Jaimini said: Then they, O Brahmins, set out joyfully from the presence of Nilakantha; having duly worshipped that great god and bowed to Shri Durga,

Verse 2 (skanda.2.55.2)

vimucya syaṁdanavaraṁ pādacārāḥ sahānugāḥ āroḍhuṁ nīlabhūmidhraṁ prayātāḥ saṁyatedriyāḥ

leaving their excellent chariot behind, going on foot with their attendants, their senses restrained, they set out to climb the Nila mountain,

Verse 3 (skanda.2.55.3)

nānādrumalatākīrṇaṁ nānāpakṣigaṇākulam śilāviṣamasaṁrodhamabhitaḥ pariveṣakam

thick with manifold trees and creepers, filled with flocks of various birds, hemmed in on every side by rugged rocks,

Verse 4 (skanda.2.55.4)

bhramadbhramarasaṁbhūtabhramakṛdgaṁḍaśailakam dakṣiṇāṁbhodhikallolajalāvṛtanitaṁbakam

whose rocky slopes were made dizzying by the wheeling of swarming bees, whose flank was covered by the surging waves of the southern sea,

Verse 5 (skanda.2.55.5)

apratarkyaṁ sadā martyairduṣpraveśyaṁ mahoragaiḥ mattamātaṁgakaghaṭābṛṁhitairbhīṣaṇāṁtaram

ever unthinkable for mortals, hard to enter because of great serpents, its interior made fearsome by the trumpeting of herds of maddened elephants,

Verse 6 (skanda.2.55.6)

śvāpadaiścirasaṁvāsaiḥ śastrāghātamavedibhiḥ nirbhayaiḥ paritaḥ kīrṇaṁ mṛgayūthairanekaśaḥ

thronged all around by numerous herds of beasts of prey, long-time dwellers there, unacquainted with the blow of weapons, and fearless —

Verse 7 (skanda.2.55.7)

when, though eager to enter, they could find no way within, then, through Narada's guidance, having learned the way to the mountain's summit,

Verse 8 (skanda.2.55.8)

āseduryatra vasati kṛṣṇāgurutaroradhaḥ sarvāpadbhayasaṁhartā divyasiṁhavapurvibhuḥ

they arrived where, beneath a dark aguru tree, dwells the Lord of divine lion-form, remover of the fear of every calamity,

Verse 9 (skanda.2.55.9)

yaṁ dṛṣṭvā brahmahatyāyā līyante koṭayo nṛṇām vyāttāsyaṁ bhīmadaśanamāpiṁgalasaṭākulam

seeing whom, crores of men's sins of brahmin-slaying dissolve — his mouth agape, his teeth terrible, covered in tawny mane,

Verse 10 (skanda.2.55.10)

ugraṁ trinetraṁ daityasya svorāvuttānaśāyinaḥ vakṣaḥsthalaṁ dārayaṁtaṁ nakharairvajradāruṇaiḥ

fierce, three-eyed, tearing open with claws terrible as thunderbolts the chest of the Daitya lying outstretched upon his own thigh,

Verse 11 (skanda.2.55.11)

aruṇābhaṁ lasajjihvaṁ sāṭṭahāsamukhaṁ vibhum śaṁkhacakralasadbāhuṁ kirīṭamukuṭojjvalam

red as the dawn, his tongue flashing, his face filled with loud laughter, the Lord, his arms bright with conch and discus, radiant with diadem and crown,

Verse 12 (skanda.2.55.12)

netrocchaladvahnikaṇasaṁtrāsitadigantaram pracaṁḍāghātabhūmyaṁtapraviṣṭapadapaṁkajam

the quarters of the sky made to tremble by the sparks leaping from his eyes, his lotus feet sunk deep into the earth by the force of his fierce tread —

Verse 13 (skanda.2.55.13)

tamādimṛrtiṁ te dṛṣṭvā nāradāgre tadā harim nirbhayā dadṛśurdūrātpraṇemurvigatajvarāḥ

beholding that primal form of Hari, with Narada before them, fearless, they gazed from afar and bowed; their dread departed.

