Himalaya's Resolve to Give Kali to Shiva

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.99.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । वसिष्ठस्य वचः श्रुत्वा सगणोऽपि हिमालयः । विस्मितो भार्यया शैलानुवाच स गिरीश्वरः

brahmovāca vasiṣṭhasya vacaḥ śrutvā sagaṇo'pi himālayaḥ vismito bhāryayā śailānuvāca sa girīśvaraḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing Vasishtha's words, Himalaya, together with his retinue, filled with wonder, along with his wife, that lord of mountains addressed the [other] mountains."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.99.2)

हिमालय उवाच । हे मेरो गिरिराट् सह्य गन्धमादन मन्दर । मैनाक विन्ध्य शैलेन्द्राः सर्वे शृणुत मद्वचः

himālaya uvāca he mero girirāṭ sahya gandhamādana mandara maināka vindhya śailendrāḥ sarve śṛṇuta madvacaḥ

Himalaya said: "O Meru, king of mountains, O Sahya, Gandhamadana, Mandara, Mainaka, Vindhya, all you lords of mountains, hear my words."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.99.3)

वसिष्ठो हि वदत्येवं किं मे कार्यं विचार्यते । यथा तथा च शंसध्वं निर्णीय मनसाखिलम्

vasiṣṭho hi vadatyevaṁ kiṁ me kāryaṁ vicāryate yathā tathā ca śaṁsadhvaṁ nirṇīya manasākhilam

"Vasishtha speaks thus to me; what then ought I to do? Deliberate fully in your own minds, and tell me, whatever your decision may be."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.99.4)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तच्छुत्वा वचनं तस्य सुमेरुप्रमुखाश्च ते । प्रोचुर्हिमालयं प्रीत्या सुनिर्णीय महीधराः

brahmovāca tacchutvā vacanaṁ tasya sumerupramukhāśca te procurhimālayaṁ prītyā sunirṇīya mahīdharāḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing his words, those mountains headed by Sumeru, having deliberated well among themselves, spoke to Himalaya with affection."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.99.5)

शैला ऊचुः । अधुना किं विमर्शेन कृतं कार्यं तथैव हि । उत्पन्नेयं महाभाग देवकार्यार्थमेव हि

śailā ūcuḥ adhunā kiṁ vimarśena kṛtaṁ kāryaṁ tathaiva hi utpanneyaṁ mahābhāga devakāryārthameva hi

The mountains said: "What need is there now for further deliberation? The matter, indeed, is already settled. O greatly fortunate one, she was born for the very sake of the work of the gods."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.99.6)

प्रदातव्या शिवायेति शिवस्यार्थेऽवतारिणी । अनयाराधितो रुद्रो रुद्रेण यदि भाषिता

pradātavyā śivāyeti śivasyārthe'vatāriṇī anayārādhito rudro rudreṇa yadi bhāṣitā

"She must be given to Shiva alone -- she who has descended into being for Shiva's own purpose. By her, Rudra has already been propitiated; and by Rudra, she has already been given his word."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.99.7)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तेषां मेर्वादीनां हिमाचलः । सुप्रसन्नतरोऽभूद् वै जहास गिरिजा हृदि

brahmovāca etacchrutvā vacasteṣāṁ mervādīnāṁ himācalaḥ suprasannataro'bhūd vai jahāsa girijā hṛdi

Brahma said: "Hearing these words of Meru and the other mountains, Himachala became exceedingly pleased indeed; and Girija smiled within her own heart."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.99.8)

अरुन्धती च तां मेनां बोधयामास कारणात् । नानावाक्यसमूहेनेतिहासैर्विविधैरपि

arundhatī ca tāṁ menāṁ bodhayāmāsa kāraṇāt nānāvākyasamūhenetihāsairvividhairapi

"And Arundhati, to this very end, instructed Mena with a multitude of various words, and with manifold ancient tales as well."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.99.9)

अथ सा मेनका शैलपत्नी बुद्ध्वा प्रसन्नधीः । मुनीनरुन्धतीं शैलं भोजयित्वा बुभोज च

atha sā menakā śailapatnī buddhvā prasannadhīḥ munīnarundhatīṁ śailaṁ bhojayitvā bubhoja ca

