Vayaviya Samhita · Chapter 53
The Rite of Initiation into Shiva
Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.53.1)
upamanyuruvāca | tataḥ snānādikaṃ sarvaṃ samāpyācāryacoditaḥ | gacchedbaddhāñjalirdhyāyan śivamaṇḍalapārśvataḥ
Upamanyu said: Then, having completed the bath and everything else, directed by the teacher, the disciple should go, with joined palms and meditating on Shiva, to the side of the maṇḍala.
Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.53.2)
atha pūjāṃ vinā sarvaṃ kṛtvā pūrvadine yathā | netrabandhanaparyantaṃ darśayet maṇḍalaṃ guruḥ
Then, having done everything as on the previous day except the worship, the guru should show the maṇḍala to the disciple up to the point of binding his eyes.
Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.53.3)
baddhanetreṇa śiṣyeṇa puṣpāvakiraṇe kṛte | yatrāpatanti puṣpāṇi tasya nāmā'sya sandiśet
When the blindfolded disciple has cast the flowers, wherever they fall, he should announce to him the name of that tattva.
Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.53.4)
taṃ copanīya nirmālyamaṇḍale'sminyathā purā | pūjayeddevamīśānaṃ juhuyācca śivānale
Having led him, as before, to that spot on the maṇḍala marked by the fallen flowers, he should worship the god Īśāna and make oblation in the fire of Shiva.
Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.53.5)
śiṣyeṇa yadi duḥsvapno dṛṣṭastaddoṣaśāntaye | śatamarddhaṃ tadarddhaṃ vā juhuyānmūlavidyayā
If the disciple has seen an ill-omened dream, to pacify that fault he should offer a hundred oblations with the root mantra, or half of that, or half again.
Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.53.6)
tataḥ sūtraṃ śikhābaddhaṃ lambayitvā yathā purā | ādhārapūjāprabhṛti yannivṛttikalāśrayam
Then, letting the thread bound to the crown-lock hang down as before, he should perform the worship of the supports and the rest, resting upon the Nivṛtti kalā.
Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.53.7)
vāgīśvarīpūjanāntaṃ kuryāddhomapuraḥsaram | atha praṇamya vāgīśaṃ nivṛttervyāpikāṃ satīm
This should be done, preceded by fire-oblation, up to the worship of Vāgīśvarī. Then, having bowed to Vāgīśa, the true pervader of Nivṛtti kalā —
Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.53.8)
maṇḍale devamabhyarcya hutvā caivāhutitrayam | prāpayecca śiśoḥ prāptiṃ yugapatsarvayoniṣu
having worshipped the god in the maṇḍala and offered a triple oblation, he should cause the disciple to attain, all at once, entry into every womb.
Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.53.9)
sūtradehe'tha śiṣyasya tāḍanaprokṣaṇādikam | kṛtvātmānaṃ samādāya dvādaśānte nivedya ca
Then, having touched and sprinkled the thread and the disciple's body, and drawn out his self, and offered it at the Dvādaśānta —
Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.53.10)
tato'pyādāya mūlena mudrayā śāstradṛṣṭayā | yojayenmanasācāryo yugapatsarvayoniṣu
then, taking it up with the scripture-prescribed mudrā by the root mantra, the teacher should, in his mind, unite it all at once with every womb.
Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.53.11)
devānāṃ jātayaścāṣṭau tiraścāṃ pañca jātayaḥ | jātyaikayā ca mānuṣyā yonayaśca caturdaśa
The eight classes of gods, the five classes of animals, and the human class, one alone — the wombs are fourteen in all.
Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.53.12)
tāsu sarvāsu yugapatpraveśāya śiśorddhiyā | vāgīśānyāṃ yathānyāyaṃ śiṣyātmānaṃ niveśayet
Contemplating the disciple's entry into all of these at once, he should, in due manner, place the disciple's self within Vāgīśānī.
Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.53.13)
garbhaniṣpattaye devaṃ sampūjya praṇipatya ca | hutvā caiva yathānyāyaṃ niṣpannaṃ tadanusmaret
For the accomplishment of the embryo, having worshipped and bowed to the god and duly made oblation, he should call to mind that it is now accomplished.
Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.53.14)
niṣpannasyaivamutpattimanuvṛttiṃ ca karmaṇā | ārjavaṃ bhoganiṣpattiḥ kuryāt prītiṃ parāṃ tathā
Thus he should bring about, through ritual action, the birth of the one so accomplished, its continuance, uprightness, the accomplishment of experience, and supreme delight.
Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.53.15)
niṣkṛtyarthaṃ ca jātyāyurbhogasaṃskārasiddhaye | hutvāhutitrayaṃ devaṃ prārthayeddeśikottamaḥ
For atonement, and for the accomplishment of birth, lifespan, experience and consecration, the best of teachers, having offered a triple oblation, should pray to the god.
Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.53.16)
bhoktṛtvaviṣayāsaṅgamalaṃ tatkāyaśodhanam | kṛtvaivameva śiṣyasya chindyātpāśatrayaṃ tataḥ
Having thus purified the body of the impurity of attachment to enjoyer-hood and its objects, he should then cut the disciple's threefold bond.
Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.53.17)
nikṛtyā paribaddhasya pāśasyātyantabhedataḥ | kṛtvā śiṣyasya caitanyaṃ svacchaṃ manyeta kevalam
Having, by this severance, utterly cut away the bond that bound him, he should consider the disciple's consciousness to be pure and isolated.
Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.53.18)
hutvā pūrṇāhutiṃ vahnau brahmāṇaṃ pūjayettataḥ | hutvāhutitrayaṃ tasmai śivājñāmanusandiśet
Having offered the full oblation in the fire, he should worship Brahmā, and, offering him a triple oblation, convey to him the command of Shiva —
Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.53.19)
pitāmaha tvayā nāsya yātuḥ śaivaṃ paraṃ padam | pratibandho vidhātavyaḥ śaivājñaiṣā garīyasī
'O Grandsire, no obstacle is to be placed by you in the way of this one going to the supreme station of Shiva — this is the weighty command of Shiva.'
Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.53.20)
ityādiśya tamabhyarcya visṛja ca vidhānataḥ | samabhyarcya mahādevaṃ juhuyādāhutitrayam
Having thus instructed and worshipped him, he should dismiss him according to rule; then, having duly worshipped Mahādeva, he should offer a triple oblation.
Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.53.21)
nivṛttyā śuddhamuddhṛtya śiṣyātmānaṃ yathā purā | niveśyātmani sūtre ca vāgīśaṃ pūjayettataḥ
Having, as before, drawn up the disciple's self purified by Nivṛtti, and placed it in himself and in the thread, he should then worship Vāgīśa.
Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.53.22)
hutvāhutitrayaṃ tasmai praṇamya ca visṛjya tām | kuryānnivṛttaḥ sandhānaṃ pratiṣṭhāṃ kalayā saha
Having offered him a triple oblation, bowed, and dismissed her, now withdrawn from Nivṛtti, he should make the junction with the Pratiṣṭhā kalā.
Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.53.23)
sandhāne yugapatpūjāṃ kṛtvā hutvāhutitrayam | śiṣyātmanaḥ pratiṣṭhāyāṃ praveśaṃ tvatha bhāvayet
At the junction, having performed the worship all at once and offered a triple oblation, he should then contemplate the disciple's self entering into Pratiṣṭhā.
Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.53.24)
tataḥ pratiṣṭhāmāvāhya kṛtvāśeṣaṃ puroditam | tadvyāptiṃ vyāpikāṃ tasya vāgīśānīṃ ca bhāvayet
Then, having invoked Pratiṣṭhā and done all as stated before, he should contemplate its pervasion and its pervader, Vāgīśānī.
Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.53.25)
pūrṇendumaṇḍalaprakhyāṃ kṛtvā śeṣaṃ ca pūrvavat | viṣṇave saṃviśedājñāṃ śivasya paramātmanaḥ
Contemplating her as resembling the orb of the full moon, and doing the rest as before, he should convey to Viṣṇu the command of Shiva, the supreme Self.
Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.53.26)
viṣṇorvisarjanādyaṃ ca kṛtvā śeṣaṃ ca vidyayā | pratiṣṭhāmanusandhāya tasyāṃ cāpi yathā purā
Having performed the dismissal of Viṣṇu and the rest, and, by the mantra, made the junction with Pratiṣṭhā, and entered within her also, as before —
Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.53.27)
kṛtvānucintya tadvyāptiṃ vāgīśāṃ ca yathākramam | dīptāgnau pūrṇahomāntaṃ kṛtvā śeṣaṃ ca pūrvavat
having duly contemplated its pervasion and Vāgīśā, and, in the blazing fire, performed everything up to the full oblation, and the rest as before —
Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.53.28)
nīlarudramupasthāpya tasmai pūjādikaṃ tathā | kṛtvā karma śivājñāṃ ca dadyātpūrvoktavartmanā
having invoked Nīlarudra and performed for him the worship and the dismissal-rite, he should give the command of Shiva in the manner stated before.
Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.53.29)
tapastamapi codvāsya kṛtvā tasyātha śāntaye | vidyākalāṃ samādhāya tadvyāptiṃ cāvalokayet
Having likewise sent forth that deity of austerity, and, for his pacification, settled him in the Vidyā kalā, he should observe its pervasion.
Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.53.30)
svātmano vyāpikāṃ tadvadvāgīśīṃ ca yathā purā | bālārkasadṛśākārāṃ bhāsayantīṃ diśo daśa
He should likewise contemplate Vāgīśī, the pervader of his own self, as before — of a form like the rising sun, illumining the ten directions.
Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.53.31)
tataḥ śeṣaṃ yathāpūrvaṃ kṛtvā devaṃ maheśvaram | āvāhyārādhya hutvāsmai śivājñāṃ manasā diśet
Then, having done the rest as before, and invoked and worshipped the god Maheśvara and made oblation, he should mentally convey to him the command of Shiva.
Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.53.32)
maheśvaraṃ tathotsṛjya kṛtvānyāṃ ca kalāmimām | śāntyatītāṃ kalāṃ nītvā tadvyāptimavalokayet
Having likewise dismissed Maheśvara, and performed the rite for this next kalā, leading the self on to the kalā Śāntyatītā, he should observe its pervasion.
Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.53.33)
svātmano vyāpikāṃ tadvadvāgīśīṃ ca vicintayet | nabhomaṇḍalasaṅkāśāṃ pūrṇāntaṃ cāpi pūrvavat
He should likewise contemplate Vāgīśī, the pervader of his own self, as resembling the orb of the sky, and do the rest up to the full oblation, as before.
Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.53.34)
kṛtvā śeṣavidhānena samabhyarcya sadāśivam | tasmai samādiśedājñāṃ śambhoramitakarmaṇaḥ
Having, by the remaining procedure, duly worshipped Sadāśiva, he should convey to him the command of Shambhu, whose acts are boundless.
Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.53.35)
tatrāpi ca yathāpūrvaṃ śivaṃ śirasi pūrvavat | samabhyarcya ca vāgīśaṃ praṇamya ca visarjayet
There too, placing Shiva upon the head as before, having duly worshipped Vāgīśa and bowed, he should dismiss him.
Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.53.36)
tataḥ śivena samprokṣya śiṣyaṃ śirasi pūrvavat | vilayaṃ śāntyatītāyāḥ śaktitattve'tha cintayet
Then, having sprinkled the disciple's head with the mantra of Shiva as before, he should contemplate the dissolution of Śāntyatītā into the principle of Śakti.
Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.53.37)
ṣaḍadhvanaḥ pare pāre sarvādhvavyāpinīṃ parām | koṭisūryapratīkāśāṃ śaivīṃ śaktiṃ ca cintayet
He should contemplate the supreme Śaivī Śakti, beyond the farther shore of the six paths, pervading all the paths, radiant as ten million suns.
Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.53.38)
tadagre śiṣyamānīya śuddhasphaṭikanirmalam | prakṣālya karttarīṃ paścāt śivaśāstroktamārgataḥ
Having brought the disciple before it, and washed a pair of scissors pure and clear as crystal, according to the manner taught in the scripture of Shiva —
Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.53.39)
kuryāttasya śikhācchedaṃ saha sūtreṇa deśikaḥ | tatastāṃ gomaye nyasya śivāgnau juhuyācchikhām
the teacher should cut off his crown-lock together with the sacred thread; then, having placed it upon cow-dung, he should offer the lock in oblation in the fire of Shiva.
Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.53.40)
vauṣaḍantena mūlena punaḥ prakṣālya kartarīm | haste śiṣyasya caitanyaṃ taddehe vinivartayet
Having again washed the scissors with the root mantra ending in Vauṣaṭ, he should, by touching the disciple's hand, cause his consciousness to return into that body.
Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.53.41)
tataḥ snātaṃ samācāntaṃ kṛtasvastyayanaṃ śiśum | praveśya maṇḍalābhyāsaṃ praṇipatya ca daṇḍavat
Then, the disciple having bathed, sipped water, and had the benediction rite performed for him, he should be led into the vicinity of the maṇḍala; and, having made him prostrate flat upon the ground —
Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.53.42)
pūjāṃ kṛtvā yathānyāyaṃ kriyāvaikalyaśuddhaye | vācakenaiva mantreṇa juhuyādāhutitrayam
having duly performed worship, for the purification of any defect in the ritual act, with the mantra recited aloud, he should offer a triple oblation.
Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.53.43)
upāṃśūccārayogena juhuyādāhutitrayam | punaḥ sampūjya deveśaṃ mantravaikalyaśuddhaye
With the mantra recited in a murmur, he should offer a triple oblation; then, having again worshipped the Lord of gods, for the purification of any defect in the mantra —
Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.53.44)
mānasoccārayogena juhuyādāhutitrayam | tatra śambhuṃ samārādhya maṇḍalasthaṃ sahāmbayā | hutvāhutitrayaṃ paścātprārthayetprāñjalirguruḥ
with the mantra recited mentally, he should offer a triple oblation. Then, having worshipped Shambhu, present in the maṇḍala together with the Mother, and offered a triple oblation, the guru, with joined palms, should pray —
Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.53.45)
bhagavaṃstvatprasādena śuddhirasya ṣaḍadhvanaḥ | kṛtā tasmātparaṃ dhāma gamayainaṃ tavāvyayam
'O Lord, by your grace the purification of the six paths has been accomplished for this one; therefore lead him to your supreme, imperishable abode.'
Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.53.46)
pūrṇāntaṃ pūrvavatkṛtvā tato bhūtāni śodhayet
Having, as before, performed everything up to the full oblation, he should then purify the five elements.
Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.53.47)
sthirāsthire tataḥ śuddhyai śītoṣṇe ca tataḥ pade | dhyāyedvyāptyaikatākāre bhūtaśodhanakarmaṇi
Then, for the purification of the fixed and the moving, and of heat and cold, he should meditate, in the rite of purifying the elements, upon the single form of their pervasion.
Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.53.48)
bhūtānāṃ granthivicchedaṃ kṛtvā tyaktvā sahādhipaiḥ | bhūtāni sthitiyogena yo japetparame śive
Having severed the knot of the elements and cast them away together with their presiding lords, he who, through steadfast concentration, recites the mantra fixed upon the supreme Shiva —
Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.53.49)
viśodhyāsyaṃ tanuṃ dagdhvā plāvayitvā sudhākaṇaiḥ | sthāpyātmānaṃ tataḥ kuryādviśuddhādhvamayaṃ vapuḥ
having thus purified, burned this body and flooded it with drops of nectar, and established the self, he should then fashion a body wholly made of the purified path.
Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.53.50)
tatrādau śāntyatītāṃ tu vyāpikāṃ svādhvanaḥ kalām | śuddhāmeva śiśormūrdhni nyasecchāntimukhe tathā
There, first, he should place the pure Śāntyatītā kalā, the pervader of his own path, upon the crown of the disciple's head, and likewise the Śāntā kalā at the face.
Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.53.51)
vidyāṃ galādinābhyantaṃ pratiṣṭhāṃ tadadhaḥ kramāt | jānvantaṃ tadadho nyasyennivṛttiṃ cānucintayet
Vidyā he should place from the throat down to the navel; below that, in due order, Pratiṣṭhā down to the knee; below that Nivṛtti, and duly meditate upon it.
Verse 52 (shiva.vayaviya.53.52)
svabījaiḥ sūtramantraṃ ca nyasyāṅgaistaṃ śivātmakam | buddhvā taṃ hṛdayāmbhoje devamāvāhya pūjayet
Having placed the thread-mantra, of the nature of Shiva, together with its limbs, by their own seed-syllables, he should invoke the god in the lotus of the heart and worship him.
Verse 53 (shiva.vayaviya.53.53)
āśāsya nityasānnidhyaṃ śivasvātmyaṃ śiśau guruḥ | śivatejomayasyāsya śiśorāpādayedguṇān
Praying for his eternal presence and for the disciple's identity of self with Shiva, the guru should confer the divine qualities upon this disciple, now made of the very radiance of Shiva.
Verse 54 (shiva.vayaviya.53.54)
aṇimādīnprasīdeti pradadyādāhutitrayam | tathaiva tu guṇāneva punarasyopapādayet
Praying 'may the powers beginning with aṇimā be gracious to him,' he should offer a triple oblation, and in the same way again confer the remaining qualities upon him.
Verse 55 (shiva.vayaviya.53.55)
sarvajñatāṃ tathā tṛptiṃ bodhaṃ cādyantavarjitam | aluptaśaktiṃ svātantryamanantāṃ śaktimeva ca
Namely: omniscience, contentment, awareness free of beginning and end, unimpaired power, sovereign independence, and boundless power itself.
Verse 56 (shiva.vayaviya.53.56)
