Shatarudra Samhita · Chapter 39
The Kirata Avatara: The Slaying of the Demon Muka
Verse 1 (shiva.shatarudra.39.1)
nandīśvara uvāca snānaṁ sa vidhivatkṛtvā nyāsādi vidhivattathā dhyānaṁ śivasya sadbhaktyā vyāsoktaṁ yattathākarot
Nandishvara said: Having duly performed his ablutions, and duly the rites of nyasa and the rest, he carried out the meditation on Shiva with true devotion, exactly as Vyasa had prescribed.
Verse 2 (shiva.shatarudra.39.2)
ekapādatalenaiva tiṣṭhanmunivaro yathā sūrye dṛṣṭiṁ nibadhyaikāṁ mantramāvartayan sthitaḥ
Standing on the sole of one foot alone, as a foremost sage might, his gaze fixed steadily upon the sun, he remained there, repeating the mantra again and again.
Verse 3 (shiva.shatarudra.39.3)
tapastepeti samprītyā saṁsmaranmanasā śivam pañcākṣaraṁ manuṁ śambhorjapansarvottamottamam
With great love he performed his austerity, remembering Shiva in his mind, chanting Shambhu's five-syllabled mantra, most excellent of all.
Verse 4 (shiva.shatarudra.39.4)
tapasasteja evāsīdyathā devā visismiyuḥ punaścaiva śivaṁ yātāḥ pratyūcuste samāhitāḥ
Such was the radiance of his austerity that the gods were astonished; and, going once more to Shiva, they, with composed minds, spoke to him.
Verse 5 (shiva.shatarudra.39.5)
devā ūcuḥ nareṇaikena sarveśa tvadarthe tapa āhitam yadicchati naraḥ so'yaṁ kinna yacchati tatprabho
The gods said: "O Lord of all, a single man has undertaken this austerity for you alone; whatever that man desires, Lord, why do you not grant it to him?"
Verse 6 (shiva.shatarudra.39.6)
nandīśvara uvāca ityuktvā tu stutiṁ cakrurvividhāṁ te tadā surāḥ tatpādayordṛśaḥ kṛtvā tatra tasthuḥ sthirādhayaḥ
Nandishvara said: Having said this, the gods then offered manifold praise; and, fixing their gaze upon his feet, they stood there, their minds steadfast.
Verse 7 (shiva.shatarudra.39.7)
śivastu tadvacaḥ śrutvā mahāprabhurudāradhīḥ suvihasya prasannātmā surānvacanamabravīt
Hearing these words, Shiva, that great Lord of noble mind, smiling graciously, his heart well pleased, spoke thus to the gods.
Verse 8 (shiva.shatarudra.39.8)
śiva uvāca svasthānaṁ gacchata surāḥ sarve satyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ sarvathāhaṁ kariṣyāmi kāryaṁ vo nātra saṁśaya
Shiva said: "Go, all you gods, to your own abodes; this is true, have no doubt of it. I shall accomplish your purpose in every way — there is no doubt in this."
Verse 9 (shiva.shatarudra.39.9)
nandīśvara uvāca tacchrutvā śambhuvacanaṁ niścayaṁ paramaṁ gatāḥ parāvṛtya gatāḥ sarve svasthānaṁ te hi nirjarāḥ
Nandishvara said: Hearing Shambhu's words, and now fully assured, all those immortals turned back and went to their own abodes.
Verse 10 (shiva.shatarudra.39.10)
etasminnantare daityo mūkanāmāgatastadā saukaraṁ rūpamāsthāya preṣitaśca durātmanā
Meanwhile there came a demon named Muka, having taken the form of a wild boar, sent there by that evil-minded one —
Verse 11 (shiva.shatarudra.39.11)
duryodhanena viprendra māyinā cārjunaṁ tadā yatrārjunaḥ sthitaścāsīttena mārgeṇa vai tadā
— sent, O foremost of brahmins, by the deceitful Duryodhana against Arjuna, along that very path where Arjuna then stood.
Verse 12 (shiva.shatarudra.39.12)
śṛṅgāṇi parvatasyaiva cchindanvṛkṣānanekaśaḥ śabdaṁ ca vividhaṁ kurvannativegena saṁyutaḥ
Splitting the very peaks of the mountain and many trees, making manifold sounds, endowed with tremendous speed.
Verse 13 (shiva.shatarudra.39.13)
arjuno'pi ca taṁ dṛṣṭvā mūkanāmāsuraṁ tadā smṛtvā śivapadāmbhojaṁ vicāre tatparo'bhavat
Arjuna too, seeing that demon named Muka, and remembering Shiva's lotus feet, became absorbed in deliberation.
