Verse 1 (shiva.uma.34.1)

शौनक उवाच । मन्वन्तराणि सर्वाणि विस्तरेणानुकीर्तय । यावन्तो मनवश्चैव श्रोतुमिच्छामि तानहम्

śaunaka uvāca manvantarāṇi sarvāṇi vistareṇānukīrtaya yāvanto manavaścaiva śrotumicchāmi tānaham

Shaunaka said: 'Recount to me in full detail all the manvantaras; I wish to hear of as many Manus as there are.'

Verse 2 (shiva.uma.34.2)

सूत उवाच । स्वायम्भुवो मनुश्चैव ततः स्वारोचिषस्तथा । उत्तमस्तामसश्चैव रैवतश्चाक्षुषस्तथा

sūta uvāca svāyambhuvo manuścaiva tataḥ svārociṣastathā uttamastāmasaścaiva raivataścākṣuṣastathā

Suta said: 'Svayambhuva Manu, then Svarochisha; Uttama, Tamasa, Raivata, and likewise Chakshusha —'

Verse 3 (shiva.uma.34.3)

एते च मनवः षट् ते सम्प्रोक्ता मुनिपुङ्गव । वैवस्वतो मुनिश्रेष्ठ साम्प्रतं मनुरुच्यते

ete ca manavaḥ ṣaṭ te samproktā munipuṅgava vaivasvato muniśreṣṭha sāmprataṁ manurucyate

'these six Manus, O foremost of sages, have been named; Vaivasvata, O best of sages, is called the present Manu.'

Verse 4 (shiva.uma.34.4)

सावर्णिश्च मनुश्चैव ततो रौच्यस्तथा परः । तथैव ब्रह्मसावर्णिश्चत्वारो मनवस्तथा

sāvarṇiśca manuścaiva tato raucyastathā paraḥ tathaiva brahmasāvarṇiścatvāro manavastathā

'Then Savarni, and after him Rauchya; and likewise Brahma-savarni — thus four more Manus.'

Verse 5 (shiva.uma.34.5)

तथैव धर्मसावर्णी रुद्रसावर्णिरेव च । देवसावर्णिराख्यात इन्द्रसावर्णिरेव च

tathaiva dharmasāvarṇī rudrasāvarṇireva ca devasāvarṇirākhyāta indrasāvarṇireva ca

'and likewise Dharma-savarni, Rudra-savarni, Deva-savarni, and Indra-savarni also.'

Verse 6 (shiva.uma.34.6)

अतीता वर्तमानाश्च तथैवानागताश्च ये । कीर्तिता मनवश्चापि मयैवैते यथा श्रुताः

atītā vartamānāśca tathaivānāgatāśca ye kīrtitā manavaścāpi mayaivaite yathā śrutāḥ

'Thus have I recounted, as I heard them, these Manus — past, present, and those yet to come.'

Verse 7 (shiva.uma.34.7)

मुने चतुर्दशैतानि त्रिकालानुगतानि ते । प्रोक्तानि निर्मितः कल्पो युगसाहस्रपर्ययः

mune caturdaśaitāni trikālānugatāni te proktāni nirmitaḥ kalpo yugasāhasraparyayaḥ

'O sage, these fourteen manvantaras, spanning the three times, have been declared to you; a kalpa is fashioned from the passing of a thousand yugas.'

Verse 8 (shiva.uma.34.8)

ऋषींस्तेषां प्रवक्ष्यामि पुत्त्रान् देवगणांस्तथा । शृणु शौनक सुप्रीत्या क्रमशस्तान्यशस्विनः

ṛṣīṁsteṣāṁ pravakṣyāmi puttrān devagaṇāṁstathā śaṛṇu śaunaka suprītyā kramaśastānyaśasvinaḥ

'I shall now tell of their sages, their sons, and their classes of gods; listen, O Shaunaka, with delight, to these illustrious ones in order.'

Verse 9 (shiva.uma.34.9)

मरीचिरत्रिर्भगवानङ्गिराः पुलहः क्रतुः । पुलस्त्यश्च वसिष्ठश्च सप्तैते ब्रह्मणः सुताः

marīciratrirbhagavānaṅgirāḥ pulahaḥ kratuḥ pulastyaśca vasiṣṭhaśca saptaite brahmaṇaḥ sutāḥ

'Marichi, Atri, the blessed Angiras, Pulaha, Kratu, Pulastya, and Vasishtha — these seven are the sons of Brahma.'

Verse 10 (shiva.uma.34.10)

उत्तरस्यां दिशि तथा मुने सप्तर्षयस्तथा । यामा नाम तथा देवा आसन्स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे

uttarasyāṁ diśi tathā mune saptarṣayastathā yāmā nāma tathā devā āsansvāyambhuve'ntare

'In the northern direction, O sage, these were the seven sages; and the gods named Yama existed in the Svayambhuva manvantara.'

