Shatarudra Samhita · Chapter 40
The Kirata Avatara: The Dispute Between the Bhilla and Arjuna
Verse 1 (shiva.shatarudra.40.1)
nandīśvara uvāca sanatkumāra sarvajña śṛṇu līlāṁ parātmanaḥ bhaktavātsalyasaṁyuktāṁ tad dṛḍhatvavidarbhitām
Nandishvara said: Hear, O all-knowing Sanatkumara, the divine sport of the Supreme Soul, filled with love for his devotees and adorned throughout with that very steadfastness.
Verse 2 (shiva.shatarudra.40.2)
śivo'pyatha svabhṛtyaṁ vai preṣayāmāsa sa drutam bāṇārthaṁ ca tadā tatrārjuno'pi samagāttataḥ
Shiva too then swiftly sent his own attendant to fetch the arrow; and Arjuna also came there at that very time, for that same purpose.
Verse 3 (shiva.shatarudra.40.3)
ekasmin samaye prāptau bāṇārthaṁ tadgaṇārjunau arjunastaṁ parābhartsya svabāṇaṁ cāgrahīttadā
At one and the same moment, that gana and Arjuna both arrived there for the arrow; Arjuna, rebuking him, then took up his own arrow.
Verse 4 (shiva.shatarudra.40.4)
gaṇaḥ provāca taṁ tatra kimarthaṁ gṛhyate śaraḥ bāṇaścaivāsmadīyo vai mucyatāṁ ṛṣisattama
The gana said to him there: "Why is this arrow being taken up? It is indeed our own arrow — release it, O best of sages."
Verse 5 (shiva.shatarudra.40.5)
ityuktastena bhillasya gaṇena munisattama so'rjunaḥ śaṅkaraṁ smṛtvā vacanaṁ ca tamabravīt
Thus addressed by that gana of the Bhilla, O foremost of sages, Arjuna, remembering Shankara, spoke this word to him.
Verse 6 (shiva.shatarudra.40.6)
arjuna uvāca ajñātvā kiṁ ca vadasi mūrkho'si tvaṁ vanecara bāṇaśca mocito me'dya tvadīyaśca kathaṁ punaḥ
Arjuna said: "Not knowing the truth, what is it you say? You are a fool, forest-dweller. This arrow has today been loosed by me — how then has it become yours?"
Verse 7 (shiva.shatarudra.40.7)
rekhārūpaṁ ca picchāni mannāmāṅkita eva ca tvadīyaśca kathaṁ jātaḥ svabhāvo dustyajastava
"Its striped markings, its feathers, and my own name inscribed upon it — how has this become yours? Your own nature is indeed hard to give up."
Verse 8 (shiva.shatarudra.40.8)
nandīśvara uvāca ityevaṁ tadvacaḥ śrutvā vihasya sa gaṇeśvaraḥ arjunaṁ ṛṣirūpaṁ taṁ bhillo vākyamupādade
Nandishvara said: Hearing these words, that lord of the gana, laughing, took up this argument against the sage-like Arjuna — that Bhilla spoke thus.
Verse 9 (shiva.shatarudra.40.9)
tāpasa śrūyatāṁ re tvaṁ na tapaḥ kriyate tvayā veṣataśca tapasvī tvaṁ na yathārthaṁ chalāyate
"Hear me, ascetic — no austerity at all is being performed by you; you are a tapasvin only in outward dress, and falsely so, not in truth."
Verse 10 (shiva.shatarudra.40.10)
tapasvī ca kathaṁ mithyā bhāṣaṇaṁ kurute naraḥ naikākinaṁ ca māṁ tvaṁ ca jānīhi vāhinīpatim
"How could an ascetic, such a man, speak falsehood? Do not think me alone — know me to be the lord of a host."
Verse 11 (shiva.shatarudra.40.11)
bahubhirvanabhillaiśca yuktaḥ svāmī sa āsate samarthaḥ sarvathā kartuṁ vigrahānugrahau punaḥ
"My own master abides there, attended by many forest Bhillas; he is capable, in every way, of both harm and favor."
Verse 12 (shiva.shatarudra.40.12)
vartate tasya bāṇo'yaṁ yo nītaśca tvayādhunā ayaṁ bāṇaśca te pārśve na sthāsyati kadācana
"This arrow is his — the very one you have now taken. This arrow will never remain with you."
