Shatarudra Samhita · Chapter 15
The Grihapati Incarnation, Part 3
Verse 1 (shiva.shatarudra.15.1)
nandīśvara uvāca viśvānaraḥ sapatnīkaḥ tacchrutvā nāraderitam tadevaṁ manyamāno’bhūdvajrapātaṁ sudāruṇam
Nandishvara said: Vishvanara, together with his wife, having heard what Narada had told, came to regard it as certain as a most terrible thunderbolt about to fall.
Verse 2 (shiva.shatarudra.15.2)
hā hato’smīti vacasā hṛdayaṁ samatāḍayat mūrcchāmavāpa mahatīṁ putraśokasamākulaḥ
Crying 'Alas, I am ruined!' he struck his own heart with these words, and, overwhelmed with grief for his son, fell into a deep swoon.
Verse 3 (shiva.shatarudra.15.3)
śuciṣmatyapi duḥkhārtā rurodātīva dussaham atisvareṇa hārāvairatyantaṁ vyākulendriyā
Shuchishmati too, stricken with sorrow, wept most unbearably, with loud lamentations, her senses utterly distraught.
Verse 4 (shiva.shatarudra.15.4)
śrutvārtanādamiti viśvanaro’pi mohaṁ hitvotthitaḥ kimiti kiṁ tviti kiṁ kimetat uccairvadan gṛhapatiḥ kva sa me bahisthaḥ prāṇo’ntarātmanilayassakalendriyeśaḥ
Hearing the cry of anguish, Vishvanara too, shaking off his swoon, rose up crying, 'What is it? What is it? What, oh what has happened?' And Grihapati himself called out aloud: 'Where is he, my very life-breath dwelling outside me, though he abides within me as the lord of all my senses?'
Verse 5 (shiva.shatarudra.15.5)
Then, seeing his parents overwhelmed with great sorrow, that child Grihapati, born of a portion of Shankara, smiled and spoke.
Verse 6 (shiva.shatarudra.15.6)
gṛhapatiruvāca he mātastāta kiṁ jātaṁ kāraṇaṁ tadvadādhunā kimarthaṁ rudito’tyarthaṁ trāsastādṛk kuto hi vām
Grihapati said: O mother, O father, what has happened? Tell me the reason now; why do you weep so excessively? Wherefore has such terror come upon you both?
Verse 7 (shiva.shatarudra.15.7)
na māṁ kṛtavapustrāṇaṁ bhavaccaraṇareṇubhiḥ kālaḥ kalayituṁ śakto varākī cañcalālpikā
Death, that wretched, fickle, insignificant thing, is not able to touch me, whose body has been made a protected refuge by the dust of your feet.
Verse 8 (shiva.shatarudra.15.8)
pratijñāṁ śṛṇutāṁ tātau yadi vāṁ tanayo hyaham kariṣye’haṁ tathā yena mṛtyustrasto bhaviṣyati
Hear my vow, O parents both — if indeed I am your son, I shall act in such a way that Death himself shall become afraid.
Verse 9 (shiva.shatarudra.15.9)
mṛtyuñjayaṁ samārādhya sarvajñaṁ sarvadaṁ satām japiṣyāmi mahākālaṁ satyaṁ tātau vadāmyaham
Worshipping Mrityunjaya, the all-knowing, the giver of everything to the virtuous, I shall recite the mantra of Mahakala; I speak the truth, O my parents.
Verse 10 (shiva.shatarudra.15.10)
nandīśvara uvāca iti śrutvā vacastasya jāritau dvijadampatī akālāmṛtavarṣaughairgatatāpau tadocatuḥ
Nandishvara said: Hearing his words, that grieving brahmin couple, as if by a sudden untimely shower of nectar, had their torment removed, and then spoke.
Verse 11 (shiva.shatarudra.15.11)
dvijadampatī ūcatuḥ punarbrūhi punarbrūhi kīdṛk kīdṛk punarvada kālaḥ kalayituṁ nālaṁ varākī cañcalāsti kā
The brahmin couple said: Say it again, say it again — how, how? Tell us once more! What wretched, fickle thing is not able to touch you?
