The Building of the Wedding Pavilion

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.101.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । अथ शैलेश्वरः प्रीतो हिमवान्मुनिसत्तम । स्वपुरं रचयामास विचित्रं परमोत्सवम्

brahmovāca atha śaileśvaraḥ prīto himavānmunisattama svapuraṁ racayāmāsa vicitraṁ paramotsavam

Brahma said: "O best of sages, then Himavan, lord of the mountains, filled with joy, had his own city adorned wondrously for that supreme festival."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.101.2)

सिक्तमार्गं संस्कृतं च शोभितं परमर्द्धिभिः । द्वारि द्वारि च रम्भादि मङ्गलं द्रव्यसंयुतम्

siktamārgaṁ saṁskṛtaṁ ca śobhitaṁ paramarddhibhiḥ dvāri dvāri ca rambhādi maṅgalaṁ dravyasaṁyutam

"The roads were sprinkled and cleansed, and adorned with the greatest splendor; at every door were placed plantain trees and other auspicious objects."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.101.3)

प्राङ्गणं रचयामास रम्भास्तम्भसमन्वितम् । पट्टसूत्रैः सन्निबद्धं रसालपल्लवान्वितम्

prāṅgaṇaṁ racayāmāsa rambhāstambhasamanvitam paṭṭasūtraiḥ sannibaddhaṁ rasālapallavānvitam

"He had the courtyard adorned with pillars of plantain, bound round with silken threads, and hung with sprigs of mango."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.101.4)

मालतीमाल्यसंयुक्तं लसत्तोरणसुप्रभम् । शोभितं मङ्गलद्रव्यैश्चतुर्दिक्षु स्थितैः शुभैः

mālatīmālyasaṁyuktaṁ lasattoraṇasuprabham śobhitaṁ maṅgaladravyaiścaturdikṣu sthitaiḥ śubhaiḥ

"Adorned with garlands of jasmine, radiant with gleaming archways, and made resplendent with auspicious objects set in the four directions."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.101.5)

तथैव सर्वं परया मुदान्वितश्चक्रे गिरीन्द्रः स्वसुतार्थमेव । गर्गं पुरस्कृत्य महाप्रभावं प्रस्तावयोग्यं च सुमङ्गलं हि

tathaiva sarvaṁ parayā mudānvitaścakre girīndraḥ svasutārthameva gargaṁ puraskṛtya mahāprabhāvaṁ prastāvayogyaṁ ca sumaṅgalaṁ hi

"In just this way, filled with the greatest joy, the king of mountains did all of this for his own daughter's sake, placing the greatly powerful Garga at the fore, and seeing to all that was fitting and most auspicious for the occasion."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.101.6)

आहूय विश्वकर्माणं कारयामास सादरम् । मण्डपं च सुविस्तीर्णं वेदिकादिमनोहरम्

āhūya viśvakarmāṇaṁ kārayāmāsa sādaram maṇḍapaṁ ca suvistīrṇaṁ vedikādimanoharam

"Summoning Vishvakarma, he respectfully had him construct a most spacious pavilion, made beautiful with altars and the like."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.101.7)

अयुतेन सुरर्षे तद्योजनानां च विस्तृतम् । अनेकलक्षणोपेतं नानाश्चर्यसमन्वितम्

ayutena surarṣe tadyojanānāṁ ca vistṛtam anekalakṣaṇopetaṁ nānāścaryasamanvitam

"O sage among gods, it stretched ten thousand yojanas in extent, endowed with countless features, and filled with manifold wonders."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.101.8)

स्थावरं जङ्गमं सर्वं सदृशं तैर्मनोहरम् । सर्वतोऽद्भुतसर्वस्वं नानावस्तुचमत्कृतम्

sthāvaraṁ jaṅgamaṁ sarvaṁ sadṛśaṁ tairmanoharam sarvato'dbhutasarvasvaṁ nānāvastucamatkṛtam

