Gathering the Materials for Parvati's Wedding
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.100.1)
नारद उवाच । तात प्राज्ञ वदेदानीं सप्तर्षिषु गतेषु च । किमकार्षीद्धिमगिरिस्तन्मे कृत्वा कृपां प्रभो
nārada uvāca tāta prājña vadedānīṁ saptarṣiṣu gateṣu ca kimakārṣīddhimagiristanme kṛtvā kṛpāṁ prabho
Narada said: "O wise father, tell me now: when the seven sages had departed, what did Himagiri do? O Lord, out of your kindness, tell me this."
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.100.2)
ब्रह्मोवाच । गतेषु तेषु मुनिषु सप्तस्वपि मुनीश्वर । सारुन्धतीषु हिमवान् यदकार्षीद् ब्रवीमि ते
brahmovāca gateṣu teṣu muniṣu saptasvapi munīśvara sārundhatīṣu himavān yadakārṣīd bravīmi te
Brahma said: "O lord of sages, when those seven sages, together with Arundhati, had departed, I shall tell you what Himavan then did."
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.100.3)
तत आमन्त्र्य स्वभ्रातॄन् मेर्वादीन् ससुतप्रियः । महामनाः स मुमुदे हिमवान् पर्वतेश्वरः
tata āmantrya svabhrātṝn mervādīn sasutapriyaḥ mahāmanāḥ sa mumude himavān parvateśvaraḥ
"Then, having invited his own brother mountains, headed by Meru, together with their beloved sons, Himavan, lord of mountains, great of soul, rejoiced."
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.100.4)
तदाज्ञप्तस्ततः प्रीत्या हिमवान् लग्नपत्रिकाम् । लेखयामास सुप्रीत्या गर्गेण स्वपुरोधसा
tadājñaptastataḥ prītyā himavān lagnapatrikām lekhayāmāsa suprītyā gargeṇa svapurodhasā
"Then, thus directed, Himavan, with affection, had the invitation letter of the wedding-date written with great care by Garga, his own family priest."
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.100.5)
अथ प्रस्थापयामास तां शिवाय स पत्रिकाम् । नानाविधास्तु सामग्र्यः स्वजनैर्मुदितात्मभिः
atha prasthāpayāmāsa tāṁ śivāya sa patrikām nānāvidhāstu sāmagryaḥ svajanairmuditātmabhiḥ
"Then he sent that letter to Shiva, together with manifold gifts, by the hands of his own joyful-hearted kinsmen."
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.100.6)
ते जनास्तत्र गत्वा च कैलासे शिवसन्निधिम् । ददुः शिवाय तत्पत्रं तिलकं संविधाय च
te janāstatra gatvā ca kailāse śivasannidhim daduḥ śivāya tatpatraṁ tilakaṁ saṁvidhāya ca
"Those people, going there to Kailasa, into Shiva's presence, gave that letter to Shiva, having duly applied the tilaka."
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.100.7)
सम्मानिता विशेषेण प्रभुणा च यथोचितम् । सर्वे ते प्रीतिमनस आजग्मुः शैलसन्निधिम्
sammānitā viśeṣeṇa prabhuṇā ca yathocitam sarve te prītimanasa ājagmuḥ śailasannidhim
"Honored in particular by the Lord, just as was fitting, all of them, their hearts filled with joy, returned to the mountain's presence."
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.100.8)
सम्मानितान्विशेषेण महेशेनागतान् जनान् । दृष्ट्वा सुहर्षितान् शैलो मुमोदातीव चेतसि
sammānitānviśeṣeṇa maheśenāgatān janān dṛṣṭvā suharṣitān śailo mumodātīva cetasi
"Seeing those people, who had returned specially honored by Mahesha, filled with delight, the mountain rejoiced exceedingly in his heart."
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.100.9)
ततो निमन्त्रणं चक्रे स्वबन्धूनां प्रमोदितः । नानादेशस्थितानां च निखिलानां सुखास्पदम्
tato nimantraṇaṁ cakre svabandhūnāṁ pramoditaḥ nānādeśasthitānāṁ ca nikhilānāṁ sukhāspadam
"Then, greatly delighted, he sent invitations to all his kinsmen dwelling in various lands -- he who was a source of happiness to them all."
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.100.10)
ततः स कारयामास स्वन्नसङ्ग्रहमादरात् । नानाविधाश्च सामग्रीर्विवाहकरणोचिताः
tataḥ sa kārayāmāsa svannasaṅgrahamādarāt nānāvidhāśca sāmagrīrvivāhakaraṇocitāḥ
"Then he had respectfully gathered a great store of fine food, and manifold materials befitting the performance of the wedding."
