Shiva's Wedding Procession

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.102.1)

नारद उवाच । विधे तात महाप्राज्ञ विष्णुशिष्य नमोऽस्तु ते । अद्भुतेयं कथाश्रावि त्वत्तोऽस्माभिः कृपानिधे

nārada uvāca vidhe tāta mahāprājña viṣṇuśiṣya namo'stu te adbhuteyaṁ kathāśrāvi tvatto'smābhiḥ kṛpānidhe

Narada said: "O Creator, father, most wise one, disciple of Vishnu, homage to you! O ocean of compassion, we have heard this wondrous story from you."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.102.2)

इदानीं श्रोतुमिच्छामि चरितं शशिमौलिनः । वैवाहिकं सुमाङ्गल्यं सर्वाघौघविनाशनम्

idānīṁ śrotumicchāmi caritaṁ śaśimaulinaḥ vaivāhikaṁ sumāṅgalyaṁ sarvāghaughavināśanam

"Now I wish to hear the story of the moon-crested one -- his marriage, most auspicious, that destroys the entire mass of sins."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.102.3)

किं चकार महादेवः प्राप्य मङ्गलपत्रिकाम् । तां श्रावय कथां दिव्यां शङ्करस्य परात्मनः

kiṁ cakāra mahādevaḥ prāpya maṅgalapatrikām tāṁ śrāvaya kathāṁ divyāṁ śaṅkarasya parātmanaḥ

"What did Mahadeva do, upon receiving the auspicious letter? Tell me that divine story of Shankara, the Supreme Self."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.102.4)

ब्रह्मोवाच । शृणु वत्स महाप्राज्ञ शाङ्करं परमं यशः । यच्चकार महादेवः प्राप्य मङ्गलपत्रिकाम्

brahmovāca śṛṇu vatsa mahāprājña śāṅkaraṁ paramaṁ yaśaḥ yaccakāra mahādevaḥ prāpya maṅgalapatrikām

Brahma said: "Hear, O most wise child, of Shankara's supreme glory -- what Mahadeva did upon receiving the auspicious letter."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.102.5)

अथ शम्भुर्गृहीत्वा तां मुदा मङ्गलपत्रिकाम् । विजहास प्रहृष्टात्मा मानं तेषां व्यधाद्विभुः

atha śambhurgṛhītvā tāṁ mudā maṅgalapatrikām vijahāsa prahṛṣṭātmā mānaṁ teṣāṁ vyadhādvibhuḥ

"Then Shambhu, joyfully taking up that auspicious letter, laughed, his heart delighted, and that mighty Lord bestowed honor upon them [the messengers]."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.102.6)

वाचयित्वा च तां सम्यग्स्वीचकार विधानतः । तज्जनान्यापयामास बहुसम्मान्य चादृतः

vācayitvā ca tāṁ samyagsvīcakāra vidhānataḥ tajjanānyāpayāmāsa bahusammānya cādṛtaḥ

"Having had it duly read aloud, he accepted it properly, according to rite; and, honoring those people greatly and with respect, he sent them on their way."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.102.7)

उवाच मुनिवर्गांस्तान्कार्यं सम्यक् कृतं शुभम् । आगन्तव्यं विवाहे मे विवाहः स्वीकृतो मया

uvāca munivargāṁstānkāryaṁ samyak kṛtaṁ śubham āgantavyaṁ vivāhe me vivāhaḥ svīkṛto mayā

"He said to that group of sages: 'The task has been done well, and auspiciously. All must come to my wedding; the marriage has been accepted by me.'"

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.102.8)

इत्याकर्ण्य वचः शम्भोः प्रहृष्टास्ते प्रणम्य तम् । परिक्रम्य ययुर्धाम शंसन्तः स्वं विधिं परम्

ityākarṇya vacaḥ śambhoḥ prahṛṣṭāste praṇamya tam parikramya yayurdhāma śaṁsantaḥ svaṁ vidhiṁ param

"Hearing these words of Shambhu, they, filled with delight, bowed to him, circumambulated him, and departed to their own abodes, praising his supreme decree."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.102.9)

अथ देवेश्वरः शम्भुः सामरस्तवां मुने द्रुतम् । लौकिकाचारमाश्रित्य महालीलाकरः प्रभुः

atha deveśvaraḥ śambhuḥ sāmarastavāṁ mune drutam laukikācāramāśritya mahālīlākaraḥ prabhuḥ

