Chapter 45All chaptersChapter 47

Verse 1 (shiva.uma.46.1)

ṛṣiruvāca āsīdrambhāsuro nāma daityavaṁśaśiromaṇiḥ tasmājjāto mahātejā mahiṣo nāma dānavaḥ

The sage said: There was a demon named Rambha, the crown-jewel of the demon race; from him was born a mighty and radiant demon named Mahisha.

Verse 2 (shiva.uma.46.2)

sa saṅgrāme surānsarvānnirjitya danujādhipaḥ cakāra rājyaṁ svarloke mahendrāsanasaṁsthitaḥ

That lord of demons, having conquered all the gods in battle, ruled over heaven, seated upon the very throne of Mahendra.

Verse 3 (shiva.uma.46.3)

parājitāstato devā brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ brahmāpi tānsamādāya yayau yatra vṛṣākapī

Then the defeated gods took refuge with Brahmā; and Brahmā too, taking them with him, went to where Shankara and Keshava dwelt.

Verse 4 (shiva.uma.46.4)

tatra gatvā surāḥ sarve natvā śaṅkarakeśavau svavṛttaṁ kathāyāmāsuryathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ

Having gone there, all the gods bowed to Shankara and Keshava and related their whole condition to them, in due order, exactly as it stood.

Verse 5 (shiva.uma.46.5)

bhagavantau vayaṁ sarve mahiṣeṇa durātmanā ujjāsitāśca svarlokānnirjitya samarāṅgaṇe

"O blessed lords, all of us have been driven out of the heavenly world, defeated in the battlefield by that evil-souled Mahisha.

Verse 6 (shiva.uma.46.6)

bhramāmo martyaloke'sminna labhemahiśaṁ kvacit kāṁ kāṁ na durdaśāṁ nītā devā indrapurogamāḥ

We wander here in this world of mortals, finding refuge nowhere; to what depths of misfortune we gods, with Indra at our head, have been brought!

Verse 7 (shiva.uma.46.7)

sūryācandramasau pāśī kubero yama eva ca indrāgnivātagandharvā vidyādharasucāraṇāḥ

The Sun and the Moon, Varuna the noose-bearer, Kubera, and Yama too, Indra, Agni, Vāyu, the gandharvas, the vidyādharas, and the noble chāraṇas —

Verse 8 (shiva.uma.46.8)

eteṣāmapareṣāṁ ca vidheyaṁ karma so'suraḥ svayaṁ karoti pāpātmā daityapakṣābhayaṅkara

the office of each of these, and of others too, that sinful demon now himself performs — O lord, giver of fearlessness to the demons' faction!

Verse 9 (shiva.uma.46.9)

tasmāccharaṇamāpannāndevānnastrātumarhathaḥ vadhopāyaṁ ca tasyāśu cintayethāṁ yuvāṁ prabhū

Therefore it is you alone who are fit to protect us gods, who have come seeking refuge; may you two lords swiftly devise a means for his destruction."

Verse 10 (shiva.uma.46.10)

iti devavacaḥ śrutvā dāmodarasatīśvarau cakratuḥ paramaṁ kopaṁ roṣāghūrṇitalocanau

Hearing this speech of the gods, Dāmodara (Vishnu) and Shiva were both filled with the greatest fury, their eyes rolling with wrath.

Verse 11 (shiva.uma.46.11)

tato'tikopapūrṇasya viṣṇoḥ śambhośca vaktrataḥ tathānyeṣāṁ ca devānāṁ śarīrānnirgataṁ mahaḥ

Then, from the mouths of the wrathful Vishnu and Shambhu, and from the bodies of the other gods as well, a great splendour issued forth.

Verse 12 (shiva.uma.46.12)

atīva mahasaḥ puñjaṁ jvalantaṁ daśadikṣu ca apaśyaṁstridaśāḥ sarve durgādhyānaparāyaṇāḥ

That exceedingly great mass of splendour, blazing in every direction, all the assembled gods beheld, their minds turned in meditation upon Durgā.

