Chapter 110All chaptersChapter 112

Verse 1 (skanda.2.111.1)

pṛthuruvāca yattvayā kathitaṁ brahmanvratamūrjasya vistarāt tatra yā tulasīmūle viṣṇoḥ pūjā tvayoditā

Prithu said: O Brahman, regarding the vow of Urja that you have told in detail, in which you have declared the worship of Vishnu at the root of tulasi —

Verse 2 (skanda.2.111.2)

tenā'haṁ praṣṭumicchāmi māhātmyaṁ tulasībhavam kathaṁ sā'tipriyā tasya devadevasya śārṅgiṇaḥ

— because of that, I wish to ask the greatness arising from tulasi: how is she so exceedingly dear to that god of gods, the wielder of the Sharnga bow?

Verse 3 (skanda.2.111.3)

kathameṣā samutpannā kasminsthāne ca nārada evaṁ brūhi samāsena sarvajño'si mato mama

How did she come into being, and in what place, O Narada? Tell me this concisely; I consider you all-knowing.

Verse 4 (skanda.2.111.4)

nārada uvāca śṛṇu rājannavahito māhātmyaṁ tulasībhavam setihāsaṁ purāvṛttaṁ tatsarvaṁ kathayāmi te

Narada said: Listen attentively, O king, to the greatness arising from tulasi; I shall tell you all of it, together with the ancient story that occurred long ago.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.111.5)

purā śakraḥ śivaṁ draṣṭumagātkailāsaparvatam sarvadevaiḥ parivṛto hyapsarogaṇasevitaḥ

Long ago Indra went to Mount Kailasa to see Shiva, surrounded by all the gods, attended by hosts of Apsarases.

Verse 6 (skanda.2.111.6)

yāvadgataḥ śivagṛhaṁ tāvattatra sa dṛṣṭavān puruṣaṁ bhīmakarmāṇaṁ daṁṣṭrā''nanavibhīṣaṇam

As soon as he arrived at Shiva's abode, he saw there a person of terrifying deeds, whose face, with fangs, was fearsome.

Verse 7 (skanda.2.111.7)

sa pṛṣṭastena kastvaṁ bhoḥ kva gato jagadīśvaraḥ evaṁ punaḥ punaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ sa tadā noktavānnṛpa

He was asked by him: 'Who are you? Where has the Lord of the universe gone?' Thus asked again and again, that man, O king, then gave no answer.

Verse 8 (skanda.2.111.8)

tataḥ kuddho vajrapāṇistaṁ nirbhartsya vaco'bravīt re mayā pṛcchayamāno'pi nottaraṁ dattavānasi

Then Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, enraged, having reviled him, spoke these words: 'Hey, though questioned by me, you have given no answer!'

Verse 9 (skanda.2.111.9)

atastvāṁ hanmi vajreṇa kaste trātā'sti durmate ityudīrya tato vajrī vajreṇā'bhyahanaddṛḍham

'Therefore I shall strike you with my thunderbolt, O evil-minded one — who is there to save you!' Having said this, the wielder of the thunderbolt then struck him firmly with the vajra.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.111.10)

tenāsya kaṇṭho nīlatvamagādvajraṁ ca bhasmatām tato rudraḥ prajajvāla tejasā pradahanniva

By this, his throat turned blue, and the thunderbolt was reduced to ashes; then Rudra blazed forth, as if burning everything with his fiery energy.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.111.11)

dṛṣṭvā bṛhaspatistūrṇaṁ kṛtāṁjalipuṭo'bhavat indraṁ ca daṁḍavadbhūmau kṛtvā stotuṁ pracakrame

Seeing this, Brihaspati quickly joined his palms in reverence; and, having made Indra prostrate flat on the ground, he began to offer praise:

Verse 12 (skanda.2.111.12)

bṛhaspatiruvāca namo devādhipataye tryaṁbakāya kapardine tripuraghnāya śarvāya namo'dhaṁkaniṣūdine

Brihaspati said: Salutation to the Lord of the gods, to the three-eyed one, to the one with matted locks; to the destroyer of Tripura, to Sharva, salutation to the slayer of Andhaka,

Verse 13 (skanda.2.111.13)

virūpāyā'tirūpāya bahurūpāya śaṁbhave yajñavidhvaṁsakartre ca yajñānāṁ phaladāyine

to the one of no fixed form, to the one of surpassing form, to the one of many forms, to Shambhu; to the destroyer of sacrifice, and the bestower of the fruit of sacrifices,

Verse 14 (skanda.2.111.14)

kālāṁtakāya kālāya kālabhogidharāya ca namo brahmaśirohaṁtre brāhmaṇāya namo namaḥ

to the ender of Time, to Time himself, to the wearer of the time-serpent; salutation to the one who severed Brahma's head, to the Brahmin — salutation, salutation.

