Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.93.1)

नारद उवाच । विधे तात महाभाग धन्यस्त्वं परमार्थदृक् । अद्भुतेयं कथाश्रावि त्वदनुग्रहतो मया

nārada uvāca vidhe tāta mahābhāga dhanyastvaṁ paramārthadṛk adbhuteyaṁ kathāśrāvi tvadanugrahato mayā

Narada said: "O ordainer, dear father, greatly fortunate one, seer of the highest truth! By your grace I have heard this wondrous story."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.93.2)

गते हरे स्वशैले हि पार्वती सर्वमङ्गला । किं चकार गता कुत्र तन्मे वद महामते

gate hare svaśaile hi pārvatī sarvamaṅgalā kiṁ cakāra gatā kutra tanme vada mahāmate

"When Hara had gone to his own mountain, what did all-auspicious Parvati do? Where did she go? Tell me this, O great-minded one."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.93.3)

ब्रह्मोवाच । शृणु सुप्रीतितस्तात यज्जातं तदनन्तरम् । हरे गते निजस्थाने तद् वदामि शिवं स्मरन्

brahmovāca śṛṇu suprītitastāta yajjātaṁ tadanantaram hare gate nijasthāne tad vadāmi śivaṁ smaran

Brahma said: "Listen, dear one, with great love, to what happened after that; when Hara had gone to his own abode, I tell it now, remembering Shiva."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.93.4)

पार्वत्यपि सखीयुक्ता रूपं कृत्वा तु सार्थकम् । जगाम स्वपितुर्गेहं महादेवेति वादिनी

pārvatyapi sakhīyuktā rūpaṁ kṛtvā tu sārthakam jagāma svapiturgehaṁ mahādeveti vādinī

"Parvati too, accompanied by her friend, having made her form worthy of the moment, went to her father's house, proclaiming 'Mahadeva has accepted me'."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.93.5)

पार्वत्यागमनं श्रुत्वा मेना च स हिमाचलः । दिव्यं यानं समारुह्य प्रययौ हर्षविह्वलः

pārvatyāgamanaṁ śrutvā menā ca sa himācalaḥ divyaṁ yānaṁ samāruhya prayayau harṣavihvalaḥ

"Hearing of Parvati's arrival, Mena and Himachal, mounting a celestial vehicle, set out, overwhelmed with joy."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.93.6)

पुरोहितश्च पौराश्च सख्यश्चैवाप्यनेकशः । सम्बन्धिनस्तथान्ये च सर्वे ते च समाययुः

purohitaśca paurāśca sakhyaścaivāpyanekaśaḥ sambandhinastathānye ca sarve te ca samāyayuḥ

"The family priest, the city-dwellers, many friends, and other kinsfolk as well -- all of them gathered there."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.93.7)

भ्रातरः सकला जग्मुर्मैनाकप्रमुखास्तदा । जयशब्दं प्रब्रुवन्तो महाहर्षसमन्विताः

bhrātaraḥ sakalā jagmurmainākapramukhāstadā jayaśabdaṁ prabruvanto mahāharṣasamanvitāḥ

"All the brothers, led by Mainaka, went there then, crying out words of victory, filled with the greatest joy."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.93.8)

संस्थाप्य मङ्गलघटं राजवर्त्मनि राजिते । चन्दनागरुकस्तूरीफलशाखासमन्विते

saṁsthāpya maṅgalaghaṭaṁ rājavartmani rājite candanāgarukastūrīphalaśākhāsamanvite

"Along the resplendent royal road, auspicious pots were set up, adorned with sandalwood, aloe-wood, musk, and fruit-laden branches."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.93.9)

सुपुरोधाब्राह्मणैश्च मुनिभिर्ब्रह्मवादिभिः । नारीभिर्नर्तकीभिश्च गजेन्द्रादिसुशोभितैः

supurodhābrāhmaṇaiśca munibhirbrahmavādibhiḥ nārībhirnartakībhiśca gajendrādisuśobhitaiḥ

"It was graced with fine priests and brahmins, with sages versed in the Vedas, with women and dancers, and beautifully adorned with elephants and the like."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.93.10)

