The Meditation and Worship of Shiva
Verse 1 (shiva.kailasa.7.1)
ईश्वर उवाच । स्ववामे चतुरस्रं तु मण्डलं परिकल्पयेत् । ओमित्यभ्यर्च्य तस्मिंस्तु शंखमस्त्रोपशोभितम्
īśvara uvāca svavāme caturasraṁ tu maṇḍalaṁ parikalpayet omityabhyarcya tasmiṁstu śaṁkhamastropaśobhitam
Ishvara said: To his own left, he should construct a square mandala; having worshipped it with Om, he should place there a conch adorned with the astra-mark.
Verse 2 (shiva.kailasa.7.2)
स्थाप्य साधारकं तं तु प्रणवेनार्चयेत्ततः । आपूर्य्य शुद्धतोयेन चन्दनादिसुगंधिना
sthāpya sādhārakaṁ taṁ tu praṇavenārcayettataḥ āpūryya śuddhatoyena candanādisugaṁdhinā
Having placed it upon its stand, he should then worship it with the Pranava; having filled it with pure water, fragrant with sandalwood and the like,
Verse 3 (shiva.kailasa.7.3)
अभ्यर्च्य गन्धपुष्पाद्यैः प्रणवेन च सप्तधा । अभिमंत्र्य ततस्तस्मिन्धेनुमुद्रां प्रदर्शयेत्
abhyarcya gandhapuṣpādyaiḥ praṇavena ca saptadhā abhimaṁtrya tatastasmindhenumudrāṁ pradarśayet
and having worshipped it with sandal-paste, flowers, and the like, seven times with the Pranava, and having consecrated it, he should then display the cow-gesture over it.
Verse 4 (shiva.kailasa.7.4)
शंखमुद्रां च पुरतश्चतुरस्रं प्रकल्पयेत् । तदन्तरेर्द्धचन्द्रं च त्रिकोणं च तदन्तरे
śaṁkhamudrāṁ ca purataścaturasraṁ prakalpayet tadantarerddhacandraṁ ca trikoṇaṁ ca tadantare
(and) the conch-gesture. In front, he should construct a square; within it, a half-moon, and within that, a triangle,
Verse 5 (shiva.kailasa.7.5)
षट्कोणं वृत्तमेवेदं मण्डलं परिकल्पयेत् । अभ्यर्च्य गंधपुष्पाद्यैः प्रणवेनाथ मध्यतः
ṣaṭkoṇaṁ vṛttamevedaṁ maṇḍalaṁ parikalpayet abhyarcya gaṁdhapuṣpādyaiḥ praṇavenātha madhyataḥ
a hexagon, and a circle — thus he should construct this mandala; and, having worshipped it with sandal-paste, flowers, and the like, then with the Pranava at its center,
Verse 6 (shiva.kailasa.7.6)
साधारमर्घ्यपात्रं च स्थाप्य गंधादिनार्चयेत् । आपूर्य्य शुद्धतोयेन तस्मिन्पात्रे विनिःक्षिपेत्
sādhāramarghyapātraṁ ca sthāpya gaṁdhādinārcayet āpūryya śuddhatoyena tasminpātre viniḥkṣipet
having placed the arghya-vessel upon its stand, he should worship it with sandal-paste and the like; and, having filled it with pure water, he should place into that vessel:
Verse 7 (shiva.kailasa.7.7)
कुशाग्राण्यक्षताश्चैव यवव्रीहितिलानपि । आज्यसिद्धार्थ पुष्पाणि भसितं च वरानने
kuśāgrāṇyakṣatāścaiva yavavrīhitilānapi ājyasiddhārtha puṣpāṇi bhasitaṁ ca varānane
kusha-tips and unbroken rice-grains, along with barley, rice, and sesame; ghee, white mustard seed, flowers, and, O fair-faced one, sacred ash.
Verse 8 (shiva.kailasa.7.8)
सद्योजातादिभिर्मंत्रैः षडंगैः प्रणवेन च । अभ्यर्च्य गंधपुष्पाद्यैरभिमंत्र्य च वर्मणा
sadyojātādibhirmaṁtraiḥ ṣaḍaṁgaiḥ praṇavena ca abhyarcya gaṁdhapuṣpādyairabhimaṁtrya ca varmaṇā
With the mantras beginning 'Sadyojata,' with the six limbs, and with the Pranava, having worshipped it with sandal-paste, flowers, and the like, and consecrated it with the armor-mantra,
Verse 9 (shiva.kailasa.7.9)
अवगुंण्ठ्यास्त्रमंत्रेण संरक्षार्थं प्रदर्शयेत् । धेनुमुद्रां च तेनैव प्रोक्षयेदस्त्रमंत्रतः
avaguṁṇṭhyāstramaṁtreṇa saṁrakṣārthaṁ pradarśayet dhenumudrāṁ ca tenaiva prokṣayedastramaṁtrataḥ
having veiled it with the astra-mantra, he should display the gesture for the sake of protection; and, with that same water, by the astra-mantra, he should sprinkle the cow-gesture.
