ajeyaścāmaraścaiva so'dyāpi tapasāṁ nidhiḥ liṅgārcanarato nityaṁ dṛśyate siddhacāraṇaiḥ
Unconquerable and immortal, that treasury of austerity is still today seen, ever devoted to the worship of the Linga, by Siddhas and Charanas.
Verse 59 (shiva.uma.3.59)
mahendraparvate rāmaḥ sthitastapasi tiṣṭhati kalpānte punarevāsāvṛṣisthānamavāpsyati
Rama remains established on Mount Mahendra, engaged in austerity; at the end of the aeon, he shall again attain the state of a sage.
Verse 60 (shiva.uma.3.60)
asitasyānujaḥ pūrvaṁ pīḍayā kṛtavāṁstapaḥ mūlagrāheṇa viśvasya devalo nāma tāpasaḥ
Long ago, the younger brother of Asita, the ascetic named Devala, performed austerity in affliction, gripped, as it were, at the very root by the suffering of the whole world.
Verse 61 (shiva.uma.3.61)
purandareṇa śaptastu tapasvī yaśca susthiram adharmyaṁ dharmamalabhalliṅgamāradhya kāmadam
That ascetic, cursed by Purandara, having worshipped the desire-granting Linga, obtained a steadfast, blessed state even out of that unrighteous curse.
Verse 62 (shiva.uma.3.62)
cākṣuṣasya manoḥ putro mṛgo'bhūttu marusthale vasiṣṭhaśāpād gṛtsamado daṇḍakāraṇya ekalaḥ
The son of Chakshusha Manu became a deer in the desert region; and Gritsamada, by the curse of Vasishtha, became a deer alone in the Dandaka forest.
Verse 63 (shiva.uma.3.63)
hṛdaye saṁsman bhaktyā praṇavena yutaṁ śivam tasmānmṛtyumukhākāro gaṇo mṛgamukho'bhavat
Remembering in his heart, with devotion, Shiva united with the Pranava, he — who had faced death's very jaws — became a deer-faced Gana, an attendant of Shiva.
Verse 64 (shiva.uma.3.64)
ajarāmaratāṁ nītastīrtvā śāpaṁ punaśca saḥ śaṅkareṇa kṛtaḥ prītyā nityaṁ lambodarānugaḥ
Having crossed over the curse, he was brought to a state free from old age and death; Shankar, out of love, made him forever an attendant of Lambodara.
Verse 65 (shiva.uma.3.65)
gārgyāya pradadau śarvo mokṣaṁ ca bhuvi durlabham kāmacārī mahākṣetraṁ kālajñānaṁ maharddhimat
Sharva granted to Gargya liberation, rare on this earth; the power to move at will, a great sacred domain, knowledge of time, and great prosperity.
Verse 66 (shiva.uma.3.66)
catuṣpādaṁ sarasvatyāḥ pāragatvaṁ ca śāśvatam na tulyaṁ ca sahasraṁ tu putrāṇāṁ pradadau śivaḥ
Fourfold knowledge, and eternal mastery over the further shore of Sarasvati, and a thousand unequalled sons — Shiva gave him all of these.
Verse 67 (shiva.uma.3.67)
vedavyāsaṁ tu yogīndraṁ putraṁ tuṣṭaḥ pināka dhṛk parāśarāya ca dadau jarāmṛtyuvivarjitam
And the Bearer of Pinaka, being pleased, gave to Parashara his son Vedavyasa, the lord of yogis, free from old age and death.
Verse 68 (shiva.uma.3.68)
māṇḍavyaḥ śaṅkareṇaiva jīvaṁ dattvā visarjitaḥ varṣāṇāṁ daśa lakṣāṇi śūlāgrādavaropitaḥ
Mandavya was given life by Shankara himself, and was released after being impaled on the point of a stake for ten hundred thousand years.
Verse 69 (shiva.uma.3.69)
daridro brāhmaṇaḥ kaścinnikṣipya guruveśmani putraṁ tu gālavaṁ yaśca pūrvamāsīd gṛhāśramī
A certain poor brahmin, having placed his son Galava in the house of his teacher, who had formerly been a householder —
Verse 70 (shiva.uma.3.70)
gupto vā muniśālāyāṁ bhikṣurāyāti tadgṛham bhāryāmuvāca yaḥ kaścidavaśyaṁ nirdhano yataḥ
— living, as it were, hidden away like one in a hermit's hut, when a mendicant guest comes to his house, being utterly without means, he says to his wife —
Verse 71 (shiva.uma.3.71)
sa tu vācyo bhavatyā ca na dṛśyanta iti priyaḥ atitherāgatasyāpi kiṁ dāsyāmi gṛhe vasan
'You must tell him — ‘he cannot be seen’ — my dear. Living here at home, what indeed could I give to a guest who has come?'
Verse 72 (shiva.uma.3.72)
Once a certain guest, emaciated and parched with hunger and thirst, said to her: 'Where has your husband gone?' And she —
Verse 73 (shiva.uma.3.73)
— said, 'My husband is not to be seen at present.' That sage, knowing the truth with his divine eye, said this to her —
Verse 74 (shiva.uma.3.74)
gṛhasthitaḥ praticchannastatraiva sa mṛto dvijaḥ viśvāmittrābhyanujñātastatputro gālavastathā
'That brahmin, hiding right there in the house, has in fact died.' And thereupon, given leave by Vishvamitra, his son Galava —
Verse 75 (shiva.uma.3.75)
gṛhamāgatya mātuḥ sa śrutvā śāpaṁ sudāruṇam ārādhya śaṅkaraṁ devaṁ pūjāṁ kṛtvā tu śāmbhavīm
— having come to his mother's house and heard of that terrible curse, worshipped the god Shankara, performing the rites sacred to Shambhu,
Verse 76 (shiva.uma.3.76)
gṛhādasau viniṣkrāntaḥ sasmaran śaṅkaraṁ hṛdā atha taṁ tanayaṁ dṛṣṭvā pitā taṁ prāha sāñjalim
and came forth from the house remembering Shankara in his heart. Then, seeing his son, his father spoke to him with joined palms —
Verse 77 (shiva.uma.3.77)
mahādevaprasādācca kṛtakṛtyo'smi kṛtyataḥ dhanavān putravāṁścaiva mṛto'haṁ jīvitaḥ punaḥ
'By the grace of Mahadeva, I have truly become fulfilled; wealthy and blessed with a son am I — though dead, I live once more.'
Verse 78 (shiva.uma.3.78)
iti vaḥ kathitamaśeṣaṁ nāhaṁ śaktaḥ samāsato vyāsāt vaktuṁ śambhośca guṇān śeṣasyāpi na mukhāni syuḥ
Thus have I told you all this without remainder. I am able to recount the virtues of Shambhu neither briefly nor at length — even the thousand mouths of Shesha would not suffice for that.
