The Attainment of Jalandhara's Victory

Verse 1 (skanda.2.112.1)

नारद उवाच । ये देवैर्निर्जिताः पूर्वं दैत्याः पातालसंस्थिताः । तेऽपि भूमंडलं याता निर्भयास्तमुपाश्रिताः

nārada uvāca ye devairnirjitāḥ pūrvaṁ daityāḥ pātālasaṁsthitāḥ te'pi bhūmaṁḍalaṁ yātā nirbhayāstamupāśritāḥ

Narada said: Those demons who had formerly been conquered by the gods and were dwelling in Patala, they too, fearless, came up to the earth's surface and took refuge with him.

Verse 2 (skanda.2.112.2)

कदाचिच्छिन्नशिरसं राहुं दृष्ट्वा स दैत्यराट् । पप्रच्छ भार्गवं तत्र तच्छिरश्छेदकारणम्

kadācicchinnaśirasaṁ rāhuṁ dṛṣṭvā sa daityarāṭ papraccha bhārgavaṁ tatra tacchiraśchedakāraṇam

Once, seeing Rahu with his severed head, that king of the daityas asked Bhargava there the reason for the severing of his head.

Verse 3 (skanda.2.112.3)

स शशंस समुद्रस्य मथनं देवकारितम् । रत्नापहरणं चैव दैत्यानां च पराभवम्

sa śaśaṁsa samudrasya mathanaṁ devakāritam ratnāpaharaṇaṁ caiva daityānāṁ ca parābhavam

He recounted the churning of the ocean brought about by the gods, and the seizing of the jewels, and the defeat of the demons.

Verse 4 (skanda.2.112.4)

स श्रुत्वा क्रोधरक्ताक्षः स्वपितुर्मथनं तदा । दूतं संप्रेषयामास घस्मरं शक्रसन्निधौ

sa śrutvā krodharaktākṣaḥ svapiturmathanaṁ tadā dūtaṁ saṁpreṣayāmāsa ghasmaraṁ śakrasannidhau

Having heard of the churning of his own father, his eyes red with rage, he then sent a messenger named Ghasmara to Indra's presence.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.112.5)

दूतस्त्रिविष्टपं गत्वा सुधर्मां प्राविशद्वराम् । जगादाखर्वमौलिस्तु देवेंद्रं वाक्यमद्भुतम्

dūtastriviṣṭapaṁ gatvā sudharmāṁ prāviśadvarām jagādākharvamaulistu deveṁdraṁ vākyamadbhutam

The messenger, going to heaven, entered the excellent assembly hall Sudharma; and, his head unbowed, spoke astonishing words to the lord of gods:

Verse 6 (skanda.2.112.6)

घस्मर उवाच । जलंधरोऽब्धितनयः सर्वदैत्यजनेश्वरः । दूतोऽहंप्रेषितस्तेन स यदाह शृणुष्व तत्

ghasmara uvāca jalaṁdharo'bdhitanayaḥ sarvadaityajaneśvaraḥ dūto'haṁpreṣitastena sa yadāha śṛṇuṣva tat

Ghasmara said: I am the messenger sent by Jalandhara, son of the ocean, lord of all the demon folk; hear what he has said:

Verse 7 (skanda.2.112.7)

कस्मात्त्वया मम पिता मथितः सागरोऽद्रिणा । नीतानि सर्वरत्नानि तानि शीघ्रं प्रयच्छ मे

kasmāttvayā mama pitā mathitaḥ sāgaro'driṇā nītāni sarvaratnāni tāni śīghraṁ prayaccha me

'Why was my father, the ocean, churned by you with the mountain? All the jewels that were taken — give them to me at once.'

Verse 8 (skanda.2.112.8)

इति दूतवचः श्रुत्वा विस्मितस्त्रिदशाधिपः । उवाच घस्मरं रौद्रं भयरोषसमन्वितः

iti dūtavacaḥ śrutvā vismitastridaśādhipaḥ uvāca ghasmaraṁ raudraṁ bhayaroṣasamanvitaḥ

Hearing the messenger's words, the lord of the gods, astonished, filled with both fear and anger, spoke to the fierce Ghasmara:

Verse 9 (skanda.2.112.9)

इंद्र उवाच । शृणु दूत मया पूर्वं मथितः सागरो यथा । अद्रयो मद्भयात्त्रस्ताः स्वकुक्षिस्थाः कृतास्तथा

iṁdra uvāca śṛṇu dūta mayā pūrvaṁ mathitaḥ sāgaro yathā adrayo madbhayāttrastāḥ svakukṣisthāḥ kṛtāstathā

Indra said: Hear, O messenger, how the ocean was formerly churned by me. The mountains, terrified by fear of me, were likewise made to reside within his belly.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.112.10)

