Verse 1 (shiva.kailasa.22.1)

सुब्रह्मण्य उवाच । एकादशेऽह्नि सम्प्राप्ते यो विधिः समुदाहृतः । तं वक्ष्ये मुनिशार्दूल यतीनां स्नेहतस्तव

subrahmaṇya uvāca | ekādaśe'hni samprāpte yo vidhiḥ samudāhṛtaḥ | taṁ vakṣye muniśārdūla yatīnāṁ snehatastava

Subrahmanya said: "O tiger among sages, out of affection for you I shall now declare the rite prescribed for renunciants when the eleventh day arrives."

Verse 2 (shiva.kailasa.22.2)

सम्मार्ज्य वेदीमालिप्य कृत्वा पुण्याहवाचनम् । प्रोक्ष्य पश्चिममारभ्य पूर्वान्तं पञ्च च क्रमात्

sammārjya vedīmālipya kṛtvā puṇyāhavācanam | prokṣya paścimamārabhya pūrvāntaṁ pañca ca kramāt

"Having swept and plastered the altar, performed the auspicious-day proclamation, and sprinkled it, one should mark five mandalas in order, beginning from the west and ending at the east."

Verse 3 (shiva.kailasa.22.3)

मण्डलान्युत्तराशास्यः कुर्यात्स्वयमवस्थितः । प्रादेशमात्रं सङ्कल्प्य चतुरस्रं च मध्यतः

maṇḍalānyuttarāśāsyaḥ kuryātsvayamavasthitaḥ | prādeśamātraṁ saṅkalpya caturasraṁ ca madhyataḥ

"Facing north, positioned thus, he should himself draw the mandalas, resolving upon a span's measure, with a square in the middle."

Verse 4 (shiva.kailasa.22.4)

बिन्दुत्रिकोणषट्कोणवृत्ताकाराणि च क्रमात् । शङ्खं च पुरतः स्थाप्य पूजोक्तक्रममार्गतः

bindutrikoṇaṣaṭkoṇavṛttākārāṇi ca kramāt | śaṅkhaṁ ca purataḥ sthāpya pūjoktakramamārgataḥ

"A point, a triangle, a hexagon, and a circle, in order; and, having placed the conch in front, according to the prescribed sequence of worship —"

Verse 5 (shiva.kailasa.22.5)

प्राणानायम्य सङ्कल्प्य पूजयित्वा सुरेश्वरीः । देवताः पञ्च पूर्वोक्ता अतिवाहिकरूपिणीः

prāṇānāyamya saṅkalpya pūjayitvā sureśvarīḥ | devatāḥ pañca pūrvoktā ativāhikarūpiṇīḥ

"— having controlled the breath and made the resolve, he should worship the five goddess-sovereigns already described, in their atiwahika forms."

Verse 6 (shiva.kailasa.22.6)

सन्त्यज्योत्तरतो दर्भानयश्च संस्पृशेत् ततः । पश्चिमादि समारभ्य षडुत्थासनमार्गतः

santyajyottarato darbhānayaśca saṁspṛśet tataḥ | paścimādi samārabhya ṣaḍutthāsanamārgataḥ

"Having set aside kusha grass to the north and touched it, then, beginning from the west, by the sixfold rite of raising the seat —"

Verse 7 (shiva.kailasa.22.7)

मण्डलानि च तेष्वन्तः पुष्पाण्याधाय पीठवत् । ॐ ह्रीमित्युक्त्वाग्निरूपां तामतिवाहिकदेवताम्

maṇḍalāni ca teṣvantaḥ puṣpāṇyādhāya pīṭhavat | oṁ hrīmityuktvāgnirūpāṁ tāmativāhikadevatām

"— having placed flowers within those mandalas as a seat, uttering 'Om Hrim,' he should invoke that atiwahika deity in the form of Fire —"

Verse 8 (shiva.kailasa.22.8)

आवाहयामि नम इत्यन्तं सर्वत्र भावयेत् । दर्शयेत्स्थापनाद्यास्तु मुद्राः प्रत्येकमादरात्

āvāhayāmi nama ityantaṁ sarvatra bhāvayet | darśayetsthāpanādyāstu mudrāḥ pratyekamādarāt

"— reciting 'I invoke, homage' at the end, everywhere; and reverently show, for each one, the mudras beginning with establishment."

