Suta said: Manu Vaivasvata had nine sons, equal to him in stature; afterward they became greatly exalted, resolute, and devoted to the duties of kshatriyas.
Verse 2 (shiva.uma.36.2)

Ikshvaku, Shibi, Nabhaga, Dhrishta, and Sharyati; Narishyanta, then another Nabhaga, Karusha, and Priyavrata —
Verse 3 (shiva.uma.36.3)
akarotputrakāmastu manuriṣṭiṁ prajāpatiḥ anutpanneṣu putreṣu tatreṣṭyāṁ munipuṅgavaḥ
Manu the Prajapati, desiring a child, performed a sacrificial rite; while sons had not yet been born, O foremost of sages, in that sacrifice,
Verse 4 (shiva.uma.36.4)
sā hi divyāmbaradharā divyābharaṇabhūṣitā divyasaṁhananā caivamilā jajñe hi viśrutā
there was born the renowned Ila, clad in divine garments, adorned with divine ornaments, and of a divine form.
Verse 5 (shiva.uma.36.5)
tāmiḍetyeva hovāca manurdaṇḍadharastathā anugacchasva māmeti tamiḍā pratyuvāca ha
Manu, the wielder of the rod, said to her, 'You are Ida,' and 'Follow me' — to that, Ida replied:
Verse 6 (shiva.uma.36.6)
dharmayuktamidaṁ vākyaṁ putrakāmaṁ prajāpatim iḍovāca mitrāvaruṇayoraṁśairjātāsmi vadatāṁ vara
This righteous reply she gave to the Prajapati who desired a son. Ida said: 'O best of speakers, I was born from the combined portions of Mitra and Varuna.'
Verse 7 (shiva.uma.36.7)
tayoḥ sakāśaṁ yāsyāmi na me'dharme rucirbhavet evamuktvā satī sā tu mitrāvaruṇayostataḥ
'I shall go into their presence; let me have no inclination toward unrighteousness.' Having spoken thus, that virtuous woman then went to Mitra and Varuna.
Verse 8 (shiva.uma.36.8)
gatvāntikaṁ varārohā prāñjalirvākyamabravīt aṁśaistu yuvayorjātā manuyajñe mahāmunī
Having approached them, that lovely woman, with joined palms, spoke: 'O great sages, I was born from the portions of you two, at Manu's sacrifice—'
Verse 9 (shiva.uma.36.9)
āgatā bhavatoranti brūtaṁ kiṁ karavāṇi vām anyān putrān sṛja vibho tairvaṁśaste bhaviṣyati
'—I have come into your presence; tell me, what shall I do for you both?' To Manu they said: 'O mighty one, beget other sons; through them your lineage shall continue.'
Verse 10 (shiva.uma.36.10)
sūta uvāca tāṁ tathāvādinīṁ sādhvīmiḍāṁ manvadhvarodbhavām mitrāvaruṇanāmānau munī ūcaturādarāt
Suta said: To that virtuous Ida, thus speaking, born from Manu's sacrifice, the two sages named Mitra and Varuna spoke with respect:
Verse 11 (shiva.uma.36.11)
mitrāvaruṇāvūcatuḥ anena tava dharmajñe praśrayeṇa damena ca satyena caiva suśroṇi prītau dvau varavarṇini
Mitra and Varuna said: 'O one who knows dharma, O fair one, by this humility, self-restraint, and truthfulness of yours, we two are pleased.'
Verse 12 (shiva.uma.36.12)
āvayostvaṁ mahābhāge khyātiṁ caiva gamiṣyasi manorvaṁśakaraḥ putrastvameva ca bhaviṣyasi
'O most fortunate one, you shall attain fame through us both; and you yourself shall become the son who continues Manu's lineage.'
Verse 13 (shiva.uma.36.13)
sudyumna iti vikhyātastriṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ jagatpriyo dharmaśīlau manuvaṁśavivardhanaḥ
'—renowned as Sudyumna, celebrated in the three worlds, beloved of the world, righteous in conduct, one who increases Manu's line.'
