The Rite of the Special Consecration

Chapter 54All chaptersChapter 56

Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.55.1)

upamanyuruvāca | athaivaṃ saṃskṛtaṃ śiṣyaṃ kṛtapāśupatavratam | ācāryatve'bhiṣiñceta tadyogatvena cānyathā

Upamanyu said: Now, the disciple thus consecrated, who has performed the Pāśupata vow, should be anointed into the office of teacher (ācāryatva); or otherwise into the yoga befitting him.

Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.55.2)

maṇḍalaṃ pūrvavatkṛttvā sampūjya parameśvaram | sthāpayatpañcakalaśāndikṣu madhye ca pūrvavat

Having, as before, made the maṇḍala and worshipped the Supreme Lord, he should set up five jars in the directions and in the center, as before.

Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.55.3)

nivṛttiṃ purato nyasya pratiṣṭhāṃ paścime ghaṭe | vidyāṃ dakṣiṇataḥ śāntimuttare madhyataḥ parām

Placing Nivṛtti in the jar in front, Pratiṣṭhā in the western jar, Vidyā to the south, Śāntā to the north, and the supreme Śāntyatītā in the center —

Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.55.4)

kṛtvā rakṣādikaṃ tatra baddhvā mudrāṃ ca dhainavīm | abhimantrya ghaṭānhutvā pūrṇāntaṃ ca yathā purā

having there performed the rite of protection and the rest, and formed the Dhenu mudrā, he should consecrate the jars with mantra, and make oblation up to the full oblation, as before.

Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.55.5)

praveśya maṇḍale śiṣyamanuṣṇīṣaṃ ca deśikaḥ | tarpaṇādyaṃ tu mantrāṇāṃ kuryātpūrvāvasānakam

The teacher, having led the bare-headed disciple into the maṇḍala, should perform the libation and the rest of the mantras, up to their conclusion, as before.

Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.55.6)

tataḥ sampūjya deveśamanujñāpya ca pūrvavat | abhiṣekāya taṃ śiṣyamāsanaṃ tvadhirohayet

Then, having worshipped the Lord of gods, and, as before, taken leave of him, he should seat that disciple upon the seat for consecration.

Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.55.7)

sakalīkṛtya taṃ paścātkalāpañcakarūpiṇam | nyastamantratanuṃ baddhvā śivaṃ śiṣyaṃ samarpayet

Having then endowed him with the mantra-body, taking the form of the fivefold kalā, his body invested with the mantras, he should offer up the disciple as Shiva himself.

Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.55.8)

tato nivṛttikumbhādighaṭānuddhṛtya vai kramāt | madhyamāntācchivenaiva śiṣyaṃ tamabhiṣecayat

Then, taking up the jars in due order, beginning with the jar of Nivṛtti and ending with the central one, he should anoint that disciple with the water consecrated by the mantra of Shiva alone.

Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.55.9)

śivahastaṃ samarpyātha śiśoḥ śirasi deśikaḥ | śivabhāvasamāpannaḥ śivācāryaṃ tamādiśet

Then, placing the Shiva-empowered hand upon the disciple's head, the teacher, having himself attained the state of Shiva, should proclaim him a Shiva-teacher.

Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.55.10)

athālaṅkṛtya taṃ devamārādhya śivamaṇḍale | śatamaṣṭottaraṃ hutvā dadyātpūrṇāhutiṃ tataḥ

Then, having adorned that god and worshipped him in the Shiva-maṇḍala, and offered a hundred and eight oblations, he should then give the full oblation.

Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.55.11)

punaḥ sampūjya deveśaṃ praṇamya bhuvi daṇḍavat | śirasyañjalimādhāya śivaṃ vijñāpayedguruḥ

Having again worshipped the Lord of gods, and prostrated flat upon the ground, and placed joined palms upon his head, the guru should submit to Shiva —

Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.55.12)

bhagavaṃstvatprasādena deśiko'yaṃ mayā kṛtaḥ | anugṛhya tvayā deva divyājñāsmai pradīyatām

'O Lord, by your grace this one has been made by me a teacher; graciously, O God, let your divine command be given to him.'

Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.55.13)

evaṃ vijñāpya śiṣyeṇa saha bhūyaḥ praṇamya ca | śivaṃ śivāgamaṃ divyaṃ pūjayet śivavadguruḥ

Having thus submitted his prayer, and bowed again together with the disciple, the guru should worship Shiva and the divine Shiva-scripture as if it were Shiva himself.

Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.55.14)

punaḥ śivamanujñāpya śivajñānasya pustakam | ubhābhyāmatha pāṇibhyāṃ dadyācchiṣyāya deśikaḥ

Having again taken leave of Shiva, the teacher should give the book of Shiva-knowledge into the disciple's hands, with both his own hands.

Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.55.15)

sa tāṃ mūrdhni samādhāya vidyāṃ vidyāsanopari | adhiropya yathānyāyamabhivandya samarcayet

He, having placed it upon his head, should set that scripture upon a seat of scripture, and, duly bowing to it, worship it.

Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.55.16)

atha tasmai gururdadyādrājopakaraṇānyapi | ācāryapadavīṃ prāpto rājyaṃ cāpi yato'rhati

Then the guru should also give him the insignia of royalty; for, having attained the rank of ācārya, he is worthy even of sovereignty.

Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.55.17)

athānuśāsanaṃ kuryātpūrvairācaritaṃ yathā | yathā ca śivaśāstroktaṃ yathā lokeṣu pūjyate

Then he should give him instruction, as was practiced by the ancients, as is taught in the scripture of Shiva, and as is honored among people.

Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.55.18)

śiṣyān parīkṣya yatnena śivaśāstroktalakṣaṇaiḥ | saṃskṛtya ca śivajñānaṃ tebhyo dadyācca deśikaḥ

'Having carefully examined disciples by the marks taught in the scripture of Shiva, and having consecrated them, you should impart to them the knowledge of Shiva' — thus the teacher should instruct.

Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.55.19)

evaṃ sarvamanāyāsaṃ śaucaṃ kṣāntiṃ dayāṃ tathā | aspṛhāmapyasūyāṃ ca yatnena ca vibhāvayet

Thus he should carefully cultivate simplicity, purity, forbearance, compassion, freedom from desire, and freedom from envy.

Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.55.20)

itthamādiśya taṃ śiṣyaṃ śivamudvāsya maṇḍalāt | śivakumbhānalādīṃśca sadasyānapi pūjayet

Having thus instructed that disciple, and taken leave of Shiva from the maṇḍala, he should also honor the jars of Shiva, the fire, and the rest, together with the members of the assembly.

Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.55.21)

yugapadvātha saṃskārān kurvīta sagaṇo guruḥ | tatra trayaṃ dvayaṃ vāpi prayogasyopadiśyate

Or else, the guru, together with his attendants, may perform the sacraments all at once; in that case, either a threefold or a twofold procedure is taught.

Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.55.22)

tadādāveva kalaśānkalpayedadhvaśuddhivat | kṛtvā samayasaṃskāramabhiṣekaṃ vinā'khilam

At the very outset he should arrange the jars as in the purification of the paths, and perform the whole of the samaya sacrament, excepting the consecration —

Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.55.23)

samabhyarcya śivaṃ bhūyaḥ kṛtvā cādhvaviśodhanam | tasmin parisamāpte tu punardevaṃ prapūjayet

and, having again duly worshipped Shiva, and performed the purification of the paths, when that is completed he should again worship the god.

Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.55.24)

hutvā mantraṃ tu santarpya sandīpyāśāsya ceśvaram | samarpya mantraṃ śiṣyasya pāṇau śeṣaṃ samāpayet

Having made oblation, satisfied the deity with the mantra, performed the kindling, and prayed to the Lord, he should place the mantra in the disciple's hand and complete the rest.

Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.55.25)

athavā mantrasaṃskāramanucintyākhilaṃ kramāt | adhvaśuddhiṃ guruḥ kuryādabhiṣekāvasānikam

Or else, having duly considered the whole sacrament of the mantra in order, the guru should perform the purification of the paths, ending with the consecration.

Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.55.26)

tatra yaḥ śāntyatītādikalāsu vihito vidhiḥ | sa sarvo'pi vidhātavyastattvatrayaviśodhane

There, whatever procedure is prescribed for the kalās beginning with Śāntyatītā — all of that is likewise to be performed in the purification of the three tattvas.

Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.55.27)

śivavidyātmatattvākhyaṃ tattvatrayamudāhṛtam | śaktau śivastato vidyāttasyāstvātmā samudbabhau

The three tattvas are declared to be named Shiva, Vidyā, and Ātmā; from Śakti, Shiva arose; then from him, Vidyā; and from her, in turn, the Ātmā.

Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.55.28)

śivena śāntyatītādhvā vyāptastadaparaḥ paraḥ | vidyayā pariśiṣṭo'dhvā hyātmanā nikhilaḥ kramāt

By Shiva, the path of Śāntyatītā is pervaded; the next, higher path, by Vidyā; and the remaining path, in due order, entirely by the Ātmā.

Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.55.29)

durlabhaṃ śāmbhavaṃ matvā mantramūlaṃ manīṣiṇaḥ | śāktaṃ śaṃsīta saṃskāraṃ śivaśāstrārthapāragāḥ

Knowing the Śāmbhava initiation to be hard to attain, the wise, versed in the meaning of the scripture of Shiva, should recommend the Śākta sacrament, whose root is the mantra.

Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.55.30)

cāturvidhyamidaṃ kṛṣṇa kiṃ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi

This, O Kṛṣṇa, is the fourfold scheme of sacraments. What further do you wish to hear?
