Vayaviya Samhita · Chapter 19
The Birth of Virabhadra
Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.19.1)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ | kathaṁ dakṣasya dharmārthaṁ pravṛttasya durātmanaḥ | maheśaḥ kṛtavān vighnametadicchāma veditum
The sages said: We wish to know how Mahesha created an obstacle for the wicked-souled Daksha even as he engaged in an act of dharma.
Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.19.2)
vāyuruvāca | viśvasya jagato māturapi devyāstapobalāt | pitṛbhāvamupāgamya mudite himavadgirau
Vayu said: Through the power of the austerity of the Goddess, the mother of the whole universe, the mountain Himavan, rejoicing, had come to hold toward her the disposition of a father.
Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.19.3)
deve'pi tatkṛtodvāhe himavacchikharālaye | saṅkrīḍati tayā sārddhaṁ kāle bahutare gate
And the God too, having been married there upon the peak of the Himalaya, continued sporting together with her, even as a great span of time passed.
Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.19.4)
vaivasvate'ntare prāpte dakṣaḥ prācetasaḥ svayam | aśvamedhena yajñena yakṣyamāṇo'nvapadyata
When the Vaivasvata Manvantara arrived, Daksha, son of the Prachetasas, himself resolved to perform a sacrifice, the Ashvamedha.
Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.19.5)
tato himavataḥ pṛṣṭhe dakṣo vai yajñamāharat | gaṅgādvāre śubhe deśe ṛṣisiddhaniṣevite
Then Daksha performed that sacrifice on the flank of the Himalaya, at the auspicious place of Gangadvara, frequented by sages and siddhas.
Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.19.6)
tasya tasminmakhe devāḥ sarve śakrapurogamāḥ | gamanāya samāgamya buddhimāpedire tadā
For that sacrifice of his, all the gods, headed by Indra, gathered together and resolved to go.
Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.19.7)
ādityā vasavo rudrāḥ sādhyāḥ saha marudgaṇaiḥ | ūṣmapāḥ somapāścaiva ājyapā dhūmapāstathā
The Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the Sadhyas together with the hosts of Maruts, the Ushmapas, Somapas, Ajyapas, and Dhumapas —
Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.19.8)
aśvinau pitaraścaiva tathā cānye maharṣayaḥ | viṣṇunā sahitāḥ sarve svāgatā yajñabhāginaḥ
the two Ashvins, the Pitrs, and other great sages — all of these, together with Vishnu, entitled to a share of the offering, were well received there.
Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.19.9)
dṛṣṭvā devakulaṁ sarvamīśvareṇa vinā gatam | dadhīco manyunāviṣṭo dakṣamevamabhāṣata
Seeing the whole assembly of gods gone there without the Lord, Dadhichi, filled with wrath, spoke thus to Daksha —
Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.19.10)
dadhīca uvāca | apyapūjye caiva pūjā pūjyānāṁ cāpyapūjane | naraḥ pāpamavāpnoti mahadvai nātra saṁśayaḥ
Dadhichi said: By worshiping one unworthy of worship, and equally by failing to worship one worthy of worship, a man incurs great sin — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.19.11)
asatāṁ sammatiryatra satāmavamatistathā | daṇḍo devakṛtastatra sadyaḥ patati dāruṇaḥ
Where the unworthy are honored and the worthy are dishonored, there a dreadful punishment ordained by the gods falls at once.
Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.19.12)
evamuktvā tu viprarṣiḥ punardakṣamabhāṣata | pūjyaṁ tu paśubhartāraṁ kasmānnārcayase prabhum
Having said this, that sage among brahmins spoke again to Daksha: Why do you not honor the Lord Pashupati, who is worthy of worship?
Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.19.13)
dakṣa uvāca | santi me bahavo rudrāḥ śūlahastāḥ kapardinaḥ | ekādaśāvasthitā ye nānyaṁ vedmi maheśvaram
Daksha said: I have present here many Rudras, trident-bearing, matted-locked, established as eleven in number; besides these I know no other Maheshvara.
Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.19.14)
dadhīca uvāca | kimebhiramarairanyaiḥ pūjitairadhvare phalam | rājā cedadhvarasyāsya na rudraḥ pūjyate tvayā
Dadhichi said: If Rudra, the king of this sacrifice, is not worshiped by you, what fruit is there in worshiping these other gods at the rite?
Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.19.15)
brahmaviṣṇumaheśānāṁ sraṣṭā yaḥ prabhuravyayaḥ | brahmādayaḥ piśācāntā yasya kaiṅkaryavādinaḥ
He who is the imperishable Lord, the creator even of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesha, he whom all from Brahma down to the pishachas serve as servants —
Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.19.16)
prakṛtīnāṁ paraścaiva puruṣasya ca yaḥ paraḥ | cintyate yogavidvadbhirṛṣibhistattvadarśibhiḥ
he who is beyond Prakriti and beyond Purusha as well, upon whom sages skilled in yoga and seers of truth meditate —
Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.19.17)
akṣaraṁ paramaṁ brahma hyasacca sadasacca yat | anādimadhyanidhanamapratarkyaṁ sanātanam
He is the imperishable supreme Brahman, who is being, non-being, and both together; without beginning, middle, or end; inconceivable and eternal.
Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.19.18)
yaḥ sraṣṭā caiva saṁhartā bhartā caiva maheśvaraḥ | tasmādanyaṁ na paśyāmi śaṅkarātmānamadhvare
He who is the creator, the destroyer, and the sustainer as well — he alone is Maheshvara; I see no other of the nature of Shankara at this sacrifice, apart from him.
Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.19.19)
dakṣa uvāca | etanmakheśasya suvarṇapātre haviḥ samastaṁ vidhimantrapūtam | viṣṇornayāmyapratimasya bhāgaṁ prabhorvibhajyāhavanīyamadya
Daksha said: This entire oblation, purified by the prescribed mantras, lies here in the golden vessel of the lord of the sacrifice; today I offer this oblation, allotting the portion of the peerless Lord Vishnu.
Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.19.20)
dadhīca uvāca | yasmānnārādhito rudraḥ sarvadeveśvareśvaraḥ | tasmāddakṣa tavāśeṣo yajño'yaṁ na bhaviṣyati
Dadhichi said: Since Rudra, the Lord of the lords of all the gods, has not been worshiped, therefore, O Daksha, this sacrifice of yours shall not reach completion.
Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.19.21)
ityuktvā vacanaṁ kruddho dadhīco munisattamaḥ | nirgamya ca tato deśājjagāma svakamāśramam
Having spoken these words, the enraged Dadhichi, foremost among sages, departed from that place and went to his own hermitage.
Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.19.22)
nirgate'pi munau tasmindevā dakṣaṁ na tatyajuḥ | avaśyamanubhāvitvādanarthasya tu bhāvinaḥ
Even after that sage had departed, the gods did not abandon Daksha, since the coming calamity was bound inevitably to be experienced.
Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.19.23)
etasminneva kāle tu jñātvaitatsarvamīśvarāt | dagdhuṁ dakṣādhvaraṁ viprā devī devamacodayat
O brahmins, at this very time, having learned all this from the Lord, the Goddess urged the God to burn up Daksha's sacrifice.
Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.19.24)
devyā sañcodito devo dakṣādhvarajighāṁsayā | sasarja sahasā vīraṁ vīrabhadraṁ gaṇeśvaram
Urged by the Goddess, desiring to destroy Daksha's sacrifice, the God at once brought forth the hero Virabhadra, lord of the ganas.
Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.19.25)
sahasravadanaṁ devaṁ sahasrakamalekṣaṇam | sahasramudgaradharaṁ sahasraśarapāṇikam
A god with a thousand faces, a thousand lotus eyes, bearing a thousand maces, holding a thousand arrows in hand.
Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.19.26)
śūlaṭaṅkagadāhastaṁ dīptakārmukadhāriṇam | cakravajradharaṁ ghoraṁ candrārddhakṛtaśekharam
Holding trident, chisel-axe, and mace, bearing a blazing bow, wielding discus and thunderbolt, terrifying, and crowned with a crescent moon.
Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.19.27)
kuliśodyotitakaraṁ taḍijjvalitamūrddhajam | daṁṣṭrākarālaṁ bibhrāṇaṁ mahāvaktraṁ mahodaram
His hand gleamed with the thunderbolt, his hair blazed like lightning; he bore terrifying fangs, and had a vast face and vast belly.
Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.19.28)
vidyujjihvaṁ pralamboṣṭhaṁ meghasāgaraniḥsvanam | vasānaṁ carma vaiyāghraṁ mahadrudhiranisravam
His tongue was like lightning, his lips hung heavy, his roar was like the ocean and the thundercloud; he wore a tiger's hide, from which thick blood dripped.
Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.19.29)
gaṇḍadvitayasaṁsṛṣṭamaṇḍalīkṛtakuṇḍalam | varāmaraśiromālāvalīkalitaśekharam
Round earrings touched both his cheeks, and his crown was fashioned from a garland of the heads of excellent gods.
Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.19.30)
raṇannūpurakeyūramahākanakabhūṣitam | ratnasañcayasandīptaṁ tārahārāvṛtorasam
He was adorned with jingling anklets and armlets and great golden ornaments, blazing with masses of jewels, his chest covered with gleaming necklaces.
Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.19.31)
mahāśarabhaśārdūlasiṁhaiḥ sadṛśavikramam | praśastamattamātaṅgasamānagamanālasam
His valor was equal to the great Sharabha, the tiger, and the lion; his gait, majestic and languid, resembled that of a proud rutting elephant.
Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.19.32)
śaṅkhacāmarakundendumṛṇālasadṛśaprabham | satuṣāramivādrīndraṁ sākṣājjaṅgamatāṁ gatam
His radiance was white as the conch, the fly-whisk, the jasmine, the moon, and the lotus-stalk — as though the snow-clad king of mountains had come alive and taken to motion.
Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.19.33)
jvālāmālāparikṣiptaṁ dīptamauktikabhūṣaṇam | tejasā caiva dīvyantaṁ yugānta iva pāvakam
He was encircled by a garland of flames, decked with dazzling pearl ornaments, and blazed with splendor like the fire of the world's dissolution.
Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.19.34)
sa jānubhyāṁ mahīṁ gatvā praṇataḥ prāñjalistataḥ | pārśvato devadevasya paryatiṣṭhad gaṇeśvaraḥ
That lord of the ganas, touching the earth with both knees, bowed down; then, with joined palms, he stood beside the God of gods.
Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.19.35)
manyunā cāsṛjadbhadrāṁ bhadrakālīṁ maheśvarīm | ātmanaḥ karmasākṣitve tena gantuṁ sahaiva tu
And from her own wrath the Goddess brought forth the auspicious Bhadrakali, the great Maheshvari, so that, as witness to this deed, she might go together with him.
Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.19.36)
taṁ dṛṣṭvāvasthitaṁ vīrabhadraṁ kālāgnisannibham | bhadrayā sahitaṁ prāha bhadramastviti śaṅkaraḥ
Seeing Virabhadra, resplendent as the fire of doomsday, standing there together with Bhadra, Shankara said: May good fortune be yours.
Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.19.37)
sa ca vijñāpayāmāsa saha devyā maheśvaram | ājñāpaya mahādeva kiṁ kāryaṁ karavāṇyaham
Together with the Goddess, he petitioned the Great Lord: O Mahadeva, command me — what task shall I perform?
Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.19.38)
tatastripurahā prāha haimavatyāḥ priyecchayā | vīrabhadraṁ mahābāhuṁ vācā vipulanādayā
Then the slayer of Tripura, out of desire to please Haimavati, spoke to the mighty-armed Virabhadra in a deep, resounding voice —
Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.19.39)
mahādeva uvāca | prācetasasya dakṣasya yajñaṁ sadyo vināśaya | bhadrakālyā sahāsi tvametatkṛtyaṁ gaṇeśvara
Mahadeva said: Destroy at once the sacrifice of Daksha, son of Prachetas. O lord of the ganas, accomplish this task together with Bhadrakali.
Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.19.40)
ahamapyanayā sārddhaṁ raibhyāśramasapīpataḥ | sthitvā vīkṣe gaṇeśāna vikramaṁ tava duḥsaham
O lord of the ganas, I too, together with her, shall remain near the hermitage of Raibhya and watch your unbearable might.
Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.19.41)
vṛkṣāḥ kanakhale ye tu gaṅgādvārasamīpagāḥ | suvarṇaśṛṅgasya girermerumandarasannibhāḥ
The trees at Kanakhala, near Gangadvara, on the golden-peaked mountain, resembling Meru and Mandara —
Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.19.42)
tasminpradeśe dakṣasya yujñaḥ samprati vartate | sahasā tasya yajñasya vighātaṁ kuru mā ciram
— it is in that region that Daksha's sacrifice is now taking place; without delay, at once, wreak destruction upon that sacrifice.
Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.19.43)
ityukte sati devena devī himagirīndrajā | bhadraṁ bhadrāṁ ca samprekṣya vatsaṁ dhenurivaurasam
When the God had thus spoken, the Goddess, daughter of the lord of the Himalayan mountains, looked upon Bhadra and Bhadra, as a cow looks upon her own calf,
Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.19.44)
āliṅgya ca samāghrāya mūrdhni ṣaḍvadanaṁ yathā | sasmitā vacanaṁ prāha madhuraṁ madhuraṁ svayam
and, embracing him and smelling the crown of his head, just as she does with the six-faced one, spoke herself, smiling, in the sweetest of words —
Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.19.45)
devyuvāca | vatsa bhadra mahābhāga mahābalaparākrama | matpriyārthaṁ tvamutpanno mama manyuṁ pramārjaya
The Goddess said: O child Bhadra, most fortunate one, of great strength and valor, you were born for my beloved's sake; assuage my wrath.
Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.19.46)
yajñeśvaramanāhūya yajñakarmarato'bhavat | dakṣaṁ vaireṇa taṁ tasmādbhindhi yajñaṁ gaṇeśvara
O lord of the ganas, that Daksha, hostile in spirit, engaged in the sacrificial rite without inviting the Lord of the sacrifice — shatter that sacrifice of his.
Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.19.47)
yajñalakṣmīmalakṣmīṁ tvaṁ bhadra kṛtvā mamājñayā | yajamānaṁ ca taṁ hatvā vatsa hiṁsaya bhadrayā
O Bhadra, by my command turn the glory of the sacrifice into ill fortune, and slaying that sacrificer, O child, wreak destruction together with Bhadra.
Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.19.48)
aśeṣāmiva tāmājñāṁ śivayościtrakṛtyayoḥ | mūrdhni kṛtvā namaskṛtya bhadro gantuṁ pracakrame
Bearing that command of Shiva and the Goddess, both engaged in this wondrous task, as though placed upon his own head, and offering homage, Bhadra set out to depart.
Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.19.49)
athaiṣa bhagavānkruddhaḥ pretāvāsakṛtālayaḥ | vīrabhadro mahādevo devyā manyupramārjakaḥ
Then this wrathful lord Virabhadra, who has made the abode of ghosts his own dwelling, a great god who assuages the Goddess's fury —
Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.19.50)
sasarja romakūpebhyo romajākhyān gaṇeśvarān | dakṣiṇādbhujadeśāttu śatakoṭigaṇeśvarān
— brought forth from his hair-pores gana-lords called Romajas, and from the region of his right arm, hundreds of millions of gana-lords.
Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.19.51)
pādāttathorudeśācca pṛṣṭhātpārśvānmukhādgalāt | guhyād gulphācchiromadhyātkaṇṭhādāsyāttathodarāt
Gana-lords were born from his foot, his thigh, his back, his side, his face, his throat, his secret parts, his ankle, the crown of his head, his neck, his mouth, and his belly as well.
Verse 52 (shiva.vayaviya.19.52)
tadā gaṇeśvarairbhadrairbhadratulyaparākramaiḥ | sañchāditamabhūtsarvaṁ sākāśavivaraṁ jagat
Then, with these auspicious gana-lords of valor equal to Bhadra himself, the entire world, along with the reaches of the sky, became completely covered.
Verse 53 (shiva.vayaviya.19.53)
sarve sahasrahastāste sahasrāyudhapāṇayaḥ | rudrasyānucarāḥ sarve sarve rudrasamaprabhāḥ
All of them had a thousand arms, holding a thousand weapons in their hands; all were followers of Rudra, and all were of splendor equal to Rudra.
Verse 54 (shiva.vayaviya.19.54)
śūlaśaktigadāhastāṣṭaṅkopalaśilādharāḥ | kālāgnirudrasadṛśāstrinetrāśca jaṭādharāḥ
Bearing in their hands trident, spear, mace, chisel, and boulders of stone, resembling Kalagni Rudra, three-eyed, and matted-locked.
Verse 55 (shiva.vayaviya.19.55)
nipeturbhṛśamākāśe śataśaḥ siṁhavāhanāḥ | vineduśca mahānādāñjaladā iva bhadrajāḥ
Hundreds of them, mounted upon lions, poured suddenly into the sky, and those offspring of Bhadra roared with a great sound, like storm-clouds.