Verse 9 (shiva.kailasa.22.9)

ह्रांह्रीमित्यादिना कुर्यादासामङ्गानि च क्रमात् । पाशाङ्कुशाभयाभीष्टपाणिचन्द्रोपलप्रभाः

hrāṁhrīmityādinā kuryādāsāmaṅgāni ca kramāt | pāśāṅkuśābhayābhīṣṭapāṇicandropalaprabhāḥ

"With 'hram hrim' and the rest, he should worship their limbs in order; they hold the noose, goad, and gestures of fearlessness and boon-granting, radiant like moonstone —"

Verse 10 (shiva.kailasa.22.10)

रक्ताङ्गुलीयकच्छायरञ्जिताखिलदिङ्मुखाः । रक्ताम्बरधराः हस्तपदपङ्कजशोभिताः

raktāṅgulīyakacchāyarañjitākhiladiṅmukhāḥ | raktāmbaradharāḥ hastapadapaṅkajaśobhitāḥ

"— coloring every direction with the glow of red rings, wearing red garments, their hands and feet like lotuses —"

Verse 11 (shiva.kailasa.22.11)

त्रिनेत्रोल्लासिवदनपूर्णचन्द्रमनोहराः । माणिक्यमुकुटोद्भासिचन्द्रलेखावतंसिताः

trinetrollāsivadanapūrṇacandramanoharāḥ | māṇikyamukuṭodbhāsicandralekhāvataṁsitāḥ

"— three-eyed, their radiant faces enchanting like the full moon, gleaming with ruby crowns adorned with the crescent moon —"

Verse 12 (shiva.kailasa.22.12)

कुण्डलामृष्टगण्डाश्च पीनोन्नतपयोधराः । हारकेयूरकटककाञ्चीदाममनोहराः

kuṇḍalāmṛṣṭagaṇḍāśca pīnonnatapayodharāḥ | hārakeyūrakaṭakakāñcīdāmamanoharāḥ

"— their cheeks brushed by earrings, their breasts full and raised, enchanting with necklaces, armlets, bracelets and girdles —"

Verse 13 (shiva.kailasa.22.13)

तनुमध्याः पृथुश्रोण्यो रक्तदिव्याम्बरावृताः । माणिक्यमयमञ्जीरसिञ्जत्पदसरोरुहाः । पादाङ्गुलीयकश्रोणीर्मञ्जुलातिमनोहराः

tanumadhyāḥ pṛthuśroṇyo raktadivyāmbarāvṛtāḥ | māṇikyamayamañjīrasiñjatpadasaroruhāḥ | pādāṅgulīyakaśroṇīrmañjulātimanoharāḥ

"— slender-waisted, broad-hipped, clothed in red divine garments, their lotus feet tinkling with ruby anklets, exceedingly lovely with the ornaments upon their toes."

Verse 14 (shiva.kailasa.22.14)

अनुग्रहेण मूर्तेन शिववत् किं नु साध्यते । तस्माच्छक्त्यात्ममूर्तेन सर्वं साध्यं महेशवत्

anugraheṇa mūrtena śivavat kiṁ nu sādhyate | tasmācchaktyātmamūrtena sarvaṁ sādhyaṁ maheśavat

"What indeed cannot be accomplished, as by Shiva himself, through a form embodying grace? Therefore, through a form whose very self is Shakti, everything can be accomplished, as by Mahesha."

Verse 15 (shiva.kailasa.22.15)

सर्वानुग्रहकर्त्रैव स्वीकृताः पञ्चमूर्तयः । सर्वकार्यकरा दिव्याः परानुग्रहतत्पराः

sarvānugrahakartraiva svīkṛtāḥ pañcamūrtayaḥ | sarvakāryakarā divyāḥ parānugrahatatparāḥ

"These five forms have been assumed by that very bestower of grace upon all — divine, accomplishing every task, devoted to bestowing grace upon others."

