Chapter 37All chaptersChapter 39

Verse 1 (shiva.uma.38.1)

sūta uvāca satyavratastu tadbhaktyā kṛpayā ca pratijñayā viśvāmitrakalatraṁ ca poṣayāmāsa vai tadā

Suta said: Satyavrata, out of that devotion, compassion, and his vow, then supported Vishvamitra's wife and family.

Verse 2 (shiva.uma.38.2)

hatvā mṛgānvarāhāṁśca mahiṣāṁśca vanecarān viśvāmitrāśramābhyāśe tanmāṁsaṁ cākṣipanmune

O sage, killing deer, boars, and buffaloes, forest-roaming animals, he would throw their flesh near Vishvamitra's hermitage.

Verse 3 (shiva.uma.38.3)

tīrthaṁ gāṁ caiva gātraṁ ca tathaivāntaḥpuraṁ muniḥ yājyopādhyāyasaṁyogādvasiṣṭhaḥ paryarakṣata

The sage Vasishtha, by virtue of his connection as officiating priest and preceptor, protected the sacred bathing-place, the cattle, Satyavrata's person, and the inner chambers.

Verse 4 (shiva.uma.38.4)

satyavratasya vākyādvā bhāvino'rthasya vai balāt vasiṣṭho'bhyadhikaṁ manyuṁ dhārayāmāsa nityaśaḥ

Whether from Satyavrata's words, or by the compelling force of the destined event, Vasishtha ever bore an increasing resentment toward him.

Verse 5 (shiva.uma.38.5)

pitrā tu taṁ tadā rāṣṭrātparityaktaṁ svamātmajam na vārayāmāsa munirvasiṣṭhaḥ kāraṇena ca

And when his own son was thus banished from the kingdom by his father, the sage Vasishtha, for a reason of his own, did not intervene.

Verse 6 (shiva.uma.38.6)

pāṇigrahaṇamantrāṇāṁ niṣṭhā syātsaptame pade na ca satyavratastasya tamupāṁśumabuddhyata

The completion of the marriage vows occurs at the seventh step; but Satyavrata did not understand that technicality of the other marriage.

Verse 7 (shiva.uma.38.7)

tasminsa paritoṣāya piturāsīnmahātmanaḥ kulasya niṣkṛtirvipra kṛtā sā vai bhavediti

For that same reason, O brahmin, he thought it would please his great-souled father, and that the atonement of the family lineage would thereby be accomplished.

Verse 8 (shiva.uma.38.8)

na taṁ vasiṣṭho bhagavānpitrā tyaktaṁ nyavārayat abhiṣekṣyāmyahaṁ putramasya naivābravīnmuniḥ

The blessed Vasishtha did not intervene when he was abandoned by his father; nor did the sage ever say, 'I shall consecrate this son as king.'

Verse 9 (shiva.uma.38.9)

sa tu dvādaśa varṣāṇi dīkṣāṁ tāmudvahad balī avidyāmāne māṁse tu vasiṣṭhasya mahātmanaḥ

That mighty one bore that vow for twelve years; but when meat was unavailable for the great-souled Vasishtha's rites—

Verse 10 (shiva.uma.38.10)

sarvakāmaduhāṁ dogdhrīṁ dadarśa sa nṛpātmajaḥ tāṁ vai krodhācca lobhācca śramādvai ca kṣudhānvitaḥ

—that prince saw the wish-fulfilling cow, Vasishtha's Kamadhenu; out of anger, greed, exhaustion, and hunger—

Verse 11 (shiva.uma.38.11)

dāśadharmagato rājā tāṁ jaghāna sa vai mune sa taṁ māṁsaṁ svayaṁ caiva viśvāmitrasya cātmajam

—the prince, resorting to the outcaste's way, slew her, O sage; he then fed that flesh to himself and to Vishvamitra's son, Galava—

Verse 12 (shiva.uma.38.12)

bhojayāmāsa tacchrutvā vasiṣṭho hyasya cukrudhe uvāca ca muniśreṣṭhastaṁ tadā krodhasaṁyutaḥ

—fed. Hearing of this, Vasishtha became enraged at him; and that foremost of sages, filled with anger, then said to him:

Verse 13 (shiva.uma.38.13)

vasiṣṭha uvāca pātayeyamahaṁ krūra tava śaṅkumaśaṁsayam yadi te dvāvimau śaṅkū nasyātāṁ vai kṛtau purā

Vasishtha said: 'O cruel one, I would strike you down without hesitation, were it not that these two stakes of merit had already been earned by you before—'

Verse 14 (shiva.uma.38.14)

pituścāparitoṣeṇa gurordogdhrīvadhena ca aprokṣitopayogācca trividhaste vyatikramaḥ

'—nonetheless, by displeasing your father, by killing your guru's milk-cow, and by consuming meat without proper consecration — you have committed a threefold transgression.'

Verse 15 (shiva.uma.38.15)

triśaṅkuriti hovāca triśaṅkuriti sa smṛtaḥ viśvāmitrastu dārāṇāmāgato bharaṇe kṛte

'You shall be called Trishanku' — thus he said, and by that name he became known. Vishvamitra then, having returned once his wife's support had been arranged—

Verse 16 (shiva.uma.38.16)

tena tasmai varaṁ prādānmuniḥ prītastriśaṅkave chandyamāno vareṇātha varaṁ vavre nṛpātmajaḥ

—and, pleased by that act of support, the sage granted a boon to Trishanku; being offered a choice, the prince chose his boon.

Verse 17 (shiva.uma.38.17)

anāvṛṣṭibhaye cāsmiñjāte dvādaśavārṣike abhiṣicya pitū rājye yājayāmāsa taṁ muniḥ

And when that twelve-year fear of drought had arisen, the sage Vishvamitra, having consecrated him in his father's kingdom, performed sacrifices on his behalf.

Verse 18 (shiva.uma.38.18)

miṣatāṁ devatānāṁ ca vasiṣṭhasya ca kauśikaḥ saśarīraṁ tadā taṁ tu divamārohayatprabhuḥ

While the gods and Vasishtha looked on, Kaushika, the mighty lord, then caused him to ascend to heaven in his own mortal body.

Verse 19 (shiva.uma.38.19)

tasya satyarathā nāma bhāryā kekayavaṁśajā kumāraṁ janayāmāsa hariścandramakalmaṣam

His wife, named Satyaratha, born of the Kekaya lineage, bore a son, the stainless Harishchandra.

Verse 20 (shiva.uma.38.20)

sa vai rājā hariścandro traiśaṅkava iti smṛtaḥ āhartā rājasūyasya samrāḍiti ha viśrutaḥ

That King Harishchandra is remembered as Traishankava; he performed the Rajasuya sacrifice, and was renowned as Samrat, the universal emperor.

Verse 21 (shiva.uma.38.21)

hariścandrasya hi suto rohito nāma viśrutaḥ rohitasya vṛkaḥ putro vṛkād bāhustu jajñivān

The son of Harishchandra was renowned by the name Rohita; the son of Rohita was Vrika; from Vrika was born Bahu.

Verse 22 (shiva.uma.38.22)

haihayāstālajaṅghāśca nirasyanti sma taṁ nṛpam nātyarthe dhārmiko viprāḥ sa hi dharmayuge'bhavat

The Haihayas and Talajanghas drove out that king; O brahmins, he was not exceedingly righteous, for he lived in an age when strict dharma prevailed.

Verse 23 (shiva.uma.38.23)

sagaraṁ sa sutaṁ bāhurjajñe saha gareṇa vai aurvasyāśramamāsādya bhārgaveṇābhirakṣitaḥ

Bahu begot a son, Sagara, born together with poison; having reached the hermitage of Aurva, he was protected by that descendant of Bhrigu.

Verse 24 (shiva.uma.38.24)

āgneyamastraṁ labdhvā ca bhārgavātsagaro nṛpaḥ jigāya pṛthivīṁ hatvā tālajaṅghānsa haihayāna

Having obtained the fire-weapon from that descendant of Bhrigu, King Sagara conquered the earth, slaying the Talajanghas and the Haihayas.

Verse 25 (shiva.uma.38.25)

Having subdued the Shakas, the Bahudakas, the Paradas together with their hordes, and the Khashas, he established righteous dharma and ruled the earth like a bull, with strength.