"Everything, both fixed and moving, was made by them lifelike and beautiful; wondrous on every side, dazzling with its manifold objects."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.101.9)

जङ्गमं विजितं तत्र स्थावरेण विशेषतः । जङ्गमेन च तत्रासीज्जितं स्थावरमेव हि

jaṅgamaṁ vijitaṁ tatra sthāvareṇa viśeṣataḥ jaṅgamena ca tatrāsījjitaṁ sthāvarameva hi

"There the moving seemed outdone by the fixed, and there, in turn, the fixed seemed outdone by the moving."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.101.10)

पयसा च जिता तत्र स्थलभूमिर्न चान्यथा । जलं किं हि स्थलं किं हि न विदुः केऽपि कोविदाः

payasā ca jitā tatra sthalabhūmirna cānyathā jalaṁ kiṁ hi sthalaṁ kiṁ hi na viduḥ ke'pi kovidāḥ

"There the dry ground too seemed overcome by water, and not otherwise; not even the most learned could tell what was water and what was land."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.101.11)

क्वचित्सिंहाः कृत्रिमाश्च क्वचित्सारसपङ्क्तयः । क्वचिच्छिखण्डिनस्तत्र कृत्रिमाश्च मनोहराः

kvacitsiṁhāḥ kṛtrimāśca kvacitsārasapaṅktayaḥ kvacicchikhaṇḍinastatra kṛtrimāśca manoharāḥ

"In some places, artificial lions; in some, rows of cranes; and in others, there, lovely artificial peacocks."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.101.12)

क्वचित्स्त्रियः कृत्रिमाश्च नृत्यन्त्यः पुरुषैस्सह । मोहयन्त्यो जनान्सर्वान्पश्यन्त्यः कृत्रिमास्तथा

kvacitstriyaḥ kṛtrimāśca nṛtyantyaḥ puruṣaissaha mohayantyo janānsarvānpaśyantyaḥ kṛtrimāstathā

"In some places, artificial women, dancing together with men, enchanting all who beheld them, gazing about -- these too were artificial."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.101.13)

तथा तेनैव विधिना द्वारपाला मनोहराः । हस्तैर्धनूंषि चोद्धृत्य स्थावरा जङ्गमोपमाः

tathā tenaiva vidhinā dvārapālā manoharāḥ hastairdhanūṁṣi coddhṛtya sthāvarā jaṅgamopamāḥ

"In that same fashion were lovely doorkeepers too, bows raised in hand, motionless yet resembling the living."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.101.14)

द्वारि स्थिता महालक्ष्मीः कृत्रिमा रचिताद्भुता । सर्वलक्षणसंयुक्तागता साक्षात्पयोर्णवात्

dvāri sthitā mahālakṣmīḥ kṛtrimā racitādbhutā sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyuktāgatā sākṣātpayorṇavāt

"At the doorway stood an artificial Mahalakshmi, wondrously fashioned, endowed with every auspicious mark, as though she had come there directly from the ocean of milk."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.101.15)

गजाश्चालङ्कृता ह्यासन्कृत्रिमा अकृतोपमाः । तथाश्वाः सादिभिश्चैव गजाश्च गजसादिभिः

gajāścālaṅkṛtā hyāsankṛtrimā akṛtopamāḥ tathāśvāḥ sādibhiścaiva gajāśca gajasādibhiḥ

"There were adorned elephants as well, artificial yet beyond compare with anything else crafted; likewise horses with their riders, and elephants with their mahouts."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.101.16)

रथा रथिभिराकृष्टा महाश्चर्यसमन्विताः । वाहनानि तथान्यानि पत्तयः कृत्रिमास्तथा

rathā rathibhirākṛṣṭā mahāścaryasamanvitāḥ vāhanāni tathānyāni pattayaḥ kṛtrimāstathā

"There were chariots too, drawn along by charioteers, filled with the greatest wonder; and other vehicles as well, and likewise artificial foot-soldiers."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.101.17)

