Shatarudra Samhita · Chapter 14
The Grihapati Incarnation, Part 2
Verse 1 (shiva.shatarudra.14.1)
nandīśvara uvāca sa vipro gṛhamāgatya mahāharṣasamanvitaḥ priyāyai kathayāmāsa tadvṛttāntamaśeṣataḥ
Nandishvara said: That brahmin, having returned home, filled with great joy, told his beloved wife the entire account.
Verse 2 (shiva.shatarudra.14.2)
tacchrutvā viprapatnī sā mudaṁ prāpa śuciṣmatī atīva premasaṁyuktā praśaśaṁsa vidhiṁ nijam
Hearing that, the brahmin's wife Shuchishmati was filled with joy; overcome with love, she praised her own destiny.
Verse 3 (shiva.shatarudra.14.3)
atha kālena tadyoṣidantarvatnī babhūva ha vidhivad vihite tena garbhādhānākhyakarmaṇi
Then, in time, that woman became pregnant, after he had duly performed the rite called Garbhadhana.
Verse 4 (shiva.shatarudra.14.4)
tataḥ puṁsavanaṁ tena spandanātprāgvipaścitā gṛhyoktavidhinā samyak kṛtaṁ puṁstvavivṛddhaye
Then, by that wise man, before the quickening of the child, the Pumsavana rite was duly performed according to the Grihya-rite, for the increase of masculine vigor.
Verse 5 (shiva.shatarudra.14.5)
sīmanto’thāṣṭame māse garbharūpasamṛddhikṛt sukhaprasavasiddhau ca tenākari kriyāvidā
Then, in the eighth month, the Simantonnayana rite, which enriches the form of the embryo and ensures an easy delivery, was performed by that man skilled in the rites.
Verse 6 (shiva.shatarudra.14.6)
athātaḥ śubhatārāsu tārādhipavarānanaḥ kendre gurau śubhe lagne sugraheṣu yugeṣu ca
Then, under auspicious stars, with a moon-faced beauty like the lord of stars, with Jupiter in a Kendra, an angular house, in an auspicious ascendant, with well-placed planets and favorable conjunctions—
Verse 7 (shiva.shatarudra.14.7)
ariṣṭadīpanirvāṇaḥ sarvāriṣṭavināśakṛt tanayo nāma tasyāṁ tu śuciṣmatyāṁ babhūva ha
—a son was born to that Shuchishmati, one who extinguishes the flame of misfortune and destroys all ill omens.
Verse 8 (shiva.shatarudra.14.8)
śarvaḥ samastasukhado bhūrbhuvaḥsvarnnivāsinām gandhavāhanavāhāśca digvadhūrmukhavāsasaḥ
Sharva, the giver of complete happiness to the dwellers of the earth, the atmosphere, and heaven — the fragrant breeze blew gently, and the maidens of the directions seemed veiled in their own garments—
Verse 9 (shiva.shatarudra.14.9)
iṣṭagandhaprasūnaughairvavṛṣuste ghanāghanāḥ devadundubhayo neduḥ praseduḥ sarvato diśaḥ
—the clouds rained down showers of desired fragrances and flowers; the divine kettledrums resounded, and the directions on every side grew serene.
Verse 10 (shiva.shatarudra.14.10)
paritaḥ saritaḥ svacchā bhūtānāṁ mānasaiḥ saha tamo’tāmyattu nitarāṁ rajo’pi virajo’bhavat
All around, the rivers became clear, along with the minds of all beings; darkness withered away entirely, and even rajas, passion, became free of its own taint.
Verse 11 (shiva.shatarudra.14.11)
sattvāḥ sattvasamāyuktāḥ sudhāvṛṣṭirbabhūva vai kalyāṇī sarvathā vāṇī prāṇinaḥ priyavatyabhūt
All beings became filled with the quality of goodness; a rain of nectar fell; and speech, wholly auspicious, became dear to every living creature.
Verse 12 (shiva.shatarudra.14.12)
rambhāmukhyā apsaraso maṅgaladravyapāṇayaḥ vidyādharyaśca kinnaryastathāmaryaḥ sahasraśaḥ
The Apsarases headed by Rambha, holding auspicious articles in their hands, the Vidyadhari women, the Kinnaris, and thousands of goddesses—

—and the beautiful, sweet-voiced wives of the Gandharvas, Nagas, and Yakshas, singing auspicious songs, came there in great numbers.
Verse 14 (shiva.shatarudra.14.14)

Verse 17 (shiva.shatarudra.14.17)

sālaṅkāyanahārītau viśvāmitro’tha bhārgavaḥ mṛkaṇḍaḥ saha putreṇa parvato dārukastathā
—Salankayana, Harita, Vishvamitra, Bhargava, Mrikandu together with his son, Parvata, and Daruka—
Verse 20 (shiva.shatarudra.14.20)
dhaumyopamanyuvatsādyā munayo munikanyakāḥ tacchāntyarthaṁ samājagmurdhanyaṁ viśvānarāśramam
—Dhaumya, Upamanyu, Vatsa and other sages, together with the daughters of sages, all came for the sake of a peace-rite to the blessed hermitage of Vishvanara.
