Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.94.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तयोर्भक्तिं शिवे ज्ञात्वा परामव्यभिचारिणीम् । सर्वे शक्रादयो देवाश्चिचिन्तुरिति नारद

brahmovāca tayorbhaktiṁ śive jñātvā parāmavyabhicāriṇīm sarve śakrādayo devāścicinturiti nārada

Brahma said: "Knowing their supreme and unwavering devotion to Shiva, all the gods, Indra and the rest, began to think this over, O Narada."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.94.2)

देवा ऊचुः । एकान्तभक्त्या शैलश्चेत्कन्यां तस्मै प्रदास्यति । ध्रुवं निर्वाणतां सद्यः स प्राप्स्यति च भारते

devā ūcuḥ ekāntabhaktyā śailaścetkanyāṁ tasmai pradāsyati dhruvaṁ nirvāṇatāṁ sadyaḥ sa prāpsyati ca bhārate

The gods said: "If the mountain, out of single-minded devotion, gives his daughter to him, he will surely attain liberation at once, here in Bharata."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.94.3)

अनन्तरत्नाधारश्चेत्पृथ्वीं त्यक्त्वा प्रयास्यति । रत्नगर्भाभिधा भूमिर्मिथ्यैव भविता ध्रुवम्

anantaratnādhāraścetpṛthvīṁ tyaktvā prayāsyati ratnagarbhābhidhā bhūmirmithyaiva bhavitā dhruvam

"If he, holder of endless jewels, leaves the earth and departs, the earth's very name 'Ratnagarbha' -- jewel-wombed -- will surely become a falsehood."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.94.4)

स्थावरत्वं परित्यज्य दिव्यरूपं विधाय सः । कन्यां शूलभृते दत्त्वा शिवलोकं गमिष्यति

sthāvaratvaṁ parityajya divyarūpaṁ vidhāya saḥ kanyāṁ śūlabhṛte dattvā śivalokaṁ gamiṣyati

"Giving up his fixed, mountainous state and assuming a divine form, having given his daughter to the trident-bearer, he will go to Shiva's world."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.94.5)

महादेवस्य सारूप्यं लप्स्यते नात्र संशयः । तत्र भुक्त्वा वरान्भोगांस्ततो मोक्षमवाप्स्यति

mahādevasya sārūpyaṁ lapsyate nātra saṁśayaḥ tatra bhuktvā varānbhogāṁstato mokṣamavāpsyati

"He will attain a form like Mahadeva's own, of this there is no doubt; there, having enjoyed excellent pleasures, he will thereafter attain liberation."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.94.6)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्यालोच्य सुराः सर्वे कृत्वा चामन्त्रणं मिथः । प्रस्थापयितुमैच्छंस्ते गुरुं तत्र सुविस्मिताः

brahmovāca ityālocya surāḥ sarve kṛtvā cāmantraṇaṁ mithaḥ prasthāpayitumaicchaṁste guruṁ tatra suvismitāḥ

Brahma said: "Having thus deliberated and consulted one another, all the gods, greatly astonished, wished to send their guru there."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.94.7)

ततः शक्रादयो देवाः सर्वे गुरुनिकेतनम् । जग्मुः प्रीत्या सविनया नारद स्वार्थसाधकाः

tataḥ śakrādayo devāḥ sarve guruniketanam jagmuḥ prītyā savinayā nārada svārthasādhakāḥ

"Then, O Narada, Indra and all the gods, eager to accomplish their own purpose, went with love and humility to the guru's dwelling."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.94.8)

गत्वा तत्र गुरुं नत्वा सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः । चक्रुर्निवेदनं तस्मै गुरवे वृत्तमादरात्

gatvā tatra guruṁ natvā sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ cakrurnivedanaṁ tasmai gurave vṛttamādarāt

"Having gone there and bowed to the guru, all the gods, together with Indra, respectfully reported the whole matter to that guru."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.94.9)

देवा ऊचुः । गुरो हिमालयगृहं गच्छास्मत्कार्यसिद्धये । तत्र गत्वा प्रयत्नेन कुरु निन्दां च शूलिनः

devā ūcuḥ guro himālayagṛhaṁ gacchāsmatkāryasiddhaye tatra gatvā prayatnena kuru nindāṁ ca śūlinaḥ