एवं विमोहनार्थं तु कृतं वै विश्वकर्मणा । देवानां च मुनीनां च तेन प्रीतात्मना मुने

evaṁ vimohanārthaṁ tu kṛtaṁ vai viśvakarmaṇā devānāṁ ca munīnāṁ ca tena prītātmanā mune

"Thus, O sage, all of this was fashioned by Vishvakarma, his heart delighted, for the very purpose of bewildering the gods and the sages."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.101.18)

महाद्वारि स्थितो नन्दी कृत्रिमश्च कृतो मुने । शुद्धस्फटिकसङ्काशो यथा नन्दी तथैव सः

mahādvāri sthito nandī kṛtrimaśca kṛto mune śuddhasphaṭikasaṅkāśo yathā nandī tathaiva saḥ

"At the great gate, O sage, stood an artificial Nandi, fashioned there -- resembling pure crystal, just as the real Nandi does."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.101.19)

तस्योपरि महादिव्यं पुष्पकं रत्नभूषितम् । राजितं पल्लवैः शुभ्रैश्चामरैश्च सुशोभितम्

tasyopari mahādivyaṁ puṣpakaṁ ratnabhūṣitam rājitaṁ pallavaiḥ śubhraiścāmaraiśca suśobhitam

"Above him was a great, divine flower-palanquin, adorned with jewels, resplendent with white sprigs, and beautified with chowries."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.101.20)

वामपार्श्वे गजौ द्वौ च शुद्धकाश्मीरसन्निभौ । चतुर्दन्तौ षष्टिवर्षौ भेदमानौ महाप्रभौ

vāmapārśve gajau dvau ca śuddhakāśmīrasannibhau caturdantau ṣaṣṭivarṣau bhedamānau mahāprabhau

"On the left side stood two elephants, resembling pure Kashmiri ivory, four-tusked, of sixty years, seeming to be in must, and of great splendor."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.101.21)

तथैवार्कनिभौ तेन कृतौ चाश्वौ महाप्रभौ । चामरालङ्कृतौ दिव्यौ दिव्यालङ्कारभूषितौ

tathaivārkanibhau tena kṛtau cāśvau mahāprabhau cāmarālaṅkṛtau divyau divyālaṅkārabhūṣitau

"Likewise, two horses of great splendor, radiant as the sun, were made by him, divine, adorned with chowries, and decorated with divine ornaments."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.101.22)

दंशिता वररत्नाढ्या लोकपालास्तथैव च । सर्वे देवा यथार्थं वै कृता वै विश्वकर्मणा

daṁśitā vararatnāḍhyā lokapālāstathaiva ca sarve devā yathārthaṁ vai kṛtā vai viśvakarmaṇā

"Armored, and rich with the finest jewels, the guardians of the directions likewise; all the gods indeed were fashioned true to their real forms by Vishvakarma."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.101.23)

तथा हि ऋषयःसर्वे भृग्वाद्याश्च तपोधनाः । अन्ये ह्युपसुरास्तद्वत्सिद्धाश्चान्येऽपि वै कृताः

tathā hi ṛṣayaḥsarve bhṛgvādyāśca tapodhanāḥ anye hyupasurāstadvatsiddhāścānye'pi vai kṛtāḥ

"So too were fashioned all the sages, headed by Bhrigu, rich in austerity; other lesser deities likewise, and other Siddhas as well."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.101.24)

विष्णुश्च पार्षदैः सर्वैर्गरुडाख्यैः समन्वितः । कृत्रिमो निर्मितस्तद्वत्परमाश्चर्यरूपवान्

viṣṇuśca pārṣadaiḥ sarvairgaruḍākhyaiḥ samanvitaḥ kṛtrimo nirmitastadvatparamāścaryarūpavān

