Uma Samhita · Chapter 7
The Path to the Hell Realms and the Form of Yama's Messengers
Verse 1 (shiva.uma.7.1)
sanatkumāra uvāca atha pāpairnarā yānti yamalokaṁ caturvidhaiḥ santrāsajananaṁ ghoraṁ vivaśāḥ sarvadehinaḥ
Sanatkumara said: Thus, by the four kinds of sin, men go to the world of Yama — that terrifying, dreadful place where all embodied beings are helpless.
Verse 2 (shiva.uma.7.2)
garbhasthairjāyamānaiśca bālaistaruṇamadhyamaiḥ strīpunnapuṁsakairjīvairjñātavyaṁ sarvajantuṣu
This should be understood as applying to all beings — whether still in the womb, being born, children, youths, or of middle age; whether female, male, or neuter.
Verse 3 (shiva.uma.7.3)
śubhāśubhaphalaṁ cātra dehināṁ saṁvicāryate citraguptādibhiḥ sarvaiḥ vasiṣṭhapramukhaistathā
Here the good and bad fruits of the deeds of embodied beings are carefully examined by Chitragupta and others, and likewise by sages headed by Vasishtha.
Verse 4 (shiva.uma.7.4)
na kecitprāṇinaḥ santi ye na yānti yamakṣayam avaśyaṁ hi kṛtaṁ karma bhoktavyaṁ tadvicāryatām
There are no living beings at all who do not go to the abode of Yama; for deeds once done must inevitably be experienced — consider this well.
Verse 5 (shiva.uma.7.5)
tatra ye śubhakarmāṇaḥ saumyacittā dayānvitāḥ te narā yānti saumyena pūrvaṁ yamaniketanam
Among these, those men of virtuous deeds, gentle mind, and endowed with compassion, go by a pleasant road to the abode of Yama.
Verse 6 (shiva.uma.7.6)
ye punaḥ pāpakarmāṇaḥ pāpā dānavivarjitāḥ te ghoreṇa pathā yānti dakṣiṇena yamālayam
But those who are sinful in their deeds, wicked, and devoid of charity go by the terrible southern road to the abode of Yama.
Verse 7 (shiva.uma.7.7)
ṣaḍaśītisahasrāṇi yojanānāmatītya tat vaivasvatapuraṁ jñeyaṁ nānārūpamavasthitam
That city of Vaivasvata is to be known as situated eighty-six thousand yojanas away, existing in manifold forms.
Verse 8 (shiva.uma.7.8)
samīpasthamivābhāti narāṇāṁ puṇyakarmaṇām pāpināmatidūrasthaṁ yathā raudreṇa gacchatām
It appears as though nearby to men of meritorious deeds, but exceedingly far off for sinners who travel by the terrible path.
Verse 9 (shiva.uma.7.9)

taṭaprāyātiviṣamaiḥ parvatairvṛkṣasaṅkulaiḥ prataptāṅgārayuktena yānti mārgeṇa duḥkhitāḥ
— they travel, in suffering, by a road with steep, treacherous mountain slopes crowded with trees, and covered with blazing embers —
Verse 12 (shiva.uma.7.12)
kvacidviṣamagartaiśca kvacilloṣṭhaiḥ suduṣkaraiḥ sutaptabālukābhiśca tathā tīkṣṇaiśca śaṅkubhiḥ
— in places with treacherous pits, in places with hard jagged clods, and by ground of burning-hot sand and sharp stakes —
Verse 13 (shiva.uma.7.13)
anekaśākhāvitatairvyāptaṁ vaṁśavanaiḥ kvacit kaṣṭena tamasā mārgeṇānālambena kutracit
— in places covered with bamboo thickets spread with many branches; in places by a road of painful darkness, with nothing to hold onto —
Verse 14 (shiva.uma.7.14)
ayaḥ śṛṅgāṭakaistīkṣṇaiḥ kvaciddāvāgninā punaḥ kvacittaptaśilābhiśca kvacidvyāptaṁ himena ca
— by sharp iron caltrops; and again in places by forest fire; in places by scorching-hot rocks, and in places covered with ice —
Verse 15 (shiva.uma.7.15)
kvacidvālukayā vyāptamākaṇṭhāntaḥ praveśayā kvacidduṣṭāmbunā vyāptaṁ kvacicca kariṣāgninā
— in places covered with sand that engulfs one up to the neck; in places covered with foul water, and in places with the fire of dung-fuel —
Verse 16 (shiva.uma.7.16)