Verse 13 (shiva.shatarudra.40.13)
tapaḥphalaṁ kathaṁ tvaṁ ca hātumicchasi tāpasa cauryācchalādardyamānād vismayātsatyabhañjanāt
"Ascetic, how is it that you wish to forfeit the very fruit of your own austerity — through theft, through deceit, through being overcome by confusion, through the breaking of truth?"
Verse 14 (shiva.shatarudra.40.14)
tapasā kṣīyate satyametadeva mayā śrutam tasmācca tapasaste'dya bhaviṣyati phalaṁ kutaḥ
"Austerity is diminished by falsehood — this very truth I have heard. From what source, then, will your austerity today bear any fruit at all?"
Verse 15 (shiva.shatarudra.40.15)
tasmādamuktabāṇo hi kṛtaghnastvaṁ bhaviṣyasi mamaiva svāminā bāṇastavārthe mocito dhruvam
"Therefore, by taking an arrow not given to you, you shall become one who is ungrateful; it was my own master who, for your very sake, surely loosed this arrow."
Verse 16 (shiva.shatarudra.40.16)
śatruśca māritastena punarbāṇaśca rakṣitaḥ atyantaṁ ca kṛtaghno'si tapo'śubhakarastathā
"By him the enemy was slain, and by him too the arrow was recovered; you are utterly ungrateful, and this austerity of yours brings only misfortune."
Verse 17 (shiva.shatarudra.40.17)
satyaṁ na bhāṣase tvaṁ ca kimataḥ siddhimicchasi prayojanaṁ ced bāṇena svāmī ca yācyatāṁ mama
"You do not speak the truth — how then can you desire success? If you have need of an arrow, then it should be begged of my own master."
Verse 18 (shiva.shatarudra.40.18)
īdṛśāṁśca bahūnbāṇāṁstadā dātuṁ kṣamaḥ svayam rājā ca vartate me'dya kiṁ tvevaṁ yācyate tvayā
"My own king is himself capable of giving many such arrows; he stands ready for me even now — why then do you take it in this way, without so much as asking?"
Verse 19 (shiva.shatarudra.40.19)
upakāraṁ parityajya hyapakāraṁ samīhase naitadyuktaṁ tvayādyaiva kriyate tyaja cāpalam
"Setting aside a kindness, you seek instead to do harm; this is not at all fitting of you now — give up such fickleness."
Verse 20 (shiva.shatarudra.40.20)
nandīśvara uvāca ityevaṁ vacanaṁ tasya śrutvā pārtho'rjunastadā krodhaṁ kṛtvā śivaṁ smṛtvā mitaṁ vākyamathābravīt
Nandishvara said: Hearing these words of his, Partha, Arjuna, grew angry, and, remembering Shiva, spoke these measured words.
Verse 21 (shiva.shatarudra.40.21)
arjuna uvāca śṛṇu bhilla pravakṣyāmi na satyaṁ tava bhāṣaṇam yathā jātistathā tvāṁ ca jānāmi hi vanecara
Arjuna said: "Hear me, Bhilla — I will speak plainly: what you say is not true. I know you, forest-dweller, exactly as your own kind truly is."
Verse 22 (shiva.shatarudra.40.22)
ahaṁ rājā bhavān cauraḥ kathaṁ yuddhaprayuktatā yuddhaṁ me sabalaiḥ kāryaṁ nādhamairhi kadācana
"I am a king, you a thief — how then is this a matter fit for battle? I must fight only with the strong, and never with the base."
Verse 23 (shiva.shatarudra.40.23)
tasmātte ca tathā svāmī bhaviṣyati bhavādṛśaḥ dātāraśca vayaṁ proktāścaurā yūyaṁ vanecarāḥ
"Therefore your own master must be just such a one as you; we are called givers, while you forest-dwellers are called thieves."
Verse 24 (shiva.shatarudra.40.24)
kathaṁ yācyo mayā bhillarāja evaṁ ca sāmpratam tvameva yācase naiva bāṇaṁ māṁ kiṁ vanecara
"Why then should I now beg in this way of your chief of Bhillas? It is you yourself who is begging, is it not — why then, forest-dweller, do you not beg the arrow of me instead?"