परितः परितो रम्भास्तम्भवृन्दसमन्विते । पतिपुत्रवतीयोषित्समूहैर्दीपहस्तकैः

paritaḥ parito rambhāstambhavṛndasamanvite patiputravatīyoṣitsamūhairdīpahastakaiḥ

"All around it was lined with rows of plantain-tree pillars, and with crowds of women blessed with living husbands and sons, holding lamps in their hands."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.93.11)

द्विजवृन्दैश्च संयुक्ते कुर्वद्भिर्मङ्गलध्वनिम् । नानाप्रकारवाद्यैश्च शङ्खध्वनिभिरन्विते

dvijavṛndaiśca saṁyukte kurvadbhirmaṅgaladhvanim nānāprakāravādyaiśca śaṅkhadhvanibhiranvite

"It was filled with crowds of brahmins raising auspicious sounds, and resounded with many kinds of instruments and the blowing of conch shells."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.93.12)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे दुर्गाजगाम स्वपुरान्तिकम् । विशन्ती नगरं देवी ददर्श पितरौ पुनः

etasminnantare durgājagāma svapurāntikam viśantī nagaraṁ devī dadarśa pitarau punaḥ

"Meanwhile Durga arrived near her own city; entering the city, the goddess again beheld her parents."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.93.13)

सुप्रसन्नौ प्रधावन्तौ हर्षविह्वलमानसौ । दृष्ट्वा काली सुप्रहृष्टा स्वालिभिः प्रणनाम तौ

suprasannau pradhāvantau harṣavihvalamānasau dṛṣṭvā kālī suprahṛṣṭā svālibhiḥ praṇanāma tau

"Seeing them both, greatly pleased and running toward her, their minds overwhelmed with joy, Kali, greatly delighted, bowed to them along with her companions."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.93.14)

तौ सम्पूर्णाशिषं दत्त्वा चक्रतुस्तौ स्ववक्षसि । हे वत्से त्वेवमुच्चार्य रुदन्तौ प्रेमविह्वलौ

tau sampūrṇāśiṣaṁ dattvā cakratustau svavakṣasi he vatse tvevamuccārya rudantau premavihvalau

"Having given her their fullest blessing, the two of them clasped her to their breast; saying 'O child!' again and again, weeping, overwhelmed with love."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.93.15)

ततः स्वकीया अप्यस्या अन्या नार्योऽपि सम्मुदा । भ्रातृस्त्रियोऽपि सुप्रीत्या दृढालिङ्गनमादधुः

tataḥ svakīyā apyasyā anyā nāryo'pi sammudā bhrātṛstriyo'pi suprītyā dṛḍhāliṅganamādadhuḥ

"Then her own kinswomen, other women too with great joy, and her brothers' wives as well, embraced her fast, with love."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.93.16)

साधितं हि त्वया सम्यक् सुकार्यं कुलतारणम् । त्वत्सदाचरणेनापि पाविताः स्माखिला वयम्

sādhitaṁ hi tvayā samyak sukāryaṁ kulatāraṇam tvatsadācaraṇenāpi pāvitāḥ smākhilā vayam

"'You have truly accomplished a great deed -- the deliverance of our whole lineage; by your own good conduct we all have been purified as well.'"

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.93.17)

इति सर्वे सुप्रशंस्य प्रणेमुस्तां प्रहर्षिताः । चन्दनैः सुप्रसूनैश्च समानर्चुः शिवां मुदा

iti sarve supraśaṁsya praṇemustāṁ praharṣitāḥ candanaiḥ suprasūnaiśca samānarcuḥ śivāṁ mudā

"Thus, having praised her greatly, all bowed to her with delight, and joyfully worshipped Shiva with sandalwood and fine flowers."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.93.18)

तस्मिन्नवसरे देवा विमानस्था मुदाम्बरे । पुष्पवृष्टिं शुभां चक्रुर्नत्वा तां तुष्टुवुः स्तवैः

tasminnavasare devā vimānasthā mudāmbare puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ śubhāṁ cakrurnatvā tāṁ tuṣṭuvuḥ stavaiḥ

"At that time the gods, seated in their celestial cars in the sky, joyfully rained down an auspicious shower of flowers, and, bowing to her, praised her with hymns."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.93.19)