Verse 14 (shiva.shatarudra.39.14)
arjuna uvāca ko'yaṁ vā kuta āyāti krūrakarmā ca dṛśyate mamāniṣṭaṁ dhruvaṁ kartuṁ samāgacchatyasaṁśayam
Arjuna said: "Who is this, and whence does he come? He appears to be of cruel deed; without doubt he comes intending some harm to me."
Verse 15 (shiva.shatarudra.39.15)
mamaivaṁ mana āyāti śatrureva na saṁśayaḥ mayā vinihatāḥ pūrvamaneke daityadānavāḥ
"This thought alone comes to my mind — he is without doubt an enemy. Many demons and danavas have been slain by me before now."
Verse 16 (shiva.shatarudra.39.16)
tadīyaḥ kaścidāyāti vairaṁ sādhayituṁ punaḥ athavā ca sakhā kaścid duryodhanahitāvahaḥ
"Some kinsman of theirs has come again to settle that old enmity; or else this may be some friend acting for Duryodhana's benefit."
Verse 17 (shiva.shatarudra.39.17)
yasmindṛṣṭe prasīdetsvaṁ manaḥ sa hitakṛd dhruvam yasmindṛṣṭe tadeva syādākulaṁ śatrureva saḥ
"He at whose sight one's own heart grows glad is surely a well-wisher; he at whose sight the heart grows troubled — he indeed is the enemy."
Verse 18 (shiva.shatarudra.39.18)
ācāraḥ kulamākhyāti vapurākhyāti bhojanam vacanaṁ śrutamākhyāti snehamākhyāti locanam
"Conduct betrays one's lineage; the body betrays one's diet; speech betrays what has been learned; the eyes betray affection."
Verse 19 (shiva.shatarudra.39.19)
ākāreṇa tathā gatyā ceṣṭayā bhāṣitairapi netravaktravikārābhyāṁ jñāyate'ntarhitaṁ manaḥ
"By outward form, by gait, by gesture, and by speech, and by the changes in eye and face, the hidden mind becomes known."
Verse 20 (shiva.shatarudra.39.20)
ujjvalaṁ sarasaṁ caiva vakramāraktakaṁ tathā netraṁ caturvidhaṁ proktaṁ tasya bhāvaṁ pṛthagbudhāḥ
"The eye is said to be of four kinds: bright, moist, sidelong, and reddened; the wise, by these, discern its differing states."
Verse 21 (shiva.shatarudra.39.21)
ujjvalaṁ mitrasaṁyoge sarasaṁ putradarśane vakraṁ ca kāminīyoge āraktaṁ śatrudarśane
"Bright, at meeting a friend; moist, at the sight of a son; sidelong, when united with one's beloved; reddened, at the sight of an enemy."
Verse 22 (shiva.shatarudra.39.22)
asminmama tu sarvāṇi kaluṣānīndriyāṇi ca ayaṁ śatrurbhavedeva māraṇīyo na saṁśayaḥ
"In this case, all my own senses grow troubled; this one must surely be an enemy, and deserves to be slain — of this there is no doubt."
Verse 23 (shiva.shatarudra.39.23)
gurośca vacanaṁ me'dya vartate duḥkhadastvayā hantavyaḥ sarvathā rājannātra kāryā vicāraṇā
"My Guru's own word stands before me today — that whoever brings sorrow must, O king, in every case, be slain; there is no need to deliberate further on this."
Verse 24 (shiva.shatarudra.39.24)
etadarthaṁ tvāyudhāni mama caiva na saṁśayaḥ vicāryeti ca tatraiva bāṇaṁ saṁsthāya saṁsthitaḥ
"For this very purpose, without doubt, my weapons exist." Having thus resolved, standing there, he fixed his arrow to the bow and stood ready.
Verse 25 (shiva.shatarudra.39.25)
etasminnantare tatra rakṣārthaṁ hyarjunasya vai tadbhakteśca parīkṣārthaṁ śaṅkaro bhaktavatsalaḥ
Meanwhile, for Arjuna's protection, and to test his devotion, Shankara, the cherisher of devotees —
Verse 26 (shiva.shatarudra.39.26)
vidagdhabhillarūpaṁ hi gaṇaiḥ sārdhaṁ mahādbhutam tasya daityasya nāśārthaṁ drutaṁ kṛtvā samāgataḥ
— swiftly took on the most wondrous form of a skilled forest hunter, together with his ganas, and came there for the destruction of that demon.
