subrahmaṇya uvāca | idameva mune guhyaṁ bhṛgave śivayogine | uktaṁ bhagavatā sākṣātsarvajñena pinākinā

Subrahmanya said: "O sage, this very secret was spoken directly by the all-knowing Lord who bears the Pinaka bow, to Bhrigu the Shiva-yogin."

vakṣye tadadya te brahmanna deyaṁ yasya kasyacit | deyaṁ śiṣyāya śāntāya śivabhaktiyutāya vai

"I shall now tell it to you, O brahmin; it is not to be given to just anyone — it is to be given only to a disciple who is peaceful and devoted to Shiva."

Verse 8 (shiva.kailasa.21.8)

samādhistho yatiḥ kaścicchivabhāvena dehamuk | asti cetsa mahādhīraḥ paripūrṇaḥ śivo bhavet

"If there is a renunciant who, established in samadhi, leaves the body in the state of Shiva-consciousness, that greatly steadfast one becomes perfectly full, Shiva himself."

Verse 9 (shiva.kailasa.21.9)

adhairyacitto yaḥ kaścitsamādhiṁ na ca vindati | tadupāyaṁ pravakṣyāmi sāvadhānatayā śṛṇu

Verse 10 (shiva.kailasa.21.10)

"Having heard from the guru's own mouth the full understanding of the meaning of the three words, born of the statements of Vedanta and the Agamas, he should practice yoga, beginning with yama and the rest."

tatkurvansa yatiḥ samyak śivadhyānaparo bhavet | niyamena mune nityaṁ praṇavāsaktamānasaḥ

"Doing this, that renunciant becomes truly devoted to meditation on Shiva, O sage, ever disciplined, his mind fixed upon the Pranava."

Verse 12 (shiva.kailasa.21.12)

dehadaurbalyavaśato yadyadhairyadharo yatiḥ | akāmaśca śivaṁ smṛtvā sa jīrṇāṁ svāṁ tanuṁ tyajet

Verse 15 (shiva.kailasa.21.15)

uttarāyaṇarūpā ca pañcānugrahatatparā | dhūmrā tamasvinī rātriḥ kṛṣṇapakṣābhimāninī

Verse 17 (shiva.kailasa.21.17)

"Beholding the one who has thus arrived, the God of gods, Sadashiva — if he is truly dispassionate — having taught him the essential meaning of the great mantra —"

Verse 22 (shiva.kailasa.21.22)

svasāmyaṁ ca vapurdatte gāṇapatyebhiṣicya ca | anugṛhṇāti sarveśaḥ śaṅkaraḥ sarvanāyakaḥ

Verse 23 (shiva.kailasa.21.23)

nipātya śaktiṁ tīvratarāṁ prakṛtyā hyatidurgamām | kāntāraṁ dagdhukāmāṁ tāṁ pralayānalasuprabhām

"— casting down upon him a most intense power, by nature exceedingly hard to approach, radiant like the fire of dissolution, desiring to burn away that wilderness of remaining karma —"

Verse 29 (shiva.kailasa.21.29)

anugṛhya mahāmantratātparyaṁ parameśvaraḥ | pūrṇo'haṁ bhāvanārūpaḥ śambhurasmīti niścalam

"— and having graced him with the essential meaning of the great mantra, the Supreme Lord establishes the unshakeable realization, 'I am full, of the very nature of being itself, I am Shambhu' —"

Verse 30 (shiva.kailasa.21.30)

anugṛhya samādhiṁ ca svadāsyaspandarūpiṇīḥ | ravyādikarmmasāmarthyarūpāḥ siddhīranargalāḥ

"— and, having graced him with samadhi, grants him unrestrained powers that are the very pulse of servitude to him, powers taking the form of mastery over the functions of the sun and the rest —"

Verse 31 (shiva.kailasa.21.31)

āyuḥkṣaye padmayoneḥ punarāvṛttivarjitām | muktiṁ ca paramāṁ tasmai prayacchati jagadguruḥ

"— and, when even the lifespan of Brahma comes to its end, the Guru of the universe grants him supreme liberation, free from any return to rebirth."

