Verse 1 (shiva.kailasa.20.1)

सुब्रह्मण्य उवाच । क्षौरस्नानविधिं वक्ष्ये वामदेव महामुने । यस्य सद्यो विधानेन शुद्धिः स्याद्यतिनः परा

subrahmaṇya uvāca | kṣaurasnānavidhiṁ vakṣye vāmadeva mahāmune | yasya sadyo vidhānena śuddhiḥ syādyatinaḥ parā

Subrahmanya said: "I shall now describe the rite of tonsure and bathing, O Vamadeva, great sage, by whose immediate performance the renunciant's supreme purity is attained."

Verse 2 (shiva.kailasa.20.2)

योगपट्टप्रकारस्य विधिं प्राप्य मुनीश्वर । स शिष्यः स्याद् व्रती पूर्णः क्षौरकर्मोद्यतो भवेत्

yogapaṭṭaprakārasya vidhiṁ prāpya munīśvara | sa śiṣyaḥ syād vratī pūrṇaḥ kṣaurakarmodyato bhavet

"O lord of sages, having received the rite of the yoga-patta, that disciple becomes a full votary, and should then undertake the act of tonsure."

Verse 3 (shiva.kailasa.20.3)

गुरुं नत्वा विशेषेण लब्धानुज्ञस्ततो गुरोः । शिरः सङ्क्षाल्य चाचम्य सवासाः क्षौरमाचरेत्

guruṁ natvā viśeṣeṇa labdhānujñastato guroḥ | śiraḥ saṅkṣālya cācamya savāsāḥ kṣauramācaret

"Having bowed especially to the guru and received his permission, he should wash his head, sip water, and, clothed, perform the tonsure."

Verse 4 (shiva.kailasa.20.4)

क्षालयेद्वसनं पश्चान्मृदम्भोभिः क्षुरादिकम् । तद्धस्तौ च मृदालिप्य क्षालयेति मृदं ददेत्

kṣālayedvasanaṁ paścānmṛdambhobhiḥ kṣurādikam | taddhastau ca mṛdālipya kṣālayeti mṛdaṁ dadet

"He should wash the razor and other implements with clay and water; and, his hands smeared with clay, one should hand him clay saying 'wash.'"

Verse 5 (shiva.kailasa.20.5)

स्थापितं प्रोक्षितं तोयैः शिवं शिवमितीरयन् । स्वनेत्रे पिहिते चैवानामाङ्गुष्ठाभिमन्त्रिते

sthāpitaṁ prokṣitaṁ toyaiḥ śivaṁ śivamitīrayan | svanetre pihite caivānāmāṅguṣṭhābhimantrite

"The razor, set in place and sprinkled with water, saying 'Shiva, Shiva,' his own eyes closed and his thumb consecrated with mantra —"

Verse 6 (shiva.kailasa.20.6)

अस्त्रेणोन्मील्य सन्दृश्य क्षुरादिक्षौरसाधनम् । अभिमन्त्र्य द्वादशाथ प्रोक्षयेदस्त्रमन्त्रतः

astreṇonmīlya sandṛśya kṣurādikṣaurasādhanam | abhimantrya dvādaśātha prokṣayedastramantrataḥ

"— having opened his eyes with the astra-mantra and looked upon the razor and the other implements, he should consecrate them twelve times and sprinkle them with the astra-mantra."

Verse 7 (shiva.kailasa.20.7)

क्षुरं गृहीत्वा तारेण दक्षभागे निकृन्तयेत् । केशांश्च कांश्चिदग्रेषु वप्त्वा सर्वं च वापयेत्

kṣuraṁ gṛhītvā tāreṇa dakṣabhāge nikṛntayet | keśāṁśca kāṁścidagreṣu vaptvā sarvaṁ ca vāpayet

"Taking up the razor with the syllable Om, he should begin cutting on the right side; having shaved some hair at the front, he should have the whole head shaved."

