The Greatness of Trimbakeshvara

Chapter 25All chaptersChapter 27

Verse 1 (shiva.kotirudra.26.1)

sūta uvāca evaṁ kṛte tu ṛṣiṇā sastrīkena dvijāḥ śivaḥ āvirbabhūva saśivaḥ prasannaḥ sagaṇastadā

Suta said: When the sage, together with his wife, had thus done all this, O brahmins, Shiva then appeared there, pleased, together with Shivā [Pārvatī] and his attendant hosts.

Verse 2 (shiva.kotirudra.26.2)

atha prasannaḥ saśivo varaṁ brūhi mahāmune prasanno’haṁ subhaktyā ta ityuvāca kṛpānidhiḥ

Then, pleased, together with Shivā, he said: "Ask a boon, O great sage; I am pleased by your true devotion" — thus spoke that ocean of compassion.

Verse 3 (shiva.kotirudra.26.3)

tadā tatsundaraṁ rūpaṁ dṛṣṭvā śambhormahātmanaḥ praṇamya śaṅkaraṁ bhaktyā stutiṁ cakre mudānvitaḥ

Then, seeing that beautiful form of the great-souled Shambhu, he bowed to Shankara with devotion, and, filled with joy, offered praise.

Verse 4 (shiva.kotirudra.26.4)

stutvā bahu praṇamyeśaṁ baddhāñjalipuṭaḥ sthitaḥ niṣpāpaṁ kuru māṁ devābravīditi sa gautamaḥ

Having praised him much and bowed to the Lord, standing with joined palms, that Gautama said: "O god, make me free of sin."

Verse 5 (shiva.kotirudra.26.5)

sūta uvāca ityākarṇya vacastasya gautamasya mahātmanaḥ suprasannataro bhūtvā śivo vākyamupādade

Suta said: Hearing these words of the great-souled Gautama, Shiva, becoming exceedingly pleased, took up speech.

Verse 6 (shiva.kotirudra.26.6)

śiva uvāca dhanyo’si kṛtakṛtyo’si niṣpāpo’si sadā mune etairduṣṭaiḥ kila tvaṁ ca chalito’si khalātmabhiḥ

Shiva said: "Blessed are you, your purpose is fulfilled, you are ever sinless, O sage; indeed you have been deceived by these wicked, evil-natured ones."

Verse 7 (shiva.kotirudra.26.7)

tvadīyadarśanāllokā niṣpāpāśca bhavanti hi kiṁ punastvaṁ sapāpo’si madbhaktinirataḥ sadā

By the mere sight of you, people become free of sin; how much more, then, could you — ever devoted to me — be sinful?

Verse 8 (shiva.kotirudra.26.8)

upadravastvayi mune yaiḥ kṛtastu durātmabhiḥ te pāpāśca durācārā hatyāvantasta eva hi

Those evil-souled ones, O sage, who caused this outrage against you — they indeed are the sinners, the ill-conducted; they alone truly bear the guilt of the killing.

Verse 9 (shiva.kotirudra.26.9)

eteṣāṁ darśanādanye pāpiṣṭhāḥ sambhavantu ca kṛtaghnāśca tathā jātā naiteṣāṁ niṣkṛtiḥ kvacit

By the mere sight of these men, others too may become most sinful; for they have become ingrates, and for them there is no expiation anywhere.

Verse 10 (shiva.kotirudra.26.10)

sūta uvāca ityuktvā śaṅkarastasmai teṣāṁ duścaritaṁ tadā bahūvāca prabhurviprāḥ satkado’satsu daṇḍadaḥ

Suta said: Having said this, Shankara then told him much more of their evil conduct, O brahmins — that Lord who honours the good and punishes the wicked.

Verse 11 (shiva.kotirudra.26.11)

śarvoktamiti sa śrutvā suvismitamanā ṛṣiḥ supraṇamya śivaṁ bhaktyā sāñjaliḥ punarabravīt

Hearing what Sharva [Shiva] had thus said, that sage, his mind greatly astonished, bowed to Shiva with devotion, and, with joined palms, spoke again.

Verse 12 (shiva.kotirudra.26.12)

gautama uvāca ṛṣibhistairmaheśāna hyupakāraḥ kṛto mahān yadyevaṁ na kṛtaṁ taistu darśanaṁ te kuto bhavet

Gautama said: "O Great Lord, a great favour indeed has been done to me by those sages; had they not acted so, how would I have gained this sight of you?"

Verse 13 (shiva.kotirudra.26.13)

dhanyāste ṛṣayo yaistu mahyaṁ śubhataraṁ kṛtam taddurācaraṇādeva mama svārtho mahānabhūt

Blessed are those sages who have done me this greater good; from their very ill conduct my own great gain has come.

