Vaishnava Khanda · Chapter 110
Satyabhama's Previous Birth and the Glory of Prayaga
Verse 1 (skanda.2.110.1)
sūta uvāca śriyaḥ patimathāmaṁtrya gate devarṣisattame harṣotphullā''nanā satyā vāsudevamathā'bravīt
Suta said: Then, when the best of divine sages, having taken leave of the Lord of Shri, had departed, Satya, her face blossoming with joy, spoke to Vasudeva:
Verse 2 (skanda.2.110.2)
satyabhāmovāca dhanyāsmi kṛtakṛtyā'smi saphalaṁ jīvitaṁ mama dānaṁ vrataṁ tapo vā'pi kiṁ nu pūrvaṁ kṛtaṁ mayā
Satyabhama said: I am blessed, I am fulfilled, my life is fruitful. What gift, or vow, or austerity did I perform before —
Verse 3 (skanda.2.110.3)
yenā'haṁ martyajā deva tavāṁgārddhaharā'bhavam bhavāṁtare ca kiṁśīlā kācā'haṁ kasya kanyakā tavā'haṁ vallabhā jātā tadvadasva mamā'khilam
— by which I, born a mortal, O Lord, became the possessor of half your body? And in a former existence, what was my character, who was I, whose daughter? Tell me all this, since I have become your beloved.
Verse 4 (skanda.2.110.4)
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca śṛṇuṣvaikamanā kāṁte yathā tvaṁ pūrvajanmani
Sri Krishna said: Listen with a single mind, O beloved, how you, in a former birth,
Verse 5 (skanda.2.110.5)
puṇyavrataṁ kṛtavatī tatsarvaṁ kathayāmi te āsītkṛtayugasyāṁte māyāpuryāṁ dvijottamaḥ
performed a meritorious vow — I shall tell you all of it. At the end of the Krita age, in the city of Mayapuri, there was an excellent brahmin,
Verse 6 (skanda.2.110.6)
ātreyo devaśarmeti vedavedāṁgapāragaḥ tasyātivayasaścā''sīnnāmnā guṇavatī sutā
of the Atri lineage, named Devasharma, learned in the Vedas and Vedangas. He, of advanced age, had a daughter named Gunavati.
Verse 7 (skanda.2.110.7)
aputraḥ sa svaśiṣyāya caṁdranāmne dadau sutām tameva putravanmene sa ca taṁ pitṛvadvaśī
Being without a son, he gave his daughter to his own disciple, named Chandra; he regarded him as a son, and that obedient disciple regarded him as a father.
Verse 8 (skanda.2.110.8)
tau kadācidvanaṁ yātau kuśedhmāharaṇārthinau nihatau rakṣasā tau ca kṛtāṁtasamarūpiṇā
Once the two of them went to the forest to gather kusha grass and fuel-wood; they were both killed by a rakshasa who had the very form of Death.
Verse 9 (skanda.2.110.9)
svasvapuṇya prabhāvena viṣṇulokaṁ gatāvubhau tato guṇavatī śrutvā rakṣasā nihatāvubhau
By the power of their respective merits, both of them went to the world of Vishnu. Then Gunavati, having heard that both had been slain by the rakshasa,
Verse 10 (skanda.2.110.10)
pitṛbhartṛjaduḥkhārtā kāruṇyaṁ paryadevayat sā gṛhopaskarā nsarvānvikrīyāśu ca karmaṁ tat
tormented by grief for her father and husband, lamented most piteously. She quickly sold all the household goods,
Verse 11 (skanda.2.110.11)
tayoścakre yathāśakti pāralaukīṁ tataḥ kriyām tasminneva pure cakre vāsaṁ sā mṛtajīvinī
and performed, according to her means, the rites for the other world; and she, though bereft, continued to dwell in that very city.
Verse 12 (skanda.2.110.12)
vratadvayaṁ tayā samyagājanmamaraṇātkṛtam ekādaśīvrataṁ samyaksevanaṁ kārtikasya ca
She duly performed two vows, from birth until death: the Ekadashi vow, and the proper observance of Kartika.
Verse 13 (skanda.2.110.13)
itthaṁ guṇavatī samyakpratyabda vratinī hyabhūt kadācitsarujā sā'tha kṛśāṁgī jvarapīḍitā
Thus Gunavati duly kept these vows every year. Once, afflicted, her body wasted, tormented by fever,
Verse 14 (skanda.2.110.14)
snātuṁ gaṁgāṁ gatā kāṁte kathaṁcicchanakaistadā yāvajjalāṁtaragatā kaṁpitā śītapīḍitā
she went, O beloved, somehow slowly, to bathe in the Ganga; as she went into the water, trembling, afflicted by the cold,
Verse 15 (skanda.2.110.15)
tāvatsā vihvalā'paśyadvimānaṁ yātamaṁbarāt atha sā tadvimānasthā vaikuṇṭhabhuvanaṁ yayau
then, overwhelmed, she saw a celestial chariot descending from the sky; then, seated in that chariot, she went to the realm of Vaikuntha.