Verse 15 (skanda.2.111.15)

nārada uvāca evaṁ stutastadā śaṁbhurdhiṣaṇena jagāda tam saṁharannayanajvālāṁ trilokīdahana kṣamām

Narada said: Thus praised, Shambhu, withdrawing the flame of his eye, capable of burning the three worlds, then spoke to Brihaspati:

Verse 16 (skanda.2.111.16)

varaṁ varaya bho brahmanprītaḥ stutyā'nayā tava indrasya jīvadānena jīveti tvaṁ prathāṁ vajra

'Choose a boon, O Brahman; I am pleased by this praise of yours.' At the plea for Indra's life, he said: 'Live, O wielder of the vajra' — thus he granted him renewed life.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.111.17)

bṛhaspatiruvāca yadi tuṣṭo'si deva tvaṁ pāhīṁdraṁ śaraṇāgatam agnireṣa śamaṁ yātu bhālanetrasamudbhavaḥ

Brihaspati said: If you are pleased, O god, protect Indra, who has come for refuge; may this fire, arisen from your forehead-eye, be pacified.

Verse 18 (skanda.2.111.18)

īśvara uvāca punaḥ praveśamāyāti bhālanetre kathaṁ śikhī enaṁ tyakṣyāmyahaṁ dūre yatheṁdraṁ naiva pīḍayet

Ishvara said: How can this fire re-enter my forehead-eye? I shall cast it far away, so that it does not afflict Indra.

Verse 19 (skanda.2.111.19)

nārada uvāca ityuktvā taṁ kare dhṛtvā prākṣipallavaṇārṇave so'patatsiṁdhugaṁgāyāḥ sāgarasya ca saṁgame

Narada said: Having said this, taking hold of it in his hand, he cast it into the salt ocean; it fell at the confluence of the river Sindhu-Ganga with the sea.

Verse 20 (skanda.2.111.20)

tāvatsa bālarūpatvamagāttatra ruroda ca rudatastasya śabdena prākaṁpaddharaṇī muhuḥ

Then it assumed the form of an infant there, and wept; and by the sound of its weeping, the earth trembled again and again.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.111.21)

svargādyāḥ satyalokāṁtāstatsvanādbadhirīkṛtāḥ śrutvā brahmā yayau tatra kimetaditi vismitaḥ

The worlds from heaven up to Satyaloka were deafened by that sound; hearing it, Brahma, astonished, wondering 'what is this?', went there.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.111.22)

tāvatsamudrasyotsaṁge taṁ bālaṁ sa dadarśa ha dṛṣṭvā brahmāṇamāyātaṁ samudro'pi kṛtāṁjaliḥ

Then he saw that infant on the ocean's lap; seeing Brahma approaching, the ocean too, with joined palms,

Verse 23 (skanda.2.111.23)

praṇamya śirasā bālaṁ tasyotsaṁge nyaveśayat bho brahmansiṁdhugaṁgāyāṁ jāto'yaṁ mama putrakaḥ jātakarmā''disaṁskārānkuruṣvā'dya jagadguro

having bowed his head, placed the infant in Brahma's lap: 'O Brahman, this child, born in the Sindhu-Ganga, is my own son; O guru of the world, perform for him today the birth-rites and other sacraments.'

Verse 24 (skanda.2.111.24)

nārada uvāca itthaṁ vadati pāthodhau sa bālaḥ sāgarātmajaḥ

Narada said: While the ocean spoke thus, that infant, the ocean's son,

Verse 25 (skanda.2.111.25)

brahmāṇamagrahītkūrce vidhunvaṁstaṁ muhurmuhuḥ dhunvatastasya kūrce tu netrābhyāmagamajjalam kathaṁcinmuktakūrco'tha brahmā provāca sāgaram

seized Brahma by his beard, shaking it again and again; and as the child shook his beard, water came from Brahma's eyes. Somehow having freed his beard, Brahma then spoke to the ocean:

Verse 26 (skanda.2.111.26)

brahmovāca netrābhyāṁ vidhṛtaṁ yasmādanenaitajjalaṁ mama tasmājjalaṁdhara iti khyāto nāmnā bhaviṣyati

Brahma said: Because this water of mine was drawn from my eyes by him, therefore he shall become known by the name Jalandhara.

Verse 27 (skanda.2.111.27)

anenaivaiṣa taruṇaḥ sarvaśastrāstrapāragaḥ avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ vinā rudraṁ bhaviṣyati

By this very birth, he, when grown, shall become master of all weapons and missiles, invincible to all beings, except Rudra.

Verse 28 (skanda.2.111.28)

yata eṣa samudbhūtastatraivāṁtaṁ gamiṣyati nārada uvāca ityuktvā śukramāhūya rājye taṁ cābhyaṣecayat āmaṁtrya saritāṁ nāthaṁ brahmāṁtardhānamāgamat

From wherever he arose, there indeed he shall meet his end. Narada said: Having said this, having summoned Shukra, Brahma consecrated him in kingship; and, having taken leave of the lord of rivers, Brahma vanished.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.111.29)

atha taddarśanotphullanayanaḥ sāgarastadā kālanemisutāṁ vṛṁdāṁ tadbhāryārthamayācata

Then the ocean, his eyes blossoming with joy at seeing this, requested Vrinda, the daughter of Kalanemi, to be his wife.

Verse 30 (skanda.2.111.30)

te kālanemipramukhāstato'surāstasmai sutāṁ tāṁ pradaduḥ praharṣitāḥ sa cā'pi tāṁ prāpya suhṛdvarāṁ vaśāṁ śaśāsa gāṁ śukrasahāyavānbalī

Then those demons, headed by Kalanemi, greatly delighted, gave that daughter to him; and he too, having obtained her, an excellent and devoted friend, ruled the earth, powerful, with Shukra as his ally.
