The Worship of the Five Enclosures
Verse 1 (shiva.kailasa.8.1)
ईश्वर उवाच । अत्रास्ति च महादेवि खल्वावरणपंचकम् । पंचावरणपूजान्तु प्रारभेत यथाक्रमम्
īśvara uvāca atrāsti ca mahādevi khalvāvaraṇapaṁcakam paṁcāvaraṇapūjāntu prārabheta yathākramam
Ishvara said: Here, O great goddess, there are indeed five enclosures; one should begin the worship of these five enclosures in due order.
Verse 2 (shiva.kailasa.8.2)
प्रथमम्पूजितौ यत्र तत्रैव क्रमशस्सुधीः । गन्धाद्यैरर्चयेत्पूर्वं देवौ हेरंबषण्मुखौ
prathamampūjitau yatra tatraiva kramaśassudhīḥ gandhādyairarcayetpūrvaṁ devau heraṁbaṣaṇmukhau
Where the first deities were worshipped, there, in that very place, the wise one should first worship, in order, with sandal-paste and the like, the two gods Heramba and Shanmukha.
Verse 3 (shiva.kailasa.8.3)
पंच ब्रह्माणि परितो वृत्ते सम्पूजयेत्क्रमात् । ईशानदेशे पूर्वे च दक्षिणे चोत्तरे तथा
paṁca brahmāṇi parito vṛtte sampūjayetkramāt īśānadeśe pūrve ca dakṣiṇe cottare tathā
He should worship the five Brahmas in order, all around the circle — in the north-east, the east, the south, and likewise the north,
Verse 4 (shiva.kailasa.8.4)
पश्चिमे च ततस्तस्मिन्षडंगानि समर्चयेत । आग्नेये च तथैशाने नैर्ऋते वायुदेशके
paścime ca tatastasminṣaḍaṁgāni samarcayeta āgneye ca tathaiśāne nairṛte vāyudeśake
and in the west; then, within that circle, he should worship the six limbs — in the south-east, and likewise the north-east, the south-west, and the north-west,
Verse 5 (shiva.kailasa.8.5)
मध्ये नेत्रन्तद्वदस्त्रम्पूर्वादिपरितः क्रमात् । प्रथमावरणम्प्रोक्तं द्वितीयावरणं शृणु
madhye netrantadvadastrampūrvādiparitaḥ kramāt prathamāvaraṇamproktaṁ dvitīyāvaraṇaṁ śṛṇu
and, in the middle, the Netra-mantra, and likewise the Astra-mantra, arranged all around, beginning from the east, in order. Thus the first enclosure has been declared; now hear of the second enclosure.
Verse 6 (shiva.kailasa.8.6)
अनन्तम्पूर्वदिक्पत्रे सूक्ष्मन्दक्षिणतस्तथा । शिवोत्तमं पश्चिमत एकनेत्रन्तथोत्तरे
anantampūrvadikpatre sūkṣmandakṣiṇatastathā śivottamaṁ paścimata ekanetrantathottare
Ananta in the eastern petal, and likewise Sukshma on the south; Shivottama on the west, and likewise Ekanetra on the north;
Verse 7 (shiva.kailasa.8.7)
एकरुद्रन्तथैशाने त्रिमूर्तिं वह्निदिग्दले । श्रीकण्ठं नैर्ऋते वायौ शिखण्डीशं समर्चयेत्
ekarudrantathaiśāne trimūrtiṁ vahnidigdale śrīkaṇṭhaṁ nairṛte vāyau śikhaṇḍīśaṁ samarcayet
and likewise Ekarudra in the north-east; Trimurti in the south-east petal; Shrikantha in the south-west; and Shikhandisha he should worship in the north-west.
Verse 8 (shiva.kailasa.8.8)
द्वितीयावरणे चैव पूज्यास्ते चक्रवर्तिनः । पूर्वद्वारस्य मध्ये तु वृषेशानम्प्रपूजयेत्
dvitīyāvaraṇe caiva pūjyāste cakravartinaḥ pūrvadvārasya madhye tu vṛṣeśānamprapūjayet
These universal sovereigns are indeed to be worshipped in the second enclosure. In the middle of the eastern doorway, he should worship Vrisheshana.
