Chapter 32All chaptersChapter 34

Verse 1 (shiva.uma.33.1)

sūta uvāca eṣa manvantare tāta sargaḥ svārociṣe smṛtaḥ vaivasvate tu mahati vāruṇe vita te kratau

Suta said: O dear one, this creation is remembered as having occurred in the Svarochisha manvantara; but I shall relate it in the context of that great Varuna sacrifice, extended in the time of the great Vaivasvata manvantara.

Verse 2 (shiva.uma.33.2)

juhvānasya brahmaṇo vai prajāsarga ihocyate pūrvaṁ yānatha brahmarṣīnutpannān sapta mānasān

Here is told the creation of progeny arising from Brahma's oblation; hear now of those seven mind-born brahmarshis, born earlier.

Verse 3 (shiva.uma.33.3)

putrānvai kalpayāmāsa svayameva pitāmahaḥ teṣāṁ virodho devānāṁ dānavānāṁ mahāṝṣe

The Grandsire himself fashioned them as his own sons; among them, O great sage, arose that conflict between the gods and the danavas.

Verse 4 (shiva.uma.33.4)

ditirvinaṣṭaputrā tu kaśyapaṁ samupasthitā sa kaśyapaḥ prasannātmā samgayagārādhitastayā

Diti, her sons having perished, came to Kashyapa; that Kashyapa, his heart pleased, being duly propitiated by her,

Verse 5 (shiva.uma.33.5)

vareṇacchandayāmāsa sā ca vavre varaṁ tadā putramindravadhārthāya samarthamamitaujasam

offered her a boon; and she then chose the boon of a son capable, of measureless might, for the purpose of slaying Indra.

Verse 6 (shiva.uma.33.6)

sa tasyai ca varaṁ prādātprārthitaṁ sumahātapāḥ brahmacaryyādiniyamaṁ prāha caiva śataṁ samāḥ

He, of great austerity, granted her the requested boon, and prescribed for her the observance of celibacy and other vows for a hundred years.

Verse 7 (shiva.uma.33.7)

dhārayāmāsa garbhaṁ tu śuciḥ sā varavarṇinī brahmacaryyādiniyamaṁ ditirdadhre tathaiva vai

That fair one, pure, bore the embryo within her; and Diti likewise kept the vow of celibacy and the other observances.

Verse 8 (shiva.uma.33.8)

tatastvādhāya so dityāṁ garbhaṁ taṁ śaṁsitavrataḥ jagāma kaśyapastaptuṁ tapaḥ saṁhṛṣṭamānasaḥ

Then, having placed that embryo in Diti, Kashyapa, his vow fulfilled, went, his mind rejoicing, to practice austerity.

Verse 9 (shiva.uma.33.9)

tasyāścaivāntaraṁ prepsuḥ so'bhavatpākaśāsanaḥ ūnavarṣe śate cāsyā dadarśāntarameva saḥ

And Indra too kept seeking an opening in her vow; in the hundredth year lacking one, he found just such a chance.

Verse 10 (shiva.uma.33.10)

akṛtvā pādayoḥ śaucaṁ ditirarvākṣirāstadā nidrāmāhārayāmāsa bhāvino'rthasya gauravāt

Diti, without washing her feet, lying with her head turned improperly, fell asleep, through the weight of the fated event to come.

Verse 11 (shiva.uma.33.11)

etasminnantare śakrastasyāḥ kukṣiṁ praviśya saḥ vajrapāṇistu taṁ garbhaṁ saptadhā hi nyakṛntata

In that interval, Shakra, entering her womb, he who bears the thunderbolt, cut that embryo into seven pieces.

Verse 12 (shiva.uma.33.12)

sa pāṭyamāno garbho'tha vajreṇa praruroda ha rudantaṁ saptadhaikaikaṁ mā rodīriti tānpunaḥ cakarta vajrapāṇistānneva mamrustathāpi te

That embryo, being cleft by the thunderbolt, wept aloud; and to each weeping piece, saying 'Do not weep,' the thunderbolt-bearer cut it again, yet still they did not die.

Verse 13 (shiva.uma.33.13)

te tamūcuḥ pāṭyamānāḥ sarve prāñjalayo mune no jighāṁsasi kiṁ śakra bhrātaro marutastava

O sage, all of them, being cut, said to him with joined palms: 'Why, O Shakra, do you wish to slay us? We are your own brothers, the Maruts.'

Verse 14 (shiva.uma.33.14)

indreṇa svīkṛtāste hi bhrātṛtve sarva eva ca tatyajurddaityabhāvaṁ te viprarṣe śaṅkarecchayā

Accepted by Indra as brothers, all of them, O sage among brahmins, abandoned their demon-nature by the will of Shankara.

Verse 15 (shiva.uma.33.15)

maruto nāma te devā babhūvuḥ sumahābalāḥ khagā ekonapañcāśatsahāyā vajrapāṇinaḥ

They became gods named the Maruts, of very great might — forty-nine sky-going companions of the wielder of the thunderbolt.

Verse 16 (shiva.uma.33.16)

teṣāmeva pravṛddhānāṁ hariḥ prādātprajāpatiḥ kramaśastāni rājyāni pṛthupūrvaṁ śaṛṇuṣva tat

To them, thus grown, Hari the Prajapati gave, in due order, their sovereignties, beginning with Prithu — hear that.

