Chapter 50All chapters

Verse 1 (shiva.uma.51.1)

munaya ūcuḥ vyāsaśiṣya mahābhāga sūta paurāṇikottama aparaṁ śrotumicchāmaḥ kimapyākhyānamīśituḥ

The sages said: O disciple of Vyasa, greatly fortunate Suta, foremost of Purana-tellers, we wish to hear yet another account of the Sovereign Goddess.

Verse 2 (shiva.uma.51.2)

umāyā jagadambāyāḥ kriyāyogamanuttamam proktaṁ sanatkumāreṇa vyāsāya ca mahātmane

the supreme Kriya Yoga of Uma, Mother of the world, which was declared by Sanatkumara to the great soul Vyasa —

Verse 3 (shiva.uma.51.3)

sūta uvāca dhanyā yūyaṁ mahātmāno devībhaktidṛḍhavratāḥ parāśakteḥ paraṁ guptaṁ rahasyaṁ śṛṇutādarāt

Suta said: Blessed are you, great souls, firm in your vow of devotion to the Goddess; listen with reverence to this supreme, secret mystery of the highest Shakti.

Verse 4 (shiva.uma.51.4)

vyāsa uvāca sanatkumāra sarvajña brahmaputra mahāmate umāyāḥ śrotumicchāmi kriyāyogaṁ mahādbhutam

Vyasa said: O Sanatkumara, all-knowing son of Brahma, great in wisdom, I wish to hear the greatly wondrous Kriya Yoga of Uma.

Verse 5 (shiva.uma.51.5)

kīdṛkca lakṣaṇaṁ tasya kiṁ kṛte ca phalaṁ bhavet priyaṁ yacca parāmbāyāstadaśeṣaṁ vadasva me

What is its nature, and what fruit results from performing it? And whatever is dear to the Supreme Mother — tell me all of that fully.

Verse 6 (shiva.uma.51.6)

sanatkumāra uvāca dvaipāyana yadetattvaṁ rahasyaṁ paripṛcchasi tacchṛṇuṣva mahābuddhe sarvaṁ me varṇayiṣyataḥ

Sanatkumara said: O Dvaipayana, this mystery that you ask of me — listen, O greatly wise one, as I shall describe it all.

Verse 7 (shiva.uma.51.7)

jñānayogaḥ kriyāyogo bhaktiyogastathaiva ca trayo mārgāḥ samākhyātāḥ śrīmāturbhuktimuktidāḥ

Jnana Yoga, Kriya Yoga, and likewise Bhakti Yoga — these three paths are declared, granting both enjoyment and liberation from the Divine Mother.

Verse 8 (shiva.uma.51.8)

jñānayogastu saṁyogaścittasyaivātmanā tu yaḥ yastu bāhyārthasaṁyogaḥ kriyāyogaḥ sa ucyate

That union of the mind with the Self alone is Jnana Yoga; that which is union with external things through action is called Kriya Yoga.

Verse 9 (shiva.uma.51.9)

bhaktiyogo mato devyā ātmanaścaikyabhāvanam trayāṇāmapi yogānāṁ kriyāyogaḥ sa ucyate

The feeling of the oneness of one's own self with the Goddess is held to be Bhakti Yoga; and the practical foundation underlying all three yogas is likewise called Kriya Yoga.

Verse 10 (shiva.uma.51.10)

karmaṇā jāyate bhaktirbhaktyā jñānaṁ prajāyate jñānātprajāyate muktiriti śāstreṣu niścayaḥ

From action devotion is born; from devotion, knowledge arises; from knowledge, liberation is born — this is the settled conclusion of the scriptures.

Verse 11 (shiva.uma.51.11)

pradhānaṁ kāraṇaṁ yogo vimuktermunisattama kriyāyogastu yogasya paramaṁ dhyeyasādhanam

O best of sages, Yoga is the principal cause of liberation; and Kriya Yoga is the supreme means for attaining the goal of Yoga.