Verse 56 (shiva.vayaviya.19.56)
tairbhadrairbhagavān bhadrastathā parivṛto babhau | kālānalaśatairyukto yathānte kālabhairavaḥ
Surrounded by these auspicious hosts, the lord Bhadra shone forth like Kalabhairava at the world's end, accompanied by hundreds of fires of doom.
Verse 57 (shiva.vayaviya.19.57)
teṣāṁ madhye samāruhya vṛṣendraṁ vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ | jagāma bhagavān bhadraḥ śubhramabhraṁ yathā bhavaḥ
Mounting the foremost of bulls amidst them, the bull-bannered lord Bhadra proceeded forth, as though Bhava himself rode upon a white cloud.
Verse 58 (shiva.vayaviya.19.58)
tasminvṛṣabhamārūḍhe bhadre tu bhasitaprabhaḥ | babhāra mauktikaṁ chatraṁ gṛhītasitacāmaraḥ
Beside that Bhadra mounted upon the bull, one radiant as sacred ash held a pearl-studded umbrella, a white fly-whisk in hand.
Verse 59 (shiva.vayaviya.19.59)
sa tadā śuśubhe pārśve bhadrasya bhasitaprabhaḥ | bhagavāniva śailendraḥ pārśve viśvajagadguroḥ
That ash-radiant one shone then beside Bhadra, as the lord, king of mountains, shines beside the guru of the whole universe.
Verse 60 (shiva.vayaviya.19.60)
so'pi tena babhau bhadraḥ śvetacāmarapāṇinā | bālasomena saumyena yathā śūlavarāyudhaḥ
And by that one, white fly-whisk in hand, Bhadra himself shone as the wielder of the excellent trident shines, gentle as the crescent moon.
Verse 61 (shiva.vayaviya.19.61)
dadhmau śaṅkhaṁ sitaṁ bhadraṁ bhadrasya purataḥ śubham | bhānukampo mahātejā hemaratnairalaṅkṛtaḥ
The greatly radiant one named Bhanukampa, adorned with gold and jewels, blew the auspicious white conch before Bhadra.
Verse 62 (shiva.vayaviya.19.62)
devadundubhayo nedurdivyasaṅkulaniḥsvanāḥ | vavṛṣuḥ śataśo mūrdhni puṣpavarṣaṁ balāhakāḥ
The divine drums of the gods resounded with tumultuous celestial sounds, and clouds rained flowers upon their heads a hundredfold.
Verse 63 (shiva.vayaviya.19.63)
phullānāṁ madhugarbhāṇāṁ puṣpāṇāṁ gandhabandhavaḥ | mārgānukūlasaṁvāhā vavuśca pathi mārutāḥ
Winds, bearing the fragrance of blossoming, honey-filled flowers, blew favorably along the path, carrying that scent all the way.
Verse 64 (shiva.vayaviya.19.64)
tato gaṇeśvarāḥ sarve mattā yuddhabaloddhatāḥ | nanṛturmumudurnedurjahasurjagadurjaguḥ
Then all the lords of the ganas, intoxicated and elated with the strength for battle, danced, rejoiced, roared, laughed, cried out, and sang.
Verse 65 (shiva.vayaviya.19.65)
tadā bhadragaṇāntaḥstho babhau bhadraḥ sabhadrayā | yathā rudragaṇāntaḥ sthastryambako'mbikayā saha
Then Bhadra, standing amid the hosts of Bhadras, together with Bhadra, Bhadrakali, shone forth as Tryambaka shines amid the hosts of Rudras, together with Ambika.
Verse 66 (shiva.vayaviya.19.66)
tatkṣaṇādeva dakṣasya yajñavāṭaṁ hiraṇmayam | praviveśa mahābāhurvīrabhadro mahānugaḥ
In that very instant, the mighty-armed Virabhadra, with his vast host of followers, entered Daksha's golden sacrificial enclosure.
Verse 67 (shiva.vayaviya.19.67)
tatastu dakṣapratipāditasya kratupradhānasya gaṇapradhānaḥ | prayogabhūmiṁ praviveśa bhadro rudro yathānte bhuvanaṁ didhakṣuḥ
Then Bhadra, chief of the ganas, entered the ritual ground of that great sacrifice conducted by Daksha, just as Rudra, at the end of time, enters the world desiring to consume it in flame.
