tapaścaratsu pṛthvyāmabhavaṁśca mahīruhāḥ arakṣyamāṇāyāṁ pṛthvyāṁ babhūvātha prajākṣayaḥ
— while they performed austerity, great trees grew up over the earth; and, the earth being unprotected, a decline of creatures then occurred.
Verse 31 (shiva.uma.30.31)
tān dṛṣṭvā tu nivṛttāste tapaso labdhasadvarāḥ cukrudhurmuniśārdūla dagdhukāmāstapobalāḥ
Seeing these trees, having ceased from their austerity and having obtained excellent boons, they became enraged, O tiger among sages, and, strengthened by their austerity, desired to burn them up.
Verse 32 (shiva.uma.30.32)

Then, seeing the destruction of the trees, when only a few remained, the mighty King Soma, the Moon, approached and spoke to them.
Verse 34 (shiva.uma.30.34)

Soma said: Restrain your anger, O kings, all you sons of Prachinabarhis; this fair maiden here is the daughter born of the trees.
Verse 35 (shiva.uma.30.35)
bhaviṣyaṁ jānatā sā tu dhṛtā garbheṇa vai mayā bhāryā vo'stu mahābhāgāḥ somavaṁśavivardhinī
Knowing the future, I have held her in my own care; O greatly fortunate ones, let her be your shared wife, she who shall increase the lineage of the Soma-dynasty.
Verse 36 (shiva.uma.30.36)
asyāmutpatsyate vidvān dakṣo nāma prajāpatiḥ sṛṣṭikartā mahātejā brahmaputraḥ purātanaḥ
From her shall be born a learned one named Daksha, a Prajapati — the creator, of great splendor, an ancient son of Brahma.
Verse 37 (shiva.uma.30.37)
yuṣmākaṁ tejasārdhena mama cānena tejasā brahmatejomayo bhūpaḥ prajāḥ saṁvardhayiṣyati
By half of your combined splendor, and by this splendor of mine, that king, full of the radiance of Brahman, shall cause creatures to flourish.
Verse 38 (shiva.uma.30.38)
tataḥ somasya vacanājjagṛhuste pracetasaḥ bhāryāṁ dharmeṇa tāṁ prītyā vṛkṣajāṁ varavarṇinīm
Then, at the word of Soma, those Prachetasas took her, born of the trees, the fair one, as their wife, righteously and with affection.
Verse 39 (shiva.uma.30.39)
tebhyastasyāstu sañjajñe dakṣo nāma prajāpatiḥ so'pi jajñe mahātejāḥ somasyāṁśena vai mune
From them and from her was born a Prajapati named Daksha; he too, O sage, was born of great splendor, indeed through a portion of Soma.
Verse 40 (shiva.uma.30.40)
acarāṁśca carāṁścaiva dvipado'tha catuṣpadaḥ saṁsṛjya manasā dakṣo maithunīṁ sṛṣṭimārabhat
Having mentally created immovable and movable beings, bipeds and quadrupeds, Daksha then began sexual, procreative creation.
Verse 41 (shiva.uma.30.41)
vīraṇasya sutāṁ nāmnā vīraṇīṁ sa prajāpateḥ upayeme suvidhinā sudharmeṇa pativratām
He, the Prajapati, duly married Virani, the devoted, virtuous daughter of Virana, according to proper rite.
Verse 42 (shiva.uma.30.42)
haryaśvānayutaṁ tasyāṁ sutān puṇyānajījanat te viraktā babhūvuśca nāradasyopadeśataḥ
In her he begot ten thousand meritorious sons, the Haryashvas; but they became dispassionate through the teaching of Narada.
Verse 43 (shiva.uma.30.43)
tacchutvā sa punardakṣaḥ subalāśvānajījanat nāmatastanayāṁstasyāṁ sahasraparisaṅkhyayā
Hearing of this, Daksha again begot the Shabalashvas in her, a thousand sons in number by name.
Verse 44 (shiva.uma.30.44)
te'pi bhrātṛpathā yātāstanmunerupadeśataḥ nāgaman pitṛsānnidhyaṁ viraktā bhikṣumārgiṇaḥ
They too followed the path of their brothers, through the teaching of that same sage; having become dispassionate, taking to the mendicant path, they did not return to their father's presence.
Verse 45 (shiva.uma.30.45)
tacchrutvā śāpamākruddho munaye duḥsahaṁ dadau kutracinna labhasveti saṁsthitiṁ kalahapriya
Hearing of this, enraged, he gave a harsh curse to the sage: 'O lover of strife, you shall find no settled abode anywhere!'
Verse 46 (shiva.uma.30.46)
sāntvito'tha vidhātrā hi sa paścādasṛjatstriyaḥ mahājvālāsvarūpeṇa guṇaiścāpi munīśvaraḥ
Then, appeased by the Creator, that lord of sages afterward created daughters, blazing in form and endowed with good qualities.
Verse 47 (shiva.uma.30.47)
dadau sa daśa dharmāya kaśyapāya trayodaśa dve caivaṁ brahmaputrāya dve caivāṅgirase tadā
He gave ten to Dharma, thirteen to Kashyapa; and likewise two to the son of Brahma, and two to Angiras.
Verse 48 (shiva.uma.30.48)
dve kṛśāśvāya viduṣe munaye munisattama śiṣṭāḥ somāya dakṣo'pi nakṣatrākhyā dadau prabhuḥ
Two, O best of sages, he gave to the learned sage Krishashva; the remaining ones, named after the lunar constellations, Daksha the lord gave to Soma.
Verse 49 (shiva.uma.30.49)
tābhyo dakṣasya putrībhyo jātā devāsurādayaḥ bahavastanayāḥ khyātāstaiḥ sarvaiḥ pūritaṁ jagat
From those daughters of Daksha were born gods, demons, and others; many renowned offspring — by all of them the world was filled.
Verse 50 (shiva.uma.30.50)
tataḥ prabhṛti viprendra prajā maithunasambhavāḥ saṅkalpāddarśanātsparśātpūrveṣāṁ sṛṣṭirucyate
From then onward, O lord of brahmins, creatures came into being through sexual union; whereas the creation of the earlier ones is said to have occurred through will, sight, and touch.
Verse 51 (shiva.uma.30.51)
śaunaka uvāca aṅguṣṭhād brahmaṇo jajñe dakṣaścoktastvayā purā kathaṁ prācetasatvaṁ hi punarlebhe mahātapāḥ
Shaunaka said: You earlier said that Daksha was born from the thumb of Brahma. How, then, did that great ascetic again attain the status of a son of the Prachetasas?
Verse 52 (shiva.uma.30.52)
etaṁ me saṁśayaṁ sūta pratyākhyātuṁ tvamarhasi citrametatsa somasya kathaṁ śvaśuratāṁ gataḥ
You are worthy, O Suta, to resolve this doubt of mine. This is wondrous — how did he come to be the father-in-law of Soma?
Verse 53 (shiva.uma.30.53)
sūta uvāca utpattiśca nirodhaśca nityaṁ bhūteṣu vartate kalpe kalpe bhavantyete sarve dakṣādayo mune
Suta said: Origination and cessation constantly occur among beings; in each kalpa, all these — Daksha and the rest, O sage — come into being again.
Verse 54 (shiva.uma.30.54)
imāṁ visṛṣṭiṁ dakṣasya yo vidyātsacarācarām prajāvānāyuṣā pūrṇaḥ svargaloke mahīyate
Whoever knows this creation of Daksha, together with all its movable and immovable beings, becomes blessed with offspring, full of years, and is honored in the world of heaven.
