The Appeasement of Girisha

Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.23.1)

वायुरुवाच । इति सञ्छिन्नभिन्नाङ्गा देवा विष्णुपुरोगमाः । क्षणात्कष्टां दशामेत्य त्रेसुः स्तोकावशेषिताः

vāyuruvāca | iti sañchinnabhinnāṅgā devā viṣṇupurogamāḥ | kṣaṇātkaṣṭāṁ daśāmetya tresuḥ stokāvaśeṣitāḥ

Vayu said: Thus, with their limbs hacked and torn apart, the gods, headed by Vishnu, having in an instant fallen into a most wretched state, terrified, the few who remained.

Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.23.2)

त्रस्तांस्तान्समरे वीरान् देवानन्यांश्च वै गणाः । प्रमथाः परमक्रुद्धा वीरभद्रप्रणोदिताः

trastāṁstānsamare vīrān devānanyāṁśca vai gaṇāḥ | pramathāḥ paramakruddhā vīrabhadrapraṇoditāḥ

Those terrified heroic gods in battle, and the other gods as well, the utterly enraged Pramathas, urged on by Virabhadra —

Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.23.3)

प्रगृह्य च तथा दोषं निगडैरायसैर्दृढैः । बबन्धुः पाणिपादेषु कन्धरेषूदरेषु च

pragṛhya ca tathā doṣaṁ nigaḍairāyasairdṛḍhaiḥ | babandhuḥ pāṇipādeṣu kandhareṣūdareṣu ca

— seized and bound with sturdy iron fetters at their hands, their feet, their necks, and their bellies.

Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.23.4)

तस्मिन्नवसरे ब्रह्मा भद्रमद्रीन्द्रजानुतम् । सारथ्याल्लब्धवात्सल्यः प्रार्थयन् प्रणतोऽब्रवीत्

tasminnavasare brahmā bhadramadrīndrajānutam | sārathyāllabdhavātsalyaḥ prārthayan praṇato'bravīt

At that moment, Brahma, having gained affection through his role as charioteer, bowing low, entreated Bhadra, honored even by the daughter of the lord of mountains, and spoke —

Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.23.5)

अलं क्रोधेन भगवन्नष्टाश्चैते दिवौकसः । प्रसीद क्षम्यतां सर्वं रोमजैः सह सुव्रत

alaṁ krodhena bhagavannaṣṭāścaite divaukasaḥ | prasīda kṣamyatāṁ sarvaṁ romajaiḥ saha suvrata

O lord, enough of your wrath — these dwellers of heaven are already ruined. Be gracious, O one of noble vows, and forgive all of them, together with the Romaja hosts.

Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.23.6)

एवं विज्ञापितस्तेन ब्रह्मणा परमेष्ठिना । शमं जगाम सम्प्रीतो गणपस्तस्य गौरवात्

evaṁ vijñāpitastena brahmaṇā parameṣṭhinā | śamaṁ jagāma samprīto gaṇapastasya gauravāt

Thus entreated by that supreme Brahma, the lord of the ganas, pleased by his reverence, grew calm.

Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.23.7)

देवाश्च लब्धावसरा देवदेवस्य मन्त्रिणः । धारयन्तोऽञ्जलीन्मूर्ध्नि तुष्टुवुर्विविधैः स्तवैः

devāśca labdhāvasarā devadevasya mantriṇaḥ | dhārayanto'ñjalīnmūrdhni tuṣṭuvurvividhaiḥ stavaiḥ

Seizing the opportunity, the gods, counselors to the God of gods, holding their joined palms above their heads, began to praise him with manifold hymns of praise.

Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.23.8)

देवा ऊचुः । नमः शिवाय शान्ताय यज्ञहन्त्रे त्रिशूलिने । रुद्रभद्राय रुद्राणां पतये रुद्रभूतये

devā ūcuḥ | namaḥ śivāya śāntāya yajñahantre triśūline | rudrabhadrāya rudrāṇāṁ pataye rudrabhūtaye

The gods said: Salutations to Shiva, ever peaceful, destroyer of the sacrifice, wielder of the trident, the auspicious one among the Rudras, lord of the Rudras, of Rudra-like majesty.

Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.23.9)

कालाग्निरुद्ररूपाय कालकामाङ्गहारिणे । देवतानां शिरोहन्त्रे दक्षस्य च दुरात्मनः

kālāgnirudrarūpāya kālakāmāṅgahāriṇe | devatānāṁ śirohantre dakṣasya ca durātmanaḥ

— to him who bears the form of Kalagni Rudra, who once destroyed the very body of Kama, who has now beheaded the gods and the wicked-souled Daksha —

Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.23.10)

संसर्गादस्य पापस्य दक्षस्य क्लिष्टकर्मणः । शासिताः समरे वीर त्वया वयमनिन्दिताः

saṁsargādasya pāpasya dakṣasya kliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ | śāsitāḥ samare vīra tvayā vayamaninditāḥ

O hero, on account of our very association with this sinful Daksha of tainted deeds, we, though blameless, have been chastised by you in battle.

Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.23.11)

दग्धाश्चामी वयं सर्वे त्वत्तो भीताश्च भो प्रभो । त्वमेव गतिरस्माकं त्राहि नः शरणागतान्

dagdhāścāmī vayaṁ sarve tvatto bhītāśca bho prabho | tvameva gatirasmākaṁ trāhi naḥ śaraṇāgatān

O lord, all of us have been burned, and are terrified of you as well. You alone are our refuge; protect us, who have come to you for shelter.

Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.23.12)

वायुरुवाच । तुष्टस्त्वेवं स्तुतो देवान् विसृज्य निगडात्प्रभुः । आनयद्देवदेवस्य समीपममरानिह

vāyuruvāca | tuṣṭastvevaṁ stuto devān visṛjya nigaḍātprabhuḥ | ānayaddevadevasya samīpamamarāniha

Vayu said: Thus praised and pleased, the lord released the gods from their fetters and brought them here, into the presence of the God of gods.

Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.23.13)

देवोऽपि तत्र भगवानन्तरिक्षे स्थितः प्रभुः । सगणः सर्वगः शर्वः सर्वलोकमहेश्वरः

devo'pi tatra bhagavānantarikṣe sthitaḥ prabhuḥ | sagaṇaḥ sarvagaḥ śarvaḥ sarvalokamaheśvaraḥ

There the lord God himself, Sharva, though all-pervading, was present in the sky, together with his hosts — the great Lord of all the worlds.

Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.23.14)

तं दृष्ट्वा परमेशानं देवा विष्णुपुरोगमाः । प्रीता अपि च भीताश्च नमश्चक्रुर्महेश्वरम्

taṁ dṛṣṭvā parameśānaṁ devā viṣṇupurogamāḥ | prītā api ca bhītāśca namaścakrurmaheśvaram

Seeing that supreme Lord, the gods, headed by Vishnu, both delighted and afraid, bowed down to Maheshvara.

Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.23.15)

दृष्ट्वा तानमरान्भीतान्प्रणतार्तिहरो हरः । इदमाह महादेवः प्रहसन् प्रेक्ष्य पार्वतीम्

dṛṣṭvā tānamarānbhītānpraṇatārtiharo haraḥ | idamāha mahādevaḥ prahasan prekṣya pārvatīm

Seeing those terrified gods, Hara, remover of the suffering of those who bow to him, looked toward Parvati and, smiling, spoke as follows —

Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.23.16)

महादेव उवाच । मा भैष्ट त्रिदशाः सर्वे यूयं वै मामिकाः प्रजाः । अनुग्रहार्थमेवेह धृतो दण्डः कृपालुना

mahādeva uvāca | mā bhaiṣṭa tridaśāḥ sarve yūyaṁ vai māmikāḥ prajāḥ | anugrahārthameveha dhṛto daṇḍaḥ kṛpālunā

Mahadeva said: Be not afraid, all you gods, for you are indeed my own creatures. This punishment was inflicted, by a merciful one, only for the sake of your own good.

Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.23.17)

भवतां निर्ज्जराणां हि क्षान्तोऽस्माभिर्व्यतिक्रमः । क्रुद्धेष्वस्मासु युष्माकं न स्थितिर्न च जीवितम्

bhavatāṁ nirjjarāṇāṁ hi kṣānto'smābhirvyatikramaḥ | kruddheṣvasmāsu yuṣmākaṁ na sthitirna ca jīvitam

This transgression of you, the undying ones, has been forgiven by us; had we truly been enraged, neither your existence nor your very life would remain.

Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.23.18)

वायुरुवाच । इत्युक्तास्त्रिदशाः सर्वे शर्वेणामिततेजसा । सद्यो विगतसन्देहा ननृतुर्विबुधा मुदा

vāyuruvāca | ityuktāstridaśāḥ sarve śarveṇāmitatejasā | sadyo vigatasandehā nanṛturvibudhā mudā

Vayu said: Thus addressed by Sharva of immeasurable splendor, all the gods, instantly freed of doubt, danced in joy.

Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.23.19)

प्रसन्नमनसो भूत्वानन्दविह्वलमानसाः । स्तुतिमारेभिरे कर्तुं शङ्करस्य दिवौकसः

prasannamanaso bhūtvānandavihvalamānasāḥ | stutimārebhire kartuṁ śaṅkarasya divaukasaḥ

With minds now gladdened, overwhelmed with joy, the dwellers of heaven began to offer praise to Shankara.

Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.23.20)

देवा ऊचुः । त्वमेव देवाखिललोककर्ता पाता च हर्ता परमेश्वरोऽसि । कविष्णुरुद्राख्यस्वरूपभेदै रजस्तमः सत्त्वधृतात्ममूर्त्ते

devā ūcuḥ | tvameva devākhilalokakartā pātā ca hartā parameśvaro'si | kaviṣṇurudrākhyasvarūpabhedai rajastamaḥ sattvadhṛtātmamūrtte

The gods said: O God, you alone are the creator, protector, and destroyer of all the worlds, you alone are the Supreme Lord — through the differentiated forms named Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra, in bodies bearing the qualities of rajas, tamas, and sattva.

Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.23.21)

सर्वमूर्त्ते नमस्तेऽस्तु विश्वभावन पावन । अमूर्त्ते भक्तहेतोर्हि गृहीताकृतिसौख्यद

sarvamūrtte namaste'stu viśvabhāvana pāvana | amūrtte bhaktahetorhi gṛhītākṛtisaukhyada

Salutations to you, purifier, creator of the universe, who is all forms — and who, though formless, assumes a form for the sake of devotees, bestowing happiness.

Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.23.22)

चन्द्रोऽगदो हि देवेश कृपातस्तव शङ्कर । निमज्जनान्मृतः प्राप सुखं मिहिरजाजलिः

candro'gado hi deveśa kṛpātastava śaṅkara | nimajjanānmṛtaḥ prāpa sukhaṁ mihirajājaliḥ

O lord of gods, Shankara, by your grace alone the moon became free of disease, and the sun's own offspring, who had died by drowning, attained happiness.

Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.23.23)

सीमन्तिनी हतधवा तव पूजनतः प्रभो । सौभाग्यमतुलं प्राप सोमवारव्रतात्सुतान्

sīmantinī hatadhavā tava pūjanataḥ prabho | saubhāgyamatulaṁ prāpa somavāravratātsutān

O lord, by worshiping you a widowed woman obtained unequalled good fortune, and through the observance of the Monday vow obtained sons.

Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.23.24)

श्रीकराय ददौ देवः स्वीयं पदमनुत्तमम् । सुदर्शनमरक्षस्त्वं नृपमण्डलभीतितः

śrīkarāya dadau devaḥ svīyaṁ padamanuttamam | sudarśanamarakṣastvaṁ nṛpamaṇḍalabhītitaḥ

You, the God, granted your own unsurpassed abode to Shrikara; and you protected Sudarshana from the terror of an assembly of kings.

Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.23.25)

मेदुरं तारयामास सदारं च घृणानिधिः । शारदां विधवां चक्रे सधवां क्रियया भवान्

meduraṁ tārayāmāsa sadāraṁ ca ghṛṇānidhiḥ | śāradāṁ vidhavāṁ cakre sadhavāṁ kriyayā bhavān

You, the very ocean of compassion, delivered Medura together with his wife; and through your rite, you restored the widowed Sharada to the state of a wedded woman.

Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.23.26)

भद्रायुषो विपत्तिं च विच्छिद्य त्वमदाः सुखम् । सौमिनी भवबन्धाद्वै मुक्ताभूत्तव सेवनात्

bhadrāyuṣo vipattiṁ ca vicchidya tvamadāḥ sukham | sauminī bhavabandhādvai muktābhūttava sevanāt

You cut away the calamity of Bhadrayu and granted him happiness; and through devotion to you, Saumini was freed from the bondage of worldly existence.

Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.23.27)

विष्णुरुवाच । त्वं शम्भो कहरीशाश्च रजस्सत्त्वतमोगुणैः । कर्ता पाता तथा हर्ता जनानुग्रहकाङ्क्षया

viṣṇuruvāca | tvaṁ śambho kaharīśāśca rajassattvatamoguṇaiḥ | kartā pātā tathā hartā janānugrahakāṅkṣayā

Vishnu said: O Shambhu, you alone, through the qualities of rajas, sattva, and tamas, are the creator, protector, and destroyer, out of desire to favor your creatures.

Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.23.28)

सर्वगर्वापहारी च सर्वतेजोविलासकः । सर्वविद्यादिगूढश्च सर्वानुग्रहकारकः

sarvagarvāpahārī ca sarvatejovilāsakaḥ | sarvavidyādigūḍhaśca sarvānugrahakārakaḥ

You are the taker of all pride, the one who sports with all splendor, hidden secretly within all forms of knowledge, and the doer of favor to all.

Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.23.29)

त्वत्तः सर्वं च त्वं सर्वं त्वयि सर्वं गिरीश्वर । त्राहि त्राहि पुनस्त्राहि कृपां कुरु ममोपरि

tvattaḥ sarvaṁ ca tvaṁ sarvaṁ tvayi sarvaṁ girīśvara | trāhi trāhi punastrāhi kṛpāṁ kuru mamopari

O lord of the mountain, from you comes everything, you are everything, in you is everything. Save me, save me, save me again — have mercy upon me.

Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.23.30)

अथास्मिन्नन्तरे ब्रह्मा प्रणिपत्य कृताञ्जलिः । एवं त्ववसरं प्राप्य व्यज्ञापयत शूलिने

athāsminnantare brahmā praṇipatya kṛtāñjaliḥ | evaṁ tvavasaraṁ prāpya vyajñāpayata śūline

Then, at that moment, Brahma, bowing down with joined palms, seizing this opportunity, addressed the trident-bearer thus.

Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.23.31)

ब्रह्मोवाच । जय देव महादेव प्रणतार्तिविभञ्जन । ईदृशेष्वपराधेषु कोऽन्यस्त्वत्तः प्रसीदति

brahmovāca | jaya deva mahādeva praṇatārtivibhañjana | īdṛśeṣvaparādheṣu ko'nyastvattaḥ prasīdati

Brahma said: Victory to you, O Mahadeva, destroyer of the suffering of those who bow to you! In offenses such as these, who but you could ever grow gracious?

Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.23.32)

लब्धात्मानो भविष्यन्ति ये पुरा निहता मृधे । प्रत्यापत्तिर्न कस्य स्यात्प्रसन्ने परमेश्वरे

labdhātmāno bhaviṣyanti ye purā nihatā mṛdhe | pratyāpattirna kasya syātprasanne parameśvare

Those who were slain earlier in battle shall regain themselves once more. When the Supreme Lord is gracious, whose restoration would not follow?

Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.23.33)

यदिदं देवदेवानां कृतमन्तुषु दूषणम् । तदिदं भूषणं मन्ये त अङ्गीकारगौरवात्

yadidaṁ devadevānāṁ kṛtamantuṣu dūṣaṇam | tadidaṁ bhūṣaṇaṁ manye ta aṅgīkāragauravāt

This very censure that you have inflicted upon the gods of gods, I regard it as an ornament, on account of the honor of your having taken it upon yourself.

Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.23.34)

इति विज्ञाप्यमानस्तु ब्रह्मणा परमेष्ठिना । विलोक्य वदनं देव्या देवदेवः स्मयन्निव

iti vijñāpyamānastu brahmaṇā parameṣṭhinā | vilokya vadanaṁ devyā devadevaḥ smayanniva

Thus entreated by the supreme Brahma, glancing at the Goddess's face, the God of gods, as though smiling —

Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.23.35)

पुत्रभूतस्य वात्सल्याद् ब्रह्मणः पद्मजन्मनः । देवादीनां यथापूर्वमङ्गानि प्रददौ प्रभुः

putrabhūtasya vātsalyād brahmaṇaḥ padmajanmanaḥ | devādīnāṁ yathāpūrvamaṅgāni pradadau prabhuḥ

— out of affection for Brahma, born of the lotus, who was to him as a son, the Lord restored the limbs of the gods to their former state.

Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.23.36)

प्रमथाद्यैश्च या देव्यो दण्डिता देवमातरः । तासामपि यथापूर्वाण्यङ्गानि गिरिशो ददौ

pramathādyaiśca yā devyo daṇḍitā devamātaraḥ | tāsāmapi yathāpūrvāṇyaṅgāni giriśo dadau

Those goddesses, mothers of the gods, who had been punished by the Pramathas and the rest, to them too Girisha restored their limbs as they had been before.

Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.23.37)

दक्षस्य भगवानेव स्वयं ब्रह्मा पितामहः । तत्पापानुगुणं चक्रे जरच्छागमुखं मुखम्

dakṣasya bhagavāneva svayaṁ brahmā pitāmahaḥ | tatpāpānuguṇaṁ cakre jaracchāgamukhaṁ mukham

For Daksha, the lord Grandsire Brahma himself fashioned, fitting to his sin, a head like that of an old he-goat.

Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.23.38)

सोऽपि संज्ञां ततो लब्ध्वा स दृष्ट्वा जीवितः सुधीः । भीतः कृताञ्जलिः शम्भुं तुष्टाव प्रलपन्बहु

so'pi saṁjñāṁ tato labdhvā sa dṛṣṭvā jīvitaḥ sudhīḥ | bhītaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ śambhuṁ tuṣṭāva pralapanbahu

He too, regaining consciousness and finding himself alive, though wise, was terrified, and, with joined palms, babbling much, began to praise Shambhu.

Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.23.39)

दक्ष उवाच । जय देव जगन्नाथ लोकानुग्रहकारक । कृपां कुरु महेशानापराधं मे क्षमस्व ह

dakṣa uvāca | jaya deva jagannātha lokānugrahakāraka | kṛpāṁ kuru maheśānāparādhaṁ me kṣamasva ha

Daksha said: Victory to you, O Lord of the universe, benefactor of all the worlds! O Maheshvara, be gracious — forgive my offense.

Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.23.40)

कर्त्ता भर्त्ता च हर्ता च त्वमेव जगतां प्रभुः । मया ज्ञातं विशेषेण विष्ण्वादिसकलेश्वरः

karttā bharttā ca hartā ca tvameva jagatāṁ prabhuḥ | mayā jñātaṁ viśeṣeṇa viṣṇvādisakaleśvaraḥ

You alone are the creator, sustainer, and destroyer, the lord of the worlds; I have come to know especially that you alone are the Lord of all lords, including Vishnu and the rest.

Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.23.41)

त्वयैव विततं सर्वं व्याप्तं सृष्टं च नाशितम् । न हि त्वदधिकाः केचिदीशास्तेऽच्युतकादयः

tvayaiva vitataṁ sarvaṁ vyāptaṁ sṛṣṭaṁ ca nāśitam | na hi tvadadhikāḥ kecidīśāste'cyutakādayaḥ

By you alone has everything been spread out, pervaded, created, and destroyed; no lords whatsoever, including Achyuta and the rest, are greater than you.

Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.23.42)

वायुरुवाच । तं तथा व्याकुलं भीतं प्रलपन्तं कृतागसम् । स्मयन्निवावदत्प्रेक्ष्य मा भैरिति घृणानिधिः

vāyuruvāca | taṁ tathā vyākulaṁ bhītaṁ pralapantaṁ kṛtāgasam | smayannivāvadatprekṣya mā bhairiti ghṛṇānidhiḥ

Vayu said: Seeing that offender, so distressed, terrified, babbling on, the ocean of compassion, as though smiling, said to him: "Fear not."

Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.23.43)

तथोक्त्वा ब्रह्मणस्तस्य पितुः प्रियचिकीर्षया । गाणपत्यं ददौ तस्मै दक्षायाक्षयमीश्वरः

tathoktvā brahmaṇastasya pituḥ priyacikīrṣayā | gāṇapatyaṁ dadau tasmai dakṣāyākṣayamīśvaraḥ

Having said this, out of desire to please his father Brahma, the Lord bestowed upon Daksha the imperishable lordship over the ganas.

Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.23.44)

ततो ब्रह्मादयो देवा अभिवन्द्य कृताञ्जलिः । तुष्टुवुः प्रश्रया वाचा शङ्करं गिरिजाधिपम्

tato brahmādayo devā abhivandya kṛtāñjaliḥ | tuṣṭuvuḥ praśrayā vācā śaṅkaraṁ girijādhipam

Then the gods, headed by Brahma, with joined palms, having offered homage, praised Shankara, lord of Girija, with humble words.

Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.23.45)

ब्रह्मादय ऊचुः । जय शङ्कर देवेश दीनानाथ महाप्रभो । कृपां कुरु महेशानापराधं नो क्षमस्व वै

brahmādaya ūcuḥ | jaya śaṅkara deveśa dīnānātha mahāprabho | kṛpāṁ kuru maheśānāparādhaṁ no kṣamasva vai

Brahma and the others said: Victory to you, O Shankara, lord of gods, protector of the wretched, great Lord! O Maheshvara, be gracious — forgive our offense.

Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.23.46)

मखपाल मखाधीश मखविध्वंसकारक । कृपां कुरु महेशानापराधं नः क्षमस्व वै

makhapāla makhādhīśa makhavidhvaṁsakāraka | kṛpāṁ kuru maheśānāparādhaṁ naḥ kṣamasva vai

O guardian of sacrifices, O lord of sacrifices, O destroyer of sacrifices! Be gracious — forgive our offense.

Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.23.47)

देवदेव परेशान भक्तप्राणप्रपोषक । दुष्टदण्डप्रदः स्वामिन्कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते

devadeva pareśāna bhaktaprāṇaprapoṣaka | duṣṭadaṇḍapradaḥ svāminkṛpāṁ kuru namo'stu te

O God of gods, Supreme Lord, sustainer of the very life of your devotees, O master who metes out punishment to the wicked, be gracious; salutations to you.

Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.23.48)

त्वं प्रभो गर्वहर्ता वै दुष्टानां त्वामजानताम् । रक्षको हि विशेषेण सतां त्वत्सक्तचेतसाम्

tvaṁ prabho garvahartā vai duṣṭānāṁ tvāmajānatām | rakṣako hi viśeṣeṇa satāṁ tvatsaktacetasām

O Lord, you are the humbler of the pride of the wicked who know you not, and you are especially the protector of the virtuous, whose minds are devoted to you.

Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.23.49)

अद्भुतं चरितं ते हि निश्चितं कृपया तव । सर्वापराधः क्षन्तव्यो विभवो दीनवत्सलाः

adbhutaṁ caritaṁ te hi niścitaṁ kṛpayā tava | sarvāparādhaḥ kṣantavyo vibhavo dīnavatsalāḥ

Your conduct is indeed wondrous, assuredly graced by your own mercy. O one tender toward the wretched, the forgiving of every offense is itself your true majesty.

Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.23.50)

वायुरुवाच । इति स्तुतो महादेवो ब्रह्माद्यैरमरैः प्रभुः । स भक्तवत्सलः स्वामी तुतोष करुणोदधिः

vāyuruvāca | iti stuto mahādevo brahmādyairamaraiḥ prabhuḥ | sa bhaktavatsalaḥ svāmī tutoṣa karuṇodadhiḥ

Vayu said: Thus praised by Brahma and the other gods, that lord Mahadeva, tender toward his devotees, an ocean of compassion, was pleased.

Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.23.51)

चकारानुग्रहं तेषां ब्रह्मादीनां दिवौकसाम् । ददौ वरांश्च सुप्रीत्या शङ्करो दीनवत्सलः

cakārānugrahaṁ teṣāṁ brahmādīnāṁ divaukasām | dadau varāṁśca suprītyā śaṅkaro dīnavatsalaḥ

Shankara, tender toward the wretched, showed favor to Brahma and the other gods, and, with great delight, granted them boons as well.

Verse 52 (shiva.vayaviya.23.52)

स च ततस्त्रिदशान् शरणागतान् परमकारुणिकः परमेश्वरः । अनुगतस्मितलक्षणया गिरा शमितसर्वभयः समभाषत

sa ca tatastridaśān śaraṇāgatān paramakāruṇikaḥ parameśvaraḥ | anugatasmitalakṣaṇayā girā śamitasarvabhayaḥ samabhāṣata

Then that supremely compassionate Supreme Lord addressed those gods, who had come to him for refuge, in a voice touched with a smile, allaying all their fear —

Verse 53 (shiva.vayaviya.23.53)

शिव उवाच । यदिदमाग इहाचरितं सुरैर्विधिनियोगवशादिव यन्त्रितैः । शरणमेव गतानवलोक्य वस्तदखिलं किल विस्मृतमेव नः

śiva uvāca | yadidamāga ihācaritaṁ surairvidhiniyogavaśādiva yantritaiḥ | śaraṇameva gatānavalokya vastadakhilaṁ kila vismṛtameva naḥ

Shiva said: Whatever offense was committed here by you gods, as though bound and constrained by the very compulsion of destiny — having seen you come to me for refuge, all of it, indeed, we have utterly forgotten.

Verse 54 (shiva.vayaviya.23.54)

तदिह यूयमपि प्रकृतं मनस्यविगणय्य विमर्दमपत्रपाः । हरिविरिञ्चिसुरेन्द्रमुखाः सुखं व्रजत देवपुरं प्रति सम्प्रति

tadiha yūyamapi prakṛtaṁ manasyavigaṇayya vimardamapatrapāḥ | hariviriñcisurendramukhāḥ sukhaṁ vrajata devapuraṁ prati samprati

Therefore, O Hari, Virinchi, and Indra, and all of you, do you too, dismissing this past event, this conflict, from your minds, free of shame, now proceed happily toward the city of the gods.

Verse 55 (shiva.vayaviya.23.55)

इति सुरानभिधाय सुरेश्वरो निकृतदक्षकृतक्रतुरक्रतुः । स गिरिजानुचरः सपरिच्छदः स्थित इवाम्बरतोन्तरधाद्धरः

iti surānabhidhāya sureśvaro nikṛtadakṣakṛtakraturakratuḥ | sa girijānucaraḥ saparicchadaḥ sthita ivāmbaratontaradhāddharaḥ

Having spoken thus to the gods, that Lord of gods Hara, who had destroyed the sacrifice made by Daksha, himself beyond all rites, together with Girija's attendants and his own retinue, standing there in the sky, disappeared, as it were.

Verse 56 (shiva.vayaviya.23.56)

अथ सुरा अपि ते विगतव्यथाः कथितभद्रसुभद्रपराक्रमाः । सपदि खेन सुखेन यथासुखं ययुरनेकमुखाः मघवन्मुखाः

atha surā api te vigatavyathāḥ kathitabhadrasubhadraparākramāḥ | sapadi khena sukhena yathāsukhaṁ yayuranekamukhāḥ maghavanmukhāḥ

Then those gods too, freed of their anguish, speaking of Bhadra's most auspicious valor, headed by Indra, of many faces, at once departed happily through the sky, each as he pleased.
