —

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.67.22)

उवाचोमा तदा देवी सम्बोध्य विबुधांश्च तान् । विहस्य मापतिमुखान् सदया भक्तवत्सला

uvācomā tadā devī sambodhya vibudhāṁśca tān vihasya māpatimukhān sadayā bhaktavatsalā

"then the goddess Uma, addressing those wise ones, smiling, compassionate, and affectionate to her devotees, spoke."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.67.23)

उमोवाच हे हरे हे विधे देवा मुनयश्च गतव्यथाः । सर्वे शृणुत मद्वाक्यं प्रसन्नाहं न संशयः

umovāca he hare he vidhe devā munayaśca gatavyathāḥ sarve śṛṇuta madvākyaṁ prasannāhaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

Uma said: "O Hari, O Brahma, O gods and sages, be free of distress; hear all of you my word — I am indeed pleased, without doubt.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.67.24)

चरितं मम सर्वत्र त्रैलोक्यस्य सुखावहम् । कृतं मयैवं सकलं दक्षमोहादिकं च तत्

caritaṁ mama sarvatra trailokyasya sukhāvaham kṛtaṁ mayaivaṁ sakalaṁ dakṣamohādikaṁ ca tat

"My conduct everywhere brings happiness to the three worlds; all of this — the delusion of Daksha and the rest — was done by me alone.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.67.25)

अवतारं करिष्यामि क्षितौ पूर्णं न संशयः । बहवो हेतवोऽप्यत्र तद्वदामि महादरात्

avatāraṁ kariṣyāmi kṣitau pūrṇaṁ na saṁśayaḥ bahavo hetavo'pyatra tadvadāmi mahādarāt

"I shall take a full incarnation upon the earth, without doubt; there are many reasons for this too, which I shall tell with great reverence.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.67.26)

पुरा हिमाचलो देवा मेना चातिसुभक्तितः । सेवां मे चक्रतुस्तातजननीवत्सतीतनोः

purā himācalo devā menā cātisubhaktitaḥ sevāṁ me cakratustātajananīvatsatītanoḥ

"O gods, formerly Himachal and Mena served me with the greatest devotion, as if they were the father and mother of Sati's own body.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.67.27)

इदानीं कुरुतः सेवां सुभक्त्या मम नित्यशः । मेना विशेषतस्तत्र सुतात्वे नात्र संशयः

idānīṁ kurutaḥ sevāṁ subhaktyā mama nityaśaḥ menā viśeṣatastatra sutātve nātra saṁśayaḥ

"Even now they continually serve me with deep devotion; Mena especially, in this regard, longs for me as her daughter — there is no doubt of this.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.67.28)

रुद्रो गच्छतु यूयं चावतारं हिमवद्गृहे । अतश्चावतरिष्यामि दुःखनाशो भविष्यति

rudro gacchatu yūyaṁ cāvatāraṁ himavadgṛhe ataścāvatariṣyāmi duḥkhanāśo bhaviṣyati

"Let Rudra too take his part, and go you all there — I shall take incarnation in the house of Himavat; sorrow shall thereby be destroyed.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.67.29)

सर्वे गच्छत धाम स्वं स्वं सुखं लभतां चिरम् । अवतीर्य सुता भूत्वा मेनाया दास्य उत्सुखम्

sarve gacchata dhāma svaṁ svaṁ sukhaṁ labhatāṁ ciram avatīrya sutā bhūtvā menāyā dāsya utsukham

"Go, all of you, each to your own abode, and may you obtain lasting happiness; descending and becoming a daughter, I shall give Mena great joy.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.67.30)

हरपत्नी भविष्यामि सुगुप्तं मतमात्मनः । अद्भुता शिवलीला हि ज्ञानिनामपि मोहिनी

harapatnī bhaviṣyāmi suguptaṁ matamātmanaḥ adbhutā śivalīlā hi jñānināmapi mohinī

"I shall become Hara's wife — this is my own well-guarded resolve; wondrous indeed is Shiva's play, deluding even the wise.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.67.31)

यावत्प्रभृति मे त्यक्ता स्वतनुर्दक्षजा सुराः । पितृतोऽनादरं दृष्ट्वा स्वामिनस्तत्क्रतौ गता

yāvatprabhṛti me tyaktā svatanurdakṣajā surāḥ pitṛto'nādaraṁ dṛṣṭvā svāminastatkratau gatā

"From the very moment, O gods, that I, as Daksha's daughter, gave up my own body — seeing dishonor from my father, and having gone to that sacrifice —

