Krishna and Upamanyu: Upamanyu's Own Path

All chaptersChapter 2

Verse 1 (shiva.uma.1.1)

yo dhatte bhuvanāni sattvaguṇavānsraṣṭā rajaḥsaṁśrayaḥ saṁharttā tamasānvito guṇavatīṁ māyāmatītya sthitaḥ satyānandamanantabodhamamalaṁ brahmādisaṁjñāspadaṁ nityaṁ sattvasamanvayādadhigataṁ pūrṇaṁ śivaṁ dhīmahi

Who, as sattva-natured Creator, upholds the worlds, resting upon rajas; who, imbued with tamas, is the Destroyer; and who yet stands beyond the qualified Maya of the three gunas — that stainless one who is Truth, Bliss, and Infinite Consciousness, the very ground of names such as 'Brahman', eternal, attained through communion with pure being — on that perfect Shiva do we meditate.

Verse 2 (shiva.uma.1.2)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ sūta sūta mahāprājña vyāsaśiṣya namo'stu te caturthī koṭirudrākhyā śrāvitā saṁhitā tvayā

The sages said: O Suta, Suta, greatly wise one, disciple of Vyasa, salutations to you! You have recited to us the fourth Samhita, known as Koti-Rudra.

Verse 3 (shiva.uma.1.3)

athomāsaṁhitāntaḥsthanānākhyānasamanvitam brūhi śambhoścaritraṁ vai sāmbasya paramātmanaḥ

Now tell us the story of Shambhu — the Supreme Self united with Amba, Uma — replete with the many narratives contained within the Uma Samhita.

Verse 4 (shiva.uma.1.4)

sūta uvāca maharṣayaḥ śaunakādyāḥ śṛṇuta premataḥ śubham śāṅkaraṁ caritaṁ divyaṁ bhuktimuktipradaṁ param

Suta said: O great sages headed by Shaunaka, listen with love to this auspicious and divine story of Shankara, supreme, bestowing both worldly enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 5 (shiva.uma.1.5)

itīdṛśaṁ puṇyapraśnaṁ pṛṣṭavān munisattamaḥ vyāsaḥ sanatkumāraṁ vai śaivaṁ saccaritaṁ jagau

Thus the foremost of sages, Vyasa, having posed this most meritorious question, sought from Sanatkumara the true and sacred story relating to Shiva.

Verse 6 (shiva.uma.1.6)

sanatkumāra uvāca vāsudevāya yatproktamupamanyumaharṣiṇā taducyate mayā vyāsa caritaṁ hi maheśituḥ

Sanatkumara said: O Vyasa, I now relate to you that very story of the great Lord which was told to Vasudeva by the great sage Upamanyu.

Verse 7 (shiva.uma.1.7)

purā putrārthamagamatkailāsaṁ śaṅkarālayam vasudevasutaḥ kṛṣṇastapastaptuṁ śivasya hi

Long ago, for the sake of obtaining a son, Krishna, son of Vasudeva, went to Kailasa, the abode of Shankara, to perform austerities to Shiva.

Verse 8 (shiva.uma.1.8)

atropamanyuṁ sandṛṣṭvā tapantaṁ śṛṅga uttame praṇamya bhaktyā sa muniṁ paryapṛcchatkṛtāñjaliḥ

There, seeing Upamanyu performing austerities on the highest peak, he bowed to the sage with devotion and, with joined palms, questioned him.

Verse 9 (shiva.uma.1.9)

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca upamanyo mahāprājña śaivapravara sanmate putrārthamagamaṁ taptuṁ tapo'tra giriśasya hi

Shri Krishna said: O Upamanyu, greatly wise one, foremost of Shiva's devotees, of righteous mind! I have come here to perform austerities to Girisha, Shiva, for the sake of obtaining a son.