"Then Shambhu, lord of the gods, together with the gods, O sage, swiftly [turned to] you -- that Lord of great divine play, following worldly custom --"

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.102.10)

त्वमागतः परप्रीत्या प्रशंसंस्त्वं विधिं परम् । प्रणमंश्च नतस्कन्धो विनीतात्मा कृताञ्जलिः

tvamāgataḥ paraprītyā praśaṁsaṁstvaṁ vidhiṁ param praṇamaṁśca nataskandho vinītātmā kṛtāñjaliḥ

"You had come there with the greatest affection, praising his supreme ordinance, bowing with shoulders bent, your heart humbled, your palms joined in reverence."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.102.11)

अस्तौस्सुजयशब्दानि समुच्चार्य मुहुर्मुहुः । निदेशं प्रार्थयंस्तस्य प्रशंसंस्त्वं विधिम्मुने

astaussujayaśabdāni samuccārya muhurmuhuḥ nideśaṁ prārthayaṁstasya praśaṁsaṁstvaṁ vidhimmune

"You praised him, crying out sounds of victory again and again; you begged for his command, O sage, all the while extolling his ordinance."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.102.12)

ततः शम्भुः प्रहृष्टात्मा दर्शयँल्लौकिकीं गतिम् । उवाच मुनिवर्य त्वां प्रीणयन् शुभया गिरा

tataḥ śambhuḥ prahṛṣṭātmā darśaya~llaukikīṁ gatim uvāca munivarya tvāṁ prīṇayan śubhayā girā

"Then Shambhu, his heart delighted, displaying the worldly way, spoke to you, O best of sages, gladdening you with his auspicious voice."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.102.13)

शिव उवाच । प्रीत्या शृणु मुनिश्रेष्ठ ह्यस्मत्तोऽद्य वदामि ते । ब्रुवे तत्त्वां प्रियो मे यद्भक्तराजशिरोमणिः

śiva uvāca prītyā śṛṇu muniśreṣṭha hyasmatto'dya vadāmi te bruve tattvāṁ priyo me yadbhaktarājaśiromaṇiḥ

Shiva said: "Hear with love, O best of sages; today I myself speak this to you. I tell you this because you are dear to me, the very crest-jewel among devoted kings."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.102.14)

कृतं महत्तपो देव्या पार्वत्या तव शासनात् । तस्यै वरो मया दत्तः पतित्वे तोषितेन वै

kṛtaṁ mahattapo devyā pārvatyā tava śāsanāt tasyai varo mayā dattaḥ patitve toṣitena vai

"Great penance was performed by the goddess Parvati, at your own instruction; and to her, indeed, being well pleased, I granted the boon of taking her as my wife."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.102.15)

करिष्येऽहं विवाहं च तस्या वश्यो हि भक्तितः । सप्तर्षिभिः साधितं च तल्लग्नं शोधितं च तैः

kariṣye'haṁ vivāhaṁ ca tasyā vaśyo hi bhaktitaḥ saptarṣibhiḥ sādhitaṁ ca tallagnaṁ śodhitaṁ ca taiḥ

"I shall now perform the marriage, for indeed I am bound by devotion to her; and that auspicious moment has already been fixed and purified by the seven sages."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.102.16)

अद्यतःसप्तमे चाह्नि तद्भविष्यति नारद । महोत्सवं करिष्यामि लौकिकीं गतिमाश्रितः

adyataḥsaptame cāhni tadbhaviṣyati nārada mahotsavaṁ kariṣyāmi laukikīṁ gatimāśritaḥ

"O Narada, it shall come to pass on the seventh day from today; I shall hold a great festival, following the worldly custom."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.102.17)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य शङ्करस्य परात्मनः । प्रसन्नधीः प्रभुं नत्वा तात त्वं वाक्यमब्रवीः

brahmovāca iti śrutvā vacastasya śaṅkarasya parātmanaḥ prasannadhīḥ prabhuṁ natvā tāta tvaṁ vākyamabravīḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing these words of Shankara, the Supreme Self, O son, you, your mind gladdened, bowed to the Lord and spoke as follows."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.102.18)