Verse 12 (shiva.uma.51.12)

māyāṁ tu prakṛtiṁ vidyānmāyāvī brahma śāśvatam abhinnaṁ tadvapurjñātvā mucyate bhavabandhanāt

Know Maya to be Prakriti, and the possessor of Maya to be the eternal Brahman; knowing that their nature is non-different, one is freed from the bondage of worldly existence.

Verse 13 (shiva.uma.51.13)

yastu devyālayaṁ kuryātpāṣāṇaṁ dāravaṁ tathā mṛnmayaṁ vātha kāleya tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu ahanyahani yogena yajato yanmahāphalam

O son of Kali, whoever builds a temple of the Goddess — of stone, or of wood, or of clay — hear the fruit of merit that is his. The great fruit obtained from daily worship performed through yoga,

Verse 14 (shiva.uma.51.14)

prāpnoti tatphalaṁ devyā yaḥ kārayati mandiram sahasrakulamāgāmi vyatītaṁ ca sahasrakam sa tārayati dharmātmā śrīmāturdhāma kārayan

that same fruit is obtained by one who has a temple built for the Goddess. That righteous soul, by having the abode of the Divine Mother built, saves a thousand generations to come and a thousand gone by.

Verse 15 (shiva.uma.51.15)

koṭijanmakṛtaṁ pāpaṁ svalpaṁ vā yadi vā bahu śrīmāturmandirārambhakṣaṇādeva praṇaśyati

Whatever sin has been accumulated over ten million births, whether small or great, is destroyed the very moment one begins the temple of the Divine Mother.

Verse 16 (shiva.uma.51.16)

nadīṣu ca yathā gaṅgā śoṇaḥ sarvanadeṣu ca kṣamāyāṁ ca yathā pṛthvī gāmbhīrye ca yathodadhiḥ

As the Ganga is foremost among rivers, and the Shona among all the great rivers; as the Earth is foremost in patience, and the Ocean in depth —

Verse 17 (shiva.uma.51.17)

grahāṇāṁ ca samastānāṁ yathā sūryo viśiṣyate tathā sarveṣu deveṣu śrīparāmbā viśiṣyate

and as the Sun excels among all the celestial bodies, so does the Supreme Divine Mother excel among all the gods.

Verse 18 (shiva.uma.51.18)

sarvadeveṣu sā mukhyā yastasyāḥ kārayed gṛham pratiṣṭhāṁ samavāpnoti sa ca janmani janmani

She is foremost among all the gods; whoever has her temple built attains honour and glory birth after birth.

Verse 19 (shiva.uma.51.19)

vārāṇasyāṁ kurukṣetre prayāge puṣkare tathā gaṅgāsamudratīre ca naimiṣe'marakaṇṭake

At Varanasi, at Kurukshetra, at Prayaga, and at Pushkara, on the shore where the Ganga meets the sea, at Naimisha, at Amarakantaka,

Verse 20 (shiva.uma.51.20)

śrīparvate mahāpuṇye gokarṇe jñānaparvate mathurāyāmayodhyāyāṁ dvārāvatyāṁ tathaiva ca

at the greatly sacred Shri Parvata, at Gokarna, at Jnanaparvata, at Mathura, at Ayodhya, and likewise at Dvaravati —

Verse 21 (shiva.uma.51.21)

ityādipuṇyadeśeṣu yatra kutra sthale'pi vā kārayanmāturāvāsaṁ mukto bhavati bandhanāt

in these and other sacred places, or indeed in any place whatsoever, one who has the Mother's abode built becomes freed from bondage.

Verse 22 (shiva.uma.51.22)

iṣṭakānāṁ tu vinyāso yāvadvarṣāṇi tiṣṭhati tāvadvarṣasahasrāṇi maṇidvīpe mahīyate

For as many years as the arrangement of bricks endures, for that many thousand years one is glorified in Manidvipa.

Verse 23 (shiva.uma.51.23)

pratimāḥ kārayedyastu sarvalakṣaṇalakṣitāḥ sa umāyāḥ paraṁ lokaṁ nirbhayo vrajati dhuvam

Whoever has images made, marked with all the correct auspicious signs, goes without fear, certainly, to the supreme world of Uma.