Verse 12 (shiva.shatarudra.15.12)
āvayostāpanāśāya mahopāyastvayeritaḥ mṛtyuñjayākhyadevasya samārādhanalakṣaṇaḥ
For the removal of our torment, you have spoken of a great means, consisting in the worship of the god called Mrityunjaya.
Verse 13 (shiva.shatarudra.15.13)
tadvacca śaraṇaṁ śambhornātaḥ parataraṁ hi tat manorathapathātītakāriṇaḥ pāpahāriṇaḥ
And indeed there is no refuge higher than that of Shambhu, who accomplishes what lies beyond the path of any desire, and who takes away sin.
Verse 14 (shiva.shatarudra.15.14)
kiṁ na śrutaṁ tvayā tāta śvetaketuṁ yathā purā pāśitaṁ kālapāśena rarakṣa tripurāntakaḥ
Have you not heard, my child, how of old, when Shvetaketu was bound by the noose of Death, the Destroyer of the Three Cities protected him?
Verse 15 (shiva.shatarudra.15.15)
śilādatanayaṁ mṛtyugrastamaṣṭābdamātrakam śivo nijajanaṁ cakre nandinaṁ viśvanandinam
How Shiva made Nandi, the son of Shilada, seized by death at merely eight years of age, his own — the one who brings joy to the whole universe?
Verse 16 (shiva.shatarudra.15.16)
kṣīrodamathanodbhūtaṁ pralayānalasannibham pītvā hālāhalaṁ ghoramarakṣadbhuvanatrayam
How, drinking the terrible Halahala poison that arose from the churning of the ocean of milk, resembling the fire of dissolution, he protected the three worlds?
Verse 17 (shiva.shatarudra.15.17)
jalandharaṁ mahādarpaṁ hṛtatrailokyasampadam rucirāṅguṣṭharekhotthacakreṇa nijaghāna yaḥ
He who slew Jalandhara, of great pride, who had seized the wealth of the three worlds, with the discus that arose from the line traced by his own beautiful thumb?
Verse 18 (shiva.shatarudra.15.18)
ya ekeṣunipātotthajvalanaistripurampurā trailokyaiśvaryasammūḍhaṁ śoṣayāmāsa bhānunā
He who, of old, with the flames arising from a single arrow's fall, dried up Tripura, deluded by the glory of the three worlds, together with the sun?
Verse 19 (shiva.shatarudra.15.19)
kāmaṁ dṛṣṭinipātena trailokyavijayorjitam nināyānaṅgapadavīṁ vīkṣyamāṇeṣvajādiṣu
He who, with a mere fall of his glance, reduced Kama, mighty from his conquest of the three worlds, to the state of the Bodiless One, even as Brahma and the other gods looked on?
Verse 20 (shiva.shatarudra.15.20)
taṁ brahmādyaikakartāraṁ meghavāhanamacyutam prayāhi putra śaraṇaṁ viśvarakṣāmaṇiṁ śivam
Go, my son, for refuge to that Shiva — the sole maker of Brahma and the rest, borne on clouds, imperishable, the very jewel of protection for the universe.
Verse 21 (shiva.shatarudra.15.21)
nandīśvara uvāca pitroranujñāṁ prāpyeti praṇamya caraṇau tayoḥ prādakṣiṇyamupāvṛtya bahvāśvāsya viniryayau
Nandishvara said: Having obtained his parents' permission, he bowed at their feet, circumambulated them, and, having comforted them at length, set out.
Verse 22 (shiva.shatarudra.15.22)
samprāpya kāśīṁ duṣprāpāṁ brahmanārāyaṇādibhiḥ mahāsaṁvarttasantāpahantrīṁ viśveśapālitām
Having reached Kashi, hard to attain even for Brahma, Narayana, and the rest, the destroyer of the great affliction of the cosmic dissolution, protected by Vishvesha.
Verse 23 (shiva.shatarudra.15.23)
svardhunyā hārayaṣṭyeva rājitāṁ kaṇṭhabhūmiṣu vicitraguṇaśālinyā harapatnyā virājitām
Adorned upon its throat-lands, as it were, by the celestial river, the Ganga, like a string of pearls, and glorified by the wife of Hara, possessed of wondrous virtues.