Verse 14 (shiva.uma.36.14)
sūta uvāca nivṛttā sā tu tacchrutvā gacchantī piturantike budhenāntaramāsādya maithunāyopamantritā
Suta said: Having heard this, she turned back, and while going toward her father's presence, encountering Budha along the way, was invited by him to union.
Verse 15 (shiva.uma.36.15)
somaputrāttato jajñe tasyāṁ rājā purūravāḥ putro'tisundaraḥ prājña urvaśīpatirunnataḥ
Then from the son of Soma, upon her was born King Pururavas, a most handsome and wise son, exalted, the husband of Urvashi.
Verse 16 (shiva.uma.36.16)
janayitvā ca sā tatra purūravasamādarāt putraṁ śivaprasādāttu punaḥ sudyumnatāṁ gataḥ
Having given birth there to that son Pururavas with due care, she, by the grace of Shiva, once more became Sudyumna.
Verse 17 (shiva.uma.36.17)
sudyumnasya tu dāyādāstrayaḥ paramadhārmikāḥ utkalaśca gayaścāpi vinatāśvaśca vīryavān
The heirs of Sudyumna were three, most righteous: Utkala, Gaya, and the valiant Vinatashva.
Verse 18 (shiva.uma.36.18)
utkalasyotkalā viprā vinatāśvasya paścimā dikpūrvā muniśārdūla gayasya tu gayā smṛtā
From Utkala came the land of Utkala, of Brahmins; from Vinatashva, the western region; O foremost of sages, the eastern direction from Gaya — Gaya is remembered as his.
Verse 19 (shiva.uma.36.19)
praviṣṭe tu manau tāta divākaratanuṁ tadā daśadhā tatra tatkṣetramakarotpṛthivīmimām
Then, dear one, when Manu merged into the body of the Sun, he divided this earth, that realm, into ten parts.
Verse 20 (shiva.uma.36.20)
ikṣvākuḥ śreṣṭhadāyādo madhyadeśamavāptavān vasiṣṭhavacanādāsītpratiṣṭhānaṁ mahātmanaḥ
Ikshvaku, the foremost heir, obtained the middle region; by the word of Vasishtha, Pratishthana belonged to that great-souled one.
Verse 21 (shiva.uma.36.21)
pratiṣṭhāṁ dharmarājyasya sudyumno'tha tato dadau tatpurūravase prādād rājyaṁ prāpya mahāyaśāḥ
Sudyumna then gave the seat of the righteous kingdom; and, having obtained it, that man of great fame gave it to Pururavas.
Verse 22 (shiva.uma.36.22)
mānavo yo muniśreṣṭhāḥ strīpuṁsorlakṣaṇaḥ prabhuḥ nariṣyantācchakāḥ putrā nabhagasya suto'bhavat
O foremost of sages, that Manava lord, marked by the nature of both woman and man — such was his story. From Narishyanta descended the Shakas; and a son was born to Nabhaga —
Verse 23 (shiva.uma.36.23)
ambarīṣastu bāhleyo bāhlakaṁ kṣetrāmāptavān śaryātermithunaṁ tvāsīdānarto nāma viśrutaḥ
— Ambarisha, son of Bahli, obtained the land of Bahlika. To Sharyati was born a twin pair; the son renowned by the name Anarta.
Verse 24 (shiva.uma.36.24)
putraḥ sukanyā kanyā ca yā patnī cyavanasya hi ānartasya hi dāyādo raibhyo nāma sa raivataḥ
There was a son, and a daughter Sukanya, who indeed became the wife of Chyavana. The heir of Anarta was named Raibhya, who was Revata.
Verse 25 (shiva.uma.36.25)
ānartaviṣaye yasya purī nāma kuśasthalī mahādivyā saptapurīmadhye yā saptamī matā
In the Anarta country was his city named Kushasthali, greatly divine, reckoned as the seventh among the seven sacred cities.
