Verse 1 (shiva.kailasa.5.1)

īśvara uvāca parīkṣya vidhivadbhūmiṁ gaṁdhavarṇarasādibhiḥ manobhilaṣite tatra vitānavitatāmbare

Ishvara said: Having duly examined the ground by its smell, color, taste, and the like, and having found a spot pleasing to the mind, there, with a canopy spread overhead,

Verse 2 (shiva.kailasa.5.2)

supralipte mahīpṛṣṭhe darpaṇodarasannibhe aratniyugmamānena caturasraṁ prakalpayet

upon ground well smoothed and plastered, resembling the surface of a mirror, he should draw a square, each side measuring two cubits.

Verse 3 (shiva.kailasa.5.3)

tālapatraṁ samādāya tatsamāyāmavistaram tasminbhāgānprakurvīta trayodaśasamāṁ kalām

Taking a palm-leaf of that same length and breadth, he should divide it into thirteen equal parts.

Verse 4 (shiva.kailasa.5.4)

tatpatraṁ tatra nikṣipya paścimābhimukhaḥ sthitaḥ tatpūrvabhāge sudṛḍhaṁ sūtramādāya raṁjitam

Having placed that leaf there, and standing facing west, he should take, on its eastern side, a strong colored thread,

Verse 5 (shiva.kailasa.5.5)

prākpratyagdakṣiṇodak ca caturdiśi nipātayet sūtrāṇi devadeveśi navaṣaṣṭyuttaraṁ śatam

and lay it out in the four directions — east, west, south, and north. O queen of the gods of gods, these threads number one hundred and sixty-nine in all.

Verse 6 (shiva.kailasa.5.6)

koṣṭhāni syustatastasya madhyakoṣṭhaṁ tu karṇikā koṣṭhāṣṭakaṁ bahistasya dalāṣṭakamihocyate

From this, compartments are formed; the central compartment is the pericarp. The eight compartments outside it are here called the eight petals.

Verse 7 (shiva.kailasa.5.7)

dalāni śvetavarṇātri samagrāṇi prakalpayet pītarūpāṁ karṇikāṁ ca kṛtvā raktaṁ ca vṛttakam

He should make the petals entirely white, and, having made the pericarp yellow and its round rim red,

Verse 8 (shiva.kailasa.5.8)

vanabhiddaladakṣaṁ tu samārabhya sureśvari raktakṛṣṇāḥ krameṇaiva dalasandhīnvicitrayet

O queen of the gods, beginning from the petal to the right of Indra's direction, he should color the joints between the petals alternately red and black, in order.

Verse 9 (shiva.kailasa.5.9)

karṇikāyāṁ likhedyaṁtraṁ praṇavārthaprakāśakam adhaḥ pīṭhaṁ samālikhya śrīkaṇṭhaṁ ca tadūrdhvataḥ

On the pericarp he should draw the yantra that reveals the meaning of the Pranava; having drawn the seat below, and Shrikantha above it,

Verse 10 (shiva.kailasa.5.10)

taduparyyamareśaṁ ca mahākālaṁ ca madhyataḥ tanmastakasthaṁ daṇḍaṁ ca tata īśvaramālikhet

above that, Amaresha, and Mahakala in the center; and, resting at its head, the Danda, and then Ishvara, he should draw.

Verse 11 (shiva.kailasa.5.11)

śyāmena pīṭhaṁ pītena śrīkaṇṭhaṁ ca vicitrayet amareśaṁ mahākālaṁ raktaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ ca tau kramāt

He should color the seat dark, and Shrikantha yellow; Amaresha and Mahakala, those two, in order, red and black.

Verse 12 (shiva.kailasa.5.12)

kuryātsudhūmraṁ daṇḍaṁ ca dhavalaṁ ceśvaraṁ budhaḥ evaṁ yaṁtraṁ samālikhya raktaṁ sadyena veṣṭayet

The wise one should color the Danda smoky-gray, and Ishvara white. Having thus drawn the yantra, he should encircle it in red, together with the Sadyojata mantra.