Verse 24 (shiva.shatarudra.15.24)
tatra prāpya sa vipreśaḥ prāgyayau maṇikarṇikām tatra snātvā vidhānena dṛṣṭvā viśveśvaraṁ prabhum
Having arrived there, that best of brahmins first went to Manikarnika; and, bathing there according to the rite, he beheld the Lord Vishveshvara.
Verse 25 (shiva.shatarudra.15.25)
sāñjalirnataśīrṣo’sau mahānandānvitaḥ sudhīḥ trailokyaprāṇasantrāṇakāriṇaṁ praṇanāma ha
With joined palms and bowed head, that wise one, filled with great joy, bowed down to him, the protector of the life of all the three worlds.
Verse 26 (shiva.shatarudra.15.26)
ālokyālokya talliṅgaṁ tutoṣa hṛdaye muhuḥ paramānandakandāḍhyaṁ sphuṭametanna saṁśayaḥ
Beholding that linga again and again, his heart rejoiced repeatedly, full of the very root of supreme bliss — this is plain, without doubt.
Verse 27 (shiva.shatarudra.15.27)
aho na matto dhanyo’sti trailokye sacarācare yadadrākṣiṣamadyāhaṁ śrīmadviśveśvaraṁ vibhum
'Ah, there is none more blessed than I in the three worlds with all their moving and unmoving things, in that today I have beheld the glorious, all-pervading Vishveshvara.'
Verse 28 (shiva.shatarudra.15.28)
mama bhāgyodayāyaiva nāradena maharṣiṇā purāgatya tathoktaṁ yatkṛtakṛtyo’smyahaṁ tataḥ
'It was for the very rise of my good fortune that the great sage Narada came before and spoke as he did; for this, I have accomplished my purpose.'
Verse 29 (shiva.shatarudra.15.29)
nandīśvara uvāca ityānandāmṛtarasairvidhāya sa hi pāraṇam tataḥ śubhe’hni saṁsthāpya liṅgaṁ sarvahitapradam
Nandishvara said: Thus, having broken his fast with the nectar-essence of bliss, he then, on an auspicious day, established a linga that grants welfare to all.
Verse 30 (shiva.shatarudra.15.30)
jagrāha niyamānghorān duṣkarānakṛtātmabhiḥ aṣṭottaraśataiḥ kumbhaiḥ pūrṇairgaṅgā’mbhasā śubhaiḥ
He undertook terrible disciplines, difficult for the unrefined to perform — with one hundred and eight auspicious pitchers filled with the water of the Ganga.
Verse 31 (shiva.shatarudra.15.31)
saṁsnāpya vāsasā pūtaiḥ pūtātmā pratyahaṁ śivam nīlotpalamayīṁ mālāṁ samarpayati so’nvaham
Bathing Shiva each day, with garments made pure, that pure-souled one offers, day after day, a garland made of blue lotuses.
Verse 32 (shiva.shatarudra.15.32)
aṣṭādhikasahasraistu sumanobhirvinirmitām sa pakṣe vātha vā māse kandamūlaphalāśanaḥ
—made of one thousand and eight blossoms; for a fortnight, or for a month, he lived on roots, bulbs, and fruits.
Verse 33 (shiva.shatarudra.15.33)
śīrṇaparṇāśanairdhīraḥ ṣaṇmāsaṁ sambabhūva saḥ ṣaṇmāsaṁ vāyubhakṣo’bhūtṣaṇmāsaṁ jalabindubhuk
That steadfast one lived for six months on withered leaves alone; for six months he subsisted on air; for six months he took only drops of water.
Verse 34 (shiva.shatarudra.15.34)
evaṁ varṣadvayaṁ tasya vyatikrāntaṁ mahātmanaḥ śivaikamanaso viprāstapyamānasya nārada
Thus, O Narada, two years passed for that great soul, the brahmin whose mind was fixed on Shiva alone, as he practiced austerity.
