Vayaviya Samhita · Chapter 22
The Destruction of Daksha's Sacrifice
Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.22.1)
vāyuruvāca tasminnavasare vyomni samāvirabhavadrathaḥ | sahasrasūryasaṅkāśaścārucīravṛṣadhvajaḥ
Vayu said: At that very moment, a chariot appeared in the sky, blazing like a thousand suns, adorned with beautiful trappings and bearing the banner of the bull.
Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.22.2)
aśvaratnadvayodāro rathacakracatuṣṭayaḥ | sañcitānekadivyāstraśastraratnapariṣkṛtaḥ
It was drawn by two peerless, jewel-like horses, had four wheels, and was adorned with a store of many divine weapons, arms, and jewels.
Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.22.3)
tasyāpi rathavaryasyāsītsa eva hi sārathiḥ | yaścaiva traipure yuddhe pūrvaṁ śārvarathe sthitaḥ
The charioteer of that excellent chariot was none other than the one who, in ancient times, had stood upon Sharva's own chariot in the war against Tripura.
Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.22.4)
sa taṁ rathavaraṁ brahmā śāsanādeva śūlinaḥ | hareḥ samīpamānīya kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata
By the very command of the trident-bearer, Brahma himself brought that excellent chariot to Hari, Virabhadra, and, with joined palms, spoke thus —
Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.22.5)
bhagavan bhadra bhadrāṅga bhagavānindubhūṣaṇaḥ | ājñāpayati vīrastvāṁ rathamāroḍhumavyayaḥ
O lord Bhadra, of auspicious form, the imperishable Lord, adorned with the crescent moon, commands you, the hero, to mount this chariot.
Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.22.6)
raibhyāśramasamīpasthastryambako'mbikayā saha | sampaśyate mahābāho dussahaṁ te parākramam
O mighty-armed one, Tryambaka, stationed near the hermitage of Raibhya, together with Ambika, watches your unbearable valor.
Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.22.7)
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā sa vīro gaṇakuñjaraḥ | āruroha rathaṁ divyamanugṛhya pitāmaham
Hearing his words, that hero, foremost of the ganas like a lordly elephant, graciously favored the Grandsire and mounted that divine chariot.
Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.22.8)
tathā rathavare tasmin sthite brahmaṇi sārathau | bhadrasya vavṛdhe lakṣmī rudrasyeva puradviṣaḥ
With Brahma stationed thus as charioteer upon that excellent chariot, Bhadra's own splendor increased, as had that of Rudra, the foe of Tripura.
Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.22.9)
tataḥ śaṅkhavaraṁ dīptaṁ pūrṇacandrasamaprabham | pradadhmau vadane kṛtvā bhānukampo mahābalaḥ
Then the mighty Bhanukampa took to his lips that excellent, blazing conch, radiant as the full moon, and blew it.
Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.22.10)
tasya śaṅkhasya taṁ nādaṁ bhinnasāgarasannibham | śrutvā bhayena devānāṁ jajvāla jaṭharānalaḥ
Hearing that sound of the conch, resembling a bursting ocean, the very fire in the bellies of the gods blazed up from fear.
Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.22.11)
yakṣavidyādharāhīndraiḥ siddhairyuddhadidṛkṣubhiḥ | kṣaṇena nibiḍībhūtāḥ sākāśavivarā diśaḥ
Filled with yakshas, vidyadharas, lords of serpents, and siddhas eager to watch the battle, all the quarters, along with the reaches of the sky, grew dense in an instant.
Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.22.12)
tataḥ śārṅgeṇa cāpāṅkātsa nārāyaṇanīradaḥ | mahatā bāṇavarṣeṇa tutoda gaṇagovṛṣam
Then Narayana, cloud-like, with his bow Sharnga, tormented that bull among the ganas with a mighty rain of arrows.
Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.22.13)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā viṣṇumāyāntaṁ śatadhā bāṇavarṣiṇam | sa cādade dhanurjaitraṁ bhadro bāṇasahasramuk
Seeing Vishnu advancing, raining down arrows a hundredfold, Bhadra too took up his own victorious bow, capable of loosing a thousand shafts.
Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.22.14)
samādāya ca taddivyaṁ dhanuḥ samarabhairavam | śanairvisphārayāmāsa meruṁ dhanuriveśvaraḥ
Taking up that divine bow, terrifying in battle, he slowly drew it back, as the Lord draws Meru itself, as though it were a bow.
Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.22.15)
tasya visphāryyamāṇasya dhanuṣo'bhūnmahāsvanaḥ | tena svanena mahatā pṛthivīṁ samakampayat
As his bow was drawn, a tremendous sound arose, and by that great sound the earth was made to tremble.
Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.22.16)
tataḥ śaravaraṁ ghoraṁ dīptamāśīviṣopamam | jagrāha gaṇapaḥ śrīmānsvayamugraparākramaḥ
Then the glorious lord of the ganas, of fierce valor, himself took up a terrible, blazing arrow, like a venomous serpent.
Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.22.17)
bāṇoddhāre bhujo hyasya tūṇīvadanasaṅgataḥ | pratyadṛśyata valmīkaṁ vivekṣuriva pannagaḥ
As his arm reached to draw out the arrow, joined to the mouth of the quiver, it appeared like a serpent about to enter its anthill.
Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.22.18)
samuddhṛtaḥ kare tasya tatkṣaṇaṁ ruruce śaraḥ | mahābhujaṅgasandaṣṭo yathā bālabhujaṅgamaḥ
The arrow, lifted up in his hand, shone in that instant like a young serpent seized in the jaws of a great one.
Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.22.19)
śareṇa ghanatīvreṇa bhadro rudraparākramaḥ | vivyādha kupito gāḍhaṁ lalāṭe viṣṇumavyayam
Bhadra, of Rudra-like valor, enraged, struck the imperishable Vishnu a deep blow upon the forehead with that dense, sharp arrow.
Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.22.20)
lalāṭe'bhihato viṣṇuḥ pūrvamevāvamānitaḥ | cukopa gaṇapendrāya mṛgendrāyeva govṛṣaḥ
Vishnu, already dishonored, now struck upon the forehead, grew enraged at that lord of the ganas, as a bull grows enraged at a lion.
Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.22.21)
tatastvaśanikalpena krūrāsyena maheṣuṇā | vivyādha gaṇarājasya bhuje bhujagasannibhe
Then, with a mighty shaft, terrible-faced and like a thunderbolt, he struck the king of the ganas on his arm, serpent-like in form.
Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.22.22)
so'pi tasya bhuje bhūyaḥ sūryāyutasamaprabham | visasarja śaraṁ vegādvīrabhadro mahābalaḥ
The mighty Virabhadra, too, once more loosed at his arm, with great force, an arrow radiant as ten thousand suns.
Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.22.23)
sa ca viṣṇuḥ punarbhadraṁ bhadro viṣṇuṁ tathā punaḥ | sa ca taṁ ca sa taṁ viprāḥ śaraistāvanujaghnatuḥ
O brahmins, Vishnu struck Bhadra again, and Bhadra struck Vishnu again; thus the two of them, again and again, assailed each other with arrows.
Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.22.24)
tayoḥ parasparaṁ vegāccharānāśu vimuñcatoḥ | dvayoḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ tumulaṁ romaharṣaṇam
As the two of them, with tremendous speed, rapidly loosed their arrows at each other, a tumultuous, hair-raising battle broke out between them.
Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.22.25)
taddṛṣṭvā tumulaṁ yuddhaṁ tayoreva parasparam | hāhākāro mahānāsīdākāśe khecareritaḥ
Beholding that tumultuous mutual combat, a great cry of dismay arose among those who roamed the sky.
Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.22.26)
tatastvanalatuṇḍena śareṇādityavarcasā | vivyādha sudṛḍhaṁ bhadraṁ viṣṇormahati vakṣasi
Then Vishnu, with a fire-tipped arrow, radiant as the sun, struck a deep blow upon the vast, sturdy chest of Bhadra.
Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.22.27)
sa tu tīvraprapātena śareṇa dṛḍhamāhataḥ | mahatīṁ rujamāsādya nipapāta vimohitaḥ
Struck hard by that arrow falling with tremendous force, he, overcome by intense pain, fell down unconscious.
Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.22.28)
punaḥ kṣaṇādivotthāya labdhasaṁjñastadā hariḥ | sarvāṇyapi ca divyāstrāṇyathainaṁ pratyavāsṛjat
In but a moment, rising again and regaining consciousness, Hari then unleashed against him all his divine weapons.
Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.22.29)
sa ca viṣṇurdhanurmuktānsarvān śarvacamūpatiḥ | sahasā vārayāmāsa ghoraiḥ pratiśaraiḥ śarān
And Bhadra, the commander of Sharva's host, instantly warded off all the arrows loosed from Vishnu's bow, with terrible counter-arrows.
Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.22.30)
tato viṣṇuḥ svanāmāṅkaṁ bāṇamavyāhataṁ kvacit | sasarja krodharaktākṣaḥ tamuddiśya gaṇeśvaram | taṁ bāṇaṁ bāṇavaryeṇa bhadro bhadrāhvayeṇa tu
Then Vishnu, his eyes red with fury, loosed toward that lord of the ganas an arrow inscribed with his own name, one nowhere thwarted. Bhadra, with his own excellent arrow named "Bhadra" —
Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.22.31)
aprāptameva bhagavān ciccheda śatadhā pathi | athaikeneṣuṇā śārṅgaṁ dvābhyāṁ pakṣau garutmataḥ
— that lord cut it into a hundred pieces mid-flight, before it could even reach him. Then, with a single arrow he severed the bow Sharnga, and with two arrows the two wings of Garuda —
Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.22.32)
nimeṣādeva ciccheda tadadbhutamivābhavat | tato yogabalādviṣṇurdehāddevān sudāruṇān
— cut them off in the blink of an eye, an act that seemed wondrous indeed. Then Vishnu, by his yogic power, brought forth from his own body most terrible gods —
Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.22.33)
śaṅkhacakragadāhastān visasarja sahasraśaḥ | sarvāṁstānkṣaṇamātreṇa traipurāniva śaṅkaraḥ
— bearing conch, discus, and mace, in the thousands. That mighty-armed one burned them all in an instant with the fire born from his eye, just as Shankara had once burned the denizens of Tripura.
Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.22.34)
nirdadāha mahābāhurnetrasṛṣṭena vahninā | tataḥ kruddhataro viṣṇuścakramudyamya satvaraḥ
Then Vishnu, more furious still, swiftly raised his discus —
Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.22.35)
tasminvīre samutsraṣṭuṁ tadānīmudyato'bhavat | taṁ dṛṣṭvā cakramudyamya purataḥ samupasthitam
— and was then ready to hurl it at that hero. Seeing him, discus raised, standing right before him,
Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.22.36)
smayanniva gaṇeśāno vyaṣṭambhayadayatnataḥ | stambhitāṅgastu taccakraṁ ghoramapratimaṁ kvacit
the lord of the ganas, as though smiling, without any effort, paralyzed him — body, discus, and all. That terrible, unmatched discus —
Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.22.37)
icchannapi samutsraṣṭuṁ na viṣṇurabhavatkṣamaḥ | śvasannivaikamuddhṛtya bāhuṁ cakrasamanvitam
— even though Vishnu wished to hurl it, he was unable. Having raised one arm, discus and all, as though breathing hard,
Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.22.38)
atiṣṭhadalaso bhūtvā pāṣāṇāmiva niścalaḥ | viśarīro yathā jīvo viśṛṅgo vā yathā vṛṣaḥ
he stood there, drained of energy, as motionless as a stone — like a soul without a body, or a bull without its horns.
Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.22.39)
vidaṁṣṭraśca yathā siṁhastathā viṣṇuravasthitaḥ | taṁ dṛṣṭvā durdaśāpannaṁ viṣṇumindrādayaḥ surāḥ | samunnaddhā gaṇendreṇa mṛgendreṇeva govṛṣāḥ
Vishnu stood there like a lion stripped of its fangs. Seeing Vishnu reduced to such a plight, the gods headed by Indra, roused to fury against the lord of the ganas, like bulls roused against a lion —
Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.22.40)
pragṛhītāyudhā yauddhuṁ kruddhāḥ samupatasthire | tāndṛṣṭvā samare bhadraḥ kṣudrāniva harirmṛgān
— took up their weapons and, enraged, stood ready for battle. Seeing them on the field, Bhadra, as a lion regards paltry deer,
Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.22.41)
sākṣād rudratanurvīro varavīragaṇāvṛtaḥ | aṭṭahāsena ghoreṇa vyaṣṭambhayadaninditaḥ
— that flawless hero, the very body of Rudra himself, surrounded by his excellent host of heroes, paralyzed them with a single terrible burst of laughter.
Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.22.42)
tathā śatamakhasyāpi savajro dakṣiṇaḥ karaḥ | sisṛkṣoreva udvajraścitrīkṛta ivābhavat
In the same way, even Indra's own right hand, holding the thunderbolt, ready to be hurled, became as though frozen into a painted image.
Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.22.43)
anyeṣāmapi sarveṣāṁ saraktā api bāhavaḥ | alasānāmivārambhāstādṛśāḥ pratiyāntyuta
The arms of all the other gods too, red though they were with fury, remained just so, arrested, like the undertakings of the indolent that never proceed.
Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.22.44)
evaṁ bhagavatā tena vyāhatāśeṣavaibhavāt | amarāḥ samare tasya purataḥ sthātumakṣamāḥ
Thus, their entire majesty having been thwarted by that lord, the immortals became unable even to stand before him in battle.
Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.22.45)
stabdhairavayavaireva dudruvurbhayavihvalāḥ | sthitiṁ ca cakrire yuddhe vīratejo'bhayākulāḥ
With their very limbs frozen stiff, they fled in helpless terror, and, overwhelmed by fear of that hero's splendor, remained rooted where they stood on the battlefield.
Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.22.46)
vidrutāṁstridaśānvīrānvīrabhadro mahābhujaḥ | vivyādha niśitairbāṇaiermegho varṣairivācalān
The mighty-armed Virabhadra pierced those fleeing heroic gods with sharp arrows, just as a raincloud pierces mountains with its torrents.
Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.22.47)
bahavastasya vīrasya bāhavaḥ parighopamāḥ | śastraiścakāśire dīptaiḥ sāgnijvālā ivoragāḥ
That hero's many arms, massive as iron bars, blazed with gleaming weapons, like serpents wreathed in flame.
Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.22.48)
astraśastrāṇyanekāni sa vīro visṛjanbabhau | visṛjansarvabhūtāni yathādau viśvasambhavaḥ
That hero, loosing his many weapons, shone forth like the creator of the universe at the beginning, bringing forth all creatures.
Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.22.49)
yathā raśmibhirādityaḥ pracchādayati medinīm | tathā vīraḥ kṣaṇādeva śaraiḥ prācchādayaddiśaḥ
As the sun covers the earth with his rays, so did that hero, in but an instant, cover all the directions with his arrows.
Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.22.50)
khamaṇḍale gaṇendrasya śarāḥ kanakabhūṣitāḥ | utpatantastaḍidrūpairupamānapadaṁ yayuḥ
The gold-adorned arrows of that lord of the ganas, soaring through the vault of the sky, came to resemble streaks of lightning.
Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.22.51)
mahāntaste suragaṇān maṇḍūkāniva ḍuṇḍubhāḥ | prāṇairviyojayāmāsuḥ papuśca rudhirāsavam
Those mighty arrows severed the hosts of gods from their very lives, as great water-serpents devour frogs, and drank up their blood as though it were wine.