Verse 16 (shiva.kailasa.22.16)

एवं ध्यात्वा तु ताः सर्वा अनुग्रहपराः शिवाः । पादयोः पाद्यमेतासां दद्याच्छङ्खोदबिन्दुभिः

evaṁ dhyātvā tu tāḥ sarvā anugrahaparāḥ śivāḥ | pādayoḥ pādyametāsāṁ dadyācchaṅkhodabindubhiḥ

"Having thus meditated on all of them, forms of Shiva devoted to grace, he should offer foot-water to their feet with drops of conch-water."

Verse 17 (shiva.kailasa.22.17)

हस्तेष्वाचमनीयं च मौलिष्वर्घ्यं प्रदापयेत् । शङ्खोदबिन्दुभिस्तासां स्नानकर्म च भावयेत्

hasteṣvācamanīyaṁ ca mauliṣvarghyaṁ pradāpayet | śaṅkhodabindubhistāsāṁ snānakarma ca bhāvayet

"He should offer sipping-water for their hands and offering-water for their crowns, and, with drops of conch-water, perform the rite of their bathing."

Verse 18 (shiva.kailasa.22.18)

रक्ताम्बराणि दिव्यानि सोत्तरीयाणि दापयेत् । मुकुटादीन्यनर्घ्याणि दद्यादाभरणानि च

raktāmbarāṇi divyāni sottarīyāṇi dāpayet | mukuṭādīnyanarghyāṇi dadyādābharaṇāni ca

"He should offer divine red garments together with upper cloths, and give priceless crowns and other ornaments."

Verse 19 (shiva.kailasa.22.19)

सुवासितं च श्रीखण्डमक्षतांश्चातिशोभनान् । सुरभीणि मनोज्ञानि कुसुमानि च दापयेत्

suvāsitaṁ ca śrīkhaṇḍamakṣatāṁścātiśobhanān | surabhīṇi manojñāni kusumāni ca dāpayet

"He should offer fragrant sandalwood paste, most beautiful unbroken rice, and sweet-smelling, lovely flowers."

Verse 20 (shiva.kailasa.22.20)

धूपं च परमामोदं साज्यवर्तिं च दीपकम् । सर्वं समर्पयामीति प्रणवं ह्रीमुपक्रमात्

dhūpaṁ ca paramāmodaṁ sājyavartiṁ ca dīpakam | sarvaṁ samarpayāmīti praṇavaṁ hrīmupakramāt

"He should offer incense of the finest fragrance and a lamp fed by a ghee wick, saying, beginning with the Pranava and Hrim, 'I offer all this' —"

Verse 21 (shiva.kailasa.22.21)

नमोऽन्तं च ततो दद्यात्पायसं मधुनाप्लुतम् । साज्यशर्करयापूपकदलीगुडपूरितम्

namo'ntaṁ ca tato dadyātpāyasaṁ madhunāplutam | sājyaśarkarayāpūpakadalīguḍapūritam

"— and ending with 'namah,' he should then offer rice-pudding steeped in honey, and cakes filled with ghee, sugar, plantain and jaggery."

Verse 22 (shiva.kailasa.22.22)

प्रत्येकं कदलीपत्रे भरितं च सुवासितम् । भूर्भुवः स्वरिति प्रोच्य प्रोक्ष्णादीनि कारयेत्

pratyekaṁ kadalīpatre bharitaṁ ca suvāsitam | bhūrbhuvaḥ svariti procya prokṣṇādīni kārayet

"Each portion filled and fragrant on a plantain leaf; uttering 'bhur bhuvah svah,' he should perform the sprinkling and the rest."