Verse 35 (shiva.shatarudra.15.35)
janmato dvādaśe varṣe tadvaco nāraderitam satyaṁ kariṣyanniva tamabhyagātkuliśāyudhaḥ
In the twelfth year from his birth, as though to make Narada's word come true, the wielder of the thunderbolt, Indra, approached him.
Verse 36 (shiva.shatarudra.15.36)
uvāca ca varaṁ brūhi dadmi tvanmanasi sthitam ahaṁ śatakraturvipra prasanno’smi śubhavrataiḥ
And he said: 'Ask a boon; I shall grant whatever is in your mind. I am Shatakratu, O brahmin; I am pleased by your auspicious vows.'
Verse 37 (shiva.shatarudra.15.37)
nandīśvara uvāca ityākarṇya mahendrasya vākyaṁ munikumārakaḥ uvāca madhuraṁ dhīraḥ kīrtayanmadhurākṣaram
Nandishvara said: Hearing the words of great Indra, that son of the sage, steadfast, spoke sweetly, uttering gentle words.
Verse 38 (shiva.shatarudra.15.38)
gṛhapatiruvāca maghavan vṛtraśatro tvāṁ jāne kuliśapāṇinam nāhaṁ vṛṇe varaṁ tvattaḥ śaṅkaro varado’sti me
Grihapati said: O Maghavan, foe of Vritra, I recognize you as the wielder of the thunderbolt; but I choose no boon from you — Shankara alone is the giver of boons to me.
Verse 39 (shiva.shatarudra.15.39)
indra uvāca na mattaḥ śaṅkarastvanyo devadevo’smyahaṁ śiśo vihāya bāliśatvaṁ tvaṁ varaṁ yācasva mā ciram
Indra said: There is no god other than me — I am indeed the God of gods, O child! Set aside your childishness, and ask your boon without delay.
Verse 40 (shiva.shatarudra.15.40)
gṛhapatiruvāca gacchāhalyāpate’sādho gotrāre pākaśāsana na prārthaye paśupateranyaṁ devāntaraṁ sphuṭam
Grihapati said: Begone, O wicked husband of Ahalya, O foe of the mountains, O chastiser of Paka! I clearly seek no other god apart from Pashupati.
Verse 41 (shiva.shatarudra.15.41)
nandīśvara uvāca iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā krodhasaṁraktalocanaḥ udyamya kuliśaṁ ghoraṁ bhīṣayāmāsa bālakam
Nandishvara said: Hearing his words, his eyes red with rage, Indra, raising his terrible thunderbolt, sought to frighten the boy.
Verse 42 (shiva.shatarudra.15.42)
sa dṛṣṭvā bālako vajraṁ vidyujjvālāsamākulam smarannāradavākyaṁ ca mumūrccha bhayavihvalaḥ
That boy, seeing the thunderbolt ablaze with lightning-flames, and remembering Narada's words, overwhelmed with fear, fell into a swoon.
Verse 43 (shiva.shatarudra.15.43)
atha gaurīpatiḥ śambhurāvirāsīttamonudaḥ uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha bhadraṁ te sparśaiḥ sañjīvayanniva
Then Shambhu, the husband of Gauri, the dispeller of darkness, appeared, and, as if reviving him with his very touch, said: 'Arise, arise! Blessings upon you!'
Verse 44 (shiva.shatarudra.15.44)
unmīlya netrakamale supte iva dinakṣaye apaśyadagre cotthāya śambhumarkaśatādhikam
Opening his lotus eyes, as one waking from sleep at the day's end, and rising, he beheld before him Shambhu, brighter than a hundred suns.
Verse 45 (shiva.shatarudra.15.45)
bhāle locanamālokya kaṇṭhekālaṁ vṛṣadhvajam vāmāṅgasanniviṣṭādritanayaṁ candraśekharam
He beheld the eye upon his forehead, the dark mark upon his throat, the Bull-bannered one, with the daughter of the mountain seated on his left side, the moon-crested Lord.
Verse 46 (shiva.shatarudra.15.46)
kapardena virājantaṁ triśūlājagavāyudham sphuratkarpūragaurāṅgaṁ pariṇaddhagajājinam
Resplendent with his matted crown, armed with the trident and the bow Ajagava, his body radiant and white as camphor, wrapped in an elephant hide.