Verse 52 (shiva.vayaviya.22.52)
nikṛttabāhavaḥ kecitkecillūnavarānanāḥ | pārśve vidāritāḥ kecinnipeturamarā bhuvi
Some gods, their arms severed, some their fine faces cut off, and some ripped open at the flank, fell to the earth.
Verse 53 (shiva.vayaviya.22.53)
viśikhonmathitairgātrairbahubhiśchinnasandhibhiḥ | vivṛttanayanāḥ kecinnipeturbhūtale mṛtāḥ | gāṁ praveṣṭumivecchantaḥ khaṁ gantumiva lipsavaḥ
Some, their bodies mangled by shafts, their limbs severed at many joints, their eyes rolled back, fell dead upon the earth, as though wishing to enter the ground, or as though desiring to fly off into the sky.
Verse 54 (shiva.vayaviya.22.54)
alabdhātmanirodhānāṁ vyalīyantaḥ parasparam | bhūmau kecitpraviviśuḥ parvatānāṁ guhāḥ pare
Those unable to restrain themselves melted away, one into another; some sank into the earth, others plunged into the caves of the mountains.
Verse 55 (shiva.vayaviya.22.55)
apare jagmurākāśaṁ pare ca viviśurjalam | tathā sañchinnasarvāṅgaiḥ sa vīrastridaśairbabhau
Some fled into the sky, others plunged into the waters; thus that hero shone forth, surrounded by gods whose every limb had been hacked apart.
Verse 56 (shiva.vayaviya.22.56)
parigrastaḥ prajāvargo bhagavāniva bhairavaḥ | dagdhatripurasaṁvyūhastripurāriryathā'bhavat
Devouring that multitude of beings thus, the lord became like Bhairava himself, just as Tripurari had become, when he had burned the whole array of Tripura.
Verse 57 (shiva.vayaviya.22.57)
evaṁ devabalaṁ sarvaṁ dīnaṁ bībhatsadarśanam | gaṇeśvarasamutpannaṁ kṛpaṇaṁ vapurādade
Thus, at the hands of the lord of the ganas, the entire army of the gods took on a wretched, gruesome, pitiable form.
Verse 58 (shiva.vayaviya.22.58)
tadā tridaśavīrāṇāmasṛksalilavāhinī | prāvartata nadī ghorā prāṇināṁ bhayaśaṁsinī
Then a terrible river, flowing with the blood of the heroic gods, began to course, striking terror into all living beings.
Verse 59 (shiva.vayaviya.22.59)
rudhireṇa pariklinnā yajñabhūmistadā babhau | raktārdravasanā śyāmā hataśumbheva kaiśikī
The sacrificial ground, drenched with blood, then appeared like the dark goddess Kaushiki, her garments soaked red, after the slaying of Shumbha.
Verse 60 (shiva.vayaviya.22.60)
tasminmahati saṁvṛtte samare bhṛśadāruṇe | bhayeneva paritrastā pracacāla vasundharā
As that great and utterly dreadful battle raged, the earth trembled, as if seized with fear.
Verse 61 (shiva.vayaviya.22.61)
mahormikalilāvartaścukṣubhe ca mahodadhiḥ | petuścolkā mahotpātāḥ śākhāśca mumucurdrumāḥ
The great ocean, thick with mighty waves and whirlpools, was thrown into turmoil; meteors fell as great portents, and trees shed their very branches.
