Vaivasvata's Account, in the Recitation of the Manvantaras

Chapter 34All chaptersChapter 36

Verse 1 (shiva.uma.35.1)

sūta uvāca vivasvān kaśyapājjajñe dākṣāyaṇyāṁ mahāṛṣeḥ tasya bhāryābhavatsaṁjñā tvāṣṭrī devī sureṇukā

Suta said: Vivasvan was born to the great sage Kashyapa, by the daughter of Daksha. His wife was Sanjna, daughter of Tvashta, a goddess of exquisite delicacy.

Verse 2 (shiva.uma.35.2)

mune'sahiṣṇunā tena tejasā dussahena ca bhartṛrūpeṇa nātuṣyadrūpayauvanaśālinī

O sage, she, endowed with beauty and youth, could not bear the unbearable, intolerable splendor of her husband's form, and was not pleased by it.

Verse 3 (shiva.uma.35.3)

ādityasya hi tadrūpamasahiṣṇuḥ sutejasaḥ dahyamānā tadodvegamakarodvaravarṇinī

Unable to endure the form of the Sun of great splendor, that fair one, being scorched, then became distressed.

Verse 4 (shiva.uma.35.4)

ṛṣe'syāṁ trīṇyapatyāni janayāmāsa bhāskaraḥ saṁjñāyāṁ tu manuḥ pūrvaṁ śrāddhadevaḥ prajāpatiḥ

O sage, upon her Bhaskara begot three children; upon Sanjna, first, was born Manu, the Prajapati known as Shraddhadeva,

Verse 5 (shiva.uma.35.5)

yamaśca yamunā caiva yamalau sambabhūvatuḥ evaṁ hi trīṇyapatyāni tasyāṁ jātāni sūryataḥ

and Yama and Yamuna, twins, were born. Thus indeed were three children born to her from the Sun.

Verse 6 (shiva.uma.35.6)

saṁvartulaṁ tu tadrūpaṁ dṛṣṭvā saṁjñā vivasvataḥ asahantī tataśchāyāmātmanaḥ sāsṛjacchubhām

But seeing that fully-blazing, orb-like form of Vivasvan, and unable to bear it, Sanjna then created from herself an auspicious shadow-image, Chhaya.

Verse 7 (shiva.uma.35.7)

māyāmayī tu sā saṁjñāmavocadbhaktitaḥ subhe kiṁ karomīha kāryaṁ te kathayasva śucismite

That illusory one, Chhaya, said to Sanjna with devotion: 'O fair one, what shall I do? Tell me your task, O one of pure smile.'

Verse 8 (shiva.uma.35.8)

saṁjñovāca ahaṁ yāsyāmi bhadraṁ te mamaiva bhavanaṁ pituḥ tvayaitadbhavane satyaṁ vastavyaṁ nirvikārataḥ

Sanjna said: 'I shall go to my own father's home, blessings on you. You must truly dwell in this house without any change of behavior, exactly as I would.'

Verse 9 (shiva.uma.35.9)

imau me bālakau sādhū kanyā ceyaṁ sumadhyamā pālanīyāḥ sukhenaiva mama cedicchasi priyam

'These two good boys of mine, and this slender-waisted daughter, must be cared for happily, if you wish to please me.'

Verse 10 (shiva.uma.35.10)

chāyovāca ākeśagrahaṇāddevi sahiṣye'haṁ suduṣkṛtam nākhyāsyāmi mataṁ tubhyaṁ gaccha devi yathāsukham

Chhaya said: 'O goddess, even to the seizing of my hair, I shall endure whatever hardship is done to me; I shall not reveal this arrangement. Go, O goddess, as you please.'

Verse 11 (shiva.uma.35.11)

sūta uvāca ityuktā sā'gamaddevī vrīḍitā sannidhau pituḥ pitrā nirbhartsitā tatra niyuktā sā punaḥ punaḥ

Suta said: Thus addressed, that goddess went, ashamed, into her father's presence; there she was rebuked by her father and repeatedly urged to return.

Verse 12 (shiva.uma.35.12)

agacchadvaḍavā bhūtvācchādya rūpaṁ tataḥ svakam kuruṁstadottarān prāpya nṛṇānyeva cacāra ha

She then went, having concealed her own form, becoming a mare, and wandered indeed among men, having reached the northern Kurus.

Verse 13 (shiva.uma.35.13)

saṁjñāṁ tāṁ tu ravirmatvā chāyāyāṁ susutaṁ tadā janayāmāsa sāvarṇiṁ manuṁ vai savitā kila

The Sun, believing that Chhaya to be Sanjna herself, then begot upon her a fine son — indeed Savita begot Manu Savarni.

Verse 14 (shiva.uma.35.14)

saṁjñānu prārthitā chāyā sā svaputre'pi nityaśaḥ cakārābhyadhikaṁ snehaṁ na tathā pūrvaje sute

That Chhaya, though requested by Sanjna, always showed greater affection toward her own son, and not so much toward the firstborn son, Yama.