Verse 10 (shiva.kailasa.7.10)
स्वात्मानं गंधपुष्पादिपूजोपकरणान्यपि । पद्मस्येशानदिक्पद्मं प्रणवोच्चारपूर्वकम्
svātmānaṁ gaṁdhapuṣpādipūjopakaraṇānyapi padmasyeśānadikpadmaṁ praṇavoccārapūrvakam
(he should sprinkle) his own self, and likewise the materials of worship, such as sandal-paste and flowers; (then, preceded by the utterance of the Pranava, he should draw) the lotus in the north-east of the main lotus.
Verse 11 (shiva.kailasa.7.11)
गुर्वासनाय नम इत्यासनं परिकल्पयेत् । गुरोर्मूर्तिं च तत्रैव कल्प येदुपदेशतः
gurvāsanāya nama ityāsanaṁ parikalpayet gurormūrtiṁ ca tatraiva kalpa yedupadeśataḥ
With 'salutation to the seat of the guru,' he should construct the seat; and there, according to instruction, he should form the image of the guru.
Verse 12 (shiva.kailasa.7.12)
प्रणवं गुं गुरुभ्योन्ते नमः प्रोच्यापि देशिकम् । समावाह्य ततो ध्यायेद्दक्षिणाभिमुखं स्थितम्
praṇavaṁ guṁ gurubhyonte namaḥ procyāpi deśikam samāvāhya tato dhyāyeddakṣiṇābhimukhaṁ sthitam
Having pronounced the Pranava, then 'Gum,' then 'gurubhyah,' ending in Namah, he should invoke the teacher; then he should meditate upon him as seated, facing south.
Verse 13 (shiva.kailasa.7.13)
सुप्रसन्नमुखं सौम्यं शुद्धस्फटिकनिर्मलम् । वरदाभयहस्तं च द्विनेत्रं शिवविग्रहम्
suprasannamukhaṁ saumyaṁ śuddhasphaṭikanirmalam varadābhayahastaṁ ca dvinetraṁ śivavigraham
(the guru,) with a face full of grace, gentle, stainless as pure crystal, his hands showing the gestures of boon-giving and protection, two-eyed, his very form that of Shiva.
Verse 14 (shiva.kailasa.7.14)
एवं ध्यात्वा यजेद्गन्धपुष्पादिभिरनुक्रमात् । पद्मस्य नैर्ऋते पद्मे गणपत्यासनोपरि
evaṁ dhyātvā yajedgandhapuṣpādibhiranukramāt padmasya nairṛte padme gaṇapatyāsanopari
Having thus meditated, he should worship him in due order with sandal-paste, flowers, and the like; then, in the south-western lotus of the main lotus, upon the seat of Ganapati,
Verse 15 (shiva.kailasa.7.15)
मूर्तिम्प्रकल्प्य तत्रैव गणानां त्वेति मंत्रतः । समावाह्य ततो देवं ध्यायेदेका ग्रमानसः
mūrtimprakalpya tatraiva gaṇānāṁ tveti maṁtrataḥ samāvāhya tato devaṁ dhyāyedekā gramānasaḥ
having formed the image there, and having invoked the god with the mantra 'Gananam tva,' he should then meditate upon him with a one-pointed mind.
Verse 16 (shiva.kailasa.7.16)
रक्तवर्णं महाकायं सर्वाभरणभूषितम् । पाशांकुशेष्टदशनान्दधानङ्करपङ्कजैः
raktavarṇaṁ mahākāyaṁ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitam pāśāṁkuśeṣṭadaśanāndadhānaṅkarapaṅkajaiḥ
(Ganapati,) red in hue, of vast form, adorned with every ornament, holding in his lotus-hands the noose, the goad, and his own beloved tusk,
Verse 17 (shiva.kailasa.7.17)
गजाननम्प्रभुं सर्वविघ्नौघघ्नमुपासितुः । एवन्ध्यात्वा यजेद्गन्धपुष्पाद्यैरुपचारकैः
gajānanamprabhuṁ sarvavighnaughaghnamupāsituḥ evandhyātvā yajedgandhapuṣpādyairupacārakaiḥ
the elephant-faced lord, destroyer of the whole host of obstacles for his worshipper — having thus meditated, he should worship him with sandal-paste, flowers, and the other offerings.