Verse 8 (shiva.kailasa.20.8)

पृथिव्यां पर्णमादाय विक्षिपेन्न भुवः स्थले । श्मश्रूणि हस्तपादस्थनखानि च निकृन्तयेत्

pṛthivyāṁ parṇamādāya vikṣipenna bhuvaḥ sthale | śmaśrūṇi hastapādasthanakhāni ca nikṛntayet

"He should let the hair fall onto a leaf placed on the ground, not onto the bare earth; he should also cut the beard and the nails of the hands and feet."

Verse 9 (shiva.kailasa.20.9)

बिल्वाश्वत्थतुलस्यादिस्थाने सङ्गृह्य मृत्तिकाम् । द्विषड्वारं निमज्याप्सु तीरं गत्वोपविश्य च

bilvāśvatthatulasyādisthāne saṅgṛhya mṛttikām | dviṣaḍvāraṁ nimajyāpsu tīraṁ gatvopaviśya ca

"Having gathered clay from beneath a bilva, ashvattha, tulasi or the like, he should dip in water twelve times, then go to the bank and sit down."

Verse 10 (shiva.kailasa.20.10)

शुद्धे देशे तु संस्थाप्य मृदं त्रेधा विभज्य च । एवं पुनस्त्रिधा कृत्वा प्रोक्ष्यास्त्रेणाभिमन्त्रयेत्

śuddhe deśe tu saṁsthāpya mṛdaṁ tredhā vibhajya ca | evaṁ punastridhā kṛtvā prokṣyāstreṇābhimantrayet

"Having placed the clay in a pure spot and divided it into three parts, then further divided threefold again, he should sprinkle and consecrate it with the astra-mantra."

Verse 11 (shiva.kailasa.20.11)

तत्रैकां मृदमादाय दापयित्वान्यपाणिना । करौ द्वादशधालिप्य प्रत्येकं केन क्षालयेत्

tatraikāṁ mṛdamādāya dāpayitvānyapāṇinā | karau dvādaśadhālipya pratyekaṁ kena kṣālayet

"Taking one portion of clay there, and having it given by another's hand, he should smear his hands twelve times, washing each time with water."

Verse 12 (shiva.kailasa.20.12)

पुनरेकां पादयोश्च मुखे चान्यां करे क्रमात् । संलिप्याक्षाल्य चाम्भोभिः पुनश्च जलमाविशेत्

punarekāṁ pādayośca mukhe cānyāṁ kare kramāt | saṁlipyākṣālya cāmbhobhiḥ punaśca jalamāviśet

"Then, applying one portion to the feet and another in turn to the mouth and hand, having smeared and washed with water, he should enter the water again."

Verse 13 (shiva.kailasa.20.13)

अन्यां मृदं भागयित्वा शिरसि द्वादश क्रमात् । आलिप्य मृदमास्यान्तं निमज्य च पुनः पुनः

anyāṁ mṛdaṁ bhāgayitvā śirasi dvādaśa kramāt | ālipya mṛdamāsyāntaṁ nimajya ca punaḥ punaḥ

"Having divided another portion of clay, he should apply it to the head twelve times in sequence, smearing it up to the mouth, and dip again and again."

Verse 14 (shiva.kailasa.20.14)

तीरं गत्वा तु गण्डूषान् षोडशाचमनं द्विधा । प्राणानायम्य च पुनः प्रणवं द्व्यष्टसङ्ख्यया

tīraṁ gatvā tu gaṇḍūṣān ṣoḍaśācamanaṁ dvidhā | prāṇānāyamya ca punaḥ praṇavaṁ dvyaṣṭasaṅkhyayā

"Going to the bank, he should rinse his mouth sixteen times and sip water twice; and, controlling the breath, recite the Pranava sixteen times."

Verse 15 (shiva.kailasa.20.15)

मृदमन्यां पुनस्त्रेधा विभज्य च तदेकया । कटिशौचं पादशौचं विधायाचम्य च द्विधा

mṛdamanyāṁ punastredhā vibhajya ca tadekayā | kaṭiśaucaṁ pādaśaucaṁ vidhāyācamya ca dvidhā

"Having divided another portion of clay into three, with one part he should purify his waist and feet, and sip water twice."