Verse 24 (shiva.uma.51.24)

devīmūrtiṁ pratiṣṭhāpya śubhartugrahatārake kṛtakṛtyo bhavenmartyo yogamāyāprasādataḥ

Having installed the image of the Goddess at an auspicious season, planetary configuration, and constellation, a mortal becomes one whose purpose is fulfilled, by the grace of Yogamaya.

Verse 25 (shiva.uma.51.25)

ye bhaviṣyanti ye'tītā ākalpātpuruṣāḥ kule tāṁstāṁstārayate devyā mūrtiṁ saṁsthāpya śobhanām

Those men of the family who will be born in the future, and those who have gone before since the beginning of the age — all of them are saved by one who installs a beautiful image of the Goddess.

Verse 26 (shiva.uma.51.26)

trilokīsthāpanātpuṇyaṁ yadbhavenmunipuṅgava tatkoṭiguṇitaṁ puṇyaṁ śrīdevīsthāpanādbhavet

O foremost of sages, whatever merit results from establishing images of the three worlds — a merit ten million times greater results from establishing the image of the Divine Goddess.

Verse 27 (shiva.uma.51.27)

madhye devīṁ sthāpayitvā pañcāyatanadevatāḥ caturdikṣu sthāpayedyastasya puṇyaṁ na gaṇyate

Whoever installs the Goddess in the centre, with the five Panchayatana deities in the four directions, his merit cannot be counted.

Verse 28 (shiva.uma.51.28)

viṣṇornāmnāṁ koṭijapād grahaṇe candrasūryayoḥ yatphalaṁ labhyate tasmācchatakoṭiguṇottaram

Than the fruit obtained from ten million recitations of the names of Vishnu during a lunar or solar eclipse, a hundred-crore-times greater fruit is obtained —

Verse 29 (shiva.uma.51.29)

śivanāmno japādeva tasmātkoṭiguṇottaram śrīdevīnāmajāpāttu tataḥ koṭiguṇottaram

than that, the fruit from japa of Shiva's name is ten million times greater; and than that, the fruit from japa of the Divine Goddess's name is ten million times greater still.

Verse 30 (shiva.uma.51.30)

devyāḥ prāsādakaraṇātpuṇyaṁ tu samavāpyate sthāpitā yena sā devī jaganmātā trayīmayī

Merit is obtained from building a temple of the Goddess; by that act, the Goddess, the Mother of the world, whose nature is the three Vedas, becomes truly established.

Verse 31 (shiva.uma.51.31)

na tasya durlabhaṁ kiñcit śrīmātuḥ karuṇāvaśāt vardhante putrapautrādyā naśyatyakhilakaśmalam

Nothing is unattainable for him, by the compassion of the Divine Mother; his sons, grandsons and other descendants flourish, and all impurity is destroyed.

Verse 32 (shiva.uma.51.32)

manasā ye cikīrṣanti mūrtisthāpanamuttamam te'tyumāyāḥ paraṁ lokaṁ prayānti munidurlabham

Those who even mentally intend to establish an excellent image go to the supreme world of Uma, difficult of attainment even by sages.

Verse 33 (shiva.uma.51.33)

kriyamāṇaṁ tu yaḥ prekṣya cetasā hyanucintayet kārayiṣyāmyahaṁ yarhi sampanme sambhaviṣyati

Whoever, seeing it being done by another, thinks in his heart, 'I too shall have this done when wealth comes to me' —

Verse 34 (shiva.uma.51.34)

evaṁ tasya kulaṁ sadyo yāti svargaṁ na saṁśayaḥ mahāmāyāprabhāveṇa durlabhaṁ kiṁ jagattraye

even so, his family instantly goes to heaven, without doubt; by the power of Mahamaya, what indeed is unattainable in the three worlds?

Verse 35 (shiva.uma.51.35)

Those who take refuge solely in the Supreme Mother, the source of the world, should not be regarded as mere humans — they are verily hosts of the Goddess herself.