Verse 21 (shiva.shatarudra.14.21)

Brahma, together with Brihaspati, the god mounted on Garuda, Vishnu, and the Bull-bannered Lord together with Nandi and Bhringi, along with Gauri—
Verse 22 (shiva.shatarudra.14.22)
mahendramukhyā gīrvāṇā nāgāḥ pātālavāsinaḥ ratnānyādāya bahuśaḥ sasaritkā mahābdhayaḥ
—the gods headed by Mahendra, and the Nagas who dwell in the netherworld, and the great oceans together with their rivers, bringing many jewels—
Verse 23 (shiva.shatarudra.14.23)
sthāvarā jaṅgamaṁ rūpaṁ dhṛtvāyātāḥ sahasraśaḥ mahāmahotsave tasmin babhūvākālakaumudī
—even the immovable things assumed moving forms and came there by the thousands; at that great festival, an untimely moonlight of joy prevailed.
Verse 24 (shiva.shatarudra.14.24)
jātakarma svayaṁ tasya kṛtavānvidhirānataḥ śrutiṁ vicārya tadrūpaṁ nāmnā gṛhapatistvayam
Brahma himself, bowing down, performed the birth-rite, Jatakarma, for him; and, having considered the Vedic scripture and his form, declared that this one was, by name, Grihapati.
Verse 25 (shiva.shatarudra.14.25)
iti nāma dadau tasmai deyamekādaśe’hani nāmakarmavidhānena tadarthaṁ śrutimuccaran
Thus he gave him this name, to be bestowed on the eleventh day, by the rite of Namakarana, uttering the appropriate Vedic verse for that purpose.
Verse 26 (shiva.shatarudra.14.26)
caturnigamamantroktairāśīrbhirabhinandya ca samayāddhaṁ samāruhya sarveṣāṁ ca pitāmahaḥ
And, having congratulated him with blessings recited from the mantras of the four Vedas, and having, at the proper time, ascended his vehicle, the Grandsire of all, Brahma—
Verse 27 (shiva.shatarudra.14.27)
kṛtvā bālocitāṁ rakṣāṁ laukikīṁ gatimāśritaḥ āruhya yānaṁ svaṁ dhāma haro’pi hariṇā yayau
—having performed the protective rite befitting a child, and following the customary course, mounted his own vehicle and departed for his own abode; and Hara too, together with Hari, went to his own abode.
Verse 28 (shiva.shatarudra.14.28)
aho rūpamaho tejastvaho sarvāṅgalakṣaṇam aho śuciṣmatībhāgyamāvirāsītsvayaṁ haraḥ
'Ah, what beauty! Ah, what radiance! Ah, what auspicious marks upon every limb! Ah, what fortune for Shuchishmati, that Hara himself has appeared!' —
Verse 29 (shiva.shatarudra.14.29)
athavā kimidaṁ citraṁ śarvabhaktajaneṣvaho svayamāvirabhūd rudro yato rudrastadarcitaḥ
'Or rather, what wonder is this, indeed, among the devotees of Sharva? Rudra himself has appeared, because he was worshipped as Rudra.'
Verse 30 (shiva.shatarudra.14.30)
iti stuvantaste’nyo’nyaṁ samprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ viśvānaraṁ samāpṛcchya jagmuḥ sarve yathāgatam
Saying such things to one another, their bodies thrilling with joy, they all, having taken leave of Vishvanara, departed as they had come.
Verse 31 (shiva.shatarudra.14.31)
ataḥ putraṁ samīhante gṛhasthāśramavāsinaḥ putreṇa lokāñjayati śrutireṣā sanātanī
For this reason, those who dwell in the householder stage of life desire a son; 'through a son one conquers the worlds' — this is the eternal teaching of the Veda.
Verse 32 (shiva.shatarudra.14.32)
aputrasya gṛhaṁ śūnyamaputrasyārjanaṁ vṛthā aputrasya tapaśchinnaṁ no pavitratyaputrataḥ
For one without a son, the household is empty; for one without a son, all earning is in vain; for one without a son, austerity is cut short; sonlessness brings no purity.
Verse 33 (shiva.shatarudra.14.33)
na putrātparamo lābho na putrātparamaṁ sukham na putrātparamaṁ mitraṁ paratreha ca kutracit
There is no greater gain than a son, no greater happiness than a son; there is no friend greater than a son, either in this world or the next, anywhere at all.
Verse 34 (shiva.shatarudra.14.34)
niṣkramo’tha caturthe’sya māsi pitrā kṛto gṛhāt annaprāśanamabdārddhe cūḍābde cārthavatkṛtā
Then, in his fourth month, the Nishkramana rite, first taking outdoors, was performed by his father from the house; the Annaprashana, first feeding, at half a year; and the Chudakarana, tonsure, was duly performed at a year.