Verse 9 (shiva.kailasa.8.9)
तद्दक्षिणे नन्दिनञ्च महाकालन्तदुत्तरे । भृंगीशन्दक्षिणद्वारपश्चिमे सम्प्रपूजयेत्
taddakṣiṇe nandinañca mahākālantaduttare bhṛṁgīśandakṣiṇadvārapaścime samprapūjayet
On its right, Nandin; and on its left, Mahakala; and, to the west of the southern doorway, he should duly worship Bhringisha.
Verse 10 (shiva.kailasa.8.10)
तत्पूर्वकोष्ठे गन्धाद्यैस्सम्प्रपूज्य विनायकम् । पश्चिमोत्तरकोष्ठे च वृषभन्दक्षिणे गुहम्
tatpūrvakoṣṭhe gandhādyaissamprapūjya vināyakam paścimottarakoṣṭhe ca vṛṣabhandakṣiṇe guham
having duly worshipped Vinayaka with sandal-paste and the like in the compartment to its east, he should worship the bull in the north-western compartment, and Guha on the south,
Verse 11 (shiva.kailasa.8.11)
उत्तरद्वारपूर्वे तु प्रदक्षिणविधानतः । नामाष्टकविधानेन पूजयेदुच्यते हि तत्
uttaradvārapūrve tu pradakṣiṇavidhānataḥ nāmāṣṭakavidhānena pūjayeducyate hi tat
and, to the east of the northern doorway, by the procedure of circumambulation, he should worship according to the rite of the eightfold name — which is now declared.
Verse 12 (shiva.kailasa.8.12)
भवं शर्वं तथेशानं रुद्रम्पशुपतिम्पुनः । उग्रम्भीमम्महादेवन्तृतीयावरणन्त्विदम्
bhavaṁ śarvaṁ tatheśānaṁ rudrampaśupatimpunaḥ ugrambhīmammahādevantṛtīyāvaraṇantvidam
Bhava, Sharva, and likewise Ishana; Rudra, and again Pashupati; Ugra, Bhima, and Mahadeva — this indeed is the third enclosure.
Verse 13 (shiva.kailasa.8.13)
यो वेदादौ स्वर इति समावाह्य महेश्वरम् । पूजयेत्पूर्वदिग्भागे कमले कर्णिकोपरि
yo vedādau svara iti samāvāhya maheśvaram pūjayetpūrvadigbhāge kamale karṇikopari
Having invoked Maheshvara with the mantra 'yo vedādau svaraḥ,' he should worship him above the pericarp of the lotus, in the eastern quarter.
Verse 14 (shiva.kailasa.8.14)
ईश्वरम्पूर्वदिक्पत्रे विश्वेशन्दक्षिणे ततः । सौम्ये तु परमेशानं सर्वेशम्प श्चिमे यजेत्
īśvarampūrvadikpatre viśveśandakṣiṇe tataḥ saumye tu parameśānaṁ sarveśampa ścime yajet
He should worship Ishvara in the eastern petal, then Vishvesha on the south; Parameshana on the north; and Sarvesha on the west.
Verse 15 (shiva.kailasa.8.15)
दक्षिणे तु यजेद्रुद्रमावोराजानमित्यृचा । आवाह्य गन्धपुष्पाद्यैः कर्णिकायान्दलेषु च
dakṣiṇe tu yajedrudramāvorājānamityṛcā āvāhya gandhapuṣpādyaiḥ karṇikāyāndaleṣu ca
On the south, having invoked Rudra with the verse 'āvo rājānam,' he should worship him with sandal-paste, flowers, and the like, upon the pericarp and among the petals.