Verse 13 (shiva.uma.46.13)

sarvadevaśarīrotthaṁ tejastadatibhīṣaṇam saṅghībhūyābhavannārī sākṣānmahiṣamardinī

That most terrible splendour, arisen from the bodies of all the gods, gathered itself together and became a woman — the very slayer of Mahishasura in visible form.

Verse 14 (shiva.uma.46.14)

śambhutejasa utpannaṁ mukhamasyāḥ subhāsvaram yāmyena bālā abhavanvaiṣṇavena ca bāhavaḥ

From the splendour of Shambhu was born her most radiant face; from the splendour of Yama came her arms, and from Vishnu's splendour too came arms.

Verse 15 (shiva.uma.46.15)

candramastejasā tasyāḥ stanayugmaṁ vyajāyata madhyamaindreṇa jaṅghorū vāruṇena babhūvatuḥ

From the moon's splendour her pair of breasts came into being; her waist from Indra's splendour, and her thighs and knees from Varuna's splendour.

Verse 16 (shiva.uma.46.16)

bhūtejasā nitambo'bhūd brāhmeṇa caraṇadvayam ārkeṇa caraṇāṅgulyaḥ karāṅgulyaśca vāsavāt

From the earth's splendour her hips arose, from Brahmā's splendour her two feet; from the sun's splendour the toes of her feet, and from Indra's splendour the fingers of her hands.

Verse 17 (shiva.uma.46.17)

kuberatejasā nāsā radanāśca prajāpateḥ pāvakīyena nayanatrayaṁ sāndhyena bhrūdvayam

From Kubera's splendour her nose, and from Prajāpati's splendour her teeth arose; from Agni's splendour her three eyes, and from Sandhyā's splendour her two eyebrows.

Verse 18 (shiva.uma.46.18)

ānilena śravodvandvaṁ tathānyeṣāṁ svarokasām tejasā sambhavā padmālayā sā parameśvarī

From Vāyu's splendour her pair of ears, and from the splendour of the other world-guardians too [other limbs arose] — thus, born from that entire mass of splendour, the supreme goddess Padmālayā (Lakshmi) came forth.

Verse 19 (shiva.uma.46.19)

tato nikhiladevānāṁ tejorāśisamudbhavām tāmālokya surāḥ sarve paraṁ harṣaṁ prapedire

Then, beholding her thus born of the combined splendour of all the gods, every one of the gods was filled with the greatest joy.

Verse 20 (shiva.uma.46.20)

nirāyudhāṁ ca tāṁ dṛṣṭvā brahmādyāstridiveśvarāḥ sāyudhāṁ tāṁ śivāṁ kartuṁ manaḥ sandadhire surāḥ

Seeing her weaponless, Brahmā and the other lords of the three worlds resolved in their minds to make her auspicious by furnishing her with weapons.

Verse 21 (shiva.uma.46.21)

tataḥ śūlaṁ maheśāno maheśānyai samarpayat cakraṁ ca kṛṣṇo bhagavān śaṅkhaṁ pāśaṁ ca pāśabhṛt

Then the great Lord Mahesha offered her the trident; the blessed Krishna, the discus; and Varuna, the noose-bearer, gave her a conch and a noose.

Verse 22 (shiva.uma.46.22)

śaktiṁ hutāśano'yacchanmārutaścāpameva ca bāṇapūrṇeṣudhī caiva vajraghaṇṭe śacīpatiḥ

Agni gave her the spear, and Vāyu, a bow; Indra gave two quivers filled with arrows, and also the thunderbolt and a bell.

Verse 23 (shiva.uma.46.23)

yamo dadau kāladaṇḍamakṣamālāṁ prajāpatiḥ brahmā kamaṇḍaluṁ prādādromaraśmīndivākaraḥ

Yama gave the staff of death, Prajāpati, a rosary; Brahmā offered a water-pot, and the sun, the very rays of his own light.