Verse 32 (shiva.kailasa.21.32)

etadeva padaṁ tasmātsarvaiśvaryaṁ samaṣṭimat | muktighaṇṭāpathaṁ ceti vedāntānāṁ viniścayaḥ

"This very state is therefore possessed of the totality of all sovereignty, and is called the direct path to liberation — this is the settled conclusion of the Vedanta."

Verse 33 (shiva.kailasa.21.33)

mumūrṣostasya mandasya yateḥ satsampradāyinaḥ | yatayaḥ sānukūlatvāttiṣṭheyuḥ paritastadā

"When that renunciant of the true tradition, though of duller capacity, is about to die, other renunciants, out of favorable regard, should stay gathered around him."

Verse 34 (shiva.kailasa.21.34)

varṇayeyuḥ sphuṭaṁ prītyā śivaṁ saṁsmārayansadā | nirguṇaṁ paramajyotiḥ praṇamya vilayāvadhi

"— and should clearly and lovingly describe these truths, ever causing him to remember Shiva, the qualityless supreme light, bowing to him until his dissolution."

Verse 36 (shiva.kailasa.21.36)

eteṣāṁ samamevātra saṁskārakrama ucyate | asaṁskṛtaśarīrāṇāṁ daurgatyaṁ naiva jāyate

For these renunciants, the same order of the funerary sacrament is prescribed throughout; for bodies that go without the elaborate rite, no evil state results.

Verse 37 (shiva.kailasa.21.37)

saṁnyasya sarvakarmāṇi śivāśrayaparā yataḥ | dehaṁ dūṣayatasteṣāṁ rājño rāṣṭraṁ ca naśyati

Since these renunciants, having renounced all action, are devoted solely to taking refuge in Shiva, the kingdom of a king who lets their bodies become defiled is destroyed.

Verse 38 (shiva.kailasa.21.38)

tadgrāmavāsinaste'pi bhaveyurbhṛśaduḥkhinaḥ | taddoṣaparihārāya vidhānaṁ caivamucyate

The inhabitants of that village too become greatly afflicted; for the removal of that fault, the following procedure is thus prescribed.

Verse 39 (shiva.kailasa.21.39)

He, humble-minded, should recite that mantra at that time, beginning "namo iriṇyāya" and ending "namo āmīvatkebhyaḥ."

Verse 40 (shiva.kailasa.21.40)

omityante japan devayajanaṁ pūrayettataḥ | tataḥ śāntirbhavettasya doṣasya hi munīśvara

Reciting Om at the end, he should then complete the sacrificial ground; thereupon, O lord of sages, that fault is truly pacified.

Verse 41 (shiva.kailasa.21.41)

putrādayo yathānyāyaṁ kuryuḥ saṁskāramuttamam | vacmi tatkṛpayā vipra sāvadhānatayā śṛṇu

Sons and other kin should duly perform the excellent funerary rite; I shall tell it out of compassion, O brahmin — listen with careful attention.

Verse 42 (shiva.kailasa.21.42)

abhyarcya snāpya śuddhodairabhyarcya kusumādibhiḥ | śrīrudracamakābhyāṁ ca rudrasūktena ca kramāt

Having worshipped the body, bathed it with pure water, worshipped it again with flowers and the rest, and with the Rudram, Chamakam, and the Rudra-sukta, in order —

Verse 43 (shiva.kailasa.21.43)

śaṅkhaṁ ca purataḥ sthāpya tajjalenābhiṣicya ca | puṣpaṁ nidhāya śirasi praṇavena pramārjayet

— having placed a conch before it and anointed it with that water, and set a flower on its head, he should wipe it clean with the Pranava.

Verse 44 (shiva.kailasa.21.44)

kaupīnādīni santyajya punaranyāni dhārayet | bhasmanoddhūlayettasya sarvāṅgaṁ vidhinā tataḥ

Having removed the loincloth and the rest, he should put new ones on it; and then, by rule, besmear its whole body with ash.

