The Story of Padma and Pippalada

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.98.1)

नारद उवाच । अनरण्यस्य चरितं सुतादानसमन्वितम् । श्रुत्वा गिरिवरस्तात किं चकार च तद्वद

nārada uvāca anaraṇyasya caritaṁ sutādānasamanvitam śrutvā girivarastāta kiṁ cakāra ca tadvada

Narada said: "O father, having heard the story of Anaranya, together with the giving away of his daughter, tell me what the best of mountains did next."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.98.2)

ब्रह्मोवाच । अनरण्यस्य चरितं कन्यादानसमन्वितम् । श्रुत्वा पप्रच्छ शैलेशो वसिष्ठं साञ्जलिः पुनः

brahmovāca anaraṇyasya caritaṁ kanyādānasamanvitam śrutvā papraccha śaileśo vasiṣṭhaṁ sāñjaliḥ punaḥ

Brahma said: "Having heard the story of Anaranya, together with the giving away of his daughter, the lord of the mountains, with joined hands, questioned Vasishtha once more."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.98.3)

शैलेश उवाच । वसिष्ठ मुनिशार्दूल ब्रह्मपुत्र कृपानिधे । अनरण्यचरित्रन्ते कथितं परमाद्भुतम्

śaileśa uvāca vasiṣṭha muniśārdūla brahmaputra kṛpānidhe anaraṇyacaritrante kathitaṁ paramādbhutam

The lord of the mountains said: "O Vasishtha, tiger among sages, son of Brahma, ocean of compassion, you have told me the wondrous story of Anaranya."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.98.4)

अनरण्यसुता यस्मात् पिप्पलादं मुनिं पतिम् । सम्प्राप्य किमकार्षीत्सा तच्चरित्रं मुदावहम्

anaraṇyasutā yasmāt pippalādaṁ muniṁ patim samprāpya kimakārṣītsā taccaritraṁ mudāvaham

"Since Anaranya's daughter came to have the sage Pippalada as her husband, what did she do thereafter? Tell me that joyful story."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.98.5)

वसिष्ठ उवाच । पिप्पलादो मुनिवरो वयसा जर्जरोऽधिकः । गत्वा निजाश्रमं नार्यानरण्यसुतया तया

vasiṣṭha uvāca pippalādo munivaro vayasā jarjaro'dhikaḥ gatvā nijāśramaṁ nāryānaraṇyasutayā tayā

Vasishtha said: "Pippalada, that excellent sage, much worn down by age, went to his own hermitage together with that lady, the daughter of Anaranya."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.98.6)

उवास तत्र सुप्रीत्या तपस्वी नातिलम्पटः । तत्रारण्ये गिरिवरे स नित्यं निजधर्मकृत्

uvāsa tatra suprītyā tapasvī nātilampaṭaḥ tatrāraṇye girivare sa nityaṁ nijadharmakṛt

"There that ascetic, not overly given to lust, dwelt happily; O best of mountains, in that forest he continued daily to perform his own proper duties."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.98.7)

अथानरण्यकन्या सा सिषेवे भक्तितो मुनिम् । कर्मणा मनसा वाचा लक्ष्मीर्नारायणं यथा

athānaraṇyakanyā sā siṣeve bhaktito munim karmaṇā manasā vācā lakṣmīrnārāyaṇaṁ yathā

"Then Anaranya's daughter served the sage with devotion, in deed, in mind, and in word, just as Lakshmi serves Narayana."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.98.8)

एकदा स्वर्णदीं स्नातुं गच्छन्तीं सुस्मितां च ताम् । ददर्श पथि धर्मश्च मायया नृपरूपधृक्

ekadā svarṇadīṁ snātuṁ gacchantīṁ susmitāṁ ca tām dadarśa pathi dharmaśca māyayā nṛparūpadhṛk

"One day, as she went, sweetly smiling, to bathe in the river Svarnadi, Dharma, having assumed by his maya the form of a king, saw her upon the way."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.98.9)

चारुरत्नरथस्थश्च नानालङ्कारभूषितः । नवीनयौवनश्श्रीमान्कामदेवसमप्रभः

cāruratnarathasthaśca nānālaṅkārabhūṣitaḥ navīnayauvanaśśrīmānkāmadevasamaprabhaḥ

