Vayaviya Samhita · Chapter 34

Upamanyu's Austerity

Chapter 33All chaptersChapter 35

Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.34.1)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ | dhaumyāgrajena śiśunā kṣīrārthaṁ hi tapaḥ kṛtam | tasmāt kṣīrārṇavo dattastasmai devena śūlinā

The sages said: Dhaumya's elder brother, while yet a child, performed austerity for the sake of milk — and for this the trident-bearing God granted him an ocean of milk.

Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.34.2)

sa kathaṁ śiśuko lebhe śivaśāstrapravaktṛtām | kathaṁ vā śivasadbhāvaṁ jñātvā tapasi niṣṭhitaḥ

How did that child come to attain the office of expounder of Shiva's scripture? And how, having come to know the true nature of Shiva, did he become established in austerity?

Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.34.3)

kathaṁ ca labdhavijñānastapaścaraṇaparvaṇi | rudrāgneryatparaṁ vīryaṁ labhe bhasma svarakṣakam

And how, in the course of his austerity, did he attain that knowledge whereby he obtained sacred ash — the supreme potency of Rudra's fire, itself his own protector?

Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.34.4)

vāyuruvāca | na hyeṣa śiśukaḥ kaścitprākṛtaḥ kṛtavāṁstapaḥ | munivaryasya tanayo vyāghrapādasya dhīmataḥ

Vayu said: This was no ordinary child who performed the austerity — he was the son of the wise and eminent sage Vyaghrapada.

Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.34.5)

janmāntareṇa saṁsiddhaḥ kenāpi khalu hetunā | svapadapracyuto diṣṭyā prāpto munikumāratām

In a former birth he had, for some reason, already attained perfection; by a stroke of fortune, having fallen from his prior station, he came to be born as a sage's child.

Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.34.6)

mahādevaprasādasya bhāgyāpannasya bhāvinaḥ | dugdhābhilāṣaprabhavadvāratāmagamattapaḥ

That fortunate and destined child, one favored to receive Mahadeva's grace, undertook his austerity — an austerity born, in its beginning, from a mere longing for milk.

Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.34.7)

ataḥ sarvagaṇeśatvaṁ kumāratvaṁ ca śāśvatam | saha dugdhābdhinā tasmai pradadau śaṅkaraḥ svayam

Therefore Shankara himself granted him, together with the ocean of milk, lordship over all the ganas and eternal youth as well.

Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.34.8)

tasya jñānāgamo'pyasya prasādādeva śāṅkarāt | kaumāraṁ hi paraṁ sākṣājjñānaṁ śaktimayaṁ viduḥ

His attainment of knowledge, too, came about solely through Shankara's grace; that knowledge of his boyhood is known to be, in itself, the supreme knowledge charged with divine power.

Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.34.9)

śivaśāstrapravaktṛtvamapi tasya hi tatkṛtam | kumāromukhato labdhajñānābdheriva nandinaḥ

His becoming an expounder of Shiva's scripture, too, was brought about by that same Lord — just as Nandi received the ocean of knowledge from the very mouth of Kumara.

Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.34.10)

dṛṣṭaṁ tu kāraṇaṁ tasya śivajñānasamanvaye | svamātṛvacanaṁ sākṣācchokajaṁ kṣīrakāraṇāt

But the visible cause of his coming to that knowledge of Shiva was, in fact, his own mother's word — spoken directly out of the grief caused by the matter of the milk.

Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.34.11)

kadācitkṣīramatyalpaṁ pītavānmātulāśrame | īrṣyayā mātulasutaṁ santṛptakṣīramuttamam

Once, at his maternal uncle's hermitage, he had drunk only very little milk; and, with envy, he saw his uncle's son fully satisfied with fine milk.

Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.34.12)

pītvā sthitaṁ yathākāmaṁ dṛṣṭvā vai mātulātmajam | upamanyurvyāghrapādiḥ prītyā provāca mātaram

Seeing his cousin, his uncle's son, sitting there having drunk his fill as he pleased, Upamanyu, son of Vyaghrapada, spoke lovingly to his mother.

Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.34.13)

upamanyuruvāca | mātarmātarmahābhāge mama dehi tapasvini | gavyaṁ kṣīramatisvādu nālpamuṣṇaṁ pibāmyaham

Upamanyu said: Mother, mother, O blessed and ascetic one, give me some cow's milk, very sweet — I will not drink just a little warm milk.

Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.34.14)

vāyuruvāca | tacchrutvā putravacanaṁ tanmātā ca tapasvinī | vyāghrapādasya mahiṣī duḥkhamāpattadā ca sā

Vayu said: Hearing her son's words, that ascetic woman, the wife of Vyaghrapada and his mother, was overcome with grief at that moment.

Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.34.15)

upalālyātha suprītyā putramāliṅgya sādaram | duḥkhitā vilalāpātha smṛtvā nairdhanyamātmanaḥ

Then, tenderly caressing her son and embracing him with affection, remembering her own poverty, she fell to grieving and lamenting.

Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.34.16)

smṛtvā smṛtvā punaḥ kṣīramupamanyuḥ sa bālakaḥ | dehi dehīti tāmāha rudranbhūyo mahādyutiḥ

Recalling the milk again and again, that radiant child Upamanyu wept and repeated to her, again and again, "Give it to me, give it to me."

Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.34.17)

tad haṭhaṁ sā parijñāya dvijapatnī tapasvinī | śāntaye tad haṭhasyātha śubhopāyamarīracat

Recognizing his obstinacy, that ascetic brahmin's wife devised a benign expedient to soothe his insistence.

Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.34.18)

uñchavṛttyārjitānbījānsvayaṁ dṛṣṭvā ca sā tadā | bījapiṣṭamathāloḍya toyena kalabhāṣiṇī

Looking herself at the grain gathered by gleaning, that sweet-voiced woman then mixed the ground flour of that grain with water —

Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.34.19)

ehyehi mama putreti sāmapūrvaṁ tataḥ sutam | āliṅgyādāya duḥkhārtā pradadau kṛtrimaṁ payaḥ

and saying, "come, come, my son," soothing him gently, embracing her son, and stricken with grief, she gave him that imitation milk.

Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.34.20)

pītvā ca kṛtrimaṁ kṣīraṁ mātrāṁ dattaṁ sa bālakaḥ | naitatkṣīramiti prāha mātaraṁ cātivihvalaḥ

Having drunk that imitation milk given by his mother, the child, greatly distressed, said to his mother: "This is not milk."

Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.34.21)

duḥkhitā sā tadā prāha samprekṣyāghrāya mūrddhani | sammārjya netra putrasya karābhyāṁ kamalāyate

Then, grieving, she looked at him, smelt the top of his head in affection, and wiping her son's eyes with her lotus-like hands, spoke.

Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.34.22)

jananyuvāca | taṭinī ratnapūrṇāstāḥ svargapātālagocarāḥ | bhāgyahīnā na paśyanti bhaktihīnāśca ye śive

The mother said: There are rivers full of jewels, ranging through heaven and the netherworld; but those who are unfortunate, and lack devotion to Shiva, never behold them.

Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.34.23)

rājyaṁ svargaṁ ca mokṣaṁ ca bhojanaṁ kṣīrasambhavam | na labhante priyāṇyeṣāṁ na tuṣyati yadā śivaḥ

Kingdom, heaven, liberation, and food made of milk — none of these precious things come to those with whom Shiva is not yet pleased.

Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.34.24)

bhavaprasādajaṁ sarvaṁ nānyaddevaprasādajam | anyadeveṣu niratā duḥkhārtā vibhramanti ca

Everything is born of Shiva's grace, and of no other god's grace; those devoted to other gods wander about, afflicted with sorrow.

Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.34.25)

kṣīraṁ tatra kuto'smākaṁ vane nivasatāṁ sadā | kva dugdhasādhanaṁ vatsa kva vayaṁ vanavāsinaḥ

For us, who dwell always in the forest, where indeed would milk come from? My child, where are the means to obtain milk, and where are we, mere forest-dwellers?

Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.34.26)

kṛtsnābhāvena dāridryānmayā te bhāgyahīnayā | mithyādugdhamidaṁ dattaṁ piṣṭamāloḍya vāriṇā

For want of all means, and because of my poverty, I, unfortunate as I am, gave you this false milk, made only of flour mixed with water.

Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.34.27)

tvaṁ mātulagṛhe svalpaṁ pītvā svādu payaḥ śrutam | jñātvā svādu tvayā pītaṁ tajjātīyamanusmaran

You drank a little of that renowned sweet milk at your uncle's house, and having known its sweetness, remembering that same kind of milk —

Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.34.28)

dattaṁ na paya ityuktvā rudan duḥkhīkaroṣi mām | prasādena vinā śambhoḥ payastava na vidyate

you weep and say "this is not milk," and so cause me grief; but without Shambhu's grace, no milk at all can be had by you.

Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.34.29)

pādapaṅkajayostasya sāmbasya sagaṇasya ca | bhaktyā samarpitaṁ yattatkāraṇaṁ sarvasampadām

Whatever is offered with devotion at the lotus feet of that Shiva, together with Amba and his hosts, is the true cause of all prosperity.

Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.34.30)

adhunā vasudo'smābhirmahādevo na pūjitaḥ | sakāmānāṁ yathākāmaṁ yathoktaphaladāyakaḥ

Up to now we have not worshipped that Mahadeva, the bestower of wealth, who grants to desirous devotees the very fruits he has promised, exactly as they wish.

Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.34.31)

dhanānyuddiśya nāsmābhiritaḥ prāgarcitaḥ śivaḥ | ato daridrāḥ sañjātā vayaṁ tasmānna te payaḥ

We have not, until now, worshipped Shiva with wealth as our object; that is why we have become poor, and that is why there is no milk for you.

Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.34.32)

pūrvajanmani yaddattaṁ śivamuddiśya vai sutaḥ | tadeva labhyate nānyad viṣṇumuddiśya vā prabhum

My son, only that which was given in a former birth with Shiva as its object is obtained again; not even what was given with Lord Vishnu as its object equals it.

Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.34.33)

vāyuruvāca | iti mātṛvacaḥ śrutvā tathyaṁ śokādisūcakam | bālo'pyanutapannantaḥ pragalbhamidamabravīt

Vayu said: Hearing this truthful word of his mother, disclosing her grief, the boy too, inwardly repentant, spoke these bold words.

Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.34.34)

upamanyuruvāca | śokenālamito mataḥ sāmbo yadyasti śaṅkaraḥ | tyaja śokaṁ mahābhāge sarvaṁ bhadraṁ bhaviṣyati

Upamanyu said: Enough of grief now, mother — if Shankara, together with Amba, truly exists, then, O blessed one, cast off your sorrow; all will yet be well.

Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.34.35)

śṛṇu mātarvaco me'dya mahādevo'sti cet kvacit | cirādvā hyacirādvāpi kṣīrodaṁ sādhayāmyaham

Listen to my word today, mother: if Mahadeva exists anywhere at all, then whether it takes long or comes swiftly, I myself shall win an ocean of milk.

Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.34.36)

vāyuruvāca | iti śrutvā vacastasya bālakasya mahāmateḥ | pratyuvāca tadā mātā suprasannā manasvinī

Vayu said: Having heard these words of that wise-minded boy, his thoughtful mother, greatly pleased, replied to him.

Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.34.37)

mātovāca | śubhaṁ vicāritaṁ tāta tvayā matprītivarddhanam | vilambaṁ mā kathāstvaṁ hi bhaja sāmbaṁ sadāśivam

The mother said: My child, you have resolved on something good, and it increases my joy; delay no more — go now and worship Sadashiva, together with Amba.

Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.34.38)

sarvasmādadhiko'styeva śivaḥ paramakāraṇam | tatkṛtaṁ hi jagatsarvaṁ brahmādyāstasya kiṅkarāḥ

Shiva alone is greater than all, the supreme cause; this entire universe is his making, and Brahma and the other gods are his servants.

Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.34.39)

tatprasādakṛtaiśvaryā dāsāstasya vayaṁ prabhoḥ | taṁ vinānyaṁ na jānīmaḥ śaṅkaraṁ lokaśaṅkaram

All lordship comes only through his grace; we are servants of that Lord alone. Apart from Shankara, the bringer of good fortune to the world, we know none other.

Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.34.40)

anyān devānn parityajya karmaṇā manasā girā | tameva sāmbaṁ sagaṇaṁ bhaja bhāvapurassaram

Setting aside all other gods, in deed, in mind, and in word, worship that same Shiva alone, with Amba and his hosts, in a spirit of loving devotion.

Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.34.41)

tasya devādhidevasya śivasya varadāyinaḥ | sākṣānnamaḥ śivāyeti mantro'yaṁ vācakaḥ smṛtaḥ

For that God of gods, Shiva, the bestower of boons — the mantra "namaḥ śivāya" itself, directly, is held to be his very name and word.

Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.34.42)

saptakoṭimahāmantrāḥ sarve sapraṇavāḥ pare | tasminneva vilīyante punastasmādvinirgatāḥ

All the seventy million great mantras, together with the syllable Om, dissolve into that mantra alone, and again issue forth from it.

Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.34.43)

saprasādāśca te mantrāḥ svādhikārādyapekṣayā | sarvādhikārastveko'yaṁ mantra eveśvarājñayā

All those mantras bear grace only in relation to their own particular sphere of authority; but by the Lord's own command, this one mantra alone holds authority over all.

Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.34.44)

yathā nikṛṣṭānutkṛṣṭānsarvānapyātmanaḥ śivaḥ | kṣamate rakṣituṁ tadvanmantro'yamapi sarvadā

Just as Shiva himself is capable of protecting all beings, whether lowly or exalted, so too is this mantra always capable of protecting all.

Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.34.45)

prabalaśca tathā hyeṣa mantro mantrāntarādapi | sarvarakṣākṣamo'pyeṣa nāparaḥ kaścidiṣyate

This mantra, moreover, is more powerful than any other mantra; it alone is capable of protecting all, and no other is held to be its equal.

Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.34.46)

tasmānmantrāntarāṁstyaktvā pañcākṣaraparo bhava | tasmin jihvāntaragate na kiñcidiha durlabham

Therefore, abandoning other mantras, devote yourself wholly to the five-syllabled mantra; once it has come to rest upon the tongue, nothing at all remains unattainable in this world.

Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.34.47)

aghorāstraṁ ca śaivānāṁ rakṣāheturanuttamam | tacca tatprabhavaṁ matvā tatparo bhava nānyathā

The Aghora-astra is the supreme means of protection for the Shaivas; know that it too arises from that same Shiva, and be devoted to it accordingly, and to nothing else.

Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.34.48)

bhasmedaṁ tu mayā labdhaṁ pitureva tavottamam | virajānalasaṁsiddhaṁ mahāvyāpannivāraṇam

This excellent sacred ash I myself received from your very father — perfected through the Viraja-fire, and able to ward off great calamity.

Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.34.49)

mantraṁ ca te mayā dattaṁ gṛhāṇa madanujñayā | anenaivāśu japtena rakṣā tava bhaviṣyati

And take up, with my sanction, the mantra I have given you; by swiftly reciting this alone, your protection will be assured.

Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.34.50)

vāyuruvāca | evaṁ mātrā samādiśya śivamastvityudīrya ca | visṛṣṭastadvaco mūrdhni kurvanneva tadā muniḥ

Vayu said: Thus instructed by his mother, and saying "may it be auspicious," the sage-child, bearing her words upon his very head, took his leave.

Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.34.51)

tāṁ praṇamyaivamuktvā ca tapaḥ kartuṁ pracakrame | tamāha ca tadā mātā śubhaṁ kurvantu te surāḥ

Having bowed to her and spoken thus, he set out to perform austerity; and his mother then said to him, "may the gods grant you well-being."

Verse 52 (shiva.vayaviya.34.52)

anujñātastayā tatra tapastepe sa duścaram | himavatparvataṁ prāpya vāyubhakṣaḥ samāhitaḥ

With her leave granted, he went to the Himalaya mountain, and there, subsisting on air alone and deeply concentrated, undertook a most difficult austerity.

Verse 53 (shiva.vayaviya.34.53)

aṣṭeṣṭakābhiḥ prāsādaṁ kṛtvā liṅgaṁ ca mṛṇmayam | tatrāvāhya mahādevaṁ sāmbaṁ sagaṇamavyayam

Building a small shrine of eight bricks and setting up a linga of clay, and invoking there the imperishable Mahadeva, together with Amba and his hosts —

Verse 54 (shiva.vayaviya.34.54)

bhaktyā pañcākṣareṇaiva putraiḥ puṣpairvanodbhavaiḥ | samabhyarcya ciraṁ kālaṁ cacāra paramaṁ tapaḥ

worshipping there devotedly with the five-syllabled mantra and with leaves and flowers gathered from the forest, he practised the most supreme austerity for a long time.

Verse 55 (shiva.vayaviya.34.55)

tatastapaścarattaṁ taṁ bālamekākinaṁ kṛśam | upamanyuṁ dvijavaraṁ śivasaṁsaktamānasam

Then, seeing that solitary, emaciated child — Upamanyu, foremost of brahmins, his mind wholly absorbed in Shiva — performing his austerity —

Verse 56 (shiva.vayaviya.34.56)

purā marīcinā śaptāḥ kecinmunipiśācakāḥ | sampīḍya rākṣasairbhāvaistapaso vighnamācaran

certain sage-turned-demons, once cursed long ago by Marichi, began to torment him in fiendish guises and to obstruct his austerity.

Verse 57 (shiva.vayaviya.34.57)

sa ca taiḥ pīḍyamāno'pi tapaḥ kurvankathañcana | sadā namaḥ śivāyeti krośati smārtanādavat

Even while tormented by them, he somehow persisted in his austerity, crying out again and again, "namaḥ śivāya," even amid cries of pain, like one in anguish.

Verse 58 (shiva.vayaviya.34.58)

tannādaśravaṇādeva tapaso vighnakāriṇaḥ | te taṁ bālaṁ samutsṛjya munayaḥ samupācaran

On hearing that very cry alone, those sage-demons who had been obstructing his austerity let the child be, and thereafter approached him with reverence.

Verse 59 (shiva.vayaviya.34.59)

tapasā tasya viprasya copamanyormahātmanaḥ | carācaraṁ ca munayaḥ pradīpitamabhūjjagat

O sages, by the austerity of that great-souled brahmin Upamanyu, the entire universe of moving and unmoving beings blazed forth with light.