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.100.11)
तण्डुलानां बहून् शैलान् पृथुकानां तथैव च । गुडानां शर्कराणां च लवणानां तथैव च
taṇḍulānāṁ bahūn śailān pṛthukānāṁ tathaiva ca guḍānāṁ śarkarāṇāṁ ca lavaṇānāṁ tathaiva ca
"Mountains upon mountains of rice, and likewise of flattened rice; of jaggery and of sugar, and likewise of salt."
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.100.12)
क्षीराणां च घृतानां च दध्नां वापीश्चकार सः । यवादिधान्यपिष्टानां लड्डुकानां तथैव च
kṣīrāṇāṁ ca ghṛtānāṁ ca dadhnāṁ vāpīścakāra saḥ yavādidhānyapiṣṭānāṁ laḍḍukānāṁ tathaiva ca
"He had made great reservoirs of milk, of ghee, and of curd; and likewise of the flours of barley and other grains, and of sweet laddus."
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.100.13)
शष्कुलीनां स्वस्तिकानां शर्कराणां तथैव च । अमृतेक्षुरसानां च तत्र वापीश्चकार सः
śaṣkulīnāṁ svastikānāṁ śarkarāṇāṁ tathaiva ca amṛtekṣurasānāṁ ca tatra vāpīścakāra saḥ
"And there he had made reservoirs of shashkuli sweets, of svastika-shaped sweets, and likewise of sugar; and of sugarcane juice sweet as nectar."
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.100.14)
बह्वीर्हैयङ्गवानां च ह्यासवानां तथैव च । नाना पक्वान्नसङ्घांश्च महास्वादुरसाँस्तथा
bahvīrhaiyaṅgavānāṁ ca hyāsavānāṁ tathaiva ca nānā pakvānnasaṅghāṁśca mahāsvādurasā~stathā
"Abundant stores of fresh butter, and likewise of fermented drinks; and manifold heaps of cooked foods, of the most delicious flavors."
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.100.15)
नाना व्यञ्जनवस्तूनि गणदेवहितानि च । अमूल्यनानावस्त्राणि वह्निशौचानि यानि च
nānā vyañjanavastūni gaṇadevahitāni ca amūlyanānāvastrāṇi vahniśaucāni yāni ca
"Various kinds of relishes, agreeable to the ganas and the gods; priceless and manifold garments, including those purified by fire."
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.100.16)
मणिरत्नप्रकाराणि सुवर्णरजतानि च । द्रव्याण्येतानि चान्यानि सङ्गृह्य विधिपूर्वकम्
maṇiratnaprakārāṇi suvarṇarajatāni ca dravyāṇyetāni cānyāni saṅgṛhya vidhipūrvakam
"Kinds of gems and jewels, and gold and silver -- having gathered these and other articles, all in due order --"
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.100.17)
मङ्गलं कर्तुमारेभे गिरिर्मङ्गलकृद्दिने । संस्कारं कारयामासुः पार्वत्याः पर्वतस्त्रियः
maṅgalaṁ kartumārebhe girirmaṅgalakṛddine saṁskāraṁ kārayāmāsuḥ pārvatyāḥ parvatastriyaḥ
"-- the mountain began the auspicious rites on a day of good omen; and the wives of the mountains had Parvati's sacraments performed."
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.100.18)
ता मङ्गलं मुदा चक्रुर्भूषिता भूषणैः स्वयम् । पुरद्विजस्त्रियो हृष्टा लोकाचारं प्रचक्रिरे
tā maṅgalaṁ mudā cakrurbhūṣitā bhūṣaṇaiḥ svayam puradvijastriyo hṛṣṭā lokācāraṁ pracakrire
"They, themselves adorned with ornaments, joyfully performed the auspicious rites; and the brahmin women of the city, delighted, carried out the customary worldly observances."
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.100.19)
सोत्सवं विविधं तत्र सुमङ्गलपुरस्सरम् । हिमालयोऽपि हृष्टात्मा कृत्वाचारं सुमङ्गलम्
sotsavaṁ vividhaṁ tatra sumaṅgalapurassaram himālayo'pi hṛṣṭātmā kṛtvācāraṁ sumaṅgalam
"There, amid manifold festivity, ushered in by every auspicious rite, Himalaya too, his heart rejoicing, having performed the most auspicious observance --"
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.100.20)
सर्वभावेन सुप्रीतो बन्धुवर्गागमोत्सुकः । एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तस्य बान्धवाश्च निमन्त्रिताः
sarvabhāvena suprīto bandhuvargāgamotsukaḥ etasminnantare tasya bāndhavāśca nimantritāḥ
"-- was, with his whole heart, greatly pleased, and eager for the arrival of his kinsfolk; and meanwhile his invited relatives --"
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.100.21)
आजग्मुः सस्त्रियो हृष्टाः ससुताः सपरिच्छदाः । तदेव शृणु देवर्षे गिर्यागमनमादृतः
ājagmuḥ sastriyo hṛṣṭāḥ sasutāḥ saparicchadāḥ tadeva śṛṇu devarṣe giryāgamanamādṛtaḥ
"-- arrived, delighted, together with their wives, their sons, and their retinues. Hear now, O divine sage, that very arrival of the mountains, with due attention."