"He was seated in a beautiful jeweled chariot, adorned with many ornaments, in the bloom of youth, resplendent, and radiant as the god of love himself."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.98.10)

दृष्ट्वा तां सुन्दरीं पद्मामुवाच स वृषो विभुः । विज्ञातुं भावमन्तःस्थं तस्याश्च मुनियोषितः

dṛṣṭvā tāṁ sundarīṁ padmāmuvāca sa vṛṣo vibhuḥ vijñātuṁ bhāvamantaḥsthaṁ tasyāśca muniyoṣitaḥ

"Seeing that beautiful Padma, that mighty lord in the form of a bull [Dharma] spoke to her, so as to discover the inner feeling of the sage's wife."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.98.11)

धर्म उवाच । अयि सुन्दरि लक्ष्मीर्वै राजयोग्ये मनोहरे । अतीव यौवनस्थे च कामिनि स्थिरयौवने

dharma uvāca ayi sundari lakṣmīrvai rājayogye manohare atīva yauvanasthe ca kāmini sthirayauvane

Dharma said: "O beautiful one, worthy of a king, charming as Lakshmi herself, in the very fullness of youth, O passionate one whose youth stands ever unfading --"

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.98.12)

जरातुरस्य वृद्धस्य पिप्पलादस्य वै मुनेः । सत्यं वदामि तन्वङ्गि समीपे नैव राजसे

jarāturasya vṛddhasya pippalādasya vai muneḥ satyaṁ vadāmi tanvaṅgi samīpe naiva rājase

"-- O slender one, I speak the truth: beside that decrepit old man, the sage Pippalada, worn down by age, you shine not at all."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.98.13)

विप्रं तपस्सु निरतं निर्घृणं मरणोन्मुखम् । त्यक्त्वा मां पश्य राजेन्द्रं रतिशूरं स्मरातुरम्

vipraṁ tapassu nirataṁ nirghṛṇaṁ maraṇonmukham tyaktvā māṁ paśya rājendraṁ ratiśūraṁ smarāturam

"Leave behind that brahmin, absorbed in penance alone, unfeeling, standing at the very brink of death, and look instead upon me -- a king of kings, a hero in love, consumed with desire for you."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.98.14)

प्राप्नोति सुन्दरी पुण्यात्सौन्दर्यं पूर्वजन्मनः । सफलं तद्भवेत्सर्वं रसिकालिङ्गनेन च

prāpnoti sundarī puṇyātsaundaryaṁ pūrvajanmanaḥ saphalaṁ tadbhavetsarvaṁ rasikāliṅganena ca

"A beautiful woman gains her beauty through the merit of a former birth; and all of it bears fruit only through the embrace of one who truly savors it."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.98.15)

सहस्रसुन्दरीकान्तं कामशास्त्रविशारदम् । किङ्करं कुरु मां कान्ते सम्परित्यज्य तं पतिम्

sahasrasundarīkāntaṁ kāmaśāstraviśāradam kiṅkaraṁ kuru māṁ kānte samparityajya taṁ patim

"Make me -- beloved of a thousand beauties, well versed in the science of love -- your very servant, O beloved one; abandon that husband of yours."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.98.16)

निर्जने कानने रम्ये शैले शैले नदीतटे । विहरस्व मया सार्धं जन्मेदं सफलं कुरु

nirjane kānane ramye śaile śaile nadītaṭe viharasva mayā sārdhaṁ janmedaṁ saphalaṁ kuru

"In lonely, lovely forests, on mountain after mountain, on the banks of rivers, sport with me, and make this birth of yours fruitful."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.98.17)

वसिष्ठ उवाच । इत्येवमुक्तवन्तं सा स्वरथादवरुह्य च । ग्रहीतुमुत्सुकं हस्ते तमुवाच पतिव्रता

vasiṣṭha uvāca ityevamuktavantaṁ sā svarathādavaruhya ca grahītumutsukaṁ haste tamuvāca pativratā

Vasishtha said: "To him who had spoken thus, who had climbed down from his chariot and stood eager to seize her by the hand, that chaste wife replied."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.98.18)

पद्मोवाच । गच्छ दूरं गच्छ दूरं पापिष्ठस्त्वं नराधिप । मां चेत्पश्यसि कामेन सद्यो नष्टो भविष्यसि

padmovāca gaccha dūraṁ gaccha dūraṁ pāpiṣṭhastvaṁ narādhipa māṁ cetpaśyasi kāmena sadyo naṣṭo bhaviṣyasi