Verse 36 (shiva.uma.51.36)

ye vrajantaḥ svapantaśca tiṣṭhanto vāpyaharniśam umeti dvyakṣaraṁ nāma bruvate te śivāgaṇāḥ

Those who, while walking, sleeping, or standing, day and night, utter the two-syllabled name 'Uma' — they belong to the very host of Shiva.

Verse 37 (shiva.uma.51.37)

nitye naimittike devīṁ ye yajanti parāṁ śivām puṣpairdhūpaistathā dīpaiste prayāsyantyumālayam

Those who worship the Supreme Goddess with flowers, incense, and lamps, in daily and occasional rites, shall go to the abode of Uma.

Verse 38 (shiva.uma.51.38)

ye devīmaṇḍapaṁ nityaṁ gomayena mṛdāthavā upalimpanti mārjanti te prayāsyantyumālayam

Those who daily plaster and sweep clean the Goddess's shrine-hall with cow-dung or clay shall likewise go to the abode of Uma.

Verse 39 (shiva.uma.51.39)

yairdevyā mandiraṁ ramyaṁ nirmāpitamanuttamam tatkulīnāñjanānmātā hyāśiṣaḥ samprayacchati

To those by whom a beautiful, supreme temple of the Goddess has been built — upon the people of their family the Mother indeed bestows her blessings.

Verse 40 (shiva.uma.51.40)

madīyāḥ śatavarṣāṇi jīvantu premabhājanāḥ nāpadāmayanānītthaṁ śrīmātā vaktyaharniśam

'May those dear to me, objects of my love, live for a hundred years, untouched by any pathway of calamity' — thus the Divine Mother speaks, day and night.

Verse 41 (shiva.uma.51.41)

yena mūrtirmahādebyā umāyāḥ kāritā śubhā narāyutaṁ tatkulajaṁ maṇidvīpe mahīyate

By whom an auspicious image of the great Goddess Uma has been caused to be made, ten thousand persons born in his family are glorified in Manidvipa.

Verse 42 (shiva.uma.51.42)

sthāpayitvā mahāmāyāmūrtiṁ samyakprapūjya ca yaṁ yaṁ prārthayate kāmaṁ taṁ taṁ prāpnoti sādhakaḥ

Having installed the image of Mahamaya and duly worshipped it, whatever desire the practitioner prays for, that he obtains.

Verse 43 (shiva.uma.51.43)

yaḥ snāpayati śrīmātuḥ sthāpitāṁ mūrtimuttamām ghṛtena madhunāktena tatphalaṁ gaṇayettu kaḥ

Who indeed could count the fruit of one who bathes the installed, excellent image of the Divine Mother with ghee mixed with honey?

Verse 44 (shiva.uma.51.44)

candanāgurukarpūramāṁsīmustādiyugjalaiḥ ekavarṇagavāṁ kṣīraiḥ snāpayetparameśvarīm

One should bathe the Supreme Goddess with waters mixed with sandalwood, agaru, camphor, spikenard, musta, and the like, and with the milk of single-coloured cows.

Verse 45 (shiva.uma.51.45)

dhūpenāṣṭādaśāṅgena dadyādāhutimuttamām nīrājanaṁ careddevyāḥ sājyakarpūravartibhiḥ

One should offer an excellent oblation of incense made of eighteen ingredients, and perform the lamp-waving rite for the Goddess with wicks of ghee and camphor.

Verse 46 (shiva.uma.51.46)

kṛṣṇāṣṭamyāṁ navamyāṁ vāmāyāṁ vā pañcadiktithau pūjayejjagatāṁ dhātrīṁ gandhapuṣpairviśeṣataḥ

On the dark eighth, the ninth, or the fifth tithi, one should especially worship the Sustainer of the worlds with sandal-paste and flowers.