Verse 18 (shiva.kailasa.7.18)
कदलीनारिकेलाम्रफललड्डुकपूर्वकम् । नैवेद्यं च समर्प्याथ नमस्कुर्याद्गजाननम्
kadalīnārikelāmraphalalaḍḍukapūrvakam naivedyaṁ ca samarpyātha namaskuryādgajānanam
having offered the food-oblation, beginning with plantains, coconut, mango fruit, and sweet balls, he should then bow to the elephant-faced god.
Verse 19 (shiva.kailasa.7.19)
पद्मस्य वायुदिक्पद्मे संकल्प्य स्कान्दमासनम् । स्कन्दमूर्तिम्प्रकल्प्याथ स्कन्दमावाहयेद्बुधः
padmasya vāyudikpadme saṁkalpya skāndamāsanam skandamūrtimprakalpyātha skandamāvāhayedbudhaḥ
In the north-western lotus of the main lotus, having resolved upon Skanda's seat, and having formed the image of Skanda, the wise one should then invoke Skanda.
Verse 20 (shiva.kailasa.7.20)
उच्चार्य्य स्कन्दगायत्रीं ध्यायेदथ कुमारकम् । उद्यदादित्यसंकाशं मयूरवरवाहनम्
uccāryya skandagāyatrīṁ dhyāyedatha kumārakam udyadādityasaṁkāśaṁ mayūravaravāhanam
Having recited the Skanda-gayatri, he should then meditate upon the youthful god, radiant like the rising sun, mounted upon his splendid peacock,
Verse 21 (shiva.kailasa.7.21)
चतुर्भुजमुदाराङ्गं मुकुटादिविभूषितम् । वरदाभयहस्तं च शक्तिकुक्कुटधारिणम्
caturbhujamudārāṅgaṁ mukuṭādivibhūṣitam varadābhayahastaṁ ca śaktikukkuṭadhāriṇam
four-armed, of noble form, adorned with a crown and other ornaments, his hands showing the gestures of boon-giving and protection, holding a spear and a rooster.
Verse 22 (shiva.kailasa.7.22)
एवन्ध्यात्वाऽथ गंधाद्यैरुपचारैरनुक्रमात् । संपूज्य पूर्वद्वारस्य दक्षशाखामुपाश्रितम्
evandhyātvā ’tha gaṁdhādyairupacārairanukramāt saṁpūjya pūrvadvārasya dakṣaśākhāmupāśritam
Having thus meditated, and having worshipped him in due order with sandal-paste and the other offerings, he should then worship the one stationed at the right doorpost of the eastern gate,
Verse 23 (shiva.kailasa.7.23)
अन्तःपुराधिपं साक्षान्नन्दिनं सम्यगर्चयेत् । चामीकराचलप्रख्यं सर्वाभरणभूषितम्
antaḥpurādhipaṁ sākṣānnandinaṁ samyagarcayet cāmīkarācalaprakhyaṁ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitam
he should duly worship the lord of the inner sanctum, Nandin himself, resplendent like a mountain of gold, adorned with every ornament.