Verse 23 (shiva.kailasa.22.23)

ॐ ह्रीमिति समुच्चार्य नैवेद्यं वह्निजायया । पानीयं नम इत्युक्त्वा परं प्रेम्णा समर्पयेत्

oṁ hrīmiti samuccārya naivedyaṁ vahnijāyayā | pānīyaṁ nama ityuktvā paraṁ premṇā samarpayet

"Uttering 'Om Hrim,' he should offer the food with the mantra to Agni's consort, and, saying 'namah,' offer water with the utmost love."

Verse 24 (shiva.kailasa.22.24)

तत उद्वासयेत् प्रीत्या पूर्वतो मुनिसत्तम । स्थलं विशोध्य गण्डूषाचमनार्घ्याणि दापयेत्

tata udvāsayet prītyā pūrvato munisattama | sthalaṁ viśodhya gaṇḍūṣācamanārghyāṇi dāpayet

"Then, O best of sages, having lovingly bid farewell to the first one invoked, and purified the site, he should offer mouth-rinsing, sipping, and offering water."

Verse 25 (shiva.kailasa.22.25)

ताम्बूलं धूपदीपौ च प्रदक्षिणनमस्कृती । विधाय प्रार्थयेदेताः शिरस्यञ्जलिमादधत्

tāmbūlaṁ dhūpadīpau ca pradakṣiṇanamaskṛtī | vidhāya prārthayedetāḥ śirasyañjalimādadhat

"Having offered betel, incense and lamp, and performed circumambulation and prostration, he should, hands joined at his head, pray to them thus —"

Verse 26 (shiva.kailasa.22.26)

श्रीमातरः सुप्रसन्ना यतिं शिवपदैषिणम् । रक्षणीयं प्रब्रुवन्तु परमेशपदाब्जयोः

śrīmātaraḥ suprasannā yatiṁ śivapadaiṣiṇam | rakṣaṇīyaṁ prabruvantu parameśapadābjayoḥ

"— 'O revered Mothers, being well pleased, declare that this renunciant, who seeks the state of Shiva, is to be protected at the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord.'"

Verse 27 (shiva.kailasa.22.27)

इति सम्प्रार्थ्य ताः सर्वा विसृज्य च यथागतम् । तासां प्रसादमुद्धृत्य कन्यकाभ्यः प्रदापयेत्

iti samprārthya tāḥ sarvā visṛjya ca yathāgatam | tāsāṁ prasādamuddhṛtya kanyakābhyaḥ pradāpayet

"Having thus prayed and dismissed them all as they came, he should take up their prasada and give it to young unmarried girls."

Verse 28 (shiva.kailasa.22.28)

गोभ्यो वा जलमध्ये वा निक्षिपेन्नान्यथा क्वचित् । अत्रैव पार्वणं कुर्यान्नैकोद्दिष्टं यतेः क्वचित्

gobhyo vā jalamadhye vā nikṣipennānyathā kvacit | atraiva pārvaṇaṁ kuryānnaikoddiṣṭaṁ yateḥ kvacit

"Or he should give it to cows, or cast it into water — never otherwise. Here he should perform the parvana rite; the ekoddishta rite is never performed for a renunciant."

Verse 29 (shiva.kailasa.22.29)

अत्रायं पार्वणश्राद्धे नियमः प्रोच्यते मया । तं शृणुष्व मुनिश्रेष्ठ येन श्रेयो भवेत्ततः

atrāyaṁ pārvaṇaśrāddhe niyamaḥ procyate mayā | taṁ śṛṇuṣva muniśreṣṭha yena śreyo bhavettataḥ

"Here I declare this rule regarding the parvana-shraddha; hear it, O best of sages, by which good fortune may come about."