Verse 16 (shiva.kailasa.20.16)

प्रणवेनाथ षोडश प्राणानायम्य वाग्यतः । पुनरन्यां स्वोरुदेशे त्रिधा विन्यस्य चोमिति

praṇavenātha ṣoḍaśa prāṇānāyamya vāgyataḥ | punaranyāṁ svorudeśe tridhā vinyasya comiti

"Then, controlling the breath sixteen times with the Pranava, remaining silent, he should apply another portion of clay to his thighs threefold, uttering Om."

Verse 17 (shiva.kailasa.20.17)

प्रोक्ष्याभिमन्त्रयेत्सप्त स्वपाण्योस्तलमेकधा । त्रिधालिप्याथ सम्पश्येत्सूर्यमूर्तिं च पावनीम्

prokṣyābhimantrayetsapta svapāṇyostalamekadhā | tridhālipyātha sampaśyetsūryamūrtiṁ ca pāvanīm

"Having sprinkled and consecrated it seven times, applying it once to his palms and smearing it threefold, he should then behold the purifying form of the sun."

Verse 18 (shiva.kailasa.20.18)

स्वकक्षयोः समालिप्य व्यत्यस्ताभ्यामथान्यया । पाणिभ्यां च मृदा शिष्यः सुमतिर्दृढमानसः

svakakṣayoḥ samālipya vyatyastābhyāmathānyayā | pāṇibhyāṁ ca mṛdā śiṣyaḥ sumatirdṛḍhamānasaḥ

"Having smeared his own armpits with crossed hands, and then taking another portion of clay in both hands, the wise, firm-minded disciple —"

Verse 19 (shiva.kailasa.20.19)

गृहीत्वान्यां मृदं शुद्धां तथासौ गुरुभक्तिमान् । शिर आरभ्य पादान्तं विलिप्यादित्यदृष्टया

gṛhītvānyāṁ mṛdaṁ śuddhāṁ tathāsau gurubhaktimān | śira ārabhya pādāntaṁ vilipyādityadṛṣṭayā

"— taking yet another portion of pure clay, he, devoted to his guru, should smear it from head to foot, in view of the sun."

Verse 20 (shiva.kailasa.20.20)

समुत्थाय ततोऽसौ वै दण्डमादाय भूतले । स्वगुरुं मन्त्रदं भक्त्या संस्मरेज्ज्ञाननिष्ठया

samutthāya tato'sau vai daṇḍamādāya bhūtale | svaguruṁ mantradaṁ bhaktyā saṁsmarejjñānaniṣṭhayā

"Then, rising and taking up his staff upon the ground, he should devotedly and with grounding in knowledge call to mind his own guru who gave him the mantra."

Verse 21 (shiva.kailasa.20.21)

ततः साम्बं महेशानं शङ्करं चन्द्रशेखरम् । संस्मरेद्भक्तितः शिष्य सर्वैश्वर्यपतिं शिवम्

tataḥ sāmbaṁ maheśānaṁ śaṅkaraṁ candraśekharam | saṁsmaredbhaktitaḥ śiṣya sarvaiśvaryapatiṁ śivam

"Then the disciple should devotedly call to mind Mahesha together with Amba, Shankara, the moon-crested Shiva, lord of all sovereignty."

Verse 22 (shiva.kailasa.20.22)

त्रिवारं प्रणमेत्प्रीत्या साष्टाङ्गं च गुरुं शिवम् । पञ्चाङ्गेनैकवारं च समुत्थाय च वन्दयेत्

trivāraṁ praṇametprītyā sāṣṭāṅgaṁ ca guruṁ śivam | pañcāṅgenaikavāraṁ ca samutthāya ca vandayet

"He should lovingly bow three times, prostrating with eight limbs, to the guru as Shiva, and, rising, salute once more with five limbs touching the ground."