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.100.22)
वर्णयामि समासेन शिवप्रीतिविवृद्धये । देवालयगिरिर्यो हि दिव्यरूपधरो महान्
varṇayāmi samāsena śivaprītivivṛddhaye devālayagiriryo hi divyarūpadharo mahān
"I shall describe it briefly, for the growth of devotion to Shiva. The great mountain Devalaya, who bore a divine form --"
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.100.23)
नानारत्नपरिभ्राजत्समाजः सपरिच्छदः । नानामणिमहारत्नसारमादाय यत्नतः
nānāratnaparibhrājatsamājaḥ saparicchadaḥ nānāmaṇimahāratnasāramādāya yatnataḥ
"-- his company resplendent with manifold gems, together with his retinue, having gathered with great effort the very finest of many jewels and great gems --"
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.100.24)
सुवेषालङ्कृतः श्रीमान् जगाम स हिमालयम् । मन्दरः सर्वशोभाढ्यः सनारीतनयो गिरिः
suveṣālaṅkṛtaḥ śrīmān jagāma sa himālayam mandaraḥ sarvaśobhāḍhyaḥ sanārītanayo giriḥ
"-- attired handsomely and adorned, that glorious mountain went to Himalaya. Mandara, the mountain rich in every splendor, together with wife and sons --"
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.100.25)
सूपायनानि सङ्गृह्य जगाम विविधानि च । अस्ताचलोऽपि दिव्यात्मा सोपायन उदारधीः
sūpāyanāni saṅgṛhya jagāma vividhāni ca astācalo'pi divyātmā sopāyana udāradhīḥ
"-- having gathered fine and manifold gifts, went there. Astachala too, of divine nature and generous mind, bearing his own gift-offerings --"
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.100.26)
बहुशोभासमायुक्त आजगाम मुदान्वितः । उदयाचल आदाय सद्रत्नानि मणीनपि
bahuśobhāsamāyukta ājagāma mudānvitaḥ udayācala ādāya sadratnāni maṇīnapi
"-- endowed with great splendor, came filled with joy. Udayachala too, bringing fine jewels and gems as well --"
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.100.27)
अत्युत्कृष्टपरीवार आजगाम महासुखी । मलयो गिरिराजो हि सपरीवार आदृतः
atyutkṛṣṭaparīvāra ājagāma mahāsukhī malayo girirājo hi saparīvāra ādṛtaḥ
"-- with a most excellent retinue, came, greatly happy. Malaya, king of mountains, together with his family, in reverence --"
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.100.28)
सुदिव्यरचनायुक्त आययौ बहुसद्बलः । सद्यो दर्दुरनामा च मुदितः सकलत्रकः
sudivyaracanāyukta āyayau bahusadbalaḥ sadyo darduranāmā ca muditaḥ sakalatrakaḥ
"-- came, adorned with beautiful, divine ornamentation, endowed with abundant strength. And at once the mountain named Dardura, delighted, together with his wife --"
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.100.29)
बहुशोभान्वितस्तात ययौ हिमगिरेर्गृहम् । निषदोऽपि प्रहृष्टात्मा सपरिच्छद आययौ
bahuśobhānvitastāta yayau himagirergṛham niṣado'pi prahṛṣṭātmā saparicchada āyayau
"-- endowed with abundant splendor, O father, went to Himagiri's house. Nishada too, his heart greatly delighted, came together with his retinue."
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.100.30)
ससुतस्त्रीगणः प्रीत्या ययौ हिमगिरेर्गृहम् । आजगाम महाभाग्यो भूधरो गन्धमादनः
sasutastrīgaṇaḥ prītyā yayau himagirergṛham ājagāma mahābhāgyo bhūdharo gandhamādanaḥ
"Together with his sons and his company of women, he went with affection to Himagiri's house; and the greatly fortunate mountain Gandhamadana also came."
