Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.59.1)

upamanyuruvāca | prokṣayenmūlamantreṇa pūjāsthānaṃ viśuddhaye | gandhacandanatoyena puṣpaṃ tatra vinikṣipet

Upamanyu said: He should sprinkle the place of worship with the root mantra, for its purification, with water mixed with fragrance and sandal; and there he should scatter a flower.

Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.59.2)

astreṇotsārya vai vighnānavaguṇṭhya ca varmaṇā | astraṃ dikṣu pravinyasya kalpayedarcanābhuvam

Having driven away obstacles with the weapon-mantra, and enveloped the place with the armor-mantra, and placed the weapon-mantra in the directions, he should prepare the ground for worship.

Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.59.3)

tatra darbhānparistīrya kṣālayetprokṣaṇādibhiḥ | saṃśodhya sarvapātrāṇi dravyaśuddhiṃ samācaret

There, having spread darbha grass around, he should wash the place with sprinklings and the like; having purified all the vessels, he should perform the purification of the substances.

Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.59.4)

prokṣaṇīmarghyapātraṃ ca pādyapātramataḥ param | tathaivācamanīyasya pātraṃ ceti catuṣṭayam

The sprinkling-vessel, the arghya-vessel, the pādya-vessel for washing the feet, and the vessel for the sipping-water — these four.

Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.59.5)

prakṣālya prokṣya vīkṣyātha kṣipetteṣu jalaṃ śivam | puṇyadravyāṇi sarvāṇi yathālābhaṃ vinikṣipet

Having washed, sprinkled, and inspected them, he should pour pure water into them; and he should place into them all manner of auspicious substances, as available.

Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.59.6)

ratnāni rajataṃ hema gandhapuṣpākṣatādayaḥ | phalapallavadarbhāṃśca puṇyadravyāṇyanekadhā

Gems, silver, gold, fragrance, flowers, unbroken rice and the rest, fruits, young shoots, and darbha grass — these are the many kinds of auspicious substances.

Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.59.7)

snānodake sugandhādi pānīye ca viśeṣataḥ | śītalāni manojñānī kusumādīni nikṣipet

In the bathing-water he should place fragrant substances and the like; and especially in the drinking-water, cool and pleasing flowers and such.

Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.59.8)

uśīraṃ candanaṃ caiva pādye tu parikalpayet | jātikaṅkolakarpūrabahumūlatamālakān

He should place fragrant root and sandal in the foot-water; and nutmeg, kaṅkola, camphor, bahumūla root, and tamāla-leaf —

Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.59.9)

kṣipedācamanīye ca cūrṇayitvā viśeṣataḥ | elāṃ pātreṣu sarveṣu karpūraṃ candanaṃ tathā

having powdered them, he should place them especially in the sipping-water. Cardamom in all the vessels, and likewise camphor and sandal —

Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.59.10)

kuśāgrāṇyakṣatāṃścaiva yavavrīhitilānapi | ājyasiddhārthapuṣpāṇi bhasitaṃ cārghyapātrake

the tips of kuśa grass, unbroken rice, barley, rice-grain, and sesame, ghee, white mustard, flowers, and ash — in the arghya-vessel.

Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.59.11)

kuśapuṣpayavavrīhibahumūlatamālakān | prakṣipet prokṣaṇīpātre bhasitaṃ ca yathākramam

Kuśa grass, flowers, barley, rice-grain, bahumūla, and tamāla, and, in due order, ash — he should place in the sprinkling-vessel.

Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.59.12)

sarvatra mantraṃ vinyasya varmaṇāveṣṭya bāhyataḥ | paścādastreṇa saṃrakṣya dhenumudrāṃ pradarśayet

Having placed the mantra upon all of them, and enveloped them outwardly with the armor-mantra, and afterward protected them with the weapon-mantra, he should display the cow-mudrā.

Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.59.13)

pūjādravyāṇi sarvāṇi prokṣaṇīpātravāriṇā | samprokṣya mūlamantreṇa śodhayedvidhivattataḥ

With the water of the sprinkling-vessel and the root mantra, he should sprinkle all the substances of worship, and thereby duly purify them.

Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.59.14)

pātrāṇāṃ prokṣaṇīmekāmalābhe sarvakarmasu | sādhayedarghyamadbhistatsāmānyaṃ sādhakottamaḥ

When several vessels are unavailable, in all the rites, the best of practitioners should, with a single sprinkling-vessel and its water, accomplish the functions of the arghya-vessel and the rest, treating them as equivalent.

Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.59.15)

tato vināyakaṃ devaṃ bhakṣyabhojyādibhiḥ kramāt | pūjayitvā vidhānena dvārapārśve'tha dakṣiṇe

Then, having duly worshipped the god Vināyaka, in due order, with food and other offerings, according to rule, at the right side of the doorway —

Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.59.16)

antaḥpurādhipaṃ sākṣānnandinaṃ samyagarcayet | cāmīkarācalaprakhyaṃ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitam

he should duly worship Nandin, the very lord of the inner sanctum, resembling a mountain of gold, adorned with every ornament —

Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.59.17)

bālendumukuṭaṃ saumyaṃ trinetraṃ ca caturbhujam | dīptaśūlamṛgīṭaṅkatigmavetradharaṃ prabhum

his crown set with the crescent moon, gentle, three-eyed, four-armed, the Lord bearing a blazing trident, a deer, an axe, and a sharp staff —

Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.59.18)

candrabimbābhavadanaṃ harivaktramathāpi vā | uttare dvārapārśvasya bhāryāṃ ca marutāṃ sutām

his face like the orb of the moon, or else with a lion's countenance. And, at the north side of the doorway, his wife, the daughter of the Maruts —

Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.59.19)

suyaśāṃ suvratāmambāṃ pādamaṇḍanatatparām | pūjayitvā praviśyāntarbhavanaṃ parameṣṭhinaḥ

Suyaśā, of excellent vows, the Mother, devoted to the adornment of Nandin's feet — having worshipped her, he should enter within the sanctuary of the Supreme Lord.

Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.59.20)

sampūjya liṅgaṃ tairdravyairnirmālyamapanodayet | prakṣālya puṣpaṃ śirasi nyasettasya viśuddhaye

Having worshipped the liṅga with those substances, he should remove the previous offerings; and, having washed it, for its purification, place a flower upon its head.

Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.59.21)

puṣpahasto japet śaktyā mantraṃ mantraviśuddhaye | aiśānyāṃ caṇdamārādhya nirmālyaṃ tasya dāpayet

With a flower in hand, he should recite the mantra as he is able, for the purification of the mantra; and, having worshipped Caṇḍa in the north-east, he should give him the removed offerings.

Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.59.22)

kalpayedāsanaṃ paścādādhārādi yathākramam | ādhāraśaktiṃ kalyāṇīṃ śyāmāṃ dhyāyedatho bhuvi

He should then arrange the seat, beginning with the Ādhāra-śakti and so forth, in due order. He should meditate upon the Ādhāra-śakti, auspicious and dark, resting upon the earth.

Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.59.23)

tasyāḥ purastādutkaṇṭhamanantaṃ kuṇḍalākṛtim | dhavalaṃ pañcaphaṇinaṃ lelihānamivāmbaram

In front of her, he should meditate upon Ananta, his neck raised, in the form of a coil, white, five-hooded, as if licking the sky.

Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.59.24)

tasyoparyāsanaṃ bhadraṃ kaṇṭhīravacatuṣpadam | dharmo jñānaṃ ca vairāgyamaiśvaryaṃ ca padāni vai

Above him, the auspicious seat, four-footed with lions. Dharma, Jñāna, Vairāgya, and Aiśvarya are indeed its four feet —

Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.59.25)

āgneyādiśvetaraktapītaśyāmāni varṇataḥ | adharmādīni pūrvādīnyuttarāntānyanukramāt

beginning in the south-east, of the colors white, red, yellow, and dark, in due order; and Adharma and the rest occupy the intervening directions, from east to north.

Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.59.26)

rājāvartamaṇiprakhyānnyasya gātrāṇi bhāvayet | asyordhvacchādanaṃ padmamāsanaṃ vimalaṃ sitam

Having placed these limbs, resembling the color of the rājāvarta gem, he should contemplate its members. Above this, its covering, a stainless, white lotus, forms the seat.

Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.59.27)

aṣṭapatrāṇi tasyāhuraṇimādiguṇāṣṭakam | kesarāṇi ca vāmādyā rudrā vāmādiśaktibhiḥ

Its eight petals, they say, are the eightfold powers beginning with aṇimā; and its filaments are the Rudras beginning with Vāma, together with the Śaktis beginning with Vāmā —

Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.59.28)

bījānyapi ca tā eva śaktayontarmanonmanīḥ | karṇikāparavairāgyaṃ nālaṃ jñānaṃ śivātmakam

and its seed-vessels are those very Śaktis, culminating in the inner power of Manonmanī. Its pericarp is supreme dispassion; its stalk is knowledge, of the very nature of Shiva —

Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.59.29)

kandaśca śivadharmātmā karṇikānte trimaṇḍale | trimaṇḍaloparyātmāditattvatritayamāsanam

and its bulb is Dharma, of the nature of Shiva, at the base of the pericarp, in the triple maṇḍala. Above this triple maṇḍala, the triad of tattvas beginning with Ātmā forms the seat —

Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.59.30)

sarvāsanopari sukhaṃ vicitrāstaraṇāstṛtam | āsanaṃ kalpayeddivyaṃ śuddhavidyāsamujjvalam

and above all these seats, comfortable, spread with a many-colored covering, he should fashion the divine seat, resplendent with pure Vidyā.

Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.59.31)

āvāhanaṃ sthāpanaṃ ca sannirodhaṃ nirīkṣaṇam | namaskāraṃ ca kurvīta badhvā mudrāḥ pṛthakpṛthak

He should perform the invocation, the establishing, the restraining, the beholding, and the salutation, forming each of these mudrās separately.

Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.59.32)

pādyamācamanaṃ cārghyaṃ gandhaṃ puṣpaṃ tataḥ param | dhūpaṃ dīpaṃ ca tāmbūlaṃ dattvātha snāpayet śivau

He should offer the water for the feet, the sipping-water, the water-offering, fragrance and flowers, incense, a lamp, and betel; then he should bathe the divine Pair.

Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.59.33)

athavā parikalpyaivamāsanaṃ mūrtimeva ca | sakalīkṛtya mūlena brahmabhiścāparaistathā

Or else, having thus arranged the seat and the image, and having invested it with the mantras — with the root mantra and the other Brahma-mantras —

Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.59.34)

āvāhayettato devyā śivaṃ paramakāraṇam | śuddhasphaṭikasaṅkāśaṃ devaṃ niścalamakṣaram

he should then invoke, together with the Goddess, Shiva, the supreme Cause, the god resembling pure crystal, unmoving, imperishable —

Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.59.35)

kāraṇaṃ sarvalokānāṃ sarvalokamayaṃ param | antarbahiḥsthitaṃ vyāpya hyaṇoraṇu mahattaram

the cause of all the worlds, supreme, consisting of all the worlds, existing within and without, subtler than the subtle and greater than the great —

Verse 36 (shiva.vayaviya.59.36)

bhaktānāmaprayatnena dṛśyamīśvaramavyayam | brahmendraviṣṇurudrādyairapi devairagocaram

visible to his devotees without effort, the imperishable Lord, beyond the reach even of the gods, Brahmā, Indra, Viṣṇu, Rudra, and the rest —

Verse 37 (shiva.vayaviya.59.37)

devasāraṃ ca vidvadbhiragocaramiti śrutam | ādimadhyāntarahitaṃ bheṣajaṃ bhavarogiṇām

the very essence of the gods, and yet, as heard in scripture, beyond the reach even of the learned; without beginning, middle, or end; the medicine for those diseased with worldly existence —

Verse 38 (shiva.vayaviya.59.38)

śivatattvamiti khyātaṃ śivārthaṃ jagati sthiram | pañcopacāravadbhaktyā pūjayelliṅgamuttamam

known as the principle of Shiva, abiding in the world for the sake of auspiciousness — thus he should worship the supreme liṅga with devotion, with the fivefold offering.