Verse 11 (shiva.uma.34.11)

आग्नीध्रश्चाग्निबाहुश्च मेधा मेधातिथिर्वसुः । ज्योतिष्मान्धृतिमान्हव्यः सवनः शुभ्र एव च

āgnīdhraścāgnibāhuśca medhā medhātithirvasuḥ jyotiṣmāndhṛtimānhavyaḥ savanaḥ śubhra eva ca

'Agnidhra, Agnibahu, Medha, Medhatithi, Vasu, Jyotishman, Dhritiman, Havya, Savana, and Shubhra —'

Verse 12 (shiva.uma.34.12)

स्वायम्भुवस्य पुत्रास्ते मनोर्दश महात्मनः । कीर्तिता मुनिशार्दूल तत्रेन्द्रो यज्ञ उच्यते

svāyambhuvasya putrāste manordaśa mahātmanaḥ kīrtitā muniśārdūla tatrendro yajña ucyate

'these are declared, O foremost of sages, as the ten great-souled sons of Svayambhuva Manu; there, the Indra was called Yajna.'

Verse 13 (shiva.uma.34.13)

प्रथमं कथितं तात दिव्यं मन्वतरं तथा । द्वितीयं ते प्रवक्ष्यामि तन्निबोध यथातथम्

prathamaṁ kathitaṁ tāta divyaṁ manvataraṁ tathā dvitīyaṁ te pravakṣyāmi tannibodha yathātatham

'Thus, dear one, has the first divine manvantara been told; I shall now tell you the second — attend to it as it truly is.'

Verse 14 (shiva.uma.34.14)

ऊर्जस्तम्भः परस्तम्भ ऋषभो वसुमांस्तथा । ज्योतिष्मान् द्युतिमांश्चैव रोचिष्मान् सप्तमस्तथा

ūrjastambhaḥ parastambha ṛṣabho vasumāṁstathā jyotiṣmān dyutimāṁścaiva rociṣmān saptamastathā

'Urjastambha, Parastambha, Rishabha, Vasuman, Jyotishman, Dyutiman, and Rochishman as the seventh —'

Verse 15 (shiva.uma.34.15)

एते महर्षयो ज्ञेयास्तत्रेन्द्रो रोचनस्तथा । देवाश्च तुषिता नाम स्मृताः स्वारोचिषेंऽतरे

ete maharṣayo jñeyāstatrendro rocanastathā devāśca tuṣitā nāma smṛtāḥ svārociṣeṁ'tare

'these should be known as the great sages of that manvantara; there Rochana was Indra, and the gods were remembered by the name Tushita, in the Svarochisha manvantara.'

Verse 16 (shiva.uma.34.16)

हरिघ्नः सुकृतिर्ज्योतिरयोमूर्तिरयस्मयः । प्रथितश्च मनस्युश्च नभः सूर्यस्तथैव च

harighnaḥ sukṛtirjyotirayomūrtirayasmayaḥ prathitaśca manasyuśca nabhaḥ sūryastathaiva ca

'Harighna, Sukriti, Jyoti, Ayomurti, Ayasmaya, Prathita, Manasyu, Nabha, and likewise Surya —'

Verse 17 (shiva.uma.34.17)

स्वारोचिषस्य पुत्रास्ते मनोर्दश महात्मनः । कीर्तिता मुनिशार्दूल महावीर्यपराक्रमाः

svārociṣasya putrāste manordaśa mahātmanaḥ kīrtitā muniśārdūla mahāvīryaparākramāḥ

'these are declared, O foremost of sages, as the ten great-souled, mighty and valorous sons of Svarochisha Manu.'

Verse 18 (shiva.uma.34.18)

द्वितीयमेतत्कथितं मुने मन्वन्तरं मया । तृतीयं तव वक्ष्यामि तन्निबोध यथातथम्

dvitīyametatkathitaṁ mune manvantaraṁ mayā tṛtīyaṁ tava vakṣyāmi tannibodha yathātatham

'O sage, this second manvantara has thus been told by me; I shall tell you the third — understand it as it truly is.'

Verse 19 (shiva.uma.34.19)

वसिष्ठपुत्राः सप्तासन्वासिष्ठा इति विश्रुताः । हिरण्यगर्भस्य सुता ऊर्जा नाम महौजसः

vasiṣṭhaputrāḥ saptāsanvāsiṣṭhā iti viśrutāḥ hiraṇyagarbhasya sutā ūrjā nāma mahaujasaḥ

'The seven sons of Vasishtha, renowned as the Vasishthas, were the sages there; the sons of Hiranyagarbha, named Urja, were of great might.'

Verse 20 (shiva.uma.34.20)

ऋषयोऽत्र समाख्याताः कीर्त्यमानान्निबोध मे । औत्तमेया ऋषिश्रेष्ठ दश पुत्रा मनोः स्मृताः

ṛṣayo'tra samākhyātāḥ kīrtyamānānnibodha me auttameyā ṛṣiśreṣṭha daśa putrā manoḥ smṛtāḥ

'The sages here have been named; understand from me the ten sons of Manu Auttama, O best of sages, as I recount them.'