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.100.31)
करवीरस्तथैवापि महाविभवसंयुतः । महेन्द्रः पर्वतश्रेष्ठ आजगाम हिमालयम्
karavīrastathaivāpi mahāvibhavasaṁyutaḥ mahendraḥ parvataśreṣṭha ājagāma himālayam
"Karavira likewise, endowed with great magnificence; and Mahendra, best of mountains, came to Himalaya."
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.100.32)
सगणः ससुतस्त्रीको बहुशोभासमन्वितः । पारियात्रो हि हृष्टात्मा मणिरत्नाकरैर्युतः
sagaṇaḥ sasutastrīko bahuśobhāsamanvitaḥ pāriyātro hi hṛṣṭātmā maṇiratnākarairyutaḥ
"Together with his retinue, sons, and wife, endowed with abundant splendor -- Pariyatra too, his heart delighted, laden with mines of gems and jewels --"
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.100.33)
सगणः सपरीवार आययौ हिमभूधरम् । क्रौञ्चः पर्वतराजो हि महाबलपरिच्छदः । आजगाम गिरिश्रेष्ठः समुपायन आदृतः
sagaṇaḥ saparīvāra āyayau himabhūdharam krauñcaḥ parvatarājo hi mahābalaparicchadaḥ ājagāma giriśreṣṭhaḥ samupāyana ādṛtaḥ
"-- together with his retinue and family, came to the Himalayan mountain. Krauncha, king of mountains, with his most mighty retinue -- that best of mountains came, respectfully, bearing gifts."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.100.34)
पुरुषोत्तमशैलोऽपि सपरिच्छद आदृतः । महोपायनमादायाजगाम हिमभूधरम्
puruṣottamaśailo'pi saparicchada ādṛtaḥ mahopāyanamādāyājagāma himabhūdharam
"The mountain Purushottama too, with his retinue, respectfully, bringing a great gift, came to the Himalayan mountain."
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.100.35)
नीलः सलीलः ससुतः सस्त्रीको द्रव्यसंयुतः । आजगाम हिमागस्य गृहमानन्दसंयुतः
nīlaḥ salīlaḥ sasutaḥ sastrīko dravyasaṁyutaḥ ājagāma himāgasya gṛhamānandasaṁyutaḥ
"Nila, playful, together with his sons and wife, laden with goods, came, filled with joy, to Himavan's house."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.100.36)
त्रिकूटश्चित्रकूटोऽपि वेङ्कटः श्रीगिरिस्तथा । गोकामुखी नारदश्च हिमगेहमुपागमत्
trikūṭaścitrakūṭo'pi veṅkaṭaḥ śrīgiristathā gokāmukhī nāradaśca himagehamupāgamat
"Trikuta, Chitrakuta too, Venkata, and likewise Shrigiri; Gokamukhi, and Narada [the mountain] came to the Himalayan dwelling."
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.100.37)
विन्ध्यश्च पर्वतश्रेष्ठो नानासम्पत्समन्वितः । आजगाम प्रहृष्टात्मा सदारतनयः शुभः
vindhyaśca parvataśreṣṭho nānāsampatsamanvitaḥ ājagāma prahṛṣṭātmā sadāratanayaḥ śubhaḥ
"And Vindhya, best of mountains, endowed with manifold riches, auspicious, his heart greatly delighted, came together with his wife and sons."
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.100.38)
कालञ्जरो महाशैलो बहुहर्षसमन्वितः । बहुभिः स्वगणैः प्रीत्याजगाम हिमभूधरम्
kālañjaro mahāśailo bahuharṣasamanvitaḥ bahubhiḥ svagaṇaiḥ prītyājagāma himabhūdharam
"Kalanjara, the great mountain, filled with great joy, came with affection, together with many of his own attendants, to the Himalayan mountain."
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.100.39)
कैलासस्तु महाशैलो महाहर्षसमन्वितः । आजगाम कृपां कृत्वा सर्वोपरि लसत्प्रभुः
kailāsastu mahāśailo mahāharṣasamanvitaḥ ājagāma kṛpāṁ kṛtvā sarvopari lasatprabhuḥ
"Kailasa, the great mountain, filled with the greatest joy, came, bestowing his grace -- that lord who shines resplendent above all."
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.100.40)
अन्येऽपि भूभृतो ये हि द्वीपेष्वन्येष्वपि द्विज । इहापि येऽचलाः सर्वे आययुस्ते हिमालयम्
anye'pi bhūbhṛto ye hi dvīpeṣvanyeṣvapi dvija ihāpi ye'calāḥ sarve āyayuste himālayam
"O brahmin, other mountains too, those found in other continents, and all the mountains here as well -- all of them came to Himalaya."