Verse 26 (shiva.uma.36.26)
tasya putraśataṁ tvāsītkakudmī jyeṣṭha uttamaḥ tejasvī subalaḥ pāro dharmiṣṭho brahmapālakaḥ
He had a hundred sons; the eldest and best was Kakudmi — splendid, mighty, supreme, most righteous, protector of Brahmins.
Verse 27 (shiva.uma.36.27)
kakudminastu sañjātā revatī nāma kanyakā mahālāvaṇyasaṁyuktā divyalakṣmīrivāparā
To Kakudmi was born a daughter named Revati, endowed with great beauty, like another divine Lakshmi.
Verse 28 (shiva.uma.36.28)
praṣṭuṁ kanyāvaraṁ rājā kakudmī kanyayā saha brahmaloke vidheḥ samyaksarvādhīśo jagāma ha
To ask about a suitable groom for his daughter, King Kakudmi, together with his daughter, went to Brahmaloka, to the all-ruling Ordainer.
Verse 29 (shiva.uma.36.29)
āvartamāne gāndharve sthito labdhakṣaṇaḥ kṣaṇam śuśrāva tatra gāndharvaṁ nartane brahmaṇo'ntike
While a Gandharva performance was in progress, he stood there, having found the moment, and listened there to the Gandharva music near Brahma's dance.
Verse 30 (shiva.uma.36.30)
What seemed but a moment to him in that time was, in reality, many yugas that had passed; King Kakudmi understood nothing of this, O sages.
Verse 31 (shiva.uma.36.31)
tadāsau vidhimānamya svābhiprāyaṁ kṛtāñjaliḥ nyavedayadvinītātmā brahmaṇe paramātmane
Then, bowing to the Ordainer, with joined palms and a humble mind, he submitted his own purpose to Brahma, the supreme soul.
Verse 32 (shiva.uma.36.32)
tadabhiprāyamākarṇya sa prahasya prajāpatiḥ kakudminaṁ mahārājaṁ samābhāṣya samabravīt
Hearing that purpose, the Prajapati, smiling, addressed the great king Kakudmi and spoke to him:
Verse 33 (shiva.uma.36.33)
brahmovāca śaṛṇu rājan raibhyasuta kakudmin pṛthivīpate madvacaḥ prītitaḥ satyaṁ pravakṣyāmi viśeṣataḥ
Brahma said: 'Listen, O king, son of Raibhya, Kakudmi, lord of the earth. Hear my word — I shall tell you the truth, and in particular, with affection.'
Verse 34 (shiva.uma.36.34)
kālena saṁhṛtāste vai varā ye te kṛtā hṛdi na tadgotraṁ hi tatrāsti kālaḥ sarvasya bhakṣakaḥ
'Those grooms that you had in mind have all been swept away by time; that lineage no longer exists there — Time is the devourer of all.'
Verse 35 (shiva.uma.36.35)
tvatpuryapi hatā puṇyajanaiḥ sā rākṣasairnṛpa aṣṭāviṁśadvāpare'dya kṛṣṇena nirmitā punaḥ
'Even your city has been destroyed by the Punyajanas, those Rakshasas, O king. Today, in the twenty-eighth Dvapara, it has been rebuilt again by Krishna.'
Verse 36 (shiva.uma.36.36)
kṛtā dvārāvatī nāmnā bahudvārā manoramā bhojavṛṣṇyandhakairguptā vāsudevapurogamaiḥ
'It has been made, named Dwaravati, of many gates, beautiful; guarded by the Bhojas, Vrishnis, and Andhakas, led by Vasudeva.'
Verse 37 (shiva.uma.36.37)
tadgaccha tatra prītātmā vāsudevāya kanyakām baladevāya dehi tvamimāṁ svatanayāṁ nṛpa
'Therefore go there, with a glad heart; give this your daughter, O king, to Baladeva, kinsman of Vasudeva.'