Verse 21 (shiva.uma.34.21)

इष ऊर्जित ऊर्जश्च मधुर्माधव एव च । शुचिः शुक्रवहश्चैव नभसो नभ एव च

iṣa ūrjita ūrjaśca madhurmādhava eva ca śuciḥ śukravahaścaiva nabhaso nabha eva ca

'Isha, Urjita, Urja, Madhu, Madhava, Shuchi, Shukravaha, Nabhasya, and Nabha —'

Verse 22 (shiva.uma.34.22)

ऋषभस्तत्र देवाश्च सत्यवेदश्रुतादयः । तत्रेन्द्रः सत्यजिन्नाम त्रैलोक्याधिपतिर्मुने

ṛṣabhastatra devāśca satyavedaśrutādayaḥ tatrendraḥ satyajinnāma trailokyādhipatirmune

'and Rishabha; the gods there were Satya, Vedashruta, and others; there, O sage, the Indra, lord of the three worlds, was named Satyajit.'

Verse 23 (shiva.uma.34.23)

तृतीयमेतत्परमं मन्वतरमुदाहृतम् । मन्वतरं चतुर्थं ते कथयामि मुने शृणु

tṛtīyametatparamaṁ manvataramudāhṛtam manvataraṁ caturthaṁ te kathayāmi mune śaṛṇu

'Thus has this excellent third manvantara been described; I shall now tell you the fourth manvantara, O sage — listen.'

Verse 24 (shiva.uma.34.24)

गार्ग्यः पृथुस्तथा वाग्मी जयो धाता कपीनकः । कपीवान् सप्त ऋषयः सत्या देवगणास्तथा

gārgyaḥ pṛthustathā vāgmī jayo dhātā kapīnakaḥ kapīvān sapta ṛṣayaḥ satyā devagaṇāstathā

'Gargya, Prithu, Vagmi, Jaya, Dhata, Kapinaka, and Kapivan — these were the seven sages; and the gods were the Satyas.'

Verse 25 (shiva.uma.34.25)

तत्रेन्द्रस्त्रिशिखो ज्ञेयो मनुपुत्रान्मुने शृणु । द्यूतिपोतः सौतपस्यस्तपः शूलश्च तापनः

tatrendrastriśikho jñeyo manuputrānmune śaṛṇu dyūtipotaḥ sautapasyastapaḥ śūlaśca tāpanaḥ

'There the Indra should be known as Trishikha; hear now, O sage, the sons of Manu: Dyutipota, Sautapasya, Tapahshula, and Tapana,'

Verse 26 (shiva.uma.34.26)

तपोरतिरकल्माषो धन्वी खड्गी महानृषिः । तामसस्य स्मृता एते दश पुत्रा महाव्रताः

taporatirakalmāṣo dhanvī khaḍgī mahānṛṣiḥ tāmasasya smṛtā ete daśa putrā mahāvratāḥ

'Taporati, Akalmasha, Dhanvi, Khadgi, and Mahanrishi — these are remembered as the ten great-vowed sons of Manu Tamasa.'

Verse 27 (shiva.uma.34.27)

तामसस्यान्तरं चैव मनोर्मे कथितं तव । चतुर्थं पञ्चमं तात शृणु मन्वन्तरं परम्

tāmasasyāntaraṁ caiva manorme kathitaṁ tava caturthaṁ pañcamaṁ tāta śaṛṇu manvantaraṁ param

'Thus has the manvantara of Manu Tamasa, the fourth, been told to you by me; now hear, dear one, the next, the fifth manvantara.'

Verse 28 (shiva.uma.34.28)

देवबाहुर्जयश्चैव मुनिर्वेदशिरास्तथा । हिरण्यरोमा पर्जन्य ऊर्ध्वबाहुश्च सोमपाः

devabāhurjayaścaiva munirvedaśirāstathā hiraṇyaromā parjanya ūrdhvabāhuśca somapāḥ

'Devabahu, Jaya, Muni, Vedashira, Hiranyaroma, Parjanya, Urdhvabahu, and Somapa —'

Verse 29 (shiva.uma.34.29)

सत्यनेत्ररताश्चान्ये एते सप्तर्षयोऽपरे । देवाश्च भूतरजसस्तपःप्रकृतयस्तथा

satyanetraratāścānye ete saptarṣayo'pare devāśca bhūtarajasastapaḥprakṛtayastathā

'and Satyanetra, and others devoted to truth — these other seven sages; and the gods were the Bhutarajasas, whose nature was austerity.'

Verse 30 (shiva.uma.34.30)

तत्रेन्द्रो विभुनामा च त्रैलोक्याधिपतिस्तथा । रैवताख्यो मनुस्तत्र ज्ञेयस्तामससोदरः

tatrendro vibhunāmā ca trailokyādhipatistathā raivatākhyo manustatra jñeyastāmasasodaraḥ

'There the Indra, lord of the three worlds, was named Vibhu; and the Manu there, known as Raivata, should be known as the brother of Tamasa.'

Verse 31 (shiva.uma.34.31)

अर्जुनः पङ्क्तिविन्ध्यो वा दयायास्तनयामुने । महता तपसा युक्ता मेरुपृष्ठे वसन्ति हि

arjunaḥ paṅktivindhyo vā dayāyāstanayāmune mahatā tapasā yuktā merupṛṣṭhe vasanti hi

'Arjuna, Pankti, and Vindhya — the sons of Daya, O sage — endowed with great austerity, dwell indeed upon the ridge of Mount Meru.'