अन्येऽपि मद्द्विषस्तेन रक्षिता दितिजाः पुरा । तस्माद्यत्तत्प्रजातं तु मयाऽप्यपहृतं किल

anye'pi maddviṣastena rakṣitā ditijāḥ purā tasmādyattatprajātaṁ tu mayā'pyapahṛtaṁ kila

By him too, my other enemies, the sons of Diti, were formerly protected; therefore whatever was produced from the churning was indeed taken by me as well.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.112.11)

शंखोऽप्येवं पुरा देवानद्विषत्सागरात्मजः । ममाऽनुजेन निहतः प्रविष्टः सागरोदरम्

śaṁkho'pyevaṁ purā devānadviṣatsāgarātmajaḥ mamā'nujena nihataḥ praviṣṭaḥ sāgarodaram

Likewise, Shankha, the ocean's son, long ago hated the gods; he was slain by my younger brother and returned into the belly of the ocean.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.112.12)

तद्गच्छ कथयस्वाऽस्य सर्वं मथनकारणम् । नारद उवाच । इत्थं विसर्जितो दूतस्तदेंद्रेणाऽगमद्भुवम्

tadgaccha kathayasvā'sya sarvaṁ mathanakāraṇam nārada uvāca itthaṁ visarjito dūtastadeṁdreṇā'gamadbhuvam

'Therefore go and tell him the whole reason for the churning.' Narada said: Thus dismissed by Indra, the messenger then went to the earth.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.112.13)

तदिदं वचनं सर्वं दैत्यायाकथयत्तदा । तन्निशम्य तदा दैत्यो रोषात्प्रस्फुरिताऽधरः

tadidaṁ vacanaṁ sarvaṁ daityāyākathayattadā tanniśamya tadā daityo roṣātprasphuritā'dharaḥ

He then related that entire message to the demon. Hearing it, the demon, his lower lip trembling with rage,

Verse 14 (skanda.2.112.14)

दैत्यसेनासमायुक्तो ययौ योद्धुं त्रिविष्टपम् । ततो युद्धे महाञ्जातो देवदानवसंक्षयः

daityasenāsamāyukto yayau yoddhuṁ triviṣṭapam tato yuddhe mahāñjāto devadānavasaṁkṣayaḥ

joined with the army of demons, went to fight against heaven. Then in the battle a great destruction of gods and demons occurred.

Verse 15 (skanda.2.112.15)

तत्र युद्धे मृतान्दैत्यान्भार्गवस्तूदतिष्ठपत् । विद्यया मृतजीविन्या मंत्रितैस्तोयबिंदुभिः

tatra yuddhe mṛtāndaityānbhārgavastūdatiṣṭhapat vidyayā mṛtajīvinyā maṁtritaistoyabiṁdubhiḥ

There in the battle, Bhargava revived the demons who had been slain, by his Mrita-sanjivani knowledge, with water-drops consecrated by mantra.

Verse 16 (skanda.2.112.16)

देवानपि तथा युद्धे तत्राऽजीवयदंगिराः । दिव्यौषधी समानीय द्रोणाद्रेः स पुनःपुनः

devānapi tathā yuddhe tatrā'jīvayadaṁgirāḥ divyauṣadhī samānīya droṇādreḥ sa punaḥpunaḥ

And Angiras likewise revived the gods in that battle, bringing divine herbs again and again from the Drona mountain.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.112.17)

दृष्ट्वा देवांस्तथा युद्धे पुनरेव समुत्थितान् । जलंधरः क्रोधवशो भार्गवं वाक्यमब्रवीत्

dṛṣṭvā devāṁstathā yuddhe punareva samutthitān jalaṁdharaḥ krodhavaśo bhārgavaṁ vākyamabravīt

Seeing the gods thus rising up again and again in the battle, Jalandhara, overcome with anger, spoke these words to Bhargava:

Verse 18 (skanda.2.112.18)

जलंधर उवाच । मया युद्धे हता देवा उत्तिष्ठंति कथं पुनः । तव संजीविनीविद्या न वाऽन्यत्रेति विश्रुतम्

jalaṁdhara uvāca mayā yuddhe hatā devā uttiṣṭhaṁti kathaṁ punaḥ tava saṁjīvinīvidyā na vā'nyatreti viśrutam

Jalandhara said: 'How is it that the gods, slain by me in battle, rise up again? Is your Sanjivani knowledge not renowned as effective elsewhere?'

