Vayaviya Samhita · Chapter 18
Sati Relinquishes Her Body
Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.18.1)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ | devī dakṣasya tanayā tyaktvā dākṣāyaṇīṁ tanum | kathaṁ himavataḥ putrī menāyāmabhavatpurā
The sages said: How did the goddess, daughter of Daksha, having abandoned her body born of Daksha, come in ancient times to be born as the daughter of Himavan, through Mena, O Maruta?
Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.18.2)
kathaṁ ca nindito rudro dakṣeṇa ca mahātmanā | nimittamapi kiṁ tatra yena syānnindito bhavaḥ
And how was Rudra insulted by the great Daksha? What was the cause behind it, by which Shiva came to be insulted?
Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.18.3)
utpannaśca kathaṁ dakṣo hyabhiśāpādbhavasya tu | cākṣuṣasyāntare pūrvaṁ manoḥ prabrūhi māruta
And how, through Shiva's curse, was Daksha born, in ancient times, in the Chakshusha Manvantara? Tell us this, O Maruta.
Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.18.4)
vāyuruvāva śṛṇvantu kathayiṣyāmi dakṣasya laghucetasaḥ | vṛttaṁ pāpāt pramādācca viśvāmaravidūṣaṇam
Vayu said: Listen, I shall relate the sinful and heedless conduct of the petty-minded Daksha, by which he offended all the immortals of the universe.
Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.18.5)
purā surāsurāḥ sarve siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ | kadācid draṣṭumīśānaṁ himavacchikharaṁ yayuḥ
Formerly, once, all the gods, demons, siddhas, and great sages went to the peak of the Himalaya to behold Ishana.
Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.18.6)
tadā devaśca devī ca divyāsanagatāvubhau | darśanaṁ dadatusteṣāṁ devādīnāṁ dvijottamāḥ
O foremost of the twice-born, then the God and the Goddess, both seated upon a divine throne, gave audience to those gods and others.
Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.18.7)
tadānīmeva dakṣo'pi gatastatra sahāmaraiḥ | jāmātaraṁ haraṁ draṣṭuṁ devīṁ cātmasutāṁ satīm
At that very time Daksha too went there together with the gods, to see his son-in-law Hara and his own daughter, the goddess Sati.
Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.18.8)
tadātmagauravāddevo devyā dakṣe samāgate | devādibhyo viśeṣeṇa na kadācidabhūtsmṛtiḥ
Then, when Daksha arrived, the God, out of his own inherent majesty, never showed him any particular special regard beyond the other gods.
Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.18.9)
tasya tasyāḥ paraṁ bhāvamajñātuścāpi kevalam | putrītyevaṁ vimūḍhasya tasyāṁ vairamajāyata
Not knowing his supreme nature, and thinking of her only as "my daughter" — thus deluded, hostility toward them arose in his heart.
Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.18.10)
tatastenaiva vaireṇa vidhinā ca pracoditaḥ | nājuvāha bhavaṁ dakṣo dīkṣitastāmapi dviṣan
Then, driven by that very hostility and by destiny, Daksha did not honor Bhava; consecrated for his own rite, he came to hold enmity even toward that goddess.
Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.18.11)
anyāñjāmātaraḥ sarvānāhūya sa yathākramam | śataśaḥ puṣkalāmarcāñcakāra ca pṛthak pṛthak
He invited all his other sons-in-law in due order and performed for each of them, separately, abundant honors a hundredfold.
Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.18.12)
tathā tānsaṅgatān śrutvā nāradasya mukhāttadā | yayau rudrāya rudrāṇī vijñāpya bhavanaṁ pituḥ
Then, hearing from the mouth of Narada that they had all gathered, Rudrani, Sati, informed Rudra and set out for her father's mansion.
Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.18.13)
atha sannihitaṁ divyaṁ vimānaṁ viśvatomukham | lakṣaṇāḍhyaṁ sukhārohamatimātraṁ manoharam
Then there appeared, close at hand, a divine celestial chariot, facing every direction, richly endowed with auspicious features, easy to mount, and exceedingly enchanting.
Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.18.14)
taptajāmbūnadaprakhyaṁ citraratnapariṣkṛtam | muktāmayavitānāgnyaṁ sragdāmasamalaṅkṛtam
It shone like refined gold, was adorned with wondrous jewels, had a canopy and finial made of pearls, and was decked with garlands.
Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.18.15)
taptakañcananirvyūhaṁ ratnastambhaśatāvṛtam | vajrakalpitasopānaṁ vidrumastambhatoraṇam
Its framework was of refined gold, it was surrounded by a hundred jeweled pillars, its stairway was fashioned of diamond, and its archway was set with coral pillars.
Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.18.16)
puṣpapaṭṭaparistīrṇaṁ citraratnamahāsanam | vajrajālakiracchidramacchidramaṇikuṭṭimam
It was strewn with sheets of flowers, held a great throne of wondrous jewels, was pierced with lattices of diamond, and its floor was inlaid with flawless gems.
Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.18.17)
maṇidaṇḍamanojñena mahāvṛṣabhalakṣmaṇā | alaṅkṛtapurobhāgamabhraśubhreṇa ketunā
Its front was adorned with a banner, white as the clouds, bearing the emblem of a great bull upon a lovely jeweled staff.
Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.18.18)
ratnakañcukaguptāṅgaiścitravetraikapāṇibhiḥ | adhiṣṭhitamahādvāramapradhṛṣyairgaṇeśvaraiḥ
Its great gateway was guarded by invincible lords of the ganas, their bodies shielded in jeweled armor, each holding a wondrous cane in one hand.
Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.18.19)
mṛdaṅgatālagītādiveṇuvīṇāviśāradaiḥ | vidagdhaveṣabhūṣaiśca bahubhiḥ strījanairvṛtam
It was surrounded by many women, skilled in the mridanga, cymbals, song, flute, and vina, elegantly attired and adorned.
Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.18.20)
āruroha mahādevī saha priyasakhījanaiḥ | cāmāravyajane tasyā vajradaṇḍamanohare
The great Goddess mounted it, together with her beloved companions; her lovely fly-whisks, mounted on diamond handles —
Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.18.21)
gṛhītvā rudrakanye dve vivījaturubhe śubhe | tadā cāmarayormadhye devyā vadanamābabhau
— were taken up by two auspicious daughters of Rudra, who fanned her from both sides; and between the two fly-whisks the Goddess's face shone,
Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.18.22)
anyo'nyaṁ yudhyatormadhye haṁsayoriva paṅkajam | chatraṁ śaśinibhaṁ tasyāścūḍopari sumālinī
like a lotus shining between two swans locked in mutual play. Above her head, an umbrella white as the moon —
Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.18.23)
dhṛtamuktāparikṣiptaṁ babhāra premanirbharā | tacchatramujjvalaṁ devyā ruruce vadanopari
strung about with pearls, held by a companion overflowing with love. That radiant umbrella shone above the Goddess's face,
Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.18.24)
uparyamṛtabhāṇḍasya maṇḍalaṁ śaśino yathā | atha cāgre samāsīnā susmitāsyā śubhāvatī
as though the disc of the moon hovered above a vessel of nectar. Then, seated before her, a gently smiling, auspicious companion —
Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.18.25)
akṣadyūtavinodena ramayāmāsa vai satīm | suyaśāḥ pāduke devyāḥ śubhe ratnapariṣkṛte
entertained Sati with the game of dice. Suyasha took up the Goddess's auspicious jeweled sandals —
Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.18.26)
stanayorantare kṛtvā tadā devīmasevata | anyā kāñcanacārvaṅgī dīptaṁ jagrāha darpaṇam
pressing them to her own breast, thus attending upon the Goddess. Another companion, golden and lovely-limbed, took up a gleaming mirror.
Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.18.27)
aparā tālavṛntaṁ ca parā tāmbūlapeṭikām | kācitkrīḍāśukaṁ cāru kare'kuruta bhāminī
Another held a fan, another a betel-box; one lovely woman took a pet parrot, charming for play, in her hand.
Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.18.28)
kācittu sumanojñāni puṣpāṇi surabhīṇi ca | kācidābharaṇādhāraṁ babhāra kamalekṣaṇā
One held lovely, fragrant flowers; another, lotus-eyed, carried a case of ornaments.
Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.18.29)
kācicca punarālepaṁ suprasūnaṁ śubhāñjanam | anyāśca sadṛśāstāstā yathāsvamucitakriyāḥ
Another held unguents, fine flowers, and auspicious collyrium; and many other companions besides, each engaged in her own fitting task.
Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.18.30)
āvṛtya tāṁ mahādevīmasevanta samantataḥ | atīva śuśubhe tāsāmantare parameśvarī
Encircling the great Goddess on every side, they attended upon her. In their midst, the supreme Goddess shone with exceeding splendor,
Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.18.31)
tārāpariṣado madhye candralekheva śāradī | tataḥ śaṅkhasamutthasya nādasya samanantaram
as the crescent moon of autumn shines amid a company of stars. Then, immediately upon the sounding of the conch —
Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.18.32)
prāsthāniko mahānādaḥ paṭahaḥ samatāḍyata | tato madhuravādyāni saha tālodyataiḥ svanaiḥ
the great departure-drum was struck. Then sweet instruments sounded together with rhythmic beats,
Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.18.33)
anāhatāni sanneduḥ kāhalānāṁ śatāni ca | sāyudhānāṁ gaṇeśānāṁ maheśasamatejasām
and hundreds of untouched war-trumpets resounded, belonging to the weapon-bearing lords of the ganas, radiant as Mahesha himself.
Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.18.34)
sahasrāṇi śatānyaṣṭau tadānīṁ purato yayuḥ | teṣāṁ madhye vṛṣārūḍho gajārūḍho yathā guruḥ
At that time eight hundred thousand ganas went ahead; in their midst, mounted on a bull, one shone as Guru mounted on his elephant.
Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.18.35)
jagāma gaṇapaḥ śrīmān somanandīśvarārcitaḥ | devadundubhayo nedurdivi divyasukhā ghanāḥ
The glorious lord of the ganas, honored by Soma, went forth. In heaven the drums of the gods resounded, and the clouds became a source of celestial delight.
Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.18.36)
nanṛturmunayaḥ sarve mumuduḥ siddhayoginaḥ | sasṛjuḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ ca vitānopari vāridāḥ
All the sages danced, the siddhas and yogis rejoiced, and the clouds rained down flowers upon the canopy.
Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.18.37)
tadā devagaṇaiścānyaiḥ pathi sarvatra saṅgatāḥ | kṣaṇādiva piturgehaṁ praviveśa maheśvarī
Then, joined all along the way by other hosts of gods, Maheshvari entered her father's house in what seemed but an instant.
Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.18.38)
tāṁ dṛṣṭvā kupito dakṣaścātmanaḥ kṣayakāraṇāt | tasyā yavīyasībhyo'pi cakre pūjāmasatkṛtām
Seeing her, Daksha, driven by the very cause of his own ruin, grew enraged, and he accorded her a reception more disrespectful even than that given to her younger sisters.
Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.18.39)
tadā śaśimukhī devī pitaraṁ sadasi sthitam | ambikā yuktamavyagramuvācākṛpaṇaṁ vacaḥ
Then the moon-faced Goddess Ambika spoke to her father, seated in the assembly, words that were fitting, composed, and without timidity.
Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.18.40)
devyuvāca | brahmādayaḥ piśācāntā yasyājñāvaśavartinaḥ | sa devaḥ sāmprataṁ tāta vidhinā nārcitaḥ kila
The Goddess said: O father, that God whose command governs everyone from Brahma down to the pishachas — even he, it seems, has not now been duly honored by you.
Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.18.41)
tadāstāṁ mama jyāyasyāḥ putryāḥ pūjāṁ kimīdṛśīm | asatkṛtāmavajñāya kṛtavānasi garhitam
Then what use is such worship of me, his eldest wife? You have committed a reprehensible act, disrespecting and disregarding me.
Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.18.42)
evamukto'bravīdenāṁ dakṣaḥ krodhādamarṣitaḥ | tvattaḥ śreṣṭhā viśiṣṭāśca pūjyā bālāḥ sutā mama
Thus addressed, Daksha, overcome with fury, said to her: My younger daughters are superior and more distinguished than you; they alone deserve worship.
Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.18.43)
tāsāṁ tu ye ca bharttāraste me bahumatā mudā | guṇaiścāpyadhikāḥ sarve bhartuste tryambakādapi
Their husbands are held by me in high esteem and gladness, and all of them surpass your husband Tryambaka in virtue as well.
Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.18.44)
stabdhātmā tāmasaḥ śarvaḥ tvamimaṁ samupāśritā | tena tvāmavamanye'haṁ pratikūlo hi me bhavaḥ
Sharva is arrogant and dark in nature, and you have taken refuge in him; therefore I hold you in disregard, for Bhava is hostile to me.
Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.18.45)
tathoktā pitaraṁ dakṣaṁ kruddhā devī tamabravīt | śṛṇvatāmeva sarveṣāṁ ye yajñasadasi sthitāḥ
Thus addressed, the enraged Goddess spoke to her father Daksha, in the hearing of all those assembled in the sacrificial hall —
Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.18.46)
akasmānmama bhartāramajātāśeṣadūṣaṇam | vācā dūṣayase dakṣa sākṣāllokamaheśvaram
O Daksha, without any cause you defame with your speech my husband, who is utterly free of any fault, the very Lord and Master of all the worlds.
Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.18.47)
vidyācauro gurudrohī vedeśvaravidūṣakaḥ | ta ete bahupāpmānaḥ sarve daṇḍyā iti śrutiḥ
The thief of knowledge, the betrayer of one's teacher, the reviler of the Lord of the Vedas — all these are great sinners deserving punishment, so declares the Vedic revelation.
Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.18.48)
tasmādatyutkaṭasyāsya pāpasya sadṛśo bhṛśam | sahasā dāruṇo daṇḍastava daivādbhaviṣyati
Therefore, in keeping with this exceedingly heinous sin, a swift and dreadful punishment shall befall you suddenly, by fate.
Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.18.49)
tvayā na pūjito yasmāddevadevastriyambakaḥ | tasmāttava kulaṁ duṣṭaṁ naṣṭamityavadhāraya
Since you have not honored Tryambaka, the God of gods, know for certain that your lineage, corrupted, shall be destroyed.
Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.18.50)
ityuktvā pitaraṁ ruṣṭā satī santyaktasādhvasā | tadīyāṁ ca tanuṁ tyaktvā himavantaṁ yayau girim
Having thus spoken to her father, Sati, enraged and having cast off all fear, abandoned that body of hers and departed toward the mountain Himavan.
Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.18.51)
sa parvataparaḥ śrīmā~llabdhapuṇyaphalodayaḥ | tadarthameva kṛtavān suciraṁ duścaraṁ tapaḥ
That glorious foremost of mountains, Himavan, who had already obtained the fruit of merit, had for this very purpose long performed a most arduous austerity.
Verse 52 (shiva.vayaviya.18.52)
tasmāttamanugṛhṇāti bhūdhareśvaramīśvarī | svecchayā pitaraṁ cakre svātmano yogamāyayā
Therefore the Goddess, by her own will and through her yogic power, favored that lord of mountains and made him, of her own accord, her father.
Verse 53 (shiva.vayaviya.18.53)
yadā gatā satī dakṣaṁ vinindya bhayavihvalam | tadā tirohitā mantrā vihataśca tato'dhvaraḥ
When Sati, having reproached Daksha and left him overwhelmed with fear, departed, then the sacred formulas of that rite vanished, and the sacrifice itself was thwarted.
Verse 54 (shiva.vayaviya.18.54)
tadupaśrutya gamanaṁ devyāstripurumardanaḥ | dakṣāya ca ṛṣibhyaśca cukopa ca śaśāpa tān
Hearing of the Goddess's departure in this manner, the Slayer of Tripura grew furious at Daksha and at those sages, and cursed them.
Verse 55 (shiva.vayaviya.18.55)
yasmādavamatā dakṣamatkṛte'nāgasā satī | pūjitāścetarāḥ sarvāḥ svasutā bhartṛbhiḥ saha
Shiva said: Since, O Daksha, you dishonored the blameless Sati on my account, while all your other daughters, together with their husbands, were duly honored,
Verse 56 (shiva.vayaviya.18.56)
vaivasvate'ntare tasmāttava jāmātarastvamī | utpatsyante samaṁ sarve brahmayajñeṣvayonijāḥ
therefore, in the Vaivasvata Manvantara, all these sons-in-law of yours shall be born equally, without birth from a womb, at Brahma's sacrifices,
Verse 57 (shiva.vayaviya.18.57)
bhavitā mānuṣo rājā cākṣuṣasya tvamanvaye | prācīnabarhiṣaḥ pautraḥ putraścāpi pracetasaḥ
and you yourself shall become a human king in the line of Chakshusha — grandson of Prachinabarhi and son of Prachetas.
Verse 58 (shiva.vayaviya.18.58)
ahaṁ tatrāpi te vighnamācariṣyāmi durmate | dharmārthakāmayukteṣu karmasvapi punaḥ punaḥ
O evil-minded one, even then I shall again and again create obstacles in your undertakings joined with dharma, artha, and kama.
Verse 59 (shiva.vayaviya.18.59)
tenaivaṁ vyāhṛto dakṣo rudreṇāmitatejasā | svāyambhuvīṁ tanuṁ tyaktvā papāta bhuvi duḥkhitaḥ
Thus addressed by Rudra of immeasurable splendor, Daksha, abandoning his Svayambhuva body, fell to the ground grief-stricken and died.
Verse 60 (shiva.vayaviya.18.60)
tataḥ prācetaso dakṣo jajñe vai cākṣuṣe'ntare | prācīnabarhiṣaḥ pautraḥ putraścaiva pracetasām
Thereafter, in the Chakshusha Manvantara, Daksha was born as the grandson of Prachinabarhi and the son of the Prachetasas.
Verse 61 (shiva.vayaviya.18.61)
bhṛgvādayo'pi jātā vai manorvaivasvatasya tu | antare brahmaṇo yajñe vāruṇīṁ bibhratastanum
Bhrigu and the others too were born in the Manvantara of Vaivasvata Manu, at Brahma's sacrifice, assuming bodies born of Varuna.
Verse 62 (shiva.vayaviya.18.62)
tadā dakṣasya dharmārthaṁ pravṛttasya durātmanaḥ | maheśaḥ kṛtavān vighnaṁ manau vaivasvate sati
Then, even as the wicked-souled Daksha engaged in a rite of dharma, in the Vaivasvata Manvantara, Mahesha created an obstacle in it.