Verse 24 (shiva.kailasa.7.24)
बालेन्दुमुकुटं सौम्यं त्रिनेत्रं च चतुर्भुजम् । दीप्तशूलमृगीटंकहेमवेत्रधरं विभुम्
bālendumukuṭaṁ saumyaṁ trinetraṁ ca caturbhujam dīptaśūlamṛgīṭaṁkahemavetradharaṁ vibhum
crowned with the crescent moon, gentle, three-eyed, four-armed, the mighty one bearing a blazing trident, a deer, an axe, and a golden staff,
Verse 25 (shiva.kailasa.7.25)
चन्द्रबिम्बाभवदनं हरिवक्त्रमथापि वा । उत्तरस्यान्तथा तस्य भार्यां च मरुतां सुताम्
candrabimbābhavadanaṁ harivaktramathāpi vā uttarasyāntathā tasya bhāryāṁ ca marutāṁ sutām
his face like the orb of the moon, or perhaps in the form of a lion's face; and, likewise, to his north, he should worship his wife, the daughter of the Maruts,
Verse 26 (shiva.kailasa.7.26)
सुयशां सुव्रतामम्बापादमण्डनतत्पराम् । संपूज्य विधिवद्गन्धपुष्पाद्यैरुपचारकैः
suyaśāṁ suvratāmambāpādamaṇḍanatatparām saṁpūjya vidhivadgandhapuṣpādyairupacārakaiḥ
of fair renown, virtuous, devoted to adorning the Mother's feet — having duly worshipped her with sandal-paste, flowers, and the other offerings,
Verse 27 (shiva.kailasa.7.27)
ततस्संप्रोक्षयेत्पद्मं सास्त्रशं खोदबिन्दुभिः । कल्पयेदासनं पश्चादाधारादि यथाक्रमात्
tatassaṁprokṣayetpadmaṁ sāstraśaṁ khodabindubhiḥ kalpayedāsanaṁ paścādādhārādi yathākramāt
he should then sprinkle the lotus with drops of conch-water, accompanied by the astra-mantra; and afterward he should construct the seat, with the Adhara and the rest, in due order.
Verse 28 (shiva.kailasa.7.28)
आधारशक्तिं कल्याणीं श्यामां ध्यायेदधो भुवि । तस्याः पुरस्तादुत्कंठमनन्तं कुंडलाकृतिम्
ādhāraśaktiṁ kalyāṇīṁ śyāmāṁ dhyāyedadho bhuvi tasyāḥ purastādutkaṁṭhamanantaṁ kuṁḍalākṛtim
He should meditate upon the auspicious Adhara-shakti, dark in hue, beneath the earth; and, before her, upon Ananta, his neck raised, coiled into the form of a spiral,
Verse 29 (shiva.kailasa.7.29)
धवलं पंचफणिनं लेलिहानमिवाम्बरम् । तस्योपर्यासनं भद्रं कंठीरवचतुष्पदम्
dhavalaṁ paṁcaphaṇinaṁ lelihānamivāmbaram tasyoparyāsanaṁ bhadraṁ kaṁṭhīravacatuṣpadam
white, five-hooded, as if licking the sky; and, above him, an auspicious seat resting upon four lion-feet,
Verse 30 (shiva.kailasa.7.30)
धर्मो ज्ञानं च वैराग्यमैश्वर्यं च पदानि वै । आग्नेयादिश्वेतपीतरक्तश्यामानि वर्णतः
dharmo jñānaṁ ca vairāgyamaiśvaryaṁ ca padāni vai āgneyādiśvetapītaraktaśyāmāni varṇataḥ
Dharma, Jnana, Vairagya, and Aishvarya are indeed its four legs, colored white, yellow, red, and dark, beginning from the south-east,
Verse 31 (shiva.kailasa.7.31)
अधर्मादीनि पूर्वादीन्युत्तरां तान्यनुक्रमात् । राजावर्तमणिप्रख्यान्यस्य गात्राणि भावयेत्
adharmādīni pūrvādīnyuttarāṁ tānyanukramāt rājāvartamaṇiprakhyānyasya gātrāṇi bhāvayet
and Adharma and its counterparts, from the east to the north, in due order; and he should contemplate the frame of the seat as resembling the lapis-lazuli gem.
Verse 32 (shiva.kailasa.7.32)
अधोर्द्ध्वच्छदनं पश्चात्कंदं नालं च कण्टकान् । दलादिकं कर्णिकाञ्च विभाव्य क्रमशोऽर्चयेत्
adhorddhvacchadanaṁ paścātkaṁdaṁ nālaṁ ca kaṇṭakān dalādikaṁ karṇikāñca vibhāvya kramaśo ’rcayet
Then, having contemplated the lower and upper coverings, the bulb, the stem, and the thorns, the petals and the rest, and the pericarp, he should worship them in order.
Verse 33 (shiva.kailasa.7.33)
दलेषु सिद्धयश्चाष्टौ केसरेषु च शक्तिकाः । रुद्रा वामादयस्त्वष्टौ पूर्वादिपरितः क्रमात्
daleṣu siddhayaścāṣṭau kesareṣu ca śaktikāḥ rudrā vāmādayastvaṣṭau pūrvādiparitaḥ kramāt
On the petals, the eight siddhis; on the filaments, the shaktis; the eight Rudras beginning with Vama, arranged all around, beginning from the east, in order.