Verse 13 (shiva.kailasa.5.13)

tadutthenaiva nādena vidyādīśānamīśvari tadvāsapaṁktīrgṛhṇīyādāgneyādikrameṇa vai

O Ishvari, one should recognize Ishana by the very Nada that rises from it; and he should take up the surrounding rows of compartments in order, beginning from the south-east.

Verse 14 (shiva.kailasa.5.14)

koṣṭhāni koṇabhāgeṣu catvāryetāni sundari śuklenāpūryya varṇādi catuṣkaṁ raktadhātubhiḥ

O beautiful one, these four compartments in the corner sections should be filled with white; and the four beginning ones with red pigments —

Verse 15 (shiva.kailasa.5.15)

āpūryya tāni catvāri dvārāṇi parikalpayet tatastatpārśvayordvaṁdvaṁ pītenaiva prapūrayet

having filled those four, he should lay out the doorways; then he should fill the pair on either side of them with yellow alone.

Verse 16 (shiva.kailasa.5.16)

āgneyakoṣṭhamadhye tu pītābhe caturasrake aṣṭapatraṁ likhetpadmaṁ raktābhaṁ pītakarṇikam

In the middle of the south-eastern compartment, within a square of yellow hue, he should draw an eight-petaled lotus, red in color, with a yellow pericarp.

Verse 17 (shiva.kailasa.5.17)

hakāraṁ vilikhenmadhye vinduyuktaṁ samāhitaḥ padmasya nairṛte koṣṭhe caturasrantadā likhet

With a focused mind, he should write the letter Ha, joined with the bindu, in the middle; then, in the south-western compartment of the lotus, he should draw a square.

Verse 18 (shiva.kailasa.5.18)

padmamaṣṭadalaṁ raktaṁ pītakiṁjalkakarṇikam śavargasya tṛtīyantu ṣaṣṭhasvarasamanvitam

(there he should draw) an eight-petaled red lotus with a pericarp of yellow filaments; the third letter of the Sha-group, joined with the sixth vowel,

Verse 19 (shiva.kailasa.5.19)

caturdaśasvaropetaṁ bindunādavibhūṣitam etadbījavaraṁ bhadre padmamadhye samālikhet

joined with the fourteenth vowel, and adorned with bindu and nada — O auspicious one, this excellent seed-syllable he should inscribe in the middle of the lotus.

Verse 20 (shiva.kailasa.5.20)

padmasyeśānakoṣṭhe tu tathā padmaṁ samālikhet kavargasya tṛtīyaṁ tu paṁcamasvarasaṁyutam

In the north-eastern compartment of the lotus, he should likewise draw a lotus; the third letter of the Ka-group, joined with the fifth vowel,

Verse 21 (shiva.kailasa.5.21)

vilikhenmadhyatastasya bindukaṇṭhe svalaṁkṛtam tadbāhyapaṁktitritaye pūrvādiparitaḥ kramāt

he should inscribe it in the middle, gracefully marked with the bindu at its throat; and in the three outer rows around it, in order, beginning from the east,

Verse 22 (shiva.kailasa.5.22)

koṣṭhāni paṁca gṛhrīyādgirirājasute śive madhye tu karṇikāṁ kuryātpītāṁ raktaṁ ca vṛttakam

O auspicious daughter of the mountain-king, he should take five compartments; in the center he should make the pericarp yellow, with a red circular rim.

Verse 23 (shiva.kailasa.5.23)

dalāni raktavarṇāni kalpayetkalpavittamaḥ dalabāhye tu kṛṣṇena raṁdhrāṇi paripūrayet

He who is most skilled in the procedure should make the petals red in color; and beyond the petals, he should fill the gaps between them with black.

Verse 24 (shiva.kailasa.5.24)

āgneyādīni catvāri śuklenaiva prapūrayet pūrve ṣaḍbindusahitaṁ ṣaṭkoṇaṁ kṛṣṇamālikhet

He should fill the four corner compartments, beginning with the south-east, with white alone; and in the east he should draw a black hexagon accompanied by six bindus.