"Vishnu too, together with all his attendants headed by Garuda, was likewise fashioned as an artificial figure, bearing a form of the most wondrous kind."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.101.25)

तथैवाहं सुतैर्वेदैस्सिद्धैश्च परिवारितः । कृत्रिमो निर्मितस्तद्वत्पठन्सूक्तानि नारद

tathaivāhaṁ sutairvedaissiddhaiśca parivāritaḥ kṛtrimo nirmitastadvatpaṭhansūktāni nārada

"O Narada, likewise I myself, surrounded by my sons, by the Vedas, and by the Siddhas, was fashioned as an artificial figure, reciting sacred hymns."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.101.26)

ऐरावतगजारूढः शक्रः स्वदलसंयुतः । कृत्रिमो निर्मितस्तद्वत्परिपूर्णेन्दुसन्निभः

airāvatagajārūḍhaḥ śakraḥ svadalasaṁyutaḥ kṛtrimo nirmitastadvatparipūrṇendusannibhaḥ

"Indra, mounted on the elephant Airavata, together with his own host, was likewise fashioned as an artificial figure, resembling the full moon."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.101.27)

किं बहूक्तेन देवर्षे सर्वो वै विश्वकर्मणा । हिमागप्रेरितेनाशु क्लृप्तःसुरसमाजकः

kiṁ bahūktena devarṣe sarvo vai viśvakarmaṇā himāgapreritenāśu klṛptaḥsurasamājakaḥ

"What need is there, O sage among gods, for many words? By Vishvakarma, urged on by Himavan, the entire assembly of gods was swiftly fashioned."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.101.28)

एवम्भूतः कृतस्तेन मण्डपो दिव्यरूपवान् । अनेकाश्चर्यसम्भूतो महान्देवविमोहनः

evambhūtaḥ kṛtastena maṇḍapo divyarūpavān anekāścaryasambhūto mahāndevavimohanaḥ

"In this way, a pavilion of divine form was fashioned by him -- great, born of countless wonders, bewildering even to the gods."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.101.29)

अथाज्ञप्तो गिरीशेन विश्वकर्मा महामतिः । निवासार्थं सुरादीनां तत्तल्लोकान् हि यत्नतः

athājñapto girīśena viśvakarmā mahāmatiḥ nivāsārthaṁ surādīnāṁ tattallokān hi yatnataḥ

"Then, commanded by the lord of mountains, Vishvakarma, of great wisdom, diligently fashioned those respective abodes for the dwelling of the gods and others."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.101.30)

तत्रैव च महामञ्चाः सुप्रभाः परमाद्भुताः । रचिताःसुखदा दिव्यास्तेषां वै विश्वकर्मणा

tatraiva ca mahāmañcāḥ suprabhāḥ paramādbhutāḥ racitāḥsukhadā divyāsteṣāṁ vai viśvakarmaṇā

"And there too were built great platforms, radiant and most wondrous, delightful and divine, made for them by Vishvakarma."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.101.31)

तथा स सत्यलोकं वै विरेचे क्षणतोऽद्भुतम् । दीप्त्या परमया युक्तं निवासार्थं स्वयम्भुवः

tathā sa satyalokaṁ vai virece kṣaṇato'dbhutam dīptyā paramayā yuktaṁ nivāsārthaṁ svayambhuvaḥ

"In just the same way, he made even Satyaloka itself shine forth in an instant, wondrous, endowed with the highest radiance, for the dwelling of Svayambhu."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.101.32)

तथैव विष्णोस्त्वपरं वैकुण्ठाख्यं महोज्ज्वलम् । विरेचे क्षणतो दिव्यं नानाश्चर्यसमन्वितम्

tathaiva viṣṇostvaparaṁ vaikuṇṭhākhyaṁ mahojjvalam virece kṣaṇato divyaṁ nānāścaryasamanvitam

"Likewise, Vishnu's other realm, called Vaikuntha, greatly resplendent, he made shine forth in an instant, divine, and filled with manifold wonders."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.101.33)