Verse 27 (shiva.shatarudra.39.27)
baddhakacchaśca vallībhirbaddhevā keśān harastadā śarīre śvetarekhāśca dhanurbāṇayutaḥ svayam
His garment tucked up and bound with creepers, his hair bound likewise, his body marked with white stripes, Hara himself, bearing bow and arrows —
Verse 28 (shiva.shatarudra.39.28)
bāṇānāṁ tūṇakaṁ pṛṣṭhe dhṛtvā vai sa jagāma ha gaṇaścaiva tathā jāto bhillarājo'bhavacchivaḥ
Carrying a quiver of arrows on his back, he set out thus; and his own gana likewise became, in that same guise, the king of the Bhillas — this was Shiva himself.
Verse 29 (shiva.shatarudra.39.29)
śabdāṁśca vividhānkṛtvā niryayau vāhinīpatiḥ sūkarasya sasārātha śabdaśca pradiśo daśa
Making cries of many kinds, that lord of a host set out, and pursued the boar, his cries spreading through all ten directions.
Verse 30 (shiva.shatarudra.39.30)
vanecareṇa śabdena vyākulaścārjunastadā parvatādyāśca taiḥ śabdaiste sarve vyākulāstadā
Arjuna, troubled then by that sound from the forest-dweller, was disturbed; and by those same sounds, the mountains and all else were disturbed too.
Verse 31 (shiva.shatarudra.39.31)
aho kinnu bhavedeṣa śivaḥ śubhakarastviha mayā caiva śrutaṁ pūrvaṁ kṛṣṇena kathitaṁ punaḥ
"Ah — could this here perhaps be Shiva himself, the bringer of good fortune? I have heard this before, and Krishna too has spoken of it."
Verse 32 (shiva.shatarudra.39.32)
vyāsena kathitaṁ caiva smṛtvā devaistathā punaḥ śivaḥ śubhakaraḥ proktaḥ śivaḥ sukhakarastathā
"Vyasa too has told of it; and, remembering what the gods likewise declared — Shiva is proclaimed the bringer of good, and Shiva too the bringer of happiness."
Verse 33 (shiva.shatarudra.39.33)
muktidaśca svayaṁ prokto muktidānānna saṁśayaḥ tannāmasmaraṇātpuṁsāṁ kalyāṇaṁ jāyate dhruvam
"He himself is declared the giver of liberation, for he is, without doubt, the bestower of liberation; by the mere remembrance of his name, well-being surely comes to men."
Verse 34 (shiva.shatarudra.39.34)
bhajatāṁ sarvabhāvena duḥkhaṁ svapne'pi no bhavet yadā kadācijjāyeta tadā karmasamudbhavam
"For those who worship him with their whole being, sorrow does not come even in a dream; if ever it should arise, it arises only out of one's own past deeds."
Verse 35 (shiva.shatarudra.39.35)
bhāvitadbahvapi jñeyaṁ nūnamalpaṁ na saṁśayaḥ prārabdhasyātha vā doṣo nūnaṁ jñeyo viśeṣataḥ
"Even much of it, once ripened through devotion, should surely be known as little indeed — there is no doubt of this; or else the working of one's own prarabdha karma is to be understood as a thing apart."
Verse 36 (shiva.shatarudra.39.36)
athavā bahu cālpaṁ hi bhogyaṁ nistīrya śaṅkaraḥ kadācidicchayā tasya dūrīkuryānna saṁśayaḥ
"Or else, whether it be much or little, having brought one through the experience of it, Shankara may, at his own will, on occasion remove it altogether — of this there is no doubt."
Verse 37 (shiva.shatarudra.39.37)
viṣaṁ caivāmṛtaṁ kuryādamṛtaṁ viṣameva vā yadicchati karotyeva samarthaḥ kinniṣidhyate
"He could turn poison into nectar, or nectar itself into poison; whatever he wills, he indeed accomplishes — being all-capable, what could ever restrain him?"
Verse 38 (shiva.shatarudra.39.38)
itthaṁ vicāryamāṇe'pi bhaktairanyaiḥ purātanaiḥ bhāvibhiśca sadā bhaktairihānīya manaḥ sthiram
"Though this has thus been pondered by other devotees of old, and will always likewise be pondered by devotees yet to come, bringing here a steady mind —"
Verse 39 (shiva.shatarudra.39.39)
lakṣmīrgaccheccāvatiṣṭhenmaraṇaṁ nikaṭe puraḥ nindāṁ vātha prakurvantu stutiṁ vā duḥkhasaṅkṣayam
"— whether fortune departs or stays, whether death stands close at hand, whether men offer reproach or praise — sorrow comes utterly to its end through him."