The gods said: "O guru, go to Himalaya's house for the accomplishment of our purpose; having gone there, with effort, slander the trident-bearer."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.94.10)

पिनाकिना विना दुर्गा वरं नान्यं वरिष्यति । अनिच्छया सुतां दत्त्वा फलं तूर्णं लभिष्यति

pinākinā vinā durgā varaṁ nānyaṁ variṣyati anicchayā sutāṁ dattvā phalaṁ tūrṇaṁ labhiṣyati

"Durga will choose no other husband than the trident-bearer; having given his daughter unwillingly, he will swiftly obtain the fruit of it."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.94.11)

कालेनैवाधुना शैल इदानीं भुवि तिष्ठतु । अनेकरत्नाधारं तं स्थापय त्वं क्षितौ गुरौ

kālenaivādhunā śaila idānīṁ bhuvi tiṣṭhatu anekaratnādhāraṁ taṁ sthāpaya tvaṁ kṣitau gurau

"Let the mountain, for a while yet, remain fixed upon the earth; O guru, keep him, holder of many jewels, still established here on earth."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.94.12)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति देववचः श्रुत्वा प्रददौ कर्णयोः करम् । न स्वीचकार स गुरुः स्मरन्नाम शिवेति च

brahmovāca iti devavacaḥ śrutvā pradadau karṇayoḥ karam na svīcakāra sa guruḥ smarannāma śiveti ca

Brahma said: "Hearing this word of the gods, he placed his hands upon his own ears; that guru, remembering the name of Shiva, would not consent."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.94.13)

अथ स्मृत्वा महादेवं बृहस्पतिरुदारधीः । उवाच देववर्यांश्च धिक्कृत्वा च पुनः पुनः

atha smṛtvā mahādevaṁ bṛhaspatirudāradhīḥ uvāca devavaryāṁśca dhikkṛtvā ca punaḥ punaḥ

"Then Brihaspati, of noble intellect, remembering Mahadeva, spoke to the foremost of the gods, rebuking them again and again."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.94.14)

बृहस्पतिरुवाच । सर्वे देवाः स्वार्थपराः परार्थध्वंसकारकाः । कृत्वा शङ्करनिन्दां हि यास्यामि नरकं ध्रुवम्

bṛhaspatiruvāca sarve devāḥ svārthaparāḥ parārthadhvaṁsakārakāḥ kṛtvā śaṅkaranindāṁ hi yāsyāmi narakaṁ dhruvam

Brihaspati said: "All you gods are bent only on self-interest, destroyers of another's good; were I to slander Shankara, I would surely go to hell."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.94.15)

कश्चिन्मध्ये च युष्माकं गच्छेच्छैलान्तिकं सुराः । सम्पादयेत्स्वाभिमतं शैलेन्द्रं प्रतिबोध्य च

kaścinmadhye ca yuṣmākaṁ gacchecchailāntikaṁ surāḥ sampādayetsvābhimataṁ śailendraṁ pratibodhya ca

"Let one among you, O gods, go near the mountain, and, having persuaded the lord of mountains, accomplish your own desired end."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.94.16)

अनिच्छया सुतां दत्त्वा सुखं तिष्ठतु भारते । तस्मै भक्त्या सुतां दत्त्वा मोक्षं प्राप्स्यति निश्चितम्

anicchayā sutāṁ dattvā sukhaṁ tiṣṭhatu bhārate tasmai bhaktyā sutāṁ dattvā mokṣaṁ prāpsyati niścitam

"Let him, giving his daughter unwillingly, remain happy in Bharata; giving her with devotion, he will surely attain liberation."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.94.17)

पश्चात्सप्तर्षयः सर्वे बोधयिष्यन्ति पर्वतम् । पिनाकिना विना दुर्गा वरं नान्यं वरिष्यति

paścātsaptarṣayaḥ sarve bodhayiṣyanti parvatam pinākinā vinā durgā varaṁ nānyaṁ variṣyati

"Afterward all the seven sages will persuade the mountain; even so, Durga will choose no husband other than the trident-bearer."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.94.18)

अथवा गच्छत सुरा ब्रह्मलोकं सवासवाः । वृत्तं कथयत स्वं तत्स वः कार्यं करिष्यति

athavā gacchata surā brahmalokaṁ savāsavāḥ vṛttaṁ kathayata svaṁ tatsa vaḥ kāryaṁ kariṣyati