Verse 47 (shiva.uma.51.47)

sampaṭhañjananīsūktaṁ śrīsūktamathavā paṭhan devīsūktamatho vāpi mūlamantramathāpi vā

Reciting the Jananī Sukta, or the Shri Sukta, or else the Devi Sukta, or else the root mantra —

Verse 48 (shiva.uma.51.48)

viṣṇukrāntāṁ ca tulasīṁ varjayitvākhilaṁ sumam devīprītikaraṁ jñeyaṁ kamalaṁ tu viśeṣataḥ

excepting the Vishnukranta flower and Tulasi, all flowers should be known as pleasing to the Goddess, and the lotus especially so.

Verse 49 (shiva.uma.51.49)

arpayetsvarṇapuṣpaṁ yo devyai rājatameva vā sa yāti paramaṁ dhāma siddhakoṭibhiranvitam

Whoever offers a golden flower, or one of silver, to the Goddess, goes to the Supreme Abode, accompanied by ten million Siddhas.

Verse 50 (shiva.uma.51.50)

pūjanānte sadā kāryaṁ dāsairenaḥ kṣamāpanam prasīda parameśāni jagadānandadāyini

At the end of worship, servants should always ask forgiveness for their faults, saying, 'Be gracious, O Supreme Sovereign, bestower of joy upon the world.'

Verse 51 (shiva.uma.51.51)

iti vākyaiḥ stuvanmantrī devībhaktiparāyaṇaḥ dhyāyetkaṇṭhīravārūḍhāṁ varadābhayapāṇikām

Praising her with such words, the devout worshipper, devoted to the Goddess, should meditate on her mounted on a lion, her hands showing the boon-gesture and the gesture of fearlessness.

Verse 52 (shiva.uma.51.52)

itthaṁ dhyātvā maheśānīṁ bhaktābhīṣṭaphalapradām nānāphalāni pakvāni naivedyatve prakalpayet

Having thus meditated on the Great Sovereign, who grants the desired fruits to her devotees, one should prepare various ripe fruits as the offering.

Verse 53 (shiva.uma.51.53)

naivedyaṁ bhakṣayedyastu śambhuśakteḥ parātmanaḥ sa nirdhūyākhilaṁ paṅkaṁ nirmalo mānavo bhavet

Whoever eats the offered food of Shambhu's Shakti, the Supreme Self, becomes a pure human being, having shaken off all impurity.

Verse 54 (shiva.uma.51.54)

caitraśuklatṛtīyāyāṁ yo bhavānīvrataṁ caret bhavabandhananirmuktaḥ prāpnuyātparamaṁ padam

Whoever observes the vow of Bhavani on the third day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra becomes freed from the bondage of worldly existence and attains the supreme state.

Verse 55 (shiva.uma.51.55)

asyāmeva tṛtīyāyāṁ kuryāddolotsavaṁ budhaḥ pūjayejjagatāṁ dhātrīmumāṁ śaṅkarasaṁyutām

On this very third day, the wise man should hold the swing-festival, and worship Uma, the Sustainer of the worlds, together with Shankara.

Verse 56 (shiva.uma.51.56)

kusumaiḥ kuṅkumairvastraiḥ karpūrāgurucandanaiḥ dhūpairddīpaiḥ sanaivedyaiḥ sraggandhairaparairapi

With flowers, saffron, garments, camphor, agaru, and sandalwood, with incense and lamps, with offerings of food, with garlands, fragrances, and other things —

Verse 57 (shiva.uma.51.57)

āndolayettato devīṁ mahāmāyāṁ maheśvarīm śrīgaurīṁ śivasaṁyuktāṁ sarvakalyāṇakāriṇīm

one should then swing the Goddess, Mahamaya, the great Sovereign, Shri Gauri joined with Shiva, the bringer of all auspiciousness.

Verse 58 (shiva.uma.51.58)

pratyabdaṁ kurute yo'syāṁ vratamāndolanaṁ tathā niyamena śivā tasmai sarvamiṣṭaṁ prayacchati

To whoever performs this vow and the swinging rite on this day every year, with regularity, the Goddess grants everything desired.

Verse 59 (shiva.uma.51.59)