"Then Menaka, the mountain's wife, understanding all this, her mind now pleased, having first fed the sages, Arundhati, and the mountain, herself partook of food as well."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.99.10)

अथ शैलवरो ज्ञानी सुसंसेव्य मुनींश्च तान् । उवाच साञ्जलिः प्रीत्या प्रसन्नात्मा गतभ्रमः

atha śailavaro jñānī susaṁsevya munīṁśca tān uvāca sāñjaliḥ prītyā prasannātmā gatabhramaḥ

"Then that wise lord of mountains, having duly attended upon those sages, spoke with joined hands and with affection, his mind now content and free from confusion."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.99.11)

हिमाचल उवाच । सप्तर्षयो महाभागा वचः शृणुत मामकम् । विस्मयो मे गतः सर्वः शिवयोश्चरितं श्रुतम्

himācala uvāca saptarṣayo mahābhāgā vacaḥ śṛṇuta māmakam vismayo me gataḥ sarvaḥ śivayoścaritaṁ śrutam

Himachala said: "O greatly blessed seven sages, hear my words. All my bewilderment has now passed away; I have heard the story of Shiva and Shiva [the divine pair]."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.99.12)

मदीयं च शरीरं वै पत्नी मेना सुता सुताः । ऋद्धिः सिद्धिश्च चान्यद्वै शिवस्यैव न चान्यथा

madīyaṁ ca śarīraṁ vai patnī menā sutā sutāḥ ṛddhiḥ siddhiśca cānyadvai śivasyaiva na cānyathā

"My own body, my wife Mena, my daughter, my sons, my prosperity and my success, and whatever else is mine -- all of it belongs to Shiva alone, and to none other."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.99.13)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा स तदा पुत्रीं दृष्ट्वा तत्सादरं च ताम् । भूषयित्वा तदङ्गानि ऋष्युत्सङ्गे न्यवेशयत्

brahmovāca ityuktvā sa tadā putrīṁ dṛṣṭvā tatsādaraṁ ca tām bhūṣayitvā tadaṅgāni ṛṣyutsaṅge nyaveśayat

Brahma said: "Having said this, he then looked upon his daughter with reverence, adorned her limbs with ornaments, and set her down in the sage's lap."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.99.14)

उवाच च पुनः प्रीत्या शैलराज ऋषींस्तदा । अयं भागो मया तस्मै दातव्य इति निश्चितम्

uvāca ca punaḥ prītyā śailarāja ṛṣīṁstadā ayaṁ bhāgo mayā tasmai dātavya iti niścitam

"And then the king of mountains spoke again with affection to the sages: 'This portion of mine must indeed be given to Him -- this I have firmly resolved.'"

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.99.15)

ऋषय ऊचुः । शङ्करो भिक्षुकस्तेऽथ स्वयं दाता भवान् गिरे । भैक्ष्यञ्च पार्वती देवी किमतः परमुत्तमम्

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ śaṅkaro bhikṣukaste'tha svayaṁ dātā bhavān gire bhaikṣyañca pārvatī devī kimataḥ paramuttamam

The sages said: "O mountain, Shankara is your mendicant, and you yourself are the giver; and the very alms given is the goddess Parvati -- what could be more excellent than this?"

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.99.16)

हिमवन् शिखराणान्ते यद्धेतोः सदृशी गतिः । धन्यस्त्वं सर्वशैलानामधिपः सर्वतो वरः

himavan śikharāṇānte yaddhetoḥ sadṛśī gatiḥ dhanyastvaṁ sarvaśailānāmadhipaḥ sarvato varaḥ

"O Himavan, this is the reason your destiny, among all your peaks, has proven so fitting; you are blessed, lord of all the mountains, and the finest in every way."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.99.17)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एवमुक्त्वा तु कन्यायै मुनयो विमलाशयाः । आशिषं दत्तवन्तस्ते शिवाय सुखदा भव

brahmovāca evamuktvā tu kanyāyai munayo vimalāśayāḥ āśiṣaṁ dattavantaste śivāya sukhadā bhava

Brahma said: "Having spoken thus, those pure-hearted sages gave the maiden their blessing: 'May you become a bringer of happiness to Shiva.'"