"Or else, O gods, go together with Indra to Brahmaloka; relate your matter there -- he will accomplish your task."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.94.19)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तच्छ्रुत्वा ते समालोच्याजग्मुर्मम सभां सुराः । सर्वे निवेदयाञ्चक्रुर्नत्वा तद्गतमादरात्

brahmovāca tacchrutvā te samālocyājagmurmama sabhāṁ surāḥ sarve nivedayāñcakrurnatvā tadgatamādarāt

Brahma said: "Having heard this and deliberated, those gods came to my assembly; having bowed, all of them respectfully reported their whole affair."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.94.20)

देवानां तद्वचः श्रुत्वा शिवनिन्दाकरं तदा । वेदवक्ता विलप्याहं तानवोचं सुरान्मुने

devānāṁ tadvacaḥ śrutvā śivanindākaraṁ tadā vedavaktā vilapyāhaṁ tānavocaṁ surānmune

"Hearing the gods' request that I slander Shiva, I, the speaker of the Vedas, O sage, lamenting, spoke thus to those gods."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.94.21)

ब्रह्मोवाच । नाहं कर्तुं क्षमो वत्साः शिवनिन्दां सुदुस्सहाम् । सम्पद्विनाशरूपाञ्च विपदां बीजरूपिणीम्

brahmovāca nāhaṁ kartuṁ kṣamo vatsāḥ śivanindāṁ sudussahām sampadvināśarūpāñca vipadāṁ bījarūpiṇīm

Brahma said: "I am not capable, O children, of the utterly unbearable act of slandering Shiva -- an act that is the very form of ruin, the very seed of calamity."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.94.22)

सुरा गच्छत कैलासं सन्तोषयत शङ्करम् । प्रस्थापयत तं शीघ्रं हिमालयगृहं प्रति

surā gacchata kailāsaṁ santoṣayata śaṅkaram prasthāpayata taṁ śīghraṁ himālayagṛhaṁ prati

"Go, O gods, to Kailasa, and please Shankara; send him quickly toward Himalaya's house."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.94.23)

स गच्छेदुपशैलेशमात्मनिन्दां करोतु वै । परनिन्दा विनाशाय स्वनिन्दा यशसे मता

sa gacchedupaśaileśamātmanindāṁ karotu vai paranindā vināśāya svanindā yaśase matā

"Let him go himself to the lord of mountains and speak against himself; for slandering another leads only to ruin, while self-deprecation is held to bring glory."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.94.24)

ब्रह्मोवाच । श्रुत्वेति मद्वचो देवा मां प्रणम्य मुदा च ते । कैलासं प्रययुः शीघ्रं शैलानामधिपं गिरिम्

brahmovāca śrutveti madvaco devā māṁ praṇamya mudā ca te kailāsaṁ prayayuḥ śīghraṁ śailānāmadhipaṁ girim

Brahma said: "Hearing this word of mine, the gods, bowing to me with joy, went quickly to Kailasa, sovereign of all mountains."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.94.25)

तत्र गत्वा शिवं दृष्ट्वा प्रणम्य नतमस्तकाः । सुकृताञ्जलयः सर्वे तुष्टुवुस्तं सुरा हरम्

tatra gatvā śivaṁ dṛṣṭvā praṇamya natamastakāḥ sukṛtāñjalayaḥ sarve tuṣṭuvustaṁ surā haram

"Having gone there and seen Shiva, all the gods, bowing with heads lowered, hands duly joined, praised that Hara."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.94.26)

देवा ऊचुः । देवदेव महादेव करुणाकर शङ्कर । वयं त्वां शरणापन्नाः कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते

devā ūcuḥ devadeva mahādeva karuṇākara śaṅkara vayaṁ tvāṁ śaraṇāpannāḥ kṛpāṁ kuru namo'stu te

The gods said: "O God of gods, Mahadeva, O compassionate Shankara! We have taken refuge in you; show grace -- salutations to you."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.94.27)