Verse 34 (shiva.kailasa.7.34)
कर्णिकायां च वैराग्यं बीजेषु नव शक्तयः । वामाद्या एव पूर्वादि तदन्तश्च मनोन्मनी
karṇikāyāṁ ca vairāgyaṁ bījeṣu nava śaktayaḥ vāmādyā eva pūrvādi tadantaśca manonmanī
On the pericarp, Vairagya; on the seed-pods, the nine shaktis beginning with Vama, from the east; and, within that, Manonmani.
Verse 35 (shiva.kailasa.7.35)
कन्दे शिवात्मको धर्मो नाले ज्ञानं शिवाश्रयम् । कर्णिकोपरि वाह्नेयं मंडलं सौरमैन्दवम्
kande śivātmako dharmo nāle jñānaṁ śivāśrayam karṇikopari vāhneyaṁ maṁḍalaṁ sauramaindavam
In the bulb, Dharma, of the nature of Shiva; in the stem, Jnana, resting upon Shiva; above the pericarp, the orbs of fire, sun, and moon,
Verse 36 (shiva.kailasa.7.36)
आत्मविद्या शिवाख्यं च तत्त्वत्रयमतः परम् । सर्वासनोपरि सुखं विचित्रकुसुमोज्ज्वलम्
ātmavidyā śivākhyaṁ ca tattvatrayamataḥ param sarvāsanopari sukhaṁ vicitrakusumojjvalam
Atma, Vidya, and Shiva — this triad of tattvas, beyond that; and, resting comfortably above the whole seat, resplendent with many-colored flowers,
Verse 37 (shiva.kailasa.7.37)
परव्योमावकाशाख्यं विद्ययातीव भास्वरम् । परिकल्प्यासनं मूर्त्तेः पुष्पविन्यास पूर्वकम्
paravyomāvakāśākhyaṁ vidyayātīva bhāsvaram parikalpyāsanaṁ mūrtteḥ puṣpavinyāsa pūrvakam
called the space of the supreme ether, made exceedingly radiant by Vidya — having thus constructed the seat for the image, preceded by the arrangement of flowers,
Verse 38 (shiva.kailasa.7.38)
आधारशक्तिमारभ्य शुद्धविद्यासनावधि । ॐकारादिचतुर्थ्यंतं नाममन्त्रं नमोन्तकम्
ādhāraśaktimārabhya śuddhavidyāsanāvadhi oṁkārādicaturthyaṁtaṁ nāmamantraṁ namontakam
beginning with the Adhara-shakti and extending as far as the seat of pure Vidya, he should recite the name-mantra — beginning with Om, ending in the dative case, and closing with Namah,
Verse 39 (shiva.kailasa.7.39)
उच्चार्य पूजयेद्विद्वान्सर्वत्रैवं विधिक्रमः । अङ्गवक्त्रकलाभेदात्पंचब्रह्माणि पूर्ववत्
uccārya pūjayedvidvānsarvatraivaṁ vidhikramaḥ aṅgavaktrakalābhedātpaṁcabrahmāṇi pūrvavat
having thus recited it, the learned one should worship — this is the procedure throughout. By the distinction of limbs, faces, and kalas, the five Brahmas, as before,
Verse 40 (shiva.kailasa.7.40)
विन्यसेत्क्रमशो मूर्त्तौ तत्तन्मुद्राविचक्षणः । आवाहयेत्ततो देवं पुष्पाञ्जलिपुटस्थितः
vinyasetkramaśo mūrttau tattanmudrāvicakṣaṇaḥ āvāhayettato devaṁ puṣpāñjalipuṭasthitaḥ
he should place them, in order, upon the image, being skilled in each corresponding gesture; and he should then invoke the god, standing with a handful of flowers.