Verse 10 (shiva.uma.1.10)

brūhi śaṅkaramāhātmyaṁ sadānandakaraṁ mune yacchrutvā bhaktitaḥ kuryāṁ tapa aiśvaramuttamam

Tell me, O sage, of the ever bliss-giving greatness of Shankara, so that having heard it with devotion, I may perform the supreme austerity directed to the Lord.

Verse 11 (shiva.uma.1.11)

sanatkumāra uvāca iti śrutvā vacastasya vāsudevasya dhīmataḥ pratyuvāca prasannātmā hyupamanyuḥ smaran śivam

Sanatkumara said: Having heard these words of the wise Vasudeva, Upamanyu, with a glad heart, remembering Shiva, replied.

Verse 12 (shiva.uma.1.12)

upamanyuruvāca śṛṇu kṛṣṇa mahāśaiva mahimānaṁ maheśituḥ yamadrākṣamahaṁ śambhorbhaktivardhanamuttamam

Upamanyu said: Listen, O Krishna, great devotee of Shiva, to the glory of the great Lord — that supreme glory of Shambhu which increases devotion, and which I myself have witnessed.

Verse 13 (shiva.uma.1.13)

tapaḥstho'haṁ samadrākṣaṁ śaṅkaraṁ ca tadāyudhān parivāraṁ samastaṁ ca viṣṇvādīnamarādikān

While established in austerity, I beheld Shankara together with his weapons, his entire retinue, and the immortals headed by Vishnu.

Verse 14 (shiva.uma.1.14)

tribhiraṁśaiḥ śobhamānamajasrasukhamavyayam ekapādaṁ mahādaṁṣṭraṁ sajvālakavalairmukhaiḥ

It shone resplendent with its three prongs, ever blissful, imperishable; one-footed, with mighty fangs, its mouths filled with blazing flame.

Verse 15 (shiva.uma.1.15)

dvisahasramayūkhānāṁ jyotiṣātivirājitam sarvāstrapravarābādhamanekākṣaṁ sahasrapāt

Shining exceedingly with the radiance of two thousand rays, unassailable even by the finest of all weapons, many-eyed, thousand-footed.

Verse 16 (shiva.uma.1.16)

yaśca kalpāntasamaye viśvaṁ saṁharati dhruvam nāvadhyo yasya ca bhavettrailaukye sacarācare

Who, at the time of the dissolution of the aeon, surely destroys the universe, and for whom nothing in all the three worlds, moving or unmoving, is beyond slaying.

Verse 17 (shiva.uma.1.17)

maheśvarabhujotsṛṣṭaṁ trailokyaṁ sacarācaram nirdadāha drutaṁ kṛtsnaṁ nimeṣārddhānna saṁśayaḥ

Hurled from the arm of Maheshvara, it swiftly consumed by fire the entire threefold world, moving and unmoving, in half the blink of an eye — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 18 (shiva.uma.1.18)

tapaḥstho rudrapārśvasthaṁ dṛṣṭavānahamavyayam guhyamastraṁ paraṁ cāsya na tulyamadhikaṁ kvacit

Established in austerity, I beheld that imperishable weapon standing beside Rudra — his secret and supreme weapon, than which there is nowhere any equal or greater.

Verse 19 (shiva.uma.1.19)

yattacchūlamiti khyātaṁ sarvalokeṣu śūlinaḥ vijayābhidhamatyugraṁ sarvaśastrāstranāśakam

That which is renowned in all worlds as the Shula, the Trident of the Trident-bearer, is named 'Vijaya', exceedingly fierce, the destroyer of every weapon and missile.

Verse 20 (shiva.uma.1.20)

dārayedyanmahīṁ kṛtsnāṁ śoṣayedyanmahodadhim pātayedakhilaṁ jyotiścakraṁ yannātra saṁśayaḥ

By which the entire earth could be split apart, by which the great ocean could be dried up, by which the whole circle of luminaries could be brought down — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 21 (shiva.uma.1.21)

yauvanāśvo hato yena māndhātā sabalaḥ purā cakravartī mahātejāstrailokyavijayo nṛpaḥ

By which was slain, long ago, Mandhata the son of Yuvanashva — the mighty emperor of great splendor, conqueror of the three worlds.