Padma said: "Go far away, go far away, O sinful king! If you look upon me with desire, you shall be destroyed on the spot."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.98.19)

पिप्पलादं मुनिश्रेष्ठं तपसा पूतविग्रहम् । त्यक्त्वा कथं भजेयं त्वां स्त्रीजितं रतिलम्पटम्

pippalādaṁ muniśreṣṭhaṁ tapasā pūtavigraham tyaktvā kathaṁ bhajeyaṁ tvāṁ strījitaṁ ratilampaṭam

"How could I abandon Pippalada, the best of sages, his very body purified by austerity, and turn to you -- a man conquered by women, given over to lust?"

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.98.20)

स्त्रीजितस्पर्शमात्रेण सर्वं पुण्यं प्रणश्यति । स्त्रीजितः परपापी च तद्दर्शनमघावहम्

strījitasparśamātreṇa sarvaṁ puṇyaṁ praṇaśyati strījitaḥ parapāpī ca taddarśanamaghāvaham

"By the mere touch of a man conquered by women, all merit is destroyed; a man so conquered is a great sinner, and even the sight of him brings sin."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.98.21)

सत्क्रियो ह्यशुचिर्नित्यं स पुमान् यः स्त्रिया जितः । निन्दन्ति पितरो देवा मानवाः सकलाश्च तम्

satkriyo hyaśucirnityaṁ sa pumān yaḥ striyā jitaḥ nindanti pitaro devā mānavāḥ sakalāśca tam

"Even a man of good conduct, if he is conquered by a woman, remains forever impure; the ancestors, the gods, and all mankind alike condemn him."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.98.22)

तस्य किं ज्ञान सुतपोजपहोमप्रपूजनैः । विद्यया दानतः किं वा स्त्रीभिर्यस्य मनो हृतम्

tasya kiṁ jñāna sutapojapahomaprapūjanaiḥ vidyayā dānataḥ kiṁ vā strībhiryasya mano hṛtam

"Of what use to him is knowledge, fine austerity, japa, fire-offering, and worship? Of what use is learning or charity to one whose mind has been stolen away by women?"

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.98.23)

मातरं मां स्त्रियो भावं कृत्वा येन ब्रवीषि ह । भविष्यति क्षयस्तेन कालेन मम शापतः

mātaraṁ māṁ striyo bhāvaṁ kṛtvā yena bravīṣi ha bhaviṣyati kṣayastena kālena mama śāpataḥ

"Because you have spoken to me thus, though you should have regarded me, a woman, as a mother, by my curse you shall suffer decay with the passing of time."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.98.24)

वसिष्ठ उवाच । श्रुत्वा धर्मः सतीशापं नृपमूर्तिं विहाय च । धृत्वा स्वमूर्तिं देवेशः कम्पमान उवाच सः

vasiṣṭha uvāca śrutvā dharmaḥ satīśāpaṁ nṛpamūrtiṁ vihāya ca dhṛtvā svamūrtiṁ deveśaḥ kampamāna uvāca saḥ

Vasishtha said: "Hearing that chaste woman's curse, Dharma, abandoning his kingly form and assuming his own true shape, the lord among gods, trembling, spoke."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.98.25)

धर्म उवाच । मातर्जानीहि मां धर्मं ज्ञानिनां च गुरोर्गुरुम् । परस्त्रीमातृबुद्धिं च कुर्वन्तं सततं सति

dharma uvāca mātarjānīhi māṁ dharmaṁ jñānināṁ ca gurorgurum parastrīmātṛbuddhiṁ ca kurvantaṁ satataṁ sati

Dharma said: "O mother, know me to be Dharma, the guru even of the guru of the wise, who ever regards another man's wife with the understanding due to a mother, O chaste one."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.98.26)

अहं तवान्तरं ज्ञातुमागतस्तव सन्निधिम् । तवाहञ्च मनो जाने तथापि विधिनोदितः

ahaṁ tavāntaraṁ jñātumāgatastava sannidhim tavāhañca mano jāne tathāpi vidhinoditaḥ

"I came into your presence only to discover your inner heart; and though I already knew your mind, still I was driven to it by ordinance."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.98.27)