Verse 32 (shiva.uma.34.32)

रुचेः प्रजापतिः पुत्रो रौच्यो नाम मनुः स्मृतः । भूत्या चोत्पादितो देव्यां भौत्यो नामाभवत्सुतः

ruceḥ prajāpatiḥ putro raucyo nāma manuḥ smṛtaḥ bhūtyā cotpādito devyāṁ bhautyo nāmābhavatsutaḥ

'The son of the Prajapati Ruchi is remembered as the Manu named Rauchya; and the son begotten upon the goddess Bhuti was named Bhautya.'

Verse 33 (shiva.uma.34.33)

अनागताश्च सप्तैते कल्पेऽस्मिन् मनवः स्मृताः । अनागताश्च सप्तैव स्मृता दिवि महर्षयः

anāgatāśca saptaite kalpe'smin manavaḥ smṛtāḥ anāgatāśca saptaiva smṛtā divi maharṣayaḥ

'These seven Manus yet to come are reckoned within this kalpa; and seven great sages, likewise yet to come, are reckoned in heaven.'

Verse 34 (shiva.uma.34.34)

कश्यपोऽत्रिर्वसिष्टश्च विश्वामित्रोऽथ गौतमः । जमदग्नीभरद्वाजः सत्रैते ॠष्यः स्मृताः

kaśyapo'trirvasiṣṭaśca viśvāmitro'tha gautamaḥ jamadagnībharadvājaḥ satraite ṝṣyaḥ smṛtāḥ

'Kashyapa, Atri, Vasishtha, Vishvamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni, and Bharadvaja — these seven are remembered as future sages.'

Verse 35 (shiva.uma.34.35)

रामो व्यासस्तथात्रेयो दीप्तिमान्सुबहुश्रुतः । भरद्वाजस्तथा द्रौणिरश्वत्थामा महाद्युतिः

rāmo vyāsastathātreyo dīptimānsubahuśrutaḥ bharadvājastathā drauṇiraśvatthāmā mahādyutiḥ

'Rama, Vyasa, and likewise the son of Atri, radiant and greatly learned; and Bharadvaja's descendant, the son of Drona, Ashvatthama, of great splendor —'

Verse 36 (shiva.uma.34.36)

गौतमस्यात्मजश्चैव शरद्वान् गौतमः कृपः । कौशिको गालवश्चैव रुरुः कश्यप एव च

gautamasyātmajaścaiva śaradvān gautamaḥ kṛpaḥ kauśiko gālavaścaiva ruruḥ kaśyapa eva ca

'and the son of Gautama, Sharadvan, also called Gautama Kripa; Kaushika, Galava, Ruru, and likewise the son of Kashyapa —'

Verse 37 (shiva.uma.34.37)

एते सप्त महात्मानो भविष्या मुनिसत्तमाः । देवाश्चानागतास्तत्र त्रयः प्रोक्ताः स्वयम्भुवा

ete sapta mahātmāno bhaviṣyā munisattamāḥ devāścānāgatāstatra trayaḥ proktāḥ svayambhuvā

'these seven great-souled ones will be the future best of sages; and there, three classes of gods yet to come have been declared by the Self-born.'

Verse 38 (shiva.uma.34.38)

मारीचेश्चैव पुत्रास्ते कश्यपस्य महात्मनः । तेषां विरोचनसुतो बलिरिन्द्रो भविष्यति

mārīceścaiva putrāste kaśyapasya mahātmanaḥ teṣāṁ virocanasuto balirindro bhaviṣyati

'These are the sons of the great-souled Kashyapa, son of Marichi; among them, Bali, the son of Virochana, will be Indra.'

Verse 39 (shiva.uma.34.39)

विषांङ्गश्चावनीवांश्च सुमन्तो धृतिमान्वसुः । सूरिः सुराख्यो विष्णुश्च राजा सुमतिरेव च

viṣāṁṅgaścāvanīvāṁśca sumanto dhṛtimānvasuḥ sūriḥ surākhyo viṣṇuśca rājā sumatireva ca

'Vishvanga, Avanivan, Sumanta, Dhritiman, Vasu, Suri, Surakhya, Vishnu, and King Sumati —'

Verse 40 (shiva.uma.34.40)

सावर्णेश्च मनोः पुत्रा भविष्या दश शौनक । इहाष्टमं हि कथितं नवमं चान्तरं शृणु

sāvarṇeśca manoḥ putrā bhaviṣyā daśa śaunaka ihāṣṭamaṁ hi kathitaṁ navamaṁ cāntaraṁ śaṛṇu

'these will be the ten future sons of Manu Savarni, O Shaunaka. Thus the eighth manvantara has been told here; now hear the ninth.'