Verse 41 (shiva.kailasa.7.41)
सद्योजातम्प्रपद्यामीत्यारभ्योमन्तमुच्चरन् । आधारोत्थितनादं तु द्वादशग्रन्धिभेदतः
sadyojātamprapadyāmītyārabhyomantamuccaran ādhārotthitanādaṁ tu dvādaśagrandhibhedataḥ
reciting, beginning with 'Sadyojatam prapadyami,' up through the ending Om, and, through the piercing of the twelve knots, (tracing) the Nada that rises from the Adhara,
Verse 42 (shiva.kailasa.7.42)
ब्रह्मरन्धांतमुच्चार्य ध्यायेदोंकारगोचरम् । शुद्धस्फटिकसंकाशं देवं निष्कलमक्षरम्
brahmarandhāṁtamuccārya dhyāyedoṁkāragocaram śuddhasphaṭikasaṁkāśaṁ devaṁ niṣkalamakṣaram
having recited it up to the Brahmarandhra, he should meditate upon the god who is the object of the syllable Om — resplendent like pure crystal, without parts, imperishable,
Verse 43 (shiva.kailasa.7.43)
कारणं सर्वलोकानां सर्वलोकमयं परम् । अन्तर्बहिः स्थितं व्याप्य ह्यणोरल्पं महत्तमम्
kāraṇaṁ sarvalokānāṁ sarvalokamayaṁ param antarbahiḥ sthitaṁ vyāpya hyaṇoralpaṁ mahattamam
the cause of all the worlds, the supreme one who is the very substance of all worlds; abiding within and without, pervading everything, smaller than the smallest, greater than the greatest,
Verse 44 (shiva.kailasa.7.44)
भक्तानामप्रयत्नेन दृश्यमीश्वरमव्ययम् । ब्रह्मेन्द्रविष्णुरुद्राद्यैरपि देवैरगोचरम्
bhaktānāmaprayatnena dṛśyamīśvaramavyayam brahmendraviṣṇurudrādyairapi devairagocaram
seen by his devotees without effort, the imperishable Lord; beyond the reach even of the gods, beginning with Brahma, Indra, Vishnu, and Rudra,
Verse 45 (shiva.kailasa.7.45)
वेदसारञ्च विद्वद्भिरगोचरमिति श्रुतम् । आविर्मध्यान्तरहितं भेषजं भवरोगिणाम्
vedasārañca vidvadbhiragocaramiti śrutam āvirmadhyāntarahitaṁ bheṣajaṁ bhavarogiṇām
the essence of the Veda, declared by the Shruti to be beyond the grasp even of the learned; without beginning, middle, or end, the remedy for those afflicted with the disease of worldly existence.
Verse 46 (shiva.kailasa.7.46)
समाहितेन मनसा ध्यात्वैवं परमेश्वरम् । आवाहनं स्थापनं च सन्निरोधं निरीक्षणम्
samāhitena manasā dhyātvaivaṁ parameśvaram āvāhanaṁ sthāpanaṁ ca sannirodhaṁ nirīkṣaṇam
Having thus meditated upon the Supreme Lord with a composed mind, he should perform the invocation, the establishment, the confinement, and the gazing,
Verse 47 (shiva.kailasa.7.47)
नमस्कारं च कुर्वीत बध्वा मुद्राः पृथक्पृथक् । ध्यायेत्सदाशिवं साक्षाद्देवं सकलनिष्कलम्
namaskāraṁ ca kurvīta badhvā mudrāḥ pṛthakpṛthak dhyāyetsadāśivaṁ sākṣāddevaṁ sakalaniṣkalam
and the salutation, forming each gesture separately; he should meditate upon Sadashiva directly, the god who is both with form and without form.
Verse 48 (shiva.kailasa.7.48)
शुद्धस्फटिकसंकाशं प्रसन्नं शीतलद्युतिम् । विद्युद्वलयसंकाशं जटामुकुटभूषितम्
śuddhasphaṭikasaṁkāśaṁ prasannaṁ śītaladyutim vidyudvalayasaṁkāśaṁ jaṭāmukuṭabhūṣitam

its brows knit, terrible, three-eyed with round red eyes, fearsome with its fangs, hard to behold, its lower lip like a quivering young leaf —

the northern face resembles coral, adorned with dark curling locks, its three eyes full of charm, crowned with the half-moon,

पश्चिमम्पूर्णचन्द्राभं लोचनत्रितयोज्ज्वलम् । चन्द्रलेखाधरं सौम्यं मन्दस्मितमनोहरम्
paścimampūrṇacandrābhaṁ locanatritayojjvalam candralekhādharaṁ saumyaṁ mandasmitamanoharam
the western face, radiant like the full moon, resplendent with three eyes, bearing the crescent, gentle, and enchanting with its soft smile,

पञ्चमं स्फटिकप्रख्यमिन्दुरेखासमुज्ज्वलम् । अतीवसौम्यमुत्फुल्ललोचनत्रितयोज्ज्वलम्
pañcamaṁ sphaṭikaprakhyamindurekhāsamujjvalam atīvasaumyamutphullalocanatritayojjvalam
and the fifth face, resembling crystal, radiant with a streak of moonlight, exceedingly gentle, luminous with its three wide-open eyes.