Verse 23 (shiva.kailasa.20.23)

तीर्थं प्रविश्य तन्मध्ये निमज्योन्मज्य तां मृदम् । स्कन्धे संस्थाप्य पूर्वोक्तप्रकारेण विलेपयेत्

tīrthaṁ praviśya tanmadhye nimajyonmajya tāṁ mṛdam | skandhe saṁsthāpya pūrvoktaprakāreṇa vilepayet

"Entering the sacred bathing-place, diving in its midst and rising again, he should place that clay upon his shoulder and smear it as already described."

Verse 24 (shiva.kailasa.20.24)

तत्रावशिष्टं सङ्गृह्य जलमध्ये प्रविश्य च । विलोड्य सम्यक् तां तत्र सर्वाङ्गेषु विलिप्य च

tatrāvaśiṣṭaṁ saṅgṛhya jalamadhye praviśya ca | viloḍya samyak tāṁ tatra sarvāṅgeṣu vilipya ca

"Having gathered what remains, and entering into the midst of the water, he should stir it well and smear it over all his limbs."

Verse 25 (shiva.kailasa.20.25)

त्रिवारमोमिति प्रोच्य शिवपादाम्बुजं स्मरन् । संसाराम्बुधिसन्तारं सदा यद्विधितो हि सः

trivāramomiti procya śivapādāmbujaṁ smaran | saṁsārāmbudhisantāraṁ sadā yadvidhito hi saḥ

"Uttering Om three times and calling to mind the lotus feet of Shiva — for it is by that very rite that one always crosses the ocean of samsara —"

Verse 26 (shiva.kailasa.20.26)

अभिषिच्योमिति जलं विरजाभस्मलोलितम् । अङ्गोपमार्ज्जनं कृत्वा सुस्नायाद्भस्मना ततः

abhiṣicyomiti jalaṁ virajābhasmalolitam | aṅgopamārjjanaṁ kṛtvā susnāyādbhasmanā tataḥ

"— having bathed, uttering Om, with water mingled with the pure ash, and having wiped his limbs, he should then properly bathe with ash."

Verse 27 (shiva.kailasa.20.27)

त्रिपुण्ड्रं च विधायाथ यथोक्तविधिना शुभम् । यथोक्ताङ्गेषु सर्वेषु सावधानतया मुने

tripuṇḍraṁ ca vidhāyātha yathoktavidhinā śubham | yathoktāṅgeṣu sarveṣu sāvadhānatayā mune

"O sage, he should then, with careful attention, apply the auspicious tripundra according to rule, upon all the limbs already specified."

Verse 28 (shiva.kailasa.20.28)

ततः शुद्धमना भूत्वा कुर्यान्मध्यदिनक्रियाः । महेश्वरं नमस्कृत्य गुरूंस्तीर्थादिकानि च

tataḥ śuddhamanā bhūtvā kuryānmadhyadinakriyāḥ | maheśvaraṁ namaskṛtya gurūṁstīrthādikāni ca

"Then, becoming pure in mind, he should perform the midday rites, having bowed to Maheshvara, to the gurus, and to the sacred waters and the rest."

Verse 29 (shiva.kailasa.20.29)

सम्पूजयेन्महेशानं भक्त्या परमया मुने । साम्बिकं ज्ञानदातारं पातारं त्रिभवस्य वै

sampūjayenmaheśānaṁ bhaktyā paramayā mune | sāmbikaṁ jñānadātāraṁ pātāraṁ tribhavasya vai

"O sage, he should worship Maheshana with supreme devotion — the Lord together with Amba, the giver of knowledge, the protector of the three states of existence."