अमरेशगृहं दिव्यं तथैवाद्भुतमुत्तमम् । विरेचे विश्वकर्मासौ सर्वैश्वर्यसमन्वितम्

amareśagṛhaṁ divyaṁ tathaivādbhutamuttamam virece viśvakarmāsau sarvaiśvaryasamanvitam

"Likewise the divine house of the lord of the immortals too, wondrous and excellent, that Vishvakarma made resplendent, endowed with every majesty."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.101.34)

गृहाणि लोकपालानां विरेचे सुन्दराणि च । तद्वत्स प्रीतितो दिव्यान्यद्भुतानि महान्ति च

gṛhāṇi lokapālānāṁ virece sundarāṇi ca tadvatsa prītito divyānyadbhutāni mahānti ca

"The dwellings of the guardians of the directions too he likewise made beautiful and resplendent, all with delight -- divine, wondrous, and great."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.101.35)

अन्येषाममराणां च सर्वेषां क्रमशस्तथा । सदनानि विचित्राणि रचितानि च तेन वै

anyeṣāmamarāṇāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ kramaśastathā sadanāni vicitrāṇi racitāni ca tena vai

"And for all the other immortals too, each in due order, wondrous dwellings were fashioned by him indeed."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.101.36)

विश्वकर्मा महाबुद्धिः प्राप्तशम्भुमहावरः । विरेचे क्षणतः सर्वं शिवतुष्ट्यर्थमेव च

viśvakarmā mahābuddhiḥ prāptaśambhumahāvaraḥ virece kṣaṇataḥ sarvaṁ śivatuṣṭyarthameva ca

"Vishvakarma, of great intellect, having obtained Shambhu's own great boon, made everything resplendent in an instant, purely for the sake of pleasing Shiva."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.101.37)

तथैव चित्रं परमं महोज्ज्वलं महाप्रभं देववरैः सुपूजितम् । गिरीशचिह्नं शिवलोकसंस्थितं सुशोभितं शम्भुगृहं चकार

tathaiva citraṁ paramaṁ mahojjvalaṁ mahāprabhaṁ devavaraiḥ supūjitam girīśacihnaṁ śivalokasaṁsthitaṁ suśobhitaṁ śambhugṛhaṁ cakāra

"And in the same way he built Shambhu's own house -- wondrous, supremely resplendent, of the greatest brilliance, well worshipped by the finest of the gods, marked with the sign of the Lord of Mountains, seeming to stand within Shivaloka itself, and beautifully adorned."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.101.38)

एवम्भूता कृता तेन रचना विश्वकर्मणा । विचित्रा शिवतुष्ट्यर्थं पराश्चर्या महोज्ज्वला

evambhūtā kṛtā tena racanā viśvakarmaṇā vicitrā śivatuṣṭyarthaṁ parāścaryā mahojjvalā

"Such was the arrangement made by Vishvakarma -- wondrous, fashioned for the sake of pleasing Shiva, of the greatest marvel, and supremely resplendent."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.101.39)

एवं कृत्वाखिलं चेदं व्यवहारं च लौकिकम् । पर्यैक्षिष्ट मुदा शम्भ्वागमनं स हिमाचलः

evaṁ kṛtvākhilaṁ cedaṁ vyavahāraṁ ca laukikam paryaikṣiṣṭa mudā śambhvāgamanaṁ sa himācalaḥ

"Having thus accomplished this entire worldly business, Himachala joyfully awaited and watched for Shambhu's arrival."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.101.40)

इति प्रोक्तमशेषेण वृत्तान्तं प्रमुदावहम् । हिमालयस्य देवर्षे किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि

iti proktamaśeṣeṇa vṛttāntaṁ pramudāvaham himālayasya devarṣe kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi

"Thus has this joy-bringing account of Himalaya been told to you in full, O divine sage. What more do you wish to hear?"