Verse 17 (shiva.uma.33.17)

ariṣṭaḥ puruṣo vīraḥ kṛṣṇo jiṣṇuḥ prajāpatiḥ parjanyastu dhanādhyakṣastasya sarvamidaṁ jagat

Arishta, Purusha, Vira, Krishna, Jishnu, Prajapati, and Parjanya, the overseer of wealth — theirs is this whole world.

Verse 18 (shiva.uma.33.18)

bhūtasargamimaṁ samyagavocaṁ te mahāmune vibhāgaṁ śaṛṇu rājyānāṁ kramaśastaṁ bruve'dhunā

I have told you truly this creation of beings, O great sage; now hear the division of their sovereignties, which I shall now relate in order.

Verse 19 (shiva.uma.33.19)

abhiṣicyādhirājye tu pṛthuṁ vainyaṁ pitāmahaḥ tataḥ krameṇa rājyāni vyādeṣṭumupacakrame

Having consecrated Prithu, son of Vena, to the supreme sovereignty, the Grandsire then began to assign, in order, the other sovereignties.

Verse 20 (shiva.uma.33.20)

dvijānāṁ vīrudhāṁ caiva nakṣatragrahayostathā yajñānāṁ tapasāṁ caiva somaṁ rājye'bhyaṣecayat

Soma was consecrated to sovereignty over the twice-born, over plants and creepers, over the constellations and planets, over sacrifices, and over austerities.

Verse 21 (shiva.uma.33.21)

apāṁ tu varuṇaṁ rājye rājñāṁ vaiśravaṇaṁ prabhum ādityānāṁ tathā viṣṇuṁ vasūnāmatha pāvakam

Varuna was consecrated to sovereignty over the waters; the lord Vaishravana over kings; Vishnu over the Adityas; and Pavaka over the Vasus.

Verse 22 (shiva.uma.33.22)

prajāpatīnāṁ dakṣaṁ tu marutāmatha vāsavam daityānāṁ dānavānāṁ ca prahlādamamitaujasam

Daksha over the Prajapatis; Vasava over the Maruts; and Prahlada, of measureless might, over the Daityas and Danavas.

Verse 23 (shiva.uma.33.23)

vaivasvataṁ pitṝṇāṁ ca yamaṁ rājye'bhyaṣecayat mātṝṇāṁ ca vratānāṁ ca mantrāṇāṁ ca tathā gavām

Yama Vaivasvata was consecrated to sovereignty over the Pitrs, and likewise over the Mothers, the sacred vows, the mantras, and the cattle.

Verse 24 (shiva.uma.33.24)

yakṣāṇāṁ rākṣasānāṁ ca pārthivānāṁ tathaiva ca sarvabhūtapiśācānāṁ giriśaṁ śūlapāṇinam

Girisha, the trident-bearer, was consecrated over the Yakshas and Rakshasas, over earthly beings, and over all bhutas and pishachas.

Verse 25 (shiva.uma.33.25)

śailānāṁ himavantaṁ ca nadīnāmatha sāgaram mṛgāṇāmatha śārdūlaṁ govṛṣaṁ tu gavāmapi

Himavan over the mountains; the ocean over the rivers; the tiger over the wild beasts; and the bull over the cattle.

Verse 26 (shiva.uma.33.26)

vanaspatīnāṁ vṛkṣāṇāṁ vaṭaṁ rājye'bhyaṣecayat iti dattaṁ prajeśena rājyaṁ sarvatra vai kramāt

The banyan was consecrated over the forest-trees and plants. Thus was sovereignty bestowed everywhere, in due order, by the Lord of creatures.

Verse 27 (shiva.uma.33.27)

pūrvasyāṁ diśi putraṁ tu vairājasya prajāpateḥ sthāpayāmāsa sarvātmā rājye viśvapatirvibhuḥ

In the eastern direction, the all-souled, all-pervading Lord established in sovereignty the son of the Prajapati Viraja.

Verse 28 (shiva.uma.33.28)

tathaiva muniśārdūla kardamasya prajāpateḥ dakṣiṇasyāṁ tathā putraṁ sudhanvānamacīklṛpat

Likewise, O foremost of sages, in the southern direction he appointed Sudhanvan, son of the Prajapati Kardama.

Verse 29 (shiva.uma.33.29)

paścimāyāṁ diśi tathā rajasaḥ putramacyutam ketumantaṁ mahātmānaṁ rājānaṁ vyādiśatprabhuḥ

And in the western direction, the Lord appointed as king the great-souled Ketumat, unfailing son of Rajas.

Verse 30 (shiva.uma.33.30)

tathā hiraṇyaromāṇaṁ parjanyasya prajāpateḥ udīcyāṁ diśi rājānaṁ durdharṣaṁ so'bhyaṣecayat

And in the northern direction, he consecrated as king Hiranyaroman, unassailable son of the Prajapati Parjanya.

Verse 31 (shiva.uma.33.31)

tasya vistāramākhyātaṁ pṛthorvainyasya śaunaka mahardhyai tadadhiṣṭhānaṁ purāṇaṁ parikīrtitam

Thus, O Shaunaka, has been told the full extent of Prithu, son of Vena — this ancient seat of great prosperity has been fully proclaimed.