नारद उवाच । भवतस्तु व्रतमिदं भक्तवश्यो भवान्मतः । सम्यक् कृतं च भवता पार्वतीमानसेप्सितम्

nārada uvāca bhavatastu vratamidaṁ bhaktavaśyo bhavānmataḥ samyak kṛtaṁ ca bhavatā pārvatīmānasepsitam

Narada said: "This indeed is your own vow -- you are held to be one who is governed by his devotees. Well have you fulfilled what Parvati desired in her heart."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.102.19)

कार्यं मत्सदृशं किञ्चित्कथनीयं त्वया विभो । मत्वा स्वसेवकं मां हि कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते

kāryaṁ matsadṛśaṁ kiñcitkathanīyaṁ tvayā vibho matvā svasevakaṁ māṁ hi kṛpāṁ kuru namo'stu te

"O mighty Lord, if there is any task fitting for one such as me, tell it to me; regarding me as your own servant, show me your grace. Homage to you."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.102.20)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्तस्तु त्वया शम्भुः शङ्करो भक्तवत्सलः । प्रत्युवाच प्रसन्नात्मा सादरं त्वां मुनीश्वर

brahmovāca ityuktastu tvayā śambhuḥ śaṅkaro bhaktavatsalaḥ pratyuvāca prasannātmā sādaraṁ tvāṁ munīśvara

Brahma said: "Thus addressed by you, Shambhu Shankara, ever tender toward his devotees, his heart pleased, replied to you, O lord of sages, with due respect."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.102.21)

शिव उवाच । विष्णुप्रभृतिदेवांश्च मुनीन् सिद्धानपि ध्रुवम् । त्वं निमन्त्रय मद्वाण्या मुनेऽन्यानपि सर्वतः

śiva uvāca viṣṇuprabhṛtidevāṁśca munīn siddhānapi dhruvam tvaṁ nimantraya madvāṇyā mune'nyānapi sarvataḥ

Shiva said: "Vishnu and the other gods, the sages, and surely the Siddhas too -- invite them, O sage, in my own words; and invite all others as well, from every side."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.102.22)

सर्व आयान्तु सोत्साहाः सर्वशोभासमन्विताः । सस्त्रीसुतगणाः प्रीत्या मम शासनगौरवात्

sarva āyāntu sotsāhāḥ sarvaśobhāsamanvitāḥ sastrīsutagaṇāḥ prītyā mama śāsanagauravāt

"Let all come with eagerness, endowed with every splendor, together with their wives, sons, and hosts, with affection, out of respect for my command."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.102.23)

नागमिष्यन्ति ये त्वत्र मद्विवाहोत्सवे मुने । ते स्वकीया न मन्तव्या मया देवादयः खलु

nāgamiṣyanti ye tvatra madvivāhotsave mune te svakīyā na mantavyā mayā devādayaḥ khalu

"O sage, whoever does not come here to this wedding festival of mine shall not be regarded by me as my own -- be they gods or anyone else."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.102.24)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इतीशाज्ञां ततो धृत्वा भवान् शङ्करवल्लभः । सर्वान्निमन्त्रयामास तं तं गत्वा द्रुतं मुने

brahmovāca itīśājñāṁ tato dhṛtvā bhavān śaṅkaravallabhaḥ sarvānnimantrayāmāsa taṁ taṁ gatvā drutaṁ mune

Brahma said: "Thus, O sage, having received the Lord's command, you, beloved of Shankara, went swiftly to each of them in turn and invited them all."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.102.25)

शम्भूपकण्ठमागत्य द्रुतं मुनिवरो भवान् । तद् हूत्यात्तत्र सन्तस्थौ तदाज्ञां प्राप्य नारद

śambhūpakaṇṭhamāgatya drutaṁ munivaro bhavān tad hūtyāttatra santasthau tadājñāṁ prāpya nārada

"O Narada, coming swiftly back to Shambhu's side, you, best of sages, having summoned them all, remained there, having received his command."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.102.26)

शिवोऽपि तस्थौ सोत्कण्ठस्तदागमनलालसः । स्वगणैःसोत्सवैः सर्वैर्नृत्यद्भिः सर्वतो दिशम्

śivo'pi tasthau sotkaṇṭhastadāgamanalālasaḥ svagaṇaiḥsotsavaiḥ sarvairnṛtyadbhiḥ sarvato diśam

"Shiva too remained, full of longing, eager for their arrival, together with all his ganas, who danced in festivity on every side."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.102.27)