Verse 41 (shiva.uma.34.41)

प्रथमं दक्षसावर्णि प्रवक्ष्यामि मनुं शृणु । मेधातिथिश्च पौलस्त्यो वसुः कश्यप एव च

prathamaṁ dakṣasāvarṇi pravakṣyāmi manuṁ śaṛṇu medhātithiśca paulastyo vasuḥ kaśyapa eva ca

'First I shall tell of Manu Daksha-savarni — listen: Medhatithi, son of Pulastya, Vasu, and son of Kashyapa —'

Verse 42 (shiva.uma.34.42)

ज्योतिष्मान् भार्गवश्चैव धृतिमानङ्गिरास्तथा । सवनश्चैव वासिष्ठ आत्रेयो हव्य एव च

jyotiṣmān bhārgavaścaiva dhṛtimānaṅgirāstathā savanaścaiva vāsiṣṭha ātreyo havya eva ca

'Jyotishman, son of Bhrigu, Dhritiman, son of Angiras, Savana, son of Vasishtha, and son of Atri, Havya —'

Verse 43 (shiva.uma.34.43)

पुलहः सप्त इत्येते ऋषयो रौहितेऽन्तरे । देवतानां गणास्तत्र त्रय एव महामुने

pulahaḥ sapta ityete ṛṣayo rauhite'ntare devatānāṁ gaṇāstatra traya eva mahāmune

'and Pulaha — these seven are the sages in the manvantara of Daksha-savarni; there, O great sage, the classes of gods are just three.'

Verse 44 (shiva.uma.34.44)

दक्षपुत्रस्य पुत्रास्ते रोहितस्य प्रजापतेः । धृष्टकेतुर्दीप्तकेतुः पञ्चहस्तो निराकृतिः

dakṣaputrasya putrāste rohitasya prajāpateḥ dhṛṣṭaketurdīptaketuḥ pañcahasto nirākṛtiḥ

'These are the sons of Rohita, the Prajapati, son of Daksha: Dhrishtaketu, Diptaketu, Panchahasta, Nirakriti,'

Verse 45 (shiva.uma.34.45)

पृथुश्रवा भूरिद्युम्नो ऋचीको बृहतो गयः । प्रथमस्य तु सावर्णेर्नव पुत्रा महौजसः

pṛthuśravā bhūridyumno ṛcīko bṛhato gayaḥ prathamasya tu sāvarṇernava putrā mahaujasaḥ

'Prithushrava, Bhuridyumna, Richika, Brihata, and Gaya — these nine sons of the first Savarni are of great might.'

Verse 46 (shiva.uma.34.46)

दशमे त्वथ पर्याये द्वितीयस्यान्तरे मनोः । हविष्मान् पौलहश्चैव प्रकृतिश्चैव भार्गवः

daśame tvatha paryāye dvitīyasyāntare manoḥ haviṣmān paulahaścaiva prakṛtiścaiva bhārgavaḥ

'Now, in the tenth cycle, in the manvantara of the second Savarni Manu: Havishman, son of Pulaha, and Prakriti, son of Bhrigu,'

Verse 47 (shiva.uma.34.47)

आपोमुक्तिस्तथात्रेयो वासिष्ठश्चाव्ययः स्मृतः । पौलस्त्यः प्रयतिश्चैव भामारश्चैव काश्यपः

āpomuktistathātreyo vāsiṣṭhaścāvyayaḥ smṛtaḥ paulastyaḥ prayatiścaiva bhāmāraścaiva kāśyapaḥ

'Apomukti, son of Atri, and Avyaya, remembered as son of Vasishtha; Prayati, son of Pulastya, and Bhamara, son of Kashyapa —'

Verse 48 (shiva.uma.34.48)

अङ्गिरानेनसः सत्यः सप्तैते परमर्षयः । देवतानां गणाश्चापि द्विषिमन्तश्च ये स्मृताः

aṅgirānenasaḥ satyaḥ saptaite paramarṣayaḥ devatānāṁ gaṇāścāpi dviṣimantaśca ye smṛtāḥ

'and Satya, son of Angiras, free from sin — these seven are the supreme sages; and the classes of gods there are remembered as the Dvishimants.'

Verse 49 (shiva.uma.34.49)

तेषामिन्द्रः स्मृतः शम्भुस्त्वयमेव महेश्वरः । अक्षत्वानुत्तमौजाश्च भूरिषेणश्च वीर्यवान्

teṣāmindraḥ smṛtaḥ śambhustvayameva maheśvaraḥ akṣatvānuttamaujāśca bhūriṣeṇaśca vīryavān

'Their Indra is remembered as Shambhu, this very Maheshvara; Akshatva, Uttamaujas, and the valiant Bhurishena —'

Verse 50 (shiva.uma.34.50)

शतानीको निरामित्रो वृषसेनो जयद्रथः । भूरिद्युम्नः सुवर्चार्चिर्दश त्वेते मनोः सुताः

śatānīko nirāmitro vṛṣaseno jayadrathaḥ bhūridyumnaḥ suvarcārcirdaśa tvete manoḥ sutāḥ

'Shatanika, Niramitra, Vrishasena, Jayadratha, Bhuridyumna, and Suvarcharchi — these ten are the sons of that Manu.'