Verse 45 (shiva.kailasa.21.45)

tripuṇḍraṁ ca vidhānena tilakaṁ candanena ca | viracya puṣpairmālābhiralaṅkuryātkalevaram

Having applied the tripundra by rule, and the tilaka with sandal-paste, he should adorn the body with flowers and garlands.

Verse 46 (shiva.kailasa.21.46)

uraḥkaṇṭhaśirobāhuprakoṣṭhaśrutiṣu kramāt | rudrākṣamālābharaṇairalaṅkuryācca mantrataḥ

On the chest, neck, head, upper arms, forearms, and ears, in order, he should adorn it with rudraksha-garland ornaments, with mantra.

Verse 47 (shiva.kailasa.21.47)

sudhūpitaṁ samutthāpya śikyopari nidhāya ca | pañcabrahmamaye ramye rathe saṁsthāpayettanum

Having well fumigated it with incense and raised it, and placed it upon a sling, he should set the body upon a beautiful bier invoking the five Brahma-mantras.

Verse 48 (shiva.kailasa.21.48)

omadyaiḥ pañcabhirbrahmamantraiḥ sadyādibhiḥ krmāt | sugandhakusumairmālyairalaṅkuryādrathaṁ ca tam

With Om first among the five Brahma-mantras beginning with Sadyojata, in order, he should also adorn that bier with fragrant flowers and garlands.

Verse 49 (shiva.kailasa.21.49)

nṛtyavādyairbrāhmaṇānāṁ vedaghoṣaiśca sarvataḥ | grāmaṁ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya gacchetpretaṁ tamudvahan

With dance and music, and the Vedic chanting of brahmins resounding on every side, they should circumambulate the village and go, bearing the departed one.

Verse 50 (shiva.kailasa.21.50)

tataste yatinaḥ sarve tathā prācyāmathāpi vā | udīcyāṁ puṇyadeśe tu puṇyavṛkṣasamīpataḥ

Then all those renunciants should proceed, whether to the east or to the north, to a sacred spot near a sacred tree —

Verse 51 (shiva.kailasa.21.51)

khanitvā devayajanaṁ daṇḍamātrapramāṇataḥ | praṇavavyāhṛtibhyāṁ ca prokṣya cāstīrya ca kramāt

— having dug the sacrificial pit, of a size measuring one staff's-length, and sprinkled it with the Pranava and the Vyahritis, they should spread it in order —

Verse 52 (shiva.kailasa.21.52)

śamīpatraiśca kusumairuttarāgraṁ tadūrdhvataḥ | āstīrya darbhāṁstatpīṭhaṁ cailājinakuśottaram

— with shami leaves and flowers, tips to the north, and above that, having spread kusha grass, that seat is covered with cloth, deerskin, and kusha grass.

Verse 53 (shiva.kailasa.21.53)

praṇavena brahmabhiśca pañcagavyena tāṁ tanum | prokṣyābhiṣicya raudreṇa sūktena praṇavena ca

With the Pranava and the Brahma-mantras, and with the five products of the cow, they should sprinkle that body, and anoint it with the Rudra hymn and the Pranava —

Verse 54 (shiva.kailasa.21.54)

śaṅkhatoyenābhiṣicya mūrdhni puṣpaṁ viniḥkṣipet | tadgatasyānukūlo'sau śivasmaraṇatatparaḥ

— having anointed it with conch-water, they place a flower on its head; the officiant, favorably disposed toward the departed and intent on remembrance of Shiva —

Verse 55 (shiva.kailasa.21.55)

omityatha samuddhṛtya svastivācanapūrvakam | garte yogāsane sthāpya prāṅmukhaṁ syādyathā tathā

gandhapuṣpairalaṅkṛtvā dhūpaguggulunā tataḥ | viṣṇo havyamiti procya rakṣasveti vadan dadet

Having adorned it with sandal-paste and flowers, and then with incense of guggulu, saying "O Vishnu, this is the offering," and "protect," he should present it.

Verse 57 (shiva.kailasa.21.57)