Verse 22 (shiva.uma.1.22)

darpāviṣṭo haihayaśca niḥkṣipto lavaṇāsuraḥ śatrughnaṁ nṛpatiṁ yuddhe samāhūya samantataḥ

The arrogance-filled king of the Haihayas, and the demon Lavana who had challenged King Shatrughna to battle on every side, were struck down by this same Shula.

Verse 23 (shiva.uma.1.23)

tasmindaitye vinaṣṭe tu rudrahaste gataṁ tu yat tacchūlamiti tīkṣṇāgraṁ santrāsajananaṁ mahat

When that demon was destroyed, that same sharp-pointed, greatly terror-inspiring Shula returned once more to the hand of Rudra.

Verse 24 (shiva.uma.1.24)

triśikhāṁ bhṛkuṭīṁ kṛtvā tarjayantamiva sthitam vidhūmrānalasaṅkāśaṁ bālasūryamivoditam

With its three prongs like a furrowed, threatening brow, it stood as if menacing its foes — resembling smokeless fire, like the newly risen morning sun.

Verse 25 (shiva.uma.1.25)

sarpahastamanirdeśyaṁ pāśahastamivāntakam paraśuṁ tīkṣṇadhāraṁ ca sarpādyaiśca vibhūṣitam

I saw the indescribable one with a serpent in hand, like Death himself with noose in hand; and the sharp-edged axe, adorned with serpents and the like.

Verse 26 (shiva.uma.1.26)

kalpāntadahanākāraṁ tathā puruṣavigraham yattadbhārgavarāmasya kṣatriyāntakaraṁ raṇe

That axe, having the form of the fire of cosmic dissolution, yet also possessed of a human-like form — the same weapon which, in the hand of Parashurama, became the destroyer of kshatriyas in battle.

Verse 27 (shiva.uma.1.27)

rāmo yadbalamāśritya śivadattaśca vai purā triḥsaptakṛtvo sa kṣatraṁ dadāha hṛṣito muniḥ

Relying on whose power — given long ago by Shiva — Rama, the joyful sage, burned away the kshatriya race twenty-one times, thrice seven times.

Verse 28 (shiva.uma.1.28)

sudarśanaṁ tathā cakraṁ sahasravadanaṁ vibhum dvisahasrabhujaṁ devamadrākṣaṁ puruṣākṛtim

I also saw the discus Sudarshana, the mighty one with a thousand faces, the god with two thousand arms, having the form of a person.

Verse 29 (shiva.uma.1.29)

dvisahasrekṣaṇaṁ dīptaṁ sahasracaraṇākulam koṭisūryapratīkāśaṁ trailokyadahanakṣamam

With two thousand blazing eyes, filled with a thousand feet, radiant as a crore of suns, capable of burning the three worlds.

Verse 30 (shiva.uma.1.30)

vajraṁ mahojjvalaṁ tīkṣṇaṁ śataparvamanuttamam mahādhanuḥ pinākaṁ ca satūṇīraṁ mahādyutim

I also saw the thunderbolt, greatly blazing, sharp, of a hundred joints, unsurpassed; and the great bow Pinaka together with its quiver, of great splendor.

Verse 31 (shiva.uma.1.31)

śaktiṁ khaṅgaṁ ca pāśaṁ ca mahādīptaṁ samāṅkuśam gadāṁ ca mahatīṁ divyāmanyānyastrāṇi dṛṣṭavān

I saw the spear, the sword, the noose, the greatly blazing goad, the great and divine mace, and other various weapons.

Verse 32 (shiva.uma.1.32)

tathā ca lokapālānāmastrāṇyetāni yāni ca adrākṣaṁ tāni sarvāṇi bhagavadrudrapārśvataḥ

And likewise all the weapons belonging to the Guardians of the Directions — all of these I saw beside the Blessed Lord Rudra.