Verse 51 (shiva.uma.34.51)

एकादशे तु पर्याये तृतीयस्यान्तरे मनोः । तस्यापि सप्त ऋषयः कीर्त्यमानान्निबोध मे

ekādaśe tu paryāye tṛtīyasyāntare manoḥ tasyāpi sapta ṛṣayaḥ kīrtyamānānnibodha me

'Now in the eleventh cycle, in the manvantara of the third Savarni Manu — understand from me his seven sages as I recount them:'

Verse 52 (shiva.uma.34.52)

हविष्मान् कश्यपश्चापि वपुष्मांश्चैव वारुणः । आत्रेयोऽथ वसिष्ठश्च ह्यनयस्त्वङ्गिरास्तथा

haviṣmān kaśyapaścāpi vapuṣmāṁścaiva vāruṇaḥ ātreyo'tha vasiṣṭhaśca hyanayastvaṅgirāstathā

'Havishman, son of Kashyapa, and Vapushman, son of Varuna, and son of Atri, and son of Vasishtha, and Anaya, son of Angiras,'

Verse 53 (shiva.uma.34.53)

चारुधृष्यश्च पौलस्त्यो निःस्वरोऽग्निस्तु तैजसः । सप्तैते ऋषयः प्रोक्तास्त्रयो देवगणाः स्मृताः

cārudhṛṣyaśca paulastyo niḥsvaro'gnistu taijasaḥ saptaite ṛṣayaḥ proktāstrayo devagaṇāḥ smṛtāḥ

'Charudhrishya, son of Pulastya, and fiery Nihsvara — these seven sages have been declared; and three classes of gods are remembered.'

Verse 54 (shiva.uma.34.54)

ब्रह्मणस्तु सुतास्ते हि त इमे वैधृताः स्मृताः । सर्वगश्च सुशर्मा च देवानीकस्तु क्षेमकः

brahmaṇastu sutāste hi ta ime vaidhṛtāḥ smṛtāḥ sarvagaśca suśarmā ca devānīkastu kṣemakaḥ

'These, indeed, sons of Brahma, are remembered as the Vaidhritas; Sarvaga, Susharma, Devanika, and Kshemaka —'

Verse 55 (shiva.uma.34.55)

दृढेषुः खण्डको दर्शः कुहुर्बाहुर्मनोः स्मृताः । सावर्णस्य तु पुत्रा वै तृतीयस्य नव स्मृताः

dṛḍheṣuḥ khaṇḍako darśaḥ kuhurbāhurmanoḥ smṛtāḥ sāvarṇasya tu putrā vai tṛtīyasya nava smṛtāḥ

'Dridheshu, Khandaka, Darsha, Kuhu, and Bahu are remembered as the nine sons of the third Savarni Manu.'

Verse 56 (shiva.uma.34.56)

चतुर्थस्य तु सावर्णेरृषीन्सप्त निबोध मे । द्युतिर्वसिष्ठपुत्रश्च आत्रेयः सुतपास्तथा

caturthasya tu sāvarṇerṛṣīnsapta nibodha me dyutirvasiṣṭhaputraśca ātreyaḥ sutapāstathā

'Now understand from me the seven sages of the fourth Savarni: Dyuti, son of Vasishtha, and Sutapas, son of Atri,'

Verse 57 (shiva.uma.34.57)

अङ्गिरास्तपसो मूर्तिस्तपस्वी कश्यपस्तथा । तपोधनश्च पौलस्त्यः पुलहश्च तपोरतिः

aṅgirāstapaso mūrtistapasvī kaśyapastathā tapodhanaśca paulastyaḥ pulahaśca taporatiḥ

'Angiras, embodiment of austerity, and the ascetic son of Kashyapa; Tapodhana, son of Pulastya, and Taporati, son of Pulaha,'

Verse 58 (shiva.uma.34.58)

भार्गवः सप्तमस्तेषां विज्ञेयः तपसो निधिः । पञ्च देवगणाः प्रोक्ता मानसा ब्रह्मणः सुताः

bhārgavaḥ saptamasteṣāṁ vijñeyaḥ tapaso nidhiḥ pañca devagaṇāḥ proktā mānasā brahmaṇaḥ sutāḥ

'and the son of Bhrigu, seventh among them, should be known as a treasury of austerity; five classes of gods, mind-born sons of Brahma, have been declared.'

Verse 59 (shiva.uma.34.59)

ऋतधामा तदिन्द्रो हि त्रिलोकी राज्यकृत्सुखी । द्वादशे चैव पर्याये भाव्ये रौच्यान्तरे मुने

ṛtadhāmā tadindro hi trilokī rājyakṛtsukhī dvādaśe caiva paryāye bhāvye raucyāntare mune

'Ritadhama was then the Indra, ruling happily over the three worlds; and in the twelfth cycle, O sage, in the future manvantara of Rauchya —'

Verse 60 (shiva.uma.34.60)

अङ्गिराश्चैव धृतिमान् पौलस्त्यो हव्यवांस्तु यः । पौलहस्तत्त्वदर्शी च भार्गवश्च निरुत्सवः

aṅgirāścaiva dhṛtimān paulastyo havyavāṁstu yaḥ paulahastattvadarśī ca bhārgavaśca nirutsavaḥ

'Angiras, and Dhritiman; and he who is the son of Pulastya, Havyavan; the son of Pulaha, Tattvadarshi, and the son of Bhrigu, Nirutsava,'

Verse 61 (shiva.uma.34.61)

निष्प्रपञ्चस्तथात्रेयो निर्देहः कश्यपस्तथा । सुतपाश्चैव वासिष्ठः सप्तैवैते महर्षयः

niṣprapañcastathātreyo nirdehaḥ kaśyapastathā sutapāścaiva vāsiṣṭhaḥ saptaivaite maharṣayaḥ

'and the son of Atri, Nishprapancha, and the son of Kashyapa, Nirdeha, and the son of Vasishtha, Sutapas — these seven are the great sages of that manvantara.'