— with terrible flies, in places with serpents laden with venom, and with herds of rutting elephants, maddened with strength and destructive —
Verse 18 (shiva.uma.7.18)
panthānamullikhadbhiśca sūkaraistīkṣṇadaṁṣṭribhiḥ tīkṣṇaśṛṅgaiśca mahiṣaiḥ sarvabhūtaiśca śvāpadaiḥ
— with sharp-tusked boars tearing up the path, with sharp-horned buffaloes, and with every kind of predatory beast —
Verse 19 (shiva.uma.7.19)
ḍākinībhiśca raudrābhirvikarālaiśca rākṣasaiḥ vyādhibhiśca mahāghoraiḥ pīḍyamānā vrajanti hi
— tormented by terrible Dakinis, by hideous Rakshasas, and by most dreadful diseases, they proceed on their way —

mahādhūlivimiśreṇa mahācaṇḍena vāyunā mahāpāṣāṇavarṣeṇa hanyamānā nirāśrayāḥ
— struck, without shelter, by a great, fierce wind mixed with thick dust, and by a great downpour of stones —
Verse 21 (shiva.uma.7.21)
kvacidvidyutprapātena dahyamānā vrajanti ca mahatā bāṇavarṣeṇa vidhyamānāśca sarvataḥ
— in places burned by falling lightning, they proceed on, pierced everywhere by a great rain of arrows —
Verse 22 (shiva.uma.7.22)
patadbhirvajrapātaiśca ulkāpātaiśca dāruṇaiḥ pradīptāṅgāravarṣeṇa dahyamānāśca santi hi
— struck by falling thunderbolts and terrible falling meteors, they are indeed burned by a rain of blazing embers —
Verse 23 (shiva.uma.7.23)

— pierced everywhere by a rain of sharp weapons, and drenched by streams of caustic, saline water, they proceed on —
Verse 25 (shiva.uma.7.25)
mahīśītena marutā rūkṣeṇa paruṣeṇa ca samantād bādhyamānāśca śuṣyante saṅkucanti ca
— tormented on every side by a bitterly cold, harsh, and rough wind, they wither and shrivel up.
Verse 26 (shiva.uma.7.26)
itthaṁ mārgeṇa raudreṇa pātheyarahitena ca nirālambena durgeṇa nirjalena samantataḥ
By such a terrible path, devoid of provisions for the journey, without any support, difficult to traverse, and utterly waterless —
Verse 27 (shiva.uma.7.27)
viṣameṇaiva mahatā nirjanāpāśrayeṇa ca tamorūpeṇa kaṣṭena sarvaduṣṭāśrayeṇa ca
— truly treacherous and vast, offering no shelter in its desolation, of the very form of darkness, full of hardship, and the refuge of every evil thing —
Verse 28 (shiva.uma.7.28)
nīyante dehinaḥ sarve ye mūḍhāḥ pāpakarmiṇaḥ yamadūtairmahāghoraistadājñākāribhirbalāt
— by this path, all embodied beings who are foolish and sinful in their deeds are forcibly led by the most terrible messengers of Yama, who carry out his commands.
Verse 29 (shiva.uma.7.29)
ekākinaḥ parādhīnā mitrabandhuvivarjitāḥ śocantaḥ svāni karmāṇi rudantaśca muhurmuhuḥ
Alone, utterly dependent, deprived of friends and kinsfolk, grieving over their own deeds, and weeping again and again —
Verse 30 (shiva.uma.7.30)
pretā bhūtvā vivastrāśca śuṣkakaṇṭhauṣṭhatālukāḥ asaumyā bhayabhītāśca dahyamānāḥ kṣudhānvitāḥ
— having become disembodied spirits, naked, their throats, lips, and palates parched dry, unlovely, terrified, burning, and afflicted with hunger —
Verse 31 (shiva.uma.7.31)
baddhāḥ śṛṅkhalayā keciduttā napādakā narāḥ kṛṣyante kṛṣyamāṇāśca yamadūtairbalotkaṭaiḥ
Some men, bound with chains, thrown down, unable to walk on their own, are dragged and dragged again by the exceedingly powerful messengers of Yama.
Verse 32 (shiva.uma.7.32)
urasādhomukhāścānye ghṛṣyamāṇāḥ suduḥkhitāḥ keśapāśanibandhena saṅkṛṣyante ca rajjunā
Others, face down upon their chests, being scraped along in great suffering, are dragged along, bound by a rope tied to their hair.