Verse 16 (skanda.2.110.16)
kārtikavratapuṇyena matsānnidhyaṁ gatā'bhavat atha brahmādidevānāṁ yadā prārthanayā bhuvam
By the merit of the Kartika vow, she came into my very presence. Now, when, at the entreaty of Brahma and the other gods,
Verse 17 (skanda.2.110.17)
āgato'haṁ gaṇāḥ sarve yātāste'pi mayā saha ete hi yādavāḥ sarve madgaṇā eva bhāmini
I came to the earth, all her companions came with me too; for, O lady, all these Yadavas are indeed my own attendants.
Verse 18 (skanda.2.110.18)
pitā te devaśarmā'bhūtsatrājidabhidho hyayam yaścaṁdranāmā'so'krūrastvaṁ sā guṇavatī śubhā
Your father Devasharma became this one named Satrajit; and he who was named Chandra became this Akrura; and you were that auspicious Gunavati.
Verse 19 (skanda.2.110.19)
kārtikavratapuṇyena bahu matprītidāyinī maddvāri yattvayā pūrvaṁ tulasīvāṭikā kṛtā
By the merit of the Kartika vow, you have given me much delight. Because you formerly made a tulasi-garden at my door,
Verse 20 (skanda.2.110.20)
tasmādayaṁ kalpavṛkṣastavāṁgaṇagataḥ śubhe ājanmamaraṇātpūrvaṁ yatkṛtaṁ kārtikavratam
therefore, O auspicious one, this wish-fulfilling tree stands in your courtyard. Because of the Kartika vow you performed from birth until death,
Verse 21 (skanda.2.110.21)
kadācidapi tena tvaṁ madviyogaṁ na yāsyasi satyovāca māsānāṁ tu kathaṁ nāma sa māsaḥ kārtiko varaḥ
by that, you shall never at any time be separated from me. Satya said: But how, indeed, is that month, Kartika, the best of months —
Verse 22 (skanda.2.110.22)
priyaste devadeveśa kāraṇaṁ tatra kathyatām śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca sādhu pṛṣṭaṁ tvayā kāṁte śṛṇuṣvaikāgramānasā
— it is dear to you, O Lord of the gods of gods, tell me the reason for that. Sri Krishna said: Well have you asked, O beloved; listen with a focused mind.
Verse 23 (skanda.2.110.23)
pṛthorvainyasya saṁvādaṁ maharṣernāradasya ca evameva purā pṛṣṭo nāradaḥ pṛthunābravīt
Hear the dialogue between Prithu, son of Vena, and the great sage Narada. In just this way, long ago, Narada, being asked by Prithu, spoke:
Verse 24 (skanda.2.110.24)
nārada uvāca śaṁkhanāmā'bhavatpūrvamasuraḥ sāgarātmajaḥ indrādilokapālānāmadhikārāñjahāra ha
Narada said: Long ago there was a demon named Shankha, son of the ocean; he seized the authority of Indra and the other guardians of the world.
Verse 25 (skanda.2.110.25)
suvarṇādriguhādurgasaṁsthitāstridaśādayaḥ tadvīkṣayāṁbabhūvuste tadā daityo vyacārayat
The gods and the rest, dwelling in the impregnable caves of the golden mountain, began to watch for an opportunity; then the demon reflected:
Verse 26 (skanda.2.110.26)
hṛtādhikārāstridaśā mayā yadyapi nirjitāḥ lakṣyaṁte balayuktāste karaṇīyaṁ mayā'tra kim
'Although the gods, deprived of their authority, have been conquered by me, they still appear to possess strength; what should I do about this?'
Verse 27 (skanda.2.110.27)
jñātaṁ tattu mayā devā vedamantrabalānvitāḥ tānhariṣye tataḥ sarve balahīnā bhavaṁti vai
'I have realized this: the gods possess the strength of the Vedic mantras; I shall steal them, and then they will all indeed become powerless.'
Verse 28 (skanda.2.110.28)
iti matvā tato daityo viṣṇumālakṣya nidritam satyalokājjahārāśu vedānādisvayaṁbhuvaḥ
Having thought thus, the demon, observing Vishnu asleep, quickly stole the Vedas of the primordial Self-born from Satyaloka.