Verse 62 (shiva.uma.34.62)

त्रय एव गणाः प्रोक्ता देवतानां स्वयम्भुवा । दिवस्पतिस्तमिन्द्रो वै विचित्रश्चित्र एव च

traya eva gaṇāḥ proktā devatānāṁ svayambhuvā divaspatistamindro vai vicitraścitra eva ca

'Three classes of gods have been declared by the Self-born; Divaspati was the Indra there; and Vichitra and Chitra —'

Verse 63 (shiva.uma.34.63)

नयो धर्मो धृतोन्ध्रश्च सुनेत्रः क्षत्रवृद्धकः । निर्भयः सुतपा द्रोणो मनो रौच्यस्य ते सुताः

nayo dharmo dhṛtondhraśca sunetraḥ kṣatravṛddhakaḥ nirbhayaḥ sutapā droṇo mano raucyasya te sutāḥ

'Naya, Dharma, Dhritondhra, Sunetra, Kshatravriddhaka, Nirbhaya, Sutapa, and Drona — these are the sons of Manu Rauchya.'

Verse 64 (shiva.uma.34.64)

मनुस्त्रयोदशो भाव्यो देवसावर्णिरात्मवान् चित्रसेनविचित्राद्या देवसावर्णिदेहजाः

manustrayodaśo bhāvyo devasāvarṇirātmavān citrasenavicitrādyā devasāvarṇidehajāḥ

'The thirteenth future Manu, the self-possessed Deva-savarni, will arise; Chitrasena, Vichitra, and others will be born of Deva-savarni's own body.'

Verse 65 (shiva.uma.34.65)

देवाः सुकर्मसुत्रामसंज्ञा इन्द्रो दिवस्पतिः निर्मोकतत्त्वदर्शाद्या भविष्यन्त्युषयस्तदा

devāḥ sukarmasutrāmasaṁjñā indro divaspatiḥ nirmokatattvadarśādyā bhaviṣyantyuṣayastadā

'The gods will be named Sukarman and Sutraman; the Indra will be Divaspati; and Nirmoka, Tattvadarsha, and others will then be the sages.'

Verse 66 (shiva.uma.34.66)

चतुर्दशे तु पर्याये भौत्यस्यैवान्तरे मनोः । आग्नीध्रः काश्यपश्चैव पौलस्त्यो मागधश्च यः

caturdaśe tu paryāye bhautyasyaivāntare manoḥ āgnīdhraḥ kāśyapaścaiva paulastyo māgadhaśca yaḥ

'And in the fourteenth cycle, in the manvantara of Manu Bhautya: Agnidhra, son of Kashyapa, and he who is the son of Pulastya, Magadha,'

Verse 67 (shiva.uma.34.67)

भार्गवोऽप्यतिवाह्यश्च शुचिराङ्गिरसस्तथा । युक्तश्चैव तथात्रेयः शुक्रो वाशिष्ठ एव च

bhārgavo'pyativāhyaśca śucirāṅgirasastathā yuktaścaiva tathātreyaḥ śukro vāśiṣṭha eva ca

'and the son of Bhrigu, Ativahya, and Shuchi, son of Angiras; and Yukta, son of Atri, and Shukra, son of Vasishtha,'

Verse 68 (shiva.uma.34.68)

अजितः पुलहश्चैव ह्यन्त्याः सप्तर्षयश्च ते । पवित्राश्चाक्षुषा देवाः शुचिरिन्द्रो भविष्यति

ajitaḥ pulahaścaiva hyantyāḥ saptarṣayaśca te pavitrāścākṣuṣā devāḥ śucirindro bhaviṣyati

'and Ajita, son of Pulaha — these, the last, are the seven sages; the pure gods will be the Chakshushas, and Shuchi will be Indra.'

Verse 69 (shiva.uma.34.69)

एतेषां कल्य उत्थाय कीर्तनात्सुखमेधते । अतीतानागतानां वै महर्षीणां नरैः सदा

eteṣāṁ kalya utthāya kīrtanātsukhamedhate atītānāgatānāṁ vai maharṣīṇāṁ naraiḥ sadā

'By rising at dawn and always reciting the names of these great sages, past and future, a man ever prospers in happiness.'