Verse 24 (shiva.uma.46.24)

kālaḥ khaḍgaṁ dadau tasyai phalakaṁ ca samujvalam kṣīrābdhī ruciraṁ hāramajare ca tathāmbare

Kāla (Time) gave her a sword and a bright, gleaming shield; and the ocean of milk, a lovely necklace and garments that never age.

Verse 25 (shiva.uma.46.25)

cūḍāmaṇiṁ kuṇḍale ca kaṭakāni tathaiva ca arddhacandraṁ ca keyūrānnūpurau ca manoharau

It gave also a crest-jewel and earrings, and bracelets besides; a crescent ornament, armlets, and two lovely anklets.

Verse 26 (shiva.uma.46.26)

graiveyakamaṅgulīṣu samastāsvaṅgulīyakam viśvakarmā ca paraśuṁ dadau tasyai manoharam

It gave a necklace for the throat and rings for all her fingers as well; and Vishvakarmā presented her with a lovely battle-axe.

Verse 27 (shiva.uma.46.27)

astrāṇyanekāni tathābhedyaṁ caiva tanucchadam suramyasarasāṁ mālāṁ paṅkajaṁ cāmbudhirdadau

He gave also many weapons and an impenetrable armour for her body; and the ocean gave her a most lovely garland of lotuses drawn from delightful lakes.

Verse 28 (shiva.uma.46.28)

dadau siṁhaṁ ca himavān ratnāni vividhāni ca surayā pūritaṁ pātraṁ kubero'syai samarpayat

The Himālaya gave her a lion and jewels of every kind; Kubera presented her with a vessel filled with the wine Surā.

Verse 29 (shiva.uma.46.29)

śeṣaśca bhogināṁ netā vicitraracanāñcitam dadau tasyai nāgahāraṁ nānāsanmaṇigumphitam

And Shesha, lord of the serpents, presented her with a serpent-garland adorned with wondrous craftsmanship, strung with every kind of excellent gem.

Verse 30 (shiva.uma.46.30)

etaiścānyaiḥ surairdevī bhūṣaṇairāyudhaistathā satkṛtoccairnanādāsau sāṭṭahāsaṁ punaḥpunaḥ

Thus honoured with these and other ornaments and weapons given by the gods, that goddess roared aloud, again and again, with peals of laughter.

Verse 31 (shiva.uma.46.31)

tasyā bhīṣaṇanādena pūritā ca nabhaḥsthalī pratiśabdo mahānāsīccukṣubhe bhuvanatrayam

By that terrible roar of hers the vault of the sky was filled; its echo was mighty, and the three worlds trembled.

Verse 32 (shiva.uma.46.32)

celuḥ samudrāścatvāro vasudhā ca cacāla ha jayaśabdastato devairakāri mahiṣārditaiḥ

The four oceans shook, and the earth too was made to tremble; then the gods, so long tormented by Mahisha, raised aloud the cry of victory.

Verse 33 (shiva.uma.46.33)

tato'mbikāṁ parāṁ śaktiṁ mahālakṣmīsvarūpiṇīm tuṣṭuvuste surāḥ sarve bhaktigadgadayā girā

Then all the gods, in voices choked with devotion, praised that supreme power Ambikā, who bore the very form of Mahālakṣmī.

Verse 34 (shiva.uma.46.34)

lokaṁ saṅkṣubdhamālokya devatāparipanthinaḥ sannaddhasainikāste ca samuttasthurudāyudhāḥ

Seeing the world in turmoil, the soldiers of the gods' enemies too rose up, ready and armed, weapons in hand.

Verse 35 (shiva.uma.46.35)

Mahisha too, in fury, ran toward that sound; and there he beheld the goddess, her radiance pervading the three worlds.

Verse 36 (shiva.uma.46.36)

etasminnantare tatra mahiṣāsurapālitāḥ samājagmurmahāvīrāḥ koṭiśo dhṛtahetayaḥ

Meanwhile, millions of great warriors, nurtured under Mahishasura, gathered there together, brandishing their weapons.

