Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.17.1)
vāyuruvāca | evaṁ labdhvā parāṁ śaktimīśvarādeva śāśvatīm | maithunaprabhavāṁ sṛṣṭiṁ kartṛkāmaḥ prajāpatiḥ
Vayu said: Having thus obtained from the Lord that supreme, eternal power, Prajapati (Brahma) became desirous of creating the world born of sexual union.
Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.17.2)
svayamapyarddhato nārī cārddhena puruṣo'bhavat | yārddhena nārī sā tasmācchatarūpā vyajāyata
He himself became, in one half, a woman, and in the other half, a man; from the half that was woman, Shatarupa was born.
Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.17.3)

Brahma created Viraj; he himself, from that other half, became the man — and he, the first man, is called Svayambhuva Manu.
Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.17.4)
sā devī śatarūpā tu tapaḥ kṛtvā suduścaram | bharttāraṁ dīptayaśasaṁ manumevānvapadyata
The goddess Shatarupa, having performed extremely arduous austerity, obtained as her husband that same radiant and glorious Manu.

tasmāttu śatarūpā sā putradvayamasūyata | priyavratottānapādau putrau putravatāṁ varau
From him Shatarupa bore two sons, Priyavrata and Uttanapada, the foremost among those blessed with sons.
Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.17.6)

And two most fortunate daughters were born as well, from whom all these creatures descend — one known as Akuti, the other remembered as Prasuti.
Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.17.7)

ākūtyāṁ mithunaṁ jajñe mānasasya ruceḥ śubham | yajñaśca dakṣiṇā caiva yābhyāṁ saṁvartitaṁ jagat
From the mind-born Ruchi, in Akuti was born an auspicious twin pair, Yajna and Dakshina, by whom this world is sustained.
Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.17.9)

Those foremost among sages took Khyati and the other daughters as wives; and the thirteen sons of Dharma, beginning with Kama and ending with Yashas, are these.
Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.17.15)

dharmasya jajñire tāstu śraddhādyāḥ susukhottarāḥ | duḥkhottarāśca hiṁsāyāmadharmasya ca santatau
The offspring born to Dharma from Shraddha and the other wives ended in great happiness, while those born through Himsa and in the line of Adharma ended in sorrow.
Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.17.16)

sa eṣa tāmasaḥ sargo jajñe dharmaniyāmakaḥ | yā sā dakṣasya duhitā rudrasya dayitā satī
Thus this dark, tamasic creation arose, checking the bounds of righteousness. And she who was the daughter of Daksha and the beloved of Rudra, Sati —
Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.17.18)
bhartṛnindāprasaṅgena tyaktvā dākṣāyiṇīṁ tanum | dakṣaṁ ca dakṣabhāryyāṁ ca vinindya saha bandhubhiḥ

ityeṣa ṛṣisargastu sānubandhaḥ prakīrtitaḥ | samāsādvistarādvaktumaśakyo'yamiti dvijāḥ
Thus this creation of the sages, together with their descendants, has been told in brief. O twice-born ones, it is impossible to recount it in full detail.
Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.17.37)

Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.17.39)

And that which blazes in the sun is called Shuchi, the solar fire. Havyavaha, Kavyavaha, and Saharaksha — these three belong to the next generation.
Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.17.40)