Verse 35 (shiva.shatarudra.14.35)
karṇavedhaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā śravaṇarkṣe sa karmavit brahmatejobhivṛddhyarthaṁ pañcame’bde vrataṁ dadau
Then, having performed the ear-piercing rite under the Shravana constellation, that knower of the sacred rites conferred the sacred-thread vow, Upanayana, in the fifth year, for the increase of his Vedic splendor.
Verse 36 (shiva.shatarudra.14.36)
upākarma tataḥ kṛtvā vedānadhyāpayatsudhīḥ tryabdaṁ vedānsa vidhinādhyaiṣṭa sāṅgapadakramān
Then, having performed the Upakarma rite, that wise man had him taught the Vedas; for three years he studied the Vedas, in due order, together with their auxiliary sciences, according to the prescribed method.
Verse 37 (shiva.shatarudra.14.37)
vidyājātaṁ samastaṁ ca sākṣimātraṁ gurormukhāt vinayādiguṇānāviṣkurvañjagrāha śaktimān
That powerful child grasped the entire body of knowledge merely by witnessing it once from the mouth of his teacher, manifesting the qualities of humility and the rest.
Verse 38 (shiva.shatarudra.14.38)
tato’tha navame varṣe pitroḥ śuśrūṣaṇe ratam vaiśvānaraṁ gṛhapatiṁ draṣṭumāyācca nāradaḥ
Then, in his ninth year, while he was devoted to serving his parents, Narada came to see Grihapati, the son of Vishvanara.
Verse 39 (shiva.shatarudra.14.39)
viśvānaroṭajaṁ prāpya devarṣistaṁ tu kautukī apṛcchatkuśalaṁ tatra gṛhītārghāsanaḥ kramāt
Having reached Vishvanara's hut, the divine sage, filled with curiosity, having duly received the offering of arghya and a seat, inquired there after his welfare.
Verse 40 (shiva.shatarudra.14.40)
tataḥ sarvaṁ ca tadbhāgyaṁ putradharmaṁ ca sammukhe viśvānaraṁ samavadatsmṛtvā śivapadāmbujam
Then, recalling the lotus feet of Shiva, he told Vishvanara, to his face, of his whole good fortune and the future dharma of his son.
Verse 41 (shiva.shatarudra.14.41)
nandīśvara uvāca ityukto muninā bālaḥ pitrorājñāmavāpya saḥ praṇamya nāradaṁ śrīmān bhaktyā prahva upāviśata
Nandishvara said: Thus addressed by the sage, the boy, having received his parents' permission, that glorious one, bowing to Narada with devotion, humbly sat down.
Verse 42 (shiva.shatarudra.14.42)
nārada uvāca vaiśvānara samabhyehi mamotsaṅge niṣīda bhoḥ lakṣaṇāni parīkṣe’haṁ pāṇiṁ darśaya dakṣiṇam
Narada said: O son of Vishvanara, come here, sit upon my lap; I wish to examine your auspicious marks — show me your right hand.
Verse 43 (shiva.shatarudra.14.43)
tato dṛṣṭvā tu sarvaṁ hi tālujihvādi nāradaḥ viśvānaraṁ samavadacchivapreraṇayā sudhīḥ
Then, having examined everything — his palate, tongue, and the rest — Narada, wise and moved by Shiva's inspiration, spoke to Vishvanara.
Verse 44 (shiva.shatarudra.14.44)
nārada uvāca viśvānara mune vacmi śṛṇu putrāṅkamādarāt sarvāṅgasvaṅkavānputro mahālakṣaṇavānayam
Narada said: O sage Vishvanara, I shall tell you; listen respectfully regarding your son's marks. This son bears auspicious marks on every limb; he is endowed with great, auspicious characteristics.
Verse 45 (shiva.shatarudra.14.45)
kintu sarvaguṇopetaṁ sarvalakṣaṇalakṣitam sampūrṇanirmalakalaṁ pālayedvidhuvadvidhiḥ
But may Fate protect him — one endowed with every virtue, marked by every auspicious sign, complete and spotless as the full moon with all its digits.
Verse 46 (shiva.shatarudra.14.46)
tasmātsarvaprayatnena rakṣaṇīyastvasau śiśuḥ guṇo’pi doṣatāṁ yāti vakrībhūte vidhātari
Therefore this child should be protected with every effort; for even a virtue can turn into a fault when Fate turns adverse.
Verse 47 (shiva.shatarudra.14.47)
śaṅke’sya dvādaśe varṣe pratyūho vidyudagnitaḥ ityuktvā nārado’gacchaddevalokaṁ yathāgatam
I suspect that in his twelfth year an obstacle will come to him from lightning-fire. Having said this, Narada departed for the world of the gods, as he had come.