Verse 37 (shiva.uma.46.37)

cikṣuraścāmarodagrau karāloddhatavāṣkalāḥ tāmrogrāsyogravīryāśca biḍālo'ndhaka eva ca

Chikshura, Chāmara, Udagra, Karāla, Uddhata, Vāṣkala, Tāmra, Ugrāsya, Ugravīrya, Biḍāla, and Andhaka —

Verse 38 (shiva.uma.46.38)

durdharo durmukhaścaiva trinetraśca mahāhanuḥ ete cānye ca bahavaḥ śūrā yuddhaviśāradāḥ

Durdhara, Durmukha, Trinetra, and Mahāhanu — these and many other heroes skilled in war,

Verse 39 (shiva.uma.46.39)

yuyudhuḥ samare devyā saha śastrāstrapāragāḥ itthaṁ kālo vyatīyāya yudhyatorbhīṣaṇastayoḥ

masters of weapons and missiles, joined battle with the goddess on that field; and thus, as the two sides fought their fearsome battle, time passed.

Verse 40 (shiva.uma.46.40)

arivargakarakṣiptā nānāśastrāstrarāśayaḥ mahāmāyāprabhāveṇa viphalā abhavan kṣaṇāt

The masses of various weapons and missiles hurled by the hands of the hostile hordes were, by the power of Mahāmāyā, rendered useless in an instant.

Verse 41 (shiva.uma.46.41)

tato jaghāna sā devī cikṣurapramukhānarīn sagaṇāngadayā bāṇaiḥ śūlaśaktiparaśvadhaiḥ

Then that goddess slew Chikshura and the other foes, together with their hordes, with mace, arrow, trident, spear, and battle-axe.

Verse 42 (shiva.uma.46.42)

evaṁ svīyeṣu sainyeṣu hateṣu mahiṣāsuraḥ devīniḥśvāsasambhūtānbhāvayāmāsa tāngaṇān

Thus, when his armies had been slain, Mahishasura himself charged upon those very hosts born from the goddess's own breath.

Verse 43 (shiva.uma.46.43)

atāḍayatkhuraiḥ kāścitkāścicchṛṅgadvayena ca lāṅgūlena ca tuṇḍena bhinatti sma muhurmuhuḥ

Some he struck down with his hooves, others with his pair of horns, and again and again he tore others apart with his tail and his snout.

Verse 44 (shiva.uma.46.44)

itthaṁ devīgaṇānhatvābhyadhāvatso'surādhipaḥ siṁhaṁ mārayituṁ devyāstato'sau kupito'bhavat

Having thus slain the goddess's hosts, that lord of demons charged to slay the goddess's own lion; and at that she grew exceedingly wrathful.

Verse 45 (shiva.uma.46.45)

kopātso'pi mahāvīryaḥ khurakuṭṭitabhūtalaḥ śṛṅgābhyāṁ śailamutpāṭya cikṣepa praṇanāda ca

Filled with rage, pawing up the earth with his hooves, that mighty demon tore up a mountain with his two horns, hurled it, and bellowed aloud.

Verse 46 (shiva.uma.46.46)

vegena viṣvag bhramatā prakṣiptā guravo'drayaḥ ākāśato mahīmadhye nipeturnṛpasattama

O best of kings, those great mountains, hurled and spinning about with speed, fell from the sky down into the midst of the earth.

Verse 47 (shiva.uma.46.47)

śṛṅgabhinnāḥ payovāhāḥ khaṇḍaṁ khaṇḍamayāsiṣuḥ lāṅgūlenāhataścābdhirviṣvagudvelamaspadat

Clouds, split apart by his horns, went to pieces one by one; and the ocean, struck by his tail, surged and overflowed on every side.