Verse 25 (shiva.kailasa.5.25)

raktavarṇaṁ dakṣiṇatastrikoṇaṁ cottare tataḥ śvetābhamarddhacandraṁ ca pītavarṇaṁ ca paścime

On the south, a red triangle; then on the north, a white crescent moon; and on the west, a yellow figure.

Verse 26 (shiva.kailasa.5.26)

caturasraṁ kramātteṣu likhedbījacatuṣṭayam pūrve binduṁ samālikhya śubhraṁ kṛṣṇaṁ tu dakṣiṇe

(there he should draw) a square; and within these, in order, he should write the four seed-syllables — a white bindu in the east, a black one in the south,

Verse 27 (shiva.kailasa.5.27)

ukāramuttare raktaṁ makāraṁ paścime tataḥ akāraṁ pītamevaṁ tu kṛtvā varṇacatuṣṭayam

the syllable U in red in the north, then the syllable M in the west, and the syllable A in yellow — having thus formed the four syllables,

Verse 28 (shiva.kailasa.5.28)

sarvorddhvapaṁktyadhaḥ paṁktau samārabhya ca sundari pītaṁ śvetaṁ ca raktaṁ ca kṛṣṇaṁ ceti catuṣṭayam

O beautiful one, beginning from the row beneath the topmost row, apply the four colors — yellow, white, red, and black —

Verse 29 (shiva.kailasa.5.29)

tadadho dhavalaṁ śyāmaṁ pītaṁ raktaṁ catuṣṭayam adhastrikoṇake raktaṁ śuklaṁ pītaṁ varānane

below that, white, dark, yellow, and red — these four; and, O fair-faced one, in the triangle below, red, white, and yellow.

Verse 30 (shiva.kailasa.5.30)

evandakṣiṇamārabhya kuryātsomāntamīśvari tadbāhyapaṁktau pūrvādimadhyamāntaṁ vicitrayet

Thus, O Ishvari, beginning from the south, he should proceed up to the Soma (north-west) direction; and in the outer row of that, he should color from the east, through the middle, to the end.

Verse 31 (shiva.kailasa.5.31)

pītaṁ raktaṁ ca kṛṣṇaṁ ca śyāmaṁ śvetaṁ ca pītakam āgreyyādi samārabhya raktaṁ śyāmaṁ sitaṁ priye

Yellow, red, black, dark, white, and yellow again; O beloved, beginning from the south-east, red, dark, and white,

Verse 32 (shiva.kailasa.5.32)

raktaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ ca raktaṁ ca ṣaṭkameva prakīrtitam dakṣiṇādyaṁ maheśāni pūrvāvadhi samīritam

red, black, and red — thus a set of six is declared. O queen of Mahesha, this sequence, beginning from the south, extends as far as the east.

Verse 33 (shiva.kailasa.5.33)

nairṛtādyantu vijñeyamāgneyāvadhi ceśvari vāruṇaṁ tu samārabhya dakṣiṇāvadhi ceritama

O Ishvari, that beginning from the south-west is to be understood as extending to the south-east; and that beginning from the west is declared to extend as far as the south.

Verse 34 (shiva.kailasa.5.34)

vāyavyādyaṁ mahādevi nairṛtāvadhi ceritam somārthaṁ parameśāni vāruṇāvadhi ceritam

O great goddess, that beginning from the north-west is declared to extend as far as the south-west; O supreme queen, that for the Soma (north) direction is declared to extend as far as the west.

Verse 35 (shiva.kailasa.5.35)

īśānādyaṁ tu vijñeyaṁ vāyavyāvadhi cāmbike ityukto maṇḍalavidhirmayā tubhyaṁ ca pārvati

O Ambika, that beginning from the north-east should be understood to extend as far as the north-west. Thus, O Parvati, the rule for the mandala has been declared by Me to you.

Verse 36 (shiva.kailasa.5.36)

evaṁ maṇḍalamālikhya niyatātmā yatissvataḥ saurapūjāṁ prakurvīta sa hi tadvastutatparaḥ

Having thus drawn the mandala, the self-controlled ascetic should himself perform the worship of the sun; for he is devoted to that very object.