कृतं मे दमनं साध्वि न विरुद्धं यथोचितम् । शास्तिः समुत्पथस्थानामीश्वरेण विनिर्मिता

kṛtaṁ me damanaṁ sādhvi na viruddhaṁ yathocitam śāstiḥ samutpathasthānāmīśvareṇa vinirmitā

"O virtuous one, the punishment you have dealt me is not unjust, but altogether fitting; chastisement for those who stray from the path has been ordained by the Lord himself."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.98.28)

स्वयं प्रदाता सर्वेभ्यः सुखदुःखवरान्क्षमः । सम्पदं विपदं यो हि नमस्तस्मै शिवाय हि

svayaṁ pradātā sarvebhyaḥ sukhaduḥkhavarānkṣamaḥ sampadaṁ vipadaṁ yo hi namastasmai śivāya hi

"He himself is the giver to all, able to grant the boons of both joy and sorrow; to him who bestows both prosperity and calamity, to that Shiva, homage!"

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.98.29)

शत्रुं मित्रं संविधातुं प्रीतिञ्च कलहं क्षमः । स्रष्टुं नष्टुं च यस्सृष्टिं नमस्तस्मै शिवाय हि

śatruṁ mitraṁ saṁvidhātuṁ prītiñca kalahaṁ kṣamaḥ sraṣṭuṁ naṣṭuṁ ca yassṛṣṭiṁ namastasmai śivāya hi

"He who is capable of ordaining both foe and friend, both love and strife, who can both create and destroy the universe -- to that Shiva, homage!"

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.98.30)

येन शुक्लीकृतं क्षीरं जले शैत्यं कृतं पुरा । दाहीकृतो हुताशश्च नमस्तस्मै शिवाय हि

yena śuklīkṛtaṁ kṣīraṁ jale śaityaṁ kṛtaṁ purā dāhīkṛto hutāśaśca namastasmai śivāya hi

"By whom, in ancient times, milk was made white, coldness was set into water, and fire was made to burn -- to that Shiva, homage!"

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.98.31)

प्रकृतिर्निर्मिता येन तत्त्वानि महदादितः । ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशाद्या नमस्तस्मै शिवाय हि

prakṛtirnirmitā yena tattvāni mahadāditaḥ brahmaviṣṇumaheśādyā namastasmai śivāya hi

"By whom Prakriti was fashioned, and the principles beginning with Mahat, and Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesha, and all the rest -- to that Shiva, homage!"

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.98.32)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा पुरतस्तस्यास्तस्थौ धर्मो जगद्गुरुः । किञ्चिन्नोवाच चकितस्तत्पातिव्रत्यतोषितः

brahmovāca ityuktvā puratastasyāstasthau dharmo jagadguruḥ kiñcinnovāca cakitastatpātivratyatoṣitaḥ

Brahma said: "Having spoken thus, Dharma, guru of the world, stood before her; astonished, and gladdened by her chastity, he said nothing further."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.98.33)

पद्मापि नृपकन्या सा पिप्पलादप्रिया तदा । साध्वी तं धर्ममाज्ञाय विस्मितोवाच पर्वत

padmāpi nṛpakanyā sā pippalādapriyā tadā sādhvī taṁ dharmamājñāya vismitovāca parvata

"O mountain, then Padma too, that king's daughter, beloved wife of Pippalada, that chaste woman, recognizing him to be Dharma, spoke in astonishment."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.98.34)

पद्मोवाच । त्वमेव धर्म सर्वेषां साक्षी निखिलकर्मणाम् । कथं मनो मे विज्ञातुं विडम्बयसि मां विभो

padmovāca tvameva dharma sarveṣāṁ sākṣī nikhilakarmaṇām kathaṁ mano me vijñātuṁ viḍambayasi māṁ vibho

Padma said: "You alone, O Dharma, are the witness of the deeds of all beings; O mighty lord, why did you mock and deceive me only to learn my mind?"