Verse 70 (shiva.uma.34.70)

देवतानां गणाः प्रोक्ताः शृणु पञ्च महामुने । तुरङ्गभीरुर्बुध्नश्च तनुग्रोऽनुग्र एव च

devatānāṁ gaṇāḥ proktāḥ śaṛṇu pañca mahāmune turaṅgabhīrurbudhnaśca tanugro'nugra eva ca

'Hear, O great sage, the five classes of gods that have been declared: Turangabhiru, Budhna, Tanugra, and Anugra,'

Verse 71 (shiva.uma.34.71)

अतिमानी प्रवीणश्च विष्णुः सङ्क्रन्दनस्तथा । तेजस्वी सबलश्चैव भौत्यस्त्वेते मनोः सुता

atimānī pravīṇaśca viṣṇuḥ saṅkrandanastathā tejasvī sabalaścaiva bhautyastvete manoḥ sutā

'Atimani, Pravina, Vishnu, Sankrandana, Tejasvi, and Sabala — these are the sons of Manu Bhautya.'

Verse 72 (shiva.uma.34.72)

भौमस्यैवाधिकारे वै पूर्णे कल्पस्तु पूर्यते । इत्येतेऽनागतातीता मनवः कीर्तिता मया

bhaumasyaivādhikāre vai pūrṇe kalpastu pūryate ityete'nāgatātītā manavaḥ kīrtitā mayā

'Indeed, when the reign of Bhauma is complete, the kalpa is fulfilled. Thus have these Manus, past and yet to come, been recounted by me.'

Verse 73 (shiva.uma.34.73)

उक्ताः सनत्कुमारेण व्यासायामिततेजसा । पूर्णे युगसहस्रान्ते परिपाल्य स्वधर्मतः

uktāḥ sanatkumāreṇa vyāsāyāmitatejasā pūrṇe yugasahasrānte paripālya svadharmataḥ

'They were told by Sanatkumara, of measureless splendor, to Vyasa — these Manus who, at the end of a full thousand yugas, having ruled according to their own duty,'

Verse 74 (shiva.uma.34.74)

प्रजाभिस्तपसा युक्ता ब्रह्मलोकं व्रजन्ति ते । युगानि सप्रतिस्त्वेकं साग्राण्यन्तरमुच्यते

prajābhistapasā yuktā brahmalokaṁ vrajanti te yugāni sapratistvekaṁ sāgrāṇyantaramucyate

'go, together with their subjects, endowed with austerity, to Brahmaloka. One manvantara, together with its complement of yugas, is called an antara.'

Verse 75 (shiva.uma.34.75)

चतुर्दशैते मनवः कीर्तिताः कीर्तिवर्धनाः । मन्वन्तरेषु सर्वेषु संहारान्ते पुनर्भवः

caturdaśaite manavaḥ kīrtitāḥ kīrtivardhanāḥ manvantareṣu sarveṣu saṁhārānte punarbhavaḥ

'These fourteen Manus, enhancers of fame, have been recounted; in all the manvantaras, rebirth occurs at the end of dissolution.'

Verse 76 (shiva.uma.34.76)

न शक्यमन्तरं तेषां वक्तुं वर्षशतैरपि । पूर्णे शतसहस्रे तु कल्पो निःशेष उच्यते

na śakyamantaraṁ teṣāṁ vaktuṁ varṣaśatairapi pūrṇe śatasahasre tu kalpo niḥśeṣa ucyate

'It is not possible to describe the interval between them even in hundreds of years; when a full hundred thousand is complete, the kalpa is said to be entirely finished.'

Verse 77 (shiva.uma.34.77)

तत्र सर्वाणि भूतानि दग्धान्यादित्यरश्मिभिः । ब्रह्माणमग्रतः कृत्वा सदादित्यगणैर्मुने

tatra sarvāṇi bhūtāni dagdhānyādityaraśmibhiḥ brahmāṇamagrataḥ kṛtvā sadādityagaṇairmune

'There, all beings, burned by the rays of the sun, O sage, placing Brahma at their head, together with the hosts of Adityas,'

Verse 78 (shiva.uma.34.78)

प्रविशन्ति सुरश्रेष्ठ हरिं नारायणं परम् । स्रष्टारं सर्वभूतानां कल्पान्तेषु पुनःपुनः

praviśanti suraśreṣṭha hariṁ nārāyaṇaṁ param sraṣṭāraṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ kalpānteṣu punaḥpunaḥ

'enter, O best of gods, into the supreme Hari Narayana, the creator of all beings, again and again at the ends of the kalpas.'

Verse 79 (shiva.uma.34.79)

भूयोऽपि भगवान् रुद्रः संहर्ता काल एव हि । कल्पान्ते तत्प्रवक्ष्यामि मनोर्वैवस्वतस्य वै

bhūyo'pi bhagavān rudraḥ saṁhartā kāla eva hi kalpānte tatpravakṣyāmi manorvaivasvatasya vai

'And again, the blessed Rudra, who is indeed Time itself, is the destroyer. At the end of the kalpa — I shall now tell of that, concerning Vaivasvata Manu.'

Verse 80 (shiva.uma.34.80)

इति ते कथितं सर्वं मन्वन्तरसमुद्भवम् । विसर्गं पुण्यमाख्यानं धन्यं कुलविवर्द्धनम्

iti te kathitaṁ sarvaṁ manvantarasamudbhavam visargaṁ puṇyamākhyānaṁ dhanyaṁ kulavivarddhanam

Thus has this entire account of the origin of the manvantaras been told to you — a sacred narrative, auspicious, which increases one's lineage.