आकण्ठं विद्यया तद्वदाललाटं तु शान्तया । तदूर्ध्वं शान्त्यतीताख्यकलया परया तथा

the god consisting of the five-syllabled mantra, and likewise of the six-syllabled; consisting also of the six limbs, and endowed with the six categories.

एवन्ध्यात्वाथ मद्वामभागे त्वां च मनोन्मनीम् । गौरी मिमाय मन्त्रेण प्रणवाद्येन भक्तितः
evandhyātvātha madvāmabhāge tvāṁ ca manonmanīm gaurī mimāya mantreṇa praṇavādyena bhaktitaḥ
Having thus meditated, he should then meditate, with devotion, upon you, Manonmani, on My left side, using the mantra 'Gaurir mimaya,' preceded by the Pranava.
Verse 65 (shiva.kailasa.7.65)
आवाह्य पूर्ववत्कुर्यान्नमस्कारांतमी श्वरि । ध्यायेत्ततस्त्वां देवेशि समाहितमना मुनिः
āvāhya pūrvavatkuryānnamaskārāṁtamī śvari dhyāyettatastvāṁ deveśi samāhitamanā muniḥ
Having invoked her, O Ishvari, he should proceed as before, up through the salutation; then, O queen of gods, the sage, with a composed mind, should meditate upon you.
Verse 66 (shiva.kailasa.7.66)
प्रफुल्लोत्पलपत्राभां विस्तीर्णायतलोचनाम् । पूर्णचन्द्राभवदनान्नील कुंचितमूर्द्धजाम्
praphullotpalapatrābhāṁ vistīrṇāyatalocanām pūrṇacandrābhavadanānnīla kuṁcitamūrddhajām
(the goddess) resembling the petal of a full-blown blue lotus, with wide, long eyes, her face like the full moon, her hair dark and curling,

नीलोत्पलदलप्रख्याञ्चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखराम् । अतिवृत्तघनोत्तुंगस्निग्धपीनपयोधराम्
nīlotpaladalaprakhyāñcandrārdhakṛtaśekharām ativṛttaghanottuṁgasnigdhapīnapayodharām
resembling the petal of a blue lotus, crowned with the half-moon, her breasts full, round, high, glossy, and firm,

तनुमध्याम्पृथुश्रोणीम्पीतसूक्ष्मतराम्बराम् । सर्वाभरणसम्पन्नां ललाटतिलकोज्ज्वलाम्
tanumadhyāmpṛthuśroṇīmpītasūkṣmatarāmbarām sarvābharaṇasampannāṁ lalāṭatilakojjvalām
slender-waisted, broad-hipped, clad in fine yellow raiment, adorned with every ornament, resplendent with the tilaka on her brow,
Verse 69 (shiva.kailasa.7.69)
विचित्रपुष्पसंकीर्णकेशपाशोपशोभिताम् । सर्वतोऽनुगुणाकारां किंचिल्लज्जानताननाम्
vicitrapuṣpasaṁkīrṇakeśapāśopaśobhitām sarvato ’nuguṇākārāṁ kiṁcillajjānatānanām
beautified with a braid of hair interwoven with many-colored flowers, of a form pleasing in every respect, her face bowed slightly in modesty,
Verse 70 (shiva.kailasa.7.70)
हेमारविन्दं विलसद्दधानां दक्षिणे करे । चण्डवच्चामरं हस्तं न्यस्यासीनां सुखासने
hemāravindaṁ vilasaddadhānāṁ dakṣiṇe kare caṇḍavaccāmaraṁ hastaṁ nyasyāsīnāṁ sukhāsane
holding a resplendent golden lotus in her right hand, with a chowrie in her other hand, seated comfortably upon her seat.
Verse 71 (shiva.kailasa.7.71)
एवम्मान्त्वां च देवेशि ध्यात्वा नियतमानसः । स्नापयेच्छंखतोयेन प्रणवप्रोक्षणक्रमात्
evammāntvāṁ ca deveśi dhyātvā niyatamānasaḥ snāpayecchaṁkhatoyena praṇavaprokṣaṇakramāt
Having thus meditated upon you and upon Me, O queen of gods, with a disciplined mind, he should bathe the images with conch-water, following the procedure of sprinkling with the Pranava.