त्वं भक्तवत्सलः स्वामिन्भक्तकार्यकरः सदा । दीनोद्धरः कृपासिन्धुर्भक्तापद्विनिमोचकः

tvaṁ bhaktavatsalaḥ svāminbhaktakāryakaraḥ sadā dīnoddharaḥ kṛpāsindhurbhaktāpadvinimocakaḥ

"You, O Lord, are ever fond of your devotees, ever accomplishing your devotees' purpose; the uplifter of the lowly, the ocean of compassion, the releaser of devotees from calamity."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.94.28)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति स्तुत्वा महेशानं सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः । सर्वं निवेदयाञ्चक्रुस्तद्वृत्तं तत आदरात्

brahmovāca iti stutvā maheśānaṁ sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ sarvaṁ nivedayāñcakrustadvṛttaṁ tata ādarāt

Brahma said: "Having thus praised Maheshana, all the gods, along with Indra, respectfully related to him the whole account of that matter."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.94.29)

तच्छ्रुत्वा देववचनं स्वीचकार महेश्वरः । देवान् सुयापयामास तानाश्वास्य विहस्य सः

tacchrutvā devavacanaṁ svīcakāra maheśvaraḥ devān suyāpayāmāsa tānāśvāsya vihasya saḥ

"Hearing the gods' words, Maheshvara agreed; consoling them and smiling, he sent the gods away well satisfied."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.94.30)

देवा मुमुदिरे सर्वे शीघ्रं गत्वा स्वमन्दिरम् । सिद्धं मत्वा स्वकार्यं हि प्रशंसन्तः सदाशिवम्

devā mumudire sarve śīghraṁ gatvā svamandiram siddhaṁ matvā svakāryaṁ hi praśaṁsantaḥ sadāśivam

"All the gods, delighted, went quickly to their own abodes, considering their task accomplished, praising Sadashiva."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.94.31)

ततः स भगवाञ्छम्भुर्महेशो भक्तवत्सलः । प्रययौ शैलभूपञ्च मायेशो निर्विकारवान्

tataḥ sa bhagavāñchambhurmaheśo bhaktavatsalaḥ prayayau śailabhūpañca māyeśo nirvikāravān

"Then that Bhagavan Shambhu, Mahesha, ever fond of his devotees, the lord of Maya, free of change, set out toward the lord of mountains."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.94.32)

यदा शैलः सभामध्ये समुवास मुदान्वितः । बन्धुवर्गैः परिवृतः पार्वतीसहितः स्वयम्

yadā śailaḥ sabhāmadhye samuvāsa mudānvitaḥ bandhuvargaiḥ parivṛtaḥ pārvatīsahitaḥ svayam

"When the mountain sat in the midst of his assembly, filled with joy, surrounded by his kinsmen, with Parvati herself beside him --"

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.94.33)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र ह्याजगाम सदाशिवः । दण्डी छत्री दिव्यवासा बिभ्रत्तिलकमुज्ज्वलम्

etasminnantare tatra hyājagāma sadāśivaḥ daṇḍī chatrī divyavāsā bibhrattilakamujjvalam

"meanwhile Sadashiva arrived there -- carrying a staff and umbrella, in divine dress, bearing a shining mark of tilaka."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.94.34)

करे स्फटिकमालां च शालग्रामं गले दधत् । जपन्नाम हरेर्भक्त्या साधुवेषधरो द्विजः

kare sphaṭikamālāṁ ca śālagrāmaṁ gale dadhat japannāma harerbhaktyā sādhuveṣadharo dvijaḥ

"Bearing a crystal rosary in his hand and a shalagrama stone at his throat, reciting the name of Hari with devotion -- a brahmin dressed in saintly garb."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.94.35)

तं च दृष्ट्वा समुत्तस्थौ सगणोऽपि हिमालयः । ननाम दण्डवद्भूमौ भक्त्यातिथिमपूर्वकम्

taṁ ca dṛṣṭvā samuttasthau sagaṇo'pi himālayaḥ nanāma daṇḍavadbhūmau bhaktyātithimapūrvakam

"Seeing him, Himalaya, together with his attendants, rose up; he bowed flat upon the ground, honoring that unprecedented guest with devotion."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.94.36)

ननाम पार्वती भक्त्या प्राणेशं विप्ररूपिणम् । ज्ञात्वा तं मनसा देवी तुष्टाव परया मुदा

nanāma pārvatī bhaktyā prāṇeśaṁ viprarūpiṇam jñātvā taṁ manasā devī tuṣṭāva parayā mudā