Verse 14 (skanda.2.55.14)

indradyumno'pi taṁ dṛṣṭvā nāradoktau viśasvase bhāvikārye pratyayavānidamāha mahāmunim

Indradyumna too, having beheld him, put his trust in Narada's word; assured of the outcome to come, he said this to the great sage —

Verse 15 (skanda.2.55.15)

maharṣe kṛtakṛtyo'smi tvaṁ hi jñānanidhiḥ param durārādhyo nṛsiho'yaṁ darśane'pi bhayāvahaḥ

'O great sage, I am fulfilled — you alone are the supreme treasury of knowledge; this Narasimha is hard to propitiate, terrifying even to behold;

Verse 16 (skanda.2.55.16)

bhavādṛśaiḥ susevyoyaṁ mādṛśairdūrato'pi saḥ darśanātkṛtakṛtyo'smi saṁlīnāśeṣapātakaḥ

'by ones such as you he is well served, but by ones such as me, only from afar; yet by sight alone I am fulfilled — all my sins have dissolved.'

Verse 17 (skanda.2.55.17)

tvatsannidhānādevātra tiṣṭhāmo nirbhayā mune atyugra mūrtirbhagavānsvalpavīryairnaraiḥ katham

'By your presence alone, O sage, we stand here without fear; how can men of so little power approach this Lord of such fierce form,

Verse 18 (skanda.2.55.18)

ārādhyate daityarājaṁ trilokeśaṁ vidārayan yasya nīlamayī mūrtiḥ kṛpāsiṁdhoḥ sthitā tu vai

'who tore apart the king of the Daityas, lord of the three worlds? And yet that sapphire form of the ocean of compassion is also present here —

Verse 19 (skanda.2.55.19)

kasminsthale muniśreṣṭha darśanādyā vimuktidā tanme darśaya vipreṁdra yanme muktipradaṁ matam

'— at what place is it, O foremost of sages, which grants liberation by mere sight? Show it to me, O foremost of Brahmins, the one you deem will grant me liberation.'

Verse 20 (skanda.2.55.20)

ityukto nāradastasmai darśayāmāsa pāvanam sthānaṁ yatra sthito devaḥ svarṇasaikata saṁvṛtaḥ

Thus addressed, Narada showed him that holy place where the god stood, covered over with golden sand —

Verse 21 (skanda.2.55.21)

paśyaitaṁ yojanāyāmaṁ yojanadvayamucchritam kalpāṁtasthāyinaṁ bhūpa nyagrodhaṁ muktidaṁ nṛṇām

'Behold this banyan tree, a yojana in length, two yojanas in height, enduring until the end of the kalpa, O king — the bestower of liberation on men;

Verse 22 (skanda.2.55.22)

chāyāyāḥ kramaṇādyasya mucyate pāpakaṁcukāt asya mūle naraḥ prāṇāṁstyajanmuktimavāpnuyāt

'by merely walking beneath its shade the husk of sin falls away; a man who gives up his life at its root obtains liberation.'

Verse 23 (skanda.2.55.23)

nyagrodharūpaṁ dṛṣṭvāpi nārāyaṇamakalmaṣam niṣpāpo jāyate martyaḥ kimuta pūjayanstuvan

'Merely by seeing this banyan-form of the stainless Narayana a mortal becomes free of sin — how much more so through worship and praise!'

Verse 24 (skanda.2.55.24)

asya mūlātpratīcyāṁ hi nṛsiṁhasyottare nṛpa atiṣṭhanmādhavo yatra caturmūrtidharo vibhuḥ

'To the west of its root, and to the north of Narasimha, O king, is where Madhava, the Lord bearing a fourfold form, once stood.'

Verse 25 (skanda.2.55.25)

anugrahītuṁ tvāmeva punaratrodbhaviṣyati śvetadvīpe yathā viṣṇurbhogabhūmau nijālayaḥ

'To favour you alone, he shall arise here again — just as Vishnu abides in his own dwelling in the land of enjoyment, Shvetadvipa,

Verse 26 (skanda.2.55.26)

jaṁbūdvīpe karmabhūmau nijaṁ sthānamidaṁ smṛtam svasyaivātirahasyatvānna prakāśosya saṁmataḥ

'so in Jambudvipa, the land of action, this is remembered as his own place; because of its extreme secrecy, its disclosure is not sanctioned.'

Verse 27 (skanda.2.55.27)

mokṣādhikārī jānāti sthalametanmahīpate aviśvāsapadaṁ nṛṇāṁ duṣkṛtāṁ hi viśeṣataḥ

'O king, only one entitled to liberation knows this place; it does not fall within the path of trust of men, especially of evildoers.'