Verse 38 (shiva.uma.36.38)
sūta uvāca ityādiṣṭo nṛpo'yaṁ taṁ natvā tāṁ ca purīṁ gataḥ gatān bahūnyugān jñātvā vismitaḥ kanyayā yutaḥ
Suta said: Thus instructed, this king, having bowed to him, went to that city, together with his daughter; learning that many yugas had passed, he was astonished.
Verse 39 (shiva.uma.36.39)
tatastu yuvatīṁ kanyāṁ tāṁ ca svāṁ suvidhānataḥ kṛṣṇabhrātre balāyāśu prādāttatra sa revatīm
Then, that young maiden, his own daughter, he duly, according to proper rite, quickly gave there — that Revati — to Bala, the brother of Krishna.
Verse 40 (shiva.uma.36.40)
Then that great lord went to the divine peak of Meru; that king, established in austerity, worshipped Shiva.
Verse 41 (shiva.uma.36.41)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ tatra sthito bahuyugaṁ brahmaloke sa revataḥ yuvaivāgānmartyalokametannaḥ saṁśayo mahān
The sages said: 'He, Revata, remained in Brahmaloka for many yugas, yet he came to the mortal world still young — this is our great doubt.'
Verse 42 (shiva.uma.36.42)
sūta uvāca na jarā kṣutpipāsā vā vikārāstatra santi vai apamṛtyurna keṣāñcinmunayo brahmaṇoṁ'tike
Suta said: 'Old age, hunger, thirst, or other changes do not exist there; nor does untimely death touch anyone, O sages, in the presence of Brahma.'
Verse 43 (shiva.uma.36.43)
'Therefore that king did not attain old age or death, nor did that daughter. He came there still young, having consulted about a groom for his daughter.'
Verse 44 (shiva.uma.36.44)
gatvā dvārāvatīṁ divyāṁ purīṁ kṛṣṇavinirmitām vivāhaṁ kārayāmāsa kanyāyāḥ sa balena hi
Having gone to the divine city Dwaravati, built by Krishna, he had his daughter's marriage performed with Bala.
Verse 45 (shiva.uma.36.45)
tasya putraśataṁ tvāsīddhārmikasya mahāprabhoḥ kṛṣṇasyāpi sutā jātā bahustrībhyo'mitāstataḥ
That righteous great lord had a hundred sons; and from Krishna too, innumerable children were born of his many wives.
Verse 46 (shiva.uma.36.46)
anvavāyo mahāṁstatra dvayorapi mahātmanoḥ kṣatriyā dikṣu sarvāsu gatā hṛṣṭāḥ sudhārmikāḥ
A great lineage arose there from both those great souls; righteous kshatriyas, filled with joy, spread in all directions.
Verse 47 (shiva.uma.36.47)
iti prokto hi śaryātervaṁśo'nyeṣāṁ vadāmyaham mānavānāṁ hi saṅkṣepācchṛṇutādarato dvijāḥ
Thus has the lineage of Sharyati been declared; I shall now tell of the other sons of Manu — hear, O twice-born, respectfully, in brief.
Verse 48 (shiva.uma.36.48)
nābhāgo diṣṭaputro'bhūtsa tu brāhmaṇatāṁ gataḥ svakṣatravaṁśaṁ saṁsthāpya brahmakarmabhirāvṛtaḥ
Nabhaga became the son of Dishta; he attained the status of a Brahmin, having established his own kshatriya line but himself devoted to Brahminical duties.
Verse 49 (shiva.uma.36.49)
dhṛṣṭāddhārṣṭamabhūtkṣatraṁ brahmabhūyaṁ gataṁ kṣitau karūṣasya tu kārūṣāḥ kṣatriyā yuddhadurmadāḥ
From Dhrishta came the Dharshta kshatriyas, who on earth attained Brahminhood; and from Karusha came the Karushas, kshatriyas fierce in battle.
Verse 50 (shiva.uma.36.50)
nṛgo yo manuputrastu mahādātā viśeṣataḥ nānāvasūnāṁ suprītyā viprebhyaśca gavāṁ tathā
Nriga, who was a son of Manu, was an especially great giver — of various riches, gladly, to Brahmins, and likewise of cattle.