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.100.41)
निमन्त्रिता नगास्तत्र तेन पूर्वं मुदा मुने । आययुर्निखिलाः प्रीत्या विवाहश्शिवयोरिति
nimantritā nagāstatra tena pūrvaṁ mudā mune āyayurnikhilāḥ prītyā vivāhaśśivayoriti
"O sage, all the mountains, invited by him beforehand with joy, came with affection, [each saying:] 'This is the wedding of Shiva and Shiva!'"
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.100.42)
तदा सर्वे समायाताः शोणभद्रादयः खलु । बहुशोभा महाप्रीत्या विवाहश्शिवयोरिति
tadā sarve samāyātāḥ śoṇabhadrādayaḥ khalu bahuśobhā mahāprītyā vivāhaśśivayoriti
"Then all of them arrived, headed indeed by Shonabhadra, with abundant splendor and great affection, [saying:] 'This is the wedding of Shiva and Shiva!'"
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.100.43)
नद्यः सर्वाः समायाता नानालङ्कारसंयुताः । दिव्यरूपधराः प्रीत्या विवाहश्शिवयोरिति
nadyaḥ sarvāḥ samāyātā nānālaṅkārasaṁyutāḥ divyarūpadharāḥ prītyā vivāhaśśivayoriti
"All the rivers came, adorned with manifold ornaments, bearing divine forms, with affection, [saying:] 'This is the wedding of Shiva and Shiva!'"
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.100.44)
गोदावरी च यमुना ब्रह्मस्त्रीर्वेणिका तथा । आययौ हिमशैलं वै विवाहश्शिवयोरिति
godāvarī ca yamunā brahmastrīrveṇikā tathā āyayau himaśailaṁ vai vivāhaśśivayoriti
"Godavari and Yamuna, Brahmastri and likewise Venika, came indeed to the Himalayan mountain, [saying:] 'This is the wedding of Shiva and Shiva!'"
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.100.45)
गङ्गा तु सुमहाप्रीत्या नानालङ्कारसंयुता । दिव्यरूपाययौ प्रीत्या विवाहश्शिवयोरिति
gaṅgā tu sumahāprītyā nānālaṅkārasaṁyutā divyarūpāyayau prītyā vivāhaśśivayoriti
"And Ganga, with the very greatest affection, adorned with manifold ornaments, in divine form, came with love, [saying:] 'This is the wedding of Shiva and Shiva!'"
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.100.46)
नर्मदा तु महामोदा रुद्रकन्या सरिद्वरा । महाप्रीत्याजगामाशु विवाहश्शिवयोरिति
narmadā tu mahāmodā rudrakanyā saridvarā mahāprītyājagāmāśu vivāhaśśivayoriti
"And Narmada, greatly rejoicing, daughter of Rudra, best among rivers, came swiftly with the greatest affection, [saying:] 'This is the wedding of Shiva and Shiva!'"
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.100.47)
आगतैस्तैस्ततः सर्वैः सर्वतो हिमभूधरम् । सङ्कुलासीत्पुरी दिव्या सर्वशोभासमन्विता
āgataistaistataḥ sarvaiḥ sarvato himabhūdharam saṅkulāsītpurī divyā sarvaśobhāsamanvitā
"With all of them thus arrived, on every side about the Himalayan mountain, that divine city became thronged, filled with every splendor."
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.100.48)
महोत्सवा लसत्केतुध्वजातोरणकाधिका । वितानविनिवृत्तार्का तथा नानालसत्प्रभा
mahotsavā lasatketudhvajātoraṇakādhikā vitānavinivṛttārkā tathā nānālasatprabhā
"It was alive with great festivity, resplendent with banners, flags, and archways in abundance, its canopies shutting out even the sun, and radiant with manifold splendor."
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.100.49)
हिमालयोऽपि सुप्रीत्यादरेण विविधेन च । तेषां चकार सम्मानं तासां चैव यथायथम्
himālayo'pi suprītyādareṇa vividhena ca teṣāṁ cakāra sammānaṁ tāsāṁ caiva yathāyatham
"Himalaya too, with great affection and manifold forms of respect, honored them all -- both the mountains and the rivers -- each in due measure."
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.100.50)
सर्वान्निवासयामास सुस्थानेषु पृथक् पृथक् । सामग्रीभिरनेकाभिस्तोषयामास कृत्स्नशः
sarvānnivāsayāmāsa susthāneṣu pṛthak pṛthak sāmagrībhiranekābhistoṣayāmāsa kṛtsnaśaḥ
"He had all of them lodged separately, each in a fine dwelling of their own, and satisfied every one of them fully with manifold provisions."