Verse 30 (shiva.kailasa.20.30)

ततोऽसौ दृढचेतस्को यतिः स्ववृषसंस्थितः । भिक्षार्थं प्रव्रजेच्छुद्धो विप्रवर्गेषु साधुषु

tato'sau dṛḍhacetasko yatiḥ svavṛṣasaṁsthitaḥ | bhikṣārthaṁ pravrajecchuddho vipravargeṣu sādhuṣu

"Then that renunciant, firm of mind, established in his own conduct, purified, should go forth for alms among the virtuous groups of brahmins."

Verse 31 (shiva.kailasa.20.31)

ततस्तत्र च शुद्धात्मा पञ्चधा परिकल्पितम् । भैक्ष्यं यथोचितं कुर्याद् दूषितान्नं विवर्जयेत्

tatastatra ca śuddhātmā pañcadhā parikalpitam | bhaikṣyaṁ yathocitaṁ kuryād dūṣitānnaṁ vivarjayet

"There, of pure self, he should properly take alms apportioned in five ways, as is fitting, avoiding tainted food."

Verse 32 (shiva.kailasa.20.32)

शौचं स्नानं तथा भिक्षां नित्यमेकान्तसेवनम् । भिक्षौश्चत्वारि कर्माणि पञ्चमं नैव विद्यते

śaucaṁ snānaṁ tathā bhikṣāṁ nityamekāntasevanam | bhikṣauścatvāri karmāṇi pañcamaṁ naiva vidyate

"Purification, bathing, begging, and constant dwelling in solitude — these are the four duties of the mendicant; a fifth does not exist."

Verse 33 (shiva.kailasa.20.33)

अलाबुं वेणुपात्रं च दारवं मृण्मयं तथा । भिक्षोश्चत्वारि पात्राणि पञ्चमं नैव विद्यते

alābuṁ veṇupātraṁ ca dāravaṁ mṛṇmayaṁ tathā | bhikṣoścatvāri pātrāṇi pañcamaṁ naiva vidyate

"A gourd, a bamboo vessel, a wooden one, and an earthen one — these are the four bowls of the mendicant; a fifth does not exist."

Verse 34 (shiva.kailasa.20.34)

ताम्बूलं तैजसं पात्रं रेतस्सेकं सिताम्बरम् । दिवास्वापो हिनक्तान्नं यतीनां षड्विवर्जिताः

tāmbūlaṁ taijasaṁ pātraṁ retassekaṁ sitāmbaram | divāsvāpo hinaktānnaṁ yatīnāṁ ṣaḍvivarjitāḥ

"Betel, a metal vessel, the emission of seed, white garments, sleeping in the daytime, and eating at night — these six are forbidden to renunciants."

Verse 35 (shiva.kailasa.20.35)

साक्षरा विपरीताश्च राक्षसास्त इति स्मृताः । तस्माद्वै विपरीतं च कर्म नैवाचरेद् यतिः

sākṣarā viparītāśca rākṣasāsta iti smṛtāḥ | tasmādvai viparītaṁ ca karma naivācared yatiḥ

"Those who, though learned, act contrary to this are remembered as demons; therefore the renunciant should never practice contrary conduct."

Verse 36 (shiva.kailasa.20.36)

यतिः प्रयत्नतः कुर्यात्क्षौरस्नानं च शुद्धये । संस्मरन्मनसा शुद्धं परं ब्रह्म सदाशिवम्

yatiḥ prayatnataḥ kuryātkṣaurasnānaṁ ca śuddhaye | saṁsmaranmanasā śuddhaṁ paraṁ brahma sadāśivam

"The renunciant should carefully perform the tonsure and bath for the sake of purity, calling to mind in his pure mind the supreme Brahman, Sadashiva."

Verse 37 (shiva.kailasa.20.37)

इत्यैव मुनिशार्दूल तव स्नेहान्मयाखिलः । क्षौरस्नानविधिः प्रोक्तः किम्भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि

ityaiva muniśārdūla tava snehānmayākhilaḥ | kṣaurasnānavidhiḥ proktaḥ kimbhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi

"Thus, O tiger among sages, out of affection for you, I have declared to you the entire rite of tonsure and bathing — what more do you wish to hear?"