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.67.32)

तदाप्रभृति स स्वामी रुद्रः कालाग्निसंज्ञकः । दिगम्बरो बभूवाशु मच्चिन्तनपरायणः

tadāprabhṛti sa svāmī rudraḥ kālāgnisaṁjñakaḥ digambaro babhūvāśu maccintanaparāyaṇaḥ

"from that time onward, that Lord Rudra, known as Kalagni, swiftly became sky-clad, wholly devoted to thinking upon me.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.67.33)

मम रोषं क्रतौ दृष्ट्वा पितुस्तत्र गता सती । अत्यजत्स्वतनुं प्रीत्या धर्मज्ञेति विचारतः

mama roṣaṁ kratau dṛṣṭvā pitustatra gatā satī atyajatsvatanuṁ prītyā dharmajñeti vicārataḥ

"Sati, seeing my wrath at that sacrifice of my father, having gone there, gave up her own body out of love, reflecting: 'I know dharma.'

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.67.34)

योग्यभूत्सदनं त्यक्त्वा कृत्वा वेषमलौकिकम् । न सेहे विरहं सत्या मद्रूपाया महेश्वरः

yogyabhūtsadanaṁ tyaktvā kṛtvā veṣamalaukikam na sehe virahaṁ satyā madrūpāyā maheśvaraḥ

"Leaving his fitting abode and taking on an unworldly guise, the great Lord could not bear separation from Sati, my very form.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.67.35)

मम हेतोर्महादुःखी स बभूव कुवेषभृत् । अत्यजत्स तदारभ्य कामजं सुखमुत्तमम्

mama hetormahāduḥkhī sa babhūva kuveṣabhṛt atyajatsa tadārabhya kāmajaṁ sukhamuttamam

"For my sake he became greatly sorrowful, wearing a wretched guise; from then on he gave up the supreme pleasures born of desire.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.67.36)

अन्यच्छृणुत हे विष्णो हे विधे मुनयः सुराः । महाप्रभोर्महेशस्य लीलां भुवनपालिनीम्

anyacchṛṇuta he viṣṇo he vidhe munayaḥ surāḥ mahāprabhormaheśasya līlāṁ bhuvanapālinīm

"Hear something more, O Vishnu, O Brahma, sages and gods, of the great Lord Mahesha's play, which protects the worlds.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.67.37)

विधाय मालां सुप्रीत्या ममास्थ्नां विरहाकुलः । न शान्तिं प्राप कुत्रापि प्रबुद्धोऽप्येक एव सः

vidhāya mālāṁ suprītyā mamāsthnāṁ virahākulaḥ na śāntiṁ prāpa kutrāpi prabuddho'pyeka eva saḥ

"Having lovingly fashioned a garland of my bones, distressed by separation, he found peace nowhere, though awakened, all alone.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.67.38)

इतस्ततो रुरोदोच्चैरनीश इव स प्रभुः । योग्यायोग्यं न बुबुधे भ्रमन्सर्वत्र सर्वदा

itastato rurodoccairanīśa iva sa prabhuḥ yogyāyogyaṁ na bubudhe bhramansarvatra sarvadā

"That Lord wept loudly here and there, as though without a master; wandering everywhere, always, he did not distinguish what was fitting from what was not.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.67.39)

इत्थं लीलां हरोऽकार्षीद्दर्शयन्कामिनां प्रभुः । ऊचे कामुकवद्वाणीं विरहव्याकुलामिव

itthaṁ līlāṁ haro'kārṣīddarśayankāmināṁ prabhuḥ ūce kāmukavadvāṇīṁ virahavyākulāmiva

"Thus Hara enacted this play, the Lord displaying the way of lovers, speaking words like a passionate one distressed by separation.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.67.40)

वस्तुतोऽविकृतोऽदीनोऽस्त्यजितः परमेश्वरः । परिपूर्णः शिवः स्वामी मायाधीशोऽखिलेश्वरः

vastuto'vikṛto'dīno'styajitaḥ parameśvaraḥ paripūrṇaḥ śivaḥ svāmī māyādhīśo'khileśvaraḥ

"In truth, unchanging, never wretched, unconquered is the Supreme Lord; ever complete, Shiva the Master, ruler of Maya, Lord of all.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.67.41)