Verse 28 (skanda.2.55.28)

atra yā'nyā pratikṛtiḥ paurairviṣṇoḥ pratiṣṭhitā sāpi muktipradā bhūpa kiṁ punaḥ sā svayaṁbhuvā

'Even that other image of Vishnu here, established by the townsfolk, is itself liberation-granting, O king — how much more, then, the one established by the Self-existent!'

Verse 29 (skanda.2.55.29)

aṁtarddhānatirodhāne sunimitte jagatprabhoḥ anugrahārthaṁ sādhūnāṁ jāyate ca yugeyuge

'For the sake of grace toward the virtuous, the concealment and withdrawal of the Lord of the world, for some good reason, occurs age after age;

Verse 30 (skanda.2.55.30)

nānāvatārairbhagavānmatsyakūrmādikairnṛpa nimittanāśe ca tirodadhāti parameśvaraḥ

'through manifold incarnations, Fish, Tortoise and the rest, O king, when the occasion for that form ends, the Supreme Lord withdraws from view.'

Verse 31 (skanda.2.55.31)

nirnimittaṁ sthito nityamiha kāruṇyasāgaraḥ śvetadvīpādyathā viṣṇuranyatrāvataretprabhuḥ

'Yet without any external cause that ocean of compassion abides here eternally; just as from Shvetadvipa the Lord Vishnu descends elsewhere,

Verse 32 (skanda.2.55.32)

atra sthito'pi sa dvārakākāṁcīpuṣkarādiṣu prakāśaṁ yāti kṛpayā tarumūlaprarohavat

'so too, while abiding here, by his grace he becomes manifest at Dvaraka, Kanchi, Pushkara and the rest, like a shoot springing from a tree's root.'

Verse 33 (skanda.2.55.33)

nānātīrtheṣu deśeṣu kṣetreṣvāyataneṣu ca aṁśāvatārāstasyaiva mā bhūtte saṁśayo nṛpa

'In manifold sacred fords, lands, fields and shrines, the partial incarnations found there are his alone — let there be no doubt in you about this, O king.'

Verse 34 (skanda.2.55.34)

kṣaṇaṁ na tyajatīśānaḥ kṣetraṁ kṣetramiva svakam tvadupajñastu bhūpāla prakāśo'nyo bhaviṣyati

'The Lord does not forsake this field for even an instant, treating it as his own body; but, O king, a new manifestation, discovered through you, shall come to be.'

Verse 35 (skanda.2.55.35)

iti saṁdarśitaṁ sthānaṁ nāradena mahātmanā sāṣṭāṁgapātaṁ bhūmau tadiṁdradyumno nanāma ha

Thus, when the great-souled Narada had shown him that place, Indradyumna bowed to the ground in full eightfold prostration.

Verse 36 (skanda.2.55.36)

manvānastu sthitaṁ devaṁ prakāśamiva tuṣṭuve

Regarding the god as if truly present, he praised him thus —

Verse 37 (skanda.2.55.37)

iṁdradyumna uvāca devadeva jagannātha praṇatārtivināśana trāhi māṁ puṁḍarīkākṣa patitaṁ bhavasāgare

Indradyumna said: 'O God of gods, O Lord of the world, destroyer of the suffering of the surrendered, O lotus-eyed one — save me, fallen as I am in the ocean of worldly existence.'

Verse 38 (skanda.2.55.38)

tvameka eva duḥkhaughadhvaṁsakaḥ parameśvara kṣudrāḥ kṣudrānhi sevaṁte sukhaleśasya lipsayā

'You alone, O Supreme Lord, are the destroyer of the flood of sorrows; the petty serve only the petty, out of desire for a mere fragment of happiness.'