Verse 39 (shiva.vayaviya.59.39)

liṅgamūrttirmaheśasya śivasya paramātmanaḥ | snānakāle prakurvīta jayaśabdādimaṅgalam

The liṅga is the very form of Maheśa, of Shiva, the Supreme Self. At the time of bathing, he should raise cries of victory and other auspicious sounds.

Verse 40 (shiva.vayaviya.59.40)

pañcagavyaghṛtakṣīradadhimadhvādipūrvakaiḥ | mūlaiḥ phalānāṃ sāraiśca tilasarṣapasaktubhiḥ

With the five products of the cow, with ghee, milk, curd, and honey, and with roots, the essences of fruits, sesame, mustard, and parched-grain flour —

Verse 41 (shiva.vayaviya.59.41)

bījairyavādibhiśśastaiścūrṇairmāṣādisambhavaiḥ | saṃsnāpyālipya piṣṭādyaiḥ snāpayeduṣṇavāribhiḥ

with seeds, barley and the excellent grains, and with powders of black gram and the rest — having thus bathed it and smeared it with pastes, he should then bathe it with warm water —

Verse 42 (shiva.vayaviya.59.42)

gharṣayedbilvapatrādyairlepagandhāpanuttaye | punaḥ saṃsnāpya salilaiścakravarttyupacārataḥ

he should rub it with bilva leaves and the like, to remove the smell of the paste; and, having bathed it again with water, continue with the procedure fit for a universal sovereign —

Verse 43 (shiva.vayaviya.59.43)

sugandhāmalakaṃ dadyād haridrāṃ ca yathākramam | tataḥ saṃśodhya salilairliṅgaṃ beramathāpi vā

he should give fragrant āmalaka and turmeric, in due order; then, having thoroughly cleansed the liṅga or the image with water —

Verse 44 (shiva.vayaviya.59.44)

snāpayedgandhatoyena kuśapuṣpodakena ca | hiraṇyaratnatoyaiśca mantrasiddhairyathākramam

he should bathe it with scented water, water mixed with kuśa grass and flowers, and mantra-consecrated water mixed with gold and gems, in due order.

Verse 45 (shiva.vayaviya.59.45)

asambhave tu dravyāṇāṃ yathāsambhavasambhṛtaiḥ | kevalairmantratoyairvā snāpayecchraddhayā śivam

But when these substances are unavailable, with whatever is available, or simply with mantra-consecrated water alone, he should, with faith, bathe Shiva.

Verse 46 (shiva.vayaviya.59.46)

kalaśenātha śaṅkhena varddhanyā pāṇinā tathā | sakuśena sapuṣpeṇa snāpayenmantrapūrvakam

With a jar, a conch, a small vessel, or with the hand, together with kuśa grass and flowers, he should bathe it, preceded by the mantra.

Verse 47 (shiva.vayaviya.59.47)

pavamānena rudreṇa nīlena tvaritena ca | liṅgasūktādisūktaiśca śirasātharvaṇena ca

With the Pavamāna hymn, the Rudra hymn, the Nīla and Tvarita hymns, the Liṅga-sūkta and other hymns, the Śiras hymn, and the Ātharvaṇa mantra —

Verse 48 (shiva.vayaviya.59.48)

ṛgbhiśca sāmabhiḥ śaivairbrahmabhiścāpi pañcabhiḥ | snāpayeddevadeveśaṃ śivena praṇavena ca

with the Ṛg and Sāma verses proper to the Shaiva tradition, and with the five Brahma-mantras, and with the mantra of Shiva and the syllable Oṃ, he should bathe the God of gods.

Verse 49 (shiva.vayaviya.59.49)

yathā devasya devyāśca kuryātsnānādikaṃ tathā | na tu kaścidviśeṣo'sti tatra tau sadṛśau yataḥ

As he performs the bathing and the rest for the God, so should he perform it for the Goddess as well; there is no distinction there, for the two are alike.

