Vayaviya Samhita · Chapter 61
The Rite of Worship with All Limbs and Sub-Limbs
Verse 1 (shiva.vayaviya.61.1)
upamanyuruvāca | brahmaghno vā surāpo vā steyī vā gurutalpagaḥ | mātṛhā pitṛhā vāpi vīrahā bhrūṇahāpi vā
Upamanyu said: Whether he be a slayer of a brāhmaṇa, a drinker of liquor, a thief, or one who has approached his guru's wife, a slayer of mother or father, a slayer of a hero, or even a slayer of an embryo —
Verse 2 (shiva.vayaviya.61.2)
sampūjyāmantrakaṃ bhaktyā śivaṃ paramakāraṇam | taistaiḥ pāpaiḥ pramucyeta varṣairdvādaśabhiḥ kramāt
if he worships, even without knowledge of mantra, with devotion, Śiva the Supreme Cause, he is freed from each of those sins in due course, within twelve years.
Verse 3 (shiva.vayaviya.61.3)
tasmāt sarvaprayatnena patito'pi yajet śivam | bhaktaścennāparaḥ kaścidbhikṣāhāro jitedriyaḥ
Therefore, with all effort, even a fallen man should worship Śiva; if he finds no other devotee to aid him, let him, living on alms and with senses conquered, do so himself.
Verse 4 (shiva.vayaviya.61.4)
kṛtvāpi sumahatpāpaṃ bhaktyā pañcākṣareṇa tu | pūjayedyadi deveśaṃ tasmātpāpātpramucyate
Even having committed a very great sin, if one worships the Lord of the gods with devotion through the five-syllabled mantra, he is freed from that sin.
Verse 5 (shiva.vayaviya.61.5)
abbhakṣā vāyubhakṣāśca ye cānye vratakarśitāḥ | teṣāmetairvratairnāsti śivalokasamāgamaḥ
Those who live on water alone, or on air alone, and others emaciated by various vows — for them, through these vows, there is no attaining the world of Śiva.
Verse 6 (shiva.vayaviya.61.6)
bhaktyā pañcākṣareṇaiva yaḥ śivaṃ sakṛdarcayet | so'pi gacchecchivasthānaṃ śivamantrasya gauravāt
Whoever worships Śiva even once with devotion through the five-syllabled mantra — he too attains the abode of Śiva, through the greatness of the Śiva-mantra.
Verse 7 (shiva.vayaviya.61.7)
tasmāttapāṃsi yajñāśca sarve sarvasvadakṣiṇāḥ | śivamūrtyarcanasyaite koṭyaṃśenāpi no samāḥ
Therefore austerities, sacrifices, and all sacrifices in which one's entire wealth is given as fee — none of these equal even a ten-millionth part of the worship of Śiva's image.
Verse 8 (shiva.vayaviya.61.8)
baddho vāpyatha mukto vā pāśātpañcākṣareṇa cet | pūjayanmucyate bhakto nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
Whether bound in worldly fetters or already free, if a devotee worships through the five-syllabled mantra, he is released from the bond — no doubt need be entertained here.
Verse 9 (shiva.vayaviya.61.9)
arudro vā sarudro vā sūktena śivamarcayet | yaḥ sakṛtpatito vāpi mūḍho vā mucyate naraḥ
Whether without the Rudra-mantra or with it, whoever worships Śiva with a Vedic hymn; even a man once fallen or foolish is thereby liberated.
Verse 10 (shiva.vayaviya.61.10)
ṣaḍakṣareṇa vā devaṃ sūktamantreṇa pūjayet | śivabhakto jitakrodho hyalabdho labdha eva ca
He should worship the god with the six-syllabled mantra, or with the Vedic hymn-mantra; the Śiva-devotee who has conquered anger — for him, the unattained becomes, as it were, attained.
Verse 11 (shiva.vayaviya.61.11)
alabdhāllabdha evātra viśiṣṭo nātra saṃśayaḥ | sabrahmāṅgena vā tena sahaṃsena vimucyate
Here the attained is distinguished from the unattained, there is no doubt of this; through that mantra together with its Brahma-limb, joined with the Haṃsa, he is liberated.