Verse 25 (shiva.shatarudra.40.25)
dadāmi te tathā bāṇān santi me bahavo dhruvam rājā ca grahaṇaṁ caiva na dāsyati tathā bhavet
"I will indeed give you arrows — I have many of them, without doubt; but once taken, your king will surely never let it rest there."
Verse 26 (shiva.shatarudra.40.26)
kiṁ punaśca tathā bāṇānprayacchāmi vanecara yadi me yā cikīrṣā syātkathaṁ nāgamyate'dhunā
"Why then, forest-dweller, should I offer you arrows at all? If it were truly my own wish, why has it not already come to pass?"
Verse 27 (shiva.shatarudra.40.27)
yathāgacchattu te bhartā kimarthaṁ bhāṣate'dhunā āgatya ca mayā sārdhaṁ jitvā yuddhe ca māṁ punaḥ
"Just as your master might come himself — why does he speak so even now? Let him come, and, having defeated me in battle once more —"
Verse 28 (shiva.shatarudra.40.28)
nītvā bāṇamimaṁ bhillasvāmī te vāhinīpatiḥ nijālayaṁ sukhaṁ yātu vilambaḥ kriyate katham
"— let that lord of the Bhillas, your own master, that commander of a host, take this arrow and go happily to his own home; why then is this delay being made?"
Verse 29 (shiva.shatarudra.40.29)
nandīśvara uvāca maheśvarakṛpāprāptasadbalasyārjunasya hi ityetadvacanaṁ śrutvā bhillo vākyamathābravīt
Nandishvara said: Hearing these words of Arjuna, whose true strength had been won through Maheshvara's own grace, the Bhilla then spoke as follows.
Verse 30 (shiva.shatarudra.40.30)
bhilla uvāca ajño'si tvaṁ ṛṣirnāsi maraṇaṁ tvīhase katham dehi bāṇaṁ sukhaṁ tiṣṭha tvanyathā kleśabhāgbhaveḥ
The Bhilla said: "You are ignorant — you are no sage at all; why then do you court death in this way? Give up the arrow and remain at ease, or else you shall become the sharer of suffering."
Verse 31 (shiva.shatarudra.40.31)
nandīśvara uvāca ityuktastena bhillena śivasacchaktiśobhinā gaṇena pāṇḍavastaṁ ca prāha smṛtvā ca śaṅkaram
Nandishvara said: Thus addressed by that Bhilla-gana, resplendent with Shiva's own true power, the Pandava, calling Shankara to mind, spoke to him.
Verse 32 (shiva.shatarudra.40.32)
arjuna uvāca madvākyaṁ tattvato bhilla śṛṇu tvaṁ ca vanecara āgamiṣyati te svāmī darśayiṣye phalaṁ tadā
Arjuna said: "Hear my words as they truly are, Bhilla, forest-dweller — your master will come, and then I shall show him what fruit this bears."
Verse 33 (shiva.shatarudra.40.33)
na śobhate tvayā yuddhaṁ kariṣye svāminā tava upahāsakaraṁ jñeyaṁ yuddhaṁ siṁhaśṛgālayoḥ
"Battle does not befit you; I shall wage it instead with your master. Know that a contest between a lion and a jackal is fit only to be mocked."
Verse 34 (shiva.shatarudra.40.34)
śrutaṁ ca madvacaste'dya drakṣyasi tvaṁ mahābalam gacchasva svāminaṁ bhilla yathecchasi tathā kuru
"You have now heard my words; you shall see my great might. Go, Bhilla, to your master — do as you please."
Verse 35 (shiva.shatarudra.40.35)
nandīśvara uvāca ityuktastu gatastatra bhillaḥ pārthena vai mune śivāvatāro yatrāste kirāto vāhinīpatiḥ
Nandishvara said: Thus addressed, O sage, that Bhilla, sent off by Partha, went there where the avatara of Shiva, the Kirata, lord of that host, abode.
Verse 36 (shiva.shatarudra.40.36)
athārjunasya vacanaṁ bhillanāthāya vistarāt sarvaṁ nivedayāmāsa tasyai bhillaparātmane
Then he related to the lord of the Bhillas, that Supreme Soul in Bhilla's own form, all of Arjuna's words in full detail.