Verse 40 (shiva.shatarudra.39.40)
jāyate puṇyapāpābhyāṁ śaṅkaraḥ sukhadaḥ sadā kadācicca parīkṣārthaṁ duḥkhaṁ yacchati vai śivaḥ
"It is according to merit and demerit that Shankara is ever the giver of happiness; and sometimes, only for the sake of testing, Shiva bestows sorrow as well."
Verse 41 (shiva.shatarudra.39.41)
ante ca sukhadaḥ prokto dayālutvānna saṁśayaḥ yathā caiva suvarṇaṁ ca śodhitaṁ śuddhatāṁ vrajet
"In the end, out of his very compassion, he is declared the giver of happiness — of this there is no doubt; just as gold, once refined, attains to its own purity."
Verse 42 (shiva.shatarudra.39.42)
evaṁ caiva mayā pūrvaṁ śrutaṁ munimukhāttathā atastadbhajanenaiva lapsye'haṁ sukhamuttamam
"Thus indeed I have heard before, from a sage's own mouth; therefore, through devotion to him alone, I shall attain the highest happiness."
Verse 43 (shiva.shatarudra.39.43)
ityevaṁ tu vicāraṁ sa karoti yāvadeva hi tāvacca sūkaraḥ prāpto bāṇasammocanāvadhiḥ
While he was still occupied with this very deliberation, the boar arrived, at that very moment when the arrow was to be released.
Verse 44 (shiva.shatarudra.39.44)
śivo'pi pṛṣṭhato lagno hyāyātaḥ śūkarasya hi tayormadhye tadā so'yaṁ dṛśyate śṛṅgamadbhutam
Shiva too arrived there, close on the boar's very trail; and between the two of them there then appeared that wondrous peak.
Verse 45 (shiva.shatarudra.39.45)
tasya proktaṁ ca māhātmyaṁ śivaḥ śīghrataraṁ gataḥ arjunasya ca rakṣārthaṁ śaṅkaro bhaktavatsalaḥ
His own greatness thus made known, Shiva then moved with the greatest swiftness; for Arjuna's protection, Shankara, the cherisher of devotees —
Verse 46 (shiva.shatarudra.39.46)
etasminsamaye tābhyāṁ kṛtaṁ bāṇavimocanam śivabāṇastu pucche vai hyarjunasya mukhe tathā
At this very moment, by the two of them together, arrows were loosed; Shiva's own arrow struck the tail, and Arjuna's struck the mouth.
Verse 47 (shiva.shatarudra.39.47)
śivasya pucchato gatvā mukhānnissṛtya śīghrataḥ bhūmau vilīnaḥ saṁyātastasya vai pucchato gataḥ
Shiva's arrow, entering from the tail, passed swiftly out through the mouth and vanished into the earth, having gone clean through from the tail.
Verse 48 (shiva.shatarudra.39.48)
papāta pārśvataścaiva bāṇaścaivārjunasya ca sūkarastatkṣaṇaṁ daityo mṛto bhūmau papāta ha
The arrows fell, both of them, close by the boar's side, and by Arjuna's as well; and the demon, in the boar's own form, fell dead upon the ground at that very instant.
Verse 49 (shiva.shatarudra.39.49)
devā harṣaṁ paraṁ prāpuḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ ca cakrire jayapūrvaṁ stutikarāḥ praṇamya ca punaḥ punaḥ
The gods were filled with the greatest joy, and rained down a shower of flowers; offering praise led with cries of victory, they bowed again and again.
Verse 50 (shiva.shatarudra.39.50)
śivastuṣṭamanā āsīdarjunaḥ sukhamāgataḥ daityasya ca tadā dṛṣṭvā krūraṁ rūpaṁ ca tau tadā
Shiva's heart grew well pleased, and Arjuna came to happiness; and then, seeing the demon's fearsome form, the two of them —
Verse 51 (shiva.shatarudra.39.51)
arjunastu viśeṣeṇa sukhinā prāha cetasā aho daityavaraścāyaṁ rūpaṁ tu paramādbhutam
Arjuna, his heart especially glad, said: "Ah, this excellent demon — his form is indeed most wondrous."
Verse 52 (shiva.shatarudra.39.52)
kṛtvāgato madvadhārthaṁ śivenāhaṁ surakṣitaḥ īśvareṇa mamādyaiva buddhirdattā na saṁśayaḥ
"He came here to kill me, and I have been well protected by Shiva; today, without doubt, this very understanding has been granted to me by the Lord himself."
Verse 53 (shiva.shatarudra.39.53)
vicāryetyarjunastatra jagau śiva śiveti ca praṇanāma śivaṁ bhūyastuṣṭāva ca punaḥ punaḥ
Having thus reflected, Arjuna there cried out, "Shiva, Shiva," and bowed once more to Shiva, praising him again and again.