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.98.35)

यत्तत्सर्वं कृतं ब्रह्मन् नापराधो बभूव मे । त्वं च शप्तो मयाज्ञानात्स्त्रीस्वभावाद् वृथा वृष

yattatsarvaṁ kṛtaṁ brahman nāparādho babhūva me tvaṁ ca śapto mayājñānātstrīsvabhāvād vṛthā vṛṣa

"O holy one, whatever I did was no fault of mine; and you, O bull-formed lord, I have cursed in vain, out of ignorance and out of a woman's very nature."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.98.36)

का व्यवस्था भवेत्तस्य चिन्तयामीति साम्प्रतम् । चित्ते स्फुरतु सा बुद्धिर्यया शं संल्लभामि वै

kā vyavasthā bhavettasya cintayāmīti sāmpratam citte sphuratu sā buddhiryayā śaṁ saṁllabhāmi vai

"I am now pondering what remedy there might be for this; may that understanding dawn in my mind by which I may indeed find peace."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.98.37)

आकाशोऽसौ दिशःसर्वा यदि नश्यन्तु वायवः । तथापि साध्वीशापस्तु न नश्यति कदाचन

ākāśo'sau diśaḥsarvā yadi naśyantu vāyavaḥ tathāpi sādhvīśāpastu na naśyati kadācana

"Even should the sky, all the directions, and the very winds perish, still the curse of a chaste woman never comes to nothing."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.98.38)

सत्ये पूर्णश्चतुष्पादः पौर्णमास्यां यथा शशी । विराजसे देवराज सर्वकालं दिवानिशम्

satye pūrṇaścatuṣpādaḥ paurṇamāsyāṁ yathā śaśī virājase devarāja sarvakālaṁ divāniśam

"In the Satya Yuga you shine, full and four-footed, like the moon on the night of the full moon, O lord among gods, at every time, day and night."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.98.39)

त्वं च नष्टो भवसि चेत्सृष्टिनाशो भवेत्तदा । इतिकर्तव्यतामूढा वृथापि च वदाम्यहम्

tvaṁ ca naṣṭo bhavasi cetsṛṣṭināśo bhavettadā itikartavyatāmūḍhā vṛthāpi ca vadāmyaham

"And should you yourself be destroyed, creation itself would then perish; bewildered as to what is proper to be done, I speak thus, even though it may be to no avail."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.98.40)

पादक्षयश्च भविता त्रेतायां च सुरोत्तम । पादोऽपरे द्वापरे च तृतीयोऽपि कलौ विभो

pādakṣayaśca bhavitā tretāyāṁ ca surottama pādo'pare dvāpare ca tṛtīyo'pi kalau vibho

"O best of gods, in the Treta Yuga one foot of yours shall diminish; another in the Dvapara; and, O mighty one, the third as well in the Kali Yuga."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.98.41)

कलिशेषेऽखिलाश्छिन्ना भविष्यन्ति तवाङ्घ्रयः । पुनःसत्ये समायाते परिपूर्णो भविष्यसि

kaliśeṣe'khilāśchinnā bhaviṣyanti tavāṅghrayaḥ punaḥsatye samāyāte paripūrṇo bhaviṣyasi

"By the end of the Kali Yuga, all your feet shall be cut away; but when the Satya Yuga returns once more, you shall become whole again."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.98.42)

सत्ये सर्वव्यापकस्त्वं तदन्येषु च कुत्रचित् । युगव्यवस्थया स त्वं भविष्यसि यथा तथा

satye sarvavyāpakastvaṁ tadanyeṣu ca kutracit yugavyavasthayā sa tvaṁ bhaviṣyasi yathā tathā

"In the Satya Yuga you are all-pervading; in the other ages, only in some partial measure -- thus, by the ordinance of the ages, so indeed shall you be."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.98.43)

इत्येवं वचनं सत्यं ममास्तु सुखदं तव । याम्यहं पतिसेवायै गच्छ त्वं स्वगृहं विभो

ityevaṁ vacanaṁ satyaṁ mamāstu sukhadaṁ tava yāmyahaṁ patisevāyai gaccha tvaṁ svagṛhaṁ vibho

"Thus let this word of mine prove true, and bring you happiness. I now go to serve my husband; go you, O mighty one, to your own abode."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.98.44)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्याः सन्तुष्टोऽभूद् वृषः स वै । तदेवंवादिनीं साध्वीमुवाच विधिनन्दन

brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacastasyāḥ santuṣṭo'bhūd vṛṣaḥ sa vai tadevaṁvādinīṁ sādhvīmuvāca vidhinandana

Brahma said: "O son of the Ordainer, hearing her words, that bull-formed Dharma became well pleased indeed, and spoke to that chaste woman who had said all this."