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.99.18)

स्पृष्ट्वा करेण तां तत्र कल्याणं ते भविष्यति । शुक्लपक्षे यथा चन्द्रो वर्धन्तां त्वद्गुणास्तथा

spṛṣṭvā kareṇa tāṁ tatra kalyāṇaṁ te bhaviṣyati śuklapakṣe yathā candro vardhantāṁ tvadguṇāstathā

"Touching her there with their hands, they said: 'Your welfare shall come to pass; just as the moon waxes through the bright fortnight, so may your virtues increase.'"

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.99.19)

इत्युक्त्वा मुनयः सर्वे दत्त्वा ते गिरये मुदा । पुष्पाणि फलयुक्तानि प्रत्ययं चक्रिरे तदा

ityuktvā munayaḥ sarve dattvā te giraye mudā puṣpāṇi phalayuktāni pratyayaṁ cakrire tadā

"Having said this, all the sages, joyfully giving the mountain flowers together with fruits, then made this the token of their solemn pledge."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.99.20)

अरुन्धती तदा तत्र मेनां सा सुमुखी मुदा । गुणैश्च लोभयामास शिवस्य परमा सती

arundhatī tadā tatra menāṁ sā sumukhī mudā guṇaiśca lobhayāmāsa śivasya paramā satī

"Then Arundhati, the fair-faced one, that supreme and chaste lady, there joyfully won over Mena with an account of Shiva's virtues."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.99.21)

हरिद्राकुङ्कुमैः शैलश्मश्रूणि प्रत्यमार्जयत् । लौकिकाचारमाधाय मङ्गलायनमुत्तमम्

haridrākuṅkumaiḥ śailaśmaśrūṇi pratyamārjayat laukikācāramādhāya maṅgalāyanamuttamam

"With turmeric and kumkum she anointed the mountain's beard, observing the worldly custom, in this most excellent rite of good fortune."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.99.22)

ततश्च ते चतुर्थेऽह्नि सन्धार्य लग्नमुत्तमम् । परस्परं च सन्तुष्य सञ्जग्मुः शिवसन्निधिम्

tataśca te caturthe'hni sandhārya lagnamuttamam parasparaṁ ca santuṣya sañjagmuḥ śivasannidhim

"Then, on the fourth day, having fixed upon the most excellent auspicious hour, and satisfied with one another, they all went together into Shiva's presence."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.99.23)

तत्र गत्वा शिवं नत्वा स्तुत्वा विविधसूक्तिभिः । ऊचुः सर्वे वसिष्ठाद्या मुनयः परमेश्वरम्

tatra gatvā śivaṁ natvā stutvā vividhasūktibhiḥ ūcuḥ sarve vasiṣṭhādyā munayaḥ parameśvaram

"Going there, bowing to Shiva, and praising him with various hymns of praise, all the sages beginning with Vasishtha addressed the Supreme Lord."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.99.24)

ऋषय ऊचुः । देवदेव महादेव परमेश महाप्रभो । शृण्वस्मद्वचनं प्रीत्या यत्कृतं सेवकैस्तव

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ devadeva mahādeva parameśa mahāprabho śṛṇvasmadvacanaṁ prītyā yatkṛtaṁ sevakaistava

The sages said: "O god of gods, Mahadeva, Supreme Lord, great master, hear with favor our words -- what has been accomplished by these your servants."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.99.25)

बोधितो गिरिराजश्च मेना विविधसूक्तिभिः । सेतिहासं महेशान प्रबुद्धोऽसौ न संशयः

bodhito girirājaśca menā vividhasūktibhiḥ setihāsaṁ maheśāna prabuddho'sau na saṁśayaḥ

"The king of mountains, and Mena as well, have been instructed with various sayings; and, together with the ancient tale, O Mahesha, he has now become fully enlightened -- of this there is no doubt."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.99.26)

वाक्यदत्ता गिरीन्द्रेण पार्वती ते हि नान्यथा । उद्वाहाय प्रगच्छ त्वं गणैर्देवैश्च संयुतः

vākyadattā girīndreṇa pārvatī te hi nānyathā udvāhāya pragaccha tvaṁ gaṇairdevaiśca saṁyutaḥ