Verse 16 (shiva.kailasa.8.16)
शिवः पूर्वे दक्षिणतो हर उत्तरतो मृडः । भवः पश्चिमदिक्पत्रे पूज्या एते यथाक्रमम्
śivaḥ pūrve dakṣiṇato hara uttarato mṛḍaḥ bhavaḥ paścimadikpatre pūjyā ete yathākramam
Shiva in the east, Hara on the south, Mrida on the north, and Bhava in the western petal — these are to be worshipped in due order.
Verse 17 (shiva.kailasa.8.17)
उत्तरे विष्णुमावाह्य गन्धपुष्पादिभिर्यजेत् । प्रतद्विष्णुरिति प्रोच्य कर्णिकायान्दलेषु च
uttare viṣṇumāvāhya gandhapuṣpādibhiryajet pratadviṣṇuriti procya karṇikāyāndaleṣu ca
On the north, having invoked Vishnu, he should worship him with sandal-paste, flowers, and the like, reciting 'pra tad viṣṇuḥ,' upon the pericarp and among the petals.
Verse 18 (shiva.kailasa.8.18)
वासुदेवम्पूर्वभागे दक्षिणे चानिरुद्धकम् । सौम्ये संकर्षणञ्चैव प्रद्युम्नम्पश्चिमे यजेत्
vāsudevampūrvabhāge dakṣiṇe cāniruddhakam saumye saṁkarṣaṇañcaiva pradyumnampaścime yajet
Vasudeva in the eastern part, and Aniruddha on the south; and, on the north, Sankarshana; and he should worship Pradyumna on the west.
Verse 19 (shiva.kailasa.8.19)
ब्रह्माणम्पश्चिमे पद्मे समावाह्य समर्चयेत् । हिरण्यगर्भः समवर्तत इति मंत्रेण मंत्रवित्
brahmāṇampaścime padme samāvāhya samarcayet hiraṇyagarbhaḥ samavartata iti maṁtreṇa maṁtravit
Having duly invoked Brahma in the western lotus, one who knows the mantra should worship him with the mantra 'Hiraṇyagarbhaḥ samavartata.'
Verse 20 (shiva.kailasa.8.20)
हिरण्यगर्भं पूर्वस्यां विराजन्दक्षिणे ततः । उत्तरे पुष्करञ्चैव कालम्पश्चिमतो यजेत्
hiraṇyagarbhaṁ pūrvasyāṁ virājandakṣiṇe tataḥ uttare puṣkarañcaiva kālampaścimato yajet
Hiranyagarbha in the east; then Viraja on the south; and, on the north, Pushkara; and he should worship Kala on the west.
Verse 21 (shiva.kailasa.8.21)
सर्वोर्द्ध्वपंक्तौ पूर्वादिप्रदक्षिणविधानतः । तत्तत्स्थानेषु संपूज्य लोकपालाननुक्रमात्
sarvorddhvapaṁktau pūrvādipradakṣiṇavidhānataḥ tattatsthāneṣu saṁpūjya lokapālānanukramāt
In the topmost row, by the procedure of circumambulation beginning from the east, having duly worshipped, each in his own place, the guardians of the directions, in order,
Verse 22 (shiva.kailasa.8.22)
रान्तंपान्तं तथा ज्ञान्तं लान्तं लान्तमपूर्वकम् । षान्तं सान्तञ्च वेदाद्यं श्रीबीजञ्च दशक्रमात्
rāntaṁpāntaṁ tathā jñāntaṁ lāntaṁ lāntamapūrvakam ṣāntaṁ sāntañca vedādyaṁ śrībījañca daśakramāt
ending in Ra, in Pa, and likewise in Jña, in La, and again in La; ending in Ṣa and in Sa; and Vedadi, and the Shri-seed — in this sequence of ten,
Verse 23 (shiva.kailasa.8.23)
बीजानि लोकपालानामेतैरेतान्समर्चयेत् । नैर्ऋते चोत्तरे तद्वदीशानस्य च दक्षिणे
bījāni lokapālānāmetairetānsamarcayet nairṛte cottare tadvadīśānasya ca dakṣiṇe
these are the seed-syllables of the guardians of the directions; with these he should worship them accordingly — likewise in the south-west, the north, and to the south of Ishana's quarter,
Verse 24 (shiva.kailasa.8.24)
ब्रह्म विष्णू च विधिना पूजयेदुपचारकैः । बाह्यरेखासु देवेशम्पञ्चमावरणे यजेत्
brahma viṣṇū ca vidhinā pūjayedupacārakaiḥ bāhyarekhāsu deveśampañcamāvaraṇe yajet
he should worship Brahma and Vishnu, according to rule, with the customary offerings. In the outer lines, he should worship the Lord of the gods in the fifth enclosure.