Verse 33 (shiva.uma.7.33)
lalāṭe cāṅkuśenānye bhinnā duṣyanti dehinaḥ uttānāḥ kaṇṭakapathā kvacidaṅgāravartmanā
Others, pierced on the forehead by a hook, suffer greatly; some, lying on their backs, are dragged along a path of thorns, or in places a path of burning coals.
Verse 34 (shiva.uma.7.34)
paścād bāhunibaddhāśca jaṭhareṇa prapīḍitāḥ pūritāḥ śṛṅkhalābhiśca hastayośca sukīlitāḥ
— with their arms bound behind them, their bellies afflicted, wound about with chains, and their hands firmly pinned —
Verse 35 (shiva.uma.7.35)
grīvāpāśena kṛṣyante prayāntyanye suduḥkhitāḥ jihvāṅkuśapraveśena rajjvākṛṣyanta eva te
— they are dragged by a noose about the neck; others go along in great suffering, dragged by a rope attached through a hook thrust into the tongue.
Verse 36 (shiva.uma.7.36)
nāsābhedena rajjvā ca tvākṛṣyante tathāpare bhinnāḥ kapolayo rajjvā kṛṣyante'nye tathauṣṭhayoḥ
Others still are dragged by a rope through a pierced nose and skin; others, pierced through the cheeks, are dragged by a rope, and likewise through the lips.
Verse 37 (shiva.uma.7.37)
chinnāgrapādahastāśca chinnakarṇoṣṭhanāsikāḥ sañchinnaśiśnavṛṣaṇāḥ chinnabhinnāṅgasandhayaḥ
— with the tips of their feet and hands cut off, their ears, lips, and nose cut off, their genitals severed, their limbs and joints cut and torn asunder —
Verse 38 (shiva.uma.7.38)
ābhidyamānāḥ kuntaiśca bhidyamānāśca sāyakaiḥ itaścetaśca dhāvantaḥ krandamānā nirāśrayāḥ
— pierced through by lances, pierced by arrows, they run this way and that, wailing, without any refuge —
Verse 39 (shiva.uma.7.39)
mudgarairlohadaṇḍaiśca hanyamānā muhurmuhuḥ kaṇṭakairvividhairghorairjvalanārkasamaprabhaiḥ
— struck again and again with maces and iron rods, with various terrible thorns, blazing bright as the sun —
Verse 40 (shiva.uma.7.40)
bhindipālairvibhidyante sravataḥ pūyaśoṇitam śakṛtā kṛmidigdhāśca nīyante vivaśā narāḥ
— pierced through with javelins, oozing pus and blood, smeared with excrement and worms, these helpless men are led along.
Verse 41 (shiva.uma.7.41)
yācamānāśca salilamannaṁ vāpi bubhukṣitāḥ chāyāṁ prārthayamānāśca śītārtāścānalaṁ punaḥ
— begging for water, or, famished, for food; praying for shade, and again, tormented by cold, praying for fire —
Verse 42 (shiva.uma.7.42)
dānahīnāḥ prayāntyevaṁ prārthayantaḥ sukhaṁ narāḥ gṛhītadānapātheyāḥ sukhaṁ yānti yamālayam
— thus men devoid of charity go on, praying in vain for comfort; but those who have taken up charity as provision for the journey go happily to the abode of Yama.
Verse 43 (shiva.uma.7.43)
evaṁ nyāyena kaṣṭena prāptāḥ pretapuraṁ yadā prajñāpitāstato dūtairniveśyante yamāgrataḥ
When, in this manner, by such rightful hardship, they have reached the city of the dead, they are then announced by the messengers and brought before Yama.
Verse 44 (shiva.uma.7.44)
tatra ye śubhakarmāṇastāṁstu sammānayedyamaḥ svāgatāsanadānena pādyārghyeṇa priyeṇa ca
There, Yama honors those of virtuous deeds, giving them welcome, a seat, water for the feet, a respectful offering, and kindly words —
Verse 45 (shiva.uma.7.45)
dhanyā yūyaṁ mahātmāno nigamoditakāriṇaḥ yaiśca divyasukhārthāya bhavadbhiḥ sukṛtaṁ kṛtam
'Blessed are you, great souls, who acted according to what is enjoined in the scriptures — by whom, for the sake of divine happiness, meritorious deeds have been performed.'
Verse 46 (shiva.uma.7.46)
divyaṁ vimānamāruhya divyastrībhogabhūṣitam svargaṁ gacchadhvamamalaṁ sarvakāmasamanvitam
'Mounting a divine chariot, adorned with the enjoyment of celestial women, go to heaven, that stainless realm, endowed with the fulfillment of every desire.'