तदा तां च रथे स्थाप्य सर्वे शोभान्विते वरे । पुरं प्रवेशयामासुः सर्वे विप्रादयो मुदा

tadā tāṁ ca rathe sthāpya sarve śobhānvite vare puraṁ praveśayāmāsuḥ sarve viprādayo mudā

"Then, having seated her upon a chariot adorned with every splendor, all the brahmins and the rest joyfully brought her into the city."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.93.20)

अथ विप्राः पुरोधाश्च सख्योऽन्याश्च स्त्रियः शिवम् । गृहं प्रवेशयामासुर्बहुमानपुरस्सरम्

atha viprāḥ purodhāśca sakhyo'nyāśca striyaḥ śivam gṛhaṁ praveśayāmāsurbahumānapurassaram

"Then the brahmins, the family priest, and the other women and friends brought Shiva into the house, with every honor going before her."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.93.21)

स्त्रियो निर्मञ्छनं चक्रुर्विप्रा युयुजुराशिषः । हिमवान्मेनका माता मुमोदाति मुनीश्वर

striyo nirmañchanaṁ cakrurviprā yuyujurāśiṣaḥ himavānmenakā mātā mumodāti munīśvara

"The women performed the waving of lamps, the brahmins pronounced their blessings; Himavan and mother Menaka, O lord of sages, rejoiced greatly."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.93.22)

स्वाश्रमं सफलं मेने कुपुत्रात्पुत्रिका वरा । हिमवान्नारदं त्वां च संस्तुवन् साधु साध्विति

svāśramaṁ saphalaṁ mene kuputrātputrikā varā himavānnāradaṁ tvāṁ ca saṁstuvan sādhu sādhviti

"He considered his own household made fruitful, thinking, 'a good daughter surpasses a poor son'; Himavan praised Narada and you, saying, 'well done, well done!'"

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.93.23)

ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च बन्दिभ्यः पर्वतेन्द्रो धनं ददौ । मङ्गलं पाठयामास स द्विजेभ्यो महोत्सवम्

brāhmaṇebhyaśca bandibhyaḥ parvatendro dhanaṁ dadau maṅgalaṁ pāṭhayāmāsa sa dvijebhyo mahotsavam

"The lord of mountains gave wealth to the brahmins and to the bards; he had the twice-born recite auspicious blessings and held a great festival."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.93.24)

एवं स्वकन्यया हृष्टौ पितरौ भ्रातरस्तथा । जामयश्च महाप्रीत्या समूषुः प्राङ्गणे मुने

evaṁ svakanyayā hṛṣṭau pitarau bhrātarastathā jāmayaśca mahāprītyā samūṣuḥ prāṅgaṇe mune

"Thus, delighted with their daughter, her parents, her brothers, and her sisters-in-law, O sage, dwelt together in the courtyard with the greatest love."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.93.25)

ततः स हिमवान् तात सुप्रहृष्टाः प्रसन्नधीः । सम्मान्य सकलान्प्रीत्या स्नातुं गङ्गां जगाम ह

tataḥ sa himavān tāta suprahṛṣṭāḥ prasannadhīḥ sammānya sakalānprītyā snātuṁ gaṅgāṁ jagāma ha

"Then, O son, Himavan, greatly delighted and of pleased mind, having honored everyone with love, went to bathe in the Ganga."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.93.26)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शम्भुः सुलीलो भक्तवत्सलः । सुनर्तकनटो भूत्वा मेनकासन्निधिं ययौ

etasminnantare śambhuḥ sulīlo bhaktavatsalaḥ sunartakanaṭo bhūtvā menakāsannidhiṁ yayau

"Meanwhile Shambhu, playful and ever fond of his devotees, became a skilled dancer and went near to Mena."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.93.27)

शृङ्गं वामे करे धृत्वा दक्षिणे डमरुं तथा । पृष्ठे कन्थां रक्तवासा नृत्यगानविशारदः

śṛṅgaṁ vāme kare dhṛtvā dakṣiṇe ḍamaruṁ tathā pṛṣṭhe kanthāṁ raktavāsā nṛtyagānaviśāradaḥ

"Holding a horn in his left hand and a damaru in his right, a patched cloak on his back, clad in red, skilled in dance and song --"