Verse 29 (skanda.2.110.29)
nītāstu tena te vedāstadbhayātte nirākraman toyāni viviśuryajñamaṁtrabījasamanvitāḥ
Carried off by him, those Vedas, out of fear of him, fled away; possessed of the seed-mantras of sacrifice, they entered the waters.
Verse 30 (skanda.2.110.30)
tānmārgamāṇaḥ śaṁkho'pi samudrāṁtargato bhraman na dadarśa tadā daityaḥ kvacidekatra saṁsthitān atha devaiḥ stuto viṣṇurbodhitastānuvāca ha
Shankha, searching for them, wandered within the ocean, but the demon could not find them gathered anywhere in one place. Then Vishnu, praised by the gods, awakened, spoke to them:
Verse 31 (skanda.2.110.31)
viṣṇuruvāca varado'haṁ suragaṇā gītavādyādimaṁgalaiḥ
Vishnu said: O hosts of gods, I grant a boon, since by song, music, and other auspicious things,
Verse 32 (skanda.2.110.32)
ūrjasya śuklaikādaśyāṁ bhavadbhiḥ pratibodhitaḥ ataścaiṣā tithirmānyā sā'tīva prītidā mama
I have been awakened by you on the bright Ekadashi of Urja; therefore this tithi is to be honored — it is exceedingly pleasing to me.
Verse 33 (skanda.2.110.33)
vedāḥ śaṁkhahṛtāḥ sarve tiṣṭhaṁtyudakasaṁsthitāḥ tānānayāmyahaṁ devā hatvā sāgaranaṁdanam
All the Vedas stolen by Shankha remain within the waters; I shall bring them back, O gods, having slain the son of the ocean.
Verse 34 (skanda.2.110.34)
adyaprabhṛti vedāstu maṁtrabījasamanvitāḥ pratyabdaṁ kārtike māsi viśramaṁtvapsu sarvadā
From today onward, may the Vedas, possessed of the seed-mantras, always rest within the waters, every year, in the month of Kartika.
Verse 35 (skanda.2.110.35)
kāle'sminye prakurvaṁti prātaḥsnānaṁ narottamāḥ te sarve yajñā'vabhṛthaiḥ susnātāḥ syurna saṁśayaḥ
Those excellent men who perform the morning bath at this time — all of them shall be as well-bathed as with the concluding bath of a sacrifice; there is no doubt.
Verse 36 (skanda.2.110.36)
adyaprabhṛtyahamapi bhavāmi jalamadhyagaḥ bhavanto'pi mayā sārddhamāyāṁtu samunīśvarāḥ
From today onward, I too shall dwell within the water; you too, O lords of sages, come together with me.
Verse 37 (skanda.2.110.37)
kātikavratināṁ ceṁdra rakṣā kāryā tvayā sadā ityuktvā bhagavānviṣṇuḥ śapharītulyarūpadhṛk khātpapāta jale viṁdhyavāsinaḥ kasya paśyataḥ
'And, O Indra, the protection of the observers of the Kartika vow should always be undertaken by you.' Having said this, the Lord Vishnu, assuming a form like a small fish, fell from the sky into the water, before the very eyes of a dweller of the Vindhya.
Verse 38 (skanda.2.110.38)
hatvā śaṁkhāsuraṁ viṣṇurbadarīvanamāgamat tatrā''hūya ṛṣīnsarvānidamājñāpayatprabhuḥ
Having slain the demon Shankha, Vishnu came to Badarikashrama; there, having summoned all the sages, the Lord commanded this:
Verse 39 (skanda.2.110.39)
viṣṇuruvāca jalāṁtaraviśīrṇāṁstānyūyaṁ vedānpramārgatha ānayadhvaṁ ca tvaritāḥ sāgarasya jalāṁtarāt tāvatprayāgaṁ tiṣṭhāmi devatāgaṇasaṁyutaḥ
Vishnu said: Search for those Vedas, scattered within the waters; and quickly bring them from within the ocean's waters. Meanwhile I shall remain at Prayaga, together with the host of gods.