Verse 33 (shiva.uma.1.33)

savyadeśe tu devasya brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ vimānaṁ divyamāsthāya haṁsayuktaṁ mano'nugam

On the right side of the Lord, Brahma, grandfather of the worlds, stood mounted on his divine chariot yoked with swans, swift as thought.

Verse 34 (shiva.uma.1.34)

vāmapārśve tu tasyaiva śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ vainateyaṁ samāsthāya tathā nārāyaṇaḥ sthitaḥ

And on his left side stood Narayana, bearer of the conch, discus, and mace, mounted upon Garuda, the son of Vinata.

Verse 35 (shiva.uma.1.35)

svāyambhuvādyā manavo bhṛgvādyā ṛṣayastathā śakrādyā devatāścaiva sarva eva samaṁ yayuḥ

The Manus headed by Svayambhuva, the sages headed by Bhrigu, and the gods headed by Indra — all of them together had come there.

Verse 36 (shiva.uma.1.36)

skandaḥ śaktiṁ samādāya mayūrasthaḥ saghaṇṭakaḥ devyāḥ samīpe santasthau dvitīya iva pāvakaḥ

Skanda, holding his spear, mounted upon his peacock adorned with bells, stood near the Goddess like a second Fire.

Verse 37 (shiva.uma.1.37)

nandī śūlaṁ samādāya bhavāgre samavasthitaḥ sarvabhūtagaṇāścaiva mātaro vividhāḥ sthitāḥ

Nandi, holding the trident, stood before Bhava; and all the hosts of Bhutas and the various Mother-goddesses stood there too.

Verse 38 (shiva.uma.1.38)

te'bhivādya maheśānaṁ parivārya samantataḥ astuvanvividhaiḥ stotrairmahādevaṁ tadā surāḥ

Having saluted the great Lord and surrounded him on every side, the gods then praised Mahadeva with various hymns.

Verse 39 (shiva.uma.1.39)

yatkiñcittu jagatyasmindṛśyate śrūyate'thavā tatsarvaṁ bhagavatpārśve nirīkṣyāhaṁ suvismitaḥ

Whatever indeed can be seen or heard of in this world — all of that, beholding it beside the Lord, I was utterly astonished.

Verse 40 (shiva.uma.1.40)

sumahaddhairyamālambya prāñjalirvividhaiḥ stavaiḥ paramānandasammagno'bhūvaṁ kṛṣṇāhamadhvare

O Krishna, mustering great fortitude, with joined palms, offering various hymns, I became immersed in supreme bliss during that sacred rite.

Verse 41 (shiva.uma.1.41)

sammukhe śaṅkaraṁ dṛṣṭvā bāṣpagadgadayā girā apūjayaṁ suvidhivadahaṁ śraddhāsamanvitaḥ

Upamanyu said: 'O Lord, if you are pleased, and if my devotion in you is steadfast, then by that very truth may I obtain knowledge spanning the three times — past, present, and future.'

Verse 47 (shiva.uma.1.47)

O foremost of the Yadus, when thus addressed by me, Shambhu the Supreme Lord, smiling, swiftly looked upon me with an eye of grace, and spoke.

Verse 58 (shiva.uma.1.58)

evaṁ dṛṣṭo mayā kṛṣṇa parivārasamanvitaḥ śaṅkaraḥ parameśāno bhuktimuktipradāyakaḥ

Thus, O Krishna, I beheld Shankara, the Supreme Lord together with his retinue, the bestower of both enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 59 (shiva.uma.1.59)

śambhunā parameśena yaduktaṁ tena dhīmatā tadavāptaṁ ca me sarvaṁ devadeva samādhinā

O God of gods, whatever was spoken by that wise Supreme Lord Shambhu — all of that I obtained through my meditation.