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु रचयित्वा स्ववेषकम् । आजगामाच्युतः शीघ्रं कैलासं सपरिच्छदः

etasminneva kāle tu racayitvā svaveṣakam ājagāmācyutaḥ śīghraṁ kailāsaṁ saparicchadaḥ

"At this very time, having arrayed himself in his own attire, Achyuta came swiftly to Kailasa, together with his retinue."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.102.28)

शिवं प्रणम्य सद्भक्त्या सदारः सदलो मुदा । तदाज्ञां प्राप्य सन्तस्थौ सुस्थाने प्रीतमानसः

śivaṁ praṇamya sadbhaktyā sadāraḥ sadalo mudā tadājñāṁ prāpya santasthau susthāne prītamānasaḥ

"Bowing to Shiva with true devotion, together with his wife and his host, joyfully, and having received his command, he remained there, his mind content, in a fitting place."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.102.29)

तथाहं स्वगणैराशु कैलासमगमं मुदा । प्रभुं प्रणम्यातिष्ठं वै सानन्दः स्वगणान्वितः

tathāhaṁ svagaṇairāśu kailāsamagamaṁ mudā prabhuṁ praṇamyātiṣṭhaṁ vai sānandaḥ svagaṇānvitaḥ

"Likewise I too, with my own hosts, went swiftly to Kailasa with joy; having bowed to the Lord, I too remained there, joyful, together with my own retinue."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.102.30)

इन्द्रादयो लोकपाला आययुः सपरिच्छदाः । तथैवालङ्कृतास्सर्वे सोत्सवास्सकलत्रकाः

indrādayo lokapālā āyayuḥ saparicchadāḥ tathaivālaṅkṛtāssarve sotsavāssakalatrakāḥ

"Indra and the other guardians of the quarters came, each with his own retinue; likewise, all of them, adorned and amid festivity, together with their wives."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.102.31)

तथैवं मुनयो नागास्सिद्धा उपसुरास्तथा । आययुश्चापरेऽपीह सोत्सवाः सुनिमन्त्रिताः

tathaivaṁ munayo nāgāssiddhā upasurāstathā āyayuścāpare'pīha sotsavāḥ sunimantritāḥ

"Likewise the sages, the Nagas, the Siddhas, and the lesser gods as well; other beings too came here, amid festivity, duly invited."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.102.32)

महेश्वरस्तदा तत्रागतानां च पृथक् पृथक् । सर्वेषाममराद्यानां सत्कारं व्यदधान्मुदा

maheśvarastadā tatrāgatānāṁ ca pṛthak pṛthak sarveṣāmamarādyānāṁ satkāraṁ vyadadhānmudā

"Maheshvara then, with delight, bestowed honor upon all who had gathered there, upon each of the immortals and the rest, one by one."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.102.33)

अथोत्सवो महानासीत्कैलासे परमोऽद्भुतः । नृत्यादिकं तदा चक्रुर्यथायोग्यं सुरस्त्रियः

athotsavo mahānāsītkailāse paramo'dbhutaḥ nṛtyādikaṁ tadā cakruryathāyogyaṁ surastriyaḥ

"Then there was a great festival at Kailasa, most wondrous; the celestial women then performed dance and the like, each in her own fitting way."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.102.34)

एतस्मिन्समये देवा विष्ण्वाद्या ये समागताः । यात्रां कारयितुं शम्भोस्तत्रोषुस्तेऽखिला मुने

etasminsamaye devā viṣṇvādyā ye samāgatāḥ yātrāṁ kārayituṁ śambhostatroṣuste'khilā mune

"O sage, at this time all the gods who had gathered, headed by Vishnu, remained there in order to carry out Shambhu's wedding procession."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.102.35)

शिवाज्ञप्तास्तदा सर्वे मदीयमिति यन्त्रिताः । शिवकार्यमिदं सर्वं चक्रिरे शिवसेवनम्

śivājñaptāstadā sarve madīyamiti yantritāḥ śivakāryamidaṁ sarvaṁ cakrire śivasevanam

"Then, commanded by Shiva, all of them, bound by the thought 'this is my own affair too,' carried out this entire work of Shiva -- this service to Shiva."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.102.36)

मातरः सप्त तास्तत्र शिवभूषाविधिं परम् । चक्रिरे च मुदा युक्ता यथायोग्यं तथा पुनः

mātaraḥ sapta tāstatra śivabhūṣāvidhiṁ param cakrire ca mudā yuktā yathāyogyaṁ tathā punaḥ