Verse 25 (shiva.kailasa.8.25)
श्रीमत्त्रिशूलमीशाने वज्रं माहेन्द्रदिङ्मुखे । परशुं वह्निदिग्भागे याम्ये सायकमर्चयेत्
śrīmattriśūlamīśāne vajraṁ māhendradiṅmukhe paraśuṁ vahnidigbhāge yāmye sāyakamarcayet
The glorious trident in the north-east; the thunderbolt facing the direction of Indra; the axe in the south-east; and he should worship the arrow in the direction of Yama;
Verse 26 (shiva.kailasa.8.26)
नैर्ऋते तु यजेत्खड्गम्पाशं वरुणगोचरे । अंकुशं मारुते भागे पिनाकं चोत्तरे यजेत्
nairṛte tu yajetkhaḍgampāśaṁ varuṇagocare aṁkuśaṁ mārute bhāge pinākaṁ cottare yajet
and on the south-west, he should worship the sword; the noose in the direction of Varuna; the goad in the quarter of Maruta; and he should worship the Pinaka bow on the north.
Verse 27 (shiva.kailasa.8.27)
पश्चिमाभिमुखं रौद्रं क्षेत्रपालं समर्चयेत् । यथाविधि विधानज्ञश्शिवप्रीत्यर्थमेव च
paścimābhimukhaṁ raudraṁ kṣetrapālaṁ samarcayet yathāvidhi vidhānajñaśśivaprītyarthameva ca
He who knows the procedure should worship, according to rule, and solely for the sake of pleasing Shiva, the fierce Kshetrapala, facing west.
Verse 28 (shiva.kailasa.8.28)
कृताञ्जलिपुटास्सर्वे चिन्त्याः स्मितमुखाम्बुजाः । सादरं प्रेक्षमाणाश्च देवं देवीञ्च सर्वदा
kṛtāñjalipuṭāssarve cintyāḥ smitamukhāmbujāḥ sādaraṁ prekṣamāṇāśca devaṁ devīñca sarvadā
All these attendant deities are to be contemplated with joined palms, their lotus-faces smiling, gazing reverently and continuously upon the God and the Goddess.
Verse 29 (shiva.kailasa.8.29)
इत्थमावरणाभ्यर्चां कृत्वा विक्षेपशान्तये । पुनरभ्यर्च्य देवेशम्प्रणवं च शिवं वदेत्
itthamāvaraṇābhyarcāṁ kṛtvā vikṣepaśāntaye punarabhyarcya deveśampraṇavaṁ ca śivaṁ vadet
Having thus performed the worship of the enclosures, and, for the stilling of distraction, having worshipped the Lord of gods once more, he should utter the Pranava together with the name of Shiva.
Verse 30 (shiva.kailasa.8.30)
एवमभ्यर्च्य विधिवद्गन्धाद्यैरुपचारकैः । उपचर्य्य ततो दद्यान्नैवेद्यं विधिसाधितम्
evamabhyarcya vidhivadgandhādyairupacārakaiḥ upacaryya tato dadyānnaivedyaṁ vidhisādhitam
Having thus duly worshipped him with sandal-paste and the other offerings, and having attended upon him, he should then offer the food-oblation, prepared according to rule.