Verse 50 (shiva.vayaviya.59.50)

prathamaṃ devamuddiśya kṛtvā snānādikāḥ kriyāḥ | devyai praścātprakurvīta devadevasya śāsanāt

Having first performed the rites of bathing and the rest directed toward the God, he should perform them afterward for the Goddess, by the ordinance of the God of gods.

Verse 51 (shiva.vayaviya.59.51)

arddhanārīśvare pūjye paurvāparyaṃ na vidyate | tatra tatropacārāṇāṃ liṅge vānyatra vā kvacit

In the worship of Ardhanārīśvara, no question of precedence exists; there, whether in the liṅga or elsewhere, the same holds for the respective offerings.

Verse 52 (shiva.vayaviya.59.52)

kṛtvā'bhiṣekaṃ liṅgasya śucinā ca sugandhinā | sammṛjya vāsasā dadyādambaraṃ copavītakam

Having performed the anointing of the liṅga with pure, fragrant water, and wiped it with a cloth, he should offer it a garment and a sacred thread.

Verse 53 (shiva.vayaviya.59.53)

pādyamācamanaṃ cārghyaṃ gandhaṃ puṣpaṃ ca bhūṣaṇam | dhūpaṃ dīpaṃ ca naivedyaṃ pānīyaṃ mukhaśodhanam

The water for the feet, the sipping-water, the water-offering, fragrance, flowers, and ornaments, incense and a lamp, the food-offering, drinking-water, and water for cleansing the mouth —

Verse 54 (shiva.vayaviya.59.54)

punaścācamanīyaṃ ca mukhavāsaṃ tataḥ param | mukuṭaṃ ca śubhaṃ bhadraṃ sarvaratnairalaṅkṛtam

and again the sipping-water, and after that a mouth-fragrance, and an auspicious crown, adorned with every gem.

Verse 55 (shiva.vayaviya.59.55)

bhūṣaṇāni pavitrāṇi mālyāni vividhāni ca | vyajane cāmare chatraṃ tālavṛntaṃ ca darpaṇam

Pure ornaments and garlands of various kinds; a fan, a yak-tail whisk, a parasol, a palm-leaf fan, and a mirror —

Verse 56 (shiva.vayaviya.59.56)

dattvā nīrājanaṃ kuryātsarvamaṅgalaniḥsvanaiḥ | gītanṛtyādibhiścaiva jayaśabdasamanvitaḥ

having offered these, he should perform the waving of lamps, with the sound of all auspicious instruments, together with song and dance, accompanied by cries of victory.

Verse 57 (shiva.vayaviya.59.57)

haime ca rājate tāmre pātre vā mṛṇmaye śubhe | padmakaiḥ śobhitaiḥ puṣpairbījairdadhyakṣatādibhiḥ

In a vessel of gold, silver, copper, or fine clay, beautified with lotus-designs, set with flowers, seeds, curd, unbroken rice, and the rest —

Verse 58 (shiva.vayaviya.59.58)

triśūlaśaṅkhayugmābjanandyāvartaiḥ karīṣajaiḥ | śrīvatsasvastikādarśavajrairvahnyādicihnitaiḥ

marked with trident, a pair of conches, a lotus, and Nandyāvarta designs made of cow-dung ash, marked with śrīvatsa, svastika, mirror, thunderbolt, and fire and the rest —

Verse 59 (shiva.vayaviya.59.59)

aṣṭau pradīpānparito vidhāyaikaṃ tu madhyame | teṣu vāmādikāścintyāḥ pūjyāśca nava śaktayaḥ

having arranged eight lamps around it and one in the center, in these the nine Śaktis beginning with Vāmā are to be contemplated and worshipped.

Verse 60 (shiva.vayaviya.59.60)

kavacena samācchādya saṃrakṣyāstreṇa sarvataḥ | dhenumudrāṃ ca sandarśya pāṇibhyāṃ pātramuddharet

Having covered it with the armor-mantra, and protected it on all sides with the weapon-mantra, and displayed the cow-mudrā, he should lift up the vessel with both hands.

Verse 61 (shiva.vayaviya.59.61)

athavāropayetpātre pañcadīpānyathākramam | vidikṣvapi ca madhye ca dīpamekamathāpi vā

Or else he may set five lamps upon the vessel, in due order, in the intermediate directions, and one lamp in the center as well.