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.98.45)

धर्म उवाच । धन्यासि पतिभक्तासि स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु पतिव्रते । वरं गृहाण त्वत्स्वामी त्वत्परित्राणकारणात्

dharma uvāca dhanyāsi patibhaktāsi svasti te'stu pativrate varaṁ gṛhāṇa tvatsvāmī tvatparitrāṇakāraṇāt

Dharma said: "Blessed are you, devoted to your husband; may well-being be yours, O chaste wife. Accept this boon: for your protection, your husband --"

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.98.46)

युवा भवतु ते भर्ता रतिशूरश्च धार्मिकः । रूपवान् गुणवान्वाग्मी सन्ततस्थिरयौवनः

yuvā bhavatu te bhartā ratiśūraśca dhārmikaḥ rūpavān guṇavānvāgmī santatasthirayauvanaḥ

"-- let your husband become young, valiant in love, and righteous; handsome, virtuous, eloquent, and of ever-unfading youth."

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.98.47)

चिरञ्जीवी स भवतु मार्कण्डेयात्परश्शुभे । कुबेराद्धनवांश्चैव शक्रादैश्वर्यवानपि

cirañjīvī sa bhavatu mārkaṇḍeyātparaśśubhe kuberāddhanavāṁścaiva śakrādaiśvaryavānapi

"O blessed one, let him be long-lived beyond even Markandeya, wealthier than Kubera, and possessed of even greater majesty than Indra."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.98.48)

शिवभक्तो हरिसमस्सिद्धस्तु कपिलात्परः । बुद्ध्या बृहस्पतिसमः समत्वेन विधेः समः

śivabhakto harisamassiddhastu kapilātparaḥ buddhyā bṛhaspatisamaḥ samatvena vidheḥ samaḥ

"A devotee of Shiva, equal to Hari, accomplished beyond even Kapila; equal to Brihaspati in wisdom, and equal to Brahma in equanimity."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.98.49)

स्वामिसौभाग्यसंयुक्ता भव त्वं जीवनावधि । तथा च सुभगे देवि त्वं भव स्थिरयौवना

svāmisaubhāgyasaṁyuktā bhava tvaṁ jīvanāvadhi tathā ca subhage devi tvaṁ bhava sthirayauvanā

"May you remain endowed with your husband's good fortune to the very end of your life; and, O fortunate one, O goddess-like woman, may you too become of ever-unfading youth."

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.98.50)

माता त्वं दशपुत्राणां गुणिनां चिरजीविनाम् । स्वभर्तुरधिकानां च भविष्यसि न संशयः

mātā tvaṁ daśaputrāṇāṁ guṇināṁ cirajīvinām svabharturadhikānāṁ ca bhaviṣyasi na saṁśayaḥ

"Without doubt you shall become the mother of ten virtuous, long-lived sons, who shall surpass even their own father."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.98.51)

गृहा भवन्तु ते साध्वि सर्वसम्पत्समन्विताः । प्रकाशवन्तः सततं कुबेरभवनाधिकाः

gṛhā bhavantu te sādhvi sarvasampatsamanvitāḥ prakāśavantaḥ satataṁ kuberabhavanādhikāḥ

"O virtuous one, may your dwellings be endowed with every prosperity, ever radiant, and surpassing even the mansion of Kubera."

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.98.52)

वसिष्ठ उवाच । इत्येवमुक्त्वा सन्तस्थौ धर्मः स गिरिसत्तम । सा तं प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य प्रणम्य स्वगृहं ययौ

vasiṣṭha uvāca ityevamuktvā santasthau dharmaḥ sa girisattama sā taṁ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya praṇamya svagṛhaṁ yayau

Vasishtha said: "O best of mountains, having spoken thus, Dharma fell silent; and she, circling him in reverence and bowing to him, went to her own home."

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.98.53)

धर्मस्तथाशिषो दत्त्वा जगाम निजमन्दिरम् । प्रशशंस च तां प्रीत्या पद्मां संसदि संसदि

dharmastathāśiṣo dattvā jagāma nijamandiram praśaśaṁsa ca tāṁ prītyā padmāṁ saṁsadi saṁsadi

"Dharma too, having given his blessings, departed to his own abode; and he praised Padma with affection, in gathering after gathering."