Verse 19 (skanda.2.112.19)

शुक्र उवाच । दिव्यौषधीः समानीय द्रोणाद्रेरंगिराः सुरान् । जीवयत्येव तच्छीघ्रं द्रोणाद्रिं त्वमपाहर

śukra uvāca divyauṣadhīḥ samānīya droṇādreraṁgirāḥ surān jīvayatyeva tacchīghraṁ droṇādriṁ tvamapāhara

Shukra said: 'Angiras, bringing divine herbs from the Drona mountain, indeed revives the gods thereby, quickly; you should remove the Drona mountain.'

Verse 20 (skanda.2.112.20)

नारद उवाच । इत्युक्तः स तु दैत्येंद्रो नीत्वा द्रोणाचलं तदा । प्राक्षिपत्सागरे तूर्णं पुनरागान्महाहवम्

nārada uvāca ityuktaḥ sa tu daityeṁdro nītvā droṇācalaṁ tadā prākṣipatsāgare tūrṇaṁ punarāgānmahāhavam

Narada said: Thus told, that lord of the daityas, having then taken the Drona mountain, cast it quickly into the ocean, and returned again to the great battle.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.112.21)

अथ देवान्हतान्दृष्ट्वा द्रोणाद्रिमगमद्गुरुः । तावत्तत्र गिरींद्रं तु न ददर्श सुरार्चितः

atha devānhatāndṛṣṭvā droṇādrimagamadguruḥ tāvattatra girīṁdraṁ tu na dadarśa surārcitaḥ

Then, seeing the gods slain, the guru, worshipped by the gods, went to the Drona mountain; but there he could not find that lord of mountains.

Verse 22 (skanda.2.112.22)

ज्ञात्वा दैत्यहृतं द्रोणं धिषणो भयविह्वलः । आगत्य दूराद्व्याजह्रे श्वासाऽऽकुलितविग्रहः

jñātvā daityahṛtaṁ droṇaṁ dhiṣaṇo bhayavihvalaḥ āgatya dūrādvyājahre śvāsā''kulitavigrahaḥ

Knowing that the Drona had been carried off by the demon, Brihaspati, overcome with fear, coming from afar, his body agitated with heavy breathing, cried out:

Verse 23 (skanda.2.112.23)

पलायध्वं हवाद्देवा नाऽयं जेतुं क्षमो यतः । रुद्रांशसंभवो ह्येष स्मरध्वं शक्रचेष्टितम्

palāyadhvaṁ havāddevā nā'yaṁ jetuṁ kṣamo yataḥ rudrāṁśasaṁbhavo hyeṣa smaradhvaṁ śakraceṣṭitam

'Flee from the battle, O gods, for he cannot be conquered; he is indeed born of a portion of Rudra. Remember Indra's deed!'

Verse 24 (skanda.2.112.24)

श्रुत्वा तद्वचनं देवा भयविह्वलितास्तदा । दैत्येन वध्यमानास्ते पलायंते दिशो दश

śrutvā tadvacanaṁ devā bhayavihvalitāstadā daityena vadhyamānāste palāyaṁte diśo daśa

Hearing these words, the gods, overcome with fear, being slain by the demon, fled in the ten directions.

Verse 25 (skanda.2.112.25)

देवान्विद्रावितान्दृष्ट्वा दैत्यैः सागरनंदनः । शंखभेरीजयरवैः प्रविवेशाऽमरावतीम्

devānvidrāvitāndṛṣṭvā daityaiḥ sāgaranaṁdanaḥ śaṁkhabherījayaravaiḥ praviveśā'marāvatīm

Seeing the gods routed by the demons, the son of the ocean entered Amaravati amid the sounds of conch, drum, and cries of victory.

Verse 26 (skanda.2.112.26)

प्रविष्टे नगरीं दैत्ये देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः । सुवर्णाद्रिगुहां प्राप्ता न्यवसन्दैत्यतापिताः

praviṣṭe nagarīṁ daitye devāḥ śakrapurogamāḥ suvarṇādriguhāṁ prāptā nyavasandaityatāpitāḥ

When the demon entered the city, the gods, headed by Indra, reaching a cave of the golden mountain, dwelt there, tormented by the demon.

Verse 27 (skanda.2.112.27)

ततश्च सर्वेष्वसुरोऽधिकारेष्विंद्रादिकानां विनिवेशयत्तदा । शुंभादिकान्दैत्यवरान्पृथक्पृथक्स्वयं सुवर्णाद्रिगुहामगात्पुनः

tataśca sarveṣvasuro'dhikāreṣviṁdrādikānāṁ viniveśayattadā śuṁbhādikāndaityavarānpṛthakpṛthaksvayaṁ suvarṇādriguhāmagātpunaḥ

And then the demon installed excellent demons, beginning with Shumbha, individually in all the offices of Indra and the rest; he himself then went again to the cave of the golden mountain.