Verse 62 (shiva.vayaviya.59.62)

tatastatpātramuddhṛtya liṅgāderupari kramāt | triḥpradakṣiṇayogena bhrāmayenmūlavidyayā

Then, having lifted up that vessel, he should wave it above the liṅga and the rest, in a circling motion, thrice around, with the root mantra.

Verse 63 (shiva.vayaviya.59.63)

dadyādarghyaṃ tato mūrdhni bhasitaṃ ca sugandhitam | kṛtvā puṣpāñjaliṃ paścādupahārānnivedayet

He should then offer the water-oblation upon its head, and fragrant ash; and, having offered a handful of flowers, he should afterward present the remaining offerings.

Verse 64 (shiva.vayaviya.59.64)

pānīyaṃ ca tato dadyāddattvā vācamanaṃ punaḥ | pañca saugandhikopetaṃ tāmbūlaṃ ca nivedayet

He should then give drinking-water, and, having again offered sipping-water, he should present the betel-leaf, together with the fivefold fragrant preparation.

Verse 65 (shiva.vayaviya.59.65)

prokṣayetprokṣaṇīyāni gānanāṭyāni kārayet | liṅgādau śivayościntāṃ kṛtvā śaktyā japet śivam

He should sprinkle whatever is to be sprinkled, and have songs and dances performed; and, having contemplated the divine Pair in the liṅga and elsewhere, he should recite the mantra of Shiva as he is able.

Verse 66 (shiva.vayaviya.59.66)

pradakṣiṇaṃ praṇāmaṃ ca stavaṃ cātmasamarpaṇam | vijñāpanaṃ ca kāryāṇāṃ kuryādvinayapūrvakam

He should, with humility, perform circumambulation, prostration, hymns of praise, the offering up of the self, and the presentation of his concerns.

Verse 67 (shiva.vayaviya.59.67)

arghyaṃ puṣpāñjaliṃ dattvā baddhvā mudrāṃ yathāvidhi | paścātkṣamāpayeddevamudvāsyātmani cintayet

Having offered the water-oblation and a handful of flowers, and duly formed the mudrā, he should afterward beg the god's forgiveness, take leave of him, and contemplate him within the self.

Verse 68 (shiva.vayaviya.59.68)

pādyādimukhavāsāntamarghyādyaṃ cātisaṅkaṭe | puṣpavikṣepamātraṃ vā kuryādbhāvapuraḥsaram

In a case of great constraint, he may perform merely the scattering of a flower, with devotion, in place of the full sequence from the foot-water to the mouth-fragrance and the water-oblation.

Verse 69 (shiva.vayaviya.59.69)

tāvataiva paro dharmo bhāvane sukṛto bhavet | asampūjya na bhuñjīta śivamāprāṇasañcarāt

By that alone, supreme merit is accomplished for one whose heart is truly devoted. He should not eat without having worshipped Shiva, so long as the breath moves within him.

Verse 70 (shiva.vayaviya.59.70)

yadi pāpastu bhuñjīta svairaṃ tasya na niṣkṛtiḥ | pramādena tu bhuṅkte cettadudgīrya prayatnataḥ

If, sinfully, he should eat carelessly, there is no atonement for him; but if he eats through mere inadvertence, he should, with effort, vomit that up —

Verse 71 (shiva.vayaviya.59.71)

snātvā dviguṇamabhyarcya devaṃ devīmupoṣya ca | śivasyāyutamabhyasyed brahmacaryapuraḥsaram

and, having bathed, worship the God and the Goddess doubly, and fast, and, preceded by a vow of celibacy, recite the mantra of Shiva ten thousand times.

Verse 72 (shiva.vayaviya.59.72)

paredyuḥ śaktito dattvā suvarṇādyaṃ śivāya ca | śivabhaktāya vā kṛtvā mahāpūjāṃ śucirbhavet

On the next day, having given, according to his means, gold and the like to Shiva, or having performed a great worship for a devotee of Shiva, he becomes pure.