"There the seven Mother-goddesses performed the supreme rite of adorning Shiva, joyfully engaged, each once more in her own fitting way."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.102.37)

तस्य स्वाभाविको वेषो भूषाविधिरभूत्तदा । तस्येच्छया मुनिश्रेष्ठ परमेशस्य सुप्रभोः

tasya svābhāviko veṣo bhūṣāvidhirabhūttadā tasyecchayā muniśreṣṭha parameśasya suprabhoḥ

"O best of sages, then, by the will of that Supreme Lord, that glorious one, his own natural attire itself became his manner of adornment."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.102.38)

चन्द्रश्च मुकुटस्थाने सान्निध्यमकरोत्तदा । लोचनं सुन्दरं ह्यासीत्तृतीयं तिलकं शुभम्

candraśca mukuṭasthāne sānnidhyamakarottadā locanaṁ sundaraṁ hyāsīttṛtīyaṁ tilakaṁ śubham

"The moon then took its place upon his crown; and his beautiful third eye became, in effect, his auspicious tilaka mark."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.102.39)

कर्णाभरणरूपौ च यौ हि सर्पौ प्रकीर्तितौ । कुण्डलेऽभवतां तस्य नानारत्नान्विते मुने

karṇābharaṇarūpau ca yau hi sarpau prakīrtitau kuṇḍale'bhavatāṁ tasya nānāratnānvite mune

"O sage, the two serpents renowned in the form of ear-ornaments became his earrings, set with manifold gems."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.102.40)

अन्याङ्गसंस्थिताः सर्पाः तदङ्गाभरणानि च । बभूवुरतिरम्याणि नानारत्नमयानि च

anyāṅgasaṁsthitāḥ sarpāḥ tadaṅgābharaṇāni ca babhūvuratiramyāṇi nānāratnamayāni ca

"The serpents residing on his other limbs became his bodily ornaments, exceedingly lovely, and made of manifold gems."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.102.41)

विभूतिरङ्गरागोऽभूच्चन्दनादिसमुद्भवः । तद्दुकूलमभूद्दिव्यं गजचर्मादि सुन्दरम्

vibhūtiraṅgarāgo'bhūccandanādisamudbhavaḥ taddukūlamabhūddivyaṁ gajacarmādi sundaram

"The sacred ash became his bodily unguent, in place of sandalwood and the like; and the beautiful elephant-hide and such became his divine fine raiment."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.102.42)

ईदृशं सुन्दरं रूपं जातं वर्णातिदुष्करम् । ईश्वरोऽपि स्वयं साक्षादैश्वर्यं लब्धवान् स्वतः

īdṛśaṁ sundaraṁ rūpaṁ jātaṁ varṇātiduṣkaram īśvaro'pi svayaṁ sākṣādaiśvaryaṁ labdhavān svataḥ

"Such a beautiful form came to be, one most difficult to put into words; even the Lord himself, in his own person, thus obtained this majesty spontaneously, of his own accord."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.102.43)

ततश्च सर्वे सुरपक्षदानवा नागाः पतङ्गाप्सरसो महर्षयः । समेत्य सर्वे शिवसन्निधिं तदा महोत्सवाः प्रोचुरहो मुदान्विताः

tataśca sarve surapakṣadānavā nāgāḥ pataṅgāpsaraso maharṣayaḥ sametya sarve śivasannidhiṁ tadā mahotsavāḥ procuraho mudānvitāḥ

"Then all of them -- the ranks of gods and demons, the Nagas, the birds, the Apsaras, and the great sages -- gathering together there in Shiva's presence, amid great festivity and filled with joy, cried out."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.102.44)

सर्व ऊचुः । गच्छ गच्छ महादेव विवाहार्थं महेश्वर । गिरिजाया महादेव्याः सहास्माभिः कृपां कुरु

sarva ūcuḥ gaccha gaccha mahādeva vivāhārthaṁ maheśvara girijāyā mahādevyāḥ sahāsmābhiḥ kṛpāṁ kuru

All of them said: "Go, go, O Mahadeva, for the sake of the wedding, O Maheshvara! Together with us, show your grace toward Girija, the great Goddess!"