Verse 39 (skanda.2.55.39)

anāditrividhaughasya rāśeḥ svasya mahāṁhasaḥ durucchedyasya satataṁ pūryamāṇasya janmanaḥ

'This heap of my own beginningless, threefold, unremovable great mass of sin, ever swelling with each new birth —'

Verse 40 (skanda.2.55.40)

kiṁ punarbhaktibhāvena sākṣānmuktipradaṁ nṛṇām karmādhīnaṁ tu ye mūḍhā vadaṁti tvāṁ krṛpānidhim

'— what then of the state of devotion, which directly grants men liberation! Those fools who say that you, the treasury of compassion, are subject merely to karma,'

Verse 41 (skanda.2.55.41)

'— they do not know, O Lord, that karma too is set in motion by you alone. The Brahmin Ajamila, having abandoned the duties of caste and life-stage,'

Verse 42 (skanda.2.55.42)

kiṁ na pāpaṁ kṛtaṁ svāminso'pi tvannāmakīrtanāt mukto'bhūtsmaraṇādeva pāśahastairvimocitaḥ

'— what sin had he not committed, my Lord? Yet by mere utterance of your name he became free — by mere remembrance he was released from the noose of Yama's messengers.'

Verse 43 (skanda.2.55.43)

sarve'pyupāyā deveśa kīrtitāstava darśane tvayi dṛṣṭe hi bhidyaṁte saṁśayā hṛdi saṁsthitāḥ

'O Lord of gods, all the means are said to culminate in the sight of you; only when you are seen do the doubts lodged in the heart shatter.'

Verse 44 (skanda.2.55.44)

niḥsaṁśayo bhavetsadyaḥ pāpapuṇyakṣayo dhuvam tvameva śaraṇaṁ dīnamanugṛhṇīṣva māṁ vibho

'One becomes free of doubt at once, and the destruction of both sin and merit becomes certain. You alone are my refuge — show grace on me, the wretched one, O Lord.'

Verse 45 (skanda.2.55.45)

niścitāni tvayā deva garbhasthasya ca yāni me taireva me janirjātu yāce tvāṁ kevalaṁ tvidam

'O God, whatever you have already ordained for me while I lay in the womb — by that alone let my birth proceed; this alone do I ask of you.'

Verse 46 (skanda.2.55.46)

tiraśco muktidā mūrtiḥ sthitā te yā'tra tāṁ punaḥ anena cakṣuṣā paśyāmīśa nānyatprayojanam

'That liberation-granting form of yours which stands here concealed — may I behold it with these very eyes, O Lord; I have no other purpose than this.'

Verse 47 (skanda.2.55.47)

kṛtāṁjalipuṭo rājā stutvaivaṁ madhusūdanam punarnanāma dharaṇīpṛṣṭhe sāśruvilocanaḥ

The king, with folded hands, having thus praised Madhusudana, bowed again upon the ground, his eyes filled with tears.

Verse 48 (skanda.2.55.48)

tatoṁ'tarikṣagā vāṇī sāmasusvarabhāṣiṇī uccacāra nabhomadhye indradyumnasya śṛṇvataḥ

Then a voice moving through the sky, sweet-toned as the Sama chant, resounded in the midst of the heavens, as Indradyumna listened —

Verse 49 (skanda.2.55.49)

mā ciṁtāṁ vraja bhūpāla vrajiṣye tvadṛśoḥ patham paitāmahaṁ vacaḥ prāha nārado yatkuruṣva tat

'O king, have no anxiety — I shall come within the path of your sight. Do that which Narada declares as the word of the Grandsire.'

Verse 50 (skanda.2.55.50)

tacchrutvā divyavacanaṁ nāradasya ca bhāṣitam śraddadhe vājimedhāya bhagavatprītikārakaḥ

Having heard that divine utterance and Narada's words, desiring to please the Lord, he placed his faith firmly in the horse-sacrifice.

Verse 51 (skanda.2.55.51)

nāradaṁ ca punaḥ prāha harṣagadgadayā girā mune tvayā yadādiṣṭaṁ caturmukhanideśataḥ

And again, with a voice choked with joy, he said to Narada: 'O sage, what you have declared by the instruction of the four-faced Brahma,'

Verse 52 (skanda.2.55.52)

aśarīrā tviyaṁ vāṇī anujajñe tadeva hi pitāmaho jagannātho bhedo vai nā'nayoḥ kvacit

'— that very thing has this bodiless voice also sanctioned; the Grandsire and the Lord of the world are, in truth, nowhere different from one another.'

Verse 53 (skanda.2.55.53)

padmayoneḥ sutastvaṁ hi vacaste bhagavadvacaḥ tatkartavyaṁ prayatnena yacchreyaupapādakam

'You indeed are the son of the Lotus-born; your word is itself the Lord's word. Therefore that which brings about welfare must be done with the utmost effort.'