Verse 47 (shiva.uma.7.47)
tatra bhuktvā mahābhogānante puṇyasya saṅkṣayāt yatkiñcidalpamaśubhaṁ punastadiha bhokṣyatha
'Having enjoyed great pleasures there, at the end, when your merit is exhausted, whatever small residue of ill remains, that you shall again experience here.'
Verse 48 (shiva.uma.7.48)
dharmātmāno narā ye ca mitrabhūtā ivātmanaḥ saumyaṁ mukhaṁ prapaśyanti dharmarājanameva ca
Those righteous-souled men, who are like friends to their own selves, behold the gentle face of the King of Dharma himself.
Verse 49 (shiva.uma.7.49)
ye punaḥ krūrakarmāṇaste paśyanti bhayānakam daṁṣṭrākarālavadanaṁ bhṛkuṭīkuṭilekṣaṇam
But those of cruel deeds behold him as terrifying — his face hideous with fangs, his gaze crooked with a furrowed brow —
Verse 50 (shiva.uma.7.50)
ūrdhvakeśaṁ mahāśmaśrumūrdhvaprasphuritādharam aṣṭādaśabhujaṁ kruddhaṁ nīlāñjanacayopamam
— his hair standing on end, with a great beard, his lower lip quivering upward, with eighteen arms, wrathful, resembling a mass of dark collyrium —
Verse 51 (shiva.uma.7.51)
sarvāyudhoddhṛtakaraṁ sarvadaṇḍena tarjayan mahāmahiṣamārūḍhaṁ dīptāgnisamalocanam
— his hands raised, bearing every weapon, threatening with every kind of rod, mounted upon his great buffalo, his eyes like blazing fire —
Verse 52 (shiva.uma.7.52)
raktamālyāmbaradharaṁ mahāmerumivocchritam pralayāmbudanirghoṣaṁ pibanniva mahodadhim
— wearing red garlands and garments, towering like Mount Meru, roaring like the clouds of universal dissolution, as if drinking up the great ocean —
Verse 53 (shiva.uma.7.53)
grasantamiva śailendramudgirantamivānalam mṛtyuścaiva samīpasthaḥ kālānalasamaprabhaḥ
— as if swallowing the very lord of mountains, as if belching forth fire; and Death himself stands close by, blazing like the fire of cosmic dissolution —
Verse 54 (shiva.uma.7.54)
kālaścāñjanasaṅkāśaḥ kṛtāntaśca bhayānakaḥ mārī cogramahāmārī kālarātriśca dāruṇā
— and Kala, dark as collyrium, and the terrifying Kritanta; and Mari, the fierce great pestilence, and dreadful Kalaratri —
Verse 55 (shiva.uma.7.55)
vividhā vyādhayaḥ kuṣṭhā nānārūpā bhayāvahāḥ śaktiśūlāṅkuśadharāḥ pāśacakrāsipāṇayaḥ
— various diseases and forms of leprosy, of manifold and terrifying forms, bearing spears, tridents, and goads, with nooses, discuses, and swords in hand —
Verse 56 (shiva.uma.7.56)
vajratuṇḍadharā raudrāḥ kṣuratūṇadhanurddharāḥ nānāyudhadharāḥ sarve mahāvīrā bhayaṅkarāḥ
— terrible ones with thunderbolt-tipped mouths, bearing razor-quivers and bows, all bearing various weapons, mighty and fearsome —
Verse 57 (shiva.uma.7.57)
asaṅkhyātā mahāvīrāḥ kālāñjanasamaprabhāḥ sarvāyudhodyatakarā yamadūtā bhayānakāḥ
— countless mighty ones, dark as collyrium, their hands raised with every weapon — these are the terrible messengers of Yama.
Verse 58 (shiva.uma.7.58)
anena paricāreṇa vṛtaṁ taṁ ghoradarśanam yamaṁ paśyanti pāpiṣṭhāścitraguptaṁ ca bhīṣaṇam
Surrounded by this retinue, the sinners behold that dreadful-looking Yama, and the fearsome Chitragupta.
Verse 59 (shiva.uma.7.59)
nirbhartsayati cātyantaṁ yamastānpāpakarmaṇaḥ citraguptaśca bhagavān dharmavākyaiḥ prabodhayet
And Yama rebukes those sinners exceedingly harshly for their deeds; and the blessed Chitragupta admonishes them with words of righteousness.