Verse 31 (shiva.kailasa.8.31)
पुनराचमनीयं च दद्यादर्घ्यं यथा पुरा । ततो निवेद्य पानीयन्ताम्बूलं चोपदेशतः
punarācamanīyaṁ ca dadyādarghyaṁ yathā purā tato nivedya pānīyantāmbūlaṁ copadeśataḥ
He should again offer the sipping-water and the arghya, as before; then, having offered water to drink and betel, according to the teaching,
Verse 32 (shiva.kailasa.8.32)
नीराजनादिकं कृत्वा पूजाशेषं समापयेत् । ध्यात्वा देवं च देवीञ्च मनुमष्टोत्तरं जपेत्
nīrājanādikaṁ kṛtvā pūjāśeṣaṁ samāpayet dhyātvā devaṁ ca devīñca manumaṣṭottaraṁ japet
having performed the waving of lamps and the rest, he should complete the remainder of the worship; and, having meditated upon the God and the Goddess, he should recite the mantra one hundred and eight times.
Verse 33 (shiva.kailasa.8.33)
तत उत्थाय रचितपुष्पाञ्जलिपुटः स्थितः । जपेद्ध्यात्वा महादेवं यो देवानामिति क्रमात्
tata utthāya racitapuṣpāñjalipuṭaḥ sthitaḥ japeddhyātvā mahādevaṁ yo devānāmiti kramāt
Then, rising, and standing with a handful of arranged flowers, having meditated upon Mahadeva, he should recite in order the mantra beginning 'yo devānām'...
Verse 34 (shiva.kailasa.8.34)
यो वेदादौ स्वरः प्रोक्त इत्यंतम्परमेश्वरि । पुष्पाञ्जलिन्ततो दत्त्वा त्रिः प्रदक्षिणमाचरेत्
yo vedādau svaraḥ prokta ityaṁtamparameśvari puṣpāñjalintato dattvā triḥ pradakṣiṇamācaret
O supreme goddess, up to 'yo vedādau svaraḥ prokta.' Then, having offered the handful of flowers, he should perform circumambulation three times.
Verse 35 (shiva.kailasa.8.35)
साष्टांगम्प्रणमेत्तं स भक्त्या परमयान्वितः । पुनः प्रदक्षिणां कृत्वा प्रणमेत्पुनरेकधा
sāṣṭāṁgampraṇamettaṁ sa bhaktyā paramayānvitaḥ punaḥ pradakṣiṇāṁ kṛtvā praṇametpunarekadhā
Filled with supreme devotion, he should prostrate before him with all eight limbs touching the ground; and, having again circumambulated, he should bow once more, a single time.
Verse 36 (shiva.kailasa.8.36)
स्थित्वासने समभ्यर्च्य देवं नामाष्टकेन च । साधु वासाधु वा कर्म यद्यदाचरितं मया
sthitvāsane samabhyarcya devaṁ nāmāṣṭakena ca sādhu vāsādhu vā karma yadyadācaritaṁ mayā
Seated upon his seat, having worshipped the god with the eightfold name, (he should say:) 'Whatever action, good or bad, I have performed,
Verse 37 (shiva.kailasa.8.37)
तत्सर्वं भगवञ्छम्भो भवदाराधनम्परम् । इति शंखोदकेनैव सपुष्पेण समर्पयेत्
tatsarvaṁ bhagavañchambho bhavadārādhanamparam iti śaṁkhodakenaiva sapuṣpeṇa samarpayet
all of it, O blessed Shambhu, is but the supreme worship of you.' Thus, with conch-water alone, together with a flower, he should offer it up.
Verse 38 (shiva.kailasa.8.38)
पूज्यं पुनस्समभ्यर्च्य सार्थं नामाष्टकं जपेत् । तदेव शृणु देवेशि संब्रुवे तव भक्तितः
pūjyaṁ punassamabhyarcya sārthaṁ nāmāṣṭakaṁ japet tadeva śṛṇu deveśi saṁbruve tava bhaktitaḥ
Having again worshipped the worshipful one, he should recite the eightfold name together with its meaning. O queen of gods, hear that very name; I shall now declare it to you, out of devotion.
