Vayaviya Samhita · Chapter 56
Daily and Occasional Rites
Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.56.1)
kṛṣṇa uvāca | bhagavan śrotumicchāmi śivāśramaniṣeviṇām | śivaśāstroditaṃ karma nityanaimittikaṃ tathā
Krishna said: O Lord, I wish to hear of the daily and occasional rites, taught in the scripture of Shiva, observed by those devoted to the Shiva-hermitage.
Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.56.2)
upamanyuruvāca | prātarutthāya śayanāddhyātvā devaṃ sahāmbayā | vicārya kāryaṃ nirgacched gṛhādabhyudite'ruṇe
Upamanyu said: Rising in the morning from his bed, having meditated upon the god together with the Mother, and having considered his duty, he should go forth from the house when the dawn has risen.
Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.56.3)
abādhe vijane deśe kuryādāvaśyakaṃ tataḥ | kṛtvā śaucaṃ vidhānena dantadhāvanamācaret
In an unobstructed, solitary place he should attend to the necessary calls of nature; having duly performed the purification, he should clean his teeth.
Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.56.4)
alābhe dantakāṣṭhānāmaṣṭamyādidineṣu ca | apāṃ dvādaśagaṇḍūṣaiḥ kuryādāsyaviśodhanam
When tooth-twigs are unavailable, or on the eighth lunar day and similar days, he should cleanse the mouth with twelve mouthfuls of water.
Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.56.5)
ācamya vidhivatpaścādvāruṇaṃ snānamācaret | nadyāṃ vā devakhāte vā hrade vātha gṛhe'pi vā
Having then duly sipped water, he should perform the water-bath, whether in a river, a sacred pool, a lake, or even at home.
Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.56.6)
snānadravyāṇi tattīre sthāpayitvā bahirmalam | vyāpohya mṛdamālipya snātvā gomayamālipet
Having set the materials for bathing on that bank, and washed away outward dirt, he should smear himself with clay, bathe, and then smear himself with cow-dung.
Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.56.7)
snātvā punaḥ punarvastraṃ tyaktvā vātha viśodhya ca | susnāto nṛpavadbhūyaḥ śuddhaṃ vāso vasīta ca
Having bathed again and again, and either discarded his garment or cleansed it, he should, well bathed, put on a clean garment once more, as befits a king.
Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.56.8)
malasnānaṃ sugandhādyaiḥ snānaṃ dantaviśodhanam | na kuryād brahmacārī ca tapasvī vidhavā tathā
A brahmacārin, an ascetic, and likewise a widow should not perform the bath with unguents, the bath with perfumes and such, or the cleansing of the teeth with such items.
Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.56.9)
sopavītaḥ śikhāṃ baddhvā praviśya ca jalāntaram | avagāhya samācānto jale nyasyet trimaṇḍalam
Wearing the sacred thread, having tied up his crown-lock, and entered into the water, having submerged himself and duly sipped water, he should, in the water, set the triple maṇḍala.
Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.56.10)
toye magnaḥ punarmantraṃ japecchaktyā śivaṃ smaret | utthāyācamya tenaiva svātmānamabhiṣecayet
Submerged in the water, he should again recite the mantra, and, according to his ability, call Shiva to mind; then, rising and sipping water, he should anoint himself with that same water.
Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.56.11)
gośṛṅgeṇa sadarbheṇa pālāśena dalena vā | pādmena vātha pāṇibhyāṃ pañcakṛtvastrireva vā
With a cow's horn together with darbha grass, or a palāśa leaf, or a lotus leaf, or with his own two hands, five times, or at least three times —
Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.56.12)
udyānādau gṛhe caiva varddhanyā kalaśena vā | avagāhanakāle'dbhirmantritairabhiṣecayet
in a garden or elsewhere, and likewise at home, with a small vessel or with a jar, at the time of immersion, he should anoint himself with mantra-consecrated waters.
Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.56.13)
atha cedvāruṇaṃ kartumaśaktaḥ śuddhavāsasā | ārdreṇa śodhayeddehamāpādatalamastakam
But if he is unable to perform the water-bath, he should purify his body, from the sole of the foot to the crown of the head, with a clean garment moistened with water.
Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.56.14)
āgneyaṃ vātha vā māntraṃ kuryāt snānaṃ śivena vā | śivacintāparaṃ snānaṃ yuktasyātmīyamucyate
Or else he may perform the ash-bath, the mantra-bath, or the bath with the name of Shiva; the bath consisting in contemplation of Shiva alone is said to be the true, inner bath for one who is disciplined.
Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.56.15)
svasūtroktavidhānena mantrācamanapūrvakam | ācared brahmayajñāntaṃ kṛtvā devāditarpaṇam
According to the procedure taught in his own sūtra, preceded by the sipping of water with mantra, he should perform the rites up to the recitation of the Veda, having made libation to the gods and the rest.
Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.56.16)
maṇḍalasthaṃ mahādevaṃ dhyātvābhyarcya yathāvidhi | dadyādarghyaṃ tatastasmai śivāyādityarūpiṇe
Having meditated upon Mahādeva present in the solar disc, and duly worshipped him, he should then offer the water-oblation to Shiva in the form of the sun.
Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.56.17)
athavaitatsvasūtroktaṃ kṛtvā hastau viśodhayet | karanyāsaṃ tataḥ kṛtvā sakalīkṛtavigrahaḥ
Or else, having performed this rite taught in his own sūtra, he should purify his hands; then, having performed karanyāsa, his body thus invested with the mantras —
Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.56.18)
vāmahastagatāmbhobhirgandhasiddhārthakānvitaiḥ | kuśapuñjena vā'bhyukṣya mūlamantrasamanvitaiḥ
with the water held in his left hand, mixed with fragrant substance and white mustard seed, or with a bunch of kuśa grass, he should sprinkle about, accompanied by the root mantra —
Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.56.19)
āpohiṣṭhādibhirmantraiḥ śeṣamāghrāya vai jalam | vāmanāsāpuṭenaiva devaṃ sambhāvayetsitam
and, with the mantras beginning 'āpo hi ṣṭhā,' having smelled the remaining water through the left nostril alone, he should contemplate the god as white.
Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.56.20)
arghamādāya dehasthaṃ savyanāsāpuṭena ca | kṛṣṇavarṇena bāhyasthaṃ bhāvayecca śilāgatam
Taking up the water-offering, breathing through the right nostril, he should contemplate the impurity residing in the body, of a black color, as going out and settling upon a stone outside.
Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.56.21)
tarpayedatha devebhya ṛṣibhyaśca viśeṣataḥ | bhūtebhyaśca pitṛbhyaśca dadyādarghyaṃ yathāvidhi
Then he should offer libation to the gods, and especially to the sages; and to the spirits and to the ancestors he should duly give the water-offering.
Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.56.22)
raktacandanatoyena hastamātreṇa maṇḍalam | suvṛttaṃ kalpayedbhūmau raktacūrṇādyalaṅkṛtam
With water mixed with red sandal, he should trace upon the ground a well-rounded maṇḍala of a hand's span, adorned with red powder and the like.
Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.56.23)
tatra sampūjayedbhānuṃ svakīyāvaraṇaiḥ saha | khakholkāyeti mantreṇa sāṅgataḥ sukhasiddhaye
There he should duly worship the Sun together with his own retinue, with the mantra 'Khakholkāya,' together with its limb-mantras, for the attainment of well-being.
Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.56.24)
punaśca maṇḍalaṃ kṛtvā tadaṅgaiḥ paripūjya ca | tatra sthāpya hemapātraṃ māgadhaprasthasammitam
Then, having again made a maṇḍala and duly worshipped it with its limbs, he should set upon it a golden vessel measuring one Magadhan prastha.
Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.56.25)
pūrayet gandhatoyena raktacandanayoginā | raktapuṣpaistilaiścaiva kuśākṣatasamanvitaiḥ
He should fill it with scented water mixed with red sandal, together with red flowers, sesame seeds, and kuśa grass and unbroken rice —
Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.56.26)
dūrvāpāmārgagavyaiśca kevalena jalena vā | jānubhyāṃ dharaṇīṃ gatvā natvā devaṃ ca maṇḍale
together with dūrvā grass, apāmārga, and the five products of the cow, or simply with plain water; then, kneeling upon the earth and bowing to the god in the maṇḍala —
Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.56.27)
kṛtvā śirasi tatpātraṃ dadyādarghyaṃ śivāya tat | athavāñjalinā toyaṃ sadarbhaṃ mūlavidyayā
having placed that vessel upon his head, he should offer that water-oblation to Shiva; or else, water together with darbha grass in his joined palms, with the root mantra —
Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.56.28)
utkṣipedambarasthāya śivāyādityamūrtaye | kṛtvā punaḥ karanyāsaṃ karaśodhanapūrvakam
he should cast it upward to Shiva, present in the form of the sun in the sky; then, having again performed the purification of the hands, followed by karanyāsa —
Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.56.29)
buddhveśānādi sadyāntaṃ pañcabrahmamayaṃ śivam | gṛhītvā bhasitaṃ mantrairvimṛjyāṅgāni saṃspṛśet
understanding Shiva to be composed of the five Brahma-mantras from Īśāna to Sadyojāta, having taken up ash with the mantras and rubbed it, he should touch his limbs with it —
Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.56.30)
āpādāntaiḥ śirovaktrahṛdguhyacaraṇān kramāt | tato mūlena sarvāṅgamālabhya vasanāntaram
touching the head, face, heart, the secret part, and the feet, in due order, down to the feet; then, with the root mantra, having touched his whole body, including within his garment —
Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.56.31)
paridhāya dvirācamya prokṣyaikādaśamantritaiḥ | jalairācchādya vāso'yad dvirācamya śivaṃ smaret
having put it on, sipped water twice, sprinkled himself and that garment with waters consecrated by the eleven mantras, and sipped water twice again, he should call Shiva to mind.
Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.56.32)
punarnyastakaro mantrī tripuṇḍraṃ bhasmanā likhet | avakramāya taṃ vyaktaṃ lalāṭe gandhavāriṇā
Again, the mantra-practitioner, having placed mantras upon his hand, should draw the triple stripe with ash — clearly, in due order, upon the forehead, with scented water.
Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.56.33)
vṛttaṃ vā caturasraṃ vā bindumarddhendumeva vā | lalāṭe yādṛśaṃ puṇḍraṃ likhitaṃ bhasmanā punaḥ
Whether round or square, with a dot or in the shape of a half-moon, whatever mark is drawn upon the forehead with ash —
Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.56.34)
tādṛśaṃ bhujayormūrdhni stanayorantare likhet | sarvāṅgoddhūlanaṃ caiva na samānaṃ tripuṇḍrakaiḥ
such a mark he should likewise draw upon the arms, the crown of the head, and between the breasts. The smearing of ash over the whole body is not equivalent to the triple stripes.
Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.56.35)
tasmāt tripuṇḍramevaikaṃ likheduddhūlanaṃ vinā | rudrākṣāndhārayenmūrdhni kaṇṭhe śrote kare tathā
Therefore one should draw only the triple stripe, without the mere smearing. He should wear rudrākṣa beads on the head, the neck, the ears, and likewise on the hands.
Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.56.36)
suvarṇavarṇamacchinnaṃ śubhaṃ nānyairdhṛtaṃ śubham | viprādīnāṃ kramāt śreṣṭhaṃ pītaṃ raktamathāsitam
Beads that are of golden color, unbroken, and auspicious, not previously worn by others, are auspicious; for brahmins and the rest, in due order, the beads yellow, red, and then black are best.
Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.56.37)
tadalābhe yathālābhaṃ dhāraṇīyamadūṣitam | tatrāpi nottaraṃ nīcairdhāryaṃ nīcamathottaraiḥ
In the absence of these, whatever is available and undefiled should be worn; even then, the beads proper to a higher class should not be worn by the lower, nor the lower by the higher.
Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.56.38)
nāśucirddhārayedakṣaṃ sadā kāleṣu dhārayet | itthaṃ trisandhyamathavā dvisandhyaṃ sakṛdeva vā
One who is impure should not wear the rudrākṣa; it should always be worn at proper times. Thus one should perform these rites at the three sandhyās, or at two, or even at one alone —
Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.56.39)
kṛtvā snānādikaṃ śaktyā pūjayetparameśvaram | pūjāsthānaṃ samāsādya baddhvā ruciramāsanam
having performed the bath and the rest according to his ability, he should worship the Supreme Lord; having come to the place of worship, and taken a pleasant seat —
Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.56.40)
dhyāyeddevaṃ ca devīṃ ca prāṅmukho vāpyudaṅmukhaḥ | śvetādīnnakulīśāntāṃstacchiṣyānpraṇamedgurum
facing east or facing north, he should meditate upon the God and the Goddess; he should bow to Śveta and the rest, down to Nakulīśa, to their disciples, and to his own guru.
Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.56.41)
punardevaṃ śivaṃ natvā tato nāmāṣṭakaṃ japet | śivo maheśvaraścaiva rudro viṣṇuḥ pitāmahaḥ
Having again bowed to the god Shiva, he should then recite the eightfold name: Shiva, and Maheśvara, Rudra, Viṣṇu, Pitāmaha —
Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.56.42)
saṃsāravaidyaḥ sarvajñaḥ paramātmeti cāṣṭakam | athavā śivamevaikaṃ japitvaikādaśādhikam
the Physician of worldly existence, the Omniscient, and the Supreme Self — thus the set of eight. Or else, having recited the name of Shiva alone, eleven times or more —
Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.56.43)
jihvāgre tejaso rāśiṃ dhyātvā vyādhyādiśāntaye | prakṣālya caraṇau kṛtvā karau candanacarcitau | prakurvīta karanyāsaṃ karaśodhanapūrvakam
having meditated, at the tip of the tongue, upon a mass of radiance, for the pacification of disease and the rest; having washed the feet and anointed the hands with sandal-paste, he should perform karanyāsa, preceded by the purification of the hands.