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.98.54)

सा रेमे स्वामिना सार्धं यूना रहसि सन्ततम् । पश्चाद्बभूवुः सत्पुत्रास्तद्भर्तुरधिका गुणैः

sā reme svāminā sārdhaṁ yūnā rahasi santatam paścādbabhūvuḥ satputrāstadbharturadhikā guṇaiḥ

"She then took her delight continually, in private, with her now-youthful husband; and afterward good sons were born to them, surpassing their father in virtues."

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.98.55)

बभूव सकला सम्पद्दम्पत्योः सुखवर्धिनी । सर्वानन्दवृद्धिकरी परत्रेह च शर्मणे

babhūva sakalā sampaddampatyoḥ sukhavardhinī sarvānandavṛddhikarī paratreha ca śarmaṇe

"Every kind of prosperity that increases happiness came to that couple, bringing the growth of all joy, for their well-being both in this world and the next."

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.98.56)

शैलेन्द्र कथितं सर्वमितिहासं पुरातनम् । दम्पत्योश्च तयोः प्रीत्या श्रुतं ते परमादरात्

śailendra kathitaṁ sarvamitihāsaṁ purātanam dampatyośca tayoḥ prītyā śrutaṁ te paramādarāt

"O lord of the mountains, this whole ancient history of that couple has been told to you with affection, and you have heard it with the greatest reverence."

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.98.57)

बुद्ध्वा तत्त्वं सुतां देहि पार्वतीमीश्वराय च । कुरुषं त्यज शैलेन्द्र मेनया स्वस्त्रिया सह

buddhvā tattvaṁ sutāṁ dehi pārvatīmīśvarāya ca kuruṣaṁ tyaja śailendra menayā svastriyā saha

"Now, understanding this truth, give your daughter Parvati to Ishvara. O lord of the mountains, together with your own wife Mena, give up your obstinacy."

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.98.58)

सप्ताहे समतीते तु दुर्लभेऽतिशुभे क्षणे । लग्नाधिपे च लग्नस्थे चन्द्रे स्वत्नयान्विते

saptāhe samatīte tu durlabhe'tiśubhe kṣaṇe lagnādhipe ca lagnasthe candre svatnayānvite

"When a week has passed, in that rare and most auspicious moment, when the lord of the ascendant stands within the ascendant, and the moon is joined with its own favorable place --"

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.98.59)

मुदिते रोहिणीयुक्ते विशुद्धे चन्द्रतारके । मार्गमासे चन्द्रवारे सर्वदोषविवर्जिते

mudite rohiṇīyukte viśuddhe candratārake mārgamāse candravāre sarvadoṣavivarjite

"-- joyful, in conjunction with the Rohini asterism, the moon and stars wholly unblemished, in the month of Margashirsha, upon a Monday, free from every flaw --"

Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.98.60)

सर्वसद्ग्रहसंसृष्टेऽसद्ग्रहदृष्टिवर्जिते । सदपत्यप्रदे जीवे पतिसौभाग्यदायिनि

sarvasadgrahasaṁsṛṣṭe'sadgrahadṛṣṭivarjite sadapatyaprade jīve patisaubhāgyadāyini

"-- attended by all favorable planets, untouched by the gaze of any malefic one, with Jupiter granting good progeny and bestowing good fortune upon the husband --"

Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.98.61)

जगदम्बां जगत्पित्रे मूलप्रकृतिमीश्वरीम् । कन्यां प्रदाय गिरिजां कृती त्वं भव पर्वत

jagadambāṁ jagatpitre mūlaprakṛtimīśvarīm kanyāṁ pradāya girijāṁ kṛtī tvaṁ bhava parvata

"-- O mountain, by giving your daughter Girija -- Mother of the universe, the primordial Prakriti, the sovereign Goddess -- to the Father of the universe, become blessed and fulfilled."

Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.98.62)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा मुनिशार्दूलो वसिष्ठो ज्ञानिसत्तमः । विरराम शिवं स्मृत्वा नानालीलाकरं प्रभुम्

brahmovāca ityuktvā muniśārdūlo vasiṣṭho jñānisattamaḥ virarāma śivaṁ smṛtvā nānālīlākaraṁ prabhum

Brahma said: "Having spoken thus, Vasishtha, tiger among sages, foremost among the wise, fell silent, calling to mind Lord Shiva, the worker of manifold divine sports."