kāmyanaimittikājasrakarmasu triṣu saṁsthitāḥ | sarve tapasvino jñeyāḥ sarve vratabhṛtastathā
All of them are established in the three kinds of rites — those performed for desire, those performed on special occasions, and the constant daily ones; know all of them as ascetics and as observers of vows.
Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.17.42)
sarve rudrātmakāścaiva sarve rudraparāyaṇāḥ | tasmādagnimukhe yattad hutaṁ syādeva kenacit
All of them are of the nature of Rudra, and all are devoted to Rudra. Therefore whatever oblation is offered by anyone into the mouth of fire,
Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.17.43)
tatsarvaṁ rudramuddiśya dattaṁ syānnātra saṁśayaḥ | ityevaṁ niścayo'gnīnāmanukrānto yathātatham
— all of it is regarded as offered to Rudra alone, of this there is no doubt. Thus this certain truth regarding the fires has been related exactly as it is.
Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.17.44)
nātivistarato viprāḥ pitṛnvakṣyāmyataḥ param | yasmātṣaḍ ṛtavasteṣāṁ sthānaṁ sthānābhimāninām
O brahmins, hereafter I shall speak briefly of the Pitrs, the ancestral manes, for the six seasons themselves are the abode of those Pitrs who preside over that abode.
Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.17.45)
ṛtavaḥ pitarastasmādityeṣā vaidikī śrutiḥ | yuṣmād ṛtuṣu sarve hi jāyante sthāsnujaṅgamāḥ
Hence "the seasons are the Pitrs" — this is the Vedic revelation, for from you, O Pitrs, in the seasons, all creatures both stationary and moving are born.
Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.17.46)
tasmādete hi pitara ārtavā iti ca śrutam | evaṁ pitṝṇāmeteṣāmṛtukālābhimāninām
Therefore these Pitrs are called "Artava", seasonal, so it has been heard. Thus of these Pitrs who preside over the seasonal times —
Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.17.47)
ātmaiśvaryā mahātmānastiṣṭhantīhābhrasaṅgamāt | āgniṣvāttā barhiṣadaḥ pitaro dvividhāḥ smṛtāḥ
These great souls, by their own majesty, dwell here through the gathering of clouds. The Pitrs are described as of two kinds — the Agnishvattas and the Barhishads.
Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.17.48)
ayajvānaśca yajvānaḥ kramātte gṛhamedhinaḥ | svadhā'sūta pitṛbhyaśca dve kanye lokaviśrute
They are, respectively, non-sacrificers and sacrificers among householders. Svadha bore to the Pitrs two daughters renowned throughout the worlds —
Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.17.49)
menāṁ ca dharaṇīṁ caiva yābhyāṁ viśvamidaṁ dhṛtam | agniṣvāttasutā menā dharaṇī barhiṣatsutā

Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.17.50)
menā himavataḥ patnī mainākaṁ krauñcameva ca | gaurīṁ gaṅgāṁ ca suṣuve bhavāṅgāśleṣapāvanīm
Mena, becoming the wife of Himavan, gave birth to Mainaka and Krauncha, and to Gauri and Ganga, she who purifies through the embrace of Shiva's body.
Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.17.51)
merostu dharaṇī patnī divyauṣadhisamanvitam | mandaraṁ suṣuve putraṁ citrisundarakandharam
Dharani, becoming the wife of Meru, gave birth to a son named Mandara, endowed with divine herbs and having a beautifully adorned slope.
Verse 52 (shiva.vayaviya.17.52)
sa eva mandaraḥ śrīmānmeruputrastapobalāt | sākṣācchrīkaṇṭhanāthasya śivasyāvasathaṁ gataḥ
That glorious Mandara, son of Meru, by the power of his austerity, attained the very dwelling place of Shiva, the Lord of the Beautiful Throat.
Verse 53 (shiva.vayaviya.17.53)
sā'sūtā dharaṇī bhūyastisraḥ kanyāśca viśrutāḥ | velāṁ ca niyatiṁ caiva tṛtīyāmapi cāyatim
That same Dharani further gave birth to three renowned daughters — Vela, Niyati, and the third, Ayati.
Verse 54 (shiva.vayaviya.17.54)
āyatirniyatiścaiva patnyau dve bhṛguputrayoḥ | svāyambhuve'ntare pūrvaṁ kathitaste tadanvayaḥ
Ayati and Niyati became the two wives of the two sons of Bhrigu; their lineage, in the Svayambhuva Manvantara, has already been told earlier.
Verse 55 (shiva.vayaviya.17.55)
suṣuve sāgarādvelā kanyāmekāmaninditām | savarṇāṁ nāma sāmudrīṁ patnīṁ prācīnabarhiṣaḥ
Vela, by the ocean, gave birth to one flawless daughter, named Savarna, called Samudri, who became the wife of Prachinabarhi.
Verse 56 (shiva.vayaviya.17.56)
sāmudrī suṣuve putrāndaśa prācīnabarhiṣaḥ | sarve prācetasā nāma dhanurvedasya pāragāḥ
Samudri bore ten sons to Prachinabarhi, all known by the name Prachetasas, and all accomplished masters of the science of archery.
Verse 57 (shiva.vayaviya.17.57)
yeṣāṁ svāyambhuve dakṣaḥ putratvamagamatpurā | triyambakasya śāpena cākṣuṣasyāntare manoḥ
Formerly, in the Svayambhuva Manvantara itself, through the curse of Tryambaka, Shiva, Daksha came to be their son in the Chakshusha Manvantara.
Verse 58 (shiva.vayaviya.17.58)
ityete brahmaputrāṇāṁ dharmādīnāṁ mahātmanām | nātisaṅkṣepato viprā nātivistarataḥ kramāt
O brahmins, thus the lineages of Brahma's sons, Dharma and the other great souls, neither too briefly nor too elaborately, in due order —
Verse 59 (shiva.vayaviya.17.59)
varṇitā vai mayā vaṁśā divyā devagaṇānvitāḥ | kriyāvantaḥ prajāvanto maharddhibhiralaṅkṛtāḥ
— have been described by me: these divine lineages, filled with hosts of gods, active in rites, rich in progeny, and adorned with great prosperity.
Verse 60 (shiva.vayaviya.17.60)
prajānāṁ sanniveśo'yaṁ prajāpatisamudbhavaḥ | na hi śakyaḥ prasaṅkhyātuṁ varṣakoṭiśatairapi
This arrangement of creatures has arisen from the Prajapatis; it cannot be fully enumerated even in hundreds of millions of years.
Verse 61 (shiva.vayaviya.17.61)
rājñāmapi ca yo vaṁśo dvidhā so'pi pravartate | sūryavaṁśaḥ somavaṁśa iti puṇyatamaḥ kṣitau
The lineage of kings, too, proceeds in two branches — the Solar dynasty and the Lunar dynasty — regarded as the most sacred upon the earth.
Verse 62 (shiva.vayaviya.17.62)
ikṣvākurambarīṣaśca yayātirnāhuṣādayaḥ | puṇyaślokāḥ śrutā ye'tra te'pi tadvaṁśasambhavāḥ
Ikshvaku, Ambarisha, Yayati, Nahusha, and others of sacred renown who have been spoken of here, they too were born in those same lineages.
Verse 63 (shiva.vayaviya.17.63)
anye ca rājaṛṣayo nānāvīryasamanvitāḥ | kiṁ taiḥ phalamanutkrāntairuktapūrvaiḥ purātanaiḥ
And there were other royal sages too, endowed with manifold valor. What purpose is served by dwelling on those ancient ones, already mentioned before, now passed away?
Verse 64 (shiva.vayaviya.17.64)
kiṁ ceśvarakathāvṛttau yatra tatrānyakīrtanam | na sadbhiḥ sammataṁ matvā notsahe bahubhāṣitum
And in the course of the Lord's own narrative, to praise other matters here and there is, I consider, not approved by the wise — thinking so, I do not venture to speak at greater length.
Verse 65 (shiva.vayaviya.17.65)
prasaṅgādīśvarasyaiva prabhāvadyotanādapi | sargādayo'pi kathitā ityatra tatpravistaraiḥ
It is only for the sake of illuminating the glory of the Lord himself, in passing, that this account of creation and so forth has been related here in such detail.