Verse 47 (shiva.shatarudra.15.47)
parijñāya mahādevaṁ guruvākyata āgamāt harṣabāṣpākulāsannakaṇṭharomāñcakañcukaḥ
Recognizing him as Mahadeva, from his teacher's words and from the scriptures, his throat choked with tears of joy, his body clad, as it were, in a garment of thrilled hair.
Verse 48 (shiva.shatarudra.15.48)
kṣaṇaṁ ca girivattasthau citrakṛtrimaputrakaḥ yathā tathā susampanno vismṛtyātmānameva ca
For a moment he stood still as a mountain, like a painted, lifeless doll, thus perfectly overcome, forgetting even his own self.
Verse 49 (shiva.shatarudra.15.49)
When for a while he was unable either to praise him, or to bow to him, or to say anything at all, then Shankara, smiling, spoke.
Verse 50 (shiva.shatarudra.15.50)
īśvara uvāca śiśo gṛhapate śakrādvajrodyatakarādaho jñātaṁ bhīto’si mā bhaiṣīrjijñāsā te mayā kṛtā
Ishvara said: O child Grihapati, ah, I know you were frightened by Shakra with his upraised thunderbolt-hand — do not fear; it was I who made this test of you.
Verse 51 (shiva.shatarudra.15.51)
mama bhaktasya no śakro na vajraṁ cāntako’pi ca prabhavedindrarūpeṇa mayaiva tvaṁ bibhīṣitaḥ
Neither Shakra, nor the thunderbolt, nor even Death himself has power over my devotee; it was I myself, in the form of Indra, who frightened you.
Verse 52 (shiva.shatarudra.15.52)
varaṁ dadāmi te bhadra tvamagnipadabhāgbhava sarveṣāmeva devānāṁ varadastvaṁ bhaviṣyasi
I grant you a boon, O blessed one — become the possessor of the office of Agni; you shall become a granter of boons to all the gods.
Verse 53 (shiva.shatarudra.15.53)
sarveṣāmeva bhūtānāṁ tvamagne’ntaścaro bhava dharmarājendrayormadhye digīśo rājyamāpnuhi
O Fire, become the one who moves within all beings; obtain your kingdom as lord of a direction, between Dharma and Indra.
Verse 54 (shiva.shatarudra.15.54)
tvayedaṁ sthāpitaṁ liṅgaṁ tava nāmnā bhaviṣyati agnīśvara iti khyātaṁ sarvatejovibṛṁhaṇam
This linga established by you shall be known by your own name, famed as 'Agnishvara,' the augmenter of all splendor.
Verse 55 (shiva.shatarudra.15.55)
agnīśvarasya bhaktānāṁ na bhayaṁ vidyudagnibhiḥ agnimāndyabhayaṁ naiva nākālamaraṇaṁ kvacit
For the devotees of Agnishvara there is no fear from lightning or fire, no fear of digestive weakness, and never any untimely death.
Verse 56 (shiva.shatarudra.15.56)
agnīśvaraṁ samabhyarcya kāśyāṁ sarvasamṛddhidam anyatrāpi mṛto daivādvahniloke mahīyate
Having worshipped Agnishvara at Kashi, the giver of every prosperity, one who dies elsewhere too, by fate, is exalted in the world of Fire.
Verse 57 (shiva.shatarudra.15.57)
nandīśvara uvāca ityuktvānīya tadbandhūnpitrośca paripaśyatoḥ dikpatitve’bhiṣicyāgniṁ tatra liṅge śivo’viśat
Nandishvara said: Having spoken thus, and having brought his kinsfolk there, while his parents looked on, Shiva consecrated Agni to the lordship of a quarter, and then entered into that linga.
Verse 58 (shiva.shatarudra.15.58)
itthamagnyavatāraste varṇito me janārdanaḥ nāmnā gṛhapatistāta śaṅkarasya parātmanaḥ
Thus, my child, I have described to you this incarnation as Fire — the reliever of all people, known by the name Grihapati, that of the Supreme Self, Shankara.