अन्यथा मोहतस्तस्य किं कामाच्च प्रयोजनम् । विकारेणापि केनाशु मायालिप्तो न स प्रभुः

anyathā mohatastasya kiṁ kāmācca prayojanam vikāreṇāpi kenāśu māyālipto na sa prabhuḥ

"Otherwise, what use has he for delusion or desire? By no manner of change is that Lord ever touched by Maya.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.67.42)

रुद्रोऽतीवेच्छति विभुः स मे कर्तुं करग्रहम् । अवतारं क्षितौ मेनाहिमाचलगृहे सुराः

rudro'tīvecchati vibhuḥ sa me kartuṁ karagraham avatāraṁ kṣitau menāhimācalagṛhe surāḥ

"Rudra, the all-pervading Lord, greatly desires to take my hand in marriage; O gods, for that I shall take incarnation on earth, in the house of Mena and Himachal.

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.67.43)

अतश्चावतरिष्यामि रुद्रसन्तोषहेतवे । हिमागपत्न्यां मेनायां लौकिकीं गतिमाश्रिता

ataścāvatariṣyāmi rudrasantoṣahetave himāgapatnyāṁ menāyāṁ laukikīṁ gatimāśritā

"Therefore I shall descend, for the sake of Rudra's contentment, taking a worldly form in Mena, the wife of the mountain.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.67.44)

भक्ता रुद्रप्रिया भूत्वा तपः कृत्वा सुदुस्सहम् । देवकार्यं करिष्यामि सत्यं सत्यं न संशयः

bhaktā rudrapriyā bhūtvā tapaḥ kṛtvā sudussaham devakāryaṁ kariṣyāmi satyaṁ satyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

"Becoming a devotee and Rudra's beloved, performing the most unbearable austerity, I shall accomplish the work of the gods — truly, truly, without doubt.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.67.45)

गच्छत स्वगृहं सर्वे भवं भजत नित्यशः । तत्कृपातोऽखिलं दुःखं विनश्यति न संशयः

gacchata svagṛhaṁ sarve bhavaṁ bhajata nityaśaḥ tatkṛpāto'khilaṁ duḥkhaṁ vinaśyati na saṁśayaḥ

"Go, all of you, to your own homes, and ever worship Bhava; by his grace all sorrow is destroyed, without doubt.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.67.46)

भविष्यति कृपालोस्तु कृपया मङ्गलं सदा । वन्द्या पूज्या त्रिलोकेऽहं तज्जायेति च हेतुतः

bhaviṣyati kṛpālostu kṛpayā maṅgalaṁ sadā vandyā pūjyā triloke'haṁ tajjāyeti ca hetutaḥ

"By the grace of the merciful one, auspiciousness shall ever come to be; I shall be revered and worshipped in the three worlds, precisely because I am his wife."

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.67.47)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा जगदम्बा सा देवानां पश्यतां तदा । अन्तर्दधे शिवा तात स्वं लोकं प्राप वै द्रुतम्

brahmovāca ityuktvā jagadambā sā devānāṁ paśyatāṁ tadā antardadhe śivā tāta svaṁ lokaṁ prāpa vai drutam

Brahma said: "Having said this, the Mother of the universe, the auspicious one, dear one, vanished there before the very eyes of the gods, and swiftly attained her own realm.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.67.48)

विष्ण्वादयः सुराः सर्वे मुनयश्च मुदान्विताः । कृत्वा तद्दिशि सन्नामं स्वस्वधामानि संययुः

viṣṇvādayaḥ surāḥ sarve munayaśca mudānvitāḥ kṛtvā taddiśi sannāmaṁ svasvadhāmāni saṁyayuḥ

"All the gods beginning with Vishnu, and the sages, filled with joy, having bowed in that direction, departed each to his own abode.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.67.49)

इत्थं दुर्गासुचरितं वर्णितं ते मुनीश्वर । सर्वदा सुखदं नॄणां भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायकम्

itthaṁ durgāsucaritaṁ varṇitaṁ te munīśvara sarvadā sukhadaṁ nṝṇāṁ bhuktimuktipradāyakam

"Thus, O lord of sages, has the fine account of Durga been related to you — ever bringing happiness to men, granting both enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.67.50)

य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यं श्रावयेद्वा समाहितः । पठेद्वा पाठयेद्वापि सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात्

ya idaṁ śṛṇuyānnityaṁ śrāvayedvā samāhitaḥ paṭhedvā pāṭhayedvāpi sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt

"Whoever hears this always, or, with focused mind, causes it to be heard, or recites it, or has it recited, obtains all desires."