"Parvati too bowed with devotion to the Lord of her life, who had taken a brahmin's form; recognizing him within her mind, the goddess praised him with the greatest joy."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.94.37)

आशिषं युयुजे विप्रः सर्वेषां प्रीतितश्शिवः । शिवाया अधिकं तात मनोऽभिलषितं हृदा

āśiṣaṁ yuyuje vipraḥ sarveṣāṁ prītitaśśivaḥ śivāyā adhikaṁ tāta mano'bhilaṣitaṁ hṛdā

"That brahmin-formed Shiva joyfully bestowed his blessing on all; yet, O dear one, his heart's true desire lay especially with Shiva."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.94.38)

मधुपर्कादिकं सर्वं जग्राह ब्राह्मणो मुदा । दत्तं शैलाधिराजेन हिमागेन महादरात्

madhuparkādikaṁ sarvaṁ jagrāha brāhmaṇo mudā dattaṁ śailādhirājena himāgena mahādarāt

"The brahmin joyfully accepted all the offerings of madhuparka and the rest, given with the greatest reverence by the mountain-king Himachal."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.94.39)

पप्रच्छ कुशलं चास्य हिमाद्रिः पर्वतोत्तमः । तं द्विजेन्द्रं महाप्रीत्या सम्पूज्य विधिवन्मुने

papraccha kuśalaṁ cāsya himādriḥ parvatottamaḥ taṁ dvijendraṁ mahāprītyā sampūjya vidhivanmune

"Himalaya, best of mountains, O sage, having duly honored that lord of the twice-born with the greatest love, asked after his welfare."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.94.40)

पुनः पप्रच्छ शैलेशस्तं ततः को भवानिति । उवाच शीघ्रं विप्रेन्द्रो गिरीन्द्रं सादरं वचः

punaḥ papraccha śaileśastaṁ tataḥ ko bhavāniti uvāca śīghraṁ viprendro girīndraṁ sādaraṁ vacaḥ

"Then the lord of mountains asked again, 'Who are you?'; that lord of the twice-born spoke swiftly, respectfully, to the mountain-king."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.94.41)

विप्रेन्द्र उवाच । ब्राह्मणोऽहं गिरिश्रेष्ठ वैष्णवो बुधसत्तमः । घटिकीं वृत्तिमाश्रित्य भ्रमामि धरणीतले

viprendra uvāca brāhmaṇo'haṁ giriśreṣṭha vaiṣṇavo budhasattamaḥ ghaṭikīṁ vṛttimāśritya bhramāmi dharaṇītale

The lord of the twice-born said: "I am a brahmin, O best of mountains, a Vaishnava, foremost of the wise; taking to a wanderer's livelihood, I roam over the surface of the earth."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.94.42)

मनोयायी सर्वगामी सर्वज्ञोऽहं गुरोर्बलात् । परोपकारी शुद्धात्मा दयासिन्धुर्विकारहा

manoyāyī sarvagāmī sarvajño'haṁ gurorbalāt paropakārī śuddhātmā dayāsindhurvikārahā

"I go wherever my mind wills, I go everywhere, and by my guru's strength I am all-knowing; devoted to others' good, pure of soul, an ocean of compassion, and a remover of afflictions."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.94.43)

मया ज्ञातं हराय त्वं स्वसुतां दातुमिच्छसि । इमां पद्मसमां दिव्यां वररूपां सुलक्षणाम्

mayā jñātaṁ harāya tvaṁ svasutāṁ dātumicchasi imāṁ padmasamāṁ divyāṁ vararūpāṁ sulakṣaṇām

"I have come to know that you wish to give this daughter of yours -- lovely as a lotus, divine, of excellent form and auspicious marks -- to Hara."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.94.44)

निराश्रयायासङ्गाय कुरूपायागुणाय च । श्मशानवासिने व्यालग्राहिरूपाय योगिने

nirāśrayāyāsaṅgāya kurūpāyāguṇāya ca śmaśānavāsine vyālagrāhirūpāya yogine

"To one who is without shelter, without attachment, of ugly form, without virtue; a dweller of cremation grounds, in the guise of a snake-catcher, a yogi;"