Verse 30 (shiva.kailasa.22.30)

कर्ता स्नात्वा धृतप्राण उपवीती समाहितः । सपवित्रकरस्त्वस्यां पुण्यतिथ्यामिति ब्रुवन्

kartā snātvā dhṛtaprāṇa upavītī samāhitaḥ | sapavitrakarastvasyāṁ puṇyatithyāmiti bruvan

"The performer, having bathed, controlled his breath, put on the sacred thread, and composed his mind, holding the purifying kusha ring, saying 'on this auspicious tithi...' —"

Verse 31 (shiva.kailasa.22.31)

करिष्ये पार्वणं श्राद्धमिति सङ्कल्प्य चोत्तरे । दद्याद्दर्भानुत्तमांश्च ह्यासनार्थं जलं स्पृशेत्

kariṣye pārvaṇaṁ śrāddhamiti saṅkalpya cottare | dadyāddarbhānuttamāṁśca hyāsanārthaṁ jalaṁ spṛśet

"— '...I shall perform the parvana shraddha' — having thus resolved, and facing north, he should spread the finest kusha grass for the seats and touch water."

Verse 32 (shiva.kailasa.22.32)

तत्रोपवेशयेद्भक्त्या साभ्यङ्गं कृतमज्जनान् । आहूय चतुरो विप्रान् शिवभक्तान्दृढव्रतान्

tatropaveśayedbhaktyā sābhyaṅgaṁ kṛtamajjanān | āhūya caturo viprān śivabhaktāndṛḍhavratān

"There, having invited four Shiva-devoted brahmins of firm vows, who have anointed themselves with oil and bathed, he should devotedly seat them."

Verse 33 (shiva.kailasa.22.33)

विश्वेदेवार्थं भवता प्रसादः क्रियतामिति । आत्मने भवता पश्चादन्तरात्मन इत्यपि

viśvedevārthaṁ bhavatā prasādaḥ kriyatāmiti | ātmane bhavatā paścādantarātmana ityapi

"'May grace be shown by you for the sake of the Vishvedevas' — and then, likewise, 'by you, for my own self,' and 'for the inner self' —"

Verse 34 (shiva.kailasa.22.34)

परमात्मन इत्येवं प्रोच्य प्रार्थ्य च तान्यतिः । श्रद्धया वरणं तेषां कुर्याद्याथार्थ्यमादरात्

paramātmana ityevaṁ procya prārthya ca tānyatiḥ | śraddhayā varaṇaṁ teṣāṁ kuryādyāthārthyamādarāt

"— and 'for the Supreme Self' — having said this and entreated them, the renunciant should, with faith and due respect, formally invite each according to his proper role."

Verse 35 (shiva.kailasa.22.35)

पादौ प्रक्षाल्य तेषां तु प्राङ्मुखानुपवेश्य च । गन्धादिभिरलङ्कृत्य भोजयेच्च शिवाग्रतः

pādau prakṣālya teṣāṁ tu prāṅmukhānupaveśya ca | gandhādibhiralaṅkṛtya bhojayecca śivāgrataḥ

"Having washed their feet and seated them facing east, and honored them with sandal-paste and the rest, he should feed them before Shiva."

Verse 36 (shiva.kailasa.22.36)

गोमयेनोपलिप्यात्र दर्भान्प्रागग्रकल्पितान् । आस्तीर्य संयतप्राणः पिण्डानां च प्रदानकम्

gomayenopalipyātra darbhānprāgagrakalpitān | āstīrya saṁyataprāṇaḥ piṇḍānāṁ ca pradānakam

"Here, having plastered the ground with cow-dung and spread kusha grass with tips to the east, breath controlled —"

Verse 37 (shiva.kailasa.22.37)

करिष्य इति सङ्कल्प्य मण्डलत्रयमर्च्य च । आत्मानमन्तरात्मानं परमात्मनमप्यतः

kariṣya iti saṅkalpya maṇḍalatrayamarcya ca | ātmānamantarātmānaṁ paramātmanamapyataḥ

"— '...I shall perform the offering of the pinda-balls' — having thus resolved, and worshipped the three mandalas, dedicated to the self, the inner self, and the Supreme Self —"

Verse 38 (shiva.kailasa.22.38)

चतुर्थ्यन्तं वदन् पश्चादिमं पिण्डमितीरयन् । ददामीति च सम्प्रोच्य दद्यात्पिण्डान् स्वभक्तितः

caturthyantaṁ vadan paścādimaṁ piṇḍamitīrayan | dadāmīti ca samprocya dadyātpiṇḍān svabhaktitaḥ

"— naming each in the dative case, and then saying 'this is the pinda,' 'I offer it,' he should present the pinda-balls with his own devotion."