Verse 72 (shiva.kailasa.7.72)
भवे भवे नातिभव इति पाद्यम्प्रकल्पयेत् । वामाय नम इत्युक्त्वा दद्यादाचमनीयकम्
bhave bhave nātibhava iti pādyamprakalpayet vāmāya nama ityuktvā dadyādācamanīyakam
With 'bhave bhave nātibhave,' he should offer the water for washing the feet; and, having said 'salutation to Vama,' he should offer the water for sipping.
Verse 73 (shiva.kailasa.7.73)
ज्येष्ठाय नम इत्युक्त्वा शुभ्रवस्त्रम्प्रकल्पयेत् । श्रेष्ठाय नम इत्युक्त्वा दद्याद्यज्ञोपवीतकम्
jyeṣṭhāya nama ityuktvā śubhravastramprakalpayet śreṣṭhāya nama ityuktvā dadyādyajñopavītakam
Having said 'salutation to Jyeshtha,' he should offer a white garment; and, having said 'salutation to Shreshtha,' he should offer the sacred thread.
Verse 74 (shiva.kailasa.7.74)
रुद्राय नम इत्युक्त्वा पुनराचमनीयकम् । कालाय नम इत्युक्त्वा गन्धन्दद्यात्सुसंस्कृतम्
rudrāya nama ityuktvā punarācamanīyakam kālāya nama ityuktvā gandhandadyātsusaṁskṛtam
Having said 'salutation to Rudra,' he should again offer the sipping-water; and, having said 'salutation to Kala,' he should offer well-prepared sandal-paste.
Verse 75 (shiva.kailasa.7.75)
कलाविकरणाय नमोऽक्षतं च परिकल्पयेत् । बलविकरणाय नम इति पुष्पाणि दापयेत्
kalāvikaraṇāya namo ’kṣataṁ ca parikalpayet balavikaraṇāya nama iti puṣpāṇi dāpayet
With 'salutation to Kalavikarana,' he should offer unbroken rice-grains; and with 'salutation to Balavikarana,' he should present flowers.
Verse 76 (shiva.kailasa.7.76)
बलाय नम इत्युक्त्वा धूपन्दद्यात्प्र यत्नतः । बलप्रमथनायेति सुदीपं चैव दापयेत्
balāya nama ityuktvā dhūpandadyātpra yatnataḥ balapramathanāyeti sudīpaṁ caiva dāpayet
Having said 'salutation to Bala,' he should diligently offer incense; and, with 'to Balapramathana,' he should also present a fine lamp.
Verse 77 (shiva.kailasa.7.77)
ब्रह्मभिश्च षडंगैश्च ततो मातृकया सह । प्रणवेन शिवेनैव शक्तियुक्तेन च क्रमात्
brahmabhiśca ṣaḍaṁgaiśca tato mātṛkayā saha praṇavena śivenaiva śaktiyuktena ca kramāt
then, together with the Brahmas and the six limbs, with the Matrika, with the Pranava, and with the Shiva-mantra joined with the Shakti, in order,
Verse 78 (shiva.kailasa.7.78)
मुद्राः प्रदर्शयेन्मह्यन्तुभ्यञ्च वरवर्णिनि । मयि प्रकल्पयेत्पूर्वमुपचारांस्ततस्त्वयि
mudrāḥ pradarśayenmahyantubhyañca varavarṇini mayi prakalpayetpūrvamupacārāṁstatastvayi
O most beautiful one, he should display the gestures both to Me and to you; he should first offer the services to Me, and thereafter to you.
Verse 79 (shiva.kailasa.7.79)
यदा त्वयि प्रकुर्वीत स्त्रीलिंगं योजयेत्तदा । इयानेव हि भेदोऽस्ति नान्यः पार्वति कश्चन
yadā tvayi prakurvīta strīliṁgaṁ yojayettadā iyāneva hi bhedo ’sti nānyaḥ pārvati kaścana
When he performs the rite for you, he should then apply the feminine gender to the mantras; this alone, O Parvati, is the difference — there is no other whatsoever.
Verse 80 (shiva.kailasa.7.80)
एवन्ध्यानम्पूजनं च कृत्वा सम्यग्विधानतः । ममावरणपूजां च प्रारभेत विचक्षणः
evandhyānampūjanaṁ ca kṛtvā samyagvidhānataḥ mamāvaraṇapūjāṁ ca prārabheta vicakṣaṇaḥ
Having thus performed the meditation and worship correctly, according to the prescribed procedure, the discerning one should then begin the worship of My surrounding enclosures.