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.102.45)

ततो विष्णुरुवाचेदं प्रस्तावसदृशं वचः । प्रणम्य शङ्करं भक्त्या विज्ञानप्रीतमानसः

tato viṣṇuruvācedaṁ prastāvasadṛśaṁ vacaḥ praṇamya śaṅkaraṁ bhaktyā vijñānaprītamānasaḥ

"Then Vishnu, bowing to Shankara with devotion, his mind pleased with understanding, spoke this word, fitting to the occasion."

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.102.46)

विष्णुरुवाच । देव देव महादेव शरणागतवत्सल । कार्यकर्ता स्वभक्तानां विज्ञप्तिं शृणु मे प्रभो

viṣṇuruvāca deva deva mahādeva śaraṇāgatavatsala kāryakartā svabhaktānāṁ vijñaptiṁ śṛṇu me prabho

Vishnu said: "O god of gods, Mahadeva, tender toward those who take refuge in you, accomplisher of your devotees' tasks -- hear my petition, O Lord."

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.102.47)

गृह्योक्तविधिना शम्भो स्वविवाहस्य शङ्कर । गिरीशसुतया देव्या कर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि

gṛhyoktavidhinā śambho svavivāhasya śaṅkara girīśasutayā devyā karma kartumihārhasi

"O Shambhu, O Shankara, according to the rite prescribed in the Grihya texts, it is fitting that you here perform the ceremony of your own marriage with the goddess, daughter of the Lord of Mountains."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.102.48)

त्वया च क्रियमाणे तु विवाहस्य विधौ हर । स एव हि तथा लोके सर्वः सुख्यातिमाप्नुयात्

tvayā ca kriyamāṇe tu vivāhasya vidhau hara sa eva hi tathā loke sarvaḥ sukhyātimāpnuyāt

"O Hara, when the rite of marriage is performed by you, then, in just that same way, all the world shall come to share in that good renown."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.102.49)

मण्डपस्थापनं नान्दीमुखं तत्कुलधर्मतः । कारय प्रीतितो नाथ लोके स्वं ख्यापयन् यशः

maṇḍapasthāpanaṁ nāndīmukhaṁ tatkuladharmataḥ kāraya prītito nātha loke svaṁ khyāpayan yaśaḥ

"O Lord, out of love, have the setting-up of the pavilion and the Nandimukha rite performed, according to the custom befitting your own lineage, and thus proclaim your own glory in the world."

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.102.50)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एवमुक्तस्तदा शम्भुर्विष्णुना परमेश्वरः । लौकिकाचारनिरतो विधिना तच्चकार सः

brahmovāca evamuktastadā śambhurviṣṇunā parameśvaraḥ laukikācāranirato vidhinā taccakāra saḥ

Brahma said: "Thus addressed by Vishnu, Shambhu, the Supreme Lord, intent on following worldly custom, then performed that rite according to due prescription."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.102.51)

अहं ह्यधिकृतस्तेन सर्वमभ्युदयोचितम् । अकुर्वं मुनिभिः प्रीत्या तत्र तत्कर्म चादरात्

ahaṁ hyadhikṛtastena sarvamabhyudayocitam akurvaṁ munibhiḥ prītyā tatra tatkarma cādarāt

"I myself was appointed by him over everything befitting this auspicious occasion; and I, together with the sages, performed that rite there with love and respect."

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.102.52)

कश्यपोऽत्रिर्वसिष्ठश्च गौतमो भागुरिर्गुरुः । कण्वो बृहस्पतिः शक्तिर्जमदग्निः पराशरः

kaśyapo'trirvasiṣṭhaśca gautamo bhāgurirguruḥ kaṇvo bṛhaspatiḥ śaktirjamadagniḥ parāśaraḥ

"Kashyapa, Atri, and Vasishtha, Gautama, Bhaguri the preceptor, Kanva, Brihaspati, Shakti, Jamadagni, Parashara --"

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.102.53)

मार्कण्डेयश्शिलापाकोऽरुणपालोऽकृतश्रमः । अगस्त्यश्च्यवनो गर्गश्शिलादोऽथ महामुने

mārkaṇḍeyaśśilāpāko'ruṇapālo'kṛtaśramaḥ agastyaścyavano gargaśśilādo'tha mahāmune

"O great sage, Markandeya, Shilapaka, Arunapala, Akritashrama; Agastya, Chyavana, Garga, and Shilada --"

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.102.54)