Verse 51 (shiva.uma.36.51)
godānavyatyayādyastu svakubuddhyā svapāpataḥ kṛkalāsatvamāpannaḥ śrīkṛṣṇena samuddhṛtaḥ
But through a mix-up in a cow-gift, by his own poor judgment and his own fault, he fell into the state of a lizard, and was later rescued by Shri Krishna.
Verse 52 (shiva.uma.36.52)
tasyaiko'bhūtsutaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ prayātirdharmavittathā iti śrutaṁ mayā vyāsāttatproktaṁ hi samāsataḥ
He had one excellent son, Prayati, likewise a knower of dharma. Thus have I heard from Vyasa, and thus it has been told, in brief.
Verse 53 (shiva.uma.36.53)
vṛṣaghnastu manoḥ putro gopālo guruṇā kṛtaḥ pālayāmāsa gā yatto rātryāṁ vīrāsanavrataḥ
Vrishaghna, a son of Manu, was appointed by his guru as a cowherd; diligently he guarded the cows at night, observing the vow of the hero's vigil.
Verse 54 (shiva.uma.36.54)
sa ekadāgataṁ goṣṭhe vyāghraṁ gā hiṁsituṁ balī śrutvā gokrandanaṁ buddho hantuṁ taṁ khaḍgadhṛgyayau
One day, a powerful tiger came to the cow-pen to kill the cows; hearing the cows' distress cry, he awoke, and, sword in hand, went to slay it.
Verse 55 (shiva.uma.36.55)
ajānannahanadbabhroḥ śiraḥ śārdūlaśaṅkayā niścakrāma sabhīrvyāghro dṛṣṭvā taṁ khaḍginaṁ prabhum
Not recognizing it in the dark, he struck off the head of a brown cow, suspecting it to be the tiger. The tiger, seeing that lord with the sword, fled away in fear.
Verse 56 (shiva.uma.36.56)
manyamāno hataṁ vyāghraṁ svasthānaṁ sa jagāma ha rātryāṁ tasyāṁ bhramāpanno varṣavātavinaṣṭadhīḥ
Believing the tiger to have been slain, he went back to his place; that night, confused, his judgment ruined by the rain and wind.
Verse 57 (shiva.uma.36.57)
vyuṣṭāyāṁ niśi cotthāya prage tatra gato hi saḥ adrākṣītsa hatāṁ babhruṁ na vyāghraṁ duḥkhito'bhavat
When the night had passed, rising at dawn, he went there, and saw the slain brown cow, not the tiger, and became distressed.
Verse 58 (shiva.uma.36.58)
śrutvā tadvṛttamājñāya taṁ śaśāpa kṛtāgasam akāmato vicāryeti śūdro bhava na kṣatriyaḥ
Hearing and understanding what had happened, the guru cursed him, though he had erred unintentionally: 'Even after due thought I say this — become a shudra, not a kshatriya.'
Verse 59 (shiva.uma.36.59)
evaṁ śaptastu guruṇā kulācāryeṇa kopataḥ niḥsṛtaśca pṛṣadhrastu jagāma vipinaṁ mahat
Thus cursed in anger by his guru, the family preceptor, Prishadhra departed and went into the great forest.
Verse 60 (shiva.uma.36.60)
nirviṇṇaḥ sa tu kaṣṭena virakto'bhūtsa yogavān vanāgnau dagdhadehaśca jagāma paramāṁ gatim
Distressed by that hardship, he became detached, a practitioner of yoga; his body burned in a forest fire, he attained the supreme state.
Verse 61 (shiva.uma.36.61)
kaviḥ putro manoḥ prājñaḥ śivānugrahato'bhavat iha bhuktvā sukhaṁ divyaṁ muktiṁ prāpa sudurlabhām
Kavi, the wise son of Manu, by the grace of Shiva, having enjoyed divine happiness in this world, attained liberation, so difficult to obtain.