Verse 15 (shiva.uma.35.15)

manustasyākṣamattaṁ yamastaṁ naiva cakṣame sa saroṣastu bālyācca bhāvino'rthasya gauravāt

Manu Savarni tolerated her, but Yama did not; he, in his childishness and because of the weight of the destined event, became angry.

Verse 16 (shiva.uma.35.16)

chāyāṁ santarjayāmāsa padā vaivasvato yamaḥ taṁ śaśāpa tataḥ krodhācchāyā tu kaluṣīkṛtā

Yama Vaivasvata threatened Chhaya with his foot raised in anger; Chhaya, thereby provoked and darkened with rage, then cursed him.

Verse 17 (shiva.uma.35.17)

caraṇaḥ patatāmeṣa taveti bhṛśaroṣataḥ yamastataḥ pituḥ sarvaṁ prāñjaliḥ pratyavedayat

'Let this foot of yours fall off!' — she said in intense rage. Yama then, with joined palms, reported everything to his father.

Verse 18 (shiva.uma.35.18)

bhṛśaṁ śāpabhayodvignaḥ saṁjñāvākyairviceṣṭitaḥ mātrā snehena sarveṣu vartitavyaṁ suteṣu vai

Greatly agitated by fear of the curse, and moved by Sanjna's own words about equal care, Yama said: 'A mother should indeed behave with affection toward all her sons —'

Verse 19 (shiva.uma.35.19)

snehamasmāsvapākṛtya kanīyāṁsaṁ bibharti sā tasmānmayodyataḥ pādastadbhavān kṣantumarhati

'—withdrawing her affection from us, she cherishes the younger one. Therefore my foot was raised against her; you should therefore forgive me for that.'

Verse 20 (shiva.uma.35.20)

śapto'hamasmi deveśa jananyā tapatāṁvara tava prasādāccaraṇo na patenmama gopate

'O lord of gods, best of the radiant ones, I have been cursed by my mother; O protector of the world, by your grace let not my foot fall off.'

Verse 21 (shiva.uma.35.21)

savitovāca asaṁśayaṁ putra mahadbhaviṣyatyatra kāraṇam yena tvāmāviśatkrodho dharmajñaṁ satyavādinam

Savita said: 'Without doubt, my son, there is some great cause behind this, by which anger overtook you, who are knower of dharma and a speaker of truth.'

Verse 22 (shiva.uma.35.22)

na śakyate tanmithyā vai kartuṁ mātṛvacastava kṛmayo māṁsamādāya gamiṣyanti mahītale

'That word of your mother cannot be made false; therefore worms shall take a piece of flesh and fall to the earth — thus shall the curse be fulfilled in part.'

Verse 23 (shiva.uma.35.23)

tadvākyaṁ bhavitā satyaṁ tvaṁ ca trātau bhaviṣyasi kuru tāta na sandehaṁ manaścāśvāsya svaṁ prabho

'That word will become true, and yet you shall be preserved. Do not doubt, dear one; console your own mind.'

Verse 24 (shiva.uma.35.24)

sūta uvāca ityuktvā tanayaṁ sūryo yamasaṁjñaṁ munīśvara ādityaścābravīttānttu chāyāṁ krodhasamanvitaḥ

Suta said: O lord of sages, having thus spoken to his son named Yama, the Sun, filled with anger, then spoke to that Chhaya.

Verse 25 (shiva.uma.35.25)

sūrya uvāca he priye kumate caṇḍi kiṁ tvayācaritaṁ kila kintu me'bhyadhikaḥ sneha etadākhyātumarhasi

Surya said: 'O dear one, wicked-minded, fierce woman, what indeed have you done? Yet my affection for you is still greater — you should tell me this truly.'

Verse 26 (shiva.uma.35.26)

sūta uvāca sā ravervacanaṁ śrutvā yathātathyaṁ nyavedayat nirdagdhā kāmaraviṇā sāntvayāmāsa vai tadā

Suta said: She, hearing the Sun's words, told him truly what had happened; troubled by that revelation, the Sun then consoled her.

Verse 27 (shiva.uma.35.27)

tasyāstad vacanaṁ śrutvā sūryā'gāttavaṣṭurantikam papraccha taṁ kva saṁjñeti tvaṣṭā sūryamathābravīt

Having heard her words, the Sun went to the presence of Tvashta and asked him, 'Where is Sanjna?' Tvashta then said to the Sun:

Verse 28 (shiva.uma.35.28)

tvaṣṭovāca tavātitejasā dagdhā idaṁ rūpaṁ na śobhate asahantī ca tatsaṁjñā vane vasati śādvale

Tvashta said: 'Burned by your excessive splendor, this form of yours does not shine, is unbearable; and Sanjna, unable to endure it, dwells in a grassy forest.'