Verse 39 (shiva.kailasa.22.39)

कुशोदकं ततो दद्याद्यथाविधि विधानतः । तत उत्थाय वै कुर्यात् प्रदक्षिणनमस्कृती

kuśodakaṁ tato dadyādyathāvidhi vidhānataḥ | tata utthāya vai kuryāt pradakṣiṇanamaskṛtī

"He should then duly offer kusha-water according to rule; then, rising, perform circumambulation and prostration."

Verse 40 (shiva.kailasa.22.40)

ततो दत्त्वा ब्राह्मणेभ्यो दक्षिणां च यथाविधि । नारायणबलिं कुर्यात् तस्मिन्नेव स्थले दिने

tato dattvā brāhmaṇebhyo dakṣiṇāṁ ca yathāvidhi | nārāyaṇabaliṁ kuryāt tasminneva sthale dine

"Then, having duly given the sacrificial fee to the brahmins, he should perform the Narayana-bali on that very spot, that same day."

Verse 41 (shiva.kailasa.22.41)

रक्षार्थमेव सर्वत्र विष्णोः पूजाविधिः स्मृतः । कुर्याद्विष्णोर्महापूजां पायसान्नं निवेदयेत्

rakṣārthameva sarvatra viṣṇoḥ pūjāvidhiḥ smṛtaḥ | kuryādviṣṇormahāpūjāṁ pāyasānnaṁ nivedayet

"Everywhere, the rite of Vishnu's worship is remembered as being solely for protection; he should perform the great worship of Vishnu and offer rice-pudding."

Verse 42 (shiva.kailasa.22.42)

द्वादशाथ समाहूय ब्राह्मणान्वेदपारगान् । केशवादिभिरभ्यर्च्य गन्धपुष्पाक्षतादिभिः

dvādaśātha samāhūya brāhmaṇānvedapāragān | keśavādibhirabhyarcya gandhapuṣpākṣatādibhiḥ

"Having then invited twelve brahmins learned in the Veda, he should worship with the names Keshava and the rest, with sandal-paste, flowers, unbroken rice, and the rest."

Verse 43 (shiva.kailasa.22.43)

उपानच्छत्रवस्त्रादि दत्त्वा तेभ्यो यथाविधि । सन्तोषयेन्महाभक्त्या विविधैर्वचनैः शुभैः

upānacchatravastrādi dattvā tebhyo yathāvidhi | santoṣayenmahābhaktyā vividhairvacanaiḥ śubhaiḥ

"Having duly given them sandals, an umbrella, cloth and the rest, he should please them with great devotion, with various auspicious words."

Verse 44 (shiva.kailasa.22.44)

आस्तीर्य दर्भान्पूर्वाग्रान्भूः स्वाहा च भुवः भुवः । प्रणवादि प्रोच्य भूमौ पायसान्नं बलिं हरेत्

āstīrya darbhānpūrvāgrānbhūḥ svāhā ca bhuvaḥ bhuvaḥ | praṇavādi procya bhūmau pāyasānnaṁ baliṁ haret

"Having spread kusha grass with tips to the east, uttering 'bhuh svaha,' 'bhuvah svaha,' beginning with the Pranava, he should offer the rice-pudding as a bali upon the ground."

Verse 45 (shiva.kailasa.22.45)

एकादशाहसुविधिर्मया प्रोक्तो मुनीश्वर । द्वादशाहविधिं वक्ष्ये शृणुष्वादरतो द्विज

ekādaśāhasuvidhirmayā prokto munīśvara | dvādaśāhavidhiṁ vakṣye śṛṇuṣvādarato dvija

"O lord of sages, the excellent rite of the eleventh day has been declared by me; I shall now tell the rite of the twelfth day — listen respectfully, O twice-born."
