Vayaviya Samhita · Chapter 43
Vyasa's Incarnation in the Knowledge of Shiva's Nature
Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.43.1)
kṛṣṇa uvāca | bhagavan śrotumicchāmi śivena paribhāṣitam | vedasāraṁ śivajñānaṁ svāśritānāṁ vimuktaye
Krishna said: O Lord, I wish to hear that Shiva-knowledge, the very essence of the Vedas, spoken by Shiva himself for the liberation of those who take refuge in him.
Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.43.2)
abhaktānāmabuddhīnāmayuktānāmagocaram | arthairdaśardhaiḥ saṁyuktaṁ gūḍhamaprājñaninditam
— that knowledge which lies beyond the reach of non-devotees, the unwise, and the unrestrained, joined with its ten meanings, profound, and censured by the ignorant —
Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.43.3)
varṇāśramakṛtairdharmairviparītaṁ kvacitsamam | vedāt ṣaḍaṅgāduddhṛtya sāṅkhyādyogācca kṛtsnaśaḥ
— that knowledge which, at points, runs counter to the duties of caste and life-stage, and at points aligns with them; drawn out in its entirety from the Veda with its six auxiliary sciences, and from Sankhya and Yoga as well —
Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.43.4)
śatakoṭipramāṇena vistīrṇaṁ granthasaṅkhyayā | kathitaṁ parameśena tatra pūjā kathaṁ prabhoḥ
— that knowledge which extends to a hundred crore verses in its full extent, and was spoken by the Supreme Lord — within it, how is the worship of the Lord performed?
Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.43.5)
kasyādhikāraḥ pūjādau jñānayogādayaḥ katham | tatsarvaṁ vistarādeva vaktumarhasi suvrata
Who has the qualification for worship and the rest? How do knowledge, yoga, and the other paths proceed? O one of excellent vows, you alone are fit to tell all of this in full.
Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.43.6)
upamanyuruvāca | śaivaṁ saṅkṣipya vedoktaṁ śivena paribhāṣitam | stutinindādirahitaṁ sadyaḥ pratyayakārakam
Upamanyu said: I shall tell, in brief summary, that Shaiva doctrine, taught in the Veda and expounded by Shiva himself — free of both praise and blame, and one that produces immediate conviction.
Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.43.7)
guruprasādajaṁ divyamanāyāsena muktidam | kathayiṣye samāsena tasya śakyo na vistaraḥ
It arises from the teacher's grace, is divine, and grants liberation without effort; I shall tell it briefly, for its full extent is not possible to convey.
Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.43.8)
sisṛkṣayā purāvyaktācchivaḥ sthāṇurmaheśvaraḥ | satkāryakāraṇopetaḥ svayamāvirabhūtprabhuḥ
Long ago, out of the desire to create, from the Unmanifest, the motionless Great Lord Shiva, the Lord, endowed with true effect and cause, manifested himself directly.
Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.43.9)
janayāmāsa ca tadā ṛṣirviśvādhikaḥ prabhuḥ | devānāṁ prathamaṁ devaṁ brahmāṇaṁ brahmaṇaspatim
Then that seer, the Lord surpassing the universe itself, brought forth Brahma, the very first among the gods, the Lord of sacred speech.
Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.43.10)
brahmāpi pitaraṁ devaṁ jāyamānaṁ nyavaikṣata | taṁ jāyamānaṁ janako devaḥ prāpaśyadājñayā
Brahma too, at the very moment of his own coming into being, beheld his divine father; and that God who begot him, Shiva, likewise beheld Brahma being born, through his own command.
Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.43.11)
dṛṣṭo rudreṇa devo'sāvasṛjadviśvamīśvaraḥ | varṇāśramavyavasthāṁ ca cakāra sa pṛthak pṛthak
Having been thus beheld by Rudra, that God, the Lord, created the universe, and he also established, each in its own proper order, the arrangement of caste and stage of life.
Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.43.12)
somaṁ sasarja yajñārthe somād ghauḥ samajāyata | dharā ca vahniḥ sūryaśca yajño viṣṇuḥ śacīpatiḥ
For the sake of the sacrifice he created Soma, and from Soma the cow was born; the earth, fire, the sun, the sacrifice, Vishnu, and the lord of Shachi were likewise brought forth.
Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.43.13)
te cānye ca surā rudraṁ rudrādhyāyena tuṣṭuvuḥ | prasannavadanastasthau devānāmagrataḥ prabhuḥ
They, and the other gods besides, praised Rudra with the Rudra-hymn; and that Lord, his countenance gracious, stood before the gods.
Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.43.14)
apahṛtya svalīlārthaṁ teṣāṁ jñānaṁ maheśvaraḥ | tamapṛcchaṁstato devāḥ ko bhavāniti mohitāḥ
Then, for the sake of his own divine play, Maheshvara took away their power of recognition; and the gods, thus bewildered, asked him: "Who are you?"
Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.43.15)
so'bravīdbhagavān rudro hyahamekaḥ purātanaḥ | āsaṁ prathamamevāhaṁ vartāmi ca surottamāḥ
Lord Rudra said: O foremost of gods, I alone am the one, the primeval one; I alone existed first of all, and I alone continue to exist now.
Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.43.16)
bhaviṣyāmi ca matto'nyo vyatirikto na kaścana | ahameva jagat sarvaṁ tarpayāmi svatejasā
And I alone shall exist in the future as well; there is nothing at all distinct or separate from me; I alone, by my own splendor, nourish and satisfy this entire universe.
Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.43.17)
There is none greater than I, and none my equal; whoever knows me is liberated — having said this, Lord Rudra vanished then and there.
Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.43.18)
apaśyantastamīśānaṁ stuvantaścaiva sāmabhiḥ | vrataṁ pāśupataṁ kṛtvā tvatharvaśirasi sthitam
No longer beholding that Ishana, yet praising him still with the Sama hymns, and undertaking the Pashupata vow enjoined in the Atharvashiras —
Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.43.19)
bhasmasañchannasarvāṅgā babhūvuramarāstadā | atha teṣāṁ prasādārthaṁ paśūnāṁ patirīśvaraḥ
— the immortals then covered their entire bodies with sacred ash; and then, for their sake, in order to bestow his grace, that Lord of creatures, the sovereign —
Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.43.20)
sagaṇaścomayā sārdhaṁ sānnidhyamakarotprabhuḥ | yaṁ vinidrā jitaśvāsā yogino dagdhakilbiṣāḥ
— that Lord, together with his hosts and with Uma, granted them his presence — he whom sleepless yogis, having mastered the breath and burned away their sins —
Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.43.21)
hṛdi paśyanti taṁ devaṁ dadṛśurdevapuṅgavāḥ | yāmāhuḥ paramāṁ śaktimīśvarecchānuvartinīm
— behold within their hearts — that God, those foremost of gods now likewise beheld; and they beheld too that supreme Shakti, ever following the will of the Lord —
Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.43.22)
tāmapaśyan maheśasya vāmato vāmalocanām | ye vinirdhūtasaṁsārāḥ prāptāḥ śaivaṁ paraṁ padam
— that lovely-eyed Goddess, seated at Mahesha's left, was beheld by them, they who, wholly cleansed of transmigratory existence, had attained the supreme Shaiva state.
Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.43.23)
nityasiddhāśca ye vānye te ca dṛṣṭā gaṇeśvarāḥ | atha taṁ tuṣṭuvurdevā devyā saha maheśvaram
And the other eternally perfected lords of the ganas, too, were seen there; then the gods offered praise to Maheshvara, together with the Goddess.
Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.43.24)
stotrairmāheśvarairdivyaiḥ śrotaiḥ paurāṇikairapi | devo'pi devānālokya ghṛṇayā vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ
With divine Maheshvara hymns, and with Puranic recitations as well, they offered praise; and the bull-bannered God, too, looked upon the gods with compassion.
Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.43.25)
tuṣṭo'smītyāha suprītaḥ svabhāvamadhurāṁ giram | atha suprītamanasaṁ praṇipatya vṛṣadhvajam | arthamahattamaṁ devāḥ papracchurimamādarāt
Greatly pleased, he spoke in his own naturally sweet voice, saying, "I am well pleased." Then, bowing to that gladdened, bull-bannered God, the gods respectfully asked this most weighty question.
Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.43.26)
devā ūcuḥ | bhagavan kena mārgeṇa pūjanīyo'si bhūtale | kasyādhikāraḥ pūjāyāṁ vaktumarhasi tattvataḥ
The gods said: O Lord, by what path are you to be worshipped here on earth? Who has the qualification for that worship? Be pleased to tell us this in its true nature.
Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.43.27)
tataḥ sasmitamālokya devīṁ devavaro haraḥ | svarūpaṁ darśayāmāsa ghoraṁ sūryātmakaṁ param
Then, smiling and glancing at the Goddess, Hara, foremost of gods, revealed his own terrible and supreme form, of the very nature of the sun.
Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.43.28)
sarvaiśvaryaguṇopetaṁ sarvatejomayaṁ param | śaktibhirmūrtibhiścāṅgairgrahairdevaiśca saṁvṛtam
That supreme form was possessed of every attribute of sovereignty, wholly made of splendor, and surrounded by his Shaktis, his forms, his limbs, the planets, and the gods.
Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.43.29)
aṣṭabāhuṁ caturvaktramarddhanārīkamadbhutam | dṛṣṭvaivamadbhutākāraṁ devā viṣṇupurogamāḥ
Eight-armed, four-faced, and of the astonishing form of Ardhanarishvara, half-man half-woman — beholding this wondrous shape, the gods, with Vishnu at their head —
Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.43.30)
buddhvā divākaraṁ devaṁ devīṁ caiva niśākaram | pañcabhūtāni śeṣāṇi tanmayaṁ ca carācaram
— recognizing that God as the sun, and the Goddess as the moon, and the remaining five elements, and the whole universe of moving and unmoving things, as likewise made of that same substance —
Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.43.31)
evamuktvā namaścakrustasmai cārghyaṁ pradāya vai
— having spoken thus, they bowed to him, and offered him arghya as well.
Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.43.32)
sindūravarṇāya sumaṇḍalāya suvarṇavarṇābharaṇāya tubhyam | padmābhanetrāya sapaṅkajāya brahmendranārāyaṇakāraṇāya
"To you, vermilion-hued, of beautiful orb, adorned with golden ornaments, lotus-eyed, holding the lotus, the very cause of Brahma, Indra, and Narayana —
Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.43.33)
suratnapūrṇaṁ sasuvarṇatoyaṁ sukuṅkumādyaṁ sakuśaṁ sapuṣpam | pradattamādāya sahemapātraṁ praśastamarghyaṁ bhagavan prasīda
taking this excellent arghya, filled with fine gems, with water mixed with gold, with kumkum and the like, together with kusha grass and flowers, offered in a golden vessel — O Lord, be gracious."
Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.43.34)
namaḥ śivāya śāntāya sagaṇāyādihetave | rudrāya viṣṇave tubhyaṁ brahmaṇe sūryamūrtaye
Homage to Shiva, the tranquil one, the primal cause together with his hosts, to Rudra, to Vishnu, to you as Brahma, in your very form as the sun.
Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.43.35)
yaḥ śivaṁ maṇḍale saure sampūjyaiva samāhitaḥ | prātarmadhyāhnasāyāhne pradadyādarghyamuttamam
Whoever, worshipping Shiva rightly within the orb of the sun, with a mind wholly composed, offers the excellent arghya at morning, midday, and evening —
Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.43.36)
praṇamedvā paṭhedetān śalokān śrutimukhānimān | na tasya durllabhaṁ kiñcidbhaktaścenmucyate dṛḍham
— or whoever bows and recites these verses, drawn from the very mouth of the Shruti — if he is a devotee of firm resolve, nothing remains beyond his reach, and he is surely liberated.
Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.43.37)
tasmādabhyarcayenityaṁ śivamādityarūpiṇam | dharmakāmārthamuktyarthaṁ manasā karmaṇā girā
Therefore, for the attainment of dharma, desire, wealth, and liberation, one should worship, daily, with mind, deed, and word, Shiva in his form as the sun.
Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.43.38)
atha devān samālokya maṇḍalastho maheśvaraḥ | sarvāgamottaraṁ dattvā śāstramantaradhāddharaḥ
Then, gazing upon the gods, Maheshvara Hara, seated within the solar orb, having bestowed that scripture, the supreme among all the Agamas, vanished from sight.
Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.43.39)
tatra pūjādhikāro'yaṁ brahmakṣatraviśāmiti | jñātvā praṇamya deveśaṁ devā jagmuryathāgatam
Understanding thus that "the qualification for this worship belongs to the brahmin, the kshatriya, and the vaishya," the gods bowed to the Lord of the gods and returned, just as they had come.
Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.43.40)
atha kālena mahatā tasmin śāstre tirohite | bhartāraṁ paripapraccha tadaṅkasthā maheśvarī
Then, after a great span of time had passed, when that scripture had become lost, Maheshvari, seated in her husband's lap, questioned him.
Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.43.41)
tayā sañcodito devo devyā candravibhūṣaṇaḥ | avadatkaramuddhṛtya śāstraṁ sarvāgamottaram
Thus urged by the Goddess, the God adorned with the moon, raising his hand, once more declared that scripture, supreme among all the Agamas.
Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.43.42)
pravartitaṁ ca talloke niyogātparameṣṭhinaḥ | mayāgastyena guruṇā dadhīcena maharṣiṇā
It was propagated in that world, by the command of the Lord who stands supreme, by me, by the teacher Agastya, by the great sage Dadhichi —
Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.43.43)
svayamapyavatīryorvyāṁ yugāvarteṣu śūladhṛk | svāśritānāṁ vimuktyarthaṁ kurute jñānasantatim
— and the wielder of the trident himself, too, in the recurring cycles of the ages, descends to the earth and maintains an unbroken succession of this knowledge, for the liberation of those who take refuge in him.
Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.43.44)
ṛbhuḥ satyo bhārgavaśca hyaṅgirāḥ savitā dvijāḥ | mṛtyuḥ śatakraturdhīmān vasiṣṭho munipuṅgavaḥ
Ribhu, Satya, Bhargava, Angiras, Savita, Dvija, Mrityu, the wise Shatakratu, Vasishtha foremost among sages —
Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.43.45)
sārasvatastridhāmā ca trivṛto munipuṅgavaḥ | śatatejāḥ svayaṁ dharmo nārāyaṇa iti śrutaḥ
Sarasvata, Tridhama, Trivrita foremost among sages, Shatateja, Dharma himself, and he known by the name Narayana —
Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.43.46)
svarakṣaścāruṇirdhīmāṁstathā caiva kṛtañjayaḥ | māmateyo bharadvājo gautamaḥ kaviruttamaḥ
Svaraksha, the wise Aruni, and likewise Kritanjaya, the son of Mamata, Bharadvaja, Gautama, the excellent poet —
Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.43.47)
vācaḥsravā munissākṣāttathā sūkṣmāyaṇiḥ śuciḥ | tṛṇabindurmuniḥ kṛṣṇaḥ śaktiḥ śākteya uttaraḥ
the sage Vachahshrava directly, and pure Sukshmayani, the sage Trinabindu, Krishna, Shakti, Shakteya, and Uttara —
Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.43.48)
jātūkarṇyo hariḥ sākṣāt kṛṣṇadvaipāyano muniḥ | vyāsāvatārān śṛṇvantu kalpayogeśvarān kramāt
Jatukarnya, Hari himself, and the sage Krishna Dvaipayana — hear now, in order, these Vyasa-incarnations, lords of yoga across the successive kalpas.
Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.43.49)
laiṅge vyāsāvatārā hi dvāparānteṣu suvratāḥ | yogācāryāvatārāśca tathā śiṣyeṣu śūlinaḥ
These Vyasa-incarnations, spoken of in the Linga Purana, of excellent vows, appear at the end of each Dvapara age; and the incarnations of the wielder of the trident as a teacher of yoga likewise appear among their disciples.
Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.43.50)
tatra tatra vibhoḥ śiṣyāścatvāraḥ syurmahaujasaḥ | śiṣyāsteṣāṁ praśiṣyāśca śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ
In each such instance, that mighty Lord has four disciples of great splendor; and their disciples, and their disciples' disciples, number in the hundreds and thousands.
Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.43.51)
teṣāṁ sambhāvanālloke śaivājñākaraṇādibhiḥ | bhāgyavanto vimucyante bhaktyā cātyantabhāvitāḥ
Through honoring them, through obeying the Shaiva commandments and the like, and through being deeply steeped in devotion, fortunate people in this world attain liberation.