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.93.28)

ततस्सुनटरूपोऽसौ मेनाया प्राङ्गणे मुदा । चक्रे सुनृत्यं विविधं गानं चातिमनोहरम्

tatassunaṭarūpo'sau menāyā prāṅgaṇe mudā cakre sunṛtyaṁ vividhaṁ gānaṁ cātimanoharam

"then, in that fine dancer's form, he joyfully performed, in Mena's courtyard, many kinds of dance and most enchanting song."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.93.29)

शृङ्गं च डमरुं तत्र वादयामास सुध्वनिम् । महतीं विविधां तत्र स चकार मनोहराम्

śṛṅgaṁ ca ḍamaruṁ tatra vādayāmāsa sudhvanim mahatīṁ vividhāṁ tatra sa cakāra manoharām

"There he played the horn and the damaru with a fine resounding tone; he performed there a great and varied display, enchanting to behold."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.93.30)

तां द्रष्टुं नागराः सर्वे पुरुषाश्च स्त्रियस्तथा । आजग्मुः सहसा तत्र बाला वृद्धा अपि ध्रुवम्

tāṁ draṣṭuṁ nāgarāḥ sarve puruṣāśca striyastathā ājagmuḥ sahasā tatra bālā vṛddhā api dhruvam

"To see it, all the city-folk, men and women alike, came there at once -- children and the aged too, without doubt."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.93.31)

श्रुत्वा सुगीतं तद्दृष्ट्वा सुनृत्यं च मनोहरम् । सहसा मुमुहुः सर्वे मेनापि च तदा मुने

śrutvā sugītaṁ taddṛṣṭvā sunṛtyaṁ ca manoharam sahasā mumuhuḥ sarve menāpi ca tadā mune

"Hearing that fine song and seeing that enchanting dance, all of them were at once enraptured -- and Mena too, O sage, at that time."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.93.32)

मूर्च्छां सम्प्राप सा दुर्गा विलोक्य हृदि शङ्करम् । त्रिशूलादिकचिह्नानि बिभ्रतं चातिसुन्दरम्

mūrcchāṁ samprāpa sā durgā vilokya hṛdi śaṅkaram triśūlādikacihnāni bibhrataṁ cātisundaram

"Beholding Shankara within her heart, she fell into a swoon -- bearing marks such as the trident, and exceedingly beautiful --"

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.93.33)

विभूतिभूषितं रम्यमस्थिमालासमन्वितम् । त्रिलोचनोज्ज्वलद्वक्त्रं नागयज्ञोपवीतकम्

vibhūtibhūṣitaṁ ramyamasthimālāsamanvitam trilocanojjvaladvaktraṁ nāgayajñopavītakam

"adorned with sacred ash, lovely, wearing a garland of bones, three-eyed, his face gleaming, wearing a serpent as his sacred thread --"

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.93.34)

वरं वृण्वित्युक्तवन्तं गौरवर्णं महेश्वरम् । दीनबन्धु दयासिन्धुं सर्वथा सुमनोहरम्

varaṁ vṛṇvityuktavantaṁ gauravarṇaṁ maheśvaram dīnabandhu dayāsindhuṁ sarvathā sumanoharam

"saying 'ask for a boon', golden-hued Maheshvara, friend of the humble, ocean of compassion, most enchanting in every way --"

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.93.35)

हृदयस्थं हरं दृष्ट्वेदृशं सा प्रणनाम तम् । वरं वव्रे मानसं हि पतिर्मे त्वं भवेति च

hṛdayasthaṁ haraṁ dṛṣṭvedṛśaṁ sā praṇanāma tam varaṁ vavre mānasaṁ hi patirme tvaṁ bhaveti ca

"Seeing Hara thus present within her heart, she bowed to him, and in her mind chose this very boon: 'be my husband.'"