Verse 37 (shiva.shatarudra.40.37)
sa kirāteśvaraḥ śrutvā tadvaco harṣamāgataḥ ājagāma svasainyena śaṅkaro bhillarūpadhṛk
That Lord of the Kiratas, hearing these words, was filled with delight; and Shankara, in his Bhilla form, came there together with his own army.
Verse 38 (shiva.shatarudra.40.38)
arjunaśca tadā senāṁ kirātasya ca pāṇḍavaḥ dṛṣṭvā gṛhītvā saśaraṁ dhanuḥ sammukha āyayau
Then Arjuna, the Pandava, seeing the Kirata's army, took up his bow with an arrow fitted, and came forward to meet him face to face.
Verse 39 (shiva.shatarudra.40.39)
atho kirātaśca punaḥ preṣayāmāsa taṁ caram tanmukhena jagau vākyaṁ bhāratāya mahātmane
Then the Kirata sent that same spy once again, and through his mouth spoke this word to the great-souled prince of Bharata's line.
Verse 40 (shiva.shatarudra.40.40)
kirāta uvāca paśya sainyaṁ tapasvistvaṁ muñca bāṇaṁ vrajādhunā maraṇaṁ svalpakāryārthaṁ kathamicchasi sāmpratam
The Kirata said: "Behold this army, ascetic — release the arrow now, and go your way. Why do you now court death over so small a matter?"
Verse 41 (shiva.shatarudra.40.41)
bhrātarastava duḥkhārtāḥ kalatraṁ ca tataḥ param pṛthivī hastataste'dya yāsyatīti matirmama
"Your brothers are afflicted with grief, and your wife besides; and the earth itself, I think, shall today slip from your very grasp."
Verse 42 (shiva.shatarudra.40.42)
nandīśvara uvāca ityuktaṁ parameśena pārthadārḍhyaparīkṣayā sarvathārjunarakṣārthaṁ dhṛtarūpeṇa śambhunā
Nandishvara said: Thus spoke the Supreme Lord, testing Partha's firmness — Shambhu himself, who had taken on this very form entirely for Arjuna's protection.
Verse 43 (shiva.shatarudra.40.43)
ityuktastu tadāgatya sa gaṇaḥ śāṅkaraśca tat vistarād vṛttamakhilamarjunāya nyavedayat
Thus told, that gana of Shiva, having come there, then related the whole event to Arjuna in full detail.
Verse 44 (shiva.shatarudra.40.44)
tacchrutvā tu punaḥ prāha prārthastaṁ dūtamāgatam vāhinīpataye vācyaṁ viparītaṁ bhaviṣyati
Hearing this, Partha then said again to that messenger who had come: "Tell your commander this — the outcome will be quite the reverse."
Verse 45 (shiva.shatarudra.40.45)
"If I were indeed to give up this arrow of mine, I would surely become a blemish upon my own lineage — of this there is no doubt."
Verse 46 (shiva.shatarudra.40.46)
bhrātaraścaiva duḥkhārtāḥ bhavantu ca tathā dhruvam vidyāśca niṣphalā me syustasmādāgaccha vai dhruvam
"And let my brothers indeed be afflicted with grief on this account; let even my own lore become fruitless because of it — even so, come, without fail."
Verse 47 (shiva.shatarudra.40.47)
siṁhaścaiva śṛgālādvā bhīto naiva mayā śrutaḥ tathā vanecarādrājā na bibheti kadācana
"I have never heard of a lion being afraid of a jackal; likewise, a king is never afraid of a forest-dweller."
Verse 48 (shiva.shatarudra.40.48)
nandīśvara uvāca ityuktastaṁ punargatvā svāminaṁ pāṇḍavena saḥ sarvaṁ nivedayāmāsa taduktaṁ hi viśeṣataḥ
Nandishvara said: Thus told, he went once more to his own master and reported everything the Pandava had said, in particular detail.
Verse 49 (shiva.shatarudra.40.49)
atha so'pi kirātāhvo mahādevaḥ sasainyakaḥ tacchrutvā sainyasaṁyukto hyarjunaṁ cāgamattadā
Then that Mahadeva too, called by the name Kirata, together with his army, hearing this, advanced with his host toward Arjuna.