Verse 12 (shiva.vayaviya.61.12)
tasmānnityaṃ śivaṃ bhaktyā sūktamantreṇa pūjayet | ekakālaṃ dvikālaṃ vā trikālaṃ nityameva vā
Therefore one should ever worship Śiva with devotion through the hymn-mantra — once a day, twice a day, or thrice a day, continually.
Verse 13 (shiva.vayaviya.61.13)
ye'rcayanti mahādevaṃ vijñeyāste maheśvarāḥ | jñānenātmasahāyena nārcito bhagavān śivaḥ
Those who worship Mahādeva are to be known as Māheśvaras; yet without knowledge as one's own aid, the Lord Śiva is not truly worshipped.
Verse 14 (shiva.vayaviya.61.14)
sa ciraṃ saṃsaratyasmin saṃsāre duḥkhasāgare | durlabhaṃ prāpya mānuṣyaṃ mūḍho nārcayate śivam
He wanders long in this ocean of suffering that is saṃsāra; having obtained the rare gift of human birth, the fool does not worship Śiva.
Verse 15 (shiva.vayaviya.61.15)
niṣphalaṃ tasya tajjanma mokṣāya na bhavedyataḥ | durlabhaṃ prāpya mānuṣyaṃ ye'rcayanti pinākinam
His birth is fruitless, since it does not lead to liberation; but those who, having obtained the rare gift of human birth, worship the Wielder of the Pināka —
Verse 16 (shiva.vayaviya.61.16)
teṣāṃ hi saphalaṃ janma kṛtārthāste narottamāḥ | bhavabhaktiparā ye ca bhavapraṇatacetasaḥ
their birth is fruitful; they are accomplished, the best among men; and those who are devoted to Bhava and whose minds bow at Bhava's feet —
Verse 17 (shiva.vayaviya.61.17)
those who are constantly engaged in the remembrance of Bhava are not partakers of suffering; delightful mansions, ornaments of every adornment, and women —
Verse 18 (shiva.vayaviya.61.18)
dhanaṃ cātṛptiparyantaṃ śivapūjāvidheḥ phalam | ye vāñchanti mahābhogān rājyaṃ ca tridaśālaye
wealth, to the very limit of satisfaction — this is the fruit of the rite of Śiva-worship; those who desire great enjoyments and sovereignty in the abode of the thirty gods —
Verse 19 (shiva.vayaviya.61.19)
te vāñchanti sadākālaṃ harasya caraṇāmbujam | saubhāgyaṃ kāntimadrūpaṃ sattvaṃ tyāgārdrabhāvatā
they ever desire nothing but the lotus-feet of Hara; good fortune, a beautiful form, the quality of sattva, a nature moistened with renunciation —
Verse 20 (shiva.vayaviya.61.20)
śauryaṃ vai jagati khyātiḥ śivamarcayato bhavet | tasmāt sarvaṃ parityajya śivaikāhitamānasaḥ
valor, and fame in the world — all this comes to one who worships Śiva; therefore, having abandoned everything, with the mind fixed on Śiva alone —
Verse 21 (shiva.vayaviya.61.21)
śivapūjāvidhiṃ kuryādyadīcchet śivamātmanaḥ | tvaritaṃ jīvitaṃ yāti tvaritaṃ yāti yauvanam
one should perform the rite of Śiva-worship, if he desires Śiva for his own sake; life passes swiftly away, youth departs swiftly.
Verse 22 (shiva.vayaviya.61.22)
tvaritaṃ vyādhirabhyeti tasmāt pūjyaḥ pinākadhṛk | yāvannāyāti maraṇaṃ yāvannākramate jarā
Disease comes swiftly, therefore the Wielder of the Pināka should be worshipped; so long as death does not come, so long as old age does not seize hold,
Verse 23 (shiva.vayaviya.61.23)
yāvannendriyavaikalyaṃ tāvatpūjaya śaṅkaram | na śivārcanatulyo'sti dharmo'nyo bhuvanatraye
so long as the faculties do not decay — until then, worship Śaṅkara; in the three worlds there is no other dharma equal to the worship of Śiva.