दधीचिरुपमन्युश्च भरद्वाजोऽकृतव्रणः । पिप्पलादोऽथ कुशिकः कौत्सो व्यासः सशिष्यकः

dadhīcirupamanyuśca bharadvājo'kṛtavraṇaḥ pippalādo'tha kuśikaḥ kautso vyāsaḥ saśiṣyakaḥ

"Dadhichi, Upamanyu, and Bharadvaja, Akritavrana; Pippalada, Kushika, Kautsa, and Vyasa together with his disciple --"

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.102.55)

एते चान्ये च बहव आगताश्शिवसन्निधिम् । मया सुनोदितास्तत्र चक्रुस्ते विधिवत्क्रियाम्

ete cānye ca bahava āgatāśśivasannidhim mayā sunoditāstatra cakruste vidhivatkriyām

"-- these and many others came into Shiva's presence; well directed there by me, they carried out the rites according to due form."

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.102.56)

वेदोक्तविधिना सर्वे वेदवेदाङ्गपारगाः । रक्षां चक्रुर्महेशस्य कृत्वा कौतुकमङ्गलम्

vedoktavidhinā sarve vedavedāṅgapāragāḥ rakṣāṁ cakrurmaheśasya kṛtvā kautukamaṅgalam

"All of them, well versed in the Vedas and the Vedangas, performed the protective rite for Mahesha according to Vedic prescription, having tied the auspicious kautuka thread."

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.102.57)

ऋग्यजुस्सामसूक्तैस्तु तथा नानाविधैः परैः । मङ्गलानि च भूरीणि चक्रुः प्रीत्यर्षयोऽखिलाः

ṛgyajussāmasūktaistu tathā nānāvidhaiḥ paraiḥ maṅgalāni ca bhūrīṇi cakruḥ prītyarṣayo'khilāḥ

"With hymns of the Rig, Yajur, and Sama Vedas, and likewise with various other chants, all the sages, out of love, performed many auspicious rites."

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.102.58)

ग्रहाणां पूजनं प्रीत्या चक्रुस्ते शम्भुना मया । मण्डलस्थसुराणां च सर्वेषां विघ्नशान्तये

grahāṇāṁ pūjanaṁ prītyā cakruste śambhunā mayā maṇḍalasthasurāṇāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ vighnaśāntaye

"They, together with Shambhu and myself, performed with affection the worship of the planets, for the sake of quelling obstacles for all the gods present in the ritual diagram."

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.102.59)

ततश्शिवः सुसन्तुष्टः कृत्वा सर्वं यथोचितम् । लौकिकं वैदिकं कर्म ननाम च मुदा द्विजान्

tataśśivaḥ susantuṣṭaḥ kṛtvā sarvaṁ yathocitam laukikaṁ vaidikaṁ karma nanāma ca mudā dvijān

"Then Shiva, well satisfied, having duly performed all the rites -- both worldly and Vedic -- joyfully bowed to the brahmins."

Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.102.60)

अथ सर्वेश्वरो विप्रान्देवान्कृत्वा पुरस्सरान् । निस्ससार मुदा तस्मात्कैलासात्पर्वतोत्तमात्

atha sarveśvaro viprāndevānkṛtvā purassarān nissasāra mudā tasmātkailāsātparvatottamāt

"Then the Lord of all, placing the brahmins and the gods in front of him, set out joyfully from that Kailasa, best of mountains."

Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.102.61)

बहिः कैलासकुधराच्छम्भुस्तस्थौ मुदान्वितः । देवैः सह द्विजैश्चैव नानास्वीकारकः प्रभुः

bahiḥ kailāsakudharācchambhustasthau mudānvitaḥ devaiḥ saha dvijaiścaiva nānāsvīkārakaḥ prabhuḥ

"Outside the Kailasa mountain, Shambhu, filled with joy -- that Lord who takes on manifold forms -- remained there together with the gods and the brahmins."

Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.102.62)

तदोत्सवो महानासीत्तत्र देवादिभिः कृतः । सन्तुष्ट्यर्थं महेशस्य गानवाद्यसुनृत्यकः

tadotsavo mahānāsīttatra devādibhiḥ kṛtaḥ santuṣṭyarthaṁ maheśasya gānavādyasunṛtyakaḥ

"Then there was a great festival held there by the gods and others, for the satisfaction of Mahesha, filled with song, music, and fine dancing."