Verse 62 (shiva.vayaviya.22.62)
aprasannā diśaḥ sarvāḥ pavanaścāśivo vavau | aho vidhiviparyāsastvaśvamedho'yamadhvaraḥ | yajamānaḥ svayaṁ dakṣau brahmaputraprajāpatiḥ
All the quarters grew inauspicious, and an ill wind blew. "Alas! What a reversal of proper order — this is the Ashvamedha sacrifice, its own sacrificer is Daksha, Prajapati, son of Brahma himself,
Verse 63 (shiva.vayaviya.22.63)
dharmādayaḥ sadasyāśca rakṣato garuḍadhvajaḥ | bhāgāṁśca pratigṛhṇanti sākṣādindrādayaḥ surāḥ
Dharma and the others are its assembly members, the garuda-bannered one, Vishnu, is himself its protector, and Indra and the other gods are its very partakers —
Verse 64 (shiva.vayaviya.22.64)
tathāpi yajamānasya yajñasya ca sahartvijaḥ | sadya eva śiraśchedaḥ sādhu sampadyate phalam
— yet the immediate beheading of the sacrificer, of the sacrifice itself, and of its officiating priests together, has become its very fitting result!"
Verse 65 (shiva.vayaviya.22.65)
tasmānnāvedanirdiṣṭaṁ na ceśvarabahiṣkṛtam | nāsatparigṛhītaṁ ca karma kuryātkadācana
Therefore one should never perform any rite that is not enjoined by the Veda, that excludes the Lord, or that is embraced by the wicked.
Verse 66 (shiva.vayaviya.22.66)
kṛtvāpi sumahatpuṇyamiṣṭvā yajñaśatairapi | na tatphalamavāpnoti bhaktihīno maheśvare
Even having performed great merit, even having sacrificed with hundreds of rites, one devoid of devotion to Maheshvara obtains no fruit of it.
Verse 67 (shiva.vayaviya.22.67)
kṛtvāpi sumahatpāpaṁ bhaktyā yajati yaḥ śivam | mucyate pātakaiḥ sarvairnātra kāryā vicāraṇā
Even having committed a very great sin, whoever worships Shiva with devotion is freed from all sins — of this there is no need for further deliberation.
Verse 68 (shiva.vayaviya.22.68)
bahunātra kimuktena vṛthā dānaṁ vṛthā tapaḥ | vṛthā yajño vṛthā homaḥ śivanindāratasya tu
What use in saying more? For one given to reviling Shiva, charity is in vain, austerity is in vain, sacrifice is in vain, and the fire-offering too is in vain.
Verse 69 (shiva.vayaviya.22.69)
tataḥ sanārāyaṇakāḥ sarudrāḥ salokapālāḥ samare suraughāḥ | gaṇendracāpacyutabāṇaviddhāḥ pradudruvurgāḍharujābhibhūtāḥ
Then the hosts of gods, together with Narayana, together with the Rudras, together with the guardians of the quarters, pierced by arrows loosed from the bow of the lord of the ganas, overwhelmed with deep anguish, fled the battlefield.
Verse 70 (shiva.vayaviya.22.70)
celuḥ kvacitkecana śīrṇakeśāḥ seduḥ kvacitkecana dīrghagātrāḥ | petuḥ kvacitkecana bhinnavaktrā neśuḥ kvacitkecana devavīrāḥ
Here and there some heroic gods staggered, their hair disheveled; here and there some sank down, their long bodies dragging; here and there some fell, their faces torn open; and here and there some simply perished.
Verse 71 (shiva.vayaviya.22.71)
kecicca tatra tridaśā vipannā visrastavastrābharaṇāstraśastrāḥ | nipeturudbhāsitadīnamudrā madaṁ ca darpaṁ ca balaṁ ca hitvā
Some gods there, ruined, their garments, ornaments, and weapons falling away, their pride, arrogance, and strength abandoned, collapsed, wretchedness plain upon them.
Verse 72 (shiva.vayaviya.22.72)
sasmutpathaprasthitamapradhṛṣyo vikṣipya dakṣādhvaramakṣatāstraiḥ | babhau gaṇeśaḥ sa gaṇeśvarāṇāṁ madhye sthitaḥ siṁha ivarṣabhāṇām
Having shattered Daksha's sacrifice with his own unspent weapons, that unassailable lord of the ganas set out upon the pathway of the sky; standing amid the lords of the ganas, he shone forth like a lion amid a herd of bulls.