"Parvati has been pledged in word by the king of mountains to you, and to none other. Now set forth for the marriage, accompanied by your ganas and the gods."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.99.27)

गच्छ शीघ्रं महादेव हिमाचलगृहं प्रभो । विवाहय यथा रीतिः पार्वतीमात्मजन्मने

gaccha śīghraṁ mahādeva himācalagṛhaṁ prabho vivāhaya yathā rītiḥ pārvatīmātmajanmane

"Go swiftly, O Mahadeva, O Lord, to the house of Himachala; marry Parvati, according to due custom, for your own divine purpose."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.99.28)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तेषां लौकिकाचारतत्परः । प्रहृष्टात्मा महेशानः प्रहस्येदमुवाच सः

brahmovāca tacchrutvā vacanaṁ teṣāṁ laukikācāratatparaḥ prahṛṣṭātmā maheśānaḥ prahasyedamuvāca saḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing their words, Mahesha, intent on following worldly custom, his heart delighted, spoke thus with a smile."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.99.29)

महेश उवाच । विवाहो हि महाभागा न दृष्टो न श्रुतो मया । यथा पुरा भवद्भिस्तद्विधिः प्रोच्यो विशेषतः

maheśa uvāca vivāho hi mahābhāgā na dṛṣṭo na śruto mayā yathā purā bhavadbhistadvidhiḥ procyo viśeṣataḥ

Mahesha said: "O greatly blessed ones, I have never before seen nor heard of a marriage. Let that rite, just as it was performed by you in ancient times, be explained to me in particular."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.99.30)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तदाकर्ण्य महेशस्य लौकिकं वचनं शुभम् । प्रत्यूचुः प्रहसन्तस्ते देवदेवं सदाशिवम्

brahmovāca tadākarṇya maheśasya laukikaṁ vacanaṁ śubham pratyūcuḥ prahasantaste devadevaṁ sadāśivam

Brahma said: "Hearing this auspicious, worldly-wise word of Mahesha, they, smiling, replied to that god of gods, Sadashiva."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.99.31)

ऋषय ऊचुः । विष्णुमाहूय वै शीघ्रं ससमाजं विशेषतः । ब्रह्माणं ससुतं प्रीत्या तथा देवं शतक्रतुम्

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ viṣṇumāhūya vai śīghraṁ sasamājaṁ viśeṣataḥ brahmāṇaṁ sasutaṁ prītyā tathā devaṁ śatakratum

The sages said: "Quickly summon Vishnu, together with his whole assembly, in particular; and Brahma with his sons, with affection; and likewise Indra, the god of a hundred sacrifices."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.99.32)

तथा ऋषिगणान्सर्वान् यक्षगन्धर्वकिन्नरान् । सिद्धान् विद्याधरांश्चैव तथा चैवाप्सरोगणान्

tathā ṛṣigaṇānsarvān yakṣagandharvakinnarān siddhān vidyādharāṁścaiva tathā caivāpsarogaṇān

"Likewise all the assembled sages, the Yakshas, Gandharvas, and Kinnaras; the Siddhas and Vidyadharas as well, and the hosts of Apsaras too."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.99.33)

एतांश्चान्यान्प्रभो सर्वानानयस्वेह सादरम् । सर्वं संसाधयिष्यन्ति त्वत्कार्यं ते न संशयः

etāṁścānyānprabho sarvānānayasveha sādaram sarvaṁ saṁsādhayiṣyanti tvatkāryaṁ te na saṁśayaḥ

"O Lord, bring all of these and all others here with due honor. They will all, without doubt, accomplish your task."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.99.34)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा सप्त ऋषयस्तदाज्ञां प्राप्य ते मुदा । स्वधाम प्रययुः सर्वे शंसन्तः शङ्करीं गतिम्

brahmovāca ityuktvā sapta ṛṣayastadājñāṁ prāpya te mudā svadhāma prayayuḥ sarve śaṁsantaḥ śaṅkarīṁ gatim

Brahma said: "Having spoken thus, the seven sages, receiving his command, all went joyfully to their own abodes, praising the way of Shankari."
