munaya ūcuḥ rathamāruhya tau yātau yadā nāradapārthivau kva yātau cakratuḥ kiṁ vā tanno vada mahāmune
The sages said: When Narada and the king had gone forth mounted on the chariot, where did they go, and what did they do? Tell us this, O great sage.
Verse 2 (skanda.2.54.2)
jaiminiruvāca sārddhaṁ ca vidyāpatinā purohitakanīyasā kṣetrāṁte nīlakaṇṭhasya samīpamupajagmatuḥ
Jaimini said: Together with Vidyapati, the young priest, they came to the vicinity of Nilakantha at the edge of the field.
Verse 3 (skanda.2.54.3)
durnimittamabhūnmārge vrajato'sya mahīkṣitaḥ vāmākṣibhujayoḥ spandaḥ sphuraṇaṁ ca muhurmuhuḥ
An ill omen befell the king as he journeyed on the road: a throbbing and repeated twitching in his left eye and arm.
Verse 4 (skanda.2.54.4)

avyāhataṁ me sāmrājyaṁ prāptaṁ kṣetrottamaṁ tvidam darśanārthaṁ mādhavasya yātreyaṁ tu śubhāvahā
'My sovereignty is unhindered; this excellent field has been reached; this journey for the sight of Madhava is surely auspicious —
Verse 6 (skanda.2.54.6)

akāryaṁ me bhavedadya kiṁ mune brūhi tattvataḥ spandate vāmanetraṁ tu sphurate ca bhujo'sakṛt
'— yet what misfortune could befall me today? Tell me truly, O sage: my left eye throbs, and my arm twitches again and again.'
Verse 7 (skanda.2.54.7)

Having heard this, Narada, indicating the event to come and repeating the auspicious word spoken by Brahma, said —
Verse 8 (skanda.2.54.8)

nārada uvāca mā bhūdviṣādaste bhūpa savighnaṁ prāyaśaḥ śubham vighnāṁte ca śubhaṁ puṁsāṁ punarbhāgyavatāṁ nṛpa
Narada said: 'O King, let there be no despondency; auspicious things are mostly accompanied by obstacles, and at the end of the obstacle, good fortune again comes to fortunate men.'
Verse 9 (skanda.2.54.9)

'This Brahmin Vidyapati, on the very day he beheld him, [saw him] the next evening, covered in golden sand, go down into a dwelling in Patala — now most rare to find in the mortal world.'
Verse 11 (skanda.2.54.11)

They swiftly fanned him with chowries and palm-leaf fans; Narada too, agitated, holding himself steady through the practice of yoga,
Verse 15 (skanda.2.54.15)

kimarthaṁ rājyavibhraṁśo jānataiṣa nvayā kṛtaḥ yātrāsamaya evaitatkathaṁ vā na prakīrtitam
