Vayaviya Samhita · Chapter 54
The Greatness of the Sadhaka's Sacrament and Mantra
Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.54.1)
upamanyuruvāca | ataḥ paraṃ pravakṣyāmi sādhakaṃ nāma nāmataḥ | saṃskāramantramāhātmyaṃ kathane sūcitaṃ mayā
Upamanyu said: Hereafter I shall declare, in due order, that which is named the sādhaka's rite; the greatness of the sacrament and mantra has already been indicated by me.
Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.54.2)
sampūjya maṇḍale devaṃ sthāpya kumbhe ca pūrvavat | hutvā śiṣyamanuṣṇīṣaṃ prāpayedbhuvi maṇḍale
Having worshipped the god in the maṇḍala, and, as before, established him in the jar, and made oblation, he should bring the disciple, bare-headed, onto the maṇḍala on the ground.
Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.54.3)
pūrṇāntaṃ pūrvavatkṛtvā hutvā''hutiśataṃ tathā | santarpya mūlamantreṇa kalaśairdeśikottamaḥ
Having, as before, performed everything up to the full oblation, and likewise offered a hundred oblations, the best of teachers should satisfy the deity, with the jars, by the root mantra.
Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.54.4)
sandīpya ca yathāpūrvaṃ kṛtvā pūrvoditaṃ kramāt | abhiṣicya yathāpūrvaṃ pradadyānmantramuttamam
And having, as before, performed the kindling rite in the order stated earlier, and, as before, performed the anointing, he should bestow the supreme mantra.
Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.54.5)
tatra vidyopadeśāntaṃ kṛtvā vistaraśaḥ kramāt | puṣpāmbunā śiśoḥ pāṇau vidyāṃ śaivīṃ samarpayet
There, having, in due order, performed at length everything up to the teaching of the mantra, he should place the Shaiva mantra into the disciple's hand together with flowers and water —
Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.54.6)
tavaihikāmuṣmikayoḥ sarvasiddhiphalapradaḥ | bhavatyeva mahāmantraḥ prasādātparameṣṭhinaḥ
'This great mantra becomes, for you, the bestower of the fruit of every success, in this world and the next, by the grace of the Supreme Lord.'
Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.54.7)
ityutvā devamabhyarcya labdhānujñaḥ śivādguruḥ | sādhanaṃ śivayogaṃ ca sādhakāya samādiśet
Having thus spoken and worshipped the god, the guru, having obtained permission from Shiva, should instruct the sādhaka in the practice and the yoga of Shiva.
Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.54.8)
tacchrutvā gurusandeśaṃ kramaśo mantrasādhakaḥ | purato viniyogasya mantrasādhanamācaret
Having heard that message of the guru, the practitioner of the mantra should, in due order, perform the practice of the mantra prior to its ritual employment.
Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.54.9)
sādhanaṃ mūlamantrasya puraścaraṇamucyate | purataścaraṇīyatvādviniyogākhyakarmaṇaḥ
The practice of the root mantra is called puraścaraṇa, because it is to be undertaken before the rite known as ritual employment.
Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.54.10)
nātyantaṃ karaṇīyaṃ tu mumukṣormantrasādhanam | kṛtaṃ tu tadihānyatra tasyāpi śubhadaṃ bhavet
For one who seeks liberation, this practice of the mantra is not absolutely required; but if performed, whether here or elsewhere, it becomes auspicious for him as well.
Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.54.11)
śubhe'hani śubhe deśe kāle vā doṣavarjite | śukladantanakhaḥ snātaḥ kṛtapūrvāhnikakriyaḥ
On an auspicious day, in an auspicious place, or at a time free of fault, his teeth and nails cleaned, bathed, having performed his forenoon rites —
Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.54.12)
alaṅkṛtya yathā labdhairgandhamālyavibhūṣaṇaiḥ | soṣṇīṣaḥ sottarāsaṅgaḥ sarvaśuklasamāhitaḥ
having adorned himself, as available, with fragrance, garlands and ornaments, wearing a turban and an upper garment, composed, clad wholly in white —
Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.54.13)
devālaye gṛhe'nyasmin deśe vā sumanohare | sukhenābhyastapūrveṇa tvāsanena kṛtāsanaḥ
in a temple, or in some other house, or in a delightful place, having taken his seat comfortably upon a seat previously in habitual use —
Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.54.14)
tanuṃ kṛtvātmanaḥ śaivīṃ śivaśāstroktavartmanā | sampūjya devadeveśaṃ nakulīśvaramīśvaram
having made his own body Shaiva according to the way taught in the scripture of Shiva, and having worshipped the God of gods, the Lord Nakulīśvara —
Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.54.15)
nivedya pāyasaṃ tasmai samāpyārādhanaṃ kramāt | praṇipatya ca taṃ devaṃ prāptānujñāśca tanmukhāt
having offered him rice-pudding, and duly completed the worship, and prostrated before that god, and, having obtained his permission from his very presence —
Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.54.16)
koṭivāraṃ tadarddhaṃ vā tadarddhaṃ vā japet śivam | lakṣaviṃśatikaṃ vāpi daśalakṣamathāpi vā
he should recite the mantra of Shiva ten million times, or half of that, or half again, or twenty hundred-thousand times, or else ten hundred-thousand times.
Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.54.17)
tataśca pāyasākṣāralavaṇaikamitāśanaḥ | ahiṃsakaḥ kṣamī śānto dāntaścaiva sadā bhavet
And thereafter, eating only rice-pudding without alkali or salt, in a measured amount, he should ever remain non-violent, forbearing, tranquil, and self-controlled.
Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.54.18)
alābhe pāyasasyāśnanphalamūlādikāni vā | vihitāni śivenaiva viśiṣṭānyuttarottaram
In the absence of rice-pudding, he may eat fruits, roots and the like, foods prescribed by Shiva himself, each in due order more excellent than the last.
Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.54.19)
caruṃ bhakṣyamatho saktukaṇānyāvakameva ca | śākaṃ payo dadhi ghṛtaṃ mūlaṃ phalamathodakam
Sacrificial rice, cooked food, parched-grain flour, grains of wild rice, vegetables, milk, curd, ghee, roots, fruit, and water —
Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.54.20)
abhimantrya ca mantreṇa bhakṣyabhojyādikāni ca | sādhane'smin viśeṣeṇa nityaṃ bhuñjīta vāgyataḥ
having consecrated with the mantra the food to be eaten and the rest, in this practice especially, he should always eat while restraining speech.
Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.54.21)
mantrāṣṭaśatapūtena jalena śucinā vratī | snāyānnadīnadotthena prokṣayedvātha śaktitaḥ
The votary should bathe in pure water sanctified by a hundred and eight recitations of the mantra, arisen from a river or stream, or else sprinkle himself according to his ability.
Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.54.22)
tarpayecca tathā nityaṃ juhuyācca śivānale | saptabhiḥ pañcabhirdravyaistribhirvātha ghṛtena vā
And he should likewise always offer libation, and make oblation in the fire of Shiva, with seven, or five, or three substances, or else with ghee.
Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.54.23)
itthaṃ bhaktyā śivaṃ śaivo yaḥ sādhayati sādhakaḥ | tasyehāmutra duṣprāpaṃ na kiñcidapi vidyate
For the Shaiva practitioner who thus, with devotion, accomplishes the practice of Shiva, there exists nothing at all, here or hereafter, that is hard to attain.
Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.54.24)
athavāharaharmantraṃ japedekāgramānasaḥ | anaśnanneva sāhasraṃ vinā mantrasya sādhanam
Or else, with one-pointed mind, he may recite the mantra day after day, a thousand times, without eating at all, this alone sufficing without the fuller practice of the mantra.
Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.54.25)
na tasya durlabhaṃ kiñcinna tasyāstyaśubhaṃ kvacit | iha vidyāṃ śriyaṃ saukhyaṃ labdhvā muktiṃ ca vindati
For him nothing whatsoever is hard to obtain, nor does any misfortune ever befall him; having attained knowledge, prosperity, and happiness here, he obtains liberation as well.
Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.54.26)
sādhane viniyoge ca nitye naimittike tathā | japejjalairbhasmanā ca snātvā mantreṇa ca kramāt
In practice, in ritual employment, and likewise in daily and occasional rites, having bathed with water and with ash, he should, in due order, recite the mantra —
Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.54.27)
śucirbaddhaśikhaḥ sūtrī sapavitrakarastathā | dhṛtatripuṇḍrarudrākṣo vidyāṃ pañcākṣarīṃ japet
Pure, his crown-lock tied, wearing the sacred thread, his hand furnished with the darbha ring, bearing the triple ash-stripe and rudrākṣa beads, he should recite the five-syllabled mantra.