Verse 29 (shiva.uma.35.29)

ślāghyā yogabalopetā yogamāsādya gopate anukūlastu deveśa sandiśyātmamayaṁ matam

'She is praiseworthy, endowed with the power of yoga, having attained yoga, O protector; O lord of gods, being favorable, tell me your own view.'

Verse 30 (shiva.uma.35.30)

rūpaṁ nivartayāmyadya tava kāntaṁ karomyaham sūta uvāca tacchrutvāpagataḥ krodho mārtaṇḍasya vivasvataḥ

'I shall today curtail your form; I shall make it pleasing.' Suta said: Hearing this, the anger of Martanda Vivasvan departed.

Verse 31 (shiva.uma.35.31)

bhramimāropya tattejaḥ śātayāmāsa vai muniḥ tato vibhrājitaṁ rūpaṁ tejasā saṁvṛtena ca

Placing that splendor upon a lathe, the sage Tvashta pared it down; then his form, radiant, its brilliance now contained—

Verse 32 (shiva.uma.35.32)

kṛtaṁ kāntataraṁ rūpaṁ tvaṣṭrā tacchuśubhe tadā tato'dhiyogamāsthāya svāṁ bhāryāṁ hi dadarśa ha

— became more beautiful, made so by Tvashta, and it shone forth then. Thereafter, resorting to yoga, he beheld his own wife.

Verse 33 (shiva.uma.35.33)

adhṛṣyāṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ tejasā niyamena ca so'śvarūpaṁ samāsthāya gatvā tāṁ maithunecchayā

She was unassailable by all beings, through her splendor and her vow; he, the Sun, assuming the form of a horse, went to her with desire for union.

Verse 34 (shiva.uma.35.34)

maithunāya viceṣṭantīṁ parapuṁso'bhiśaṅkayā mukhato nāsikāyāṁ tu śukraṁ tadvyadadhānmune

As she resisted union, suspecting him to be another male, he, O sage, deposited that seed through her mouth into her nostrils.

Verse 35 (shiva.uma.35.35)

devau tataḥ prajāyetāmaśvinau bhiṣajāṁ varau nāsatyau tau ca dasrau ca smṛtau dvāvaśvināvapi

Then were born the two gods, the Ashvins, best of physicians; those two are remembered as Nasatya and Dasra, and also as the two Ashvins.

Verse 36 (shiva.uma.35.36)

tāṁ tu kāntena rūpeṇa darśayāmāsa bhāskaraḥ ātmānaṁ sā tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā prahṛṣṭā patimādarāt

Bhaskara then showed himself to her in his now-beautiful form; she, seeing him, was overjoyed, and reverently embraced her husband.

Verse 37 (shiva.uma.35.37)

patyā tena gṛhaṁ prāgātsvaṁ satī muditānanā mumudāte'tha tau prītyā dampatī pūrvatodhikam

With that husband, the virtuous one, her face joyful, went to her own home; then that couple rejoiced together with love, more than before.

Verse 38 (shiva.uma.35.38)

yamastu karmaṇā tena bhṛśaṁ pīḍitamānasaḥ dharmeṇa rañjayāmāsa dharmarāja imā prajāḥ

But Yama, his mind greatly pained by that deed, as Dharmaraja, thereafter pleased his subjects through righteousness.

Verse 39 (shiva.uma.35.39)

lebhe sa karmaṇā tena dharmarājo mahādyutiḥ pitṝṇāmādhipatyaṁ ca lokapālatvameva ca

By that deed of righteous rule, that Dharmaraja, of great splendor, obtained sovereignty over the Pitrs and the status of a guardian of the world.

Verse 40 (shiva.uma.35.40)

manuḥ prajāpatistvāsītsāvarṇiḥ sa tapodhanaḥ bhāvyaḥ sa karmaṇā tena manoḥ sāvarṇike'ntare

Manu Savarni became a Prajapati, rich in austerity; through that deed, he is destined to become Manu in the manvantara called Savarnika.

Verse 41 (shiva.uma.35.41)

merupṛṣṭhe tapo ghoramadyāpi carate prabhuḥ yavīyasī tayoryā tu yamī kanyā yaśasvinī

Even now, that lord practices fierce austerity upon the ridge of Meru. And the younger of the two, the illustrious daughter Yami,

Verse 42 (shiva.uma.35.42)

abhavatsā saricchreṣṭhā yamunā lokapā vanī manurityucyate loke sāvarṇiriti cocyate

she became the foremost of rivers, Yamuna, protectress of the world, dwelling in the forest. Her brother is called Manu in the world, and also called Savarni.

Verse 43 (shiva.uma.35.43)

ya idaṁ janma devānāṁ śaṛṇuyāddhārayettu vā āpadaṁ prāpya mucyeta prāpnuyātsumahadyaśaḥ

Whoever hears, or holds in memory, this account of the birth of the gods, having encountered misfortune, is released from it, and attains very great fame.