Verse 59 (shiva.shatarudra.15.59)
citrahotrapurī ramyā sukhadārciṣmatī varā jātavedasi ye bhaktā te tatra nivasanti vai
The beautiful city called Chitrahotra-puri, the excellent, delightful, radiant one, giver of happiness — those devoted to Jatavedas, Agni, dwell there indeed.
Verse 60 (shiva.shatarudra.15.60)
agnipraveśaṁ ye kuryurdṛḍhasattvā jitendriyāḥ striyo vā sattvasampannāste sarve’pyagnitejasaḥ
Those of firm resolve and mastered senses who enter fire, whether men or women endowed with such fortitude — all of them share in the splendor of Agni.
Verse 61 (shiva.shatarudra.15.61)
agnihotraratā viprāḥ sthāpitā brahmacāriṇaḥ paścāgnivarttino’pyevamagniloke’gnivarcasaḥ
Brahmins devoted to the Agnihotra rite, celibate students established in their vow, and likewise those who practice the discipline of the five fires — all attain, in the world of Fire, the very splendor of Fire.
Verse 62 (shiva.shatarudra.15.62)
śīte śītāpanuttyai yastvedhobhārānprayacchati kuryādagnīṣṭikāṁ vātha sa vasedagnisannidhau
Whoever, in the cold, gives loads of firewood to dispel the cold, or performs the Agnishtika rite, shall dwell in the presence of Agni.
Verse 63 (shiva.shatarudra.15.63)
anāthasyāgnisaṁskāraṁ yaḥ kuryācchraddhayānvitaḥ aśaktaḥ prerayedanyaṁ so’gniloke mahīyate
Whoever, filled with faith, performs the fire-rite, cremation, for one who has no protector, or, if unable himself, causes another to perform it, is exalted in the world of Fire.
Verse 64 (shiva.shatarudra.15.64)
agnireko dvijātīnāṁ niḥśreyasakaraḥ paraḥ gururdevo vrataṁ tīrthaṁ sarvamagnirviniścitam
Fire alone, for the twice-born, is the supreme bringer of the highest good; teacher, deity, vow, sacred crossing — all, it is firmly held, is Fire.
Verse 65 (shiva.shatarudra.15.65)
apāvanāni sarvāṇi vahnisaṁsargataḥ kṣaṇāt pāvanāni bhavantyeva tasmādyaḥ pāvakaḥ smṛtaḥ
All impure things, the very instant they come into contact with fire, become pure indeed; for this reason he is remembered as Pavaka, the Purifier.
Verse 66 (shiva.shatarudra.15.66)
antarātmā hyayaṁ sākṣānniścayo hyāśuśukṣaṇiḥ māṁsagrāsānpacetkukṣau strīṇāṁ no māṁsapeśikām
This same fire is indeed, without doubt, the very inner Self, the swift-blazing one; within the belly it cooks the morsels of food eaten — though it is not what forms the flesh-mass within a woman's womb.
Verse 67 (shiva.shatarudra.15.67)
taijasī śāmbhavī mūrtiḥ pratyakṣā dahanātmikā kartrī hartrī pālayitrī vinaitāṁ kiṁ vilokyate
This fiery form of Shambhu, visible to the eye, of the nature of burning — it creates, it destroys, it sustains; without it, what indeed could be seen?
Verse 68 (shiva.shatarudra.15.68)
citrabhānurayaṁ sākṣānnetraṁ tribhuvaneśituḥ andhe tamomaye loke vinainaṁ kaḥ prakāśanaḥ
This Chitrabhanu, Fire, is indeed the very eye of the Lord of the three worlds; in a world blind and full of darkness, who but he could give light?
Verse 69 (shiva.shatarudra.15.69)
dhūpapradīpanaivedyapayodadhighṛtaikṣavam etadbhuktaṁ niṣevante sarve divi divaukasaḥ
Incense, lamp-offerings, food-offerings, milk, curd, ghee, and sugarcane — once these have been consumed by fire in the offering, all the dwellers of heaven partake of them in heaven.