Verse 14 (shiva.kotirudra.26.14)

sūta uvāca ityevaṁ tadvacaḥ śrutvā suprasanno maheśvaraḥ gautamaṁ pratyuvācāśu kṛpādṛṣṭyā vilokya ca

Suta said: Hearing these words, Maheshvara, greatly pleased, looking upon Gautama with a glance of compassion, quickly replied to him.

Verse 15 (shiva.kotirudra.26.15)

śiva uvāca ṛṣirdhanyo’si viprendra ṛṣiśreṣṭhataro’si vai jñātvā māṁ suprasannaṁ hi vṛṇu tvaṁ varamuttamam

Shiva said: "O sage, blessed are you, O chief of brahmins; you are indeed the very best of sages. Knowing me to be well pleased, choose the highest boon."

Verse 16 (shiva.kotirudra.26.16)

sūta uvāca gautamo’pi vicāryaivaṁ loke viśrutamityuta anyathā na bhavedeva tasmāduktaṁ samācaret

Suta said: Gautama too, reflecting thus — "Let this become renowned in the world, and let it not turn out otherwise" — resolved to act upon what he would ask.

Verse 17 (shiva.kotirudra.26.17)

niścityaivaṁ muniśreṣṭho gautamaḥ śivabhaktimān sāñjalirnataśīrṣo hi śaṅkaraṁ vākyamabravīt

Having thus resolved, that foremost of sages, Gautama, devoted to Shiva, with joined palms and bowed head, spoke this word to Shankara.

Verse 18 (shiva.kotirudra.26.18)

gautama uvāca satyaṁ nātha bravīṣi tvaṁ tathāpi pañcabhiḥ kṛtam nānyathā bhavatītyatra yajjātaṁ jāyatāṁ tu tat

Gautama said: "True, O Lord, is what you say; and yet what has thus been ordained cannot come to be otherwise — let what has happened stand as it is."

Verse 19 (shiva.kotirudra.26.19)

yadi prasanno deveśa gaṅgā ca dīyatāṁ mama kuru lokopakāraṁ hi namaste’stu namo’stu te

"If you are pleased, O Lord of gods, then let the Ganges be given to me; do this favour for the world's sake. Salutations to you, salutations to you!"

Verse 20 (shiva.kotirudra.26.20)

sūta uvāca ityuktvā vacanaṁ tasya dhṛtvā vai pādapaṅkajam namaścakāra deveśaṁ gautamo lokakāmyayā

Suta said: Having spoken these words, and holding fast the Lord's lotus feet, Gautama, for the world's welfare, bowed to the Lord of gods.

Verse 21 (shiva.kotirudra.26.21)

tatastu śaṅkaro devaḥ pṛthivyāśca divaśca saḥ sāraṁ caiva samuddhṛtya rakṣitaṁ pūrvameva tat

Then the god Shankara, having drawn forth the very essence of the earth and of heaven — that which he had already kept in reserve before —

Verse 22 (shiva.kotirudra.26.22)

vivāhe brahmaṇā dattamavaśiṣṭaṁ ca kiñcana tattasmai dattavān śambhurmunaye bhaktavatsalaḥ

that remainder which had been given by Brahma at his wedding — that Shambhu, ever affectionate to his devotees, gave to the sage.

Verse 23 (shiva.kotirudra.26.23)

gaṅgājalaṁ tadā tatra strīrūpamabhavatparam tasyāścaiva ṛṣiśreṣṭhaḥ stutiṁ kṛtvā natiṁ vyadhāt

Then that Ganges-water there took on a supreme feminine form; and that foremost of sages, having praised her, made obeisance.

Verse 24 (shiva.kotirudra.26.24)

sūta uvāca śambhuścāpi tadovāca sarveṣāṁ hitakṛcchṛṇu gaṅge gautamamenaṁ tvaṁ pāvayasva madājñayā

Suta said: Shambhu too then spoke, he who works the good of all: "Listen, O Ganges — purify this Gautama, by my command."

Verse 26 (shiva.kotirudra.26.26)

iti śrutvā vacastasya śambhośca gautamasya ca uvācaiva śivaṁ gaṅgā śivaśaktirhi pāvanī

Hearing these words of both Shambhu and Gautama, Ganga — who is indeed the purifying power of Shiva — spoke to Shiva.

Verse 27 (shiva.kotirudra.26.27)

Verse 28 (shiva.kotirudra.26.28)

Verse 50 (shiva.kotirudra.26.50)

sā gaṅgā gautamī nāmnā liṅgaṁ tryambakamīritam khyātākhyātaṁ babhūvātha mahāpātakanāśanam

That Ganges became known by the name Gautami; and the linga was proclaimed as Trimbaka, becoming famed and the destroyer of the greatest sins.

Verse 51 (shiva.kotirudra.26.51)
