bharturmamāntikaṁ gaccha no cettvāṁ ghātayāmyaham puṣṭyāsurāṇāṁ sahitaḥ sahasrāṇāṁ nitambini
"Come into my lord's presence, or else I shall slay you; O fair-hipped one, I have come here with an army of thousands of demons."

Those foremost of demons, beholding the goddess mounted upon her lion, adorned with jewels and the like, illumining the very quarters with her radiance, said:
Verse 56 (shiva.uma.47.56)
he devi tarasā mūlaṁ yāhi śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ anyathā ghātayiṣyāmaḥ sagaṇāṁ tvāṁ savāhanām
"O Goddess, come at once into the presence of Shumbha and Nishumbha; otherwise we shall slay you, together with your hosts and your mount.
Verse 57 (shiva.uma.47.57)

vṛṇīṣva taṁ patiṁ vāme lokapālādibhiḥ stutam prapatsyase mahānandaṁ devānāmapi durlabham
Choose him as your husband, who is praised even by the guardians of the world and by others; you shall attain that supreme bliss which is rare even for the gods."
Verse 58 (shiva.uma.47.58)
ityuktamākalayyāmbā smayitvā parameśvarī udājahāra sā devī sūnṛtaṁ rasavadvacaḥ
Hearing this word thus spoken, the supreme sovereign Mother, smiling, uttered a speech both sweet and true:
Verse 59 (shiva.uma.47.59)
devyuvāca advitīyo maheśānaḥ parabrahma sadāśivaḥ yattattvaṁ na vidurvedā viṣṇvādīnāṁ ca kā kathā
The Goddess said: "Maheśa, the eternal Śiva, is the unique supreme Brahman; whose true nature even the Vedas do not know — what then of Vishnu and the rest?
Verse 60 (shiva.uma.47.60)
tasyāhaṁ prakṛtiḥ sūkṣmā kathamanyaṁ patiṁ vṛṇe siṁhī kāmāturā naiva jambukaṁ vṛṇute kvacit
I am his own subtle nature — how then could I choose any other as husband? Even a lioness in her passion never chooses a jackal.
Verse 61 (shiva.uma.47.61)
kareṇurgardabhaṁ naiva dvīpinī śaśakaṁ na vā mṛṣā vadata bho daityo mṛtyuvyālaniyantritāḥ
A she-elephant never chooses a donkey, nor a leopardess a hare; speak not in vain, O demons — you are already bound in the coils of the serpent of death.
Verse 62 (shiva.uma.47.62)
yūyaṁ prayāta pātālaṁ yudhyadhvaṁ śaktirasti cet iti krodhakaraṁ vākyaṁ śrutvocuste parasparam
Go down to Pātāla, or, if you have the strength, do battle." Hearing this wrath-kindling speech, they said to one another —
Verse 63 (shiva.uma.47.63)
abalāṁ manasi jñātvā na hanmo bhavatīṁ vayam atho sthiraihi pañcāsye yuddhecchā mānase'sti cet
"Knowing you to be but a weak woman, we do not strike you down; but if in your heart there is a wish for battle, then stand your ground, O lion-faced one."
Verse 64 (shiva.uma.47.64)
teṣāmevaṁ vivadatāṁ kalahaḥ samavardhata vavṛṣuḥ samare bāṇā ubhayordalayoḥ śitāḥ
Thus, as they disputed with one another, their quarrel grew; and in that battle, sharp arrows rained down from both sides.
Verse 65 (shiva.uma.47.65)
evaṁ taiḥ samaraṁ kṛtvā līlayā parameśvarī jaghāna caṇḍamuṇḍābhyāṁ raktabījaṁ mahāsuram
Thus, having fought with them, the supreme goddess, in her playful sport, slew Chanda, Munda, and the great demon Raktabīja.
Verse 66 (shiva.uma.47.66)
Thus, even though these demons had harboured hatred toward the gods, they attained in the end that same supreme realm to which her own devoted people go.