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.94.45)

दिग्वाससे कुगात्राय व्यालभूषणधारिणे । अज्ञातकुलनाम्ने च कुशीलायाविहारिणे

digvāsase kugātrāya vyālabhūṣaṇadhāriṇe ajñātakulanāmne ca kuśīlāyāvihāriṇe

"sky-clad, of misshapen limbs, adorned with serpents; of unknown lineage and name, of low conduct, restless in his wandering;"

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.94.46)

विभूतिदिग्धदेहाय सङ्क्रुद्धायाविवेकिने । अज्ञातवयसेऽतीव कुजटाधारिणे सदा

vibhūtidigdhadehāya saṅkruddhāyāvivekine ajñātavayase'tīva kujaṭādhāriṇe sadā

"his body smeared with ash, quick to wrath, without discernment; of unknown age, and ever wearing unkempt, matted locks;"

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.94.47)

सर्वाश्रयाय भ्रमिणे नागहाराय भिक्षवे कुमार्गनिरतायाथ वेदाऽध्वत्यागिने हठात्

sarvāśrayāya bhramiṇe nāgahārāya bhikṣave kumārganiratāyātha vedā'dhvatyāgine haṭhāt

"the shelter of all, and yet a wanderer, wearing a garland of serpents, a beggar; devoted to a crooked path, one who forcibly abandons the way of the Vedas --"

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.94.48)

इयं ते बुद्धिरचल न हि मङ्गलदा खलु । विबोध ज्ञानिनां श्रेष्ठ नारायणकुलोद्भव

iyaṁ te buddhiracala na hi maṅgaladā khalu vibodha jñānināṁ śreṣṭha nārāyaṇakulodbhava

"This resolve of yours is unshakable, yet it is truly not auspicious; understand this, O best of the wise, O one born of Narayana's own lineage."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.94.49)

न ते पात्रानुरूपश्च पार्वतीदानकर्मणि । महाजनः स्मेरमुखः श्रुतमात्राद्भविष्यति

na te pātrānurūpaśca pārvatīdānakarmaṇi mahājanaḥ smeramukhaḥ śrutamātrādbhaviṣyati

"He is no fit recipient in this matter of giving Parvati away; the moment people hear of it, they will only smile."

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.94.50)

पश्य शैलाधिप त्वं च न तस्यैकोऽस्ति बान्धवः । महारत्नाकरः त्वं च तस्य किञ्चिद्धनं न हि

paśya śailādhipa tvaṁ ca na tasyaiko'sti bāndhavaḥ mahāratnākaraḥ tvaṁ ca tasya kiñciddhanaṁ na hi

"Consider, O lord of mountains: he has not one kinsman; you are a great treasury of jewels, while he possesses no wealth whatsoever."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.94.51)

बान्धवान्मेनकां कुध्रपते शीघ्रं सुतांस्तथा । सर्वान्पृच्छ प्रयत्नेन पण्डितान्पार्वतीं विना

bāndhavānmenakāṁ kudhrapate śīghraṁ sutāṁstathā sarvānpṛccha prayatnena paṇḍitānpārvatīṁ vinā

"O lord of the mountains, ask, with every effort, your kinsmen, Menaka, your sons, and all the wise men -- all except Parvati herself."

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.94.52)

रोगिणो नौषधं शश्वद्रोचते गिरिसत्तम । कुपथ्यं रोचतेऽभीक्ष्णं महादोषकरं सदा

rogiṇo nauṣadhaṁ śaśvadrocate girisattama kupathyaṁ rocate'bhīkṣṇaṁ mahādoṣakaraṁ sadā

"A sick man, O best of mountains, never favors his medicine; he ever craves the unwholesome food that always brings the greatest harm."

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.94.53)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा ब्राह्मणः शीघ्रं स वै भुक्त्वा मुदान्वितः । जगाम स्वालयं शान्तो नानालीलाकरश्शिवः

brahmovāca ityuktvā brāhmaṇaḥ śīghraṁ sa vai bhuktvā mudānvitaḥ jagāma svālayaṁ śānto nānālīlākaraśśivaḥ

Brahma said: "Having said this, that brahmin, having quickly and joyfully eaten, calmly departed for his own abode -- Shiva, the doer of manifold plays."