Verse 24 (shiva.vayaviya.61.24)
iti vijñāya yatnena pūjanīyaḥ sadāśivaḥ | dvārayāgaṃ javanikāṃ parivārabalikriyām
Thus understanding this, one should worship Sadāśiva with effort — the door-worship, the setting of the curtain, and the offering-rite for the retinue deities —
Verse 25 (shiva.vayaviya.61.25)
nityotsavaṃ ca kurvīta prāsāde yadi pūjayet | havirnivedanādūrdhvaṃ svayaṃ cānucaro'pi vā
and should perform the daily festival too; if he worships in the temple, then after the offering of the oblation, he himself, or even an attendant —
Verse 26 (shiva.vayaviya.61.26)
prāsādaparivārebhyo baliṃ dadyādyathākramam | nirgamya saha vāditraistadāśābhimukhaḥ sthitaḥ
should give the offering, in due order, to the retinue-deities of the temple; going out with musical instruments, standing facing that direction —
Verse 27 (shiva.vayaviya.61.27)
puṣpaṃ dhūpaṃ ca dīpaṃ ca dadyādannaṃ jalaiḥ saha | tato dadyāt mahāpīṭhe tiṣṭhan balimudaṅmukhaḥ
he should offer flowers, incense, a lamp, and food together with water; thereafter, standing at the great pedestal facing north, he should offer the bali.
Verse 28 (shiva.vayaviya.61.28)
tato niveditaṃ deve yattadannādikaṃ purā | tatsarvaṃ sāvaśeṣaṃ vā caṇḍāya vinivedayet
Then whatever food and the rest had earlier been offered to the god, all of that, together with what remains, he should offer to Caṇḍa.
Verse 29 (shiva.vayaviya.61.29)
hutvā ca vidhivatpaścātpūjāśeṣaṃ samāpayet | kṛtvā prayogaṃ vidhivadyāvanmantraṃ japaṃ tataḥ
Having performed the fire-oblation, he should thereafter, duly, complete the remaining part of the worship; having duly performed the ritual procedure, he should recite as much japa as the mantra requires.
Verse 30 (shiva.vayaviya.61.30)
nityotsavaṃ prakurvīta yathoktaṃ śivaśāsane | vipule taijase pātre raktapadmopaśobhite
He should perform the daily festival as taught in the Śaiva scripture; in a large golden vessel, adorned with a red lotus —
Verse 31 (shiva.vayaviya.61.31)
astraṃ pāśupataṃ divyaṃ tatrāvāhya samarcayet | śirasyāropya tatpātraṃ dvijasyālaṅkṛtasya ca
he should invoke the divine Pāśupata weapon there and worship it; placing that vessel upon the head of an adorned brāhmaṇa —
Verse 32 (shiva.vayaviya.61.32)
nyastāstravapuṣā tena dīptayaṣṭidharasya ca | prāsādaparivārebhyo bahirmaṅgalaniḥsvanaiḥ
the priest, embodying that weapon-form and bearing a blazing staff, is led outside to the temple's retinue-shrines, amid auspicious sounds —
Verse 33 (shiva.vayaviya.61.33)
nṛtyageyādibhiścaiva saha dīpadhvajādibhiḥ | pradakṣiṇatrayaṃ kṛtvā na drutaṃ cāvilambitam
together with dance and song, with lamps and banners, having made three circumambulations, neither too swiftly nor too slowly —
Verse 34 (shiva.vayaviya.61.34)
mahāpīṭhaṃ samāvṛtya triḥpradakṣiṇayogataḥ | punaḥ praviṣṭo dvārastho yajamānaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ | ādāyābhyantaraṃ nītvā hyastramudvāsayettataḥ
having encircled the great pedestal with three circumambulations, the sacrificer, entering again at the door with joined palms, brings the weapon-deity within, and then dismisses the weapon.
Verse 35 (shiva.vayaviya.61.35)
pradakṣiṇādikaṃ kṛtvā yathāpūrvoditaṃ kramāt | ādāya cāṣṭapuṣpāṇi pūjāmatha samāpayet
Having performed the circumambulation and the rest in the order stated before, and taking eight flowers, he should then bring the worship to its conclusion.