Verse 60 (shiva.uma.1.60)

pratyakṣaṁ caiva tai jātān gandharvāpsarasastathā ṛṣīnvidyādharāṁścaiva paśya siddhānvyavasthitān

Behold directly the Gandharvas and Apsarases born here, likewise the sages, Vidyadharas, and Siddhas who stand established here.

Verse 61 (shiva.uma.1.61)

paśya vṛkṣānmanoramyān snigdhapatrānsugandhinaḥ sarvartukusumairyuktānsadāpuṣpaphalānvitān

Behold the delightful trees, with lustrous leaves and sweet fragrance, adorned with the flowers of every season, ever laden with blossoms and fruit.

Verse 62 (shiva.uma.1.62)

sarvametanmahābāho śaṅkarasya mahātmanaḥ prasādāddevadevasya viśvaṁ bhāvasamanvitam

O mighty-armed one, all of this, endowed with such wondrous being, is by the grace of Shankara, the great-souled God of gods.

Verse 63 (shiva.uma.1.63)

mamāsti tvakhilaṁ jñānaṁ prasādāt śūlapāṇinaḥ bhūtaṁ bhavyaṁ bhaviṣyaṁ ca sarvaṁ jānāmi tattvataḥ

By the grace of the Trident-bearer, I possess complete knowledge; I know in truth all that has been, all that is, and all that shall be.

Verse 64 (shiva.uma.1.64)

I have beheld that God whom even the gods and the lords of the Suras cannot see without worshipping him — who then is more fortunate than I?

Verse 65 (shiva.uma.1.65)

ṣaḍviṁśakamiti khyātaṁ paraṁ tattvaṁ sanātanam evaṁ dhyāyanti vidvāṁso mahatparamamakṣaram

He is known as the twenty-sixth principle, the supreme, eternal reality; thus do the wise meditate upon that great, supreme, imperishable one.

Verse 66 (shiva.uma.1.66)

sarvaṁ tattvavidhānajñaḥ sarvatattvārthadarśanaḥ sa eva bhagavān devaḥ pradhānapuruṣeśvaraḥ

He who knows the ordering of all principles, who perceives the true meaning of all principles — he alone is the Blessed Lord, the Ruler of Prakriti and Purusha.

Verse 67 (shiva.uma.1.67)

yo nijāddakṣiṇātpārśvād brahmāṇaṁ lokakāraṇam vāmādapyasṛjadviṣṇuṁ lokarakṣārthamīśvaraḥ

That Lord who, from his own right side, created Brahma, the cause of the worlds; and from his left side too, created Vishnu, for the protection of the worlds.

Verse 68 (shiva.uma.1.68)

kalpānte caiva samprāpte'sṛjad rudraṁ hṛdaḥ prabhuḥ tataḥ samaharatkṛtsnaṁ jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam

And when the end of the aeon arrived, the Lord created Rudra from his own heart; then Rudra withdrew the entire universe, moving and unmoving.

Verse 69 (shiva.uma.1.69)

yugānte sarvabhūtāni saṁvartaka ivānalaḥ kālo bhūtvā mahādevo grasamānaḥ sa tiṣṭhati

At the end of the age, having become Time, Mahadeva remains devouring all beings, like the fire of cosmic dissolution.

Verse 70 (shiva.uma.1.70)

sarvajñaḥ sarvabhūtātmā savarbhūtabhavodbhavaḥ āste sarvagato devo dṛśyaḥ sarvaiśca daivataiḥ

All-knowing, the Self of all beings, the very source of the origin of all beings — the all-pervading God remains, visible to all the deities.

Verse 71 (shiva.uma.1.71)

atastvaṁ putralābhāya samārādhaya śaṅkaram śīghraṁ prasanno bhavitā śivaste bhaktavatsalaḥ

Therefore, O Krishna, worship Shankara well for the sake of obtaining a son; Shiva, affectionate to his devotees, shall swiftly become gracious to you.