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.93.36)

वरं दत्त्वा शिवां चाथ तादृशं प्रीतितो हृदा । अन्तर्धाय पुनस्तत्र सुननर्त स भिक्षुकः

varaṁ dattvā śivāṁ cātha tādṛśaṁ prītito hṛdā antardhāya punastatra sunanarta sa bhikṣukaḥ

"Having thus granted such a boon, with love from his heart, that mendicant vanished there once more, and fell again to dancing."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.93.37)

ततो मेना सुरत्नानि स्वर्णपात्रस्थितानि च । तस्मै दातुं ययौ प्रीत्या तद्भूतिप्रीतमानसः

tato menā suratnāni svarṇapātrasthitāni ca tasmai dātuṁ yayau prītyā tadbhūtiprītamānasaḥ

"Then Mena, her mind delighted by his splendor, went with love to give him fine jewels set in golden vessels."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.93.38)

तानि न स्वीचकारासौ भिक्षां याचे शिवां च ताम् । पुनः सुनृत्यं गानश्च कौतुकात्कर्तुमुद्यतः

tāni na svīcakārāsau bhikṣāṁ yāce śivāṁ ca tām punaḥ sunṛtyaṁ gānaśca kautukātkartumudyataḥ

"He did not accept them; he asked only for alms, and asked for Shiva herself; then, out of playful whim, he made ready to dance and sing once more."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.93.39)

मेना तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा चुकोपाति सुविस्मिता । भिक्षुकं भर्त्सयामास बहिष्कर्तुमियेष सा

menā tadvacanaṁ śrutvā cukopāti suvismitā bhikṣukaṁ bhartsayāmāsa bahiṣkartumiyeṣa sā

"Hearing his words, Mena, greatly astonished, grew intensely angry; she rebuked the mendicant and wished to have him driven out."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.93.40)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र गङ्गातो गिरिराययौ । ददर्श पुरतो भिक्षुं प्राङ्गणस्थं नराकृतिम्

etasminnantare tatra gaṅgāto girirāyayau dadarśa purato bhikṣuṁ prāṅgaṇasthaṁ narākṛtim

"Meanwhile the mountain-lord arrived there from the Ganga; he saw before him, standing in the courtyard, the mendicant in human form."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.93.41)

श्रुत्वा मेनामुखाद् वृत्तं तत्सर्वं सुचुकोप सः । आज्ञां चकारानुचरान्बहिष्कर्तुञ्च तं नटम्

śrutvā menāmukhād vṛttaṁ tatsarvaṁ sucukopa saḥ ājñāṁ cakārānucarānbahiṣkartuñca taṁ naṭam

"Hearing the whole account from Mena's mouth, he became greatly enraged; he ordered his attendants to drive that dancer out."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.93.42)

महाग्निमिव दुःस्पर्शं प्रज्वलन्तं सुतेजसम् । न शशाक बहिष्कर्तुं कोऽपि तं मुनिसत्तम

mahāgnimiva duḥsparśaṁ prajvalantaṁ sutejasam na śaśāka bahiṣkartuṁ ko'pi taṁ munisattama

"Unbearable to the touch like a great fire, blazing with splendor, no one at all, O best of sages, was able to drive him out."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.93.43)

ततः स भिक्षुकस्तात नानालीलाविशारदः । दर्शयामास शैलाय स्वप्रभावमनन्तकम्

tataḥ sa bhikṣukastāta nānālīlāviśāradaḥ darśayāmāsa śailāya svaprabhāvamanantakam

"Then, O dear one, that mendicant, skilled in manifold play, revealed to the mountain his own boundless power."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.93.44)

शैलो ददर्श तं तत्र विष्णुरूपधरं द्रुतम् । किरीटिनं कुण्डलिनं पीतवस्त्रं चतुर्भुजम्

śailo dadarśa taṁ tatra viṣṇurūpadharaṁ drutam kirīṭinaṁ kuṇḍalinaṁ pītavastraṁ caturbhujam

"The mountain saw him there suddenly bearing the form of Vishnu -- crowned, wearing earrings, clad in yellow, four-armed."

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.93.45)

यद्यत्पुष्पादिकं दत्तं पूजाकाले गदाभृते । गात्रे शिरसि तत्सर्वं भिक्षुकस्य ददर्श ह

yadyatpuṣpādikaṁ dattaṁ pūjākāle gadābhṛte gātre śirasi tatsarvaṁ bhikṣukasya dadarśa ha

"Whatever flowers and the like had been offered in worship to the mace-bearer, all of it he saw upon the limbs and head of the mendicant."