Verse 40 (skanda.2.110.40)
nārada uvāca tatastaissarvamunibhistapobalasamanvitaiḥ
Narada said: Then by all those sages, possessed of the power of austerity,
Verse 41 (skanda.2.110.41)
uddhṛtāśca sabījāste vedā yajñasamanvitāḥ teṣu yāvanmitaṁ yena labdhaṁ tāvaddhi tasya tat
the Vedas, with their seed-mantras, joined with the sacrifice, were recovered; and whatever portion of them each sage recovered, that indeed became his own,
Verse 42 (skanda.2.110.42)
sa sa eva ṛṣirjātastattatprabhṛti pārthiva atha sarve'pi saṁgamya prayāgaṁ munayo yayuḥ
and from that time onward, O king, each such sage became the seer of that portion. Then all the sages, having gathered together, went to Prayaga,
Verse 43 (skanda.2.110.43)
viṣṇave savidhātre te labdhānvedānnyavedayan labdhvā vedānsamagrāṁstu brahmā harṣasamanvitaḥ
and presented the recovered Vedas to Vishnu, together with Brahma. Having obtained the Vedas in their entirety, Brahma, filled with joy,
Verse 44 (skanda.2.110.44)
ayajadvājimedhena devarṣigaṇasaṁyutaḥ yajñāṁ'te devatāḥ sarve vijñaptiṁ cakruraṁjasā
performed a sacrifice with the Ashvamedha, joined by the hosts of gods and sages. At the end of the sacrifice, all the gods duly made a petition:
Verse 45 (skanda.2.110.45)
devā ūcuḥ devadeva jagannātha vijñaptiṁ śṛṇu naḥ prabho harṣakālo'yamasmākaṁ tasmāttvaṁ varado bhava
The gods said: O God of gods, Lord of the universe, hear our petition, O Lord; this is a time of joy for us; therefore grant us a boon.
Verse 46 (skanda.2.110.46)
sthāne'smindruhiṇo vedānnaṣṭānprāpa punastvayam yajñabhāgānvayaṁ prāptāstvatprasādādramāpate
In this place, Brahma recovered the lost Vedas again through you; we too have obtained our shares of the sacrifice by your grace, O Lord of Rama.
Verse 47 (skanda.2.110.47)
sthānametaddhi naḥ śreṣṭhaṁ pṛthivyāṁ puṇyavardhanam bhuktimuktipradaṁ cā'stu prasādādbhavataḥ sadā
This place is indeed the most excellent for us on earth, increasing merit; may it always, by your grace, bestow both enjoyment and liberation.
Verse 48 (skanda.2.110.48)
kālo'pyayaṁ mahāpuṇyo brahmaghnā''diviśuddhikṛt dattā'kṣayakaraṁ cā'stu varamevaṁ dadasva naḥ
May this time too be greatly meritorious, purifying even the killer of a brahmin and the like; may whatever is given here become imperishable — grant us this very boon.
Verse 49 (skanda.2.110.49)
viṣṇuruvāca mamāpyetadvṛtaṁ devā yadbhavadbhirudāhṛtam tathāstu sulabhaṁ tvetadbrahmakṣetramitipratham
Vishnu said: O gods, this too is my own resolve, which you have declared; so be it. This shall be easily accessible, and shall first be renowned as the field of Brahma.
Verse 50 (skanda.2.110.50)
sūryavaṁśodbhavo rājā gaṁgāmatrānayiṣyati sā sūryakanyayā cātra kāliṁdyā yogameṣyati
A king born of the solar dynasty will bring the Ganga here; and she will unite here with the daughter of the Sun, the Kalindi.
Verse 51 (skanda.2.110.51)
yūyaṁ ca sarve brahmādyā nivasaṁtu mayā saha tīrtharājeti vikhyātaṁ tīrthametadbhaviṣyati
And all of you, beginning with Brahma, shall dwell here together with me; this tirtha shall become renowned as the King of Tirthas.
Verse 52 (skanda.2.110.52)
sarvapāpāni naśyaṁti tīrtharājasya darśanāt sūrye makarage prāpte snāyināṁ pāpanāśanaḥ
All sins are destroyed by the sight of the King of Tirthas; when the sun has entered Capricorn, it is a destroyer of sin for those who bathe.
Verse 53 (skanda.2.110.53)
kālo'pyeṣa mahāpuṇyaphalado'stu sadā nṛṇām sālokyādiphalaṁ snānairmāghe makarage ravau
May this time too always bestow the fruit of great merit upon men; through bathing in Magha, when the sun is in Capricorn, one obtains the fruit of dwelling in the same world as Vishnu and the like.
Verse 54 (skanda.2.110.54)
nārada uvāca evaṁ devāndevadevastaduktvā tatraivāṁtardhānamāgātsavedhāḥ devāḥ sarvepyaṁśakaiste'pyatiṣṭhaṁścāṁtardhānaṁ prāpuriṁdrādayaste
Narada said: Having thus spoken to the gods, the God of gods, together with the Creator, vanished from that very place; all the gods too, in their partial forms, remained there, while the fullness of Indra and the rest passed into invisibility.
Verse 55 (skanda.2.110.55)
kārtike tulasīmūle yo'rcayeddharimīśvaram bhuktveha nikhilānbhogānaṁte viṣṇupuraṁ vrajet
Whoever, in Kartika, worships the Lord Hari at the foot of tulasi, having enjoyed here all pleasures, goes at the end to the city of Vishnu.
