Chapter 108All chaptersChapter 110

Verse 1 (skanda.1.109.1)

gautama uvāca śṛṇu devi purāvṛttaṁ kailāse merudhanvinā ādiṣṭastīrthayātrārthamahaṁ liṁgāni vīkṣitum

Gautama said: Hear, O goddess, of that past event — at Kailasa, the wielder of Meru's bow commanded me to go on pilgrimage to behold the lingas.

Verse 2 (skanda.1.109.2)

rudrakṣetre ca kedāre tathā badarikāśrame kāśyāṁ puṇyeṣu deśeṣu tathā śrīparvate śive

In Rudrakshetra, in Kedara, in Badarikashrama, in Kashi, and in the sacred lands, and at Shiva's own Shriparvata too.

Verse 3 (skanda.1.109.3)

kāṁcīmukhyāsu puṇyāsu purīṣvapyagamaṁ tadā ṛṣibhirvibudhaiḥ sārthairgaṇairyogibhiruttamaiḥ

To the sacred cities headed by Kanchi too I then went, together with sages, gods, ganas, and the foremost yogis.

Verse 4 (skanda.1.109.4)

sthāpitāni ca liṁgāni svayaṁbhūni ca dṛṣṭavān tatratatra mahābhāge tīrthāni śivasannidhau

There and there, in the fords near Shiva's presence, I beheld the lingas both established by others and those self-manifest, O most blessed one.

Verse 5 (skanda.1.109.5)

sevamānaḥ saśiṣyo'haṁ paryaṭanpṛthivīmimām evaṁ tīrthāni sarvāṇi gāhamāno vratānvitaḥ

Serving thus with my disciples, wandering across this earth, immersing myself in all the fords, bound to my vows,

Verse 6 (skanda.1.109.6)

tapāṁsi yajñakarmāṇi kurvanbhūmiṁ samācaran śivasmaraṇasaṁyuktaḥ śivaliṁgāni sannaman

performing austerities and sacrificial rites, traversing the land, joined to the remembrance of Shiva, bowing well before the Shiva-lingas,

Verse 7 (skanda.1.109.7)

sarvāṇi bhuvi puṇyāni deśametamupāśrayam atra devaṁ mahādevamavikeśaṁ triyaṁbakam

after all the sacred places of the earth, I took refuge in this very land; here the God Mahadeva, unfading, three-eyed —

Verse 8 (skanda.1.109.8)

aruṇādriritikhyātaṁ parvataṁ liṁgamaikṣiṣi atra siddhā mahātmāno munayaśca dṛḍhavratāḥ

— the mountain renowned by the name Arunadri, itself in the form of a linga, I beheld; here siddhas, great souls, and sages of firm vow —

Verse 9 (skanda.1.109.9)

kaṁdamūlaphalāhārā dṛṣṭāḥ śoṇādri sevakāḥ astauṣamādimaṁ liṁgamaruṇādrimayaṁ mahat

— living on roots, bulbs, and fruit, servants of Shonadri, appeared before me; I praised that great, primal linga in the form of Arunadri.

Verse 10 (skanda.1.109.10)

ādyena brahmaṇā pūrvamarcitaṁ divyacakṣuṣā asau yastāmro aruṇa uta babhruḥ sumaṁgalaḥ

— this linga, worshipped of old by the primal Brahma with his very divine eyes — 'He who is copper-hued, ruddy, or tawny, of surpassing auspiciousness' —

Verse 11 (skanda.1.109.11)

iti vedā stuvaṁti tvāmaruṇādrīśa saṁtatam namastāmrāya cāruṇāya śivāya paramātmane

— thus do the Vedas ceaselessly praise you, O Lord of the red mountain; salutation to the coppery, ruddy Shiva, the supreme Self.

Verse 12 (skanda.1.109.12)

sarvavedasvarūpāya nityāyāmṛtamūrttaye kālāya karuṇārdrāya dṛṣṭipeyāmṛtābdhaye

Salutation to you, the very form of all the Vedas, eternal, of immortal form, of the nature of time itself, moist with compassion, an ocean of nectar to be drunk by the mere sight.

Verse 13 (skanda.1.109.13)

bhaktavātsalyapūrṇāya puṇyāya purabhedine darśanaṁ tava deveśa sarvadharmaphalapradam

ekamadrimayaṁ liṁgaṁ na kvaciddṛṣṭavānbhuvi sūryeṁdvagnisusaṁyukta koṇatrayamanoharam

vitaratyakhilānbhogānvyājakaruṇānidhiḥ arcayā rahitaṁ liṁgamanyaṁ śūnyamudāhṛtam

'— this ocean of veiled compassion bestows every enjoyment; whereas any other linga devoid of worship is spoken of as merely void.'