Verse 48 (shiva.uma.46.48)

evaṁ kruddhaṁ samālokya mahiṣāsuramambikā vidadhe tadvadhopāyaṁ devānāmabhayaṅkarī

Beholding Mahishasura thus enraged, Ambikā, the giver of fearlessness to the gods, devised the means for his destruction.

Verse 49 (shiva.uma.46.49)

tataḥ pāśaṁ samutthāpya kṣiptvā tasyoparīśvarī babandha mahiṣaṁ so'pi rūpaṁ tatyāja māhiṣam

Then that sovereign goddess raised her noose, cast it over him, and bound the buffalo-demon; and he at once abandoned his buffalo form.

Verse 50 (shiva.uma.46.50)

tataḥ siṁho babhūvāśu māyāvī tacchiro'mbikā yāvadbhinatti tāvatsa khaṅgapāṇirbabhūva ha

Then that master of illusion swiftly became a lion; and just as Ambikā moved to cut off that head, he became a man bearing a sword.

Verse 51 (shiva.uma.46.51)

sacarmāsikaraṁ taṁ ca devī bāṇairatāḍayat tato gajavapurbhūtvā siṁhaṁ ciccheda śuṇḍayā

The goddess struck that shield-and-sword-bearing man with a shower of arrows; then he took the form of an elephant and began tearing at the lion with his trunk.

Verse 52 (shiva.uma.46.52)

tato'sya ca karaṁ devī cakarta svamahāsinā adhāri ca punā rūpaṁ svakīyaṁ tena rakṣasā

Then the goddess severed his elephant-trunk with her own great sword; and that demon again resumed his own buffalo form.

Verse 53 (shiva.uma.46.53)

tadaiva kṣobhayāmāsa trailokyaṁ sacarācaram tataḥ kruddhā mahāmāyā caṇḍikā mānavikramā

In that very instant he threw the three worlds, with all their moving and unmoving beings, into turmoil; then that Mahāmāyā Chaṇḍikā, enraged, displaying valour worthy of her own true measure —

Verse 54 (shiva.uma.46.54)

papau punaḥ punaḥ pānaṁ jahāsodbhrāntalocanā jagarja cāsuraḥ so'pi balavīryamadoddhataḥ

began to drink her wine again and again, her eyes rolling as she laughed; and that demon too, wild with strength, prowess, and pride, roared aloud.

Verse 55 (shiva.uma.46.55)

tasyā upari cikṣepa śailānutpāṭya so'suraḥ sā ca bāṇāvalīghātaiścūrṇayāmāsa satvaram

That demon tore up mountains and hurled them upon her; and she, with the blows of a stream of arrows, pulverized them at once.

Verse 56 (shiva.uma.46.56)

vāruṇīmadasañjātamukharāgākulendriyā provāca parameśānī meghagambhīrayā girā

Her senses stirred by the flush upon her face from the wine's intoxication, that supreme sovereign goddess spoke in a voice deep as thunder —

Verse 57 (shiva.uma.46.57)

devyuvāca re mūḍha re hataprajña vyarthaṁ kiṁ kuruṣe haṭham na madagre'surāḥ ke'pi sthāsnavo jagatītraye

The Goddess said: "O fool, O dull-witted one, why do you persist so vainly in this obstinacy? No demon in the three worlds shall stand before me."

Verse 58 (shiva.uma.46.58)

ṛṣi ruvāca ekamābhāṣya kūrditvā devī sarvakalāmayī padākramyāsuraṁ kaṇṭhe śūlenogreṇa sābhinat

The sage said: So saying, and leaping forward, the goddess, embodying every art, set her foot upon that demon's throat and pierced him with her fierce trident.

Verse 59 (shiva.uma.46.59)

tatastaccaraṇākrāntaḥ sa svakīyamukhāttataḥ ardhaniṣkrānta evāsīddevyā vīryeṇa saṁvṛtaḥ

Then, pinned beneath her foot, he emerged half out from his own mouth, yet still hemmed in on every side by the goddess's power.