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.93.46)

ततो ददर्श जगतां स्रष्टारं स चतुर्मुखम् । रक्तवर्णं पठन्तं च श्रुतिसूक्तं गिरीश्वरः

tato dadarśa jagatāṁ sraṣṭāraṁ sa caturmukham raktavarṇaṁ paṭhantaṁ ca śrutisūktaṁ girīśvaraḥ

"Then the lord of the mountain saw him as the four-faced creator of the worlds, red-hued, reciting the Vedic hymns."

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.93.47)

ततः सूर्यस्वरूपं च जगच्चक्षुस्स्वरूपकम् । ददर्श गिरिराजः स क्षणं कौतुककारिणम्

tataḥ sūryasvarūpaṁ ca jagaccakṣussvarūpakam dadarśa girirājaḥ sa kṣaṇaṁ kautukakāriṇam

"Then the lord of mountains, for a moment, saw him in the very form of the sun, the eye of the world, at his playful whim."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.93.48)

ततो ददर्श तं तात रुद्ररूपं महाद्भुतम् । पार्वती सहितं रम्यं विहसन्तं सुतेजसम्

tato dadarśa taṁ tāta rudrarūpaṁ mahādbhutam pārvatī sahitaṁ ramyaṁ vihasantaṁ sutejasam

"Then, O dear one, he saw him in the most wondrous form of Rudra, lovely, radiant, smiling, together with Parvati."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.93.49)

ततस्तेजस्स्वरूपं च निराकारं निरञ्जनम् । निरुपाधिं निरीहं च महाद्भुतमरूपकम्

tatastejassvarūpaṁ ca nirākāraṁ nirañjanam nirupādhiṁ nirīhaṁ ca mahādbhutamarūpakam

"Then he saw the very form of light itself -- formless, stainless, without attribute, desireless, most wondrous, and shapeless."

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.93.50)

एवं बहूनि रूपाणि तस्य तत्र ददर्श सः । सुविस्मितो बभूवाशु परमानन्दसंयुतः

evaṁ bahūni rūpāṇi tasya tatra dadarśa saḥ suvismito babhūvāśu paramānandasaṁyutaḥ

"Thus he beheld there many forms of that being; he became at once greatly astonished, filled with supreme bliss."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.93.51)

अथासौ भिक्षुवर्यो हि तस्मात्तस्याश्च सूतिकृत् । भिक्षां ययाचे दुर्गां तां नान्यज्जग्राह किञ्चन

athāsau bhikṣuvaryo hi tasmāttasyāśca sūtikṛt bhikṣāṁ yayāce durgāṁ tāṁ nānyajjagrāha kiñcana

"Then that best of mendicants -- he who is the very creator of them both -- asked Durga for alms; he accepted nothing else at all."

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.93.52)

न स्वीचकार शैलेन्द्रो मोहितश्शिवमायया । भिक्षुः किञ्चिन्न जग्राह तत्रैवान्तर्दधे ततः

na svīcakāra śailendro mohitaśśivamāyayā bhikṣuḥ kiñcinna jagrāha tatraivāntardadhe tataḥ

"The lord of mountains, deluded by Shiva's maya, would not consent; the mendicant took nothing at all, and vanished right there."

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.93.53)

तदा बभूव सुज्ञानं मेनाशैलेशयोरिति । आवां शिवो वञ्चयित्वा स्वस्थानं गतवान्प्रभुः

tadā babhūva sujñānaṁ menāśaileśayoriti āvāṁ śivo vañcayitvā svasthānaṁ gatavānprabhuḥ

"Then true understanding dawned on both Mena and the lord of mountains: 'Shiva, having deceived us both, that Lord has gone back to his own abode.'"

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.93.54)

तयोर्विचिन्त्य तत्रैवं शिवे भक्तिरभूत्परा । महामोक्षकरी दिव्या सर्वानन्दप्रदायिनी

tayorvicintya tatraivaṁ śive bhaktirabhūtparā mahāmokṣakarī divyā sarvānandapradāyinī

"Reflecting thus, there arose in both of them a supreme devotion to Shiva -- divine, bestowing great liberation, the giver of every bliss."
